Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson did not post remarkable numbers (10-18-204-2-1) but he did enough to keep the Browns out in front of the Ravens all game. Anderson hit Joe Jurevicius early for a touchdown and then connected later with Braylon Edwards for a huge 78 yard touchdown. Anderson seems to want to hold on to that starter role in Cleveland despite so many wanting to begin the youth movement with Brady Quinn.
QB Kyle Boller, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Boller was warming up and getting ready to come in against the Browns, but Steve McNair righted his ship before HC Brian Billick made a move. The hook is ready for McNair if he remains ineffective.
QB Daunte Culpepper, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Culpepper had a big fantasy outing on Sunday, rushing for three touchdowns and passing for two more, as the Raiders defeated the Dolphins. His fantasy stats outpaced his actual efficiency, however, has he completed just five of twelve passes for 75 yards. Culpepper did show good mobility, and his knee injury from 2005 does not appear to be a factor this season. While Culpepper's five-touchdown performance helped any fantasy owners who started him on Sunday, the Raiders are averaging just 154 passing yards per game (29th in the league), and JaMarcus Russell is still a threat to enter the starting lineup before the season's end. All that aside, he merits the upgrade because a week ago he was considered nothing more than Oakland's backup QB.
QB Trent Dilfer, SF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - We aren't excited, but if Alex Smith misses time due to injury, Dilfer is certainly capable of leading this team.
QB Trent Edwards, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Edwards was thrust into action early into week three. He looked average, but nothing stellar at all. After a full week of practice, taking all of the first string snaps, Edwards looked very good in week four. He was efficient and led the Buffalo Bills to their first win versus the New York Jets. The rookie from Stanford had 22 completions in 28 passing attempts for 234 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception. But, the performance by Edwards was better than anyone could have hoped. The rookie did battle injuries for most of his college career, so that is one thing to keep in mind. But, with a good game against the Dallas Cowboys in week five, Edwards could start a quarterback controversy.
QB Brett Favre, GB - Favre had a huge game in week four. Many thought the gray-haired one would have a tough matchup against the stout Minnesota Viking defense in the dome. Not only did Favre lead his Green Bay Packers to the win, and a 4-0 record, he was a very productive fantasy player. Favre finished the game with 32 completions on 45 pass attempts for 345 passing yards and a pair of scores. That is a very good game on the road against one of the top defenses in the league. The veteran finished as the eighth ranked fantasy quarterback in 2006. He looks to exceed that production in 2007.
QB Joey Harrington, ATL - Harrington was 23 for 29 for 223 yards passing and 2 TDs against the visiting Texans. Those are Tom Brady-like numbers right there. This is his second game in a row in which he has impressed. Harrington is slowly emerging into a backup fantasy QB and don't look now, but if he continues his consistent ways he might be a good start when the match up is right. Atlanta's next three games are @TEN, NYG, @NO.
QB Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - Hasselbeck averaged over nine yards per pass attempt on Sunday, completing 23 of 31 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns (one interception). For the season, Hasselbeck is averaging 8.1 yards per attempt and has thrown 7 touchdown passes to 3 interceptions. Hasselbeck completed passes to nine different receivers on Sunday.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Kitna has played great this season. In week four against the Chicago Bears, Kitna was very accurate and efficient. He finished the game with 20 completions on 24 pass attempts for 240 passing yards and two touchdowns. This was without rookie receiver Calvin Johnson in the lineup. The veteran from Central Washington is averaging over 300 passing yards and two touchdowns per game, with approximately a 70% completion percentage.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Romo's value resembles Google stock quotes - just when you think it can't go any higher, it seems to find a way. Just ask Jerry Jones or Romo's agent, as the star QB is due a big payday on a new contract any minute now. Romo threw for three touchdowns and over 300 yards plus ran in a fourth score against the St. Louis Rams. Romo has had field day after field day, and with so many options in the passing game, Romo's big numbers seem likely to continue.
QB Matt Schaub, HOU - Although Schaub didn't get a victory for his team, he looked impressive totaling 317 yards passing, 1 TD and 0 INTs. Another reason to upgrade here is the fact that he will be getting Andre Johnson back soon and that can only help his numbers. Schaub would be a great QB to target right now, because he's only going to improve as he gets more comfortable with the offense and it won't be long until Andre Johnson returns.
QB Kurt Warner, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Warner has outplayed Matt Leinart two weeks in a row. While HC Ken Whisenhunt still stands by Leinart as their starter, but it feels like Warner could get that job fulltime very soon.
