Quarterback
*** Saturday Update ***
QB Carson Palmer (CIN) is unlikely to play again this season according to sources. Palmer's injury is to one portion of the ulnar collateral ligament and he has been told that Tommy John surgery would repair the problem with positive results, the sources said. However, doctors have agreed that Palmer's conservative approach to such an operation is acceptable because the damage is more limited. Palmer has asked the Bengals to wait "around two months" before taking any action because, a source said, the quarterback "does not want to abandon the team until he's certain he can't play. Palmer believes the pain in his arm is actually manageable but he has lost strength in his right hand, which has become a greater obstacle to throwing the football, the sources said.

QB J.T. OSullivan (SF) received a vote of confidence from OC Mike Martz. "J.T. is going to be an outstanding player in this league," Martz said. "He's on his way. I'm not displeased with him in any sense, and I think he's going to be fine. But he's not where he needs to be, but we're going to get him there as quickly as we can." Although he has the full support of Martz, O'Sullivan is fully aware that he needs to do a better job of preventing turnovers. "It's a point of emphasis, I know," O'Sullivan said. "Obviously, we need to take care of the ball better, and leave it at that. So it needs to happen, one way or another, it just needs to happen."

"To be honest, I don't even know what the game plan is right now," Taylor said. "I'm going to the hospital now to find out what we're going to do, and the only thing I'm focused on right now is hopefully playing in the game on Sunday and trying to help this team beat the Lions. The rest of that stuff doesn't really matter right now."

TM St. Louis Rams (STL) The NFL has voided Jim Haslett's contract because of language that would guarantee him the full-time HC position if he were to win six games this season. The league says it was not in accordance with the Rooney Rule regarding interviewing minorities. Of course that begged the question: Why are the Colts and Seahawks able to designate Jim Caldwell and Jim Mora as successors? The league says those decisions were made in the offseason and are different from the inseason move regarding Haslett.

*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Joe Flacco (BAL) DE/LB Terrell Suggs said recently that Troy Smith should be the Ravens' starting QB over Joe Flacco. "Right now, I think [Flacco is] all right," Suggs said. "But like I said, in the end, Troy should be the starter [because he's] the better man for the job." "He (Flacco) started out hot," Suggs went on to say. "We played two teams who were in the bottom of the league in defense [Cleveland and Cincinnati]. So, everybody was going all crazy about him." Asked about his comments today, Suggs emphasized that Flacco and Smith have different strengths that the Ravens should utilize in their offense. "I think it would better if we had both of them playing," Suggs said. "Then again, I ain't no damn offensive coordinator."
*** Saturday Update ***
QB Carson Palmer (CIN) is unlikely to play again this season according to sources. Palmer's injury is to one portion of the ulnar collateral ligament and he has been told that Tommy John surgery would repair the problem with positive results, the sources said. *** Thursday Update ***
QB Tony Romo (DAL) did not practice on Thursday.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Tony Romo (DAL) did not practice on Wednesday. Romo says will miss his second straight game because of his fractured right pinkie, and he did not sound confident he would be able to return before the Cowboys' Week 10 bye week. Romo made the announcement Tuesday during Terrell Owens' Inside the Huddle radio show. "Brad is going to go this week unless something happens that I don't foresee," Romo said. "It will be very difficult to change. Right now, we've got to get two wins going into the bye and go from there."
QB Tony Romo (DAL) who was seen wearing a heavier cast in the locker room on Monday, tried to play in Week 7 but suffered a setback during warm-ups. "He threw it all right when we went out early, and we thought it would be fine; then he had a little more problem there," HC Wade Phillips said. "It was a concern, and then we got in a situation where it really wasn't prudent to put him in anyway."
Owner Jerry Jones said he didn't know if Tony Romo would play Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He said it will be determined by Romo. The initial prognosis was for Romo to sit until the bye following the November 1st showdown against the New York Giants. Jones realizes more is at stake now. "The ideal world would be to get through to the bye," Jones said. "We don't need to talk this week about him having to play. But we need to get a [win] out of the next two games to be where we need to be when we get to the bye."
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Darrell Hackney (DEN) will be called up from the team's practice squad to their active roster. Hackney will become the No. 2 quarterback to Jay Cutler, although he won't be formally promoted from the practice squad until Monday. "I was just told I'm going to have a bigger role, to No. 2 quarterback," Hackney said.

