Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Todd Collins, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - How on Earth can you validate picking up a QB who completes only eight passes? Well, Collins racked up 166 yards in windy conditions and recovered from a very slow start for a decent game in Week 15 against the Giants, but the bigger reason is the schedule. Collins will be in the dome in Minnesota against the Vikings next week, a great matchup for passers, and the Redskins will have to throw often in that contest. Collins closes the season against the Dallas Cowboys, so he could finish strong the final two weeks.
QB Brodie Croyle, KC - Croyle is progressing as a quarterback, and had a good first half yesterday against the Titans. He finished with 217 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions -- the best fantasy performance of his young career -- and has a juicy matchup this week against the Detroit Lions. Croyle is not ordinarily a startable fantasy QB, but any QB facing the Lions becomes startable in a pinch.
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - Not only will the Bucs continue with their easy schedule to finish the year with this game being at San Francisco, but Jeff Garcia will return to his old stomping grounds. The only cause for some concern is if the Bucs running game is too effective. If that's the case, Garcia may have another "efficient" game with few pass attempts. We still like the match up and so should you.
QB David Garrard, JAX - The Jaguars and David Garrard have Oakland at home on their schedule next week. Garrard is coming off a three-TD game at Pittsburgh and he is really starting to come into his own as an NFL quarterback. Oakland has been good against the pass, because their run defense has been so poor, but last week Peyton Manning passed for 276 yards against them. The game is at home, so Garrard should have plenty of good opportunities. The run game may take over, but they will have more plays inside the red zone as a result and that is good news for Garrard.
QB Cleo Lemon, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Cleo Lemon led the Dolphins to their first win of the season. He had a good fantasy game against a banged up Baltimore Raven secondary. The former Arkansas State star completed 23 of 39 passes for 315 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown to win the game in overtime. The former Charger added 12 yards on the ground. Considering the motley crew of receivers the Dolphins employ, Lemon produced good fantasy points. The next two games are against New England and Cincinnati. The Dolphins should be playing from behind in both games. If fantasy owners have a week 17 Super Bowl, Lemon could replicate the 31-point game he had against the Browns in week six.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - Manning has a great match up at home vs. Houston for the fantasy championship game. Plus, he has been hot recently with 12 TD passes in his last four games. Start Manning with confidence.
QB J.T. OSullivan, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - J.T. O'Sullivan attempted two passes in the week fifteen game against the Chargers. With the Lions getting blown out, the former star of California-Davis entered just his fourth game of the season. He did not complete either pass attempt, but it is a sign that the Lion coaches might let the backup play some to see what they have in the former sixth round pick.
QB Chad Pennington, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Chad Pennington came on in relief of an injured Kellen Clemens in week fifteen. The former Marshall star completed 25 of his 38 passes for 186 yards. He was not that effective in leading the Jet offense against the Patriots. But, the weather was a major factor. Maybe the time spent on the bench did some good. With upcoming games against Tennessee and Kansas City to finish the season, Pennington could be a decent desperation play for fantasy owners if Clemens misses any time.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - Rivers was efficient in managing the offense yesterday against the Lions. He completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for 142 yards and a touchdown (no interceptions) before he rested his still swollen knee in the second half after the Chargers' lead became insurmountable. Rivers had been listed as questionable all week, but the fact that he played against the Lions without reinjuring his knee means that he should be able to play this week against the Broncos, whose pass defense has been generous to opposing fantasy QBs this season.
QB Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - Roethlisberger played through an injured shoulder and bad weather against Jacksonville at Heinz Field. He managed to complete almost half his throws (16-33-146-3-0) but did rack up three scores. He spread the ball around well to seven different receivers against a very difficult Jaguars defense, but Roethlisberger gets much more favorable matchups the next two weeks. The Steelers head indoors to visit the Rams in Week 16, followed by the season finale at home against Baltimore (who appears to have all but quit on this season after their heart-breaking loss to the Patriots).
QB Troy Smith, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Smith entered the Week 16 game against Miami in the fourth quarter once starter Kyle Boller left with a concussion. Despite his modest numbers (5-11-49-0-0), Smith led the Ravens to the tying field goal (at the Miami one-yard line) and also set up the Ravens for a field goal chance in overtime. If Boller is out in Week 16, Smith could get the start against a tough Seattle secondary.
Downgrade
QB Kyle Boller, BAL - Boller struggled against a good matchup (Miami) in Week 15, completing just 10 of 19 attempts for 159 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He was forced to leave the game after getting hit and suffering what was called a mild concussion, which may jeopardize his start next week.
QB Marc Bulger, STL - Bulger struggled against the Packers yesterday, completing just 51% of his passes for 217 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He will face the Steelers this week, who boast one of the better pass defenses in the league. Bulger's unfavorable matchup this week should have you looking for a better QB option to start in week 16.
QB Kellen Clemens, NYJ - Kellen Clemens was injured on his first pass attempt of the game, which was intercepted for a touchdown. The second-year pro from Oregon hurt his ribs when he was slammed to the turf by Patriot defender Richard Seymour. The former Duck was not playing well anyway. He has just one touchdown pass and five interceptions in the last four games.
QB Jay Cutler, DEN - Cutler had a decent game statistically last week, passing for 254 yards and a touchdown, but it was not enough to lead the Broncos to a win over the Texans. He faces a San Diego defense this week whose secondary is playing well, and who leads the NFL in interceptions this season. Shawne Merriman is expected to miss the game, but it is still a difficult matchup for Cutler.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Jon Kitna was playing from behind from early in the game, so his stats were aided by having 46 pass attempts. He completed 26 of those passes for 302 yards. But, the former Bengal had five interceptions to go with a pair of scoring passes. The veteran passer did not play well. The Lions had little run game due to being so far behind, and the Charger pass rush was able to focus on getting to the quarterback.
