Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Tom Brady, NE - Tom Brady was expected to struggle against the vaunted Pittsburgh Steeler defense. Well, that did not happen. The former backup to Drew Bledsoe finished the game with 399 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. He completed 32 of his 46 pass attempts. That is a 70% completion percentage against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the Jets and Dolphins next on the schedule, Brady has two great matchups. The former Michigan Wolverine also had four rushing yards on one carry. On the season, he has almost 4,100 passing yards and 45 touchdowns. With three games left to play, Brady looks to be a lock to exceed 50 touchdowns.
QB Todd Collins, WAS - Collins came on for the injured Jason Campbell and performed better than many expected. He showed poise in the pocket and comfort with the offense, running it effectively and passing almost as often, possibly more often, than if Campbell was still under center. Collins (15-20-224-2-0) will be starting the rest of the fantasy football season for Washington and has a reasonably good matchup against an injured New York Giants secondary in Week 15.
QB Jay Cutler, DEN - Cutler had the best fantasy performance of his career yesterday, completing 20 of 27 pass attempts for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns. He finished with a career-best passer rating of 141, and his laser throws showed of his strong arm, reminding some Denver fans of the John Elway days. Cutler has a positive matchup this week against the Texans.
QB Trent Edwards, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Trent Edwards had a very good game against the lowly Miami Dolphins in week fourteen. He hooked up with Robert Royal twice in the first half for touchdowns. Against Miami, Edwards had three first half touchdowns. For the game, the rookie from Stanford completed 11 of his 23 passes for 165 yards and four touchdowns. The Bills are now 7-6 and in the playoff race with the first-year pro under center. The next two games for Edwards and the Bills are against the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants. Trent Edwards only had one passing touchdown coming into this game against the Miami Dolphins.
QB Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - Hasselbeck has been one of the steadiest fantasy performers in the league this season. He has scored at least 15 fantasy points (220+ yards and a touchdown or 185+ yards and two touchdowns) in 12 out of his 13 games this season. Yesterday marked his best fantasy performance of the season as he completed 22 of 33 pass attempts for 272 yards and four touchdowns (no interceptions). The Seahawks are relying on their passing game very heavily (33 pass attempts to 28 rush attempts yesterday, despite a comfortable lead the entire game), making Hasselbeck a dependable starter with terrific upside throughout the rest of the fantasy playoffs.
QB Shaun Hill, SF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Hill took over at QB for the 49ers after Trent Dilfer left with a head injury late in the first half. Hill was sharper than Dilfer had been, completing 22 of 28 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown (along with an interception). This upgrade is somewhat of a formality, premised upon the possibility that Hill will get the start this week. Nonetheless, as the 49ers continue to struggle on offense (they are last in the league in points, passing yards, and total yards), Hill is not a viable fantasy option even if he does get the start.
QB Tarvaris Jackson, MIN - Tarvaris Jackson is on a roll for the Vikings. He has Minnesota on a winning streak and the offense is playing well. This week against San Francisco, the second-year pro completed 16 of his 25 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown. Jackson added 13 more yards on the ground. The next two games are at home against Chicago and Washington.
QB Cleo Lemon, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Cleo Lemon replaced the ineffective Jon Beck in the first half of the game against Buffalo. Lemon himself did not play well, but was able to move the ball better than the rookie. After coming into the game, he promptly connected with rookie Ted Ginn on a 54-yard completion that set up a 12 yard score by Gado. The former Charger finished the game completing 22 of his 42 passes for 241 yards and a pair of interceptions. Lemon also put the ball on the ground four times, losing one of the fumbles. Cleo added four more yards on four carries. With matchups against Baltimore and New England next on the schedule, fantasy owners should only start Cleo Lemon if there is a dire need.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - Manning had a very impressive game against the Ravens throwing for 249 yards with 4 TDs in little over two quarters of action. Manning started for just one possession in the second half and then took a seat with the game well out of reach. This is his third consecutive game of at least three TD passes and his second game in a row in which he has tossed four TD passes. He could have very easily had five TD passes if it wasn't for Ben Utrecht's knee hitting the turf at the one yard line on a red zone pass in the second quarter. Manning remains a must start and he is clicking on all cylinders as the fantasy playoffs are well under way.
QB Matt Moore, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Vinny Testaverde had a subpar game and Matt Moore saw some action in the fourth quarter once the game was out of hand. With Carolina now 5-8, they may decide to see what they have in Moore, since they are all but out of the playoff picture in the NFC. No decision has been made yet, but we would not be surprised to see Carolina rest Testaverde now that the season is all but over.
QB Kyle Orton, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Despite the fact that he's been running third team all season, reports have Orton moving into the starting lineup this weekend (since Rex Grossman is out for the season). With Minnesota on the schedule next, Orton could be an OK start in week fifteen as they have been weak against the pass this season.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - It's hard to summarize Rivers' performance yesterday. His final stat line looks middling: 21 of 40 for 228 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. But his performance was never mediocre: it went straight from horrific to inspiring, from Ryan Leaf to Dan Fouts. At one point, Rivers was 6 of 14 for 37 yards, no touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. But in the fourth quarter and in overtime, hobbling on a bad left knee injured at the end of the first half, Rivers' gutsy performance led the team back from a two-touchdown fourth-quarter deficit to an overtime victory, finding Antonio Gates and Chris Chambers multiple times for big plays. While his poor performance through three quarters is a concern, his late-game heroics could inspire the confidence he needs -- from himself and from his teammates -- to close out the season strongly. The upgrade, however, has less to do with his performance yesterday than with his schedule over the next two weeks. The Chargers face the Detroit Lions in week 15 -- contenders for the title of worst pass defense in the league -- and then host the Denver Broncos on Christmas Eve in week 16, who have also struggled to contain opposing QBs.
