Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Derek Anderson, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - So do you think this might have been how the conversation went? "Romeo, how do I keep the starting job?" to which HC Crennel said "Go out and throw 5 TDs and we'll talk...". Anderson did his part to keep the title of starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, and with it the talk of when Brady Quinn will get his on the job training has dried up, at least for now. Be warned that he looked bad at times and made some poor throws but the numbers speak for themselves. Cleveland looks to have found a legit starting QB at least for a while.
QB Kyle Boller, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Boller is back starting for the Ravens once again, but this could be a short stay. Normal starter Steve McNair was unable to answer the call for Week 2, so enter Boller, who put up solid numbers (23-35-182-2-0) and utilized his favorite target in TE Todd Heap. Should McNair falter once again (and there is talk he'll sit out week three as well), Boller has proven to be a very capable replacement.
QB Tom Brady, NE - There is no denying Tom Brady is a great QB. But, adding three new weapons, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Donte Stallworth, he looks unstoppable even against good defenses. After compiling almost 300 yards and 3 scores in week one against the Jets, Brady had another great game against the very good San Diego Charger defense. In week two, Brady had 31 passing attempts, converting 25 for completions. He totaled 279 passing yards, three scores and one interception. He and Randy Moss look like they are very much in sync. Brady also had one carry for two yards.
QB Marc Bulger, STL - The play-calling in St. Louis so far is reminiscent of the Mike Martz era. In part because the running game has been ineffective, Bulger has attempted 83 passes through the first two games. He was efficient on Sunday, completing 24 of 41 passes for 368 yards and a touchdown (no interceptions). Bulger has a tough matchup this week against the Buccaneers, but then has a couple more favorable matchups against the Cowboys and Cardinals.
QB Kellen Clemens, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kellen Clemens is upgraded for the 2nd week in row. Even though Chad Pennington warmed up, Clemens started and played admirably against a great Raven defense. He finished with 19 completions in 37 attempts and 260 passing yards. Clemens added a short touchdown to his tight end, Chris Baker along with 2 interceptions. This was Clemens' first career start. He had a strong 4th quarter making the game close and his performance could spark a quarterback controversy.
QB Daunte Culpepper, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Culpepper should get his turn under center soon. JaMarcus Russell isn't ready yet, and Josh McCown looked like Andrew Walter on Sunday. Culpepper looked generally efficient during the preseason, apparently recovered from the knee injury that sidelined him for most of the past two seasons. The Raiders schedule in the coming weeks, however, is difficult: they face the Jaguars, Colts, Chargers, a bye, and the Steelers.
QB Jake Delhomme, CAR - Delhomme after two games is averaging three TD passes per game. This past week he had a 300-yard passing game. He has a favorable schedule coming up: @ATL, TB, @NO. If you have Delhomme reserved on your QB bench, you may want to consider starting him while he's hot. Delhomme is currently ranked as the 4th best fantasy QB with 51 fantasy points. He is one point behind Tom Brady for 3rd among QBs.
QB David Garrard, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - He's doing a great job of leading the team, despite just recently being handed over the reins. He's averaging almost 240 passing yards per game and keep in mind, he'll gain you some rushing yards as well. He's currently QB11 in fantasy rankings. Despite the good start, he has a tough game next week at Denver. Next three games includes (@DEN, BYE, @KC).
QB Eli Manning, NYG - Contrary to all the news this week, Manning looked fine and started Week 2 against Green Bay. He came out throwing and hit Plaxico Burress for another TD in the second quarter. Manning finished with respectable numbers (16-29-211-1-1) before leaving the game in the final period once the outcome was decided.
QB Matt Schaub, HOU - Schaub has three TD passes in two games so far this season. He has outperformed where we thought he would be after week two. Next week may be a struggle against the Colts with a less than 100% Andre Johnson or no Andre Johnson at all. His next three games are IND, @ATL, MIA.
Downgrade
QB Drew Brees, NO - This is the second week in a row where Brees has struggled to consistently move the ball. Although he had 260 yards and a TD pass to Marques Colston, he only had 61 yards at the half. He has 3 INT and only 1 TD pass so far this year. If you have better options, you may want to consider benching Brees until he turns it around. Right now, his struggles are mainly a result of quick defensive pressure that doesn't allow him time to throw accurately down field. His next three games are TEN, BYE, CAR.
QB Rex Grossman, CHI - Many thought Rex Grossman would bounce back this week against the porous Kansas Chief pass defense. But, he disappointed, especially in the second half of the game. Grossman had over 100 passing yards and a touchdown at half time with no interceptions. But, he finished with 20 pass completions on 34 attempts for 160 passing yards, 1 score and 2interceptions. This was supposed to an easy week against the Chiefs after playing against the Sad Diego Chargers in the opener.
