Quarterback
Upgrade
QB Drew Brees, NO - Brees continued his impressive play against the Panthers with a 260-yard passing effort including three TD passes and a rushing score. Brees has at least 17.0 fantasy points in each of his last seven games. He remains a must-start every week.
QB Trent Dilfer, SF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Dilfer got the start for the second consecutive week with Alex Smith out due to a shoulder injury. Dilfer took advantage of the opportunity, going 25 of 39 for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Dilfer's performance may have earned him the starting job regardless of Alex Smith's health, as Dilfer currently gives the team the best chance to win.
QB Trent Edwards, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Edwards will reportedly start for the team in week 13 ahead of J.P. Losman. This late in the season, one would think this would be a permanent switch.
QB Brett Favre, GB - Brett Favre is on fire. He has now had three straight games with three touchdown passes. On Thanksgiving Day, the veteran passer completed 31 of 41 passes for 381 yards and the three scores. This brings his season totals to 3,356 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. This is through eleven games. This means that the gray-haired Mississippi boy is averaging 300 passing yards and a pair of scoring tosses each every game. Also, the low interception total is a good sign of how efficient and effective Brett Favre has been.
QB A.J. Feeley, PHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With Donovan McNabb out in Week 12 with an injury and having to go to New England and face the Patriots in prime time, the situation was not the best for Feeley to put up good numbers. Feeley surprised a lot of people by throwing for 345 yards and three touchdowns against New England. He stood tall in the pocket and put in a solid performance aside from a bad interception on the first drive (which went for a touchdown) and two late interceptions. Feeley did so well that there is a possibility of a QB controversy in Philadelphia, or at the very least a quick hook for Donovan McNabb if he returns to start and then struggles.
QB Gus Frerotte, STL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Frerotte replaced an injured Marc Bulger yesterday and completed his first eight passes of the game. He looked much less sharp as the game progressed, however, and fumbled away the Rams' final chances on a fourth and one at the goal line. He may get the start again next week, however, if Bulger is not ready to return after suffering a concussion.
QB David Garrard, JAX - Another win for the Jaguars and team leader David Garrard. Garrard passed for 296 yards with one TD pass. He still has not thrown an INT this season, and that's a big reason for Jacksonville's offensive success. Garrard has at least one TD pass in every game this season that he has finished (seven of eight games overall). He'll have a tough task against the current AFC South leading Colts next week at Indianapolis. While he may be a good NFL QB, his fantasy acumen is steadily getting attention.
QB Bruce Gradkowski, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Gradkowski enters the fray in the continuous spinning world of fantasy football. Jeff Garcia hurt his back after getting hit on the first play of the game and Gradkowski took his place for most of the game. Garcia did come back late in the fourth quarter. It is unclear if Garcia's injury will keep him sidelined for next week's game against New Orleans. If so, it will be Gradkowski getting the nod against one of the league's worst pass defenses.
QB Tarvaris Jackson, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Tarvaris Jackson has solidified his hold on the starting quarterback job. He has not been a consistent fantasy producer this season, but can be a decent emergency starter. In the first half of the week twelve game against the stout New York Giant pass defense, the second-year pro was six of eight for 110 yards and a touchdown. The scoring toss came on the first drive of the game off of play action. Jackson completed ten of twelve for 129 yards and the bomb of 60 yards to Sidney Rice. With the game out of hand, the Vikings ran the ball most of the second half. Tarvaris added 38 yards on five rushes.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - Manning got back on track with a 272-yard passing day with three TDs. There is some talk that Marvin Harrison may return next week for a critical divisional game against Jacksonville with first place in the division at stake. With all of his weapons back, Manning should be his old reliable self again. While there was some cause for concern, Manning silenced his doubters with his impressive Thanksgiving night performance.
QB Matt Moore, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Carolina's offensive woes continued this week against the Saints. David Carr started the game due to Vinny Testaverde's back problems. Carr made poor throws and bad reads for most of the game. He was eventually replaced by Matt Moore with Testaverde being the third QB available. Moore entered the game in the fourth quarter during garbage time and didn't necessarily impress or struggle in his brief appearance. It will be interesting to see what HC John Fox will do with the QB position next week against San Francisco. Do they go with the veteran Testaverde or give Moore a shot? Carolina is three games out of first in the NFC South so they may look at evaluating talent instead of relying on Testaverde to try and win. Stay tuned for further information regarding this situation.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - Palmer racked up great numbers again (32-38-283-3-1) as only six of his 38 passes did not go where he wanted them to go. Three touchdowns, all to Chad Johnson, highlighted Palmer's Week 12 effort against the Titans. Palmer could have had bigger numbers but the Bengals worked the clock later in the game with the score well out of reach.
QB Philip Rivers, SD - Rivers had one of his better games of the season yesterday, completing 25 of 35 pass attempts for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns (no interceptions). He reestablished his connection with Antonio Gates, and also found Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson for big plays. Rivers has been up and down this season, but does have a nice fantasy playoff schedule, as he faces the Lions and Broncos in weeks 15 and 16.
QB JaMarcus Russell, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Daunte Culpepper got the win yesterday, but is not the long-term answer at QB for the Raiders. Russell should get some playing time before the season is over.
QB Kurt Warner, ARI - Warner threw for a career-high 484 yards yesterday in a losing effort against the 49ers. He added two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions and had a very costly fumble in his own end zone in overtime. His stats were somewhat inflated by a successful 48 yards Hail Mary pass to end the first half, but even without that his yardage totals were astounding. Warner is averaging 7.9 yards per pass attempt on the season, and the Cardinals passing offense has been on a roll over the past three weeks, as Warner has thrown 7 touchdown passes during that span. Warner will face the Cleveland Browns next week, who have been unable to hold opposing QBs in check this season. Fantasy owners should also look forward to his week 15 matchup against the Saints.