QB Sage Rosenfels, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Three TD passes for Sage Rosenfels against the Buccaneers this past week were very surprising. He impressed his coach as evidence by the following quote: "Sage has the desire and the goal to be a starter in this league," HC Gary Kubiak said. "He's always taken advantage of opportunities. He took a big step forward in his career today." Next week, Sage and the Texans host Denver. While there are better options in week 15, Rosenfels is not a bad play.
QB Troy Smith, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Smith came in very late in Week 14 (about three minutes to go) and led Baltimore to a touchdown -- but hold it right there. The Colts had long since pulled their starters as they were up big at the time (43-13), but Smith did throw the ball reasonably well (3-5, 33 yards). Smith scored his first NFL touchdown on the ground as he ran it in from six yards away for the score. If Kyle Boller continues to struggle, do not be surprised if the Ravens decide to give some playing time to their rookie quarterback.
QB Kurt Warner, ARI - Warner wasn't particularly sharp yesterday, as he threw a career-high 5 interceptions. But he still amassed 337 yards and 3 TDs as the Cardinals played catch-up all day against the Seahawks. The reason for the upgrade is that Warner will face the New Orleans Saints this week, who have been quite generous to opposing fantasy QBs this season.
Downgrade
QB John Beck, MIA - John Beck was taken out of the game this week after his ineffective play and a lost fumble that was returned for a touchdown by George Wilson of the Bills. The rookie from BYU ended up completing one of his two passes for a six-yard completion to Ted Ginn. He has zero passing touchdowns and three interceptions in his four games played.
QB Kyle Boller, BAL - Boller was just a mess against the Colts Sunday night in Baltimore. He threw three interceptions and struggled all game despite his completion percentage (76%, 19-25-132-1-3). Boller did not press the ball down field very much, and when he did his passes were neither sharp nor very accurate. His three picks led to early scores that created the Indianapolis rout, and Boller was pulled late in the game for rookie Troy Smith. Boller may not finish the season for the Ravens as the starter with this type of effort.
QB Marc Bulger, STL - Early last week the Rams expected Bulger to return against the Bengals, but he ended up sitting out his second straight game with a concussion, and is now unsure about when, or even if, he will return to the lineup this season. HC Scott Linehan has called Bulger's return time "indefinite."
QB Jason Campbell, WAS - The week 14 statistics are meaningless here as the real story is Campbell's knee injury. Campbell hurt his kneecap and will be out until at least Week 17, so if you were counting on him for fantasy purposes it is time to look at Todd Collins or another quarterback option.
QB Brodie Croyle, KC - Croyle had a rough outing yesterday, completing 15 of 20 pass attempts for just 132 yards and a touchdown. He also accounted for three turnovers, losing two fumbles and an interception. The Chiefs went three-and-out eight times yesterday, and averaged just 2.5 yards per offensive play. Croyle should not be in anyone's fantasy lineup during the playoffs, even in start-two-QB leagues.
QB Trent Dilfer, SF - Dilfer was carted off the field after suffering a head injury late in the first half. His status for this week's game is not yet known. Before leaving the game, Dilfer was unable to get anything going for the 49ers offense; he finished 7 of 19 for 45 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
QB Rex Grossman, CHI - Rex Grossman is out for the season with a knee injury. The former Florida Gator only passed for four scores in his eight games. He will be a free agent at season's end. The 27-year old former first round pick will need to prove he is healthy to get an opportunity elsewhere. Grossman completed two of his six passes for 14 yards before suffering the injury.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Jon Kitna disappointed fantasy owners once again this week. Roy Williams being out with injury did not help matters. The former Bengal and Seahawk finished the game completing 22 of 36 passes for 248 yards. With the San Diego Chargers next on the schedule, Jon Kitna is not an attractive option in week fifteen. It has been several weeks since Kitna has thrown for multiple scores in a game.
QB Josh McCown, OAK - Coming off of a very good game the previous week against the Broncos, McCown struggled yesterday against the Packers. He finished with 7 completions on 15 pass attempts for 110 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He was relieved in the fourth quarter by Andrew Walter after taking a hit from DT Cullen Jenkins on the previous series. Walter looked sharper than McCown had, completing 5 of his 8 passes for 38 yards.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - Palmer had a favorable matchup against the Rams but was unable to take advantage of it. Palmer did complete most of his passes (21-29-189-0-2), but he failed to find the end zone and threw two bad interceptions. He also certainly isn't a "mudder", as Palmer struggled in the inclement weather for the second straight week. Cincinnati stuck to the ground game to pull out the victory, but it was in spite of Palmer not because of him. Palmer does have a great matchup next week against the 49ers, but the same could have been said about St. Louis this week.
QB Vinny Testaverde, CAR - Testaverde did not have a good game against Jacksonville on Sunday. He was 13 of 28 for only 84 yards with 1 INT. He was later replaced in the fourth quarter by Matt Moore once the game was out of reach. We would not be surprised to see Vinny have a lesser role now that the Panthers are virtually out of the playoff race at 5-8.
QB Vince Young, TEN - It's interesting to see how the Titans passing game is totally dependent on how the running game goes. If the Titans have good success with the run, the passing game is woeful. If the running game is poor, the passing game picks up the slack. This week, the running game worked against the Chargers and therefore the passing offense took it easy. You can't count on Vince Young being reliable as a result. Consider benching Vince Young for a better alternative next week at Kansas City.
Holding steady
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson threw for less than 200 yards but did find the end zone twice against the New York Jets in Week 14. He has certainly played better in previous games, but next week's contest against Buffalo is a big game for the Browns. Expect Anderson to pick up the effort and produce like he had prior to this modest performance.
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - Garcia missed another game with his bruised back. Luke McCown started in his place and played well, but not good enough for the win. Garcia would be the better choice for Tampa Bay at QB and if he he's healthy enough to go, he has a great match up against the Falcons at home next week.
