Week 9 Early Injury Report

by Mark Wimer, Exclusive to Footballguys.com

Quarterback

QB Brian Griese - TB - Griese was inactive on Sunday due to his injured right elbow after being listed as questionable to play on Friday.

QB Matt Hasselbeck - SEA - Hasselbeck is undergoing a new round of tests on his ailing back/knee to see if he is fit to play in week 9. "Until they tell me he's going to shut it down, it's going to be a week-to-week thing," coach Mike Holmgren said on his radio show on KIRO (710 AM) Monday.

QB Carson Palmer - CIN - Palmer didn't play on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (right elbow injury). Palmer denied ESPN reports that he wouldn't play again this season: "That's not true. I don't know where he (ESPN's Chris Mortensen) got it," Palmer said. "I just found it out last night (Saturday)..."It most likely looks like they are going to look at it after the bye, evaluate it and see where we are from there," he said. "I'm just in the process of rehabbing. And doing everything the training staff tells me to do to get me healthy. I'll be able to play when this thing gets healed up."

QB Tony Romo - DAL - Romo was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (right pinky finger injury).

Running Back

RB Joseph Addai - IND - Addai will miss his second straight start when the Indianapolis Colts meet the Tennessee Titans Monday night in Nashville. He has been ruled out of the critical AFC South showdown with a hamstring injury.

RB Ladell Betts - WAS - Betts was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (knee injury).

RB Reggie Bush - NO - Bush missed the game on Sunday as expected (he was listed as out on Friday due to his recent knee surgery).

RB Jamaal Charles - KC - Charles suffered a high-ankle sprain of unspecified severity on Sunday - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along. Unfortunately for Charles, high-ankle sprains usually are more severe and harder to rehab than low-ankle sprains.

RB Jesse Chatman - NYJ - Chatman suffered a potentially serious knee injury on Sunday. He left the stadium on crutches and could be out for a while - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Casey Cramer - MIA - Cramer missed the game on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (ankle injury).

RB Jerome Felton - DET - Felton injured his ankle during the loss to Washington - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Ahman Green - HOU - Green left action again Sunday with what he called "a cramp in my leg, my left leg. Other than that," he said, "I'm good. I just have to get treatment and get ready for Minnesota." Green will be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Justin Griffith - OAK - Griffith limped off the field after scoring a TD with a knee injury that sidelined him for the balance of the game. "All I know is I saw the white line but I didn't know if the ball got across," said Griffith - he'll have his knee examined Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

RB Steven Jackson - STL - Jackson was unable to play on Sunday after being listed as questionable on Friday (thigh injury). "He did a lot in pregame; he just couldn't go," coach Jim Haslett said. "Every time he planted and tried to cut on it, it grabbed. So we thought what's best for him, and what's best for this team, was not to let him go."

RB Felix Jones - DAL - Jones was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (hamstring injury).

RB LaMont Jordan - NE - Jordan was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as doubtful to play on Friday (calf injury).

RB Reagan Mauia - CIN - Mauia didn't play on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (hamstring injury).

RB Darren McFadden - OAK - McFadden was unable to play on Sunday due to his injured toe, after being listed as questionable on Friday. "It's just something that time's got to heal," McFadden said after the game.

RB Sammy Morris - NE - Morris was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as doubtful to play on Friday (knee injury).

RB Willie Parker - PIT - Parker sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as doubtful on Friday (knee injury).

RB Clinton Portis - WAS - Portis suffered an ankle sprain during the game on Sunday, but the injury is considered minor as of Monday morning.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson - SD - Tomlinson says his big toe is now fine and felt he performed well in London: "I'm pretty much back healthy," Tomlinson said. "And I felt like I was running good tonight." We'll see how the toe responds to the workload as this week goes along, but so far, so good for Tomlinson.

Wide Receiver

WR Jason Avant - PHI - Avant went down to back spasms in the first half on Sunday. He did not return to action.

WR Arnaz Battle - SF - Battle hurt his right foot in the 4th quarter on Sunday - he didn't return to action. Battle will be evaluated further as the bye week goes along.