Downgrade
QB Marc Bulger, STL - Bulger was hit several times on his five pass attempts yesterday, and left the game with a concussion midway through the first quarter. He has been sacked 30 times this season, and suffered broken ribs earlier in the year. It is unknown whether Bulger will be available this week for the game against the Falcons.
QB David Carr, CAR - Carr had another lackluster performance against one of the league's worst pass defenses. Before being replaced in the fourth quarter by Matt Moore, Carr was 10 of 22 for only 95 yards with two INTs. Carr's continuous inability to make plays and may result in his absence from the field for the rest of the season. Carolina knows what they have in Carr and what they have is a junker they overpaid for. By no means should Carr be on your roster or on your radar.
QB Kellen Clemens, NYJ - Kellen Clemens has faced two tough defenses in a row. He is not putting up good fantasy numbers. Cotchery was open a few times deep Thursday but Clemens could not connect. The second year pro from Oregon missed open receivers several times during the game. The former second round pick completed 12 of his 27 passes for 142 yards and an interception that was returned for a score. The next four games on the schedule are the Dolphins, Browns, Patriots and Titans. If he does not produce the next two games, the chances are slim for him against the New England and Tennessee. Clemens needs to show the Jets that he is the quarterback of the future for the team. At this point, it is up in the air.
QB J.P. Losman, BUF - Losman has reportedly been benched in favor of Trent Edwards.
QB Eli Manning, NYG - Eli Manning threw for 273 yards, but he had a terrible afternoon in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings. Manning completed less than half of his attempts (21 of 48) and had just one touchdown against four interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. He was nearly benched by HC Tom Coughlin, but he was able to finish his terrible performance with a meaningless TD pass to Plaxico Burress. Manning could bounce back next week against Chicago, but the Vikings also looked like a good matchup on paper.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - McNabb was out in Week 12 with an injury, and based on how A.J. Feeley performed in his absence against the Patriots he probably felt even worse. McNabb was sidelined with a sprained thumb and ankle and could not even practice this past week, but if he can return to action, head coach Andy Reid is likely to put him back out there against Seattle in Week 13 -- but expect a quick hook if he struggles.
QB Vinny Testaverde, CAR - Testaverde had some back pains flare up over the weekend which was enough to lower his status to the third QB available on game day against New Orleans. David Carr started the game and proceeded to do nothing to merit him starting anytime soon for Carolina. Matt Moore replaced the ineffective Carr in the fourth quarter and may get the nod to make his first NFL start next week against San Francisco. Carolina is three games back in the NFC South division lead, so John Fox and Co. may decide to continue to let Testaverde rest, thus giving Moore a chance to display his skills. Keep an eye on this situation this week. We wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina go with the rookie, Moore.
Holding steady
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - Jeff Garcia hurt his back after getting hit on the first play of the game against Washington and Bruce Gradkowski took his place for most of the game. Garcia did come back late in the fourth quarter after Washington pulled within a TD of taking the lead. It is unclear if Garcia's injury will keep him sidelined for next week's game against New Orleans. Keep an eye on his status this week, because if he is able to start, it's a favorable match up that should mean good production.
QB Joey Harrington, ATL - Another ho-hum game from Harrington and another Falcons loss. Atlanta is now 3-8 and the season is slipping away. The QB carousel of Harrington and Leftwich seems to be the wrong move each week. If Harrington continues to get the start next week, he may actually be worth looking into in very deep leagues or leagues that require two QBs. Atlanta plays at St. Louis next week, who might struggle against their spread offense. Just some food for thought there - the match up looks favorable.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Jon Kitna had a disappointing game against the stout Green Bay Packer defense. Fantasy owners should be encouraged that this game marked the third in a row that the former Bengal had over 40 pass attempts. But, the Packers held Kitna to under 50% completion percentage. The product of Eastern Washington completed 19 of 40 passes for 224 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception. He added nine more yards on the ground. In the last seven games, Kitna has had six scoring passes and eight interceptions. With a great matchup next week against the Minnesota Vikings, Kitna owners should expect a good game in week thirteen.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Romo had a mediocre performance on Thanksgiving Day, by Romo standards. He completed 21 of 28 passes for only 195 yards but did connect with Jason Witten and Terrell Owens for a touchdown each. This marks the 10th game (in 11 starts) that Romo has thrown for multiple scores. Romo also overcame an injury to his right pinkie finger which gave him some problems squeezing the ball, but he has since said that he feels fine. Expect him to throw for more touchdowns in a very important contest with Green Bay on Thursday.
QB Matt Schaub, HOU - Schaub had 256 yards passing with two TDs and two INTs in a loss to the Browns on Sunday. Schaub was unable to get things going with his prized wide out Andre Johnson. We don't expect that to happen very often. Continue to view Schaub as reliable fantasy option. Next week the Texans play at Tennessee. With Albert Haynesworth sidelined with a sore hamstring, the Titans defense has been very average if not below average. If Haynesworth is able to go next week, consider reserving Schaub as the match up will likely not be favorable.
QB Vince Young, TEN - Young has three consecutive games of at least 246 yards passing - all three games were losses. What might not be good for the Titans is good for his fantasy owners. It's a catch 22 situation if you're a Titans homer with Young as your QB. Despite the good passing stats, Young has only five TD passes with 13 INTs this season. His inability to score against the hapless Bengals pass defense is a disappointment, but he continues to air it out, which is not necessarily bad, fantasy-wise.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber produces week after week for the Cowboys, yet Julius Jones keeps getting to delude himself that he is the starter. Barber had more touches (22 to 18) and did much more with them, rolling up 103 yards on 18 tries to go along with four catches for 12 more yards. Barber also found the end zone on the opening drive, one that featured Jones much more than Barber, yet Barber was the back that got the ball inside of the Jets' 10-yard line.