QB Tarvaris Jackson, MIN - Second year pro, Tarvaris Jackson, had a horrible game. We all knew this year would be chock full of ups and downs for the young quarterback. But, this week was especially poor. Jackson had 17 completions from 33 pass attempts for 166 yards and 4 interceptions and no touchdowns. Also, the Vikings medical staff was looking at Jackson's groin in overtime. This situation needs monitoring. Tarvaris will get more chances because the Vikings do not have other viable options at quarterback.
QB Jared Lorenzen, NYG - With Eli Manning seemingly good to go and starting in Week 2, the quarterback slides back down the value chart. Compounding the downgrade is news that he may have been injured in the waning minutes of the Green Bay contest while mopping up for Manning, hurting his ankle while being sacked.
QB J.P. Losman, BUF - J.P. Losman is downgraded for the 2nd week in a row. Many had the young quarterback as a sleeper for 2007. So, far, he has not impressed. Last week, Losman had 97 passing yards. This week, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Losman had 25 passing attempts, yielding 15 completions for 154 passing yards. Defenses are taking away Lee Evans and making Losman and the other receivers beat them and it is working. Losman will have to prove he can make utilize the other wideouts effectively to loosen things up for Evans. Until that happens, look for more ugly games.
QB Josh McCown, OAK - The finger may have been bothering him on Sunday, but he looked awful completing just 8 of 16 passes for 73 yards (no touchdowns, three interceptions). McCown showed poor accuracy and clock management on Sunday. With both Daunte Culpepper and JaMarcus Russell waiting in the wings, McCown is a big underdog to finish the season as the starter.
QB Steve McNair, BAL - Unable to start for the Ravens in Week 2 and after Kyle Boller put up a good effort against the New York Jets, McNair would best serve his interests to get back in the saddle sooner rather than later. Boller showed that he can do the job when asked, so McNair needs to get healthy quick before they start posing that question for Week 3 and beyond.
QB Chad Pennington, NYJ - Chad Pennington warmed up before the game and wanted to play but Clemens got the start. The team is saying his ankle wasn't ready but there are rumblings that the Jets wanted to see what they had in Clemens. He has been told that the starting quarterback job is his when he recovers, but the play of Kellen Clemens will make things difficult. This is definitely a situation to monitor closely.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - While Rivers generally had an excellent first season as a starter last year, he did have a five-game stretch toward the end of the season when he looked a bit off -- which is how he's looked in each of the first two games this year. Part of that is because of the tough matchups he's faced (versus Chicago and New England), and we do expect him to break out of his funk -- but look for someone else to start until he does.
QB Alex Smith, SF - The Forty-Niners threw the ball only 17 times on Sunday, and for the second week in a row, Alex Smith had just 126 yards passing. The offense is heavily focused on the running game. In addition, Smith has a difficult schedule over the next three weeks, facing the Steelers, Seahawks, and Ravens.
Holding steady
QB Brett Favre, GB - Brett Favre bounced back from a rough game last week. In week two, against a porous Giants defense, Favre had 29 pass completions on 38 attempts for 286 yards. He was finally able to find the endzone for the first time this season. He had three passing scores and one interception. The aging quarterback is having a lot of passing attempts due to an inept running game led by rookie, Brandon Jackson. This is definitely a situation to monitor closely.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - The debate about who is the starter in Dallas' backfield may continue, but there should not be much doubt as to who is the more effective runner for the 2007 version of the Cowboys. Barber scored from two yards out in the second quarter and ran the ball with his usual hard style, picking up several yards after contact. He punctuated his 89 yard rushing day with a 40 yard second touchdown in the final quarter to close the game and make his claim for more chances to produce.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Jesse Chatman is upgraded for the 2nd straight week. Even though he was injured for most of the week, he only had 3carries and 4 receptions. But, Chatman made the most of the situation by gaining 27 yards on the ground and another 15 through the air. This situation is quickly becoming a running back committee with Chatman sharing the load with Ronnie Brown.
RB Ahman Green, HOU - Two consecutive 70+ yard rushing games, this week he added a TD to the resume. He still isn't getting a ton of carries (31 carries in two games), but he's been consistent so far. If Andre Johnson misses any time, Houston may rely a little bit more on the running game and Green will surely benefit. His next three games are IND, @ATL, MIA.
RB Travis Henry, DEN - Henry showed that week one's performance (23 carries for 139 yards) was no fluke, following it up with 26 carries for 128 yards against the Raiders on Sunday. Henry's running style is well-suited for Denver's zone-blocking scheme, and he is on his way to being a top fantasy RB this season. A word of caution, however: his schedule over the next five weeks is difficult, as he faces the Jaguars, Colts, Chargers, a bye, and the Steelers.
RB Edgerrin James, ARI - Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt is giving James a workload reminiscent of his early days in Indy. He's gotten fifty carries in two games, and he's turning his opportunities into production. The Arizona OL looks better than it has in a decade (although, granted, that isn't saying much). One note of caution, however: James faces the Ravens and Steelers over the next two weeks.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - Johnson usually does pretty well against the Browns, and Week 2 was no exception. While Johnson rushing for 118 yards in Cleveland is hardly worthy of an upgrade, the significant news is that he caught four passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. If Johnson becomes more of a receiving option in addition to his usual solid running games, Johnson is on the path to finishing 2007 as a Top 10 fantasy RB.