QB David Garrard, JAX - David Garrard led the Jags to their ninth win of the season this Sunday against Carolina. He moved the ball well, found the open receivers and did not make any mistakes. However, he has a tough match up next week at Pittsburgh. We recommend benching Garrard if you have a better option.
QB Brian Griese, CHI - Well, it looks like Griese is yesterday's news. With the injury to Rex Grossman, it was expected that Griese would become the team's start to close out the season. However, reports are the Kyle Orton will get the nod, so Griese remains the backup in Chicago.
QB Luke McCown, TB - McCown started for the second consecutive game for Tampa Bay while Jeff Garcia heals his injured back. McCown did not have a TD pass or INT for that matter against Houston and didn't win the game as a result. It is unknown when Jeff Garcia will return, but McCown has a good match up next week vs. Atlanta. If he has to start again, he's not a bad option if you don't have any better choices at QB.
QB Ben Roethlisberger, PIT - Roethlisberger tried to keep his Steelers in the game against the New England Patriots, but it was just too big of a task. He struggled all game and his numbers showed just that (19-32-187, 1 TD). Roethlisberger did not make any costly mistakes nor did he turn it over, yet he could not march his team down the field and put up the points to stay with the Patriots. He was without Santonio Holmes at least half of the game and New England kept him in check. The Pittsburgh passing game should fare better next week at home against Jacksonville.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Joseph Addai, IND - Hopefully you didn't bench Addai due to the tough match up against the Ravens tough run defense. He only rushed for 32 yards, but he had two rushing TDs thanks to the Colts getting short fields in several possessions. Addai also added a receiving TD to give him three scores on the night. Not too bad at all, considering he didn't see much action at all in the second half with the game well out of reach. His reception totals were three catches for 49 yards and the one TD that went for 19 yards. Addai is a must start next week at Oakland, but we didn't have to tell you that.
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber had seven carries for 43 yards but scored on two of them in Week 14. He also caught 10 passes for 61 more yards and also scored a third time, rewarding many fantasy owners. Barber is the best and most productive back for the Cowboys and should be used as such the rest of the way, starting next week against Philadelphia.
RB T.J. Duckett, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - T.J. Duckett made the most of his nine carries. He ran for 60 yards and a 32-yard score. In the game, the Lions utilized the size of the former Michigan State Spartan to pick up tough yards. He showcased his speed racing for the corner of the endzone on the score. The former Falcon makes a great complement to Jones. The Lions could use Duckett more in future games if the team wishes to run the ball more with the passing game relatively ineffective.
RB Samkon Gado, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Samkon Gado played much better than expected against the Buffalo Bills. In the game, he totaled 52 rushing yards on 12 carries and two touchdown runs. Both scoring rushes were from outside the ten-yard line. The former Texan and Packer also hauled in two passes for 41 yards, including a 35-yard reception. With the mounting injuries in the Dolphin backfield, Gado could be in fantasy lineups for the fantasy playoffs.
RB Earnest Graham, TB - Earnest Graham did not have a great ground game, but he still produced, scoring two rushing TDs in the loss to the Texans. He also had 45 yards on six receptions. Continue to start Graham; he has another good match up next week vs. Atlanta.
RB Ryan Grant, GB - Ryan Grant took advantage of the great matchup against the Oakland Raiders. He had 90 rushing yards and a scoring run just in the first half. He finished the game with 29 carries for 156 and a touchdown. Grant added six more yards on a pair of receptions. The former Notre Dame star turned 25 years old today. Ryan Grant now has four touchdown rushes in the last three games. Next on the schedule are Saint Louis and Chicago.
RB Brandon Jacobs, NYG - Jacobs returned from his injury and looked very good as he started against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite some fumbling issues and losing some carries to Reuben Droughns, Jacobs had 22 carries for 70 yards and added 11 more on three receptions. Jacobs did give the Eagles hope via an early turnover, but he played well enough to overcome the miscue. With Derrick Ward lost for the season, expect Jacobs to run well and get the bulk of the work next week against Washington.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - Johnson rushed 23 times for 92 yards in a Week 14 win over St. Louis. The game was played in rainy conditions which limited the offense to a ground first attack, which Johnson certainly embraced, topping 90 yards rushing for the first time since Week 2. Johnson should continue to be productive next week at the Bengals visit San Francisco.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Kevin Jones had a good game against the stingy Dallas Cowboys. The former Virginia Tech Hokie rushed 23 times for 92 yards and a pair of scoring runs. His longest carry was for 18 yards. He also added ten yards on the ground with one reception. This was a great bounce back game after the disappointment last week versus the Vikings.
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Lewis racked up impressive totals once again as he ran for 111 yards and a touchdown to seal the victory for Cleveland over the Jets. Lewis also added a second touchdown on one of his three catches in the game. He continues to surprise many who had thought that the former Raven was nearing the end of his career. Look for Lewis to continue to perform against a favorable fantasy playoff schedule.
RB Marshawn Lynch, BUF - Marshawn Lynch is back after missing time with the injured ankle. The Bills relied on the running game to preserve the lead against the Miami Dolphins. The former Cal Bear rushed 23 times for 107 yards, with a long of 11 yards. Lynch was held without a reception in the week fourteen game. He also lost a fumble. But we think those negatives will sort out as he works back into shape. The Browns and Giants are next on the Bills' schedule. Both are good matchups for the rookie ball carrier.