RB Ladell Betts, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Betts had 11 total touches against the Bucs in Week 12 and excelled both as a rusher (8-47) and as a receiver (3-32). With starter Clinton Portis struggling to produce and also exhibiting ball security issues, there is a chance that Betts could see more work going forward. If you need to grab somebody as a potential contributor and need RB depth, take a look at Betts.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With both Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs out for the Giants, the depth chart is pretty shallow for New York. Bradshaw, a rookie back from Marshall, is now the #2 option and he had four carries for 29 yards against Minnesota in Week 12. Should new starter Reuben Droughns struggle or get hurt, Bradshaw is next in line.
RB Chris Brown, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Slight upgrade here, but only due to LenDale White's low numbers as of late. Brown is on the map, therefore he deserves to be mentioned. We don't recommend starting him, but if things continue to go downhill for White, Brown would be the next in line with Chris Henry now serving his four-game suspension that will last for most of the remainder of the fantasy season.
RB Aveion Cason, DET -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Aveion Cason played well on Thanksgiving. It was he who relieved Kevin Jones in situations where the Lions were expected to pass. Cason ran once for three yards and caught four of his five pass targets for 58 yards. It seemed as though the Lions had specific plays called for the 30-year old from Illinois State. The last time Cason had this many yards from scrimmage in a game was 2003. He is a player to keep an eye on if Kevin Jones misses any time the rest of the season. Duckett would still be the primary carrier, with Cason coming in on passing downs.
RB Reuben Droughns, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Droughns moved up the depth chart for the Giants with Brandon Jacobs out and Derrick Ward unable to practice. He found himself as the feature tailback against Minnesota in Week 12, where he struggled to get many yards but did get 46 on 15 carries and a touchdown. Droughns added a six-yard catch to put up decent numbers against a tough Vikings run defense and he could face a suspect defense in Chicago in Week 13.
RB Justin Fargas, OAK - Fargas rushed 22 times for 139 yards and a touchdown. Fargas seems well entrenched as the Raiders' starting RB for the rest of this season, as yesterday marked the fourth straight game in which he had at least 22 carries. Moreover, Michael Bush was not activated from the PUP list, and will not be eligible to suit up this year.
RB Frank Gore, SF - Gore had by far his best fantasy outing of the season yesterday, rushing 21 times for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns, and adding another 98 yards an 11 receptions. Surprisingly, that was Gore's first 100-yard rushing game this year. It was also the first time he scored a touchdown since week two. Nonetheless, he looked like the Frank Gore of 2006 yesterday, and may use this performance to get on a roll for the remainder of the season.
RB Earnest Graham, TB - Guess who's starting to look consistently impressive? That's right, Earnest Graham. This week Graham had 75 yards and a TD. Keep in mind Graham and the Buccaneers have a tremendously favorable schedule from here on out. Don't be surprised if the Graham owner wins your fantasy title. Yes, it's that sweet. @NO, @HOU, ATL, @SF, CAR. With a two game lead on the Saints, the NFC South is looking very much like it will be Tampa Bay's.
RB Ryan Grant, GB - Ryan Grant has established himself as the primary ball carrier for the Packers. In the last five games, the former Notre Dame star has had at least 21 touches. This is a lot of touches considering how many pass attempts Brett Favre has each game. Against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving day, Grant look good. He had 15 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. In addition, the versatile back caught six of his seven pass targets for 31 yards. Ryan Grant has had trouble scoring touchdowns, but has two scores in the last three games. But, those are his only two scoring runs this season. With the Packers facing the Cowboys, Raiders, Rams, and Bears in the next four games, Grant has three great matchups and one poor one.
RB Fred Jackson, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Fred Jackson saw action backing up Anthony Thomas. The versatile back finished the game with five carries for 18 yards. He added another five receptions for 47 yards, including a 23-yard catch late in the game. Jackson played well in preseason and is looking for the opportunity to get playing time every game as a change of pace ball carrier.
RB Steven Jackson, STL - Jackson has gained 100+ yards from scrimmage in each of the last three games, and added a touchdown yesterday for the third time in the last four games. With games against the Falcons and Bengals in the coming weeks, Jackson should continue to compile decent fantasy numbers.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - The Bengals jumped out to a big lead in Week 12 against the Titans and then featured the running attack. Johnson led the way for Cincinnati with 25 rushes, 88 yards and a touchdown. Johnson is still losing touches to both Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey, especially as a receiver, but he remains the starter and had the bulk of the work. Johnson should continue to contribute well the rest of the season, but faces a tough matchup against Pittsburgh next Sunday.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Kevin Jones bounced back after a couple of sub par performances to have a stellar game against the strong Green Bay Packer defense. The 25-year old Jones had his highest combined yardage total of the season. The former Hokie ran the ball 20 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two of his three pass targets for 27 yards. This was a great game for Jones who had experienced soreness in his foot for the last couple of weeks. The Vikings, Cowboys, and Chargers are next up for Kevin Jones and the Lion running game. All three will be tough matchups. But, this week showed Jones could put up points against any defense.
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Jamal Lewis racked up 134 yards on the ground and added 13 more as a receiver against the Texans in Week 12, continuing his production as the starter for the Browns. Lewis got stronger as the game wore on, accumulating 91 yards in the second half on 21 attempts. He has a nice schedule going forward, especially in Weeks 14-16 (Jets, Bills, Bengals) and could help many fantasy teams in the postseason.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Adrian Peterson is expected back next week. With Detroit and San Francisco next up for the Vikings, Peterson could produce good fantasy numbers even if he is limited. It has been reported that the outstanding rookie will wear a knee brace when he returns. There was talk that the former Sooner would play this week, but it did not happen.
RB Adrian Peterson, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Adrian Peterson came into the week twelve game after the injury to Cedric Benson. It is obviously too early to ascertain the severity of the injury, but it did not look good. The all-purpose back finished the day with 17 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown. He also had the most catches on the team with five for 41 yards. This is definitely a situation to monitor. Peterson had only 35 rushes on the season coming into the game, but he could vault into fantasy viability if Benson misses any time. The Giants and Redskins are next up on the schedule as the Bears attempt to sneak into the playoffs.
