*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Matt Ryan (ATL) was named The Associated Press 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. "I'm certainly flattered," Ryan said. "There [are] a number of guys who had great rookie seasons this year, so to even be mentioned in that light is nice. It's certainly a great honor, and I think it speaks to what we did as a team this year."
QB Kyle Orton (CHI) During his season-ending new conference, GM Jerry Angelo said that the team's top priority this offseason is bringing in a QB to compete with 2008 starter Kyle Orton. "I think we have to have competition at that position," Angelo said. "We have to get that position right. I know there's going to be a lot of talk about a No. 1 receiver. Guys, it starts with the quarterback. It's all about the quarterback. You don't win because of wide receivers. You don't win because of running backs. You win because of the quarterback. We've got to get the quarterback position stabilized."
QB Brady Quinn (CLE) continues to recover from surgery on his right index finger, December 3rd. Pins were inserted to repair the damaged extensor tendon and move a bone chip back into place. Quinn says he expects to have the pins removed in mid-January, and then begin throwing as soon as possible. "I'll be 100 percent maybe a week after the pins come out," he said.
*** Friday Update ***
QB Peyton Manning (IND) has been selected as the 2008 NFL MVP.
QB Tyler Thigpen (KC) refused to be modest when asked whether he thought he should be the starting QB in 2009. "Look at the way I've played," said Thigpen. "Look at the way the offense has moved. Look at the way, you know, guys are so much more energetic when they're out there with me. It's like those guys got a second wind in the second half of the season, when I became the starter." Thigpen said he'd be disappointed if the Chiefs draft a quarterback with plans to make him the starter. "I don't think they should," Thigpen said. "Moving forward now, I feel like I am the future for the Chiefs. I feel like I've earned it."
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Chad Pennington (MIA) won The Associated Press 2008 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award Wednesday, the second time in three years Pennington has received the honor. He also earned it in 2006 while with the New York Jets. Pennington is the first player in the 11 seasons of the award to win it twice.
QB Brett Favre (NYJ) has been told by doctors that pain in his right shoulder is from a torn biceps tendon and some calcification in the area. They also said Favre would need nothing more than arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury. ESPN's Ed Werder's source also said the 39-year-old Favre might be able to avoid an arthroscopic procedure altogether if he decides to play a 19th NFL season. Favre will reportedly need "several weeks" before deciding whether to play again in 2009.
*** Thursday Update ***
QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) watched practice from the sidelines Thursday. Reportedly, the team won't practice Friday. Roethlisberger is expected to continue to rest and will likely be ready to practice next week.
QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) did not stay overnight in a hospital and is deemed "OK" after suffering a concussion Week 17, but he may not practice this week with the team on a bye-week for the wild-card round. Roethlisberger watched practice on Tuesday. HC Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger will continue to undergo a "battery" of tests to determine how he is recovering from what sources say was a mild concussion in Week 17. Tomlin said the QB is "doing better" but added that he is not ready to say whether Roethlisberger will practice this week.
QB Jeff Garcia (TB) will "have an opportunity'' to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season, according to HC Jon Gruden. Gruden said the Bucs also will look at other available quarterbacks. "I've got a lot of respect for Jeff, and, again, we'll address all these things later," Gruden said. "Jeff will have an opportunity to come back, I'm sure. He'll be a free agent, and we'll see who's available. We want to get better at every position we can."
Running Back
RB Edgerrin James (ARI) HC Ken Whisenhunt said Edgerrin James looked "fast" and "fresh" Week 17 against Seattle with 100 yards on 14 carries. Arizona Republic columnist Paola Boivin believes it was also enough to land James back in the starting role Week 18 against the Falcons and Whisenhunt has hinted that could be the case. "It's like we said a long time ago," Whisenhunt said. "If we have Edgerrin, we can count on him later in the year." He also said it's nice to have a player "looking like he's in good shape for the playoffs."