Downgrade
QB Marc Bulger, STL - The Rams' offensive line again gave Bulger no time in the pocket, and Bulger struggled as a result. Playing with injured ribs, he completed 11 of 24 passes for 114 yards and no touchdowns (one interception). After attempting 82 passes in the first two games of the season, Bulger has attempted only 50 passes in the last two games (with no TDs in either contest).
QB David Carr, CAR - Carr probably isn't on very many rosters (Carolina probably wishes he was on one fewer), but he has to be a downgrade. He was simply awful.
QB Trent Green, MIA - Green is not producing great fantasy numbers even with good matchups. In week four against the Oakland Raiders, Green only completed 14 passes in 25 attempts for 158 passing yards, one score and two interceptions. This is the same Oakland Raider defense that had give up over 800 passing yards in three games. The Raiders also had given up a whopping 7.6 yards per pass attempt (ranking 21st in the NFL). The 37 year-old now has seven interceptions in the last three games. The emergence of Ronnie Brown may lead to the Dolphins to playing more of a conservative, ball-control game.
QB Matt Leinart, ARI - For the second game in a row, the Cardinals rotated Leinart and Warner at the QB position; and for the second game in a row, Warner was much more effective than Leinart. Leinart completed 7 of his 14 passes for 93 yards (no touchdowns, no interceptions), while Warner completed 14 of 21 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown (no interceptions). Head coach Ken Whisenhunt maintains that Leinart is the team's starter; but if the two-QB platoon continues -- and right now there's no reason to think it won't -- Leinart will not be a startable fantasy QB.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - Yikes. Color us concerned after that debacle in the Meadowlands. Was the game against the Lions in Week 3 a mirage? McNabb was sacked an unbelievable 12 times and had just 138 passing yards on 31 attempts. After struggling against Washington and now against the Giants, it appears that the Eagles receivers cannot beat press coverage and McNabb is not nearly as mobile as he used to be. Westbrook needs to get healthy for Week 6 to help this stuggling offense.
QB Steve McNair, BAL - If you read only the stats from Week 4, you will think that McNair performed pretty well and all is right with the world. In actuality McNair did get 307 passing yards, but it took him 53 attempts to get there. McNair also completed 37 attempts, but the yards per pass attempt and per completion were rather poor. He looked ineffective and backup QB Kyle Boller almost came in to replace him to just try and jump start the offense. Fortunately fro McNair he righted the ship, but Boller remains ready to go.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - Rivers had another poor outing on Sunday, averaging 5.0 yards per pass attempt and turning the ball over three times. He completed 21 passes on 42 attempts for 211 yards and no touchdowns (two interceptions). He faced pressure all day, and had three passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. On several occasions he was hit as he threw the ball, including on his first interception. Even on the few occasions when he was given time to throw, Rivers was not always accurate.
QB Alex Smith, SF - Smith was sacked hard on the first series of the game and left with a shoulder injury. The 49ers' offensive line struggled all day long as Smith's replacement, Trent Dilfer, was sacked another five times. The 49ers are averaging just 132 passing yards per game this season, second-worst in the league.
Holding steady
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - The Buccaneers are looking like a very good 3-1 team and Garcia is doing his job. His numbers aren't great, because the Bucs have been very successful running the ball. He could break out with a big game any given week, it just depends on how the defense handles the rush. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
QB Brian Griese, CHI - Griese came into the week four matchup with a chance to start against the Detroit Lions. He was replacing the ineffective Rex Grossman. But, Griese did not have a good game. He did have more passing attempts than Grossman was getting. The former Michigan star finished with 34 pass completions on 52 attempts for 286 passing yards, two scores and three interceptions. One of the interceptions was returned for a Lions score and the other two were inside the five yard-line killing opportunities for the Bears to score. Griese could be a good fantasy option if the Bears continue to throw the ball so often. But, the game was very ugly for Griese. This is definitely a situation to monitor with the Bears facing the Packers and the Vikings in the next two games.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - While Manning had 3 TD passes against the Broncos, he didn't reach 200 yards passing (193 yards). The Broncos were averaging an NFL low 88 yards passing per game, so that 193-yard effort was actually quite impressive considering the Broncos strength in that category. You can't bench Peyton, but he faces the Buccaneers next week, who are giving up only 10.8 points per game. Indianapolis' next three games are TB, BYE, @JAC.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Ronnie Brown, MIA - Brown had another huge game in week four. The former Auburn star had only 352 total yards coming into week four. This week, he had 15 carries for 134 rushing yards and a touchdown. Brown added 73 more yards on six receptions. Brown and the Dolphins get the Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns the next two weeks. Brown has asserted himself as the primary ball carrier. There is no hint of a running back committee with Jesse Chatman, who only had three carries in week four.