QB Damon Huard (KC) injured his thumb in the fourth quarter of the team's Week 7 game. Huard will see a hand specialist after leaving Sunday's game. The hand was still swollen and wrapped Monday, and Huard said he would see a hand specialist to determine the extent of the injury.
*** Thursday Update ***
QB Tom Brady (NE) had further procedures conducted on his left knee after developing an infection around the wound. Brady said that his California doctors went in to clean and test the wound because of the infection. The Patriots were reportedly angry with the events taken place because they wanted Brady's surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston (note that Patriots officials later refuted this claim). Brady chose a doctor preferred by his family and he is well behind pace to return to New England. If the infection is not brought under control, the patellar tendon graft used to replace Brady's anterior cruciate ligament could become compromised. If that happens, he will have to undergo another surgery on the ACL.

*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) missed practice again on Wednesday. HC Mike Holmgren reportedly did not seem overly optimistic about Hasselbeck's availability for the team's Week 8 game. Holmgren indicated that he would need to see Hasselbeck practice Thursday or Friday before making the decision, but that Seneca Wallace would start again if Hasselbeck were unable to go.
QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) HC Mike Holmgren said there is a possibility that Matt Hasselbeck would play Week 8's game against the 49ers. "That's going to be on a week-to-week, almost day-to-day, basis on what his progress is with his rehab," Holmgren said. "We said last week there was a possibility he'd play against San Francisco and I will say that there's a possibility he will play this week."

Although he has the full support of Martz, O'Sullivan is fully aware that he needs to do a better job of preventing turnovers. "It's a point of emphasis, I know," O'Sullivan said. "Obviously, we need to take care of the ball better, and leave it at that. So it needs to happen, one way or another, it just needs to happen."
QB Jeff Garcia (TB) is officially Tampa Bay's starting quarterback again. Garcia completed 26 of 37 passes for 310 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Bryant on Tampa Bay's opening drive, and the Buccaneers beat the struggling Seattle Seahawks 20-10 on Sunday night. Bucs coach Jon Gruden said Garcia will continue to start. "He was hot tonight," Gruden said. Both numbers would be his lowest totals since 2001, when he missed 10 games with a knee injury. "I don't know what's going on," he said. "I'm just here, just going to ride it out and get to the playoffs and, hey, that may be it right there." He is due to make $5 million in salary next season, and the club has a promising young player in rookie Tim Hightower. James says he wants to play meaningful snaps and not just be on a roster. "I don't want to just be on a team; I like to play," he said. "If I'm not playing, it's not serving a purpose."

*** Friday Update ***
RB Joseph Addai (IND) did not practice on Friday and is questionable to play in Week 8. "You've got to be smart," Addai said. "I've talked to a lot of older guys on the team. Regardless, you want to go out and play, so that's the biggest thing, but at the same time, you don't want to go out there and set yourself back. I think that's where I am right now. I want to go out there, but I don't want to be stupid. That's the biggest thing, really being smart about what's going on and trusting the trainers and the staff about how I should go about it. You want to play in all games, no matter what. You want to be out there, but at the same time, if you go out there and get hurt again, you're hurting your team. It's not about yourself. It's about the team. You have to make the right decision."

RB Larry Johnson (KC) is likely to miss the team's Week 8 game. The league is investigating an incident involving Johnson assaulting a woman in a nightclub. Regardless of the league's findings, HC Herman Edwards has hinted that Johnson might miss Week 8. "Decisions of all that will take place when it has to be made," Edwards said. "I don't have to make a decision on who's starting, not starting. That's kind of where that's at. Whatever I do, hopefully I think you know me by now, people know me by now, I'm going to do the right thing for the football team. That's where it stands with me."

"He makes plays, but as far as being a presence in the huddle, the receiving corps looks up to him and the team as a whole responds to him. "He is a tough guy, he is a competitor and he wants to win. If you have a guy who plays with a lot of emotion and a lot of heart, whether he makes one catch or 10 catches, he will rub off on someone else. According to HC Tom Coughlin, no serious damage was revealed. "There's nothing [wrong with the] bone, no vertebra or anything like that," Coughlin said after practice. "He's very sore, a little stiff today, so the reason all the tests were made is he continued to have the stiff neck and issues along those lines. We thought it was down in the [trapezius muscle], where it started from so we wanted to rule everything out. All I got was there was nothing of the nature of any kind of vertebra or anything like that. It's all muscle." When asked if Burress is a question mark for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Coughlin said, "We'll see. We'll have to see how he does tomorrow."