QB Eli Manning, NYG - Eli Manning is...unstoppable...unless you put him against the wind, it seems. Manning completed just 18 of 52 passes -- the 34 completions were the most in the Super Bowl era -- but to be fair he had to compete against the Redskins, the wind, and receivers who refused to catch the ball. His targets had eight official drops, but it sure looked like more in watching this game. Manning goes up against Buffalo and New England to close the season, so he is not a good start with additional weather and good teams to come.
QB Matt Moore, CAR - Moore beat the Seahawks in his first NFL start and he looks to be getting the nod again next week, however he'll receive Dallas and their strong defense in week 16 and we don't recommend starting him.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - Palmer struggled yet again, and this time you couldn't attribute it to the weather. Palmer squared off against one of the worst defenses (aside from his own) against the pass and could not move the ball effectively for most of the contest, finishing with average numbers (19-31-251-1-0). Palmer did lose a touchdown that should have been caught by Chad Johnson late in the contest, but the ball slipped through his hands. Palmer does have another nice matchup against the Browns in Week 16, but after this performance all his future starts are questionable.
QB Chris Redman, ATL - The Falcons are playing at Arizona in week 16. Teams have been successful passing against Arizona recently averaging 267.0 yards passing per game in the last three games, not including Drew Brees' 315 yards on Sunday against them. We're pretty sure Atlanta will be playing from behind in this game, so Redman has a chance to put up some yards, but in the same breath this is the same player who managed only 34 yards passing against Tampa Bay last week. Oh yeah, he played the entire game too. Ouch. Despite the somewhat favorable match up, we don't recommend hanging your championship hopes on Redman at all.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Romo struggled against the Eagles and their pressure and failed to throw a touchdown for the first time all season. He completed just 13 attempts (13-36-214-0-3) and had three picks, including one in the end zone. Romo seemed to be forcing the ball at Terrell Owens, which he had not been doing in previous games. Finally, Romo suffered an injured thumb in the contest. While he says it will be fine, any injury to the throwing hand can be a bit worrisome.
QB Sage Rosenfels, HOU - The Texans play at Indianapolis next week and that is not very good news for Sage Rosenfels owners. The Colts pass defense has been strong all season long. The only positive thought is the Colts may rest some of their starters if their playoff seed has been decided. Late in the game could bring more yardage, but we wouldn't recommend rolling the dice with Rosenfels this week.
Holding steady
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson did the best he could in the snow and wind, but it just was not his day as a passer. Anderson completed just nine passes for 137 yards as he suffered through the tough weather for a modest statistical day (9-24-137-0-0). Several of his passes were also dropped, which did not help his numbers. He gets two great games to close the regular season as the Browns face the Bengals and Dolphins next, so expect much better games from Anderson over the next two weeks.
QB Tom Brady, NE - Tom Brady had a disappointing fantasy game in bad weather. The former Michigan Wolverine completed 14 of his 27 passes for 140 yards and an interception. The weather kept the Patriot offense in check. With the season Brady is having, this game should not be held against him considering the conditions.
QB Trent Edwards, BUF - Trent Edwards struggled in the horrible weather in Cleveland. He completed just 13 of his 33 passes for 124 yards. He added a twelve-yard run. The rookie from Stanford did complete three of those passes for at least 20 yards. This game comes on the heels of the four-touchdown game last week. With the game against the New York Giants next week, Edwards should be given another chance. He is a young passer that could be the future of the Bills franchise.
QB Shaun Hill, SF - Hill had an excellent game last week, leading the 49ers to a win over the Bengals in his first career start. Hill will start the final two games of the season, as the 49ers hope he can provide the offensive spark that had been missing for most of the season. Hill completed 21 of his 28 pass attempts for 197 yards and a touchdown yesterday, but has a much more difficult matchup this week against the stingy Tampa Bay defense. As well as he played against the Bengals, we cannot recommend starting him against the Bucs.
QB Vince Young, TEN - The Titans offense has been a roller coaster of guessing all season long. Just when you think they are a running team, they pass well for four straight games followed by a strong rushing game, which is then followed up with a strong passing game. The bottom line is the Titans passing offense is not consistent enough to rely on. The Jets have primarily been a better pass defense team than their run defense, which should suggest a strong rushing game from Tennessee, thus bringing Young's value down.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Joseph Addai, IND - Addai should not have any speed bumps in week 16. The Colts will be at home vs. Houston. Addai has been solid all year long, and there is no reason to think that will slow down when he's needed most. Play Addai with confidence.
RB Lorenzo Booker, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Lorenzo Booker has been more involved in the offense the last couple of weeks. In the two previous games, the former Florida State star had a combined fifteen pass targets resulting in 97 receiving yards. He also added nineteen rushing yards during those two games. The rookie finished the week fifteen game against the Ravens with eight carries for 17 yards and was targeted eight times in the passing game. He converted the targets into six receptions for 60 yards. He is solidifying his role as the third down back for the Dolphins. Booker is a sneaky play in PPR leagues against the Patriots next week.
RB Samkon Gado, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Samkon Gado has stepped in for the injured Jesse Chatman the last two weeks. Against the stout Baltimore Raven defense, the former Packer and Texan rushed 18 times for 43 yards and one touchdown. He added six yards through the air on two receptions. This follows his two-touchdown game last week. As long as Chatman cannot play, Gado is a decent flex option for fantasy owners.
RB Frank Gore, SF - Gore had an excellent game against the Bengals on Saturday, rushing for 138 yards on 29 carries. He has a decent matchup this week against Tampa Bay. Although the Bucs have one of the better pass defenses in the league, their run defense has been below average. Gore could finish out the season strongly in his final two games against the Buccaneers and the Browns.