RB Correll Buckhalter, PHI - Buckhalter got the start in Week 4 against the Giants due to the injury to Brian Westbrook. Buckhalter has performed well in the past when healthy, and he stepped up his game once again and put up respectable statistics. Buckhalter had 103 yards rushing and another 35 receiving as he was far and away the biggest part of the Eagle offense in Week 4. Should Westbrook not be able to play again after Philadelphia's bye, Buckhalter is a solid replacement.
RB Reggie Bush, NO - Although the Saints had a bye this week, don't forget about the running back situation in New Orleans. With Deuce McAllister out of the picture with a season-ending knee injury, we think the Saints will rely more on Reggie Bush in the running game. New Orleans also will utilize veteran back up RB Aaron Stecker, but it's unclear how much of a role he will play. Take a flier on Pierre Thomas as possibly getting some carries too, but the main beneficiary will be Reggie Bush. New Orleans' next three games are CAR, @SEA, ATL.
RB Justin Fargas, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Fargas took over for the injured LaMont Jordan late in the second half on Sunday, and responded with 179 yards on 22 carries. Fargas had three runs for 28 yards or more, and showed quickness and toughness running off-tackle. The extent of LaMont Jordan's injury is not yet known, but if it is serious, Fargas and Dominic Rhodes may split carries in Jordan's absence. The Raiders are averaging 194 rushing yards per game (second in the league).
RB Earnest Graham, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Possibly still on the waiver wire, but doubtful. The Buccaneers may have lost Cadillac Williams for the season, due to a knee injury sustained in the first half against Carolina. The Bucs would likely replace Williams with a combination of Graham and Michael Pittman, with Graham seeing more plays. The Bucs running game has been very impressive in the first four games of the season, so it's very conceivable that both Graham and Pittman can be productive in a RBBC role. Graham had one rushing TD against Carolina and failed to punch in a second TD at the goal line. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
RB Ryan Grant, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Grant is getting more and more action as the season rolls along. The Green Bay Packers traded a sixth round draft pick in 2008 to the New York Giants for Grant. The rookie from Notre Dame was impressing in preseason for the Giants and looks good so far as a Packer. In week four, against the stout Minnesota Viking rush defense, Grant had three carries for 17 yards and two catches for one yard. He was in the game at the end when the Packers were trying to kill the clock. The former Golden Domer is a player to monitor. The Packers are using a running back committee at this time, just waiting for one of the four ball carriers to emerge.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson has received progressively more carries in each game so far this season (10, 16, 24, 25), and went over 100 yards for the first time this season, rushing for 123 yards on 25 carries. Thirty-seven of those yards came on Johnson's final carry of the day in garbage-time. Without that final carry, Johnson's stat-line would have been a much less impressive 86 yards on 24 carries. Nonetheless, this game was a positive step for Johnson. He received his most extensive workload of the season, and ran with great toughness and determination.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Jones had 52 yards rushing and 11 more receiving, but the key item for Jones was his rushing touchdown. With so much going to Marion Barber lately, Jones owners were quite concerned. HC Wade Phillips is sticking to his plan of using whichever back is due his turn, and Jones came up with the score this week.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Jones is increasing his role each week. He now has a score in each of the last two contests. In week four against a beat up Chicago Bear defense, the former Hokie had ten carries for 38 yards and a touchdown. He added six more yards on two receptions. Tatum Bell's costly fumble should only solidify Jones' hold on the starting job. Jones is a top fantasy ball carrier when healthy. Jones was a top ten running back last year until injury. As long as he can get and remain healthy, Jones could have a strong home stretch to the fantasy season.
RB Kenton Keith, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Just a reminder, if you have not handcuffed Joseph Addai with Kenton Keith, do so quickly, before someone else picks him up. Keith had 80 yards on 10 carries, and had one reception for four yards. Many of Keith's touches came in the fourth quarter when the Colts were running out the clock after Joseph Addai had left the game with a minor injury. Indianapolis' next three games are TB, BYE, @JAC.
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Lewis certainly wanted to make a statement against his old team that he could still perform as a feature back. Lewis did not put up a ton of production (23 carries, 64 yards) but did finish a drive with a one yard plunge for a touchdown.