RB Kevin Jones, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kevin Jones is reportedly looking to return in time for next week's game. The Lions are 2-0 and could use their star running back. Tatum Bell has been largely ineffective and T.J. Duckett has an injured ankle. Jones has produced big fantasy numbers when healthy and could do so again in a couple of weeks. He will be slowly worked into the lineup and adds another dimension to an already potent Lion offense.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK - The Raiders' OL looks much more effective opening holes so far this year than it did last year. Through two games, Jordan is averaging 5.7 yards per carry, and is averaging over 100 rushing yards per game. He had 25 carries for 159 yards against the Broncos on Sunday. Jordon looked impressive finding the holes and finishing his runs strongly. He faces the Browns this week, so start him if you got him. (His schedule does get tougher after that, as he faces the Dolphins and Chargers in weeks four and five.)
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Two hundred yards rushing doesn't happen very often, but Lewis is no stranger to that number. He broke that barrier twice before as a Raven in 2005 (against the team he's currently on, no less), but questions about his abilities have swirled around Lewis since that season. Lewis showed excellent burst and speed through big holes for 216 yards in Week 2, including a 66 yard touchdown run in the third quarter and another 47 yard scamper in the fourth that set up a field goal. Lewis was productive all game and into the fourth quarter, showing he still has staying power for 60 minutes.
RB Sammy Morris, NE - Sammy Morris was brought to New England from Miami with teammate Wes Welker. The two former Texas Tech Red Raiders are underrated by fantasy owners, but are welcomed depth and talent on a talent-filled Patriot team. For the second week in a row, Morris tallied at least ten carries. Against a very good San Diego defense, Morris spelled Laurence Maroney with 10 carries for 51 rushing yards and a short touchdown. As the season progresses, the Patriots will rely on the running game even more. Sammy Morris might become a decent spot starter in deeper fantasy leagues.
RB Derrick Ward, NYG - Ward was a hot pickup coming into Week 2, and if you were fortunate enough to grab him you have to be encouraged by his performance against Green Bay. Ward filled Brandon Jacobs' role as feature back for the Giants with 15 carries for 90 yards and added four catches for another 35. Ward ran with determination and power, showing he could make good progress after first contact. If he is still available on your waiver wire, go out and add him to your roster immediately.
RB LenDale White, TEN - The Titans RBBC show might go up and down all season. Slight upgrade due to LenDale's better week two, but not nearly as impressive as Chris Brown's 175-yard week one. This is just to remind you that he will get goal line carries for Tennessee not to mention a 50/50 split of carries between he and Chris Brown. His next three games are @NO, BYE, ATL.
RB Cadillac Williams, TB - Williams had a strong game, despite only 61 yards rushing. Two rushing TDs, but more importantly, 24 carries. Not too bad for wearing a flak jacket to protect his ribs. His perseverance shows that he can play injured, but more importantly, Gruden and the Bucs leaned on him to perform, especially in the red zone and he didn't disappoint. His next three games are STL, @CAR, @IND.
RB DeShawn Wynn, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - DeShawn Wynn had a surprisingly good game. He was the Packer short yardage and goal line back. The former Gator finished with 10 carries for 50 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wynn added 2catches for 18 yards. His role on the Packers is uncertain going forward, but he looks to be gaining confidence. The rookie could see his carries increase if Brandon Jackson remains ineffective.
Downgrade
RB Tatum Bell, DET - Tatum Bell has not been effective as a Detroit Lion. He finished the game against the Minnesota Vikings with 9 carries for 14 yards and 4 catches for 25 receiving yards. To make things worse, Brian Calhoun saw action Sunday and was effective. Bell was seeing most of the touches with Kevin Jones and T.J. Duckett injured. But with Kevin Jones expected back next week, Bell's time in the spotlight looks to be waning. Jones will be worked in slowly, but Bell's window of opportunity seems to be closing ... and fast.
RB Chris Brown, TEN - Welcome back to earth. Brown may still have an impressive 2007 season, but the thoughts of him getting 150 yards rushing each week are now squashed. He'll continue to share carries with LenDale White, but we think Brown is the better back who may eventually take over as the primary ball carrier for Tennessee. His next three games are @NO, BYE, ATL.
RB Ronnie Brown, MIA - Ronnie Brown has been largely ineffective in 2007. The former Auburn Tiger had only 11 carries for 33 rushing yards and he added 2 catches for 36 yards. Brown looks to be fully entrenched in a running back committee with Jesse Chatman. It should be noted that Dolphin coach, Cam Cameron brought Chatman to Miami. Because of his ineffectiveness, Brown was on the sideline for most of the third and fourth quarters against the Cowboys. Brown could have capitalized on an injury to Chatman, but was outplayed.
