Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Drew Brees, NO - The Saints travel to blustery Chicago for their last game of the year. They need to win and have Washington and Minnesota to lose next week. No matter how you look at it, New Orleans will play to win at all costs.
QB Marc Bulger, STL - Bulger heads to Arizona this week to face the Cardinals, who are giving up an average of 237 passing yards per game this season. Opposing QBs have scored at least 20 fantasy points against the Cardinals in each of the last seven games. Bulger completed 18 of 35 pass attempts for 208 yards and 3 TDs against the Steelers on Thursday, and should better that performance this week against the Cardinals.
QB Todd Collins, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Collins had a very good performance in Week 16 against the Vikings. He was named the player of the game for Sunday Night Football, as he went 22-29-254-2-0 on the night. He led the Redskins to an early lead with his two touchdown passes in the first half and then kept Washington moving forward to the victory. Expect more of the same from him in Week 17 as the Redskins get into the playoffs with a win over the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has already locked up the #1 spot in the NFC so they may rest some of their players.
QB Quinn Gray, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jacksonville has the #5 seed in the AFC locked up, so they may decide to go with backup QB Quinn Gray. If he doesn't start, he should at least get plenty of playing time. Stay tuned for further details this week as Jacksonville decides on their plan.
QB Shaun Hill, SF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Hill will face the Browns in week 17, so watch the weather since this one is in Cleveland. But the Browns have given up the most passing yards in the league this season, and until the last two weeks, had not held opposing teams' QBs under 15 fantasy points in any game this season. Hill threw three touchdowns last week and has rejuvenated a 49er offense that had been largely dormant for much of the season. If you need a QB off the waiver wire for a week 17 start, look for Shaun Hill.
QB Tarvaris Jackson, MIN - Tarvaris Jackson has been on a roll as of late for fantasy owners. Against the Redskins on Sunday night, the second-year pro scored three total touchdowns. He completed 25 of 41 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added 44 rushing yards and two scoring runs. This is a good fantasy game for the young passer.
QB Luke McCown, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - McCown had 32 pass attempts in week 16, so he either will start week 17 or at least receive a lot of playing time. Tampa Bay hosts Carolina, who has only pride to play for. McCown could be a nice play if he gets the start.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - McNabb looked like his old Pro Bowl QB self against New Orleans in Week 16, throwing for over 350 yards. Even more telling than his passing numbers (24-35-363-3-0) was his ability to scramble. McNabb ran for 40 yards in the first quarter on an intended pass play and was on his way to score until a defender caught him and punched the ball out. His speed and decisiveness was reminiscent of the pre-knee injury McNabb, which should encourage fantasy owners and Eagles fans. McNabb will look to put up another strong performance next week against Buffalo to finish the regular season.
QB Matt Moore, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Carolina will face the Buccaneers on the road who will have nothing to play for with the division title wrapped up. Moore had good chemistry with Steve Smith last week against Dallas, so it's safe to say the two might hook up again in week 17. Steve Smith did leave the game last week with a shoulder or collarbone injury, but he returned to the game three plays later. It is unclear if Smith will play next week or not, but the injury did not appear too serious if he returned to the game.
QB Chad Pennington, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Chad Pennington was accurate, but underwhelming in the loss to the Tennessee Titans. He completed 26 of 32 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. The former Marshall star looked often in the direction of Jerricho Cotchery to make plays. Kellen Clemens was active, but coach Mangini went with Pennington over the youngster.
QB Chris Redman, ATL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Redman had 315 yards passing and two TDs last week at Arizona. This week Seattle comes to town and likely will be resting some of their starters with a playoff berth already decided. Redman could enjoy another good game as a result. Week 17 is difficult to determine, but sometimes the unlikely names are productive.
QB Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - Ben Roethlisberger started fast for the Steelers in Week 16, throwing a deep strike to Santonio Holmes for an 83 yard completion -- but not a score. Pittsburgh actually lost yards on the next two runs before Roethlisberger threw his first touchdown, giving him 100 yards passing on a single drive. He finished the game with a perfect QB rating (16-20-261-3-0) but was really not asked to do too much, even with the loss of Willie Parker, as he had to only make 20 attempts. Pittsburgh may ask more of Roethlisberger in Week 17 and in the postseason with the loss of their primary runner, but it seems that Roethlisberger will be up to the challenge.
QB Sage Rosenfels, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Texans will host the Jaguars, who are locked into the #5 seed in the AFC, which means Jacksonville may rest several starters. Rosenfels should have a productive day as a result.
QB JaMarcus Russell, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - While Russell merits an upgrade because he will get his first NFL start this week against the Chargers, we do not recommend inserting him into your starting fantasy lineup this week. Russell completed 7 of 23 pass attempts for 83 yards and a touchdown yesterday, throwing three picks in the process. This week he faces a Charger defense that has held opposing QBs to 1.7 fantasy points per game below their season averages this year.
QB Jim Sorgi, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Sorgi could find himself with a lot of playing time next week against Tennessee. It is unclear if the Colts will rest their starters from the get go or if they will get a comfortable lead and then rest their starters. Either way, Sorgi could see the field for at least two quarters. We don't consider starting him unless news comes out that Peyton Manning will rest the entire game.
QB Vince Young, TEN - The Titans are still alive so consider that an upgrade. Young should play the entire game against the Colts in the dome at Indianapolis. While it's not the greatest match up, weather won't be a factor and the Titans will do whatever they can to get the win.
Downgrade
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson had his worst game as a starter, throwing four interceptions and he could have easily had more. He was overlooking a wide open Kellen Winslow for most of the first half, and then he compounded that problem by forcing it to him after halftime which resulted in turnovers. Anderson finished with decent fantasy numbers (29-48-250-2-4) aside from the four picks, mostly due to the high number of attempts that occurred as Cleveland tried to catch up on the scoreboard. Look for Anderson to bounce back next week against a suspect 49er pass defense.
