Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Kyle Boller, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Boller came in late in Week 3 in what was allegedly a mop-up role for starting QB Steve McNair. All that changed when the Arizona Cardinals put up 10 quick points and the game was suddenly tied. HC Brian Billick didn't want to risk that Steve McNair had tightened up on the sideline, so he left his former starting QB out there to lead the Ravens to victory. Boller did just that, completing 8 of 10 passes for 83 yards and setting up Matt Stover for the winning field goal. As to whether Boller's appearance with over 12 minutes left and just a 10 point lead is really a "mop-up" job, that remains to be seen. A QB controversy could be brewing in Baltimore.
QB Tom Brady, NE - Brady has been playing great this season. The added threats of Randy Moss and Wes Welker have been nothing short of awesome. The former Wolverine was 23 for 29 with 311 passing yards, four scores and no interceptions. This week's performance brought Brady's total to 70 for 88 totaling 887 passing yards with ten touchdowns and only one interception. He has an incredible 80% completion average and a 10-1 touchdown to interception ratio. Brady is averaging over ten yards per pass attempt. He is a top fantasy quarterback in any league.
QB David Carr, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Carr replaced Jake Delhomme, who left the game with an injury to his throwing elbow at the tail end of the third quarter. Carr went 3 for 4 for 56 yards, including a 38-yard pass to Keary Colbert. Carr's first two drives resulted in a TD and a FG that gave Carolina the lead for good. Carr looked good at times, but he was also sacked and anyone who knows David Carr's history, knows he takes a lot of sacks. Carolina sealed the victory by running the ball and Carr didn't have to make many big plays. Carr looked pretty good, but the strong running game dictated a lot of what Carr was able to do. Carolina's next three games are vs. TB, @NO and @ARI.
QB Daunte Culpepper, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Culpepper was decent in relief of the seemingly constantly banged up Josh McCown. Culpepper was far from amazing, but he didn't lose the game and the fans want him to play. That (and McCown's injury woes) could be enough to get Culpepper on the field.
QB Trent Edwards, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Edwards is upgraded due to the knee injury to J.P. Losman. The rookie from Stanford was 10 for 20 on the day for 97 yards and an interception after coming into the game versus the Patriots in the first quarter. Edwards entered the game and looked good in the first part of the first half. He was not productive in the second half, often looked rattled and out of sorts.
QB Brett Favre, GB - Favre followed up last week's 286 passing yards and three TD performance against the New York Giants with a record-setting 28-for-45 for 369 yards and three touchdowns against the very stout Charger defense. The soon to be 38 year-old looks great and his arm is active and strong. Favre also gets Jennings back healthy. The lack of a running game has led to the veteran passer attempting a ton of passes each and every game. Fantasy owners could do much worse than Brett Favre at quarterback in 2007. Favre finished 2006 as QB8 and should be a top ten fantasy passer again in 2007.
QB Trent Green, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Green had his best game as a Miami Dolphin in week three against the New York Jets. He completed 23-of-36 passes for 318 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception. The 37 year old is the reason Chris Chambers and Marty Booker is having good seasons. Green is easily a huge upgrade over Joey Harrington. Green really responded from the four-interception game last week and played very well. Granted, Green may not ever be a quarterback that is a must start for fantasy purposes, but he could be a decent spot start to cover bye week or injury issues.
QB Joey Harrington, ATL - Passing for 361 yards passing with 2 TDs deserves an upgrade, but don't go assuming those stats for Harrington every week. Carolina's defense does not look strong. Their secondary is weaker than years past and to compensate, they are playing back further, which is allowing more middle ranged passes. Harrington and HC Bobby Petrino discovered this weakness and exploited it by going with three and four WR sets most of the game.
QB Byron Leftwich, ATL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Leftwich is now an Atlanta Falcon. Whether or not Atlanta will replace Harrington with Leftwich is still a big question, but understand this - Leftwich thrived under a spread offense system at Marshall. You can bet Head Coach Bobby Petrino is well aware of his capabilities and how they can help the offense produce. It may take a few weeks to learn the offense, but if the wins don't come, don't be surprised if Leftwich sees the huddle by the end of October.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - The Pro Bowl caliber QB has returned. McNabb was surgical in Week 3, starting with 21 of 23 completions and three touchdowns to Kevin Curtis -- in the first half. McNabb finished with a few incompletions, but given his stellar numbers (21-26-381-4-0) and perfect QB rating and you can forgive him. Oh, and he also played without the knee brace. The NFC should take note, and the Giants' secondary next week should be very concerned.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - Rivers hadn't looked sharp in the first two games of the season, but returned to form yesterday, completing 27 of 36 passes for 306 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Rivers was generally accurate and timely with his throws, and got his WRs involved in the passing game, not just relying on Gates and Tomlinson. The Chargers will continue to throw the ball until teams stop stacking the line of scrimmage to contain Tomlinson. The Chargers' schedule gets significantly easier going forward.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Romo is proving that he can put up great fantasy numbers against any and all defenses. In the week three game against the might Chicago bears, Romo attempted 35 passes, completing 22 for 329 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Even the pick was not his fault. It went right through Patrick Crayton's hands. The five-year pro from Eastern Illinois has a three-week total of 860 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns to only two interceptions. He added another score on the ground. Romo is answering his critics about his ability to take another step forward, even without Terry Glenn. Terrell Owens and Jason Witten are his primary targets.