RB Earnest Graham, TB - We mentioned a few weeks ago that Earnest Graham owners will have a great chance at winning their league's championship. He has reached double-digit fantasy points in six of his last seven games and it should continue next week at San Francisco. The Bengals couldn't beat the 49ers, but everyone else has. Play Graham with confidence this week.
RB Fred Jackson, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Fred Jackson has been effective in the passing game for the Buffalo Bills. The former star of preseason rushed seven times for 16 yards, and totaled 36 receiving yards, catching all three pass targets. This is his third decent game in a row. He has solidified his role in the Bills offense. Jackson's ability in the passing game has meant fewer receptions for the rookie running back, Marshawn Lynch.
RB Brandon Jacobs, NYG - Jacobs had a good game on the ground, picking up 130 yards on 25 carries, but he did struggle as a receiver. Jacobs had only three catches for 30 yards despite 11 targets, which should give you an indication of how many drops he had (at least five balls hit him in the hands). Jacobs faces Buffalo next week which should be another favorable running game.
RB Edgerrin James, ARI - James rushed for 84 yards on 16 carries against the Saints, and continues to get the bulk of the work in the Cardinals' rushing game. He has a terrific matchup this week against the Atlanta Falcons, who have struggled to contain opposing RBs this season. Edge has an excellent opportunity this week to make his fantasy owners thrilled as Arizona will host a Falcons team that seems to be falling apart.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - While Maurice Jones-Drew hasn't been half as effective as his counterpart Fred Taylor in the past few weeks, he still merits strong consideration as a start against the Raiders this week. Start him if you've got him. You can't let this match up go without him in your starting lineup.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - If Justin Fargas can't play this weekend, Jordan could get the start for the Raiders (Dominic Rhodes could get the nod as well).
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Lewis seemed to love the slower track and bad weather, and he cleaned up in Week 15 against Buffalo. Lewis finished the day with 33-263 rushing and an 11-yard reception, leading all players on both sides for stats. He gets a great matchup next week in the Bengals and could certainly be expected to break 100 yards yet again in Week 16.
RB Marshawn Lynch, BUF - Marshawn Lynch had a decent game in tough conditions at Cleveland this week. He carried the ball 21 times for 82 yards. He was only targeted once in the passing game. The rookie from Cal has quietly had a productive season. He will rush for over 1,100 yards this season and he has a shot at 1,300 total yards. Lynch looks healthy and back from his ankle injury.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney was the primary beneficiary with the poor weather conditions in Foxboro as he carried the ball 26 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. His longest run on the day was eleven yards. The former Minnesota Gopher had season highs in carries and rushing yards in the game. With the Dolphins on the schedule next week, Maroney might get another big game in week sixteen.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - Portis ran early and often against the Giants in Week 15, racking up 126 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Portis owners should be concerned that he must face the Vikings next week who are very stout against the run, but Portis has to be in your lineup as you hope for a decent game (unless you have two better options).
RB Dominic Rhodes, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - If Justin Fargas can't play this weekend, Rhodes could get the start for the Raiders (LaMont Jordan could get the nod as well).
RB Kolby Smith, KC - Smith gained 105 yards versus the Titans (82 rushing, 23 receiving), giving him two 100-yard games in his four starts. He will face the Detroit Lions this week, making him a solid fantasy start if Larry Johnson is still out.
RB Fred Taylor, JAX - Taylor has been on fire in his last four games rushing for 100+ yards in every game. The fun probably won't stop there as the Jaguars will host the Raiders in week 16. Taylor is peaking at the right time and this match up couldn't be any better for the fantasy championship.
RB Leon Washington, NYJ - Leon Washington has big play ability - he took his first carry 49 yards. With Thomas Jones struggling all season, and the Jets long out of the playoff race, the former Florida State Seminole could get more touches in the last two games of the Jets' season. Washington finished the game with four carries for 57 yards and three receptions for nine more yards.
RB Brian Westbrook, PHI - Westbrook continues to be the central cog of the Eagles offense, racking up 81 yards rushing on 18 carries in Dallas in Week 15. He also added nine catches for 63 more yards, but what many fantasy owners will be discussion was his voluntary falling down at the one-yard line with two minutes left in the game. Westbrook denied himself of a touchdown to ensure the Eagles' victory, costing many fantasy teams in the process. Considering that he had 144 yards and that Correll Buckhalter was out with a concussion, Westbrook is a solid play next week at New Orleans as the Eagles remain barely alive in the playoff chase.
RB LenDale White, TEN - LenDale White has a cushy match-up this week with a home game against the NY Jets, who seem to be allowing 100-yard rushers like it's going out of style. The Jets have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in only five of their 14 games.
Downgrade
RB Shaun Alexander, SEA - Alexander rushed just 7 times for 17 yards yesterday against the Panthers, as the Seahawks relied heavily on the passing game. Maurice Morris got four carries, and continues to eat into Alexander's workload. The Seahawks face the Baltimore Ravens this week, who still have a stingy run defense. Alexander is not an enticing fantasy start this week.
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber had only seven carries again for the second week in a row, this time getting only 32 yards (as opposed to 43 last week). Dallas abandoned the run game in the second half despite a close game, and Barber also was not active as a receiver either. He is, however, the more featured back for the Cowboys and should bounce back going forward against the Panthers next week.
RB Correll Buckhalter, PHI - Buckhalter was sidelined with a concussion for Week 15 and was out for the Dallas contest. It remains to be seen if he can be ready against the Saints next week.
RB Ron Dayne, HOU - Dayne was healthy enough to show up for 67 yards and a TD against the Broncos last week, but this week the Texans and Dayne will be on the road at Indianapolis. This is not a great match up and we recommend benching Dayne as a result.
RB Warrick Dunn, ATL - Not only is Warrick Dunn passing the torch over to Jerious Norwood, but the Falcons aren't winning and they aren't making games close, which means their running game just never gets going. When it rains it pours and right now there is a dark rain cloud over the Falcons. Dunn is not worth a start next week or the week after.