RB Kolby Smith, KC -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - In his first NFL start, Smith rushed 31 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Smith will continue to carry the load for the Chiefs until Larry Johnson returns, which may not be until next season. Smith did his damage against the NFL's worst run defense, but it was a very impressive performance nonetheless. He didn't fare as well in the passing game, however, as he failed to hold onto a number of catchable balls.
RB Fred Taylor, JAX - Taylor continues to be the first option for the Jaguars rushing game. This week Taylor rushed 14 times for 104 yards including a first quarter 50-yard TD run. You Taylor owners should take notice that Jacksonville's fantasy playoff schedule is enticing. Week 14 at home vs. Jack Del Rio's former Panthers. He should be very familiar with Carolina's defense. Week 15 is on the road at Pittsburgh, but if you're lucky enough to be in the fantasy championship game Taylor faces off at home against the league's worst rushing defense -- Oakland.
RB Ricky Williams, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Ricky Williams could start Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is reported that Jesse Chatman's ankle looked worse Friday than earlier in the week. The same reports say that the former Longhorn took the majority of the snaps with the first team offense on Friday. Williams still needs to be activated to play, but according to the Miami Herald, he could be the starting running back versus the Steelers Monday. The Herald added, "One reason the Dolphins can do that is because Williams continues to show fresh legs during the portion of practice the media is allowed to watch. Cameron is simply calling Ricky's practices, 'solid.' But, in fact, Williams has shown a burst not expected of a player away from the game since 2005."
RB Garrett Wolfe, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Garrett Wolfe saw action after the injury to Cedric Benson. The rookie had three carries for 29 yards, most coming on a 25-yard run. Wolfe only has nine carries for 31 yards on the season, with the majority of his season total coming on today's long run. If Benson misses much time, Wolfe could be the change of pace back for Bears. Chicago has very little depth at the position so Wolfe and Peterson would get all of the action at running back.
Downgrade
RB Cedric Benson, CHI - Cedric Benson injured his left ankle or lower leg in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos and could miss the remainder of the season. The former Texas Longhorn was having a very good game when injured. Benson rushed eight times for 47 yards in a little over one quarter. The third year pro has not had a good season to date and this injury comes during a game when fantasy owners were gaining hope.
RB Reggie Bush, NO - Bush had only nine carries and three receptions in the lopsided win against Carolina on Sunday. This was his first game this season with fewer than 10 fantasy points, and his touches have steadily decreased as the season has gone on. If Bush doesn't find the endzone his value drops greatly. When he doesn't get at least five receptions and doesn't score, well that's a poor game for his standards. Next week the Saints will face the Buccaneers and their stingy defense. Don't expect big rushing numbers, but he could possibly breakout with another big reception game.
RB Jesse Chatman, MIA - Jesse Chatman is reported to have been limping worse during Friday's practice than in the prior two days. The same report quotes HC Cam Cameron as saying "We can't get ahead of ourselves in this situation," Cameron said, playing this hand close to his vest. "We'll see where Jesse is. Jesse is an extremely tough guy. He's a competitor. He'll do everything he can to be full speed by Monday night.'' Also, the author of the article says, "Although Chatman is listed as questionable and coach Cam Cameron continues to talk as if the player will be pretty close to healthy by Monday, in this reporter's opinion, Chatman seemed slower Friday and the limp was more pronounced than it was two days ago when I last saw him during the early portion of practice."
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - It doesn't get much worse than nine carries for -5 yards, including two fumbles, one of which was a turnover. Foster is one of the most average RBs in the league, because he nearly always seems to get at least 50 yards rushing (eight of 10 games heading into the Saints game). His poor performance only means that he'll have a breakout game somewhere down the line in the near future. Possibly next week against San Francisco? Foster is just good enough to make you want to start him and just bad enough to keep you guessing every week. Hopefully you guessed wisely this week.
RB Andre Hall, DEN - Hall stepped in to replace Travis Henry and Selvin Young yesterday, and turned in an impressive performance, rushing 26 times for 98 yards and a touchdown, and adding 69 yards on two receptions. The Broncos have a great matchup this week as they take on the Oakland Raiders, but enthusiasm for Hall is pretty much out the window due to his high ankle sprain (suffered in Sunday's loss).
RB Chris Henry, TEN - Henry began serving his four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He will be able to return week 16.
RB Priest Holmes, KC - Holmes retired after re-injuring his neck last week.
RB Brandon Jacobs, NYG - Jacobs missed the game with a leg injury, opening the door for Reuben Droughns to start in Week 12 against Minnesota. Watch the injury report to see if and when Jacobs will play again.
RB Julius Jones, DAL - Julius Jones started the game, but it mostly went downhill from that point. Jones rushed 14 times for 64 yards and caught four passes for 24 yards, but he lost a goal line opportunity on the opening drive to his alleged backup, Marion Barber. Barber had more touches (22 to 18) and did much more with them, making Jones' starter status inconsequential. Jones does not break many big runs nor does he get the goal line looks very often. Fantasy owners should adjust their rosters accordingly.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Thomas Jones disappointed once again. After a good game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week eleven, many had high hopes that the former Bear had turned the corner. This is not the case. Jones finished the week twelve against the Cowboys with 17 carries for 40 yards. He added two receptions for 17 yards. In five of Jones' eleven games, he has been held to under 50 rushing yards. In addition, fantasy owners have to be disappointed by the lack of touchdowns - Jones has not scored season.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney had his first carry with 11:24 left in the third quarter, and then promptly exited the game after the one yard loss. The Patriots only called one running play in the first half, a red zone carry by Heath Evans for a score. The former Minnesota Gopher had a bad drop on a screen pass late in the third quarter that could have gone for a big gain. He finished the game with ten carries for 31 yards and a touchdown, but this is simply not a running team. The Patriots had a gameplan with a four-receiver set and Kevin Faulk to attack the Eagle defense.