QB Brodie Croyle, KC - Croyle left Sunday's game in the second quarter, injuring himself while trying to make a tackle after throwing an interception. To that point in the game, he had completed 9 of 12 passes for just 69 yards (no touchdowns, one interception). Croyle's status this week against the Jets is uncertain, but even if he gets the start, he is not a great fantasy option. The Jets have held opposing QBs in check over the second half of the season, giving up an average of fewer than 11 fantasy points over their seven games.
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - The Bucs have locked up their playoff berth and coach Jon Gruden has already started to rest some of his starters, including Garcia in the week 16 game. We don't recommend using Garcia in your lineup next week.
QB David Garrard, JAX - The Jaguars are locked into the #5 seed in the AFC playoffs, which means David Garrard either will rest the entire game or at least only play some of the game. As a result, we don't recommend starting him next week at Houston.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Jon Kitna attempted just 16 passes, completing nine, for 115 yards and a pick. The Lions relied on the running game much more than normal. This was Kitna's second game without a touchdown toss in three weeks. With the Packers next on the schedule, Kitna is not a great fantasy option for owners.
QB Cleo Lemon, MIA - Cleo Lemon is not a NFL-caliber quarterback. He cost the Dolphins a touchdown in the second half when he made a passive attempt to beat the defender to the pylon. On the day, Lemon completed 18 of his 41 passes for 171 yards and a scoring toss. He added nine rushing yards. The Dolphin receivers are nothing special, but the quarterback play has not been good.
QB Eli Manning, NYG - Manning had a really bad day against Buffalo, but some of that has to be attributed to the rain, snow and wind. He had minimal attempts (7-15-111-0-2) but was intercepted twice and fumbled three times, losing two. He faces the Patriots next week, a bad matchup, so that along with his turnover issue causes the downgrade.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - The Colts have the #2 seed locked up no matter what they or New England does in week 17. As a result, the Colts could decide to rest Peyton Manning. He is 55 yards short of reaching 4000 yards passing this season, which might be enough for him to stay in the game for at least one quarter. We don't recommend hanging your hopes on Manning this week. If he plays at all, he likely won't play into the second half.
QB Josh McCown, OAK - McCown will give way to JaMarcus Russell this week as the Raiders' starter.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - So much for that great playoff schedule for Carson Palmer. He had yet another bad passing day (11-21-115-1-2), which was just enough to secure a victory for the Bengals. The windy conditions certainly did not help Palmer, but what limited his attempts was that the Bengals were out ahead early and then decided to emphasize the ground game. Palmer will look to end the season on a much better note, and to his fortune he gets the Miami Dolphins in Week 17 -- but again, he has not lit up any defense as of late.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Romo was able to take the start in Week 16 despite a bruised thumb on his throwing hand. He appeared to be doing fine, although he did not quite have his usual accuracy. Look for Romo to sit a good deal in the regular season finale as the Cowboys can not afford to lose him to injury
Holding steady
QB Trent Edwards, BUF - Trent Edwards had a bad game in less than ideal weather conditions. The rookie from Stanford completed just 9 of 26 passes for 161 yards with two scoring tosses and three picks. He also had a pass go through the hands of Lee Evans and intercepted for a touchdown. Prior to this outing, Edwards has generally played well since taking over for J.P. Losman.
QB Brett Favre, GB - Brett Favre had a poor game in bad conditions. He started off very slow but picked up the pace after the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter. The veteran completed 17 of his 32 passes for 153 and two interceptions. The gusty winds made passing difficult for half of the game when the wind was in the face of the passer. Favre gets the Lions next week, which should help him bounce back with a good game.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Mike Anderson, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Anderson came in to the running back picture again for the Ravens with the loss of McGahee in Week 16. Anderson ran effectively, gaining 44 yards on just eight carries, and he looked like a better option as a rusher than Musa Smith. The Ravens stand to gain nothing from Week 17, so if McGahee is shut down for the year, look for Anderson to split time in the backfield with Smith.
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber had the most carries for any Dallas running back on the year in Week 16 as he rushed 22 times for 110 yards and a touchdown. He also added three catches for 16 yards as the Cowboys got back on track in preparation for the playoffs. He should still get work in Week 17, but the questions now are whether he will be used as the feature back or still lose a few touches now and then to Julius Jones.
RB Michael Bennett, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Bennett should see an increase in carries next week against Carolina with Earnest Graham likely resting up for the playoffs. We don't necessarily recommend starting Bennett, because he will share rushing duties with Michael Pittman and Pittman will get more receiving opportunities.
RB Lorenzo Booker, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Lorenzo Booker was used in both the running and passing games versus the Patriots. The rookie from Florida State ran eight times for 56 yards. In addition, he hauled in three passes for 26 yards. Booker displayed exceptional quickness with the ball in his hands.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Bradshaw came on for the Giants in Week 16 with Brandon Jacobs out with a sprained ankle, and many were impressed with the rookie rusher. The seventh-round rookie out of Marshall had a career day, rushing for 151 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts, including an 88-yard touchdown that broke the game open against Buffalo and clinched the Giants into the postseason. With nothing at stake next week for the Giants, Bradshaw may see most of the work against New England.
RB Chris Brown, TEN - Brown has not been a rushing threat for the Titans in quite some time, but he does have a TD in three of his last four games. LenDale White should see the majority of the carries, but Brown may not be a bad play this week if you absolutely have no other option. The Titans will be trying to win at all costs, and Brown has a nose for the end zone of late.
RB Correll Buckhalter, PHI - Buckhalter ran hard when he was given the opportunity, which was slightly more than usual considering his recent concussion. He had four carries against New Orleans in Week 16, but he made them all count -- especially his first -- a 20 yard touchdown. Brian Westbrook is still the primary back, but Buckhalter has slightly more value than just as a handcuff.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Jesse Chatman looked healthy against New England. He is a strong runner with a little quickness. With the game out of hand, the former Charger gave way to the rookie Lorenzo Booker. Chatman totaled 38 rushing yards on nine carries and 25 yards on a pair of catches. The former backup looks like he can be successful if given enough carries.
RB Najeh Davenport, PIT -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Davenport was thrust into the starting back role in Week 16 when Willie Parker broke his leg in the first quarter. He answered the challenge, gaining 123 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and also racking up 44 yards on two receptions and yet another score. Davenport will be the starting tailback for Pittsburgh in Week 17 and in the postseason as the Steelers have very few choices beyond him on the depth chart.