RB Justin Fargas, OAK - Fargas had a good game against the Colts, rushing 26 times for 89 yards and a touchdown. But he has a difficult matchup this week against the Jaguars, who have a solid run defense. More importantly, Fargas suffered an MCL sprain, so it's likely he won't be able to suit up in week 16.
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - Don't risk starting DeShaun Foster next week. The Panthers will host the Cowboys, and Dallas will need this game more than Carolina. It is not a good match up for Foster, so keep him on your bench.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - Johnson had only eight touches in Week 15. He was just 7-16 rushing and added a seven yard catch against San Francisco. The Bengals still cannot decide which running backs to feature, as Kenny Watson had more touches than Johnson this time. With soft defenses left on the schedule (Cleveland and Miami) it would seem that Johnson is a good start, but that is not the case if his touches are so few. Consider other choices for Week 16.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Apparently it is mandatory for Dallas to start Jones in the backfield, and it seems that no one understands why. Jones had seven carries, the same as Marion Barber, but only five total yards. Jones' only value going forward is as an insurance policy for Barber owners.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Thomas Jones rushed nine times for 19 yards against the New England Patriots in week fifteen. He added 13 more yards on a pair of receptions. The former Chicago Bear still is under 1,000 rushing yards through fourteen games. With a tough matchup against the Titans next week, and Leon Washington outplaying the former Virginia star, Thomas Jones should be left on fantasy benches.
RB Jerious Norwood, ATL - Norwood actually looks like quite a fine RB, but the problem is he doesn't get enough carries, because the Falcons are rarely leading. As a result, keep Norwood on your bench next week at Arizona. The Cardinals have allowed only one 100-yard rusher in their last six games.
RB DeAngelo Williams, CAR - DeAngelo Williams was more productive than DeShaun Foster last week in the victory against the Seahawks, but that doesn't mean you should insert him in your starting lineup. The Panthers will host the Cowboys and the match up just isn't too inviting for good production. Look elsewhere this week unless you have no better options.
Holding steady
RB Steven Jackson, STL - Jackson had his best fantasy performance of the 2007 season yesterday against the Packers, rushing for 143 yards and a touchdown. and adding four receptions for 27 yards. He has a very difficult matchup this week, however, as he faces the stingy Pittsburgh Steeler run defense. He is still worthy of a fantasy start for most of his fantasy owners, but you should not count on another 100+ yard day against the Steelers.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - It did not take long for the Chargers to blow out Detroit, so the Lions as a team only had nine carries. Jones finished the game with five carries for 16 yards and two receiving yards. However, the former Hokie has a great matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs next week. When most fantasy owners have the Super Bowl, Kevin Jones gets probably his best matchup of the season.
RB Aaron Stecker, NO - Stecker had a very interesting 95-yard, two TD game against the Cardinals this past week. The week prior he rushed for 100 yards, but that was also against the Falcons. The Saints will face a much tougher Eagles defense this week. While we don't think Philadelphia will completely neutralize Stecker, he probably won't have a big game like his last two. Should you start him? If you started him last week and you reaped the benefits, go with him again, but if you're new to Stecker as a lineup finder, you probably have better options and therefore may want to stick with them, especially if the match up is better.
RB Kenny Watson, CIN - Watson had the most touches of any Bengals' running backs, yet it still was not much to write home about. Watson was 8-33 rushing and added four catches for a 20 yard total, which makes him a marginal play even in PPR leagues. Watson seems like the best option of any Cincinnati RB, and with two soft defenses left on the schedule (Cleveland and Miami) it would seem that Watson is a good choice, but unless is gets much clearer who is the primary back fantasy owners should consider other options.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe led the Chiefs with 5 receptions for 64 yards yesterday against the Titans. He has an excellent matchup this week against the Detroit Lions. Now is a great time to re-insert him into your starting lineup if you've been holding him out lately.
WR Deion Branch, SEA - Branch has generally been solid this season when he's been in the lineup for the Seahawks. He caught 8 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown yesterday against the Panthers, and has a favorable matchup against the Ravens this week, who have had a hard time covering opposing WRs this season.
WR Marques Colston, NO - Colston is having a great second half of the season. He has either scored a TD or caught at least eight balls in six of his last seven games. This past week, we accomplished both. Colston remains a must start, regardless of the opponent. Next week the Saints will host the Eagles. There is some cause for concern, because Philadelphia managed to slow down Terrell Owens this past week, but you cannot leave that kind of talent on your bench. Start Colston and don't think twice about it.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery is back and played well in the nasty weather conditions in New England. He caught six passes for 53 yards. The former North Carolina State star benefits from the injury to fellow starter Laveranues Coles. The fourth year pro is closing in on 1,000 receiving yards on the season. Fantasy owners should expect to see further strong play from Cotchery, especially if Chad Pennington remains under center for the Jets.
WR Devard Darling, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Darling builds on a nice Week 14 to get the upgrade here, as he caught four balls for 56 yards against Miami. Darling may be getting more work with the Ravens eliminated from the playoff hunt. He also has a good relationship with Troy Smith, who connected with Darling down at the Miami goal line (he was out at the one-yard line) at the end of regulation. If Smith gets the start in Week 16, Darling could see a good number of targets.
WR Donald Driver, GB - Donald Driver had another productive game against the Saint Louis Rams. He caught five of his nine pass targets for 80 yards. Only once since week nine has the former Alcorn State star not totaled at least 60 receiving yards. On the season, the veteran pass catcher has 78 receptions for 1,016 yards and a pair of touchdown grabs. This is with two games to play. He also now has the distinction of being the receiver on the other end of Brett Favre's pass that broke the career passing yardage record previously held by Dan Marino.