RB Maurice Morris, SEA - Shaun Alexander missed his third consecutive game with knee and ankle injuries, but may return to the lineup this week against the Eagles. Maurice Morris has generally played well filling in for Alexander, but struggled to find running room yesterday for most of the game. He finished with 16 carries for 79 yards, with 46 of those yards coming on his only breakaway run of the day. Whether Shaun Alexander returns to the lineup or not, the Seahawks will likely continue to put the offense on Matt Hasselbeck's shoulders.
RB Jerious Norwood, ATL - Hold off on the Norwood bandwagon jumping party - for right now. We still think that he could put together a strong game any week now. Until he does, don't even think about using him in your lineup. The Falcons play at St. Louis this week, so if you absolutely have no other choice, go for the gusto and hope this is the week.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - Portis ran the ball 20 times for just 68 yards against Tampa Bay, but even more worrisome was his two fumbles. He did manage to go 5-33 as a receiver but the low yardage per carry (3.4) is a concern. The turnovers only compound the issue, and if Portis does not improve on both ball security and the yardage then look for Ladell Betts to become more of a contributor going forward.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Chester Taylor had a very good game against the New York Giants in week twelve. But, with rookie Adrian Peterson expected back next week, Taylor is downgraded. The former Raven finished the game with 77 yards on 31 rushes and a score. He added twelve more yards on a pair of receptions. If Peterson comes back next week as expected, Taylor will move back into the backup role, getting just a few touches each game.
RB Derrick Ward, NYG - With Brandon Jacobs out, the door was open again for a new RB to start for the Giants. Unfortunately for Ward, he just cannot get healthy and remains sidelined. Watch the injury report to see if and when Ward will play again.
RB LenDale White, TEN - White is coming off three consecutive games of 42 or fewer yards rushing. This past week against Cincinnati, White was flagged for a personal foul for kicking or kneeing a Bengals player after the whistle in the second quarter. That doesn't fly on a Jeff Fisher coached team. He was then benched in favor of Chris Brown and did not see the field the rest of the game. The Titans were trailing big at that point and didn't rush the ball much at all in the second half. We still like White to be the Titans main ball carrier, but his recent sub par play and poor self-discipline lead us to give him a yellow flag until he turns things around.
RB Dwayne Wright, BUF - Dwayne Wright saw no action as a running back in the week twelve game against Jacksonville. He was active and played on special teams, but Fred Jackson played as the backup to Anthony Thomas. The rookie from Fresno is still learning the NFL game as he regains strength from a knee injury in college.
Holding steady
RB Joseph Addai, IND - Addai left the game on Thanksgiving night with a minor neck injury. He returned to finish with 44 yards on 10 carries, including a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter. Addai should be fine for next week's game against division rival Jacksonville. Keep him in your lineup. He may have a big receiving game this week. The Colts seem to lean on his receiving skills in big games.
RB Ron Dayne, HOU - With Ahman Green still nursing a sore knee that won't go away, the Texans have turned to Ron Dayne. While he's nothing super, he's healthy and he's gaining yards that garner a RB3 or flex slot in your lineup. Continue to roll with Dayne if you have been playing him regularly.
RB Warrick Dunn, ATL - Dunn has been up and down all season long and just when he puts together a few good games, he throws in a stinker. And just when he has a few poor games in a row, he turns in a game that makes you wonder. The Falcons aren't lighting up the scoreboard, but for some reason Dunn, not Norwood seems to be the RB of choice for Atlanta. Most of his games are below where you would want them to be, so if you're going to start Dunn, do so when the match up is right. Next week the match up is right - at St. Louis, so start him as your RB3 or flex if you've got him.
RB Travis Henry, DEN - We should know something by Tuesday concerning his possible suspension. If nothing is handed down by then, Henry would likely be eligible to play in week 13 as the league rarely suspends anyone later in the week.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - Just when you thought MJD was going to turn in another lackluster performance, he salvages a pitiful outing with a 17-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter with the game already decided. Still, he finished with only 10 yards rushing on 10 carries, including that 17-yard TD. Yikes! This week it was all Fred Taylor as Jones-Drew continued to take a back seat to the veteran. He's still putting points on the board, so keep him active in your lineup if you have no other logical alternatives.
RB Anthony Thomas, BUF - Anthony Thomas did not run well against the Jacksonville Jaguars in week twelve. He did score decent fantasy points, but will go back to the backup role as soon as Marshawn Lynch is healthy. The former Michigan star carried the ball 15 times for 46 yards, with a long of eight yards. He did catch eight balls for 45 yards and a touchdown. The eight receptions were the high on the Bills team. In the big picture, a 91 total yards and a touchdown is a good fantasy game, especially in PPR leagues. However, this will soon come to an end for the plodding former Bear when the rookie is healthy.
RB Kenny Watson, CIN - Watson dropped down the depth chart again in Week 12, getting only nine touches against the Titans. He rushed four times for 17 yards and one touchdown and added 5-32 as a receiver. Watson still produced, but with such unpredictability for the Bengals' backfield, Watson is a risky player to use on a given week if Rudi Johnson is healthy.
RB Selvin Young, DEN - Young missed yesterday's game with a nagging knee injury, but should return to the lineup this week against the woeful Raiders' run defense. Andre Hall sprained his ankle against the Bears, so Young would probably get the start if he can go. But keep an eye on the Broncos' injury report later in the week.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Deion Branch, SEA - In his second game back from injury, Branch was the most targeted receiver for the Seahawks, and ended the day with 5 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. With D.J. Hackett expected to possibly miss some time after reinjuring his ankle, Branch should be the team's featured receiver down the stretch.
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Reggie Brown was targeted often for the Eagles in Week 12 as he found the end zone with one of his five catches. He posted 45 yards on his five receptions and nearly scored when AJ Feeley threw too high for him at the goal line, but then Feeley showed confidence in him by giving him the next pass where he got the score.
WR Isaac Bruce, STL - Bruce was targeted another 9 times yesterday, after receiving 10 targets the previous week. Since returning to the lineup from a hamstring injury earlier this season, Bruce has worked his way back into the swing of the offense and has put up double-digit fantasy points in two of the last three games. After the Falcons game this week, the Rams face the Bengals in week 14, who have been generous to opposing wide receivers this season.