RB Reuben Droughns, NYG - My how fast things change. Just this past summer, questions circled the Giants about how Droughns and Jacobs would share the Giants backfield. After Jacobs won the job, Droughns did the "team first" thing and took the backup role and even helped out at fullback. Now with Jacobs lost for at least one week, probably more, Droughns barely gets any touches at all (one catch for four yards and zero carries.
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - If Carolina isn't winning, he isn't getting the ball. Only 9 carries for 22 yards week two. He has 26 carries in two games, 0 TDs and DeAngelo Williams breathing down his neck. Foster is currently the 29th ranked fantasy RB so far. It looks like Foster will continue his ways and that's being a good RB with glimpses of brilliance, but in the end, failure to perform consistently. He does have a favorable schedule coming up with @ATL, TB, @NO.
RB Brandon Jackson, GB - Brandon Jackson is still learning how to be a NFL running back. He is getting ample opportunity with the injury to Vernand Morency. But, he is not capitalizing. The rookie from Nebraska finished Sunday's game versus the beat up Giants' defense with 17 carries for 35 yards and added 4 catches for 24 yards. The troublesome part for Jackson owners should be that Jackson is not getting carries on short yardage or goal line opportunities. Those carries are going to DeShawn Wynn. Also, the Packers traded for fellow rookie, Ryan Grant who got into the game today. Things even get stickier for Jackson when Morency comes back from injury.
RB Steven Jackson, STL - For the second game in a row, the Rams' OL failed to give Jackson any running room. Jackson is on pace for 300+ carries, but is averaging only 3.0 yards per carry so far this season -- about 1/3 fewer than last year -- and is also averaging about 1/3 fewer receptions than last year. While fantasy owners should still generally start Jackson if they have him, there is no immediate relief in site as the Rams travel to Tampa Bay this week.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson is suffering from a combination of getting fewer touches this year than last year, and, when he does get the ball, having narrower running lanes. He had 16 carries for 55 yards and no touchdowns on Sunday, giving him just 26 carries through the first two games. He is also averaging half a yard per carry less than he did last year (and 1.4 yards per carry less than he did in his stellar 2005 season). Moreover, it appears that the Chiefs will be playing from behind quite a bit this season, which may not allow them to emphasize the running game as much as they would like.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Jones remains the starter in Dallas for the time being, but RB Marion Barber is trying to make his case for more touches yet again. Jones had just 32 yards on 15 carries and added one lonely 24 yard reception, and more importantly was a stranger to the end zone. Jones owners should be concerned.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - This was the second week in a row of poor stats from Jones-Drew. Last year's exorbitant TD totals are officially missing in action. Jones-Drew is currently the 42nd ranked fantasy RB, which is a far cry from where he was last year. He and Fred Taylor are splitting the carries and neither one of them are doing well at all. Jacksonville's running game has really struggled so far and until that changes, we recommend benching Jones-Drew. His next three games @DEN, BYE, @KC.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Chester Taylor was injured in week one against the Atlanta Falcons. He injured his oblique muscle, which can be painful. This is the 2nd week in a row that Taylor has been downgraded. Not only did Peterson play OK, but also Mewelde Moore played very well. Taylor needs to get back into action as soon as possible to lay claim to his starting position.
RB LaDainian Tomlinson, SD - Tomlinson is still the number one fantasy player, but he is constantly facing eight-man fronts keyed on stopping him, and that is unlikely to change until the Chargers can spread the defense by throwing downfield to someone other than Gates. Tomlinson is averaging only 1.9 carries so far this year, and through two games he is on pace for only 544 rushing yards on the season. He will pick up the pace as his schedule becomes more favorable, but living up to last year's production appears extremely unlikely.
Holding steady
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Marty Booker, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Marty Booker is an underrated fantasy receiver. He played well against a banged up Dallas Cowboy secondary producing 4 receptions, 79 receiving yards and a touchdown 7 receiving targets. With the ineffectiveness of the Dolphin running game, Booker could be an unheralded spot starter for many fantasy teams in 2007.
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe started in place of the injured Eddie Kennison and played well. He scored one touchdown that counted and another that didn't (nullified by a penalty away from the ball). When Kennison comes back, Bowe may have a chance to displace Samie Parker as the Chiefs' WR2. His stat line Sunday, three catches for 22 yards and one TD, does not look as impressive as Bowe's actual on-field performance.
WR Deion Branch, SEA - Branch made the "Downgrade" list last week after getting just three targets (no catches), but he gets a bump this week back to where he was entering the season. He had 11 targets Sunday, which he converted into 7 catches for 122 yards. It looks like week one's three targets was a fluke. With D.J. Hackett out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain, Branch will be featured heavily in the Seahawks passing game in the coming weeks, and his schedule is appetizing. His matchups over the next eight weeks include the Bengals twice, the Niners twice, the Browns, and the Saints.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - The old man is still a huge part of the offense. Bruce had 13 targets on Sunday, pulling in eight passes for 145 yards. Any concerns that Drew Bennett would surpass him as the Rams' WR2 this year appear to be unfounded. The Rams will face a tough Tampa Bay defense this week, but then have a couple better matchups against Dallas and Arizona.