RB Chad Simpson (IND) was excused from Thursday's practice.
RB Larry Johnson (KC) HC Herm Edwards responded to Larry Johnson's public request for a trade by saying Johnson is under contract for the 2009 season and it appears for now there are no plans to trade him. "Larry's under contract. Until somebody makes that decision, he's a Chief," Edwards said. "He's (frustrated). He's a talented player. He doesn't like the way things ended. Nobody does. He has a right to his opinion, but he's under contract. That's what he has to understand. The offense has changed. He had to play in an offense that wasn't conducive to him carrying the ball 30 times. That's always hard for a guy used to carrying it a lot."
*** Wednesday Update ***
RB Adrian Peterson (MIN) said Wednesday that he has been battling an ankle injury for the past three weeks and that he re-injured it Week 17 against the Giants. "It feels pretty good," Peterson said Wednesday. He then added, "I've been fighting with this ankle injury the past three weeks. Going out on Sundays I take a lot of shots in the legs, so it got twisted up on that play and it was pretty painful [against the Giants]."
RB LaMont Jordan (NE) doesn't know if he'll re-sign with the team in the offseason. "I could definitely see myself wearing this uniform again, but at the same time, this is a business," he said.
RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) HC Tom Coughlin hopes to have Brandon Jacobs for the Divisional Round January 11, after time off to rest his injured knee. "That's what we're leaning towards," Coughlin said. "We're counting on that taking place, certainly." The coach said it's possible Jacobs won't be able to practice before that game.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) was unable to practice on Friday and is questionable to play this weekend. Barring a setback, Tomlinson is expected to play.
*** Thursday Update ***
RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) did not practice on Thursday. "It's a lot better than Monday," Tomlinson said. "After two days of resting it, it feels a lot better, so I'm hoping on Saturday it'll be even better." Tomlinson said he felt better than he did in Week 17. "I hope to play, but ultimately it's not really my decision," he added. "Gameday, we'll see how coach feels and what he wants to do. But hopefully I'll be able to go."
"I just ran around a little bit, just to see what I may be dealing with, just to get an idea," Tomlinson said after practice Thursday. "Some things I did, I was good. Some things I did, I was sore. I'm just going to let it go, and if things hurt me, they hurt me. I'll just try to do as much as I can."
*** Wednesday Update ***
RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) was sore on Monday, a day after he suffered a groin injury in the Week 17 win over the Broncos. HC Norv Turner confirmed the injury is a strained groin but expects Tomlinson to play against the Colts. "He's a little sore, but again they expect him as the week goes on to get better and be able to practice and be ready to play," said Turner. "We'll keep a close watch on that." Tomlinson confirmed that the injury will likely keep him from being full speed this weekend. "No, I don't think I'll be 100 percent but we'll see what happens day-to-day, see how it goes and see what happens on Saturday," Tomlinson said. He did not practice on Wednesday.
RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) according to Chargers.com, the Chargers conducted a light practice Tuesday afternoon, and while they aren't required to issue an official injury report, Turner said that everyone participated in at least a portion and running back LaDainian Tomlinson "said he felt pretty good."
RB Cadillac Williams (TB) suffered a torn left patellar tendon in Week 17, but the severity of the injury is not as great as the tear he suffered last season when he ripped his right knee apart in a game in Carolina. "It's more of a tear off the bone, so the rehab process should be much easier," Williams said. The hope is that Williams will be back in time for training camp. But after returning from a 13-month layoff, Williams said he remains very frustrated by the latest setback. "It's tough," he said. "I was getting a few carries here and there and starting to feel like my old self again. My right knee, which is now my good knee, was feeling good. It's just a freak accident. I have no luck right now."

WR Anquan Boldin (ARI) was adamant on Monday about his playing status for the NFC Wildcard Game. "If anybody thinks that I'm going to miss this game, they're not too bright," said Boldin, who missed the last two games with a shoulder injury. "If my arm was broke, I'd be out there. I'm not missing this one." This is Boldin's first playoff appearance in six seasons.
*** Wednesday Update ***
WR Larry Fitzgerald (ARI) An Arizona court has ordered Larry Fitzgerald to stay away from his 11-month old son and his mother after being involved in an alleged domestic dispute. Angela Nazario (the woman Fitzgerald must stay away from) claims that Fitzgerald "grabbed me by my hair with both hands on the back of my head very, very hard and tossed me across the room."

Marshall had also undergone preseason surgery to repair forearm lacerations to an artery, vein, nerve, two tendons, and three muscles. "The back of my hand is still numb," Marshall said while cleaning out his locker room at team headquarters. "I'm not going to say I'm making excuses for myself, but maybe I didn't recover as great as I wanted to from my hand injury. I'm disappointed in myself."

WR Plaxico Burress (NYG) could possibly return to the team this week after his four-week suspension has concluded this week, but GM Jerry Reese says the team will address Burress after their season ends in the post season, which likely means he won't be involved with the team during the playoffs. "Plaxico is taking his time to get healthy and tend to the important matters he has in his personal life," Reese said. "Our medical staff has prescribed a treatment and rehab program for Plaxico with regard to his physical injuries. We will sit down with Plaxico at the appropriate time, most likely after the conclusion of this season."

TE Antonio Gates (SD) did not practice on Thursday. "If we were playing today, (Gates) probably wouldn't play," coach Norv Turner said. "I'm optimistic he will be able to play."
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, whether Gates can play will be a game-day decision, Turner said. For his part, Gates said he hasn't yet "tried to determine whether I can actually do it or not," indicating that he went out Thursday to work out a "game plan" for wrapping the injured area and getting him ready to play.
He also said the ankle problem isn't as debilitating as the toe injury he suffered in last year's postseason, which he played throughout, but largely without being able to do the things that made him a perennial Pro Bowl tight end.
Gates is officially a game time decision but the feeling seems to be that he'll start Saturday and be effective.