RB Willis McGahee, BAL - McGahee broke 100 yards rushing on just 14 carries against the Browns in Week 4. He also added 32 more yards on two catches, most of them coming on a nifty 30 yard catch and run.
RB Michael Pittman, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Buccaneers may have lost Cadillac Williams for the season, due to a knee injury sustained in the first half against Carolina. The Bucs would likely replace Williams with a combination of Graham and Michael Pittman with Graham seeing more plays. The Bucs running game has been very impressive in the first four games of the season, so it's very conceivable that both Graham and Pittman can be productive in a RBBC role. Pittman had 90 yards rushing on 15 carries against Carolina in a limited role. One point worth mentioning, he had no receptions, which has long been a staple of Pittman's game. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
RB Dominic Rhodes, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rhodes has completed his four-game suspension, and will be eligible to play in the Raiders' next game in week six, following their bye. LaMont Jordan was injured in Sunday's game, and the injury may be serious. He was carted off the field, and was on crutches following the game.
RB Aaron Stecker, NO -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Stecker gets a nod here as an upgrade, because he needs to be on your radar. We are unsure exactly how involved he will be in the Saints offensive plans with Deuce McAllister now out for the season with an knee injury, but we know he will see the field quite often. Pay close attention to this situation, it's very possible that New Orleans will not want to use Bush as the main ball carrier, which means Stecker will see plenty of opportunities. New Orleans' next three games are CAR, @SEA, ATL.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Taylor was healthy and played in the week four matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have a strong rush defense, but the former starter had eight carries for forty yards and added a catch for another eleven yards. Peterson looks to be the unquestioned primary back, but Taylor should get approximately ten touches a game from here on out and would benefit if the rookie gets injured.
RB Leon Washington, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Washington had a surprising game in week four. The former Florida State Seminole had only 14 total touches coming into week four. But, Washington almost equaled that mark against the Bills. He had four carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. Leon added eight receptions for 38 yards. Leon Washington is on the waiver wire in many leagues. With Washington effective in week four, and Thomas Jones not, this situation is one to monitor.
RB Selvin Young, DEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Young is Travis Henry's backup, and received his most extensive playing time of the season on Sunday, rushing eight times for 81 yards. Young is averaging over nine yards per carry on the season (15 carries), and looks like he could step in and be very effective rushing behind the Broncos' offensive line if Henry were to miss any playing time.
Downgrade
RB Tatum Bell, DET - Bell had eleven carries for 46 yards and added a reception for six yards. He did have a costly fumble while fighting to score from short yardage. With Kevin Jones healthy and the fumble, his hold on the starting job is about over. Fumbling has been an issue for the former Bronco since his days at Oklahoma State. Tatum Bell will probably be used to spell Jones in the future, but his touches will go down. Also, T.J. Duckett will be healthy again to further split the Lion carries.
RB Cedric Benson, CHI - Benson has been a disappointment so far this season. Week four was no different. Against the Detroit Lions defense, the former Longhorn had 50 rushing yards on 15 carries. He added five catches for 24 receiving yards. He has 239 total rushing yards on 74 carries throughout the four games. The entire Bears offense looks out of synch and the running game looks lost. Benson has two tough matchups on the horizon, at Green Bay and Minnesota at home. Neither of these two teams gives up much on the ground.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Chatman had only three carries for two yards and no receptions in week four. Ronnie Brown is emerging into the primary ball carrier leaving little to share with Chatman. The luster of Chatman is fading quickly as his opportunity seems to have passed. This might be the time to dump Jesse Chatman.
RB Brandon Jackson, GB - It has been obvious for a while that the Packers prefer a healthy Vernand Morency over Jackson. However, it because apparent in week four that Ryan Grant is also preferred. It seems that Jackson's time as a major factor in the Green Bay backfield could be over.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Jones came to the New York Jets with high expectations. Week four was supposed to be a big game for Jones and the Jets against the Buffalo Bills. This week, Jones had 12 carries for 35 yards and two catches for 20 yards. This was to be one of the best matchups for Jones. But, there was little room to run. The former Virginia star has yet to find the endzone and is averaged 75 total yards per game. Jones and the Jets get the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles the next two games. He should be familiar with both from his days with the Chicago Bears. But, both teams are not easy to run one.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK - There are a couple of reasons to downgrade Jordan. First and foremost is his injury situation. He was knocked out of the week four game with a back injury. Justin Fargas was outstanding in relief and brings us to the second knock on Jordan - competition. While he has played very well this season, the display put on by Fargas will likely get him some looks. Also, Dominic Rhodes returns from league suspension this week and will certainly be involved in the Oakland offense. This team probably isn't good enough to have three quality fantasy backs, so Jordan's numbers will be diminished.