RB Willie Parker, PIT - Parker held on to the ball for the entire game in Week 14, an improvement over the Bengals game last week. Parker rushed for 114 yards and added 23 more on four catches against New England, but once again he was held out of the end zone. The yardage continues to be impressive and the opponent this week was tough, so overall it was a better effort than against Cincinnati. Week 15 against Jacksonville at home looks challenging, but Parker continues to be a must start.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Chester Taylor is still getting touches with Adrian Peterson back from his knee injury. In the week fourteen game against San Francisco, the former Raven broke an 84-yard scamper for a score. He finished the game with eight rushed for 101. Taylor also hauled in three Jackson passes for 23 yards. He now has 939 total yards and seven touchdowns in just eleven games.
RB Darius Walker, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Ron Dayne did not play that much on Sunday due to a sore ankle. As a result, rookie Darius Walker filled in and rushed for 46 yards and had six receptions for 35 yards. It's unclear if Dayne will miss any time with his injury, but Walker did a good job in relief. He is not exactly someone to count on, but he's a healthy RB that might get some carries that most assuredly is on your waiver wire. If you're in dire need of a RB, go ahead and pick him up.
RB LenDale White, TEN - White had 30 carries for 113 yards and 1 TD this week against the Chargers. The Titans went with more of a rushing attack compared to weeks prior and White was the main beneficiary. Next week at Kansas City is not a bad match up, considering what Denver did to them on Sunday. The Titans will be playing for their playoff lives due to the crushing OT loss to the Chargers dropping them to 7-6. We recommend starting him next week as the Titans will likely look to establishing the running game so they can control the game.
RB Selvin Young, DEN - Young rushed for a career-high 156 yards on 17 carries. He was used as the primary RB for the Broncos, with 17 rushing attempts compared to Travis Henry's 10. He has a favorable matchup this week against the Texans.
Downgrade
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Jesse Chatman missed the week fourteen game against the Buffalo Bills after missing most of the week's practice. He was listed as questionable for the game with an ankle injury, but was not active. With the strong play of Samkon Gado, the Dolphins might not rush the former Charger back from the injury.
RB Kevin Faulk, NE - Kevin Faulk did not get a carry in week fourteen against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the game, he did catch three passes for just 15 yards. This is his third game in four weeks with zero rushing yards. The former LSU Tiger has just over 500 total yards on the season and one receiving touchdown. He simply isn't getting many opportunities.
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - Foster and the Panthers could never get it going offensively against Jacksonville. To make matters worse Foster fumbled again giving him seven for the season. That's not good at all. As a result the Panthers may decide to give DeAngelo Williams more carries. You can only make so many mistakes. Foster is a risky start next week at home vs. Seattle. If you have a better option, we would recommend benching Foster.
RB Ahman Green, HOU - Houston put Ahman Green on injured reserve due to his knee complications, thus ending his season. Ron Dayne takes over at RB for the Texans with Darius Walker also in the fold.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Has the charade finally come to an end? Jones is the starter on the depth chart for the Cowboys, but let's be honest here -- Marion Barber is just the better back. Way better in fact. Jones had just eight carries for 29 yards and two receptions for 13 more against Detroit, while Barber scored three times. Jones is a handcuff to Barber, and that's it.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - Fred Taylor took another big step towards being the main rushing threat for the Jaguars and Maurice Jones-Drew is getting the short end of the stick as a result. If he can't knock in a TD in his limited touches during the game, he's not going to be productive at all. The problem with that is, he's capable of scoring at any time, which is what makes him a popular choice for your lineup. Good luck making the right choice with Jones-Drew. If you have a better option next week, you may want to bench him at Pittsburgh.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney struggled against the Pittsburgh Steelers after a good game last week against the Baltimore Ravens. The former Minnesota Gopher netted 18 yards on eight carries. Tom Brady was effective through the air and the Patriots rarely ran the ball. In fact, Maroney was the only back carrying the ball in the game. He only has 126 carries on the season.
RB Kolby Smith, KC - After looking good against the Raiders and Chargers over the previous two weeks, Smith came back to earth -- hard -- yesterday, gaining just 12 yards on 13 carries, and losing 2 yards on his only reception. Also, while the juicy matchup against the Lions in week 16 still looms, it is possible that Larry Johnson will have returned by then. Johnson was able to practice last week, although in limited fashion, and he still aims to return to the field this season.
Holding steady
RB Ron Dayne, HOU - With Ahman Green on injured reserve, Ron Dayne officially takes over as the Texans main rushing threat. Dayne was limited this past week with a sore ankle. It is unclear if he will miss any time next week against Denver. If he's healthy, he could have a strong game against Denver's suspect rushing defense.
RB Justin Fargas, OAK - Coming off of two straight 100+ yard games, Fargas was on his way to another respectable day yesterday before leaving the game with bruised ribs. Fargas carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards in the first half, but was forced to leave the game after getting just 5 carries in the second half. He finished with 15 carries for 57 yards (no touchdowns). Fargas expects to return to the lineup this week for a tough matchup against the Colts.
RB Travis Henry, DEN - Henry is an upgrade compared to where he was a week ago, since his suspension was overturned on appeal last week, making Henry available for the rest of the season. But he is a downgrade compared to where he was a few days ago. While some expected Henry to be the Broncos featured RB as long as he was eligible to play, he in fact played second fiddle to Selvin Young yesterday, garnering just 10 carries and no receptions (one target). He did manage to score a touchdown to go along with his 24 yards, but Henry does not look like a viable starting fantasy option going forward.
RB Fred Jackson, BUF - Fred Jackson outplayed Lynch in the week fourteen game against the Dolphins. In just the first half, he accumulated 80 rushing yards on just seven carries. For the game, Jackson totaled 115 yards on just 15 carries. He added six more yards on one reception. It looks like the back from tiny Coe earned playing time going forward with his play while Lynch was out with the ankle injury. However, as Lynch inches toward 100% health, Jackson's role will lessen.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson missed his fourth straight game yesterday, still nursing a foot injury. He did return to the practice field last week, however, although he was limited to individual drills. Johnson still plans to return to the field this season, and the fact that he took a tangible step forward last week is the reason for this upgrade -- along with the favorable matchup in week 16 against the Lions if he does return by then. Temper any hopes, however, since the Chiefs' offensive line looked particularly bad yesterday, and the Chiefs' offense in general has failed to manage much production over the past several weeks.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Thomas Jones had a decent game this week, but it was against the Cleveland Browns. The former Bear rushed 24 times for 106 yards. He added one catch for 13 yards. He now only has 944 rushing yards on 255 carries and the one touchdown. Jones is less than reliable for fantasy owners. With New England and Tennessee next up, Jones will have a tough time producing fantasy numbers in the fantasy playoffs.