RB Clifton Dawson, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Dawson saw some action (10 carries for 21 yards) in the game last week against the Texans and scored a TD simply by being a RB on the field playing for the Colts. As a result, he merits some consideration next week. He could score another TD, especially late in the game if the game is out of hand.
RB T.J. Duckett, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - T.J. Duckett should get the majority of the carries for the Lions in week seventeen. With Kevin Jones suffering a serious knee injury, the former Michigan State Spartan should see significant carries next week. He toted the ball fifteen times for 102 yards and a scoring run. The former Spartan added 22 yards while catching his only two pass targets.
RB Ryan Grant, GB - Ryan Grant ran only fourteen times against the Bears. But, he still rushed for 100 yards and a score from 66 yards out. The rookie from Notre Dame did not get as many touches in the second half with the Packers down by a lot of points. He has now scored in five straight games for the Packers. Grant has a good chance at topping the 1,000-yard mark this season with a soft matchup against the Detroit Lions next week. He is just 101 yards away.
RB Brandon Jackson, GB - Brandon Jackson saw action with the game out of hand. The rookie from Nebraska carried the ball three times for 25 yards, including a long of 15 yards. The former Cornhusker added a thirteen-yard reception. He only has 154 rushing yards on the season. With a soft matchup against the Lions next week, the rookie might see extended action.
RB Steven Jackson, STL - Jackson has been strong over the second half of the season, and this week he faces a Cardinals defense that has given up a lot of touchdowns this season. Jackson should finish the 2007 season on a high note. Start him if you go him.
RB Edgerrin James, ARI - James rushed for 76 yards on 25 carries against the Falcons, and added 21 receiving yards on 5 catches. He will face the Rams this week, who allowed opposing RBs to rack up 2.6 fantasy points per game above their average this season.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - With Jacksonville in resting their starters mode, Jones-Drew could see an increase in touches if Fred Taylor takes a seat on the bench to rest for the playoffs. Jones-Drew will also rest some as well, but probably not as much as Taylor. The Jags are on the road at Houston, so the match up is a favorable one. MJD could be a very nice week 17 start. We recommend playing him as a result.
RB Kenton Keith, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With the Colts also looking to rest their starters, Kenton Keith should get plenty of carries with Joseph Addai likely seeing a lot of the bench Sunday night against the Titans. Keith is a very good start this week. If you have him as a handcuff for Addai, or if you are lucky enough to have him on your bench, go ahead and play him, because he should see plenty of action, especially if/when Peyton Manning is pulled from the game.
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Jamal Lewis put up yet another solid performance in Week 16, gaining 92 yards on 21 carries against the Bengals. He even added some work as a receiver, picking up 42 yards on five catches. Lewis is trying to help both the Browns get wins and also himself to a new contract, as he is a free agent at the end of the year. Lewis has another great matchup next week against San Francisco, so look for him to have another productive performance.
RB Marshawn Lynch, BUF - Marshawn Lynch had another good game. The rookie from Cal tallied 70 yards on 18 rushes, with a scoring run. He added another 42 yards on two catches. Lynch is the focal point of the Buffalo Bill offense. Since coming back from injury in week fourteen, the first-year pro has 259 rushing yards and 42 receiving yards in the three games.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney had his second great game in a row. The former Minnesota Gopher rushed only 14 times for 156 yards and a score. His first two runs went for over 50 yards, and this was easily Maroney's best game of the season. The second-year pro could have a good game against the New York Giants in week seventeen as the Giants allowed Marshawn Lynch to have a good game in week sixteen and have nothing to play for in the regular season finale.
RB Adrian Peterson, CHI - Adrian Peterson had a very good game against a stout Green Bay Packer defense. With the weather conditions so poor, the Chicago Bears relied on their running back to carry the load. Peterson carried the ball 30 times for 102 yards and a short yardage score. He also caught one of his two targets for a sixteen-yard pass from Kyle Orton.
RB Michael Pittman, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Pittman and Michael Bennett should see plenty of looks in the game next week against Carolina with Earnest Graham likely resting up for the playoffs. If you start any Bucs RB, Pittman is the better choice. Not only will he see more carries, but he will also see more receptions. Pittman is not a bad start this week and could be used as your RB4 or flex option.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - On a night where NBC expected to bestow accolades on another feature running back, Portis stole the show. Whether it was more about the Redskins getting the victory or showing why Portis deserved a Pro Bowl nod, Portis stole the show in every aspect. He ran the ball hard and effectively, racking up 76 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries against the #1 run defense in the league. As a receiver he added five catches and 48 yards, but he was not done yet. On a gadget play, Portis rolled right and threw to Antwaan Randle El for a touchdown to help Washington take control of their playoff chances. With that known, look for the Redskins to ride Portis' hot hand through Week 17 in an effort to get to the postseason. Their opponents are the Dallas Cowboys, who will be without Terrell Owens and have clinched the #1 spot in the playoffs, so the game may come easier for all the Redskin players.
RB Kolby Smith, KC - Smith had over 100 yards from scrimmage for the second straight game yesterday and faces one of the more generous run defenses in the league this week in the New York Jets. The Jets are giving up an average of 140 rushing yards per game this season, and the Chiefs are likely to emphasize the run in week 17. Keep an eye on the injury report, however, since Larry Johnson has not officially been ruled out of this week's game.
RB Musa Smith, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Musa Smith was called upon as the replacement for the injured Willis McGahee in Week 16. He posted just 25 yards on seven carries and added two catches for 12 yards against a tough Seahawk defense. The Ravens stand to gain nothing from Week 17, so if McGahee is shut down for the year, look for Smith to split time in the backfield with Mike Anderson.
RB Aaron Stecker, NO - Stecker didn't necessarily have a great game rushing the ball last week (13 carries for 49 yards), but he did score two TDs. The Saints will go on the road to Chicago hoping to win and have help in order to make the playoffs. As a result, Stecker is definitely worth starting in your lineup next week.
