Week 12 Early Injury Report

by Mark Wimer, Exclusive to Footballguys.com

Quarterback

QB Jeff Garcia - TB - Garcia needed 10 stitches in his chin after the game due to a hit taken literally on the chin during the game. "I don't remember it," Garcia said. "It definitely didn't feel good. It caused me to stay on the ground a little bit to gather myself. I was fortunate it didn't cause a concussion or anything. I was able to stand up, get everything together and get ready for the next play."

QB Brian Griese - TB - Griese missed the game on Sunday as expected after being listed as doubtful with his elbow injury.

QB Matt Hasselbeck - SEA - Hasselbeck did return to the field on Sunday as expected (he was listed as probable to play on Friday after rehabbing his sore back). However, Hasselbeck was pretty beaten up after the game, with multiple bruises and he was late to post-game interviews due to taking IV fluids in order to rehydrate. "It's football, it's a violent game," Hasselbeck said. "It's a physical game. And I guess that's the only thing that makes me feel good, knowing that there will be some fines coming out in a couple days. But, you know, it's football."

QB Dan Orlovsky - DET - Orlovsky was inactive on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (right hand/thumb injury).

QB Kyle Orton - CHI - OC Ron Turner indicated after the game that Orton wasn't 100% on his sprained right ankle, but he didn't think that impacted the offense very much, saying players didn't execute the game plan. For his part, Orton said "You could go around to every position group on the entire team, and we stunk it up," Orton said. "I stunk it up. When you get beat by 30 points, you don't have to look too far. I just look at myself and say I've got to get better."

QB Carson Palmer - CIN - Palmer was inactive on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (right elbow injury).

QB Chad Pennington - MIA - Pennington played on Sunday despite an inflamed foot tendon aggravated by practice earlier in the week. "We just rehabbed it and took some anti-inflammatories," Pennington said. "By [Sunday] morning, it felt good." Pennington said he was not limited by the injury during Sunday's game, although he reported he almost fell on the floor when getting out of bed on Saturday due to the sore foot.

QB JaMarcus Russell - OAK - Russell appeared to tweak his sore leg during the game vs. Miami, and was briefly out of the lineup while Marques Tuiasosopo took a few snaps. After the game, the injury was reported as a mild ankle sprain - as of Monday morning, it doesn't appear that the situation is serious.

QB Matt Schaub - HOU - Schaub was inactive on Sunday as expected after being listed as out to play on Friday (knee injury).

QB Seneca Wallace - SEA - Wallace was active but did not play on Sunday due to the return of Matt Hasselbeck to the lineup - he was listed as probable to be active on Friday despite his groin injury.

Running Back

RB Ladell Betts - WAS - Betts had missed three games due to his knee sprain, but returned Sunday night. However, he aggravated his injury just before the end of the 3rd quarter. "I really don't know what happened, I don't know if it got twisted or hit funny or what, but it just aggravated," said Betts, who said his knee was "not even close" to being 100 percent even before it was re-injured. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along, but initial indications aren't too good given how long Betts was already out due to this injury.

RB Reggie Bush - NO - Bush missed the game on Sunday as expected due to his injured knee (listed as out on Friday).

RB Jerome Felton - DET - Felton missed the game on Sunday due to his injured ankle, after being listed as probable to play on Friday.

RB Earnest Graham - TB - Graham suffered an ankle injury vs. Minnesota that may end his season, according to coach Gruden: "It doesn't look like (Graham) will play anytime soon," Gruden said on Monday morning.

RB Ryan Grant - GB - Grant missed a little time when he had the wind knocked out of him, but returned back to action.

RB Peyton Hillis - DEN - Hillis injured his right shoulder early in Denver's 24-20 victory when he collided with Atlanta linebacker Curtis Lofton, but Hillis continued to play, eventually posting 10/44/2 rushing on the day. "When I hit No. 50, that hurt a little bit," Hillis said. "But that's what football's all about." His shoulder was heavily iced after the game, and Hillis will be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Steven Jackson - STL - Jackson was inactive on Sunday after being listed as out on Friday (thigh injury).

RB Brandon Jacobs - NYG - Jacobs tweaked a knee during the game on Sunday - it was "sore" after the game and will be evaluated further on Monday. Jacobs said he could've gone back into the game if it had been necessary - we'll see if he can practice as the week goes along. Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has some swelling in his knee and will have an MRI later today, but Tom Coughlin sounded "hopeful" that Jacobs would be able to play in Arizona on Sunday afternoon.

"There's a little swelling," coach Tom Coughlin said on a conference call Monday. "He's walking really well. They're going to do all the tests. Hopefully we'll get this under control."

Jacobs said he could've returned to the game if necessary. Coughlin said that was true.

"Yeah, I think that was the way it was," Coughlin said. "He came out and was ready to go. You know, we wanted to make sure exactly what this is. So we were cautious."

"We've been down this road before," Coughlin said. "Hopefully this won't keep Brandon out at all, but we have some people that are prepared."

RB Felix Jones - DAL - Jones was inactive on Sunday as expected after being listed as out on Friday (ongoing hamstring woes).

RB Mike Karney - NO - Karney missed the game on Sunday as expected due to his injured knee (listed as out on Friday).

RB Willis McGahee - BAL - McGahee limped off the field with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, and did not return to action. Afterward, a Ravens spokesman said McGahee had "tweaked" his right ankle (the same one that kept him out two weeks ago in Cleveland), but added that McGahee was not kept out of the game for that reason. "He was ready to go," said Ray Rice, who split time with Le'Ron McClain for the rest of the game. "We just got into the two-minute mode after that. You know how it is with us, ready for any situation." McGahee's status for the next game is uncertain as of Monday.

RB Ryan Moats - HOU - Moats left with a sprained ankle suffered vs. Indianapolis and did not return any kicks after that point - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Jerious Norwood - ATL - Norwood suffered a rib injury on Sunday, but returned to finish the game. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Willie Parker - PIT - Parker rushed for more than 100 yards vs. the Chargers, and his ailing shoulder was helped out by the harness he is wearing: "It felt really well, just getting out there and feeling normal, more like myself instead of struggling," he said after the game.

RB P.J. Pope - DEN - Pope suffered a rib injury of unspecified severity on Sunday - he had X-rays after the game and will be evaluated further as the week goes along.

RB Clinton Portis - WAS - Despite reports throughout the week that Portis' sprained MCL would keep him off the field on Sunday night, he was active and played in both halves vs. the Cowboys after being listed as "questionable" to play on Friday. Portis decided in pre-game warmups that he could go vs. Dallas, and started the game strongly. However, the sore knee hampered him increasingly as the game went on. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along. There are some that are speculating he might have aggravated his knee again. Stay tuned to see how this plays out this week.

RB Michael Robinson - SF - Robinson suffered a stinger during the game on Sunday, spent some time on the sidelines, then returned to action and aggravated the stinger. He is expected to be OK for the next game as of Monday.

WR Antonio Chatman - CIN - Chatman suffered a game-ending injury with 3:11 left in the first half - he was taken off the field on a stretcher. Bengals officials said he had a cervical (neck) injury. He had movement in all his extremities and his preliminary X-rays were normal. He will undergo further examinations - Chatman was admitted overnight to University Hospital for observation and more X-rays and tests. Initial indications are he might not be available for the next game, but time will tell.

"A situation like that where I have the opportunity to draw the game to three points, I have to make it, somehow, some way. If you want to be great in this game, you have to make those catches all the time. There's no excuse for not making it that one time."