RB Willis McGahee, BAL - McGahee ran 13 times in Week 14 against Indianapolis but only accumulated 45 yards on the ground (and also had a fumble). He added five catches but fared even worse for yardage (5-7 receiving). The Colts were swarming around the line and asking Kyle Boller to throw, which led to turnovers and short fields. McGahee left the game for a time with an injury but did return. Expect him to be more involved and more productive next week against Miami.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Adrian Peterson had an off game. He finished the game against San Francisco with a total of three yards on fourteen carries. Since the game was never in doubt, the rookie from Oklahoma was not relied upon to carry the ball more. In eleven games, Peterson has 1,200 rushing yards and ten rushing scores. With the Vikings in the playoff chase, they will utilize their rookie sensation more in the remaining three games.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - Portis struggled on the ground (17-36) against the Chicago Bears, but he made up for it as a receiver. Portis (6-86 receiving) turned a short pass into a huge play as he took it from near midfield all the way inside of the Chicago five yard line. The effort cost him the touchdown opportunity as he rested on the sideline, but Portis showed his big play abilities. He is a must start against the Giants next week.
RB Fred Taylor, JAX - Fred Taylor passed Eddie George on the all-time rushing list this past week against Carolina. He showed great moves and excellent speed against Carolina, despite being a ten-year veteran in the league. He is clearly the Jaguars number one rushing option and he's making the most of his opportunities. Taylor has a tough match up next week at PIT, so choose wisely. If you have better options, you may want to go with someone else, despite the 132-yard, 1 TD effort this past week.
RB DeAngelo Williams, CAR - Every week you wonder if DeAngelo Williams will get his chance to take over at RB for Carolina, but every week, he comes in off the bench in limited duty. With Carolina likely out of the playoff race, he may finally get his chance to show his stuff as a starting back. DeShaun Foster has fumble issues, which also might bring on a possible change at RB. This is all speculation, but sooner or later he will get his chance.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Bernard Berrian was able to get into synch with quarterback Brian Griese on Thursday night. The former Fresno State star was targeted 11 times, catching seven for 91 yards and a scoring grab. In the last four weeks, the Bears seem to be targeting the upcoming free agent more and more. He has at least ten targets in three of the four games, with the fourth being a matchup against the Denver Broncos. On the season, Bernard Berrian has 114 targets, 64 receptions, 883 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. For a receiver with Berrian's speed and ability, the low yards per reception average (13.8) is surprising. The former third round pick should have a good game against Minnesota in week sixteen.
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Reggie Brown caught seven passes for 71 yards against the New York Giants in Week 14, making defenders miss and collecting several short yardage throws. The returning Donovan McNabb liked going to Brown throughout the game, which certainly improves Brown's worth. If Brown continues to be a possession receiver, which seems even more likely if L.J. Smith is sidelined, his value goes up.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery surprisingly played in the game against the Cleveland Browns. It was reported that the former North Carolina State would miss the rest of the season. Not only did he play, but he played well. Cotchery caught six passes for 119 yards. Kellen Clemens relied on the young receiver to make plays. The Jet offense is void of playmakers and missed Cotchery while he was out with the finger injury.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Lee Evans caught only two passes against the Miami Dolphins. But, each reception went for a touchdown. One was from 70 yards and the other was from nine yards out. The former Wisconsin Badger had almost half of Trent Edwards' passing yards. These two scores match his season total.
WR Jabar Gaffney, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jabar Gaffney is playing well as the Patriots' fourth receiver. Against the Steelers, the former Gator caught seven Tom Brady passes for 122 yards and a 56-yard scoring grab off of a flea flicker. This makes three straight games for Gaffney with a touchdown grab. The 27 year old pass catcher benefits from defenses concentrating on Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Donte Stallworth.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - Galloway had six receptions for 87 yards on Sunday against the Texans. He has performed well with Garcia at QB as well as Luke McCown. Continue to start him with confidence as your WR2 or WR3 next week when the Bucs host the Falcons.
WR Ted Ginn, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Ted Ginn hauled in a 54-yard pass after Cleo Lemon entered the game. The rookie from Ohio State caught four passes for 67 yards. The Dolphins ran several plays just for Ginn in order to try to spring a long play. The speedy rookie also fumbled twice, losing one, but it still looks as though the Dolphins want their first round pick to be the primary receiver.
WR Anthony Gonzalez, IND - Gonzalez took advantage of a weak Ravens secondary due to injuries to Samari Rolle and Chris McAllister. Gonzalez finished the game with five catches for 124 yards with 2 TDs in the win over the Ravens. Gonzalez is an excellent start with Marvin Harrison likely not returning until the playoffs or at best, week 17.
WR Derek Hagan, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Derek Hagan played very well after Cleo Lemon replaced Jon Beck. He finished the game against the Buffalo Bills with eight receptions for 93 yards, with a long of 21. The second-year receiver from Arizona State started with Marty Booker inactive. He only had sixteen receptions coming into the game. For desperate fantasy owners, Hagan could be a flex starter next week against the Ravens if Booker is out again.