QB Kurt Warner, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Warner ended up playing about half the game for the Cardinals, and was far more productive than Matt Leinart. With the same number of pass attempts, Warner threw for about five times as many yards as Leinart, and completed two touchdown passes to Anquan Boldin in the fourth quarter. Warner played well enough to plant the seeds of a QB controversy in Arizona.
Downgrade
QB Marc Bulger, STL - Bulger had an ugly game on Sunday, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt and throwing three interceptions (no touchdowns). After attempting 41 and 42 passes in the first two games, Bulger attempted only 26 passes yesterday, with little to show for those throws. While he was sacked only once, he was under heavy pressure for most of the game.
QB Jason Campbell, WAS - The New York Giants had given up 80 points in two games and had been ripped to shreds by Tony Romo and Brett Favre. This should have been music to Jason Campbell's ears as just what the doctor ordered for him to get back on track. Campbell didn't perform well against the weak defense, completing under 50% of his attempts (16-34-190-1-0) and even worse he had fumble problems. Campbell put the ball on the ground on three occasions, which makes him an even shakier fantasy option.
QB Jake Delhomme, CAR - The downgrade here is due to injury. Delhomme increased his TD total to 8 on the season with 2 TD passes against Atlanta. However, he left the game right at the end of the third quarter with an injury to his throwing elbow and did not return. It is unclear if he will miss any time or not. He was seen on the sidelines wearing a brace on his elbow, being sure not to move it. Keep a close eye on this situation as David Carr may enter as starter next week vs. Tampa Bay. Carolina's next three games are vs. TB, @NO and @ARI.
QB Rex Grossman, CHI - What a terrible performance Sunday night. After sticking with him all of last season, one would think Grossman would never see the pine. However, with the losses piling up, a benching seems like it will be here soon.
QB Matt Leinart, ARI - Leinart struggled all day against the tough Baltimore defense, completing only 9 of 20 passes for 53 yards. Leinart was replaced by Kurt Warner at various times throughout the game, and for good at the end of the third quarter. Warner had a fantastic game against that same tough Baltimore defense, and could see more playing time in the future, thus limiting Leinart's opportunities.
QB J.P. Losman, BUF - Losman is downgraded after leaving the week three game against the New England Patriots with an injured leg. Losman has what is now called a grade one knee sprain and is expected to miss multiple weeks, as per coach Dick Jauron. Losman emerged from the locker room with crutches keeping his weight off his knee. This cannot be good news for a quarterback playing poorly as it is and now injured for a few weeks. Rookie Trent Edwards gets the opportunity shine in Losman's stead.
QB Eli Manning, NYG - Manning not only had weak passing statistics but he also looked indecisive and threw terrible interceptions. With questions lingering about his own health (shoulder injury in Week 1) and his primary receiver's health (Plaxico Burress), the lack of confidence may be understandable. That doesn't mean you have to take pity on him and start him for your fantasy team. Look elsewhere until Manning has a good game.
QB Steve McNair, BAL - McNair left the Week 3 game against Arizona with over 12 minutes left in the contest and just a 10 point lead. HC Brian Billick stated that it was to protect his injuries, but McNair has said that he was fine. Could there be a QB controversy very soon, if not already, for the Ravens? Stay tuned, but if you own McNair you better check on Kyle Boller's availability.
Holding steady
QB David Garrard, JAX - Garrard didn't have great stats, 14 for 20 for 154 yards and a TD, but he led his team to a victory on the road at Denver. The Jaguars held the ball for over 38 minutes, which kept the Broncos at bay. One point worth note, Garrard had 12 rushes for 52 yards. Jacksonville has a bye next week, but then @KC and home for HOU.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - You couldn't have expected him to repeat his Week 2's numbers, could you? Certainly not. Palmer had a return to normalcy in Week 3 against Seattle, where he threw for 342 yards but just one touchdown. The Bengals moved the ball well between the 20 yard lines but struggled to punch the ball across the goal line. Palmer should rebound going forward and put up many multi-TD games the rest of the season.
QB Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - Roethlisberger had a pedestrian performance but did complete 65% of his passes (13-20-160-1-0) and a lone touchdown to TE Jerame Tuman. The Steelers struggled in punching the ball across the goal line in Week 3 against a surprisingly challenging San Francisco defense. Roethlisberger should continue to produce and fare better against Arizona next week.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber has had a great start to the 2007 season. Many doubted whether the former Minnesota Gopher could keep up the pace. Well, he has. Against the very good Chicago bears defense, Barber had 15 carries for 102 rushing yards and a score plus he added a ten-yard receiving touchdown. This was against the vaunted Bear defense. Marion Barber III now has 254 rushing yards, 45 receiving yards and five touchdowns in three games. That is very impressive.
RB Ronnie Brown, MIA - Brown, coming into week three, had only had 22 carries for 65 yards and eight catches for 76 yards. This week against the New York Jets, the former Auburn Tiger rushed 23 times for 112 yards and caught six passes for 99 yards and three total touchdowns against the Dolphins. Brown's strong play kept Jesse Chatman on the bench until the late in the second quarter. Coach Cameron was quoted this past week that he wanted to run the ball more after the Dolphins ranked dead last in rushing through the first two weeks of the season. He got his wish on Sunday. The Dolphin running game, Brown in particular, looked very good. He showed glimpses of why the Dolphins chose him in the 2005 NFL Draft.