WR Chris Chambers, MIA - Chris Chambers is a target machine. He had 16 passes thrown his way this week and 13 last week. Against the Cowboys, Chambers had 9 catches for 109 yards. Last week, he had 6 catches for 92 yards. Chambers is clearly Trent Green's favorite target. He does need to convert more of the targets into receptions, but it is a great sign to be so targeted. Chambers is a playmaker and will have some huge games this year. Chambers is upgraded for the 2nd straight week.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - Laveranues Coles has had 2 straight good games against good defenses. Last week, he had 7 catches for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Patriots. This week, again with Kellen Clemens at quarterback, Coles finished with 6 catches for 57 yards. Both Jet receivers should have very good seasons. Coles had a good season last year and is rarely injured. He and Cotchery should benefit from an improved running game.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery has had 2 straight good games against great defenses. The young receiver is building off of a very productive 2006. Cotchery finished the day with 7 catches for 165 yards against a great Ravens defense. He also had 6 catches for 57 yards last week against the Patriots. This production from Cotchery was especially amazing considering his quarterback was starting his first career game.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards had a career afternoon, snaring two touchdowns of over 30 yards each and racking up 146 yards on eight receptions. He was all over the field making plays, even deflecting a pass over the middle to himself, catching it on his back in the middle of the field. Edwards owners know that he has the skill set to become an elite NFL WR, and now it seems that he has someone to throw him the ball well enough to show those skills.
WR Mike Furrey, DET - Mike Furrey is benefiting form the Lions slowly working Calvin Johnson into the action and from the 3 and 4 receiver sets utilized by Detroit. This week, Furrey finished with 5 catches for 60 yards. Last week, he had 5 catches for 52 yards. Furrey is unassuming but is a very good possession receiver. He proved last year that he could be effective in the Martz offense.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - He is clearly the WR1 on the Bucs with nobody really that close at all as the WR2. He should benefit greatly all season long as a result (4 receptions, 135 yards, 2 TDs in week two). Galloway is currently the 7th ranked fantasy WR after that strong week two.
WR Glenn Holt, CIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Who? Glenn Holt, that's who. While it may have felt like Carson Palmer was throwing touchdowns to every Bengal on Sunday, Holt is actually quite familiar with putting up a lot of offense. The sophomore WR from Kentucky looks to be the beneficiary of the elusive search in Cincinnati for a third receiver option while Chris Henry is suspended. Once Tab Perry left the game with an injury, Holt seized the chance and caught five balls for 52 yards and his first NFL touchdown.
WR Sam Hurd, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - By now the news of Terry Glenn's knee surgery and the elevation of Patrick Crayton to starter should be common knowledge, but for every promotion there is a void left behind. Enter Sam Hurd as the new third receiver in Dallas. Hurd scored a TD in Week 1 and while he only had two receptions and 18 yards in Week 2, he could be seeing far more action of Patrick Crayton's latest injury (broken finger) forces him from the WR rotation.
WR Calvin Johnson, DET - Rookie Calvin Johnson has looked very good in his first two games as a professional. He has 2 games with 4 catches each and a TD. The former Yellow Jacket had 4 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. The Lions are working him into the games slowly, but the guy is a playmaker. Johnson is upgraded for the 2nd week in a row. He could be a fantasy force by midseason.
WR James Jones, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - James Jones started once again in place of the injured, Greg Jennings. The rookie had 4 catches for 75 yards. Jones is gaining the confidence of Brett Favre. This is his second straight game with 4 catches. Defenses are able to contain Donald Driver and this leaves Jones with more room to roam. The Packers do not have another viable receiver to play the WR3 position, leaving Driver and Jones to carry the burden while Jennings is injured. Favre passes almost 40 times per game on average over the last couple of seasons leaving much opportunity for Jones to succeed.
WR Joe Jurevicius, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The cagey veteran just keeps on producing, wherever he goes in the NFL. Jurevicius scored two touchdowns on four catches and 44 yards in Week 2. While that amazing ratio likely won't continue going forward, you could do far worse with a selection from your waiver wire for another receiver.
WR Brandon Marshall, DEN - Marshall is establishing himself as a legitimate weapon opposite Javon Walker. He had nine targets on Sunday against the Raiders, and he showed excellent strength running with the ball after the catch. He caught 5 passes for 82 yards, but his stat line understates his performance, as he also had 2 catches for 41 yards and a TD called back due to penalties.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - The veteran wide receiver is back on the fantasy radar, and it isn't because he's rediscovered his relationship with Steve McNair. The Ravens are running out of options to catch the ball, and Mason is a direct beneficiary. Mason complained about the lack of targets last year and it seems that problem will be corrected as Mark Clayton has an ankle issue and now it seems that Demetrius Williams may also have a problem with his shoulder after a hard fall in Week 2. Mason's eight catches for 54 yards could easily be a sign of more production to come in the near future.