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG - Burress struggled again with his ankle injury but did manage to collect seven passes for 93 yards and a late touchdown in a 41-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Burress continues to fight through his ankle issues, and it was nice to see him find the end zone again.
WR Reche Caldwell, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Remember this guy? Yes, Reche Caldwell is back and contributing as an NFL receiver, catching five balls for 43 yards in Week 12 for the Redskins. If Antwaan Randle El is injured and cannot go next week, Washington could need receiver help and Caldwell could step up against Buffalo.
WR Marques Colston, NO - Another week goes by and yet another strong game from Colston. He and Brees are developing great chemistry together. This week Colston finished with seven catches for 93 yards and a TD in the win against Carolina. He is averaging 8.4 catches per game over his last five games. He now has six TDs on the season and remains a must start WR in all formats.
WR Donald Driver, GB - Donald Driver now has enjoyed two good games in a row. The former Alcorn State star caught ten of his twelve targets for 147 yards. This follows an 83-yard effort last week. The one disappointing aspect has been the few touchdowns Driver has caught this season. He has two scoring grabs, with none since week three. On the season, the 32 year old has 63 receptions for 832 yards and the two scores. Keep an eye on the injury report as it has been reported that Driver sustained an ankle injury in the game. The good news is that he has a couple of extra days to recover.
WR Braylon Edwards, CLE - Edwards keeps on putting up impressive efforts and finding the end zone week after week. He caught four balls for 57 yards on nine targets and is a must start every week. His remaining schedule is quite favorable, especially in Weeks 14-16 (Jets, Bills, Bengals) and should continue to put up big numbers.
WR Larry Fitzgerald, ARI - Fitzgerald has led the Cardinals in receiving in each of the last four weeks, and now has over twice as many receiving yards as Anquan Boldin on the season. At this point, it appears that Fitzgerald has established himself as the team's clear number one receiver.
WR Justin Gage, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Gage is blossoming into a nice first option for the Titans new-found passing offense. He has 17 catches and two TDs in his last three games. Ironically it's also the same time frame in which Vince Young has started to air it out. Gage is becoming a nice flex or WR4 option with his increased production. Tennessee is home against Houston next week, so another good game could be in the cards.
WR Anthony Gonzalez, IND - The rookie Gonzalez' returned from a thumb injury and had his best game as a pro, catching 6 balls for 105 yards. His window of opportunity is closing fast though, because there is talk that Marvin Harrison may return next week against Jacksonville after being out since week four. Gonzalez is a great start this week as a WR4 or flex option if Harrison does return. He may still be a legit option regardless.
WR Marvin Harrison, IND - The Colts have talked about bringing Harrison back next week against division rival Jacksonville. The Colts have a one-game lead on the Jaguars in the division and could really use Harrison's help if he's able. Interviews from Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy during the Thanksgiving game have hinted towards next week as a possible return date. Peyton mentioned that if he practices with the team early in the week that things would look good for his return. Tony Dungy has been very good at keeping the media aware of his lineup intentions. We'll know more about Harrison's possible return later in the week. Stay tuned.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Greg Jennings now has six touchdowns in the last five games. The Packers targeted the second year pro on the slant from inside the five yard line. The former second round pick from Western Michigan finished the game catching five of his seven pass targets for 60 yards and a pair of scoring grabs. He had a chance on a third score, but could not hang on in the corner of the end zone. In the last five games, Jennings has averaged five grabs, 79.4 receiving yards and 1.2 touchdowns per game. Even though Brett Favre is spreading the ball around, Jennings is producing almost every game.
WR Calvin Johnson, DET - Calvin Johnson had his best outing of the season. Even though the rookie sensation was shaky early, dropping a few passes, he finished the game strong. He caught seven of his fifteen pass targets for 83 yards and a scoring reception. Jon Kitna targeted to the athletic receiver often throughout the day. It looked as though the game plan was to get the ball to the rookie. Kitna threw to Calvin Johnson on 15 of his 40 pass attempts. This makes two games in a row with a touchdown grab for the former Georgia Tech star. He looks to be fully healed from his back injury.
WR Chad Johnson, CIN - Johnson finally found the end zone again, and in big fashion in Week 12. Johnson caught 12 balls for 103 yards and racked up three scores against Tennessee. He also broke the team record with his 531st career catch in the second quarter of the game. Look for Johnson to continue to produce the rest of the way as a solid fantasy contributor.
WR Joe Jurevicius, CLE - The Browns keep on throwing the ball every week, but here is something to note -- Cleveland only had two wide receivers make a catch in Week 12. One was Braylon Edwards, and the other was Jurevicius, who had five catches for 55 yards against the Texans. He now had at least four catches in five straight games and makes for a nice addition for depth or a spot start.
WR Greg Lewis, PHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Lewis was nearly the surprise hero for the Eagles against New England. He returned from a shoulder injury to catch four balls for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis got open several times deep down the middle as A.J. Feeley targeted him in the end zone and Lewis came up big. Should the Eagles continue with this offensive approach, Lewis could be a nice spot starter and late-season pickup.
WR Derrick Mason, BAL - Mason continues to be a big time receiver for Baltimore, catching seven balls for 99 yards in Week 12 against the Chargers. Despite the Ravens' lack of offense of late, he remains a solid contributor and a big plus in PPR leagues. The Ravens will also have to throw often against New England next Sunday night.
WR Keenan McCardell, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Washington took to the air once again in Week 12, and with some job openings at wide receiver Keenan McCardell stepped up to contribute. He caught six passes for 60 yards against Tampa Bay, making it 11 catches for him in the past two weeks. If Antwaan Randle El is injured and cannot go next week, McCardell may start against Buffalo.
