Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson continues to perform exceptionally well, pushing any thoughts of Brady Quinn seeing action out of the minds of most Browns fans. Anderson hit Braylon Edwards three times for touchdowns and added another on a bootleg run near the goal line. He finished 18-25-245-3-0, extremely good numbers for any QB - except for maybe one named Tom Brady. Anderson seems to be the likely starter for as long as Cleveland remains in the playoff hunt contender.
QB Kyle Boller, BAL - Kyle Boller started Week 6 against the St. Louis Rams, replacing Steve McNair. Boller posted average numbers (17-29-185-0-1), but he has already been named the starter by head coach Brian Billick for Week 7. Billick doesn't expect Steve McNair to play next week, as the Ravens seem content to let him rest through their Week 8 bye. If you need a spot starter, Boller could be a decent option against Buffalo.
QB Tom Brady, NE - Tom Brady has been unbelievable this season. In week six, against a good Dallas Cowboy defense, Brady had 46 pass attempts, completing 31, for 388 passing yards and five scoring passes. This game brought the former season totals of the former Michigan Wolverine to 1,771 passing yards, 21 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. He is definitely on a record-setting pace. The additions of Moss, Welker, and Stallworth have seemed to help quite a bit.
QB Drew Brees, NO - The Saints and Drew Brees played well in their first win of the season, against Seattle on Sunday night. Brees was 25 for 36 for 246 yards and 2 TDs, but more importantly, he moved the ball down field well executing three TD drives in the first half. The Saints converted 50% of their third downs and Brees had 16 passing first downs, most of which occurred in the first half. The Saints failed to score in the second half, but the damage was already done. Whether this is a sign of things to come, is yet to be determined, but Brees was finally able to recapture at least some of that mojo that he had in his Pro Bowl season last year. New Orleans' next three games are ATL, @SF, JAC.
QB Jason Campbell, WAS - Campbell put up pretty good numbers (21-37-217-1-1, 2-6 rushing and a TD) in Week 6 against Green Bay, but they should have been even better. Aside from Chris Cooley, his receivers let him down, dropping six passes that really should have been caught. Even his lone interception went off the hands of a Redskin. A concern going forward is the Redskin offensive line, as injuries are piling up and Campbell is likely to be under a lot of duress going forward.
QB Kellen Clemens, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kellen Clemens may get his opportunity in week seven or eight. The Jets are hesitant to make the switch from Chad Pennington to Clemens because there is no going back. But, after Pennington's poor performance, again, the leash just got shorter. The 24 year old from Oregon did play decent when called upon in weeks one and two and in preseason. The former Oregon star would have a big impact on the two star receivers, Coles and Cotchery. They would definitely benefit from a change at quarterback.
QB Kerry Collins, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Collins took the field for Tennessee against Tampa Bay after Vince Young left the game in the third quarter with a strained quadriceps. Young did not return and Collins passed for 125 yards on 10 of 20 passing in little under a quarter and a half. If Vince Young misses any time, Collins will be the QB for the Titans starting on the road at division rival Houston. Keep an eye on this injury situation. The Titans have primarily been a run first offense, but with Collins under center, that strategy might change. Tennessee's next three games are @HOU, OAK, CAR.
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - Garcia hasn't set the world on fire this year, but he has been quite efficient. Against the tough Titans defense, Garcia went 20 for 31 for 274 yards and a TD (with no INTs). That's a nice, solid day.
QB David Garrard, JAX - The move to get rid of Byron Leftwich is making more and more sense. David Garrard has led the Jaguars to a 4-1 record and he has not given up a turnover yet this season. This past week against division rival Houston, he passed for 221 yards with 22 completions on 34 attempts, including 26 yards on the ground. He gets a big test next week at home against the 5-0 Indianapolis Colts, who will be coming off a bye week. It's a tall order, but Garrard has not disappointed yet. Jacksonville's next three games are IND, @TB, @NO.
QB Brian Griese, CHI - Brian Griese completed 26 of his 45 passing attempts for 381 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the week six loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He now has enjoyed three good fantasy games in his three games as the Bears starting quarterback. The three-week total is 881 passing yards and seven scores.
QB Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - Hasselbeck had his best fantasy outing of the season on Sunday, throwing for 362 yards and two touchdowns (one interception). He made effective use of his wide receivers, getting Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram, and Ben Obomanu each double-digit targets. The Seahawks' next two games are against the Rams and the Browns (with a bye sandwiched in between), so Hasselbeck could continue to put up good numbers for the near future.
QB Damon Huard, KC - Huard bounced back from last week's shoulder injury with a solid outing, completing 25 of 35 passes for 264 yards and 2 touchdowns (no interceptions). Huard was efficient, generally making good reads and getting the ball to the open receiver. The Bengals are one of the league's worst pass defenses, however, so Huard may not look that good again until week 16 when he faces the Lions.
