Using SOS - Two-man Quarterback By Committees

Posted 8/8 by Clayton Gray, Exclusive to Footballguys.com

While we'd all love to be able to trot out a stud quarterback every week, that's often not feasible. If you don't want to spend a high pick on a quarterback (or if you mistakenly miss out on them), you'll likely turn to a quarterback by committee (QBBC). This article will focus on finding a two-player combo for your committee.

First off, we'll eliminate the so-called stud quarterbacks. We'll identify a stud as a player that has an average draft position (ADP) in the first 72 picks (first six rounds in a 12-team draft). That number was chosen because it's hard to go for a committee if you take a QB in the first six rounds.

Peyton Manning

Tony Romo
18
Drew Brees
27
Carson Palmer
36
Ben Roethlisberger
44
Derek Anderson
52
Matt Hasselbeck
61
Donovan McNabb
63

Now, let's identify the committee-worthy QBs. We'll exclude the QBs from Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, Baltimore, and Miami. In these cases, a starter hasn't been named nor is the eventual starter someone we want to rely upon as a vital part of our QBBC. That leaves us with the following QBs:

Quarterback (and backup)
ADP
Jay Cutler
76
Marc Bulger
80
Eli Manning
81
David Garrard
90
Brett Favre
96
Jake Delhomme
98
Philip Rivers
99
Matt Schaub (Rosenfels)
107
Aaron Rodgers (Brohm)
109
Vince Young
116
Jon Kitna
125
Jason Campbell
133
Matt Leinart (Warner)
137
Jeff Garcia
158
JaMarcus Russell
172
Tarvaris Jackson
176
Trent Edwards
184
Alex Smith (Hill/O'Sullivan)
190

Note that some of the QBs above have a backup listed. In these cases, the backup is either someone you'll need to draft (Warner and maybe Rosenfels), someone that would be a hot commodity if the starter were to be injured (definitely Rosenfels and maybe Brohm), or in a training camp battle (Hill and O'Sullivan).

Finally, we'll use SOS to determine which duo forms the most desirable QBBC. Below you will see all 137 possible combos ranked by the expected fantasy points (FtsyPts). You will also see a column labeled "ADP". The two numbers there are the ADP for the two QBs in the combo. The trick is to find a high-scoring combo that will be a relative bargain. As an added bonus, we've included the expected FtsyPts for the stud QBs as well. This will easily allow you to see how your combo will measure up with those elite signal-callers.