RB Willie Parker, PIT - Parker just could not get going in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals. Parker ran 19 times for a grand total of just 37 yards. He added 29 more on four catches but was unable to break anything bigger on the day. Parker should get back on track, but until such time lower his value some.
RB Brian Westbrook, PHI - Westbrook tried to suit up against the Giants for Week 4, but his questionable status was downgraded to inactivity for Sunday Night Football. It turns out that he has a muscle tear and could have torn the muscle further or damaged his ribs if he had tried to play through the severe pain. With such a report, it remains to be seen how effective he will be even after the Week 5 bye.
RB Cadillac Williams, TB - The Bucs have lost running back Cadillac Williams for the season. Williams is believed to have suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee when he was hit by Panthers safety Chris Harris following an 18-yard run in the first quarter.
Holding steady
RB Joseph Addai, IND - After two games in a row of not reaching 100 yards rushing, Joseph Addai put himself back on the map as being a top 5, if not top 3 fantasy back. Against Denver, he averaged 7.1 YPC enroute to a 136-yard rushing game with 3 receptions for 10 yards. He'll have a difficult task next week against a surprisingly good Buccaneers defense. Despite the 136-yard game, Addai failed to reach 20 carries (due to a shoulder injury that is said to be minor), which was his lowest carry total of the season. However, we must hold steady due to his injury and Kenton Keith's ability. Of course Addai will be the workhorse, but we are slightly concerned that he could be overworked. Indianapolis' next three games are TB, BYE, @JAC.
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Julius Jones got the touchdown for Dallas on the ground this week, but Barber was still a key contributor. Barber had 50 yards rushing and another 22 yards on two catches, which is a decent amount of production. Barber should continue to contribute and punch several balls over the goal line this year.
RB Derrick Ward, NYG - Ward led the way for the Giants once again, rushing for 80 yards on 19 attempts. Ward didn't ever break a big run against the Eagles, but he did just enough to keep the Giants alive and driving on Philadelphia. Ward added 26 more yards on three catches and is staking a solid claim on continuing to have at least a share of the job once Brandon Jacobs is healthy. However, it is possible that the goal line duties would all go to Jacobs, so we are unable to elevate Ward any further.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Berrian is the primary receiver on the Chicago Bears without regard to which quarterback is playing. This week, with Brian Griese at the helm, the former Fresno State star had eight grabs for 99 yards. His longest catch on the day was 26 yards. The Bears have two difficult matchups the next two weeks facing the Packers and the Vikings back to back. Berrian has yet to find the endzone, but he is averaging six receptions for 80 yards each game.
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe makes the upgrade list for the fourth week in a row, as the rookie continues to become a bigger part of the Chiefs' offense. Bowe was targeted ten times on Sunday (he was, in fact, the only Chiefs WR to be targeted at all), catching 8 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. Bowe made several difficult grabs on Sunday, and also showed excellent run-after-the-catch ability. He is quickly establishing himself as one of the more potent weapons on Kansas City's offense.
WR Deion Branch, SEA - Branch led the team with ten targets on Sunday, finishing with 7 catches for 130 yards. As expected, he is establishing himself as Hasselbeck's primary target: Branch has 33 looks on the season compared to 24 each for Nate Burleson and Bobby Engram.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - So much for a broken finger problem. Crayton had a career day against the Rams in Week 4, catching seven balls for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Crayton beat coverage and ran 59 yards for one TD, then followed up with another from 37 yards away. Crayton has been starting for the injured Terry Glenn, but if and when Glenn gets back you should expect for Crayton to stay very much involved in the offense.
WR Andre Davis, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Davis made his presence known in place of the injured Andre Johnson with 4 receptions for 70 yards last week and this week he follows that up with a 5 reception, 117 yard effort including a TD catch. If Andre Johnson misses another game, it looks like Andre Davis will be the main beneficiary once again. Although he was a popular waiver wire addition last week, he may still be out there. If he is and you need a bye week filler, grab him. Houston's next three games are @ATL, MIA, @JAC.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards has always seemed to post solid numbers against Baltimore, and Week 4 was no different. Edwards caught a huge 78 yard touchdown pass from Derek Anderson that accounted for most of his yards against the Ravens. Edwards finished with three catches and 97 yards.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Evans was a major disappointment coming into week four against the New York Jets. He had a total of five receptions for 29 yards. To make matters worse, only one of those catches went for a first down. This is the same Lee Evans known for making big plays. The Lee Evans who averaged about 16 yards per catch for his career before this season. Starting quarterback, J.P. Losman was injured in week three so rookie Trent Edwards started the week four game against the Jets. But, Evans started quickly with the strong-armed rookie at the helm. He finished the game with six receptions for 72 yards. Evans, and the Bills, gets the Dallas Cowboys in week five followed by a bye in week six. Evans looks to be a great play against the banged up Cowboy secondary.