WR Ted Ginn, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Ted Ginn is being groomed as the receiver of the future for the Dolphins. Coming into this week's game against the Ravens, the former Ohio State Buckeye had three straight games with at least three receptions. But, against the Ravens, he did not catch a pass until late in the third quarter of the week fifteen game. It was the rookie's only catch on the day. The catch went for 14 yards. He was only targeted twice on the afternoon. With games against the Patriots and Bengals left on the schedule, Ginn could get opportunities while the Dolphins play from behind.
WR Terry Glenn, DAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Terry Glenn could return to action in week 16. If so, he likely will not immediately be a viable fantasy option, but he does at least merit a mention here.
WR Anthony Gonzalez, IND - Gonzalez is doing his best to fill in for the injured Marvin Harrison. He is really starting to gel with Peyton Manning and entering week 16, it's hard to call him a rookie anymore. He has done more for the Colts than what was expected and now he's doing more for your fantasy team than you expected. Continue to ride Gonzalez and his emerging ways. He should again produce good numbers with a good match up against Houston this week.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Greg Jennings caught another touchdown this week. This gives the second-year pro from Western Michigan twelve scores in twelve games. That is an amazing feat, especially for a receiver that is not the primary pass catcher on his team. In week fifteen, Greg Jennings caught four of his six pass targets for 66 yards and the score and now has 50 receptions for 878 receiving yards on the season.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Johnson has scored a TD in six of the seven games he's started this year. He is a must start in all formats, regardless of the opponent. The Texans are at Indianapolis this week.
WR Calvin Johnson, DET - Calvin Johnson cracked the century mark for the first time against the Chargers. The rookie from Georgia Tech caught five passes for 102 yards, with a long of 49. With Roy Williams out of the lineup due to injury, the rookie will be relied upon to make plays in the passing game. Next week, Johnson will test his mettle against the veteran cornerbacks of the Kansas City.
WR Shaun McDonald, DET - Shaun McDonald caught his first touchdown since week nine. The former Arizona State star caught five balls for 46 yards and the score. He has played well since Roy Williams was injured. The former Ram has had at least five receptions in every game since week eight, except one. With the inconsistent play of Jon Kitna, it is impressive how the 5'10, 177-pound receiver has been consistent and reliable for fantasy owners. He has an outside shot at an 85-catch, 1,000-yard season.
WR Brandon Middleton, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Brandon Middleton saw the field for the third game this season. The undrafted rookie from Houston caught two balls for 12 yards last week. In week fifteen against the Chargers, Middleton caught four passes for 32 yards and a scoring grab. He may see more time the last couple of games as the Lions survey their receivers for the future.
WR Sinorice Moss, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With the Giants struggling to gain yards via the pass in a very windy Giants stadium in Week 15, Moss led all receivers with five catches for 53 yards. Look for Moss to see additional targets going forward as the Giants give him some looks (and also try and give Plaxico Burress some much needed time off before the playoffs).
WR David Patten, NO - Patten had his second strong game in a row this week against the Cardinals. He has 13 receptions for 193 yards and two TDs in his last two games. He is peaking at the right time and is worth consideration in your lineup as a flex or WR3 or WR4 this week against the Eagles.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - The Panthers will have a tough opponent next week with Dallas coming to town, but Smith had good chemistry with rookie QB Matt Moore in his first NFL start. Moore found Smith eight times for 72 yards. If you're OK with that performance with the possibility that it could be more, than we recommend playing him. If you're in a non-PPR league and you're looking for more out of your WRs, then you may want to consider going with someone else. Smith was almost forgotten as a fantasy producer this season, but the strong game from Matt Moore may provide some light in an otherwise dim tunnel.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX - Reggie Williams is doing his best Cris Carter impersonation this year, in that all he does is catch TDs. Williams has eight TDs this season - all in eight different games. You have to love that consistency. The Jaguars will host the Raiders next week, who will have to travel across the country. The running game will likely be the main attraction on Sunday, but Williams is at his best in the red zone. Where do you think the running game will lead to? That's right, the red zone. Williams is a good start this week. Jacksonville may only have one TD pass in the game, but there is a great chance that it will be Williams with the score.
Downgrade
WR Arnaz Battle, SF - Battle had just two receptions for 23 yards (no touchdowns) on Saturday against the Bengals, and he faces on of the best pass defenses in the league this week in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This is not a good week to start him.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - Bruce bounced back from having been shut out two weeks ago, as he caught 4 passes for 72 yards yesterday against the Packers (10 targets). His matchup is tougher this week, however, as he faces the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. The Steelers have not been generous to opposing WRs this season, so Bruce is not a great option at WR for his fantasy owners this week.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - Laveranues Coles left early in the week fifteen game against the Patriots. Coles has been battling an ankle injury and reinjured it Sunday. The speedy receiver will be dealing with this injury for the rest of the season. He is a tough guy and tried to play through the pain, but right now, he simply cannot be relied upon by fantasy owners.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton had limited targets again in Week 15, this time catching two balls for 54 yards. Crayton is just not stable enough to play every week for fantasy owners, as he is the third best target after Owens and Witten for Tony Romo. He does possess big play ability and does tend to get open in the end zone, but he remains a risky play next week when the Cowboys visit Carolina. Also, there is a chance that Terry Glenn could play in week 16, so that would further degrade Crayton's value.
WR Chris Henry, CIN - Henry had four deep targets but only snared one for the Bengals against San Francisco in Week 15. The one catch was the best kind, a 52 yard touchdown, but Henry was absent from the stat line after that reception. The entire Bengals passing game seems to be in disarray, and until they correct it all the Bengals receivers, especially the #3 WR, have lowered expectations.