RB Najeh Davenport, PIT -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Davenport is the clear backup to Willie Parker, and he punctuated that role with a 39 yard touchdown run late in the game to seal the victory in Week 3 over the 49ers. That scoring run boosted his numbers for the day (5-47-1), but each Parker owner should consider having Davenport insurance on their bench.
RB Reuben Droughns, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Despite his lack of a pre-defined role in the Giants' offense and ground attack, Reuben Droughns kept a positive attitude and was richly rewarded in Week 3. Droughns scored both rushing touchdowns for New York, putting up a Jerome Bettis-like stat line of three carries for three yards and two scores.
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - Foster was the reason why Carolina beat Atlanta. He had 20 carries for 122 yards, 1 TD and 1 reception for 13 yards, 1 TD. Foster took the game over after Jake Delhomme left the game at the end of the third quarter with an injured elbow. He rushed for 40 plus yards when the team needed to run off the clock and control the game. This was Foster's first 20-carry game of the season. He had only four last year. Carolina's next three games are vs. TB, @NO and @ARI.
RB Samkon Gado, HOU - Gado may see an increase in playing time if Ahman Green has to miss any games with an injured knee and Dayne can't come back from his bruised ribs. Green, who was listed as probable with a knee injury, apparently reaggravated it on his first carry of the game. The Texans running game was fairly obsolete the entire game with Gado leading all Texans with just 6 carries for 12 yards. He did score a 1-yard TD late in the game. Keep an eye on Ahman Green's knee injury as Gado would likely be the main benefactor if Green misses any time. Houston's next three games are @ATL, MIA, @JAC.
RB Earnest Graham, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Graham had 8 carries for 75 yards and 2 TDs. He came into the game and replaced Cadillac Williams who fumbled on a play that appeared to reaggravate his rib injury from week one. The Buccaneers had three rushing TDs on the day and Graham's performance, although impressive was mainly due to his presence in the backfield against a Rams run defense that was leaking strength as the game went on. It looks like Graham, not Michael Pittman is the backup to Cadillac Williams though, so make a note of that. If Williams isn't 100% it's pretty clear that Jon Gruden and the Bucs can count on good production from Earnest Graham if he is needed. The Buccaneers next three games are @CAR, @IND, TEN.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Jones returned to active duty against the Eagles, rushing three times for just five yards. He did find his way into the end zone on one of those touches, so he is ready for goal line duties again. Jones added a single catch for 16 yards. Look for more production in weeks to come, but Week 4 vs. Chicago will be a tough test.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Jones had 38 carries for 109 yards and 3 catches for 26 yards against two formidable defenses in the first two weeks of the season. In week three against the Miami Dolphins, Jones rushed 25 times for 110 yards and added a couple receptions for one yard. The former Chicago Bear looked strong and explosive like when he was in Chicago. Jones and the Jets get the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants the next two games which should be very good matchups. Look for Jones to be the workhorse for the Jet offense going forward.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK - He's been on this list each week, but he continues to surpass expectations. He is looking like the 2005 version of himself, making people forget about 2006. He has 471 yards from scrimmage in three games.
RB Brian Leonard, STL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Steven Jackson suffered a groin injury and will sit in week four. Leonard will get the start. While we be more excited about him if the Rams' offense was preforming well, he is still a starting RB (for one week at least).
RB Marshawn Lynch, BUF - Marshawn Lynch has looked good so far in this short season. The rookie from Cal had 20 carries for 74 yards and a strong run for a score against the mighty Patriot defense. He added two catches for six yards. Lynch will be relied on even more with the injury to J.P. Losman. On the season, he has carried the ball 57 times for 228 yards (4.0 ypc average) and a pair of touchdowns. His versatility has been shown with five receptions for 36 yards. Lynch has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners. The rumored running back committee has been non-existent.
RB Willis McGahee, BAL - While it is difficult to upgrade McGahee much more, his proximity to 100 yards rushing and his workload (21 carries, 98 yards) should be mentioned. He is most definitely a feature back for Baltimore, and further his receiving ability (four receptions for 23 yards) adds another valuable dimension. McGahee is a good RB starter until further notice and must be in your lineup as the Ravens face Cleveland in Week 4.
RB Sammy Morris, NE - Morris is upgraded again after having another good game against the Buffalo Bills. He had what is now looking to be just another day at the office with 12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. Throughout the first three games of the season, the former Dolphin has enjoyed games with 54,51, and 46 rushing yards while getting 10-12 carries per game. After being used in this manner for three games, this looks to be the pattern. The 30 year old from Texas Tech is really asserting himself into fantasy viability. For fantasy teams that need a spot starter to cover bye weeks or injuries, Sammy Morris is a good option.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Peterson is about the only offense for the Minnesota Vikings. It seems as though he is really solidifying his role on the team. In the first two games, Peterson had 39 carries for 169 rushing yards adding five catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. In week three against the Kansas City Chiefs, the former Sooner carried the ball 25 times for 102 yards and one touchdown and caught three passes for 48 yards. Peterson looks like the real deal. He is already a top back in the NFL. The only thing he has yet to prove is the ability to stay healthy for sixteen games with a heavy workload.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - Portis asserted himself as the clear starter for the Redskins with his solid game against the Giants in Week 3. Portis ran for 60 yards on 14 carries, including a touchdown. He also added six receptions for 37 yards, which is more noteworthy because his competition (Ladell Betts) was considered to be the better receiver. With Portis holding both roles, look for him to be the feature backfield option in Washington.