WR Mike Furrey, DET - Furrey had another solid game with five receptions for 91 yards. The veteran receiver from Northern Iowa is averaging five receptions for 61 receiving yards every game. He has yet to find the endzone, but is a very good possession receiver. Furrey stepped in to a larger role in the offense with injured rookie sensation, Calvin Johnson, hurting with a back injury. Furrey is a strong receiver in points per reception leagues. Jon Kitna looks Furrey's way often when he needs a clutch reception.
WR Ike Hilliard, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Hilliard had a great first half and then was pretty much non-existent in the second half. He finished with 7 receptions for 114 yards where four of those catches were on the Bucs first offensive possession. The upgrade is still warranted, because it's pretty clear that Hilliard is the WR2 on the Buccaneers behind Joey Galloway. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
WR Santonio Holmes, PIT - Holmes has been considered to be the next #1 WR for Pittsburgh, after one Hines Ward relinquishes that role. Ward was out in Week 4, so Holmes had the chance to answer the question of whether he could put up enough production to be a feature WR. Holmes scored twice and caught six passes for 128 yards against Arizona, silencing any remaining critics. Holmes is ready to be a primary target, and could be a part of a solid 1-2 punch when Ward returns.
WR Michael Jenkins, ATL - Last week it was Roddy White getting all the accolades on the Falcons WR corps, this week it's Michael Jenkins. Jenkins caught all six targets thrown his way, for 64 yards and two TD receptions, both red zone TDs. He's someone to monitor that may still be available on the waiver wire. Don't expect two TDs each week, but the way the Falcons passing game is going recently, he may be worth the gamble with good match ups. Atlanta's next three games are @TEN, NYG @NO.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - Mason continued to fill his role as the top receiver for both Steve McNair and the Baltimore Ravens. Mason had 10 grabs for 78 yards in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, leading all Ravens receivers. With Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams both at less than full strength, Mason should continue to put up good numbers and be the main target.
WR Jerry Porter, OAK - The good news is that Porter caught two touchdowns on Sunday. The not-so-good news is that the Raiders passed the ball only twelve times all game, completing five passes for 75 yards. He should still be an upgrade as the weather was bad which mandated a running attack. He caught what was thrown to him, and that's all you can ask of a WR (and to be honest, that's more than we've expected out of Porter so far this season).
WR Sidney Rice, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rice really emerged in week four. Coming into the game, the rookie from South Carolina had four catches for thirty-one yards. In week four, he accumulated six receptions for seventy-five yards and a score. The touchdown play showcased why the Vikings chose Rice in the 2007 NFL Draft. Quarterback Kelly Holcomb was looking to the former Gamecock late in the game when he needed a play. Rice came into the NFL as a redshirt sophomore and has room to grow and mature, but he looks good on the field. The Packer defense is good and they still had difficulty stopping the rookie.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG - When Toomer is healthy, QB Eli Manning loves to hit a reliable target like Toomer to keep drives going. Toomer has always done well against the Eagles, and Week 4 was not much of an exception. Toomer had four catches for 54 yards, but he also lost a 52 yard touchdown due to a blatant pass interference where he would have made the catch if not for the penalty. Toomer should start opposite Plaxico Burress and get plenty of targets going forward.
Downgrade
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Brown struggled once again in Week 4 against the Giants, collecting just three catches for 17 yards. He struggled to get separation from the defense but also Donovan McNabb was under duress all game. Do not be surprised if there are more similar performances by Brown and the Eagles if they do not figure out how to improve their offense and beat press coverages.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - The Rams' passing game overall has looked quite shaky over the past two weeks, and Bruce has gotten only six targets combined during that period. He had only one catch yesterday (24 yards) before leaving the game with an apparent hamstring injury.
WR Mark Clayton, BAL - Clayton managed to be just healthy to contribute to the Ravens' Week 4 cause with three catches for 43 yards. Until he starts to produce as the top team receiver, Clayton remains much lower on the value chart overall.