RB Kenny Watson, CIN - Watson got the start in Week 16 as Rudi Johnson was inactive. Watson performed very well, carrying the ball numerous times (30-170-1) and adding three catches for an extra 20 yards. Watson also found the end zone and looked very much like a starting running back -- something I am sure that Watson wants others to think as well. The Bengals face Miami next week and Watson may also get the start there, which is a great matchup.
RB LenDale White, TEN - White is a good number two fantasy RB next week on the road at Indianapolis. If the Titans win, they are in the playoffs, so you can bet LenDale White will be a major factor in the offense. Start him if you've got him.
RB DeAngelo Williams, CAR - Williams got more looks at RB for the Panthers last week than DeShaun Foster, so the same could be in store this week at Tampa Bay. Williams is a dynamic runner who always seems to break at least one gain of 20 yards or more in every game he plays. As a result, Williams is a good start next week as a low to mid number two fantasy RB for your lineup.
Downgrade
RB Joseph Addai, IND - The Colts rested Addai last week, so the same should continue this week against the Titans. With nothing to play for Addai either will not see any action or very limited (one or two series) action. We don't recommend starting Addai this week, but we do like his replacement Kenton Keith and to a very limited extent, Clifton Dawson.
RB Reggie Bush, NO - It appears as if the Saints have shut down Reggie Bush for the rest of the 2007 season. He was inactive in week 16 and the same seems to be the case for week 17.
RB Ron Dayne, HOU - Dayne did not play at all last week against the Colts. He is still suffering from an injured ankle. It is unclear if he will play next week or not. Either way, the Texans may want to take another look at Darius Walker, the rookie out of Notre Dame. Even if he does play, the Texans face the Jaguars and their tough defense. It's not a good match up to begin with. Monitor Dayne's status this week to see if he'll play. If he does play, he is a low end RB3 at best.
RB Reuben Droughns, NYG - With the performances of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw against Buffalo in Week 16, Droughns finds himself as the third best option for the Giants. While he may see some work in Week 17, do not count on any regular touches for the rest of the year or postseason. Droughns had a goal line role but even that did not work out well in Week 16, so he may be demoted permanently.
RB Warrick Dunn, ATL - Dunn may still be on your roster somewhere. If so, he's probably on your bench. He should stay there after rushing for only 13 yards on 12 carries last week against the Cardinals.
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - The Panthers decided to go with more carries to DeAngelo Williams last week and the same could be true in the season finale against the Buccaneers. As a result, we don't recommend starting Foster.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - Johnson was inactive and could be shut down for the rest of the season, as the Bengals really don't have much to play for in Week 17.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Julius Jones somehow gets work, but not for long in Dallas it would seem. He had just 25 yards on nine carries to go with a lone two-yard reception against Carolina. Meanwhile Marion Barber touched the ball 25 times and scored again. Jones should be looking for a new team this March.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Kevin Jones left the game against the Packers with a knee injury that coach Marinelli call "serious". The former Hokie had eight carries for just 15 yards and added a one-yard catch. The season is over for the promising young running back. T.J. Duckett will replace him.
RB Willis McGahee, BAL - Willis McGahee left the Seattle game early with what has been since reported as bruised ribs. It is unknown whether he will play in the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since the game means little to either team, McGahee will likely sit it out if he is less than full strength.
RB Willie Parker, PIT - Parker broke his leg on his first carry of Week 16 and is now lost for the rest of the season and all of the playoffs. Pittsburgh will be forced to go forward without the NFL's leading rusher, turning now to Najeh Davenport.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Adrian Peterson was held in check by the Washington Redskins in week sixteen. The rookie ran the ball nine times 27 yards, with a long of 18. The former Sooner also caught a couple of passes for 21 yards. The young running back has had a very impressive rookie campaign (1,673 total yards and 13 total touchdowns), but it looks like he's still not completely over that injured knee.
RB Fred Taylor, JAX - The Jaguars have locked up the #5 seed in the AFC playoffs and will likely be resting their starters next week at Houston. We don't think Taylor will sit the entire game, but he won't see a lot of action either. We don't see Taylor as a good start next week, so if you have him, you're probably best suited by benching him.
RB Leon Washington, NYJ - Leon Washington is not getting many carries even with Thomas Jones ineffective. The former Seminole had just one carry and two catches for a grand total of seven yards. Leon Washington is one of the biggest playmakers on the New York Jet offense, but it appears that the New York coaching staff is set on giving the carries to Jones.
Holding steady
RB Earnest Graham, TB - The Bucs have locked up their playoff berth and have already begun to rest their starters. Graham will probably not see a lot of action next week against Carolina. He reached his 1000 yards rushing in week 16 and Jon Gruden took him out of the game.
RB Brandon Jacobs, NYG - Jacobs had a career best performance in Week 16 against Buffalo, rushing for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. He could have had an even bigger day but he lost some time with a sprained ankle, but he was able to return to the game after it was diagnosed. Jacobs could be rested in Week 17 as the Giants have nothing to play for (they are locked in as the #5 NFC seed for the postseason) and face a tough New England opponent.
RB Jerious Norwood, ATL - The Falcons found themselves in a pass fest last week at Arizona, so there wasn't a lot of production from their RBs. Next week the Falcons host the Seahawks. While we don't think it's a great match up for Atlanta, Norwood should get an increase in carries in the last game of the year. We don't recommend starting him, but if you have to, he's not a horrible option.
RB Darius Walker, HOU - Walker started for Ron Dayne last week, who is out with an injured ankle. Walker rushed for 66 yards and had 6 catches for 44 yards. Next week the Texans face the Jaguars which is not a great match up. We don't recommend starting Walker, but he will likely start for Houston once again.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Devin Aromashodu, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Aromashodu could have increased value next week against the Titans if the Colts decide they are going to rest their starters. The former Auburn Tiger had three catches for 42 yards last week against Houston. The Colts have nothing to play for with the #2 seed locked up in the AFC. Keep an eye on this situation, because Aromashodu could be a good last chance waiver wire pick up especially if Anthony Gonzalez doesn't play to rest his injured foot.