WR Torry Holt, STL - Holt had just 3 catches for 21 yards yesterday against the Packers, although one of his catches was good for a touchdown. He has a difficult matchup this week against a Steeler defense that has given up the fewest yards and the second-fewest points in the league this season.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Houshmandzadeh caught five shorter passes for 62 yards against San Francisco this past Saturday night, but yet again was absent from the end zone. Houshmandzadeh was frustrated all night against the 49ers and looked disinterested on the bench in the fourth quarter. The Bengals face another weak secondary (Cleveland) in Week 16, but it remains to be seen if the Bengals can take advantage of any matchup.
WR Michael Jenkins, ATL - Jenkins had a good game two weeks ago, but he and the rest of the Falcons receivers have fallen off the wagon. They have issues at QB and you cannot have good WR production if your QB can only muster 34 yards passing in the entire game. Jenkins was a marginal flex starter on deeper teams when he had a good game. Now he's off the radar completely.
WR Chad Johnson, CIN - Johnson had six catches for 78 yards in Week 15, but the night could have been much, much better for Johnson. In the first half, Johnson slipped behind coverage and was open for a long TD but QB Carson Palmer missed him by a good five yards. Late in the contest Johnson had a touchdown on his hands in the waning moments but the ball slipped through his hands. The entire Bengals passing attack was out of sync all night and for the second week in a row.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - Tony Romo was trying desperately to get the ball to Terrell Owens in Week 15 against the Eagles, yet it just would not happen. Owens finished with only two catches for 37 yards, and he yet again dropped another catchable ball. He still remains a must start despite the poor performance and should be good to go in Carolina next week.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG - Toomer failed to catch a pass in Week 15 against the Redskins. Toomer dropped an easy catch which could be attributed somewhat to the windy conditions in Giants Stadium, but his lack of any catches despite nine targets was a very poor performance.
WR Kevin Walter, HOU - Walter has been up and down in each of his last four games. Last week he was down, so this week he should be back up again. Don't use that same logic when deciding on your roster lineups. Walter has a tough match up on the road at Indianapolis and you cannot count on him to have a good game. Look for a better match up for your flex or WR4 this week.
WR Roddy White, ATL - The Falcons are falling fast and it's apparent that they have all but mailed in their season. While White has been a good start at times this year, we don't recommend hanging your fantasy playoffs on the hope that Atlanta will score points. This past week, QB Chris Redman passed for only 34 yards the entire game. That's not good news at all, regardless of the opponent. The Falcons will travel across the country to Arizona this week. It sounds like a good match up, but do you want to take the risk that Atlanta will somehow learn how to score points again? Don't forget they have a new coach who likely won't be as prepared as he would like to be.
Holding steady
WR Marty Booker, MIA - Marty Booker had his highest catch total and yardage of the year during week fifteen. The veteran receiver caught eight of his twelve pass targets for 88 yards. He is best used in fantasy lineups only in desperation. The former Chicago Bear had only 38 receptions for 430 yards coming into the game. Also, he has only one touchdown grab on the season. However, let's temper this enthusiasm and remember that the Patriots are next on the schedule.
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG - The Giants were playing in very windy conditions Sunday night against the Redskins, and Burress' numbers reflected it. He caught just three balls for 35 yards and faces another tough matchup (and possible bad weather) next week against Buffalo. Week 17 is not much better against the Patriots, so Burress is only a decent to average start.
WR Greg Camarillo, MIA - Greg Camarillo had great yardage on three receptions, the last going for the winning score. He had one catch for two yards coming into the game. Against the Ravens, the former Stanford star accumulated 109 yards, catching all three pass targets. He will forever remember as the player who might have saved the Dolphins from a winless season, but he's still buried on their depth chart.
WR Justin Gage, TEN - Gage was the best WR on the field for the Titans in a few games this year, but he's not quite at that level where you can count on him to produce good numbers every week. As a result, keep him on your bench against the Jets pass defense this week.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - Galloway had only one catch for 7 yards this past week against the Falcons, but the game was decided early and there was no need to pass. The same may happen next week at San Francisco, but the 49ers defense at home, might just be good enough to keep the Bucs passing the ball all game. Do not let his poor performance against Atlanta cloud your judgment this week. Galloway has been a solid fantasy WR this year. We don't think he'll be a dud next week. Start him if you got him.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Randy Moss was affected by the nasty weather in the game against the New York Jets. He finished with five receptions for 79 yards. With the Miami Dolphins up next on the schedule, Moss should bounce back nicely in week sixteen. The weather prevented both offenses from throwing the ball effectively. The former Viking and Raider did catch a 46-yard bomb, but the environment kept the big plays to a minimum.
WR Santana Moss, WAS - Moss had three catches for 75 yards and was the most productive receiver for the Redskins against the Giants on a windy night in the Meadowlands. Moss should see much more work against Minnesota next week as the Vikings are weak against the pass and tough against the run.
WR Dennis Northcutt, JAX - Northcutt had a good game this past week against the Steelers strong pass defense, catching four passes for 81 yards, including a 55-yard TD in the third quarter. Despite the big game, we don't recommend starting him as a flex or WR4 option next week against Oakland. Northcutt has been inconsistent this year and we aren't completely sure how effective he'll be week in and week out. Look elsewhere for your flex start this week.
WR Reggie Wayne, IND - Wayne was not his usual TD-scoring self last week against the Raiders, but next week Wayne should get back on track against the Texans. His good match up should equal solid point production in week 16.
WR Ernest Wilford, JAX - Just wanted to point out Ernest Wilford's consistency in the last few games. He had at least four receptions in each of the last three games entering this past week's game against the Steelers. While he did not reach four catches this week, he did have two receptions, including a TD. He's is quietly having a strong second half of the season. The Jaguars offense is very balanced, which means no one player sticks out. Wilford is just one of the guys making plays. He is not worth starting next week against Oakland, but we wouldn't be surprised if he continues to excel.