WR Shaun McDonald, DET - Shaun McDonald is upgraded for the 2nd straight week. He finished the game with 7 catches for 71 yards. With the Lions running four receiver sets, McDonald becomes a decent spot starter in large leagues. All of the Lion wideouts can have a big game any week. That offense is explosive and McDonald is familiar with Mike Martz from his St. Louis Ram days. He had six catches last week as well. With the Lions passing 56 times, like they did this week, all four Lions receivers become viable.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Most predicted trouble for Randy Moss in New England. But, they have been disappointed. After totaling 9 catches for 183 receiving yards and a touchdown in week one, Moss outdid himself in week two against a very good Charger defense. He finished with 8 catches for 105 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His two-week total is amazing. He has 17 receptions for 288 yards and 3 scores. This is the same Randy Moss that was rumored to be cut in preseason because of his injuries. Moss is upgraded for the 2nd straight week.
WR Roscoe Parrish, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Roscoe Parrish is benefiting from the Bills' opponents shutting down Lee Evans. Parrish is a speedster who can get separation. He had 6 catches for 56 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. One thing holding Parrish back is the struggling J.P. Losman. He has not looked good in the first two games. Keep an eye on Parrish as the schedule softens up some after playing the Broncos and Steelers the first two weeks.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Smith was upgraded last week, but how do you hold steady with another 100+ yard day with 3 TDs? Smith is the current #1 fantasy WR with 51 points, which is ironically the same as his QB, Jake Delhomme. Smith and Plaxico Burress are the only players with 4 TDs scored this year. His next three games are @ATL, TB, @NO.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Another steady veteran just keeps on moving those chains in the passing game. QB Eli Manning said in 2006 that he just was not the same quarterback once Toomer was lost for the season last year, which should tell you how important of a piece that Toomer is in that offense. Toomer added 48 yards in Week 2 on two catches, but as the Giants continue to get involved in high scoring affairs, Toomer will have ample chances to find the end zone.
WR Wes Welker, NE - Wes Welker is upgraded for the second straight week. He looks to be on the same page as Tom Brady. Against a tough Charger defense, Welker had 8 catches for 91 receiving yards. Welker adds a ton of value in leagues that reward return yardage. Welker has started the season with a bang. His two week total is 14 catches for 152 yards and 1 score. In leagues that offer PPR scoring, Welker is a good bench receiver that can be used as a spot starter without hesitation.
WR Roddy White, ATL - Atlanta is going to be a bad football team this season, but this is the second week in a row where he looks like the primary receiver, maybe even ahead of Alge Crumpler. In deeper leagues, White could be used as a WR4, but nothing more than that at this time. His next three games include CAR, HOU, @TEN.
WR Roydell Williams, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - When Tennessee does get a chance to pass the ball, it looks like Roydell Williams might be the primary receiver (4 receptions for 72 yards and a TD) in week two. Keep an eye on this situation. If week two's performance has any indication on future playing time, Williams may be a sneaky waiver wire move to acquire in deeper leagues. His next three games are @NO, BYE, ATL.
Downgrade
WR Mark Clayton, BAL - Clayton was out of the starting lineup for the second week as his ankle continues to bother him. He came off the bench to add just one catch for minus 1 yard against the Jets. The Ravens could use him sooner rather than later, but with Demetrius Williams and Derrick Mason doing well as the starters, Clayton needs to get back on the field for more than just cameo appearances. We think it's likely an injury situation, but this is now two weeks of horrible play. Bench him until he actually has a decent game.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton experienced an open dislocation of his right pinky finger in Week 2 yet was able to return punts. He finished without a reception against the Dolphins, and if the injury affects his receiving abilities the opportunity to show what he can do as a starter may elude Crayton once again.
WR Craig Davis, SD - Davis has struggled to get open in each of the first two games, and QB Philip Rivers has locked on to Gates, Tomlinson, and Jackson in the passing game, making Davis mostly an afterthought. He had no catches against the Patriots on Sunday.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Lee Evans has been shut down in the first two weeks of the season against two good defenses. After being shut down by Champ Bailey and the Denver Broncos, Evans produced 17 receiving yards on just two catches. Quarterback, J.P. Losman, is not helping matters any. Evans, known as a big play receiver, is literally being shut down by opposing defenses.
WR Joe Horn, ATL - Joe Horn was signed by the Falcons to bolster their lagging WR corps. Through two games, Horn has a total of three catches for 48 yards. Roddy White is the clear WR1 in Atlanta. With Alge Crumpler also heavily involved, there isn't enough passing game to make Horn a viable fantasy option.