WR Sinorice Moss, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Plaxico Burress is at less than full strength, so someone has to step up and be a viable target for Eli Manning. Sinorice Moss continued his audition for that role in Week 12 as he had three catches for 39 yards against Minnesota. If Burress degrades to the point where he cannot start any longer, Moss may become a starter.
WR Sidney Rice, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Sidney Rice caught a bomb on the first drive of the game. In addition to the 60-yard scoring grab, Rice had two other catches for 22 yards just in the first half. The rookie from South Carolina had half of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson's six completions in the first half. Rice didn't have another catch as the team spent most of the second stanza running out the clock. Jackson only completed ten passes on the game. No other Viking had even fifteen yards receiving.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG - Toomer caught four balls for 83 yards against Minnesota, sparked early by a 31-yard catch in the first half. He padded the stats some after halftime, but if Plaxico Burress continues to struggle then it would be Toomer as the next best option.
WR Javon Walker, DEN - Walker "played" in week 12, but he really wasn't a part of the gameplan. This week, he should be ready to play for real.
WR Kevin Walter, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - In a game where Andre Johnson was for the most part absent, Kevin Walter helped pick up the slack with six catches for 65 yards and a TD. Walter has 48 receptions in the last seven games. That's 6.8 per game. The fact that he's still producing even after Andre Johnson, the human one-man offense, has returned from injury says something. It tells us that Walter is still a legit fantasy option if you're looking for that last player to fill your lineup. Don't get too excited, but he has the ability to put up numbers that might just help your team in a pinch.
WR Wes Welker, NE - Wes Welker had another great game. With the Eagles keeping Randy Moss in check, the former Miami Dolphin was open almost all game. He definitely has the confidence of quarterback Tom Brady. The former Texas Tech Red Raider caught 13 passes for 149 yards. His 13 receptions were seven more than the next highest total on the Patriots.
WR Roddy White, ATL - If there's one player on the Falcons that you want starting for you every week it's Roddy White. White has not had fewer three receptions in any game this season, and he has at least four receptions in eight of his eleven games. He has only three TDs this season, so he's not an elite fantasy threat, but he's a very nice WR3 or flex starter. Continue to play White if you've got him. He has a great match up against the Rams this week.
WR Ernest Wilford, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - We have an Ernest Wilford sighting. This may just be a one game anomaly, but Wilford added five catches for 60 yards in the Jaguars game against Buffalo. Dennis Northcutt and Marcedes Lewis also had five catches in the game, so it may have just been David Garrard going with what worked. We don't recommend rostering Wilford with all of the possible Jaguars mediocre receiving options, but keep this game under your watch in the event he does decide to have a strong second half of the season.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - We mentioned last week that Reggie Williams is a strong fantasy producer for the one fact that he has five TDs in five different games. Well, make it six TDs in six different games. He's consistent and that has to count for something. He had only one catch on Sunday, a 59-yard TD in the fourth quarter that put away the game for Jacksonville. He's earning the right to be started in your lineup. Go ahead and play him as your flex option. He's getting red zone looks and he's a deep threat. It's hard to ignore six TDs, no matter what his season yardage numbers are.
Downgrade
WR Mark Clayton, BAL - After a good effort in Week 10, Clayton has now struggled in two consecutive weeks. Clayton had just two catches for 15 yards against San Diego in Week 12, barely better than his 2-9 performance in Week 11. With the Patriots up next, Baltimore should be expected to throw a lot more, but Clayton remains a very risky option. Start at your own risk.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - Laveranues Coles missed the Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys. Traditionally, these injuries take several weeks to heal. Coles was having a pretty good season with Chad Pennington under center. The injury, combined with Kellen Clemens at the helm, will hinder the productivity of the former Florida State star for most of the rest of the season.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery has had a couple of poor games since the quarterback switch to Kellen Clemens. In these two games, the 25 year old has three catches for 48 yards combined. In week twelve, the former North Carolina State star caught two of his seven targets for 43 yards. Clemens missed him a couple of times on plays that would have resulted in big plays. With the next two games against the Dolphins and Jets, Cotchery needs Clemens to improve his efficiency because he has a chance at a couple of good games.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton missed the Week 12 game on Thanksgiving Day against the New York Jets with an ankle injury. He should be back in a week to face Green Bay in an important game, but as of late Crayton is not seeing many targets. Until he proves himself as both healthy and productive, fantasy owners should keep him firmly on the bench.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Lee Evans is consistently inconsistent. With Marshawn Lynch out with the ankle injury, the Jaguars contained the only Bill playmaker, Evans. He caught his first pass with 44 seconds left in the game, and the game was out of hand. He finished the game with a pair of receptions for 19 yards. Evans is a pass catcher with high upside each game, but is prone to poor games occasionally.
WR Mike Furrey, DET - Mike Furrey is not getting the looks many expected after last season. In week twelve, Furrey did not catch a pass, even though he was targeted three times. On the season, Furrey has only topped 50 yards receiving three times and has only one scoring grab. He only has 39 catches for 465 yards and the score through the first eleven games of the season.
WR D.J. Hackett, SEA - Hackett reaggravated the ankle injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks earlier this season. The severity of his injury is not fully known, but HC Mike Holmgren indicated that Hackett could miss additional time because of it.
WR Dwayne Jarrett, CAR - Jarrett did have some game action in each of the last two games, but this past week against New Orleans, Jarrett was nowhere to be found. While it was a possibility that Carolina might look to see what they have in Jarrett, things have been put on the back burner for now. We expect to see more of Jarrett later in the season, but we saw nothing from him this week.
WR Michael Jenkins, ATL - One week removed from a nine-reception game, Jenkins puts up a one catch for nine yards clunker. Ironically the one catch was the game's first play. While we still like Jenkins to have more production than this going forward, the poor game leaves a bad taste in your mouth if you are contemplating using him as your last lineup choice in the deepest of leagues.
WR Santana Moss, WAS - Moss returned to earth this week as he caught five passes for just 37 yards against Tampa Bay. Moss also fumbled after his first reception, further decreasing his value. He is just too inconsistent to start on a regular basis and should be on fantasy team benches.