WR Devin Hester, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Devin Hester saw a lot of action in the Thursday night game against the Washington Redskins. After only seeing 20 passing targets coming into the game, the former Hurricane was targeted eight times, with five receptions for 67 yards. The Chicago Bears seem intent on finding ways to utilize the skills of the former second round pick.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Greg Jennings scored again. This time from 80 yards away. He finished the game with just two catches, but totaled 100 receiving yards in the game against the Raiders. Jennings still has as many touchdown receptions as games played ... which is an amazing feat for anyone not named Randy Moss. With the Rams and Bears next up, Jennings is a must-start for the fantasy playoffs.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Another game, another Andre Johnson TD. This week he had only 82 yards, but he caught nine balls and scored a TD in the first quarter. Keep starting him and reaping the benefits. Johnson is a very reliable fantasy producer every week no matter what he's playing or who his QB is.
WR Brandon Marshall, DEN - Marshall had the best fantasy performance of his career yesterday, catching 10 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns (13 targets). Marshall has established himself as the Broncos go-to receiver in the passing game, and should be considered an every-week fantasy starter going forward. Do keep an eye on this week's injury updates, however, as Marshall left the game late in the contest in apparent pain.
WR Shaun McDonald, DET - Shaun McDonald stepped into the void left by the injury to Roy Williams. He has really come on this season. The ex-Ram caught eight Jon Kitna passes for 96 yards. His longest grab was for 19 yards. The former Arizona State star surprisingly has a good shot at 1,000 receiving yards on the season. McDonald has 800 yards and could easily eclipse the 1,000 mark for the first time in his career.
WR Antwaan Randle El, WAS - Randle El was the most productive Redskin receiver in Week 14, hauling in four balls for 60 yards against the Chicago Bears. With Randle El playing better than Santana Moss and putting up more consistency, adding him to your fantasy team for depth might be a decent move.
WR Jerheme Urban, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Urban had a career game yesterday, catching 6 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown (7 targets). With Larry Fitzgerald (playing despite a groin injury) and Anquan Boldin (inactive due to a dislocated toe), it was Jerheme Urban who became the Cardinals' most dangerous receiver on the day. While he has decent size (6-3, 212), Urban lacks deep speed; but yesterday he showed a knack for finding the soft spots in a zone. With his stellar performance yesterday, Urban has probably earned more playing time going forward.
WR Kevin Walter, HOU - Kevin Walter is still very much a part of the Texans passing game. He may not be the main threat, but Rosenfels has confidence in him and that's a good thing. Next week the Texans host Denver. Champ Bailey should be covering Andre Johnson, which might mean more looks than average for Kevin Walter. He's a good start at your flex position or WR4 next week as a result.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX - Reggie caught his 7th TD of the season - all in seven different games. He's is a very reliable fantasy starter this season and merits a start in your lineup either as a WR4 or flex player. This week against Carolina he had five catches for 90 yards, including a 22-yard TD strike in the first quarter.
Downgrade
WR Dwayne Bowe, KC - Bowe is suffering along with the rest of the Chiefs' offense (save Tony Gonzalez) during their late-season slump. For the third straight game, Bowe failed to get 70 yards or a touchdown yesterday as he finished with just 2 catches for 35 yards on six targets. While Bowe is still the 22nd-ranked fantasy WR on the season, it is hard to start him with confidence with the Chiefs' overall offensive production in the dumps lately.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - Bruce played a full game yesterday, but was held without a catch for the first time since the 2003 season. He has had a disappointing season in general this year, going over 100 yards just once (in week two), and catching just three touchdowns on the year. He cannot be started with confidence going forward.
WR Justin Gage, TEN - Justin Gage owners aren't too happy after his one catch for 12 yards performance against the Texans on Sunday. The Titans relied heavily on the running game and the passing game took a hit as a result. You Gage owners, if you're still alive in the playoffs, should look to an alternative option at your WR4 or flex position next week, because you can't rely on the Titans passing game when their main objective is to run the ball. If they have success at running the ball, you can bet their passing game will suffer.
WR Marvin Harrison, IND - With the Steelers loss and the Patriots win, the Colts have virtually locked up the #2 seed in the AFC. We would not be surprised if Marvin Harrison didn't see any action until week 17 or possibly the second round of the playoffs, thanks to the bye week. Harrison would benefit from seeing some game action, just to get his conditioning back to game shape. Unfortunately Dungy and the Colts may not want to risk him getting hurt in an otherwise meaningless game. It's not looking good for any Harrison production this fantasy season.
WR Muhsin Muhammad, CHI - Muhsin Muhammad is not incorporated much in the Chicago Bear offense. Since week three, the former Panther has not had more than seven pass targets in any one game. His season totals are 35 receptions on 71 targets, for 511 yards and three touchdowns. A possession receiver catching less than half his targets is not good. In the week fifteen game against the Washington Redskins, Muhammad caught four of his five targets for 27 yards. Just like the rest of the season for the veteran receiver, his yards per reception average has been especially poor. Seven yards per catch is not good at all for the veteran receiver who used to be a big playmaker.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Smith gets a lot of looks in the Carolina offense, but with the playoffs likely out of the picture the Panthers may look to rookie Matt Moore at QB to give Vinny Testaverde and his 44-year old legs and arms a rest. Matt Moore entered the game for Carolina once the game against Jacksonville was out of hand and didn't do much. We would not be surprised to see Smith get a drop off in looks going forward, especially if Matt Moore sees more action. Seattle is Carolina's next opponent and the last time they saw Steve Smith was in the NFC Championship game two years ago and they did a great job of shutting him down. If you have a better option we recommend benching Smith next week.
WR Donte Stallworth, NE - Donte Stallworth continues to be inconsistent. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week fourteen, the Tennessee Volunteer had just nine yards receiving on just one catch. Week seven was the last time Stallworth scored at least ten fantasy points in a game. The ex-Saint has 41 receptions for 640 yards and three touchdowns on the season. If this trend continues, Stallworth will continue to lose targets to Jabar Gaffney.