WR Vincent Jackson, SD - While Jackson caught four of his six targets for 53 yards on Sunday, he is not being featured as the team's WR1. Antonio Gates has been lining up outside quite a bit as a split end, and is the target Rivers most trusts in passing situations. Jackson hasn't looked completely comfortable catching the ball in traffic through the first two games, and has yet to get open deep.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Second year pro, Greg Jennings, remains out with injury. His absence has left the door wide open for rookie James Jones. Jennings looked very promising in 2006 before injury. He now needs to get healthy and prove that he can stay healthy.
WR Muhsin Muhammad, CHI - Veteran receiver, Muhsin Muhammad, has had a miserable start to the 2007 season. In week one, against the San Diego Chargers, Muhammad had one catch for eight yards. He followed that up in week two, against a poor and nicked up Chiefs' defense, with one catch for seven yards on four pass targets. One was a bad 4th quarter drop. Rex Grossman needs his veteran receiver to step up.
WR Tab Perry, CIN - Perry caught just one pass for seven yards and then was forced from the Week 2 game against Cleveland with an injury. His replacement (Glenn Holt) put up solid numbers (5-52-1), so Perry's claim at being the third receiver option for the Bengals may have come and gone.
WR Steve Smith, NYG - We hope you aren't relying on this Steve Smith (if so, we need to do a better job in the preseason). He is expected to miss at least two weeks and maybe a month with a fractured scapula.
WR Donte Stallworth, NE - Donte Stallworth is disappointing his fantasy owners in a big way. He was brought in, along with Randy Moss and Wes Welker, to upgrade the Patriot receiving corps. But, while Moss and Welker were running wild in week two against the Chargers, Stallworth managed just 2 catches for 19 yards. He has a one-year contract and looks to not be back in New England in 2008.
Holding steady
WR Ronald Curry, OAK - Curry's two catches for 12 yards is quite a disappointing follow-up to his stellar week one performance, but don't count his stat line against him too harshly: he was covered by Champ Bailey for most of the day. Curry will still be a major part of the Raiders' passing game this year, and faces a much better matchup this week against the Browns.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Rarely is such an obvious upgrade also a potential downgrade. Despite Andre Johnson's seven-catch, 120-yard, and two-TD day, there is concern thanks to a PCL injury that will likely cause him to miss at least a week but maybe longer. "He has a knee sprain," HC Greg Kubiak said. "That's the good news and the bad news. We feel fortunate. Andre is going to be fine. Is he going to be fine in one week? Or is he going to be fine in four weeks? We're still in the evaluation stage. We don't know."
WR Jeff Webb, KC - Webb led the Chiefs in receiving against the Bears on Sunday, but got most of his targets in garbage time, and was only in the game as the Chiefs' third WR because of the injury to Kennison. Despite his four catches for 59 yards on Sunday, he is generally not worth a waiver-wire pickup.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Dallas Clark ed the Colts with 7 receptions in week two. He also scored the only Colts receiving TD on the day. Don't look now, but Clark is ranked 4th among fantasy TEs. He is nearly averaging 5 receptions per game so far and has often been used as a safety valve on third downs for Peyton Manning. His next three games are @HOU, DEN, TB.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - After a lackluster week one, Daniels turns in a 5 reception, 58-yard game at Carolina, who historically has given up high yardage to tight ends. Daniels could be the biggest benefactor if Andre Johnson misses any time. Right now he's the second option in the passing game behind Andre Johnson. The value is definitely there even if Johnson doesn't miss any time.
TE Antonio Gates, SD - He is already the top fantasy tight end, and he is climbing the overall list. Through two games, he is on pace for 1472 yards and 16 touchdowns. While he is very unlikely to maintain that pace over the course of the season, he has appeared uncoverable against two of the tougher defenses in the league. The Chargers have been lining Gates up out wide quite a bit, using him as a wide receiver, and he has been very effective in that role.
TE Todd Heap, BAL - Heap has now caught at least three balls in 18 straight games, and he did not miss a beat with Kyle Boller throwing to him in Week 2. Heap finished with seven receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown, a stellar one-handed catch while tapping his toes in the end zone.
TE Donald Lee, GB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Lee doesn't get a lot of attention but he's drawn the attention of Brett Favre. He has had two straight weeks with 4 catches. Against the Giants in week 2, Lee had 4 catches for 35 yards and a 1 touchdown. The five-year pro from Mississippi State is just now popping up on radar of many fantasy owners.
TE Sean McHugh, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Yes, the Detroit Lions do have a tight end. His name is Sean McHugh. Many fantasy footballers have never heard of McHugh. But, he finished with 3 catches for 27 yards this week against the solid Minnesota Viking defense. McHugh had 2 catches for 45 yards last week against the Raiders. Keep an eye on McHugh the next couple of weeks. He could provide tight end depth for fantasy teams.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow is one of those players that is just a must start as long as he is healthy and he has a decent QB throwing him the ball. Well, those two rare events came together in Week 2 for him as he grabbed six balls for an even 100 yards and a touchdown. Winslow could be poised to lead the Browns in receptions this season and be amongst the leaders for all TEs.