RB Musa Smith, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - While Willis McGahee has become the true featured back in Baltimore, his production level makes it worth having his capable understudy. Smith had 47 total yards and three catches on eight chances in Week 3 against Arizona. If McGahee stumbles, Musa Smith could grab a large chunk of McGahee's production.
RB Derrick Ward, NYG - Ward had 120 total yards rushing and receiving in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins. Ward ran hard and pushed piles forward, picking up several yards at a time. Ward had 26 carries for 94 yards to go with his 26 yards on six catches. The only issue that Ward owners could have with his performance was the lack of touchdowns. Both rushing scores went to veteran RB Reuben Droughns from inside the Redskin five yard line.
RB Kenny Watson, CIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rudi Johnson lost time in Week 3 with a hamstring injury, so Kenny Watson got to fill the void. Watson did a good job as the primary back, rushing nine times for 60 yards and a touchdown. He has established himself as not just the #2 RB for the Bengals but also as a solid option to give Rudi Johnson a break. Watson is worth having, especially for fantasy owners who own Rudi Johnson.
RB Brian Westbrook, PHI - Westbrook came into the game with a "questionable" label, but there was nothing in his performance nor his style of play that showed any evidence of a knee injury. Westbrook took on tacklers and broke several of them, gaining chunks of yardage after initial contact. He scored three times -- in the first half -- as he gained a nearly symmetrical 110 yards rushing and 111 more receiving. Westbrook had just 19 touches in the game (14 carries, 5 receptions) but racked up the fantasy points along with yardage at a rate of over 11 yards every time he had the ball. One particular thing to note is that he got hit hard in the ribs in the second half and is already labeled as questionable for Week 4, but Westbrook has already stated that he will be fine. With a bye looming in Week 5, Westy should be an excellent start against the Giants.
Downgrade
RB Mike Anderson, BAL - The former #2 RB option in Baltimore has fallen behind Musa Smith. Barring two major injuries, Anderson has next to no value in fantasy leagues.
RB Tatum Bell, DET - With the return of Kevin Jones to health, Bell will be seeing less opportunity to produce. While he may contribute in the next few weeks, once Jones shows that he can give 100% again Bell will be back to #2 on the depth charts.
RB Ladell Betts, WAS - With Clinton Portis amassing 97 total yards and also collecting six catches, there was little left over for Betts. He had seven carries but just nine yards rushing, to which he added just a single 13-yard catch. Betts is now solidly behind Portis on the depth chart and has much less value for fantasy purposes unless Portis struggles.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Chatman had no touches in week three against the New York Jets. Chatman was coming off of a strong performance last week on seven touches. Ronnie Brown's strong performance likely put some distance between he and Chatman. Brown started off so hot that it was late in the second quarter before Chatman entered the game.
RB Ahman Green, HOU - Green did very little in the game before leaving with a knee injury in the second quarter. He did appear to be injured on the first offensive play of the day, but came back in to play one additional quarter. He finished with 5 yards on 4 carries. If Green has to miss time, it's looking more and more like Samkon Gado is his replacement. Houston's next three games are @ATL, MIA, @JAC.
RB Steven Jackson, STL - Jackson will miss week four with an injured groin. He is not expected to miss an extended amount of time, but the downgrade is still warranted.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson ran hard again on Sunday, dragging tacklers with him before going down on many of his rushes, but had very little room to run. He finished with just 42 yards on 24 carries, and he lost five yards on his only reception of the day. His best run of the day, which would have gone for 28 yards, was called back on a holding penalty. His next two games are against the Chargers and Jaguars.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - Johnson lost significant time in Week 3 due to an injury. He was sidelined with a hamstring issue, and as a result he only had nine yards rushing (despite an exorbitant 17 carries) coupled with a 33 yard catch. Keep an eye on Johnson's health this week, but with New England up next followed by the Bengals' bye in Week 5 it may be best for the Bengals to have Rudi rest for two weeks.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Jones is getting a decent number of carries each week but is being overshadowed by backfield mate, Marion Barber. Barber is getting most of the goal line touches, as well as third down opportunities. In a hard fought game versus the stout Chicago Bear defense in week three, Jones had seven carries for 26 yards and 2 catches for 29 yards. This brings Jones' season totals to 38 carries for 124 yards and 4 receptions for 64 yards and no touchdowns. His fantasy owners cannot be happy. Jones is considered the starting back in Dallas but all who watch the games agree that Barber is playing much better.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - This is his third consecutive week getting a downgrade. He had 15 carries for 37 yards with 2 receptions for 18 yards. He is just not producing in the same manner that he did last year, but more importantly, the team isn't showcasing his talents like they did last year. Fred Taylor is very much healthy and he's currently getting more carries than Jones-Drew. I think it's safe to say that Jones-Drew won't be a major factor unless an injury or drop in production from Fred Taylor presents itself. Jacksonville's next three games are BYE, @KC, HOU.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney had his best game of the season in week three versus the Buffalo Bills. He even had over 100 rushing yards. But, Maroney yields to Sammy Morris for the goal line carries and he gets no receptions. In the game, the former Minnesota Gopher had 19 carries for 103 rushing yards. This gives him a total of 54 carries for 252 rushing yards and no touchdowns or receptions. It was good to see him get 19 carries and rush for over 100 yards. This will definitely be a situation to monitor as the season progresses.