WR Ronald Curry, OAK - After being targeted 12 times in week one, Curry has been targeted 4, 5, and 3 times over the next three games. The Raiders' passing attack has been almost non-existent, as the team has averaged only 154 passing yards per game on the season. The Raiders threw the ball only 12 times on Sunday.
WR Kevin Curtis, PHI - Curtis followed up his career-best Week 3 game against Detroit with not much of a game against the Giants. Curtis had just two catches for 21 yards. He struggled to get separation from the defense but also Donovan McNabb was under duress all game. Do not be surprised if there are more similar performances by Curtis and the Eagles if they do not figure out how to improve their offense and beat press coverages.
WR Darrell Jackson, SF - We could throw Arnaz Battle in this downgrade as well. We like both players, but this passing offense is anemic right now.
WR Samie Parker, KC - Dwayne Bowe has made him worthless, so the three of you that still have Parker can release him into the wild at this time.
WR Hines Ward, PIT - Despite Ward's saying that he would be a go for Week 4, he was ruled out and unable to play against Arizona. With Santonio Holmes' big day (6-128-2), Ward may have lost his unofficial role as the #1 receiver in Pittsburgh. Ward still has a starting job for the Steelers once he gets healthy, but his targets may go down going forward.
Holding steady
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG - Burress caught only four balls for 24 yards, but he did manage to make one of them in the end zone. Burress was able to play all game despite a tweaked ankle that kept him from practicing all week. That pattern is likely to continue, but Burress is definitely a "gamer" and should be able to go on that ankle. Doctors told him and Coughlin that playing won't make things worse so he can play through the problem. The Eagles played him tightly, so expect Burress to produce more going forward.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - Galloway had only one catch for 7 yards against Carolina. but this shouldn't be a big concern. For one, the Buccaneers ran the ball 42 times, but the majority of their passing plays were short to medium ranged, where Galloway isn't used all that often. We don't really see this as a downgrade for future weeks, but his lack of production compared to his usual numbers garners the downgrade. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
WR Marvin Harrison, IND - Harrison had only 1 catch for 8 yards against Champ Bailey and the Broncos, but the lack in production was also due to what is being called a bruised knee that kept him out of the game in the second half. Monitor this injury situation, but as of right now, it does not sound serious enough for him to miss next week's game against Tampa Bay. Indianapolis' next three games are TB, BYE, @JAC.
WR Vincent Jackson, SD - Jackson's stat line was unimpressive (three catches for 52 yards, no touchdowns), but he was close to having a much bigger day. His biggest play of the day, a 39-yard reception, could have gone for more had he not stumbled, allowing himself to be caught from behind. He dropped what should have been a sure 45-yard touchdown pass when he got open behind the defense. And he got open again behind the defense but was overthrown in the end zone. Jackson's targets have increased each week this season (5, 6, 7, 9), and while he is the third option in the passing game behind Gates and Tomlinson, he is the team's primary weapon at the wide receiver position.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - Owens was getting targeted nine times but just collected three for 33 yards. He lost a fourth catch on an overturned replay. Owens is a major factor in the Dallas passing game, and with Romo racking up big numbers Owens will produce a ton this season.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Smith had another quiet game with only 5 receptions for 32 yards. Maybe Jake Delhomme is a pretty good QB after all? Temper your expectations with Smith if David Carr is still the starting QB for Carolina. Next week he faces off on corner who couldn't beat out Jason David on the depth chart - - - pause for a dramatic "yikes". In the same breath, Smith always had good games against the Bucs and look what happened there. Hang in there Smith owners, it can't get any worse. Can it? Carolina's next thrre games are @NO, @ARI, BYE.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Clark led all Colts receivers with 6 catches for 76 yards (11 targets) and 2 TDs. Clark now has 4 TDs on the year and his lowest receiving game to date is 48 yards. He's very consistent on a team that is loaded with talent. That in itself is pretty impressive. Continue to start Dallas Clark with confidence. He is a top 5 fantasy TE right now. Indianapolis' next three games are TB, BYE, @JAC.
TE Desmond Clark, CHI - Clark had been conspicuously quiet in the first three games this season. He made up for it in week four with seven catches, 44 receiving yards, and a score. The addition of Brian Griese was good for Clark and he played well. Some of the success can be attributed to the large increase in passing attempts by the Bears, but Clark played well. He made the most of the opportunity. Clark was the only tight end catching one of Brian Griese's 34 completions.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - This is Daniels' third game in row of at least 5 receptions and a minimum of 50 yards receiving. Although he has not found the end zone yet, his production is consistently among the league's top 5 TEs. Houston's next three games are MIA, @JAC, TEN.