WR Roydell Williams, TEN - Williams turned in quite a game this past week against the Chiefs. He had four receptions for 94 yards and two TDs. He hasn't been consistent this year, so we're not recommending that you start him next week against the Jets. The Jets pass defense is actually not as bad as you may think as evidenced by their performance against Tom Brady last week. The Titans will likely look to exploit the weak Jets run defense with their strong rushing game. As a result, the passing game will struggle.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Chris Baker, NYJ - Chris Baker benefited from the insertion of Chad Pennington into the game. Baker caught eight balls for 66 yards. He lost a costly fumble deep in Patriot territory early in the game but rebounded with the solid outing. The former Michigan State star will eclipse his career highs in receptions and yardage this season. Chris Baker led the Jets in receptions and receiving yards.
TE Kevin Boss, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rookie TE Kevin Boss came in for the injured Jeremy Shockey after he was lost to a broken leg. Boss, a rookie from Western Oregon, stepped up and scored a touchdown as he had two catches for 31 yards against the Redskins. Boss should see a lot of work going forward as he fills in for Shockey against Buffalo and New England the rest of the season.
TE Brent Celek, PHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With L.J. Smith out and then Matt Schobel sidelined, Celek was the only tight end left for the Eagles. The rookie from Cincinnati stepped up and caught three balls for 50 yards. Look for Celek to get plenty of chances against the Saints in Week 16 as Donovan McNabb loves to feature the tight end in the Eagle offense.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - The Texans will be on the road this weekend in the dome at Indianapolis. Daniels should continue to consistently reach 40-50 yards. Earlier in the season he had 7 catches for 56 yards against the Colts. He's a good play this week as the Texans may have some good garbage yards at the end of the game.
TE Billy Miller, NO -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Miller had three receptions for 39 yards this past week against the Cardinals. He wasn't anything special, but with the injury to Eric Johnson, Miller received more playing time. We don't recommend starting him next week, but his presence in the offense will likely increase yet again as long as Eric Johnson is still out.
TE Heath Miller, PIT - Miller caught just two passes in Week 15 against Jacksonville, but he did put one of them in the end zone. Miller caught a tipped ball over the middle and reeled it in against the Jaguars for the score. He also dropped another end zone target, so that shows that Ben Roethlisberger is looking his way for touchdowns.
TE Stephen Spach, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Stephen Spach could start for the Patriots in week 16 with Ben Watson and Kyle Brady each hobbled with an injured ankle.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten has become the #1 TE in all of fantasy football this season, and it seemed even clearer this week with Antonio Gates struggling. Witten is a favorite target of QB Tony Romo, and he topped 1,000 yards for the season by snagging eight balls for 113 yards against the Eagles in Week 15. He is a must play against the Panthers next week.
Downgrade
TE Alge Crumpler, ATL - The passing game for Atlanta was horrible at best this past week against the Buccaneers. The Falcons only had four completions all game and Crumpler wasn't one of the four. Forget about him finding your lineup this season. Did Michael Vick make that much of a difference in Crumpler's game?
TE Todd Heap, BAL - Heap was unavailable to play due to a leg issue and did not play in Week 15. Yes, this is a recording.
TE Marcus Pollard, SEA - Pollard was shut out yesterday against the Panthers, and has a difficult matchup this week against Baltimore, who has done a good job of covering opposing tight ends this season.
TE Bo Scaife, TEN - Scaife was dropping in value before he posted zero receptions this past week against the Chiefs. Now, he is not worth rostering. If you desperately need a TE, look elsewhere.
TE Jeremy Shockey, NYG - Shockey only had two catches for 18 total yards before breaking his leg in the second half against Washington. Shockey was carted off and is done for the year, as his broken fibula will require surgery this week.
TE L.J. Smith, PHI - Smith was out for Week 15 with rib and knee injuries. His status for this weekend is unclear.
TE Ben Watson, NE - Ben Watson missed week 15 with an injured ankle. His status for this weekend's game is unclear, but there is no reason for the Patriots to rush him back until he is completely healthy.
Holding steady
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Clark has not been good at all in the last two weeks, but if you've got him, don't bench him. This week the Colts will host the Texans, which means there should be plenty of offensive opportunities to excel. Clark is a big part of the Colts offense and he should rebound with a strong game. That's what our thoughts are at least. If you have Clark and you're still alive, play him despite the recent shortcomings.
TE Chris Cooley, WAS - Cooley only had two catches for 34 yards for the Redskins against the Giants on a windy night in the Meadowlands, but he should see a lot work against Minnesota next week as the Vikings are weak against the pass and tough against the run.
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Davis had an excellent game on Saturday against the Bengals, catching 5 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. But we can't give him an upgrade because he faces one of the better pass defenses in the league this week in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs have covered opposing TEs well this season, so Davis will have his work cut out for him.
TE Antonio Gates, SD - Gates had only one catch for 8 yards yesterday against the Lions, as he was nursing a sore back that had him in and out of the lineup throughout the day. He failed to come down with two passes that were potential scoring opportunities (one in the end zone, and one inside the ten yard line that he could have run with had he caught it) -- neither were easy catches, but both were the kind of grabs that Gates normally makes. Another week of healing should have Gates ready to go against the Broncos this week, who have had trouble covering opposing tight ends this season. The Broncos occasionally tried to cover Gates with a linebacker earlier in the season, when Gates had 7 catches for 113 yards and a score against them in week five.
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC - Gonzalez had his worst fantasy outing of the year yesterday as the Titans blanketed him with multiple defenders. He finished with just three receptions for 17 yards. But he should bounce back nicely this week against the woeful Detroit Lions pass defense.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow caught only two passes in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills, but what more could you really expect in the snow and wind? Winslow slipped and fell on one target and dropped another, but things should get better going forward. The Browns face the Bengals and Dolphins next, so expect much better games from the passing game and Winslow over the next two weeks.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Rob Bironas, TEN - The Titans host the Jets this week and not only is Bironas leading the NFL with 31 FGs, but the Jets are fourth in the league in FGs allowed (27). Bironas is a great start next week.