RB Cadillac Williams, TB - There are a couple of issues here. First, we're growing weary of Williams constantly being dinged by something. Whether it's his ribs or his foot or his back or his whatever, it seems like the man can't last an entire game intact. Also, there is the play of Earnest Graham and Michael Pittman. That duo salted the game away in week three and played well. While Williams will remain the starter, HC Jon Gruden likes using Pittman and has vowed to get "Graham more involved." We're looking at a full blown committee in Tampa Bay.
Holding steady
RB Joseph Addai, IND - Addai had 22 carries for 72 yards with 2 TD and 3 receptions for 19 yards. Although Addai did not have a big yardage game, he scored two TDs and helped control the clock late in the game. Indianapolis' next three games are at home vs. DEN, vs. TB and BYE.
RB Cedric Benson, CHI - Benson is finding room to run difficult. The lack of a passing game is not helping his cause any at all. He finally got into the endzone in week three against the improved Dallas Cowboy defense. The former Longhorn finished the game with 16 carries for 46 yards and a score. He added one catch for eight yards. Benson did have a costly fumble in the game. On the season, the third-year pro has accumulated 189 rushing yards on 59 carries with one touchdown and two fumbles. He has added three receptions for 28 yards. The entire Bear offense looks shaky and this definitely is a situation to monitor. Rex Grossman is imploding and the receivers do not look great. Benson detractors would say he has gone down on the first contact way too often and has not made enough plays.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Berrian is the primary target for Rex Grossman. The former Gator quarterback looks to Berrian when he needs a big play. In the first two games of the season, the four-year pro from Fresno State had accounted for 10 receptions and 148 receiving yards. Berrian had a good game on Sunday night, even after a drop late in the second quarter that would have been for a score. He also had a couple other drops where the Bears really could have used the reception from their top receiver. Berrian finished the week three game against the Cowboys with six catches for 73 receiving yards. He has a three-week total of 16 receptions for 221 receiving yards and no scores.
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe had seven targets yesterday, all of which came in the second half. He finished with 5 catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. The TD came on a jump ball in the end zone, which Bowe wrestled away from the defender. Bowe is steadily earning the trust of QB Damon Huard, and his role in the offense should continue to grow.
WR Nate Burleson, SEA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Burleson played well in D.J. Hackett's absence, leading the Seahawks in targets (12) and hauling in six catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. He had a shot at another touchdown, but lost control of the ball at the back of the endzone as he was trying to bring it. Hasselbeck showed in confidence in Burleson, finding him for the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute left.
WR Kevin Curtis, PHI - The Eagles thought that they brought in a good deep threat this offseason when they added Curtis, but his Week 3 performance was beyond their wildest dreams. Curtis had three touchdowns, all before halftime, and ended the game against Detroit with 11 receptions and 221 yards. He was wide open on a number of chances and Donovan McNabb was happy to throw to him as often as possible. Curtis is unlikely to continue at that kind of level, but he was the most targeted Eagle in Week 3 and now has shown that he can be the main target in a prolific pass offense.
WR Andre Davis, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Davis turned in a nice game (four catches for 70 yards) in place of the injured Andre Johnson and the injured Jacoby Jones. Johnson is uncertain for week four and Jones is definitely out, so there is an opportunity for Davis to excel against a suspect Falcons' defense. However, Davis is also ailing with a dislocated finger. You'll obviously want to be certain that he'll play this weekend before going out and grabbing him off the waiver wire.
WR Donald Driver, GB - Driver had six receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown in week three against the stout San Diego Chargers. He has looked great this season and benefits from both James Jones and Jennings getting healthy and back in the lineup. Throughout the first three weeks of the season, Driver has totaled 20 receptions for 265 receiving yards and two scores. The veteran from Alcorn State has enjoyed a strong, long-lasting rapport with quarterback, Brett Favre and the Mississippi native looks to Driver when he needs a clutch catch.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards produced once again, reeling in 83 yards and a score as he locked down the #1 WR role for the Browns. He has become a must start for fantasy purposes despite the uncertainty at QB for Cleveland.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Cincinnati will lead the league in passing yards. While you likely won't be able to pry Chad Johnson away from his owner, Houshmandzadeh could end the year with similar numbers and might be attainable via trade.
WR Vincent Jackson, SD - Jackson was targeted seven times, and ended up with six catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. His 27-yard touchdown reception was made with outstretched arms in tight coverage, and he made another diving catch in the fourth quarter as well. As opposing defenses continue to concentrate on the middle of the field to stop Tomlinson and Gates, Jackson should see plenty of single coverage on the outside.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Jennings is finally back on the field, so he gets the obvious upgrade. However, the presence of James Jones tempers our enthusiasm a bit.