QB Cleo Lemon, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Cleo Lemon came into the week-six game against the Cleveland Browns with low expectations. Lemon led the Dolphins in a valiant comeback, coming up a little short. But, he played very well, completing 24 of his 43 passes for 256 yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Also, Lemon added two touchdown rushes on four carries. The one concern is that the Dolphins are now 0-6 and might turn to the rookie, John Beck, sooner than later. Next week will pose a difficult matchup against the New England Patriots.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - Donovan McNabb completed 22 out of 35 passes for 278 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 6 against the Jets, highlighted by a 75 yard touchdown to Kevin Curtis. McNabb looked comfortable back in the pocket, hitting Curtis and Reggie Brown. He was also thankful to have a healthy Brian Westbrook to balance out the offense. McNabb rebounded nicely from a terrible Week 4 game (without Westbrook) against the Giants.
QB Tim Rattay, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rattay was signed by the Cardinals on Tuesday of last week and was thrust into action with the injury to Warner. Rattay was unfamiliar with the offense and was responsible for five turnovers. He should play better the next time he is called upon, which could be as early as next week. Fantasy owners were reminded of Kurt Warner's proneness to injury on Sunday, and the Cardinals do have some excellent offensive weapons, so Rattay is somebody who may have some fantasy potential this season.
QB Vinny Testaverde, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - After not even a week of practice with his new team, 43-year old Vinny Testaverde started at QB for the Panthers on the road at Arizona and led his team to a victory. In doing so he became the oldest QB (43 years and 335 days) in the NFL to win a game. Testaverde got the start due to David Carr's ailing back. The Panthers have a bye next week and although there has not been a decision on who will start at QB in week eight vs. Indianapolis, Testaverde may get the nod over Carr due to his experience and his ability to not make mistakes - not to mention his ability to get the ball to Steve Smith. A QB controversy is brewing in Carolina, pay close attention to this developing story. Carolina's next three games are BYE, IND, @TEN.
Downgrade
QB David Carr, CAR - Carr did not play against the Cardinals in week six due to an ailing back injury that flared up on the plane ride to Arizona, of all places. His absence opened the door for veteran Vinny Testaverde, who found the fountain of youth, if for just one week in a win over Arizona. Testaverde not only got the win for Carolina, who is now 4-0 on the road, but he awakened star WR Steve Smith to a tune of 10 receptions for 136 yards and a TD score. No decision has been made on who will start at QB for Carolina in week eight vs. the Colts (CAR has a bye week 7), but Testaverde's knowledge of the game and ability to not make mistakes, could weigh in heavily. Don't count David Carr out just yet, but he could find himself on the bench, once again come week eight.
QB Brett Favre, GB - We're getting a bit shaky with Favre as the INTs have reared their ugly head. After throwing only two in the first four games, Favre has been picked off four times in the last two weeks and has only thrown one TD in that span. Favre has certainly come back to earth.
QB Trent Green, MIA - Hopefully, you aren't still holding on to Trent Green. He is reportedly mulling retirement and really shouldn't return just to risk permanent damage with a winless Miami team.
QB Steve McNair, BAL - McNair was a last minute scratch for Week 6, with Kyle Boller getting the start against the Rams. Head coach Brian Billick has already told the media that Boller will be starting next week as the Ravens hope that McNair is healthy enough for Week 9 after the bye.
QB Chad Pennington, NYJ - Chad Pennington has not played well this season. Peter King reported on NBC's Football Night in America that Chad Pennington would get one more start to save his job over Kellen Clemens. Pennington completed 11 of his 21 pass attempts for only 128 yards and one interception. The former Marshall star has shown a weak arm and poor decision-making.
QB Matt Schaub, HOU - Coming into the game at Jacksonville, Matt Schaub has passed for over 225 yards in each game this season. Add another week to that streak, because he amassed 259 yards on 19 for 31 passing and one interception. This is the second week in a row in which Schaub has failed to throw at least one TD pass. We don't consider his performance a downgrade, but the news that Andre Johnson's return might be delayed isn't exactly good news for Schaub. Thus, he deserves a downtick. Houston's next three games are TEN, @SD, OAK.
QB Kurt Warner, ARI - Warner made the upgrade list last week with the injury to Matt Leinart, but makes the downgrade list this week with an injury of his own. Warner threw for just 21 yards on Sunday before leaving the game with a sprained elbow (on his non-throwing arm). The injury may keep Warner sidelined against the Redskins next week as well.
QB Vince Young, TEN - Vince Young suffered what is being called a strained quadriceps on a running play halfway through the third quarter at Tampa Bay. He was seen on the sideline in obvious pain and did not return. Kerry Collins took his place. Before the injury, Young was 11 for 14 for 120 yards and an interception. He also had three carries for six yards and lost a fumble. Collins, in relief, went 10 for 20 for 125 yards. His presence on the field led to a fourth quarter TD run by LenDale White. It is unclear if Young will miss next week's game at Houston. Keep an eye on this situation. If Young misses time, Kerry Collins will be the starting QB. Tennessee's next three games are @HOU, OAK, CAR.