WR Plaxico Burress - NYG - Burress was benched for the first 18-1/2 minutes of his first game against his old team Sunday because he missed a mandatory treatment for his injured neck on Saturday morning. Burress said after the game his neck was actually feeling good after Friday's practice, and he had no idea he needed to report for treatment on Saturday, too. Hopefully the injury won't linger after this latest contest.

WR Andre Caldwell - CIN - Caldwell didn't play on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (foot injury).

WR Laveranues Coles - NYJ - Coles played through a minor concussion suffered last week vs. the Raiders: it was his third documented head injury in 22 months, though. The more head trauma a player suffers, the more likely he is to suffer additional injuries in future games. "I made it through the game," Coles said when asked how he felt after the game. "I'm fine. Nobody had to come get me and drag me to the sidelines. I feel all right...I'm not a doctor," Coles added. "I just take all the tests and they come back to me and say, 'You're fine and you can play' or, 'You can't play.'"

WR Kevin Curtis - PHI - Curtis played on Sunday, and didn't think he'd aggravated his sports hernia through the game. However, he commented: "This was a different kind of work than I've got for a long time," Curtis said. "I already feel pretty sore, but we've got seven days until our next game, so I'll be fine by then." He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along to monitor how his groin responds to the hard work on Sunday.

WR Andre Davis - HOU - Davis sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as out on Friday (finger injury).

WR Craig Davis - SD - Davis sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as out on Friday (groin injury).

WR Yamon Figurs - BAL - Figurs sat out of another game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as doubtful on Friday (knee injury).

WR Glenn Holt - CIN - Holt suffered a shoulder injury of unspecified severity on Sunday - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

WR Malcolm Kelly - WAS - Kelly was sidelined on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (knee injury).

WR Santana Moss - WAS - Moss tweaked a hamstring during the game vs. Detroit, but reportedly was walking normally after the game and the injury isn't considered serious as of Monday morning. He does have a history of hamstring complaints, though, so keep an eye on Moss' practice status as the week goes along.

WR Josh Reed - BUF - Reed strained his Achilles tendon during the Bills' 25-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The injury occurred late in the second quarter and he did not return to the field after halftime. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along, but the team fears he may be out for some time. Initial indications are not very promising.

WR Laurent Robinson - ATL - Robinson was unable to play on Sunday due to his injured knee, despite being listed as probable on Friday.

Tight End

TE Chris Baker - NYJ - Baker aggravated a week-old hip injury and wasn't able to play even though he was dressed and active. Baker said "something came up" Thursday in practice, but he still expected to play - during the pregame warmups, it became "too painful." He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

TE Derek Fine - BUF - Fine made his season debut after missing the first 6 games due to a thumb injury. He only played for a couple of snaps on Sunday. "It's definitely something I've been looking forward to for a long time," Fine said after the game. "It was real tough because I had never sat out before. It's frustrating watching our tight ends play, and there's only two of them, and there's nothing I can do to help. You just try to learn from them and wait my turn."

TE Casey Fitzsimmons - DET - Fitzsimmons injured his shoulder during the game on Sunday - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

TE Bubba Franks - NYJ - Franks sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as doubtful on Friday (hip injury).

TE Antonio Gates - SD - "I feel great," said Gates after the London/New Orleans game. He has been bothered by hip and toe injuries earlier this season. "I knew coming into this game I was good. Everything has changed. There's a sense of confidence."

TE L.J. Smith - PHI - Smith was knocked out of Sunday's game with Atlanta with a concussion after a late hit from Atlanta's Lawyer Milloy. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

TE Ben Utecht - CIN - Utecht was unable to play on Sunday due to his injured chest, after being listed as doubtful on Friday.

TE Delanie Walker - SF - Walker left the game an injured elbow in the 2nd quarter on Sunday, and didn't return to action - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

TE Kellen Winslow - CLE - "I spoke to Kellen [Saturday] night," GM Phil Savage said. "I made a couple points to him in regards to he and the team and he and I's relationship. I understand some of the points he made and we had a good conversation." Winslow is expected to be back at 100% healthy, and back with the team, on Monday.