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Reggie Brown benefited from Donovan McNabb's solid performance as he caught many short and intermediate passes against the Saints. Brown caught six balls for 73 yards and a touchdown, his fourth of the season. Expect Brown to have another solid game against Buffalo to finish 2007 on a strong note.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - Bruce has 159 yards and a touchdown over the last two games, and should do some damage against the Cardinals as well. Arizona gave up 100+ yards to two different WRs yesterday against the Falcons, and the Rams will look to exploit the Cardinals' secondary in similar fashion.
WR Greg Camarillo, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Greg Camarillo caught a touchdown from Cleo Lemon for the second straight week and certainly seems to be clicking with Cleo Lemon. The former Charger had two receptions for 26 yards and the score. Camarillo is one of several Dolphins who were with Coach Cam Cameron in San Diego.
WR Michael Clayton, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With the Buccaneers likely looking to rest their starters next week, Michael Clayton could benefit as a result. Clayton caught five balls for 71 yards last week against the 49ers and could have a similar performance next week against the Panthers.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery had a great game against the stout Tennessee Titan defense. The former North Carolina State star caught eight Chad Pennington passes for 119 yards and a scoring grab. He has played great since coming back from the finger injury that almost cost Cotchery the rest of the season. On the year, the 25 year old has 74 catches for 1,054 yards and a pair of scores.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton led all Cowboys receivers in Week 16 with seven catches and 65 yards. His longest catch was just 16 yards, but he was targeted deep once at the goal line but Tony Romo's throw was short and intercepted. With Terrell Owens sidelined with a high ankle sprain and the return of Terry Glenn still slow in coming, Crayton has to assume the primary receiver role and contribute much more for Dallas to be successful. Look for his targets to spike until a healthy Owens returns.
WR Kevin Curtis, PHI - Kevin Curtis scored twice in Week 16, but you would not know that from just looking at his receiver numbers. Curtis did have a nice game as a wideout, catching six passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, but he showed a lot of hustle when he chased down a Donovan McNabb fumble in the New Orleans end zone for a first quarter touchdown. Curtis also topped 1,000 yards receiving during the Saints game, and it would be safe to assume that he will try and put up a solid effort to close out the regular season against Buffalo next week.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards showed everyone why he is heading to Hawaii in February, as he converted 12 targets into six catches in Week 16 against Cincinnati. Even more important, Edwards scored two touchdowns, his 14th and 15th on the year, which set the all-time Browns TD reception record for a season. Edwards should look to keep up the good work against the 49ers in Week 17 as the Browns hope to be playing in the playoffs come January.
WR Jabar Gaffney, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jabar Gaffney has passed Donte Stallworth for the Patriots third receiver position. With Ben Watson out, New England ran a lot of four-receiver sets. The former Florida Gator caught a long pass for a score on a throw that should have been picked off by Schulters. It went right through the safety's hands. On the day, Gaffney grabbed five Tom Brady passes for 82 yards and the score. In the last five games, the ex-Texan has four touchdown grabs and three games with at least eighty yards receiving.
WR Terry Glenn, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Glenn has been practicing as of late but has had issues with his recovery effort. If his knee can hold up, the Cowboys may need him more than ever now if Terrell Owens' injury costs him more than just Week 17.
WR Ike Hilliard, TB - Hilliard will surely see more action next week against the Panthers, because the Bucs have locked up their playoff berth and have already begun to rest some of their starters this past week against the 49ers. Hilliard is a good WR4 or flex option this week as a result.
WR Santonio Holmes, PIT - Holmes got out of the gate fast against the Rams, catching an 83-yard catch (and somehow did not score, which is pretty hard to do). He was caught by St. Louis' Ronald Bartell who has blazing speed, so do not worry about Holmes' ability to be caught from behind. Holmes finished Week 16 with four catches and 133 yards but did not find the end zone. With Willie Parker out with a broken leg, expect the Steelers to rely on Ben Roethlisberger and the passing attack much more in the season finale and the playoffs.
WR Torry Holt, STL - Holt had a down game in week 16 against the Steelers, but should rebound to finish the season strongly against the Cardinals. The Cards are giving up 237 passing yards per game this season, and have given up a number of big games top opposing WRs. Laurent Robinson and Roddy White each had 100+ yards against Arizona last week; Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce could do the same this week.
WR Sam Hurd, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Sam Hurd got into the mix a lot more once Terrell Owens went down. Hurd saw five targets in Week 16 (four after Owens left the game) and snagged three of them for 50 yards against Carolina. Unless Terry Glenn can make it back on the playing field, expect Hurd to start opposite of Patrick Crayton and be the third receiving target for Tony Romo until Owens is healthy again.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Johnson continues to impress as he hauled in seven Sage Rosenfels passes for 74 yards, including a TD. He remains a must start for week 17. If he doesn't score a TD even against Jacksonville next week, we'd be surprised. Johnson has eight TDs in eight games this season.
WR Matt Jones, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - If you're looking for a sleeper next week, Matt Jones isn't a bad option. He had one catch for 37 yards and a TD against the Raiders, but with the Jags likely resting some of their starters, Jones might get more looks.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - Mason saved a rather bleak Week 16 performance with a great catch in the final quarter. Mason got behind the Seattle secondary to reel in a 79-yard catch and run for the only Ravens score on the afternoon. That reception boosted his numbers significantly (5-98-1). Expect Mason to play enough in Week 17 to get close to 100 catches on the season, as he has 92 so far this year.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Randy Moss is a touchdown machine as he scored twice on only five catches in week 16. Moss has now topped the twenty-touchdown mark and is only two scores behind Jerry Rice's 22-score season in 1987. The Patriots have a great chance at putting up big points against the Giants next week.
WR Santana Moss, WAS - Moss had a great night against the Vikings in Week 16, catching four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. It seemed that Moss was either at the goal line or at the sideline making a leaping catch on every other Washington drive. Moss certainly seems to have dialed it back in and is clicking well with QB Todd Collins. He will face the Dallas Cowboys next week, a team that might rest some players as they are already locked into the #1 NFC spot for the playoffs.