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC - Gonzalez has been a steady contributor this season, catching at least four passes in each of the Chiefs' four games so far. He got into the end zone on Sunday for the first time this season, and the emergence of Dwayne Bowe on the outside should open things up for Gonzalez the rest of the way.
TE Donald Lee, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Lee had his fourth straight week with exactly four receptions. Lee is still a name not familiar to many fantasy owners. Brett Favre looks to Lee over the middle when he needs a big catch across the middle. In week four, he had four catches for sixty-six yards, including a twenty-seven yard grab. His season totals are 16 catches for 172 yards and one score.
TE Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Shiancoe now has seven receptions in the last two games after practically nothing in the first two games. The new Viking followed a surprisingly good game in week three with four catch, thirty-eight receiving yards game. Holcomb seems to look his way. With Tarvaris Jackson expected back soon, this is a situation to monitor as Shiancoe could be a nice one-week option to replace a TE that is on bye.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - So much for health concerns. Winslow caught four balls for 96 yards against the Ravens in Week 4, highlighted by a 49 yard catch. With the Browns continuing to put up good offensive production even against a solid defense in Baltimore, Winslow represents a good TE value.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten continues to be a central figure in the Cowboy passing game. In Week 4 against the Rams, Witten caught six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Witten is a favorite target for QB Tony Romo and that should remain the case for the rest of the season.
Downgrade
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Davis has to get this downgrade as much as the team's WRs. This San Francisco passing game is very bad, plus Davis is missing time. While we love his potential, it's hard to justify holding onto the guy if you have needs elsewhere.
TE Todd Heap, BAL - Heap had a decent game statistically with four catches and 36 yards, but the reasoning behind this downgrade is that he suffered a hamstring injury that forced him from the game. Quinn Sypnewski came in and filled the void admirably for Baltimore, but Heap needs to get healthy and back out on the field. Watch the daily updates for Heap's injury status.
Holding steady
TE Jeff King, CAR - King was likely a waiver wire find for your team so this downgrade shouldn't hurt too much. King had only one reception for 14 yards against Tampa Bay. As long as David Carr is the starter, temper your expectations on any Carolina receivers. If Carr starts again next week, you may want to consider other options at TE. Carolina's next three games are @NO, @ARI, BYE.
TE Jeremy Shockey, NYG - Shockey struggled to get on track as he was kept in often to block, but he did manage one catch for 17 yards in the second half. The Eagles love to blitz and HC Tom Coughlin wanted to give Eli Manning lots of protection, so write this week off and hold tight - Shockey's numbers will go back up.

Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Tampa Bay Buccaneers, TB - This team is averaging only 10.8 points allowed per game. They are really starting to gel defensively and the sacks and turnovers are coming as a result. They currently lead the NFL with 8 forced fumbles. This defensive unit is getting very close to being an every week starting DEF/ST. Tampa Bay's next three games are @IND, TEN, @DET.
TD Dallas Cowboys, DAL - The Cowboys defense held the Rams to just seven points, and Dallas looks like they are back on track with three sacks and an interception. With games yet to come against struggling NFC East teams, the Cowboys could put up good numbers as a fantasy defense.
TD New York Giants, NYG - Any time you rack up 12 sacks, you should expect an upgrade. The Eagles struggled without Brian Westbrook, but that does not explain all the woes Philadelphia had against the Giants. Donovan McNabb was under a ton of pressure and did not get 150 yards passing on the night.
Downgrade
TD Miami Dolphins, MIA - The Dolphins defense was drafted high in most fantasy drafts. With injuries, especially to Zach Thomas, the defense lacks playmaking ability. Against Daunte Culpepper and the Oakland Raiders, the Dolphins caused one turnover (fumble) and had one sack. To make things worse, the Dolphin defense gave up 299 rushing yards to the Raiders. Further, the leading rusher was Justin Fargas (22 carries for 179 yards). This was Justin Fargas, not LaDainian Tomlinson or Larry Johnson. The Dolphins have now given up 119 points in four games.
TD Carolina Panthers, CAR - How quickly have things changed. Carolina continues to struggle defensively. They cannot put any pressure on the QB (two sacks in four games) and therefore are not making big plays or forcing that errant throw that so often results in an interception. This Defense/ST should be nowhere near your starting lineup.
TD Baltimore Ravens, BAL - Losing to the Cleveland Browns is one thing, but giving up 27 points is another. Couple that with just one interception and no sacks and you hardly have a Top 5 defense like they were regarded in the preseason.