TE Jason Witten - DAL - Witten was out of Sunday's game against Tampa Bay because of bruised ribs, playing only a few more plays after returning to the field. X-rays on the injury were negative for broken ribs, but he is reportedly very bruised and sore. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along. "I tried to doctor it up a little bit at halftime and come back, but I just didn't have it in me," said Witten, who played in the first series of the second half.

Kicker

PK Mike Nugent - NYJ - Nugent sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as out on Friday (right thigh injury).

OL Atlanta Falcons - ATL - OT Sam Baker (hip injury) missed another contest on Sunday due to his ongoing struggles with his sore hip - he was listed as questionable to play on Friday's injury report. Baker practiced on Friday and head coach Mike Smith thought he'd be available for the Eagles game. "It was one of those things where I tried to go and the doctors just said not to risk it," Baker said.

OL Atlanta Falcons - ATL - OT Todd Weiner suffered a knee injury during the game on Sunday and didn't return to action. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

OL Jacksonville Jaguars - JAX - Set to start in his first game since last season, G Chris Naeole suffered a broken hand in pregame warmups, which kept him out of action against the Browns. "I haven't spoken to him about it yet other than to say I know how hard he worked to get back and he's disappointed," coach Del Rio said after the loss.

OL Detroit Lions - DET - G Damion Cook injured his knee during the game on Sunday - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

Samuels's absence from the lineup Sunday vs. Detroit broke his streak of 73 consecutive starts. He said he went through 10 minutes of warmups Sunday but could go no further. Stephon Heyer separated his left shoulder in the first game of the season and did not make another start until Sunday, filling in for Samuels. "I was a little worried about [my left shoulder], but the docs helped me out," Heyer said. "They gave me a little something before [Sunday's] game, and it ended up being not a problem for me. I really wasn't paying attention to it at all, really." Tackle Jon Jansen was slow to get up from the ground a few times but said after the contest, "I just got bruised up a little bit, but I'm all right."

OL New Orleans Saints - NO - C Jonathan Goodwin missed the game on Sunday as expected (he was listed as doubtful on Friday due to his knee injury).

OL Pittsburgh Steelers - PIT - OT Marvel Smith sat out of the game on Sunday as expected, after being listed as out on Friday (back injury).

OL Pittsburgh Steelers - PIT - The Steelers will sign a long snapper as early as today to replace Greg Warren, who is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. He'll be difficult to replace as long snappers are fairly hard to find - the lack of chemistry with Warren out was evident when the Steeler's punter missed a long snap over his head causing a safety for the Giants on Sunday.

Defensive Tackle

DT Adam Carriker - STL - Carriker was unable to play on Sunday after being listed as questionable on Friday (ankle injury).

DT Jonathan Fanene - CIN - Fanene suffered a hamstring injury of unspecified severity on Sunday. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

Little hopes the re-injury was minor, suggesting that old scar tissue tore loose - "Hopefully, that's what it was," Little said. "I think that's what it was because it feels all right now. I'm just kind of down because I let my teammates down and I want to be out there playing with them."

DE Ray McDonald - SF - McDonald missed the game on Sunday as expected (he was listed as out on Friday due to his knee injury).

DE Aaron Schobel - BUF - As expected, Schobel didn't play on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (foot injury).

DE Jason Taylor - WAS - Taylor underwent emergency surgery after his most recent injury and is scheduled to have his calf drained again Monday because it has healed slowly. In fact, Taylor came back before his calf healed, and there is no time frame for a complete recovery, a team medical official said recently. Taylor plans to continue playing through the pain but the fact is that he is not 100% due to the ongoing problems with his calf muscle. "It felt like it has the last few weeks; it's not right," Taylor said. "I'm nowhere near myself, but I'm trying to give what I have and help this team, and as long as we keep winning that's all that matters."