WR Brandon Marshall, DEN - Marshall is coming into his own as an NFL wide receiver. He has excellent size and athleticism, and is a strong runner after the catch. He had 7 catches for 133 yards on Sunday, leading the team with 12 targets. His ability to make plays will ensure that he continues to play a major role in the offense going forward.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - Mason has recaptured his role as the top receiver for both Steve McNair and the Baltimore Ravens. Mason had eight catches for 79 yards and a touchdown against Arizona in Week 3, and as long as Mason continues to put up such solid numbers he will remain the favorite target.
WR Shaun McDonald, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The first two weeks of the 2007 were not a fluke -- Shaun McDonald is a big part of the Detroit passing game. He had another big game, catching five balls for 76 yards and a touchdown on nine targets. That is the third game with seven or more chances, and 19 in the last two weeks. McDonald has appeared to pass Mike Furrey as the third most likely target for Jon Kitna, and if Calvin Johnson loses time he could be on the field and getting targets even more.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Randy Moss has looked like the Randy Moss of old. The Patriot offense, and Tom Brady, seems to suit him just fine. Against the Buffalo Bills, Moss tallied 5 receptions for 122 yards and a pair of scores. On the season, the former Marshall star has 22 catches for 403 yards and five touchdowns. He has had seven of those receptions go for more than twenty yards. He is Tom Brady's primary receiver.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - Owens has looked unstoppable this season. Even after the injury to Terry Glenn, and no real threat at receiver, Owens has put up huge numbers. He has a three-week total of 16 catches for 329 yards and three touchdowns in the three games. His week three game against the very tough Bear defense was very good as well. Owens had eight catches for 145 receiving yards and looked to be the only wideout Romo targeted when he needed a big play.
WR Troy Walters, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Why are we talking about the fifth WR on the depth chart for Detroit? Well, for one thing it is Detroit, who never met a down that wasn't a passing opportunity. Secondly, Calvin Johnson was injured in Week 3, and once he could not continue Troy Walters was used in four WR sets, a formation that Detroit likes to use often. Walters had two targets (one 13-yard catch) and also ran back kicks, so he could be a sneaky value play and waiver wire pickup in deep leagues.
WR Roddy White, ATL - While he's gone in most leagues, we have a possible waiver wire player here. We upgraded White last week and he continued to impress this week with 7 receptions for 127 yards and 1 TD. His TD catch went for 69 yards that started off as a quick slant move. He broke a tackle and was off to the end zone. Atlanta used a lot of three and four WR sets all game long and White, in addition to Michael Jenkins and Alge Crumpler, capitalized on the passes thrown their way. Atlanta's next three games are HOU, @TEN, NYG.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Left for dead in week one (he wasn't even active), Reggie Williams now has TD catches in back-to-back games.
WR Roy Williams, DET - Roy Williams is obviously a top WR, but if Calvin Johnson misses any time, Williams' value will skyrocket.
Downgrade
WR Jason Avant, PHI - Avant came into Week 3 as the only Philadelphia Eagle to score a touchdown, but that quickly changed against Detroit. Avant was barely utilized and had just one nine-yard catch late in the contest. After being a sexy waiver wire guy after Week 2, Avant has been reduced back to the fourth favorite target at best for Donovan McNabb.
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Once upon a time, Reggie Brown was viewed as the next feature WR for the Eagles. That just has not materialized, and even when Brown is targeted there is either a drop or a lack of separation from the defense that goes along with the pass attempt. Week 3 was not much different, as Brown had two catches for 23 yards on two targets against the Lions. Brown is not a "go to" WR for the Eagles, and should not be considered as a must start fantasy WR every week.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton has been disappointing since getting the starting nod after the Terry Glenn knee injury and surgery. The former college quarterback had a bad drop that would have been a score just before halftime. Crayton did finish the week three game against the Chicago Bears with three catches for 27 yards. He has disappointed since being named the starter. Crayton is battling a finger injury from week two, but is not performing to a level where his fantasy owners can depend on him. Crayton was shutout in week two, and six receptions in three games is not much for a starting receiver on a team that throws as much as the Cowboys.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Evans needs another downgrade after his 1 catch for 7 yards performance this week. Evans only had four targets. With the rookie, Trent Edwards, at quarterback there is little chance of Evans emerging any time soon. Evans has a total of five catches for 29 yards on the season. The former Wisconsin Badger has been a big disappointment this year. Something drastic needs to happen for him to become viable for most fantasy leagues.
WR Glenn Holt, CIN - Where did he go?
WR Calvin Johnson, DET - Johnson has been a huge producer as a rookie, but the reasoning here for the downgrade is the possibility of lost action. Johnson leaped for a ball in Week 3 and snared it near the sideline but fell hard on his back. He appeared to jam his back and right now it is considered to be a bruise, but time will tell if he cannot play in a game or two. Barring severe injury, Johnson should miss no more than the next two weeks as Week 6 is Detroit's bye.