WR David Patten, NO - If Marques Colston cannot play next week due to his chest contusion he suffered in week 16, then David Patten suddenly becomes quite an interesting option. The Saints will be fighting for their playoff lives needing a win just to have a chance. Patten is a good WR3 or flex option next week if Colston is unable to play.
WR Antwaan Randle El, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Redskins are playing very well and they are also throwing well, which stands to benefit the second starting wide receiver. Randle El had five catches and 60 yards which included a halfback pass from Clinton Portis for a 15 yard touchdown. Washington faces the Dallas Cowboys next week, a team that might rest some players as they are already locked into the #1 NFC spot for the playoffs, so Randle El may have another productive game in Week 17.
WR Brad Smith, NYJ - Brad Smith benefited the most from the Jets putting Laveranues Coles on Injured Reserve. The former quarterback at Missouri collected five passes for 45 yards. The Jets are thin at the receiver position and the loss of Coles should give Smith more opportunity to get on the field. Fantasy owners need patience with young receivers making the conversion from the quarterback position.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Matt Moore and Steve Smith connected nine times for 137 yards and a TD last week against Dallas. It appears as if Moore and Smith have established some chemistry. That chemistry should continue next week at Tampa Bay. Smith left the game with a shoulder or collarbone injury late in the game, but he returned to action three plays later. All reports suggest he'll be healthy to play next week.
WR Steve Smith, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - If the Giants are resting receivers next week, look for Steve Smith to get a possible start in Week 17. Smith had a 50 yard pass hit him in the hands against Buffalo but he did not make the catch. The game against the Patriots would be a perfect opportunity for the Giants to gauge Smith's abilities at this point.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG - Toomer was the lone receiver highlight in Week 16. He caught five balls for 99 yards on a windy Buffalo afternoon. If Plaxico Burress needs time off or even cannot get healthy, Toomer will be the primary target for Eli Manning going forward.
WR Hines Ward, PIT - Ward is starting to become the safety checkdown outlet for Ben Roethlisberger, which is great in PPR leagues but not so much for most fantasy owners who want Ward to break a long one or score a touchdown. Ward is seeing plenty of targets and led all Steelers with six catches (59 yards) in Week 16. With the Steelers losing Willie Parker the gameplan may lean towards the passing game in both Week 17 versus a suspect Ravens' secondary as a tune up before hosting their Wild Card game.
WR Nate Washington, PIT -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Washington caught two touchdowns in Week 16 against the Rams, but these were his only two catches (2-50-2). With the Steelers losing Willie Parker they could certainly be looking to throw a lot against Baltimore in Week 17 and again in the postseason. Washington has posted five touchdowns this season, so if you need depth or are looking for a potential home run play, Washington could get some looks.
WR Roddy White, ATL - White had 12 receptions for 141 yards last week at Arizona, but he did not score a TD. The Falcons host the Seahawks next week in the last game of the season. White appears to be a good start and merits a spot in your lineup if you've got him.
WR Ernest Wilford, JAX - Wilford has steadily been increasing his presence in the Jaguars passing game over the last few weeks and may see an increase in looks next week while the Jaguars rest some of their starters. He is a risky play, but one that might be the right decision for your week 17 lineup.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX - Williams continues his consistent scoring with yet another TD this past week against the Raiders. He now has nine TDs in nine different games. The Jaguars will be resting some of their starters next week, but you've got to like your chances of Williams scoring, even if Quinn Gray gets some playing time in the game next week at Houston. Williams is a great flex starter for your team. He may be the flex starter of the year thanks to his consistent scoring.
WR Troy Williamson, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Troy Williamson saw action with Sidney Rice sidelined. The former Gamecock caught five passes for 39 yards. He now has only 18 receptions for 240 yards and one score. The low average yards per reception is disappointing given the speed of the former first round pick.
Downgrade
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe caught 8 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown yesterday against the Lions -- his best performance since week 4 against the Chargers. Bowe will take on the New York Jets this week, however, and the Chiefs will likely rely on the running game to attack a Jets defense that is much stronger against the pass than it is against the run. Hold your expectations for Bowe in check this week.
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG - Burress is not the same receiver that was the unstoppable force in September. His ankle and knee injuries have caught up to him, and while he is still seeing targets from Eli Manning he just cannot run the same routes or make the same plays. The end zone fade is not available to a WR that cannot leap, and that hurts Burress. Look for him to take Week 17 off to rest for the playoffs.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - has been placed on the injured reserve list.
WR Marques Colston, NO - Colston caught three passes for 16 yards before leaving the game against Philadelphia with a chest contusion that he suffered late in the second quarter. He did not return to the game and it's unclear if he will be able to play in next week's finale at Chicago. As of right now, we don't recommend starting him, but if he is healthy, you have to take the chance that he'll produce.
WR Anthony Gonzalez, IND - Gonzalez injured his foot in the week 16 game against the Texans. He could have returned to action, but the game was well out of hand. With the status of injured WR Marvin Harrison still unknown, Gonzalez may be called on for extended duty in the playoffs. As a result, he may be rested again next week against the Titans. We don't recommend starting him next week, because even if he does play, he won't play the whole game.
WR Marvin Harrison, IND - Wondering about Harrison's status? So are we. Right now, no news is still bad news. Not only may he not play again in the regular season, but now his playoff status is in doubt without any chance to get back to game shape. Harrison's injury and his recovery remains a mystery and the Colts are moving on without out him, at least for the time being.
WR Chris Henry, CIN - Chris Henry had just one target in Week 16 and with the passing attack struggling can no longer be considered a viable option.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - Terrell Owens scored early in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers but was forced out of the game in the second quarter. LB Jon Beason rolled over his ankle, causing Owens to head to the locker room for X-rays. Owens is suspected to have a high ankle sprain at this time, pending an MRI. No timetable is expected for his return to action, but the Cowboys do have a first round bye in the playoffs.
WR Sidney Rice, MIN - Sidney Rice was inactive for the Sunday night game against the Washington Redskins. He has battled a high ankle sprain and will likely not play in the regular season finale.