WR Javon Walker, DEN - After playing ineffectively in weeks 12 and 13, Walker was inactive for yesterday's game -- and was not missed. Brandon Marshall has assumed the role of the Broncos' top receiving threat, and Walker need not be rushed back to action. Moreover, with a huge signing bonus due before the start of the 2008 season, Walker's future with the Broncos is open to doubt.
WR Roydell Williams, TEN - With the Titans ground game being the main offensive attack, the passing game takes a hit as a result. The lack in passing yards means Roydell Williams' value drops. We don't recommend starting Williams any time soon.
Holding steady
WR Ike Hilliard, TB - Hilliard had three receptions for 28 yards against the Texans this week. He was questionable entering the game with a sore knee, but he started and didn't have that much of a presence in the offense. Next week's opponent is Atlanta, so things might change for the better, but it's far from a guarantee. Hilliard has been a good start in PPR leagues this year, but he has declined in value over the last few weeks. If you have a better option, we recommend starting someone else.
WR Santonio Holmes, PIT - Holmes struggled to stay on the field against New England in Week 14, catching just one pass for 13 yards. It was clear that he was not fully healthy and that cost him some playing time. Check the injury and practice reports before using him next week.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Houshmandzadeh managed to grab eight balls in Week 14 against the Rams but he only had 52 yards on the day (and a fumble). The Bengals passing attack struggled in the rain, so consider it a bad day all around for Carson Palmer and company. Look for a better performance next week against the 49ers.
WR Chad Johnson, CIN - Johnson only had two catches in Week 14 against the Rams, most of which coming on a 52 yard strike from Carson Palmer. Consider the weak effort as partly due to the bad weather and some due to Palmer having an off day. Look for Johnson to bounce back next week against a porous San Francisco secondary.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - Mason had three catches for 30 yards in Week 14 against the Indianapolis Colts. Kyle Boller struggled and his receivers suffered along with him, but look for Mason to put up a better performance next week against the Dolphins.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - Owens had just three catches for 21 yards against Detroit, and he had another case of the dropsies in Week 14. Tony Romo still gives him plenty of looks, however, and with Jason Witten doing most of the receiving for Dallas it was just not Owens' turn against the Lions. Expect Owens to do much better against a team he loves to beat next week as the Eagles go to Texas.
WR Reggie Wayne, IND - Wayne had only two catches for 42 yards, but his 34-yard TD catch in the first quarter was just one of the Colts five TDs in the first half of the game against Baltimore. He was rested on the bench for most of the second half. While his stats weren't great, he remains a must start every week.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Desmond Clark, CHI - Desmond Clark had another good game on Thursday night. With Minnesota next on the schedule, the veteran tight end could have another good game. The veteran tight end has been solid this season. He has been targeted 61 times, catching 41 passes, for 523 yards and three scores. Surprisingly, he is currently producing at a fantasy starting tight end clip. Clark has a decent chance to surpass last year's production, which netted him a TE8 ranking.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - Owen Daniels may have only had three catches for 20 yards against the Bucs, but he caught his second TD of the season. He remains a strong start at the TE position next week against Denver and the rest of the season.
TE Tony Gonzalez, KC - Gonzalez was the lone bright spot for the Chiefs yesterday, catching 7 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets. Gonzalez left the game at one point in apparent pain, but later returned and showed no adverse effects. Gonzalez has been targeted 23 times in the past two games, and is the focal point of the Chiefs offense: a must-start in the fantasy playoffs assuming you don't also have Antonio Gates or Jason Witten on your roster.
TE Donald Lee, GB - Donald Lee is back. He had a great fourth quarter catch and run for a score from 46 yards away. He finished the game with four receptions for 71 yards and the score. Lee played well and Brett Favre looked to him often. Donald Lee finished the game with the most catches of any Packer in the game. He is a favorite of Brett Favre.
TE Sean McHugh, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Sean McHugh played surprisingly well this week. The former Penn State star hauled in three passes for 60 yards, including a long of 35 yards. On that catch, he made a great move hurdling a defender and showed unexpected speed for a big guy. The Lion tight end only had eleven catches coming into the game, but looked to be a part of the offense in the game against the Dallas Cowboys.
TE Greg Olsen, CHI - Greg Olsen plays great with Brian Griese under center. In the week fifteen game against the Redskins, the rookie from Miami was targeted eight times, catching only three for 31 yards. But, the athletic tight end is well targeted by the veteran passer, Griese. He has played his best football with the former Michigan star under center. On the season Olsen has 34 receptions on 54 targets, for 346 yards and a pair of touchdown catches.
TE Robert Royal, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Robert Royal had a career game. He caught two first half touchdowns. Against the Dolphins, Royal totaled three catches for 46 yards and the pair of scores. This follows a four-catch game in week thirteen. The former LSU Tiger should be considered by desperate fantasy owners needing a tight end in week fifteen. The Bills play the Browns next week and Royal could have another decent game.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten had a career day against Detroit, catching 15 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. It was a career high for Witten, and Peter King told him later that it was the most catches ever by a tight end in the NFL. He nearly cost the Cowboys as he fumbled at the goal line, only to respond later with a touchdown catch. Witten is peaking at just the right time for fantasy owners. Look for the favorite target of Tony Romo to continue to look for him next week against the Eagles.
Downgrade
TE Bo Scaife, TEN - With the Titans passing game suffering due to the strong play of the rushing attack, Bo Scaife's value takes a hit. We don't recommend starting Scaife with an unreliable passing game.
TE Jeremy Shockey, NYG - Shockey had just one catch for four yards in Week 14 against the Eagles. Even though he was open in the end zone for a touchdown (QB Eli Manning threw it poorly towards him), his lack of production this week has to be a concern. Shockey has not visited the end zone enough this season but is still a fantasy TE1. Overall consider his stock falling.
