Week 6 Game Recap: Buffalo Bills 16, New York Jets 13

Buffalo Bills

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, Pass: 10 - 25 - 116 - 1 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 7 - 20 - 0

Fitzpatrick was not overwhelmed by the task of coming off the bench against the tough Jets defense. He stood tall in the pocket, and he wasn't afraid throw the ball into small windows. Fitzpatrick wasn't all that efficient, and he didn't threaten the defense downfield, but he did get rid of the ball on time and gave his receivers a chance to make a play after the catch on a few occasions, including the third-down throw that Lee Evans took to the house to tie the game in the second half. Fitzpatrick's only interception came when Lee Evans route was disrupted and the defensive back was where Evans was supposed to be on the timing throw. While Fitzpatrick didn't do anything that would make him the definitive starter, he looked better than Trent Edwards has in the last few weeks.

QB Trent Edwards, Pass: 5 - 5 - 43 - 0 TD / 0 INT

Edwards was off to start the game, including an overthrow on a deep ball to Terrell Owens. The Jets blitzing schemes seems to make Edwards extra tentative in the pocket. Edwards has a long injury history, and the Bills haven't been doing a good job of protecting him, so it's not shocking that he left the game with an injury.

RB Marshawn Lynch, Rush: 19 - 61 - 0, Rec: 2 - 11 - 0 (3 targets)

Lynch ground it out, absorbing a lot of punishment behind a line that wasn't controlling in the line of scrimmage. He was picking and sliding along the line to find what was there, and always taking more than one man to bring him down. Lynch got a few receptions out of the backfield, but the Jets great pursuit didn't allow him to break any big gains. He did get one carry inside the 10, and one would have to assume that when this offense gets in goal-to-go situations, Lynch will get the call.

RB Fred Jackson, Rush: 15 - 52 - 0

Jackson got punt return duties today in place of Roscoe Parrish, and he got a decent amount of touches because it was a close game, but the offensive line isn't opening very many holes, and Jackson is playing second fiddle to Marshawn Lynch right now. He is getting some of the same crafty yards after contact that he was during his prodigious stretch early in the season, but Jackson doesn't look explosive enough to have significant value in a time share.

WR Terrell Owens, Rush: 1 - 9 - 0, Rec: 3 - 13 - 0 (8 targets)

Owens got a few catches on very short passes and screens, and did absolutely nothing with them. He looked his age when it came time to make an open field move or turn on the speed to separate on his only deep target (although it was overthrown by Edwards). It might not be time to drop Owens, but there's no way he should be in your lineup until further notice.

WR Lee Evans, Rec: 4 - 68 - 1 (12 targets)

Evans had his best of the game of the year even though he didn't catch any passes more than 10 yards downfield. He broke away from the defense on a third down catch to score the Bills only TD, and he seemed to be favored by Fitzpatrick after he came into the game, although that could be due to the blanket coverage on Terrell Owens by Darrelle Revis. Evans best play other than the TD was on an over-the-shoulder deep ball near the end of OT that he juggled as he went out of bounds, so it was ruled incomplete. Evans did show us that top 20 overall WR talent, but sadly this will probably end up being his ceiling for the year because of the woeful state of the Bills offense.

TE Shawn Nelson, Rec: 2 - 34 - 0 (2 targets)

Nelson showed flashes of the talent that could make him a top receiving TE down the line. He didn't do much after the catch, but he made another catch that took advantage of his terrific agility when he turned to make a catch on a ball thrown behind him.

New York Jets

QB Mark Sanchez, Pass: 10 - 29 - 119 - 0 TD / 5 INT, Rush: 1 - 6 - 0

It's hard to imagine it getting much worse for Sanchez than it was on this windy day. He made the rookie mistake of trying to do too much, throwing multiple interceptions on balls that floated in the wind, and not dialing back his game in the risky conditions. He also had an interception by underthrowing a receiver, having a ball tipped, and then in OT he just made a dumb throw to a covered target. Sanchez also arguably cost his team a FG when he had another oops ball security moment and added yardage to the attempt. He also had another ball that could have been a pick six, and Sanchez seemed to be off in some way or another for most of the game. He was still patient and seemed confident in his abilities to make plays, but it wasn't happening, and he cost his team the game on a monumental day for the running game.

RB Thomas Jones, Rush: 22 - 210 - 1, Rec: 2 - 17 - 0 (2 targets)

Jones had a career-best day, and he earned it. He had two 60+ yard runs in the first half. The holes were big, but Jones used good vision to line his path with the hole, and then that same initial burst and second gear he has shown all year to get away from the defense. He also ran with great physicality inside, getting yards after contact and putting the offense in good down and distance situations. Jones ran inspired between the tackles all day and flashed an extra gear when he was in the open. His role is secured for the entire season with this performance, and he is looking like a solid RB2/great flex even with Sanchez struggling.

RB Leon Washington, Rush: 15 - 99 - 0, Rec: 3 - 46 - 0 (8 targets)

Washington had an impact on the game early with a long run and reception, and then in overtime he had a long run that looked like it was going to put the Jets in position to win the game. The rest of the time, Washington was earning tough yards inside. He got a direct snap in the red zone that went nowhere (like most of the direct snap plays they have run with him). We're still waiting for that first breakaway TD of the year, but Washington is still displaying the vision, burst, and moves to make it happen.

RB Shonn Greene, Rush: 1 - 0 - 0

Greene got in for one carry, but he was met in the backfield.

WR Braylon Edwards, Rec: 3 - 40 - 0 (9 targets)

Edwards came back to earth with the rest of the Jets on Sunday. He was open but overthrown early, and his tip of the call put it right in the hands of a Bills defender. Sanchez tried to give Edwards a jumpball deep downfield, but it sailed on him, hung up too long, and was easily intercepted. As the game went on, Sanchez and Edwards did hook up a few times on balls that allowed Edwards to use his size advantage, but it was a disappointing day for the newest Jet.

WR David Clowney

Clowney started, but he wasn't targeted once all day.

WR Jerricho Cotchery

Cotchery missed the game with an injured hamstring.

TE Dustin Keller, Rec: 2 - 16 - 0 (10 targets)

Keller continues to struggle to carve out a big role in this passing offense. He did have a third down catch and red zone catch early, but as the game went on, Sanchez let him down with bad throws, and Keller let himself down with a drop. It looks like it's going to be rough seas for Keller's fantasy prospects while this offense incorporates Braylon Edwards and Mark Sanchez has growing pains.