Running Back
Upgrade
RB Cedric Benson, CHI - Benson actually had a decent game against the stingy Minnesota Vikings rush defense. The Vikings are particularly difficult to run on with Kevin and Pat Williams up front. The former Longhorn had 18 carries for 67 rushing yards and added a couple of receptions for 18 yards. Even though is not a particularly high yards per carry average, it is much better than the 3.0 average he brought into week six. The Bears do miss Thomas Jones. It is evident when the starting back barely gets 3.5 yards per carry ... and it is a good game.
RB Ronnie Brown, MIA - Ronnie Brown had his fourth straight good game again in week six. The former Auburn star had 19 carries for 101 yards and added 9 receptions for another 69 receiving yards. This is the fourth game in a row over 100 rushing yards. It should be interesting to see how productive the third-year pro will be next week against the New England Patriots. The Patriots are great against the run.
RB Reggie Bush, NO - Possibly a one week mirage for Bush and the Saints, but we don't think so. The Saints won their first game of the season with much thanks to the multiple talents of Reggie Bush. Bush had 25 touches (19 carries and 6 receptions) for a total of 141 yards, most of which came in the first half. He did not find the end zone, but the fact that he was that productive in what was mostly yardage gained in the first half says a lot. He is clearly the Saints number one offensive weapon and this week gained 141 yards without batting an eyelash. The Bush show is gaining momentum. New Orleans' next three games are ATL, @SF, JAC.
RB Kevin Faulk, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kevin Faulk should benefit from the injuries to Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney. He played well against the Dallas Cowboys. Faulk finished with 13 carries for 50 yards and added three receptions for 24 receiving yards. Faulk really got going after halftime when he was the primary back. He had the majority of his yardage in the second half as the Patriots were trying to control the clock and the game. The 50 rushing yards in week six is half of his total through six games.
RB Jerome Harrison, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jamal Lewis was out for Week 6, and the starting job went to Jason Wright against Miami. Harrison came in for Wright and ran hard, picking up yardage in chunks. Harrison finished with 57 yards on just eight carries and added 15 more on a single reception. The Browns have Week 7 off so if Lewis is healthy after the bye, Harrison's value will drop significantly.
RB Edgerrin James, ARI - With Kurt Warner on the sidelines, the Cardinals' offense focused on the running game as Edgerrin James ran 22 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. James ran hard, breaking several tackles en route to his 23-yard touchdown run. James will face the above-average Redskins defense next week before the Cardinals have their bye; but after that he will have consecutive games against the Buccaneers, Lions, and Bengals -- three of the worst run defenses in the league.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson had his best fantasy game of the season, rushing for 119 yards on 31 carries and getting into the end zone for the first time this season. Johnson was inches away from a second touchdown, but was stripped of the ball from behind just as he was about to cross the goal line. Johnson ran hard and broke tackles, and for the second time this season, had some decent holes to run through. Johnson won't get to face the Bengals every week, but he does get to go against the Raiders twice in the next five games.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Kevin Jones is on bye this week but the Lions have informed Jones that he will be the primary ball carrier going forward. The former star of the Virginia Tech Hokies looks to now be healed from his Lis Franc injury. Jones will be tested in the next two weeks against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears. The entire Lions offense will need to improve from the week-five game against the Redskins where they were manhandled.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Thomas Jones has not played well this season. But, in week six against the Philadelphia Eagles, Jones played his best football of the season. The former Chicago Bear rushed 24 times for 130 yards and had one reception for 11 yards. Also, a good sign was that Leon Washington was not used much at all, giving Jones most of the touch opportunities. Thomas Jones and the Jets face two soft defenses in the coming weeks: Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - This is now two weeks in a row that Jones-Drew has scored a TD on a run of over 50 yards. It's safe to say the talent is still there and now it's starting to show. Jones-Drew still had only 12 carries on the day, but they went for 125 yards, including two TD runs. He also added four receptions for 59 yards. Wipe your brow Jones-Drew owners; it appears your high draft pick selection is alive and well. Jacksonville's next three games are IND, @TB, @NO.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK - Jordan was expected to either miss this week due to injury or at least lose some carries to other RBs. Neither happened. Jordan had 18 of the 20 carries that went to a back and also caught six balls. It appears that he is still the primary runner.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Adrian Peterson is an absolute monster. He had a huge game against the Chicago Bear defense in week six. Peterson rushed 19 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns against the Bears. He also caught a pass for nine yards. This is the rookie's third straight game with over one hundred rushing yards. He now has over 600 rushing yards in five games and has added 175 receiving yards. The former Sooner has played very well to start his career. He has to be considered one of the premier running backs in the league.