TM Baltimore Ravens (BAL) The Ravens have re-signed LB Robert McCune and placed WR Marcus Maxwell on injured reserve.
TM Buffalo Bills (BUF) Owner Ralph Wilson has decided that HC Dick Jauron will stay with the team as head coach.
TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) The Browns have fired HC Romeo Crennel.
Former Steelers HC Bill Cowher has spurned an overture by the Browns to become a head coach in 2009. Cowher told the Browns he wasn't interested, so Cowher will likely stay with CBS as a booth analyst this season.
The Browns will interview fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini soon, possibly late Tuesday or Wednesday, a league source said today.

TM Dallas Cowboys (DAL) FB Deon Anderson reportedly got into a fight with LT Flozell Adams on the flight home following the team's Week 17 game. The fight was broken up by G Leonard Davis. The two players seem to have gotten over whatever caused the altercation.
TM Denver Broncos (DEN) The Broncos fired HC Mike Shanahan. Shanahan had three years and upwards of $20 million remaining on his contract. Shanahan, who just completed his 14th season at the helm of the Broncos, was the longest tenured coach in franchise history. He also held the title of executive vice president of football operations.
TM Detroit Lions (DET) The Lions have fired HC Rod Marinelli on Monday. Owner William Clay Ford also promoted Tom Lewand to team president and Martin Mayhew to general manager. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry, assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry and secondary coach Jimmy Lake also were fired, and defensive line coach Joe Cullen's contract will not be renewed. Offensive coordinator Jim Colletto was reassigned to offensive line coach. Assistant director of pro personnel Dave Boller will not be retained.

TM Kansas City Chiefs (KC) A remarriage between the Kansas City Chiefs and Marty Schottenheimer is "highly unlikely," Schottenheimer said Wednesday. Schottenheimer's name has been floated as a possible candidate to return to Kansas City, whether as general manager, coach or in a front-office consulting role similar to the position that Bill Parcells holds in Miami. Schottenheimer didn't shoot down a return to the Chiefs during a lengthy conversation with The Star but said he did not expect to be working in Kansas City next season.
TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) Executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells has a one-time opt out clause in his contract that would allow him to walk away from the team, with the remaining $9 million in guaranteed money in his current deal fully paid, if team owner Wayne Huizenga sells the team. Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the team to New York developer and team part-owner Stephen Ross earlier in 2008, and if the transaction is approved by the league, Parcells needs to notify Ross of his intentions within 30 days of Ross assuming ownership.
TM New York Giants (NYG) The Giants have promoted CB Rashad Barksdale off their practice squad and signed LB Rich Scanlon. To make room on the roster, the Giants put CB Sam Madison on injured reserve and waived LB Edmond Miles. Madison broke his right ankle in Week 17 at Minnesota.

TM New York Jets (NYJ) Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said on Tuesday that Bill Cowher has taken himself out of the running for the head coaching position with the team. "After reaching out to Coach Cowher's representatives, we were informed tonight that he is not a candidate for the position," Speight said.
TM New York Jets (NYJ) Owner Woody Johnson said that a decision was made in the wee hours early this morning hours that it was time to move in a different direction and he announced the firing of HC Eric Mangini earlier Monday morning. "This isn't a decision that we reached yesterday or 10 minutes ago," said Johnson. "This is a decision that was basically running through the season. We respect Eric for what he's done. But we want to build on the successful foundation that he's laid." Both Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum said emphatically that they want QB Brett Favre back.
Former Steelers HC Bill Cowher has reportedly spurned an overture by the Jets to become a head coach in 2009. Cowher told the Jets he wanted total control and to bring in his own personal director. The Jets want to keep GM Mike Tannenbaum, so Cowher will likely stay with CBS as a booth analyst this season. However, there are separate reports indicating that Cowher will meet with the team officials regarding their head coaching position.
TM Oakland Raiders (OAK) Owner Al Davis will begin interviewing head coaching candidates this week and the list has been narrowed to around five choices which include Giants OC Kevin Gilbride, Raiders advance scout Paul Hackett and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, according to team sources. Davis will have the final say on the new coach but has said "he wants to move quickly," club spokesman John Herrera said.
TM San Francisco 49ers (SF) The 49ers have signed HC Mike Singletary to a contract for four years that is worth $10 million.
Also, the 49ers have fired OC Mike Martz after just one season with the team. Martz was the team's sixth OC in the past six years.