TE Kellen Winslow (CLE) Winslow's appeal of his suspension won't be heard until Tuesday, which means he definitely will not be available Sunday in Jacksonville. If Winslow should win his appeal, he would recoup some or all of his game check of $235,294. GM Phil Savage spoke for the first time regarding the suspension of TE Kellen Winslow. On WTAM radio, Savage said the following: "After all of us had been through since 2005, the comments really called into question the integrity of our medical staff and the organization as a whole," Savage said. "To compromise that trust after the Browns had stood by Kellen through the motorcycle episode and knowing without question we had done everything in our power to combat this staph infection problem, it just showed a lack of professional restraint. The Browns are bigger than one person, bigger than Randy Lerner, bigger than Romeo Crennel, bigger than me and bigger than any player on this team. We couldn't and won't allow one person to tear down the organization, so we had to do something." Savage said that he would "gladly" welcome back Winslow after the suspension "if he's willing to do the things he said publicly he's willing to do."

TE Kellen Winslow (CLE) said on Sunday that he was upset with the team's handling of his recent hospitalization and subsequent media coverage associated with what he revealed was a staph infection. "I heard from Romeo Crennel and I heard from my position coach [Alfredo Roberts] when I was in the Clinic. I heard from my teammates," Winslow said. "But I never heard from the main man - Phil Savage - and that really disappoints me. Sometimes I don't even feel a part of this team." On Tuesday, the team suspended Winslow for Week 8 because of his public comments.

DE Terrell Suggs (BAL) has been told by the NFL that any further comments or on-field actions indicating his participation in bounty activity could result in "significant disciplinary action," a league spokesman told The Baltimore Sun. The Ravens linebacker was notified today in a letter from Ray Anderson, the NFL executive vice president of football operations. In an interview with an Atlanta sports radio talk show two weeks ago, Suggs said there was a "bounty" on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and running back Rashard Mendenhall. Suggs once again tried to clarify his remarks through a statement issued by the Ravens. "I did repeat the word 'bounty' early in the interview after the guy asking me the question used the word. That was a mistake," Suggs said in a statement. "I misspoke, and I'm sorry for that. I hope that clears this up."

CB Chris McAlister (BAL) HC John Harbaugh and Chris McAlister had differing accounts of why the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback was sitting on the bench for the majority of a 27-13 win over the Miami Dolphins. Addressing rampant rumors that McAlister had been benched for disciplinary reasons stemming from a violation of team rules, Harbaugh denied that was the case. Harbaugh said the issue was confined to McAlister's problematic right knee, which has plagued him all season. McAlister was not listed on the injury report, and appeared in only a handful of plays. Asked to specify the reason behind him not starting, McAlister had a terse answer: "Go ask the coach." On Monday, Harbaugh elaborated. "It's a football decision," Harbaugh said. "We're always going to put the best 11 players on the field for that situation. That's what we did [Sunday]. We had the corners out there in those situations that we wanted to have out there." Harbaugh would not say if McAlister would return to the starting lineup or not this week against the Raiders.

TM New Orleans Saints (NO) There has been a "rash of positive tests under the steroid policy as a result of players taking water pills to lose weight," a highly-placed NFL source said. The source told FOX 31's Josina Anderson Friday morning that New Orleans Saints' RB Deuce McAllister and DE Will Smith were included in the web of positive tests. "There are about six to ten overall positive tests. Three to four of them are from the Saints organization alone including McAllister and Smith" per the source. The source also told Anderson there were no Denver Broncos players that were a part of this group. McAllister and Smith are expected to play in Week 8 despite their names being among a group of players to test positive for a substance banned by the NFL. The league and the Saints haven't commented on the reports, but it appears certain McAllister and Smith will play in Sunday's game against the Chargers at Wembley Stadium. Even if McAllister and Smith face possible suspensions, it wouldn't happen before Sunday's game.