RB LaDainian Tomlinson, SD - Although it's hard to upgrade the player who has been number one on our "Top 250 Forward" list all season, Tomlinson's performance on Sunday is worth drawing some attention to. Tomlinson rushed for 198 yards and scored all four of the Chargers' touchdowns. He has reclaimed his position atop the RB leaderboard for year-to-date fantasy points.
RB Brian Westbrook, PHI - Westbrook returned from his layoff due to an abdominal strain that kept him out of Week 4. After the Week 5 bye, Westbrook looked good once again, running hard and not shying away from contact. Westbrook finished with 120 yards rushing along with six catches for 36 yards. He also scored a TD but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
RB LenDale White, TEN - Take note of this statistic: LenDale White - 25 carries, Chris Brown - 5 carries. The roller coaster that is the Titans running game may have taken a bigger turn to the White corner this past week. Not only did he see the majority of rushes for the Titans on Sunday, but he also found the end zone on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. It is looking like White will continue to see the majority of carries making Brown more of a change of pace back. Of course, if White fumbles or underperforms, he could find the pine again. Tennessee's next three games are @HOU, OAK, CAR.
RB DeAngelo Williams, CAR - Williams finished the day with 121 yards on 10 carries, including a TD run. Williams will eventually be a starting RB in this league, the question is when. Williams is a faster, quicker, shiftier compliment to DeShaun Foster and this week he showed it. Foster has a history of fumbling at inopportune times and this past week, he nearly did it again. The next possession was all DeAngelo Williams. If a tide is turning for the Panthers at RB, it may have started with this game. Monitor this situation. We don't think there will be an official change, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Williams see more carries as the season progresses. Carolina's next three games are BYE, IND, @TEN.
RB Jason Wright, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jamal Lewis was out for Week 6, opening the door for Wright as a starter for the Browns. Wright put up decent numbers (20 carries, 59 yards and a TD rushing, 3-39 receiving) including an early goal line score, but he was not the only back to shine for Cleveland. Wright split time with Jerome Harrison, who also performed well, and neither should hold off Jamal Lewis once he is healthy. The Browns have Week 7 off so Wright could see much less action in Week 8.
RB DeShawn Wynn, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - DeShawn Wynn is emerging as the top back for the Green Bay Packers. The rookie from Florida had 13 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown scamper. He had 13 of the 17 rushes by Packer running backs. Wynn now has four touchdown runs on the season. Even with Brett Favre throwing the ball a ton, it looks like Wynn could provide fantasy viability.
Downgrade
RB Shaun Alexander, SEA - As we mentioned last week in this space, Shaun Alexander is not running like his old self. He is not running with explosive acceleration, and he is often going down on first contact. Alexander finished with just 35 yards on 14 carries, his second sub-40 yard game in a row.
RB Ladell Betts, WAS - Betts had only three carries for 10 yards in Week 6 and another three catches for 21 yards against Green Bay. Betts' value keeps dropping along with his chances, and he is more and more becoming just a handcuff for Portis owners.
RB Chris Brown, TEN - Brown finished the game against Tampa Bay with just 5 carries for 26 yards. This is the second week in a row of less than 30 yards rushing. What started off as such a promising beginning to the season has turned sour over the last few weeks. It is looking like LenDale White will continue to see the majority of carries, thus making Brown more of a change of pace back. White has been known to cough up the ball from time to time so don't rule Chris Brown out just yet. Tennessee's next three games are @HOU, OAK, CAR.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Chatman didn't get a carry in week six. He obviously doesn't have a role unless Ronnie Brown is injured.
RB Brandon Jackson, GB - Brandon Jackson was held out of another game. DeShawn Wynn and Vernand Morency looked pretty for the second straight week. The rookie from Nebraska might have lost his hold on the starting job. The 2007 NFL Draft second round pick has battled a shin injury for a few weeks.
RB Brian Leonard, STL - The Ravens defense is tough and all, but 18 yards on 12 carries (with a long of four yards) is just pathetic.
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Lewis missed all of Week 6 due to his foot injury. Cleveland is on bye in Week 7, so Lewis now has two weeks to heal. Still, we aren't liking him breaking down this early in the season.
RB Mewelde Moore, MIN - Moore looks like nothing more than trade bait at this point of the season.
RB Sammy Morris, NE - Sammy Morris left the Sunday afternoon game against the Cowboys with a chest injury. The former Miami Dolphin has played well this season. He only had 10 carries for 14 yards before leaving the game. This is one situation to monitor. Morris has been a mild surprise this season, producing good fantasy owners.
RB Dominic Rhodes, OAK - Not so fast with the Dominic Rhodes bandwagon. Rhodes did get on the field, but he was a complete nonfactor in week six. Moreover, LaMont Jordan was healthy enough to carry the lion's share of duties.
RB Fred Taylor, JAX - Taylor is nicked up right now and getting outplayed by Maurice Jones-Drew. In week six, he was OK with not playing at the end of the game because it "was a given we were going to win". That's understandable, but it's not something you want to hear from your fantasy RB.