Downgrade
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Davis had the ball thrown his way only twice on Sunday, and for the second week in a row was held to two receptions (no touchdowns). Davis is a talented athlete, but he is being under-utilized in the Forty-Niners' offense. They are not throwing the ball a lot, and when they did throw the ball on Sunday, Davis was often kept in to help pass-block. Things will not get any easier over the next three weeks as the Niners face the Steelers, Seahawks, and Ravens.
TE David Martin, MIA - David Martin downgraded 2nd week in a row ...2/15 on 2 targets and 1/7 last week.
TE Tony Scheffler, DEN - For the second week in a row, Scheffler was a complete non-factor. He is yet to see his first target this season, and appears not to be worth a fantasy roster spot in redraft leagues.
TE Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN - Visanthe Shiancoe is downgraded for the 2nd week in a row. Last week he had 2 catches for 18 yards. This week, with Jackson throwing the ball 33 times, he manages no catches. He is not viable for fantasy leagues at this time.
Holding steady
TE Heath Miller, PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger was moving the Steelers' offense by spreading the ball around in the passing game, finding nine different receivers. Miller had just two catches for 34 yards, but only three wide receivers had more output than Miller in Week 2.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten followed up a great Week 1 performance with a pedestrian Week 2 against Miami. Witten's two catches for 27 yards are not cause for concern, however, as he produced the second highest number of yards and catches for the Cowboys against the Dolphins. He remains a favored target from QB Tony Romo and should get more chances going forward.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Kris Brown, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Texans are averaging 27 points per game (6/6 PAT) and Brown is 4/4 on FG attempts. His longest FG so far is only 33 yards, but the consistency is there, not to mention the point after attempts. If you need a kicker, consider Kris Brown. His next three games are IND, @ATL, MIA.
PK Nick Folk, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The rookie kicker continues to deliver for the Cowboys, making three field goals and four extra points. His 13 points were highlighted by a 47 yard field goal, and while the season is young it is worth noting that he remains perfect for the year, a key confidence booster for a rookie. Folk should continue to deliver good numbers for a high-powered Dallas offense.
PK Shayne Graham, CIN - Graham looked 100% healthy again, converting all seven of his kicks in Week 2. None of the attempts were of much distance, as they were just six extra points and a 20 yard field goal, but Graham should continue to be a high scoring kicker as Cincinnati looks to post big numbers on the scoreboard.
PK Jeff Reed, PIT -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Steelers can flat out move the ball. On occasion, they will struggle to punch it in for the touchdown much like they did in Week 2. Reed converted four field goals and added two extra points for a total of 14 tallies on the scoreboard. He should put up plenty of points for an offense that looks like it should produce all season.
Downgrade
PK Olindo Mare, NO - Only two PATs attempted, plus he is 1 for 3 on FG, including 1 for 2 on attempts under 40 yards. The whole upside to Mare was that he would have a lot of PATs on such a potent offense. That has not been the case so far. His next three games are TEN, BYE, CAR. The fact that there is a bye week in there already should prompt you to look elsewhere for your kicker.
Holding steady
Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Houston Texans, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Six sacks, three INT, four fumble recoveries, one return TD and one fumble recovery for a TD in two games. Those numbers speak for themselves. We mentioned the Texans as a waiver wire pick up last week. If you haven't done so and are in need of a defense, definitely consider Houston. They are currently a top five defense and might still be on the waiver wire. The next three games are IND, @ATL, MIA.
TD Minnesota Vikings, MIN - The Minnesota Viking defense is upgraded for the 2nd week in a row. They were awesome in preseason and that was just a precursor of things to come. Last week saw the Vikings' defense take two Joey Harrington passes back for scores. This week, against the vaunted Detroit Lion offense, the Vikings had 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 Interceptions. The Vikings held the Lions to just 20 points. The Minnesota defense is stiff against the run with the Williams boys upfront and they get pressure on the quarterback on almost every pass play.
Downgrade
TD Cincinnati Bengals, CIN - When you give up 51 points, over 500 yards, five TD passes, and a 200 yard game to a running back and a wide receiver in the same game -- yeah, you get downgraded.
TD Miami Dolphins, MIA - The Miami Dolphins defense was highly ranked by many entering the 2007 season. In week two, against the Dallas Cowboys, the Dolphins gave up 37 points with no turnovers and only one sack. This is pitiful. Yes, the Cowboy offense is good. But, this was a very poor showing by a defense with many good players.
TD Carolina Panthers, CAR - The Panthers have 1 sack and 0 INTs in two games so far. They do have 3 fumble recoveries, but this is a squad that was expected to do more. The next three games are @ATL, TB, @NO. If the Panthers defense can't turn it around after this stretch, you can all, but forget about starting them for your team.