WR Donte Stallworth, NE - Donte Stallworth has lost the WR3 position to Jabar Gaffney for the New England Patriots. Against the Dolphins, Stallworth only had 25 yards receiving on two catches, and he has just six receptions in the last four games. Fantasy owners cannot depend on the former Saint in week seventeen.
Holding steady
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Bernard Berrian caught one pass for fourteen yards in a very windy game. He added a three-yard run. The breeze was affecting the passes for both teams. The Bears attempted just fourteen passes and the speedy receiver was not able to get deep against the Packers.
WR Donald Driver, GB - Brett Favre's favorite target was held in check by the weather conditions. Both of Favre's interceptions were intended for Driver, who ended the day catching just half of his six pass targets for just 32 yards. Next week, Driver and the Packers get the Detroit Lions.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - Galloway reached 1000 yards receiving last week and did not play at all in the second half against the 49ers. The Bucs have locked up their playoff berth and likely will continue to rest their starters next week against Carolina. As a result, we don't recommend starting Joey Galloway.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Houshmandzadeh validated his Pro Bowl status by finding the end zone in Week 16, his first score since Week 11. He finished with just two catches and 25 yards, but the Bengals will be trying to end the year on a much higher note when they face Miami in Week 17. Look for Carson Palmer and company to try and get a better ending to their forgettable 2007 campaign.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Greg Jennings caught only three of his five pass targets for 42 yards. This breaks the string of games with a score for the second-year pro from Western Michigan. With the weather conditions so bad due to the wind, it was tough for the speedy receiver to get open deep.
WR Chad Johnson, CIN - Johnson snagged four balls for 44 yards against Cleveland in Week 16 in adverse passing conditions, but the woes with the Bengal passing game go beyond weather. Johnson almost had a touchdown catch, but once officials came to their senses via the replay it was very clear that he never had a catch nor a touchdown. Expect the Bengals to perform much better against Miami to end the season.
WR Reggie Wayne, IND - The Colts have nothing to play for next week against the Titans and could very well rest Reggie Wayne for a few quarters if not the entire game. Wayne still may be productive in his limited action, but we don't label him as a must start by any stretch. Start with caution.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Chris Baker, NYJ - Chris Baker caught four Chad Pennington passes for forty yards, even though he has battled back injuries lately and was questionable for the game. This follows the eight-catch, 64-yard game last week. The former Michigan State star has played well since signing a new contract last month.
TE Chris Cooley, WAS - Cooley only had one catch, but it was a big one. He reeled in a 33-yard touchdown pass in the first half when he was able to get wide open in the Minnesota secondary. The Redskins seemed to focus more on the run with the lead in the game, so Cooley was not targeted much in the second half. Expect him to be a bigger part of the Week 17 gameplan, as the Redskins get into the playoffs with a win over the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has already locked up the #1 spot in the NFC so they may rest some of their players.
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Davis caught three passes for 30 yards and a touchdown yesterday against the Buccaneers. Things will get easier for him in week 17 against the Browns. The Browns' pass defense has been poor this year in general, giving up 240.5 yards per game through the air, and they've had particular trouble against opposing TEs, having given up 10 TDs on the season to tight ends. Look for Davis to close out the 2007 season on a high note in Cleveland.
TE Bryan Fletcher, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Both Ben Utecht and Bryan Fletcher may be good starts next week against the Titans. If the Colts do decide to rest their starters, you have to think that Dallas Clark will be one of those rested. As a result, both Fletcher and Utecht are good not great options. They are best utilized when Peyton Manning is QB, not necessarily when Jim Sorgi is under center. Fletcher had five catches for 25 yards last week against Houston.
TE Alex Smith, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Apparently the Buccaneers exercise resting their starters by passing to their TEs. Alex Smith had 6 receptions for 79 yards and Jerramy Stevens had four receptions for 73 yards, including two TDs. This is definitely something to consider when looking for a TE in your week 17 lineup. The Bucs play the Panthers, who are known for giving up yardage to TEs. Both Smith and Stevens actually look like nice options this week.
TE Jerramy Stevens, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Apparently the Buccaneers exercise resting their starters by passing to their TEs. Jerramy Stevens had four receptions for 73 yards, including two TDs and Alex Smith had 6 receptions for 79 yards this past week against the 49ers. This is definitely something to consider when looking for a TE in your week 17 lineup. The Bucs play the Panthers, who are known for giving up yardage to TEs. Both Stevens and Smith actually look like appetizing options this week.
TE Ben Utecht, IND -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Both Ben Utecht and Bryan Fletcher may be good starts next week against the Titans. If the Colts do decide to rest their starters, you have to think that Dallas Clark will be one of those rested. As a result, both Fletcher and Utecht are good not great options. They are best utilized when Peyton Manning is QB, not necessarily when Jim Sorgi is under center. Utecht had two catches for 35 yards last week against Houston.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow was open time after time in Week 16, but he struggled to get the solid numbers (7-73) he did attain against Cincinnati. Winslow is the second most favored target for the Browns, and that should remain the case in Week 17 with a nice matchup against San Francisco. Look for the Browns to study the game film from the Bengals contest and work out how to make Winslow more effective next week and then, hopefully for Cleveland, in the playoffs.
Downgrade
TE Alge Crumpler, ATL - If you forgot about Crumpler for any lineup possibilities, continue to forget him. In a game where the Falcons passed for 315 yards, Crumpler had only 12 yards.
TE Donald Lee, GB - Donald Lee caught one of his four targets for just two yards. This is his second straight game with just one catch. Further, this is the former Mississippi State star's third one-catch game in his last five games. Bubba Franks returned to the lineup so Lee's targets might be reduced going forward.
TE Randy McMichael, STL - Randy McMichael heads to Arizona this week to face the Cardinals. While the Cardinals have given up a number of big games to opposing WRs this season, they have generally held opposing TEs in check. They have surrendered only four touchdowns to tight ends on the season, and have yet to give up more than 60 yards in any game to a tight end.
TE Ben Watson, NE - Ben Watson did not play against the Dolphins in week sixteen after being questionable for the game with an ankle injury. The former Georgia Bulldog has only 32 catches for 351 yards and six touchdowns on the season and seems unlikely to have a big role (if he even plays) in the regular season finale.