Holding steady
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber had just 47 yards rushing and 12 more receiving in Week 6, but New England is not your average opponent. Next week (Minnesota) is also a tough option, but after the Cowboys' Week 8 bye Barber should start putting up solid numbers once again.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - The Patriots kept Dallas from establishing a solid running game, with both their defense and their lead on the scoreboard. Jones had just six carries for 51 yards, but we expect that to change against weaker opposition after their Week 8 bye (Week 7 is a tough matchup against Minnesota).
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney cannot seem to get healthy. He was battling a shoulder injury in preseason and now is suffering from a groin injury. Even though it looked like Maroney might play against Dallas, he was held out of the game. The former Minnesota Gopher needs to get healthy. However, with the injury to Sammy Morris, this could be a golden opportunity for Maroney to produce if he can finally play.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Chester Taylor rushed 22 times for 83 yards against the Chicago Bears and looks to finally be healthy. He actually had two more rushing attempts than did Adrian Peterson, even though the rookie from Oklahoma had a monster game. The former Toledo star had twice as many carries in week six than he had the only two other games he played. Chester Taylor might actually be a decent fantasy reserve now that he is healthy. However, with Peterson setting the world on fire, Taylor's role will be that of complementary back. He'll only be an attractive option if Peterson is out of action.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Berrian isn't necessarily listed due to his production in week six (although he did have a nice game). Berrian is here primarily due to the arrival of Brian Griese. While we thought it might be impossible for a Bears QB to surpass the 300-yard mark this season, Griese did just that against the Vikings. If he can continue to excel, Berrian will turn in consistently excellent fantasy production.
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - The Eagles worked over their bye week on getting Reggie Brown more involved in the offense, and that translated to his performance against the Jets. Brown finished with six catches and 89 yards, exceeding his total yards for the season. If Brown was recently waived in your fantasy league, consider picking him up.
WR Nate Burleson, SEA - With Deion Branch and D.J. Hackett sidelined with injures, Nate Burleson was Matt Hasselbeck's favorite target on Sunday, getting 15 looks in the passing game. Burleson was used mostly on underneath routes, and turned a little flip pass into a nice 22-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks' next two games are against the Rams and the Browns, each of whom have below average pass defenses this season.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton continues to fill in for Terry Glenn, but more and more it looks like he should be an NFL starting WR regardless of the preseason depth chart. Crayton had five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown, and he remains a favorite target for QB Tony Romo. Crayton should have additional chances next week against Minnesota before the Cowboys' Week 8 bye.
WR Ronald Curry, OAK - Curry finished with mediocre stats (6 catches for 73 yards, no touchdowns), but was close to having a much bigger day as he was pushed out of bounds at the one yard line in the second quarter, and then brought down at the three yard line in the fourth. Curry showed excellent hands on Sunday, making several tough grabs, and led the Raiders with 11 targets. (Curry has led or tied for the lead in targets in four of the Raiders' five games this season.)
WR Kevin Curtis, PHI - Donovan McNabb connected with Curtis early in Week 6, and two Jets defenders collided trying to tackle him. Curtis stepped beyond them and then raced the rest of the way for a 75 yard touchdown. Curtis added four more catches to raise his total to 121 yards.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards just looked unstoppable against the Miami Dolphins, catching three touchdowns in Week 5. Edwards only had five receptions and 67 yards, but he consistently got open in the Red Zone and made each chance count. He has to be regarded as a top flight fantasy receiver going forward and is a must start after the Week 7 bye.
WR Bobby Engram, SEA - Engram was very efficient Sunday, catching 9 of the 11 passes thrown in his direction for 120 receiving yards. With games coming up against the Rams and Browns, Engram could continue to produce over the near future.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - We'll give a slight upgrade here to Joey Galloway because he found the end zone on a short reception that turned into a 69-yard TD. That was about the extent of Galloway's day as he only had four receptions on five targets for 97 yards. He was not a focal part of the offense but was productive in the little action he saw. Tampa Bay's next three games are @DET, JAC, ARI.
WR Marques Hagans, STL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With Isaac Bruce, Dante Hall, and Dane Looker inactive, Marques Hagans stepped in with the first unit after Drew Bennett left the game in the first half with a hamstring injury. Hagans responded with several big plays, showing a knack for getting open -- although he was inconsistent catching the ball. Hagans led all Ram receivers with 5 catches for 74 yards, potentially earning him more playing time going forward.
WR Chris Henry, CIN - Henry is nearing a return from suspension, and the Bengals desperately need something good to happen on the field. A quality third WR will help this offense.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Don't look now, but "Housh" is on pace for over 20 touchdowns and close to 150 catches. He added eight catches, 145 yards and two scores in Week 6 against Kansas City, and he seems likely to continue that torrid pace against the Jets in Week 7.