PK Josh Brown, SEA - Brown faces the Baltimore Ravens this week, who have allowed the ninth most points in the league this season.
PK Kris Brown, HOU - Brown is among the leagues ten best kickers and he will be kicking inside the dome at Indianapolis next week. He's a strong start as a result.
PK Mason Crosby, GB - Mason Crosby had a great game against the Saint Louis Rams in week fifteen. The rookie from Colorado connected on all four field goal opportunities, with a long of 50 yards. Three of the field goals were from over 40 yards away. Also, he hit all three extra point chances. The former sixth round pick has produced at least seven fantasy points in every game since week eight. The way the Packer offense is playing, Crosby will be a great fantasy kicker the next two weeks.
PK Phil Dawson, CLE - In terrible weather, especially for kickers, Dawson had two big kicks in Week 15. The snow and wind were tough for Dawson but he boomed a 35-yard kick early which seemed to be just a few yards inside of his range for the day, but then he drilled a low kick from 49 yards away for his second field goal. Dawson accounted for all of the offense (there was a safety) as the Browns won 8-0 over Buffalo. If you have a big need for a kicker that also benefits from having two teams up next that should yield a lot of points (Cincinnati and Miami), take a look at grabbing Dawson.
PK Shaun Suisham, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Suisham somehow made three field goals in a very windy Giants stadium in Week 15, including a 49 yard field goal. Suisham's ability to get 10 points in such bad conditions bodes well going forward, as he gets to kick in a dome next week in Minnesota.
Downgrade
PK Jason Elam, DEN - Elam faces the San Diego Chargers this week, who have given up the ninth fewest points in the league this year despite a very difficult schedule.
PK Jason Hanson, DET - Jason Hanson had his worst fantasy game of the season, converting only two extra point kicks. The inconsistency of the Lion offense has made the former Washington State star wildly unpredictable. He only has two games in the last six weeks with more than four fantasy points. It is difficult for fantasy owners to rely on the former second round pick.
PK Joe Nedney, SF - The 49ers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, whose stingy defense will not likely offer Nedney many scoring opportunities.
PK Jeff Wilkins, STL - Wilkins has a tough matchup this week against the Steelers, who have allowed the second fewest points in the league this season.
Holding steady
PK Rian Lindell, BUF - Rian Lindell had no chances to score this week with the nasty weather conditions. He had accumulated 23 fantasy points combined the last two weeks. Fantasy owners have to give the former Washington State kicker another shot next week against the New York Giants.
Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Cleveland Browns, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Browns pitched a shutout against Buffalo, but certainly the weather (snow and wind) was a helpful factor. Even with the inclement conditions, Buffalo had just 11 first downs and 232 yards on the day as Cleveland shut them out. As the Browns face the Bengals and Dolphins next, it is quite possible that the Cleveland defense has a lot of upside.
TD Tampa Bay Buccaneers, TB - The Bucs travel to San Francisco this week and lately they have taken good opponents to the wire, average opponents to school and bad opponents to the wood shed. With the 49ers up next, things are looking quite good for the Bucs defense. They have 15 turnovers in their last four games, including a kick return for a TD. This unit is clicking on all four cylinders and it couldn't have come at a better time.
TD Arizona Cardinals, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Cardinals face the Atlanta Falcons this week, whose offense is last in the league in points scored this season.
TD Kansas City Chiefs, KC - The Chiefs' attacking style of defense could generate multiple turnovers against the Detroit Lions, who gave up five interceptions and a fumble last week against the Chargers.
TD Philadelphia Eagles, PHI - The Eagles held the top team in the NFC, the Dallas Cowboys, to just two field goals. QB Tony Romo failed to throw a touchdown for the first time all year and had three interceptions on the day. The Eagles added three sacks and gave up just 11 first downs to Dallas. With New Orleans up next, the Eagles face a good challenge but certainly no more daunting that they faced with Dallas.
TD Jacksonville Jaguars, JAX - The Jaguars will be hosting the Raiders next week giving them a good match up defensively. They sacked Ben Roethlisberger five times this past week on the road in Pittsburgh. With this game at home, there will be plenty of opportunities for defensive plays.
TD Green Bay Packers, GB - The Green Bay Packer defense has played well this season. In week fifteen against the Rams, the Packers sacked Marc Bulger four times and intercepted him twice. With Will Blackmon returning punts and Koren Robinson returning kicks, the Packer special teams are a threat to score every week. In addition, Green Bay has a very good secondary that creates turnovers.
TD New England Patriots, NE - New England Patriot defense produces good fantasy numbers. In week fifteen, the vaunted Patriot defense scored on an interception, had five sacks, and a fumble recovery. New England gets the Miami Dolphins next week, which will be another good matchup.
TD Seattle Seahawks, SEA - The Seahawks face the struggling Baltimore Ravens offense this week, who have scored the eighth fewest points in the league despite a generally weak schedule.
TD Tennessee Titans, TEN - The Titans host the Jets this week and usually their defense has good games against weaker opponents at home. Tennessee is fighting for their playoff lives and that is not good news for the Jets. The Titans have nine turnovers and eight sacks in their last four games.
Downgrade
TD Oakland Raiders, OAK - The Raiders face a strong Jacksonville Jaguars team this week, whose offense is gathering momentum toward the end of the season.
TD Baltimore Ravens, BAL - Here's the deal -- if you lose to a winless team, you get a downgrade. It's pretty simple, really, but if you had any misgivings of knocking Baltimore out of the Top 10 defenses before, this should settle that issue. Despite getting five sacks against the Dolphins, they failed to hold up in overtime and had zero turnovers for the game. To make things worse, Baltimore faces Seattle and Pittsburgh the final two weeks and may have to do so with an injured Ray Lewis (hand).