WR Jacoby Jones, HOU - Jones had the chance to make a big impression with Andre Johnson out of the lineup, but he finished the game with only 3 receptions for 26 yards before separating his shoulder. Andre Davis stepped up to the task and had a slightly more impressive game with 4 receptions for 70 yards. Jones will likely miss two to three weeks.
WR Matt Jones, JAX - Inactive in week, Jones' stock is at rock-bottom.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Smith had a very quiet game with only 1 reception for 6 yards and 1 rush for 10 yards, but let's not go benching him next week. He was in a battle, both physically and verbally with Falcons cover man DeAngelo Hall the entire game. The climax of the feud occurred when Smith had clearly beaten Hall for a long pass, but Hall decided to tackle Smith before the ball got to his hands, because he knew he was beaten. Was that a good play or a dirty move? Either way that drive resulted in a Panthers TD mainly due to Hall's three penalties, the pass interference call and two other 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Smith did leave the game for one series, but he later returned. He should be fine for next week's home game vs. Tampa Bay, but temper your expectations. If David Carr starts for the injured Delhomme, Smith may not be as productive as he would be with Delhomme at QB. Carr is not as familiar with specific plays designed for Smith, which could result in less production. Carolina's next three games are TB, @NO, @ARI.
WR Javon Walker, DEN - Brandon Marshall's gain is, in part, Javon Walker's loss. While Walker should still be considered the WR1 on the Broncos, Jay Cutler has the luxury of throwing to whichever WR is getting open in a particular week instead of force-feeding Walker. In some weeks, Marshall will get the majority of the targets, as he did yesterday (11 targets to Walker's three).
Holding steady
WR Mark Clayton, BAL - Clayton returned to action and produced in the Ravens' offense with five catches for 34 yards. Clayton is not quite back to his perceived role as the top target in the Baltimore passing game, but should he continue to work himself in he should have solid value going forward.
WR James Jones, GB - Jones is getting more comfortable in this offense, and Brett Favre is playing very well. However, we have to hedge a bit on Jones with the return of Greg Jennings.
WR Hines Ward, PIT - Ward had just three targets against San Francisco, catching a short two yard pass and adding a seven yard carry to his paltry numbers. Ward had to leave the game early in the second half with a bruised thigh, but he should be good to go next week. Hang tight with Ward as he should produce better numbers going forward.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - Daniels had 7 receptions on 7 targets for 56 yards against the Colts. He led all Texans in receptions, which was expected with Andre Johnson out for this game and maybe more. We upgraded Daniels last week due to Johnson's injury and he didn't disappoint. He came up just short of a TD reception late in the game that resulted in a Samkon Gado 1-yard TD plunge. He was open in the middle of the field all game long and QB Matt Schaub was accurate in getting him the ball. Daniels should enjoy another strong game next week @ATL. The Texans next three games are @ATL, MIA, @JAC.
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC - Gonzalez got off to a slow start in the first two weeks, but returned to form on Sunday, catching 7 passes for 96 yards on 9 targets. The two incompletions intended for Gonzalez were both thrown deep (one in the end zone).
TE Jeff King, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - We upgraded Jeff King last week and this week against Atlanta, he didn't let us down. King had 4 receptions for 56 yards and 1 TD. The Panthers increase in offensive looks to the TE this year is directly related to new Offensive Coordinator Jeff Davidson. We think King will continue to play a role in the Panthers offense and is worth a waiver wire pick up if you are looking for help in the TE department. Carolina's next three games are TB, @NO, @ARI.
TE Donald Lee, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Donald Lee is upgraded again. He benefits from quarterback Brett Favre having so many pass attempts every game. Lee had four receptions for 44 receiving yards against the very good San Diego Charger defense. He almost had a score for the second straight week. The five-year pro from Mississippi State has caught four passes in all three Packer games. Lee makes for a decent spot starter at tight end and could have a very good season.
TE Marcedes Lewis, JAX - Lewis had 3 receptions for 44 yards this week at Denver. It's nothing too flashy, but this was his third game in a row with at least 35 yards receiving. Keep an eye on him and consider him a possible waiver wire addition if you're in need of help from the TE position.
TE Heath Miller, PIT - Miller was the leading receiver for the Steelers on a day where they weren't doing so well via the passing game. Miller had four receptions for 82 yards and also snared his other target for 16 more yards at the 49er 2-yard line but the catch was challenged and reversed. Should Hines Ward lose any time, Miller's workload would only increase.
TE Greg Olsen, CHI - Olsen is upgraded due to finally making it on the field from injury. He had a good catch almost scoring in the third quarter. Olsen ended up with two catches for 28 receiving yards. The rookie should start to get more playing time now that he is healthy. Tight end is a tough position for a rookie to stand out, but this is a situation to monitor.
TE Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Shiancoe is upgraded after a good showing in week three against the Kansas City Chiefs. After getting 2 catches for 18 yards in the season opener and being shutout in game two, Visanthe Shiancoe caught three passes for 51 yards Sunday. Coach Brad Childress was quoted this past week saying he planned to get Shiancoe more involved in the passing game and he did just that. Shiancoe almost had a score on a halfback pass from Mewelde Moore.