WR Eric Moulds, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - We have an Eric Moulds sighting. Moulds had six receptions for 49 yards and a team leading nine targets against the Buccaneers on Sunday. While this is not a big accomplishment, the Titans may be without QB Vince Young who left the game with a strained quadriceps. The presence of a more passer friendly Kerry Collins bodes well for Eric Moulds. If Collins starts at QB, Moulds could see more of the same next week at Houston. Tennessee's next three games are @HOU, OAK, CAR.
WR Ben Obomanu, SEA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With Deion Branch and D.J. Hackett out of the line-up, Obomanu became part of the three-way rotation at WR for the Seahawks on Sunday, and came through with 72 yards and a touchdown. Obomanu has deep speed and big-play ability, but inconsistent hands. His efforts on Sunday, however, will likely earn him more playing time in the future.
WR David Patten, NO -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Perhaps a one-game wonder, but David Patten led the Saints with eight receptions for 113 yards in a win over the Seahawks. Patten hasn't had over two receptions in a game this season until his eight catches this past week, so don't look too deep into this. Drew Brees looked his way often and the Saints won their first game as a result. Coincidence? Probably, but you never know. New Orleans' next three games are ATL, @SF, JAC.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Insert an experienced and capable down field arm like Vinny Testaverde and Steve Smith goes off for 10 receptions for 136 yards including a 65-yard TD pass that gave Carolina the lead for good. Steve Smith owners, you can step back from the edge of the diving board - the season is not lost. Although, no decision has been made on who will start at QB for Carolina, one thing is certain - Steve Smith benefited more with Testaverde under center as opposed to a less experienced David Carr. Monitor this situation closely, because Steve Smith's production might hinge on who gets the start. If you're a Smith owner, you may want to hope for Testaverde getting the nod. Carolina's next three games are BYE, IND, @TEN.
WR Donte Stallworth, NE - Donte Stallworth is upgraded for the second week in a row. Teams are working hard to keep the ball away from Randy Moss leaving Stallworth and Wes Welker in single coverage. The journeyman receiver had seven catches for 136 yards and a touchdown grab. He looked strong and fast in the week six matchup against the Cowboys. The former Eagle seems to enjoy being in such a high-octane offense. Donte Stallworth's season total is now 19 receptions for 316 yards and a pair of scores. He will continue to have some big games with mediocre ones sprinkled in. Stallworth is a viable fantasy WR3 in most leagues and is startable most weeks.
WR Kevin Walter, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kevin Walter had 12 catches for 160 yards in Week 6 at Jacksonville. He was clearly the number one option for Matt Schaub this past week and the trend may continue with the news that WR Andre Johnson may not be returning as early as expected. The previous three games, Andre Davis was the go-to WR for Schaub, but not this past week. This is not a huge upgrade, but it's hard to ignore a player who had 12 catches and 160 yards. Houston's next three games are TEN, @SD, OAK.
WR Jeff Webb, KC -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With Eddie Kennison out of the line-up, Jeff Webb may have established himself as the Chiefs' number two wide receiver, moving ahead of Samie Parker. Webb caught seven of the eight balls thrown his way on Sunday, including a one-handed catch in the first quarter on third down. Webb converted two more third downs in the game, although he did have a fumble.
WR Wes Welker, NE - Wes Welker had another very good game against the Dallas Cowboys. He also benefited from all of the focus on Randy Moss. Welker had 11 catches for 124 yards and two scoring grabs. He now has a six-week total of 38 receptions for 386 yards and 3 scoring grabs. The former Dolphin provides a good fantasy WR3 for standard scoring leagues and is a legitimate fantasy WR2 in leagues that award a point per reception. He seems to be Tom Brady's safety blanket.
WR Troy Williamson, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rare is the WR that catches two balls deserving of an upgrade, but that's just how far Troy Williamson had fallen. The Vikings are clamoring for someone to excel, and Williamson is likely the most talented WR on the roster.
Downgrade
WR Drew Bennett, STL - Bennett suffered a hamstring injury in week six, but he didn't catch a pass in almost a half of activity. The crummy Rams offense combined with Bennett's propensity for injury leaves us completely underwhelmed here.
WR Drew Carter, CAR - We know some of you are still holding on to this guy. Please stop...he's not going to help your team.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - Laveranues Coles had a nagging knee injury this past week. He played and was targeted by Pennington. The weak arm of Chad Pennington is not helping matters any. The former Redskin had one catch for 27 yards in week six. Keep an eye on the injury this week to see if it stretched out for another week. Coles, and Cotchery, will benefit if and when Kellen Clemens becomes the starting quarterback for the Jets.
WR Marques Colston, NO - Colston scored a TD, yet we're still downgrading him. He had only one catch for two yards, the lone TD reception. Even when the Saints offense is clicking, it appears as if Colston is not the offensive focal point that he was last year. He had 22 receptions coming into the week six game at Seattle, but this poor outing of only one reception can't be ignored. New Orleans' next three games are ATL, @SF, JAC.