Holding steady
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Clark will probably be rested next week against the Titans, but it may not occur until the second half. Clark had six catches for 60 yards and two TDs last week against the Texans. Start Clark with caution as he may only play a few series due to the Colts having the opportunity to rest their starters for the playoffs.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - Daniels is coming off a very un-Daniels like two-catch for 27 yards game last week against the Colts. He should rebound next week against Jacksonville and remains a good start as a TE in your lineup.
TE Billy Miller, NO - The Saints will be on the road at Chicago next week and the Bears have a very good defense against passes over the middle. We don't recommend starting Billy Miller next week, but if you absolutely have no other choice, he will probably get at least three catches.
TE Heath Miller, PIT - Miller had just one catch for seven yards in Week 16, but with the Steelers facing a bad secondary and a good run defense in Baltimore next week Miller could make for a nice spot starter. He also usually performs well in the postseason if the Steelers feature him in the gameplan, something Pittsburgh may do going forward with the loss of their feature running back.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Rob Bironas, TEN - Bironas will be kicking inside the friendly confines of the RCA dome this week. The Titans will be looking for the win to secure a playoff spot and with the Colts likely resting several starters, it could be a great game for FG attempts. Start Bironas with confidence.
PK Josh Brown, SEA - The Seahawks will take on the Falcons this week, who, in their last five games, have given up 31, 31, 28, 34, and 37 points. The Seahawks' offense should put Brown into scoring position frequently.
PK Joe Nedney, SF - Keep an eye on the weather forecasts for the 49ers-Browns game in Cleveland this week. If the playing conditions aren't overly harsh, Joe Nedney could have one of his more productive games of the season, as the Browns' defense has given up plenty of points this season.
PK Neil Rackers, ARI - Rackers connected on all three of his field goal attempts against the Falcons yesterday, including the game-winner in overtime. This week the Cardinals take on the Rams in what could easily be another shoot-out. The Rams have given up the fourth most points in the league this season against a weaker than average schedule.
PK Jeff Reed, PIT - Reed made all of his kicks (field goals of 21 and 29 yards plus five extra points) as the Steelers rolled up 41 points on the Rams in Week 16. Reed is a good kicker if the weather permits, and since Pittsburgh will likely not have another home game until next season he could be a nice option in both Week 17 and in the playoffs.
PK Adam Vinatieri, IND - With the Colts resting several starters, they may have several possessions that stall in the opponents end of the field, thus resulting in several FG attempts. Vinatieri could be a big player this week as a result.
Downgrade
PK Mike Nugent, NYJ - Mike Nugent has not performed well this season. He continued the level of play with a blocked extra point and a missed 51-yard field goal attempt. This is his second straight game with a missed field goal.
Holding steady
Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Chicago Bears, CHI - The Bears Defense looked like its old self this week against the Packers. The Bears blocked two punts, returning one for a touchdown. In addition, they intercepted Brett Favre twice, with Urlacher returning one for a score.
TD Cincinnati Bengals, CIN - The Bengals held the prolific Browns offense to just 14 points in Week 16. Some of it was in part to the windy day, but the Bengals did grab four interceptions and added a sack against a team that had scored 51 points on them the first time they met this year. Even better news is that Cincinnati faces Miami next week, so look for the Bengals to build on this game and finish the year with a solid effort in Florida.
TD Kansas City Chiefs, KC - The Chiefs will face the New York Jets in the season finale, who are 24th in points scored and 27th in total yards despite a weaker than average schedule. The Jets have also given up the sixth most sacks in the league this year, and are tied for seventh in interceptions thrown. Overall, this is a good matchup for the Chiefs.
TD Jacksonville Jaguars, JAX - The Jaguars are playing well in all phases of the game and usually that means the defense has a few good plays resulting in turnovers. Next week the Jaguars will be on the road at Houston with the #5 seed in the AFC playoffs locked up. They can't rest everyone on defense, so their presence will still be felt. Start the Jaguars defense if you've got them.
TD Washington Redskins, WAS - The Redskins held Adrian Peterson in check in Week 16, allowing the rookie just 27 yards rushing on nine attempts. Minnesota struggled all game and trailed 22-0 at the half as the Redskins capitalized on turnovers from Tarvaris Jackson. Washington forced three turnovers and added a sack as they held on for the victory. Look for the Redskins to possibly have another good week in Week 17 against Dallas, who has nothing to play for and may bench starters to rest them for the playoffs.
TD Seattle Seahawks, SEA - The Seahawks travel to Atlanta this week to take on the Falcons, who are on a five-game losing streak during which they've failed to score more than 16 points in any game. In fact, they've scored more than 20 points only once all season (when they scored 26 against the Texans in week four) and are dead last in the league in total points scored on the season.
TD Tennessee Titans, TEN - The Titans will be fighting for their playoff lives next week on the road, in the dome at Indianapolis. In a game that might see plenty of Jim Sorgi, along with other non-starters, the Titans will probably find some luck pressuring the QB. We recommend starting Tennessee next week as a result.
Downgrade
TD Indianapolis Colts, IND - The Colts have nothing to play for in their final game of the regular season. They will probably start sitting some of their defensive standouts at the beginning of the second quarter, if not sooner. Tennessee is playing for their playoff lives and will bring their all for the entire game. The same cannot necessarily be true for the Colts defense. We recommend benching the Colts defense this week against a determined and motivated Titans team.
TD Pittsburgh Steelers, PIT - The Steelers allowed Marc Bulger and the Rams to throw for over 200 yards and three scores against them in Week 16, and Steven Jackson had 65 yards on just five carries in the first half. Only the two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown by Ike Turner, made the Pittsburgh defense a palatable play this week. The Steelers do face a weak opponent to close the season (Baltimore) but New England and Indianapolis may do quite well against the Steelers come postseason action.
Holding steady
TD New York Giants, NYG - The Giants held Buffalo to 21 points but also caused four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble recovery) and scored twice as a defensive unit. New York added three sacks and could do well come the postseason -- but consider other options next week as they face the 15-0 Patriots.