TE Ben Watson, NE - Watson has been very efficient with his pass receptions so far in 2007. The additions of Randy Moss and Wes Welker would seem to limit Watson's potential somewhat. But, for three straight weeks, Watson has caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady. He has done so with only 9 receptions on the year. In week three against the Buffalo Bills, the former Georgia Bulldog had two catches for 17 yards and a score. The four-year veteran does have a good rapport with Brady and should remain a strong redzone threat.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow put up solid numbers again in Week 3, snagging six catches for 88 yards against Oakland. He continues to validate his Top 5 status and remains there until further notice as an elite and must start fantasy TE.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten looked very good in week three versus the Chicago Bears. Through the first two weeks, the former Tennessee Volunteer had 8 catches for 143 receiving yards and a score. Against the 2006 NFC Champion, the Chicago Bears, Witten had six catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. He looks to be the primary beneficiary from the Terry Glenn injury.
Downgrade
TE Marcus Pollard, SEA - Hasselbeck spread the ball around to his wide receivers on Sunday, but the tight end position was mostly an afterthought. Pollard had only two targets.
TE L.J. Smith, PHI - Smith underwent surgery Friday to clean out scar tissue surrounding his injured groin. Smith has been ruled out for Sunday's game and is listed as week-to-week.
Holding steady
TE Alge Crumpler, ATL - Yes, Crumpler had 6 receptions for 63 yards and a TD against Carolina, but Joey Harrington and the Falcons offense took advantage of a porous Carolina defense. Alge Crumpler is supposed to have games like this. The question is, will these kind of games become consistent out of Harrington and the Atlanta offense? There's only been three games, which gives us a small sample size to work with so we'll play the wait and see approach. We don't expect Atlanta and Harrington to have such a wide open offense all season. Consider this a tease for right now, but keep an eye open for repeat performances vs. better defenses. Atlanta's next three games are HOU, @TEN, NYG.
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Davis led the 49ers in targets (8) and was the focal point of the offense in the first half on Sunday, but the team's passing offense is still suspect. Davis sprained his knee on the opening drive of the second half and did not return.
TE John Madsen, OAK - Madsen ended up with 61 yards receiving on Sunday, but that won't happen often. Zach Miller is still the starter, and Madsen had only three targets. He made the most of them, but he is not likely to be involved enough in the offense each week to have fantasy value.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Matt Stover, BAL - Another game winning field goal for the rock steady Matt Stover. Stover scored 14 points including four FGs from 21, 28, 43 and finally 46 yards. You can do much worse than having Matt Stover on your fantasy roster.
Downgrade
PK Nate Kaeding, SD - The Chargers' offense is still not firing on all cylinders, and Kaeding is getting fewer scoring opportunities as a result.

Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Tampa Bay Buccaneers, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Surprisingly, the unit is playing great. In week three, they allowed just 3 points and 245 total yards. For the season, they have allowed only 37 total points. If your league awards points for points allowed, this would be a nice defense to have.
TD Indianapolis Colts, IND - The Colts had three sacks, two INTs and three FFs in the game against Houston. Plus, they are absolutely shutting down the run. We upgraded this unit after week one, and it's clear that they are still a good fantasy defense to have.
TD Dallas Cowboys, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Dallas Cowboy defense has played well the last two games after giving up huge production to Eli Manning and the Giants in week one. The Cowboys benefited from getting Newman back in week three. Also, the Dallas defenders are still learning and adjusting to the Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense and should improve as the season progresses. But, the Cowboy defense looks quick and really hawks the ball. Anthony Henry had a big game with two picks, scoring on the latter of the two. Cedric Benson was held in check on the evening as well. The Cowboys finished the game with three interceptions, a fumble recovery and three sacks.
TD Philadelphia Eagles, PHI - The Eagles had nine sacks in week three.....sure it was against Detroit, but nine sacks is an auto-upgrade. They are obviously the league leaders in sacks for the season (with 14).
TD New England Patriots, NE - The New England Patriot defense has looked very sharp so far in 2007, even without Harrison and Seymour. They are expected back soon. So far, the Patriots are a top rush defense holding teams to an average of 37 yards rushing, 2.87 yards per rushing attempt, and no rushing scores. The passing defense has been strong as well. The Patriots' opponents are averaging a mere 161 passing yards and 1.33 passing touchdowns per game. Giving up less than 200 total yards a game is incredible. In week three against the Bills, the Patriots gave up 101 passing yards, no scores and one interception. On the ground, they yielded 110 rushing yards. Patriot defenders also had a fumble recovery and two sacks.
Downgrade
TD New York Jets, NYJ - Yikes. The Jets allowed 424 yards and 24 points to Miami. That is completely unacceptable. For the season, they have been torched for 1158 yards and 86 points. To make matters worse, they have recorded only one sack and have forced only one turnover.
TD Detroit Lions, DET - The Lions gave up 536 yards and 56 points to a QB that had no timing a week before....what a train wreck. While they are getting decent turnover and sack numbers, you can't afford to chance a start in leagues that deduct points for yards and points allowed.
TD Carolina Panthers, CAR - The Panthers had just one sack and one forced fumble, not to mention they gave up 361 yards passing to Joey Harrington. The Falcons entered the game being sacked a league high 13 times. For Carolina not to get more than just one sack on 44 pass attempts says something. It says this defense is not as good years past. Look elsewhere for your Defense/ST.