WR Andre Davis, HOU - Davis only caught three passes for 30 yards against Jacksonville, but he was involved in more action that was reversed thanks to instant replay that won't reach the box score. In the first quarter Davis appeared to score a TD on a short pass, but it was determined that he fumbled the ball just inches before crossing the goal line. As a result the play was ruled a touchback as the ball was fumbled out of bounds in the end zone. Later, Davis caught a pass in the fourth quarter and was down on the ground when the ball wrestled away. After further review, it was ruled an interception. While Davis could've had a better day stat-wise, there's still the fact that teammate Kevin Walter led all WRs with 12 receptions on 15 targets for 160 yards. It appears that Davis may not be the #1 WR option for Houston. At least that wasn't the case on Sunday. Houston's next three games are TEN, @SD, OAK.
WR Devery Henderson, NO - Henderson teased us with a nice week five outing, but the coaching staff wasn't impressed. Henderson did not start in week six and didn't even catch a pass (his second goose egg of the year). Henderson is currently seventh on the team in receptions.
WR Vincent Jackson, SD - It is clear that Jackson will simply not get nearly as many looks this season as most number one wide receivers. Despite having missed no time so far this season with bye or injury, Jackson is tied for 43rd in the league targets. Jackson had one catch for five yards against the Raiders, as the Chargers spread the ball around fairly evenly to seven different receivers.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Johnson was thought to be returning from an injured knee as early as next week against the Titans, but recent news now says it could be week 11 before he sees the field again. This is quickly becoming a lost season for Andre Johnson and his owners, but when he does return, he is surely to produce, provided he is 100%. Monitor this situation, because just because it's news doesn't necessarily mean it will happen. Hang in there Johnson owners, if anything he'll be fresh and healthy for the stretch run. Houston's next three games are TEN, @SD, OAK.
WR Santana Moss, WAS - Moss was very unproductive against Green Bay, finishing with no catches and just one touch of the ball. He was involved in a reverse and proceeded to fumble the ball away to the Packers, a play on which they scored a touchdown. Later in the fourth quarter Moss took himself out due to cramping. It seemed like he was sulking and decided to take himself out of the game rather than related to a particular injury.
Holding steady
WR Ike Hilliard, TB - Hilliard continues to be consistent catching four balls for 59 yards. He led the Buccaneers with seven targets and now has three games in a row of seven targets or more. Tampa Bay's next three games are @DET, JAC, ARI.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Kyle Brady, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kyle Brady caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the week-six game against the Dallas Cowboys. He had one catch for a one-yard touchdown reception. Ben Watson left the game due to an ankle injury from a tough Roy Williams tackle. The veteran tight end is known to be more of a blocker but could see extra scoring opportunities if Watson is out for any length of time.
TE Chris Cooley, WAS - Cooley caught nine balls for 105 yards and a touchdown in Week 6, leading all Redskin receivers. With Washington struggling to find healthy options in the passing game, Cooley looks to be a fixture and a safety outlet for QB Jason Campbell.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - This is the 5th week in a row that we have upgraded Owen Daniels. He now has five consecutive games of at least five receptions and 56 yards. This past week Daniels had five receptions for 79 yards. He has yet to find the end zone this season, but the production is definitely there. Houston's next three games are TEN, @SD, OAK
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC - Gonzalez has been hot over the last four weeks, catching 29 of the 40 passes thrown his way for 369 yards and 3 TDs. He consistently got open against the Bengals and finished with 9 catches for 102 and two touchdowns.
TE Donald Lee, GB - Donald Lee had another good game. He is quietly having a good fantasy season. Lee had three receptions for 75 yards in the week-six game against the Washington Redskins. He now has a season total of 22 receptions for 270 yards and one touchdown. Lee is still available on many waiver wires and makes a very good bye week replacement. Also, Bubba Franks was carted off of the field in the game. If Franks misses any time, look for Lee to be even more productive.
TE Zach Miller, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - While he doesn't look much like a difference-making fantasy option right now, Zach Miller has the potential to be very good over the remainder of the season. He finally found the endzone in week six and should be involved in the passing game going forward.
TE Greg Olsen, CHI - Greg Olsen is upgraded again this week. He looks like a special player. The rookie had five catches for 63 yards in week six. In the last two weeks, the former Miami star has accumulated nine receptions for 120 yards and a scoring grab with Griese at the helm. Olsen seems to be one of Griese's favorite targets. With the lack of weapons in the Bear passing game, Olsen looks to be a legitimate red zone target that has the confidence of his veteran quarterback.