TE L.J. Smith, PHI - Smith had just one catch for eight yards in Week 14 against the Giants, but to make matters worse it appeared that he came down with a right knee injury. Check the news this week, but start shopping for a replacement if you own Smith.
Holding steady
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Clark had a sub-par game against the Ravens. He simply did not have his number called this week, despite the big game from Peyton Manning and the Colts offense. Don't let this game change your opinion of Clark. If you Clark owners are still alive in the playoffs, continue to play him and hope he rebounds with another strong game that we know he is capable of.
TE Daniel Graham, DEN - Graham showed excellent athleticism as a receiver yesterday, catching all three of his targets for 55 yards and a touchdown. He is still the second option in the passing game from the Broncos' TE position, however, as Tony Scheffler has gotten more targets than Graham in each of the Broncos' last 9 games.
TE Delanie Walker, SF - Walker led the 49ers yesterday with 6 receptions for 66 yards. The bulk of his production, however, came in garbage time on underneath routes that the Vikings were not defending in their prevent defense. Vernon Davis is still the primary weapon at TE for the 49ers.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK David Akers, PHI - Akers connected from 29 and 39 yards for two field goals in Week 14 and barely missed a huge 57-yard attempt at the end of the game that hit the upright. The kick had plenty of leg as it hit halfway up the right post, so if your league rewards long kicks, look to grab him. Expect Akers to see more attempts against Dallas in Week 15.
PK Robbie Gould, CHI - Robbie Gould has now made three field goals each of the last four games. He is 12 for 13 on field goal opportunities during this span. The former Penn State star seems to be benefiting from the increase of the offensive production by the Bear offense. In week fourteen against the Redskins, Gould made three field goals inside of thirty yards out and missed another attempt in the first half. He also converted his one extra point chance.
PK Shayne Graham, CIN - Graham kicked quite well in the rain against the Rams in Week 14. Graham connected on all of his kicks including four field goals against St. Louis with a long of 46 yards. Graham should have better conditions next week against San Francisco.
PK Josh Scobee, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Scobee is 10 for 11 in FG attempts and 12 for 12 in PATs in his last four games. That's an average of 10.5 points per game in that span.
PK Lawrence Tynes, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Tynes put 10 points up on the board for the Giants against Philadelphia in Week 14. Even though all three of his field goals were inside of 30 yards, converting all of your attempts and racking up double digits does count for something.
Downgrade
Holding steady
PK Mason Crosby, GB - Mason Crosby attempted three field goals, but made just one. He hit all four extra point chances. The rookie kicker has been solid all season and this off game should be overlooked. Fantasy owners can look at the bright side of three field goal chances and four extra points.
Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Cincinnati Bengals, CIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Bengals capitalized on a new NFL quarterback in Week 14, holding a bad Rams team to 10 points and just 10 first downs. While many expected St. Louis to attack the Bengals on the ground, Cincinnati only gave up two rushing first downs. The Bengals held St. Louis to 241 yards and also added an interception on the game. Next week they may face another fill-in QB for the 49ers if Trent Dilfer cannot take the start.
TD Indianapolis Colts, IND - The Colts defense is on a roll and next week they play at Oakland, followed by a home game against the Texans. They have 11 sacks and 11 turnovers (6 INTs, 5 FR) in their last three games.
TD Green Bay Packers, GB - The Packers had a great matchup against the Oakland Raiders this week. They finished the game with two interceptions and one fumble, which was returned for a touchdown by Will Blackmon. In addition, the Packers enjoyed watching Blackmon return a punt 57 yards for the score. With Woodson and KGB back, the Packer defense looks strong. If Brock Berlin starts for the Rams next week, the Packers will have another great matchup.
TD Houston Texans, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Texans have 9 sacks and 7 turnovers (4 INTs, 3 FR) in their last three games including 4 sacks this week. They managed to stop the Buccaneers this week and next week the Broncos come to town.
TD Minnesota Vikings, MIN - The Vikings defense is definitely coming around. They had a great matchup against San Francisco this week and get Chicago next week. The Vikings sacked Dilfer and Hill twice, with two interceptions (both by defensive linemen with one returned for a score), and three fumble recoveries. With the way the Vikings stop the run, they put a lot of pressure on opposing teams to not make mistakes.
Downgrade
TD Carolina Panthers, CAR - The Panthers defense was rolling along for a while, but that was against weaker opponents. Their remaining schedule does not include an easy game the rest of the way. Also, with the playoffs all but out of the picture, the team may not have the same desire, drive and heart to make the necessary plays on defense.
TD Baltimore Ravens, BAL - Either the Ravens played inspired football last week against New England or the Ravens have lost their elite defense status. The answer is probably somewhere in between the two, but regardless the answer is the same -- Baltimore is no longer a must start defense. Giving up 37 points in the first half (and it could have been more) to the Colts simply would not have happened to a Top 5 defense. Baltimore should rebound next week against a bad Miami team, but move the Ravens down to a matchup-based fantasy option.
Holding steady
TD Jacksonville Jaguars, JAX - The Jaguars may look like a good defense to start for your fantasy team thanks to the impressive win over Carolina, but the numbers don't exactly jump off the page. The Jags have only three sacks in their last three games. The game against Pittsburgh next week is huge when determining playoff seeding, but we're not so sure if the Jaguars defense is a strong play. Bench the Jaguars if you have a better option at defense/ST.
TD Pittsburgh Steelers, PIT - Against the Patriots, the Steelers have to be given a pass here. Tom Brady and Randy Moss played inspired and took advantage of both Anthony Smith and the lack of Troy Polamalu on the field. The Steeler defense will do much better the rest of the way, starting next week when Jacksonville visits Pittsburgh.