TE Quinn Sypniewski, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Todd Heap left the Week 5 contest in the second quarter and Quinn Sypniewski stepped right in as the primary tight end once again. He posted just two catches and 10 yards, but if Heap is out again next week and you are in a dire need for a TE, Sypniewski may fill the bill.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow put up great numbers again in Week 6 against Miami, catching five balls for 90 yards. If it were not for a guy named Antonio Gates, Winslow would be the #1 TE in all of fantasy football.
Downgrade
TE Bubba Franks, GB - Bubba Franks was carted off the field Sunday in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury. Franks was held without a catch in the week-six matchup against the Redskins. Brett Favre targeted him in the back of the end zone. Donald Lee has played better than Franks so far this season.
TE Todd Heap, BAL - Heap was sidelined once again in Week 6 with a reoccurrence of his leg problem in the second quarter. He did not return to the game and finished with no catches against the Rams. Watch the injury reports, but expect to be looking for other options to replace Heap in your lineup for Week 7.
TE Alex Smith, TB - Smith was carted off the field with an ankle injury in the game against Tennessee. He caught only one ball for 15 yards, before the injury. His status for week seven is unknown. Tampa Bay's next three games are @DET, JAC, ARI.
TE L.J. Smith, PHI - He was supposedly fairly healthy (probable on the injury report), but L.J. Smith did very little against the Jets. A one-catch, eight-yard day is just appalling. It's becoming obvious that this injury will keep Smith's numbers down all season.
TE Ben Watson, NE - Ben Watson injured his ankle on a tackle by Roy Williams in the week-six game against the Dallas Cowboys. He had one catch for 28 yards before leaving the game. Watson was coming off of a strong game in week five. Also, the former Georgia star had five scoring grabs in the first five weeks of the season. With the focus of the defense on Randy Moss, Watson started the season in a strong manner.
Holding steady
TE Jason Witten, DAL - New England held Witten to just three catches for 47 yards, but you cannot expect a touchdown every week nor 100+ yards. The opponents will certainly get easier and Tony Romo will target Witten plenty.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Kris Brown, HOU - While it seems odd to covet the Texans PK, Kris Brown is having a nice season. He has 11 FGs over the last three weeks, and Houston should score more when Andre Johnson finally returns.
PK Stephen Gostkowski, NE - Gostkowski is likely the safest PK in the league right now. The Patriots are absolutely unstoppable on offense, so you know he won't give you a zero. Of course, you might be "stuck" with five PATs, but that's not too bad of a downside.
PK Matt Stover, BAL - Some teams have one main guy who puts up all the points for their team. No, we don't mean LaDainian Tomlinson - we mean the Ravens' Matt Stover. Stover put up five field goals and 16 of Baltimore's 22 points against the Rams, converting from 43, 42, 23, 31 and 36 yards.
Downgrade
PK David Akers, PHI - David Akers is struggling mightily with three misses in his last two games. Of course it's entirely possible that he'll turn things around, that lack of accuracy can really hurt a fantasy team.
PK John Carney, JAX - The Jaguars are winning, so all seems OK. However, John Carney is kicking poorly lately. Over his last two games, he has connected on only two FGs while missing two FGs and an almost unbelievable two missed PATs. If your league deducts points for missed kicks, Carner is hurting you right now.
PK Olindo Mare, NO - The Saints offense finally turned in a nice game, but Olindo Mare is not helping anyone's fantasy roster. He has two made and two missed FGs in the last two games. You also have to be aware that this Saints offense isn't going to start rolling up 30+ points every week, so Mare won't be able to turn in huge numbers.
PK Jeff Wilkins, STL - Along with the entire Rams team, Jeff Wilkins is disappointing. He has kicked only four FGs in the last three weeks (while missing two). There has to be a better option on your waiver wire.

Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Carolina Panthers, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Panthers defense has a pulse. They managed to recover five turnovers against the Cardinals on Sunday (3 INTs, 2 fumble recoveries). They also added two sacks including 1.5 from Julius Peppers, his first sacks of the season.
TD Baltimore Ravens, BAL - The Ravens came close to pitching a shutout in Week 6 over the Rams. The team had a record five interceptions during their Week 6 game. DL Dwan Edwards, CB Chris McAlister, S Ed Reed, CB Corey Ivy and CB Derrick Martin each recorded a pick, with the team also recording four sacks.
TD Washington Redskins, WAS - The Redskins are truly a legitimate defense and a must start week to week in fantasy football. They kept Brett Favre from throwing a touchdown and forced two interceptions. They yielded just one rushing TD and 10 points - the other score was by the Packers' defense.
Downgrade
TD Chicago Bears, CHI - The Bears defense was lit up again in week six with all of the damage coming from Adrian Peterson. Yes, the Bears are missing some key personnel. But, there is no way the Bears should allow 224 rushing yards to one player in one game. This is the second downgrade in two weeks. The Bears defense did not have to worry about a passing threat with the ineptitude of Tarvaris Jackson and could focus all of their energy on stopping the run. They gave up over 300 yards on the ground.