WR Antwaan Randle El, WAS - Antwaan Randle El left the Week 12 game against Tampa Bay early with a hamstring injury. Watch the injury reports this week to see if he can go Week 13 against Buffalo.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Smith has not scored a TD since week six, which was also Carolina's last win. He continues to drop in value, but at any time he can catch lightning in a bottle, so we don't necessarily condone benching him altogether unless you have better alternative options. Smith was shaken up while blocking and left the game in the second quarter. He returned on the next series though. He was seen limping at the end of the game, so there may be another injury not yet made aware. Next week the Panthers host the 49ers and the starting QB is up for grabs. We don't think it will be David Carr anytime soon though, because Carr had an abysmal performance against New Orleans, one of the league's worst pass defenses. Carr was benched in favor of rookie QB Matt Moore in the fourth quarter.
WR Mike Williams, TEN - While it's news that Williams signed with the Titans, the real nugget of info is his reported weight of 270 lbs. Unless Tennessee plans on playing him at TE (or even OT), don't expect to see much of Mike Williams in 2007.
WR Roy Williams, DET - Roy Williams disappointed once again. After the game on Thanksgiving Day, the former Longhorn now has eclipsed 50 receiving yards in two of his last seven games. In those games, he only has two touchdowns, both in week ten. Fantasy owners had high hopes for the former first round pick. He caught only three of his seven pass targets for 32 yards. Roy Williams and company get a good matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in week thirteen, so another weak outing will be a huge red flag.
Holding steady
WR Drew Carter, CAR - Carter has been hot recently, but this week he only had three receptions for 41 yards. He has 14 receptions in his last four games. He's more of a deep threat and a red zone target and with Carolina struggling to reach the end zone. He may not be a great option for you going forward unless you are in a deeper league that starts more WRs.
WR Jabar Gaffney, NE - Jabar Gaffney had a good game against the Eagles. But, as the fourth receiver, Gaffney will find it difficult to produce fantasy points in any given week. The Patriots utilized a four receiver, with Kevin Faulk at running back, set for much of the game, especially the first half. Gaffney had a big sixteen-yard reception for a first down with just two minutes remaining to seal the game for the Patriots. Gaffney caught six balls for 87 yards and a touchdown.
WR Joey Galloway, TB - Galloway had a poor outing on Sunday catching only two balls for 21 yards against Washington, but keep in mind, the Bucs were without Jeff Garcia for most of the game with a bad back. Bruce Gradkowski replaced him and his main role was to not make mistakes and preserve the win. Galloway's number just wasn't called. It happens. Continue to start Galloway with confidence. The Bucs have a great schedule down the stretch and it should mean plenty of options for Galloway.
WR Chris Henry, CIN - Chris Henry had a quiet afternoon with just three catches for 41 yards against the Titans. The Bengals jumped out early and Chad Johnson scored three touchdowns as Cincinnati coasted the rest of the game after the big lead was established. Look for Henry to contribute bigger efforts the reset of the season as the Bengals have several favorable matchups in December.
WR Ike Hilliard, TB - The Bucs passing game took a back seat when Jeff Garcia went down with a back injury in the first play of the game. As a result, backup QB Bruce Gradkowski focused on preserving the lead and did not have a reason to throw down field often if at all. Hilliard still managed four catches for 44 yards. He remains a good option as a flex or WR4 for your lineup, especially in PPR leagues.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Houshmandzadeh had a quiet afternoon by his normal standards, catching seven balls for 66 yards against the Titans. The Bengals jumped out early and Chad Johnson scored three touchdowns as Cincinnati coasted the rest of the game after the big lead was established. Look for Houshmandzadeh to contribute bigger efforts the reset of the season as the Bengals have several favorable matchups in December.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Johnson had a less than Andre Johnson-like game against Cleveland on Sunday getting only 37 yards on three catches. The Browns pressured him at the line all game and he never was able to get into any groove with his route running. Don't let this off-the-norm performance affect your thoughts on his place in your lineup. Johnson is a must start every week, in all formats.
WR James Jones, GB - James Jones had a good game after several poor outings. He grabbed five of his seven targets for 75 yards. This is first game with more than three grabs since week five. He is holding steady just because this looks to be an aberration after four straight games with only three receptions. Also, he only has two scoring catches this season. With the way Favre is finding his receivers, and spreading the ball around, Jones will continue to be a very inconsistent fantasy play every week.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Randy Moss was effectively shutdown by the Philadelphia Eagle defense orchestrated by Eagle defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. Moss was held without a catch for the entire second half. He finished with five receptions for 43 yards. Lito Sheppard played the former Raider and Viking strong all game. With the Eagles gameplan, the Patriots countered by using Moss as a decoy down the field and running other receivers underneath Moss' deep route.
WR Dennis Northcutt, JAX - Northcutt was one of three Jaguars receivers with five catches this past week. Don't look that far into it. While Northcutt has at least one catch in every game but one this year, we don't see him as a fantasy threat next week or in future weeks.
WR Brad Smith, NYJ - Brad Smith saw extended action with Laveranues Coles out with the ankle injury. The problem was that Kellen Clemens was not accurate. The former quarterback at Missouri caught tow of his three pass targets for twelve yards. This was disappointing after seeing 25 targets the last three weeks. Many fantasy owners were hopeful that the young receiver would be a vital part of the Jet offense.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Chris Baker, NYJ -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Chris Baker has had three straight games with at least three catches and 34 yards. In the last three games, the former Michigan State Spartan has a total of eleven catches for 112 and a score. This is not too bad for a waiver wire tight end. On Thanksgiving Day, Baker caught three of his seven targets for 36 yards. His three receptions were more than any of the Jet wide receivers. Kellen Clemens is targeting the big tight end, with 13 targets the last two weeks.
TE Chris Cooley, WAS - Cooley had 96 receiving yards on six receptions, including a 39-yard touchdown in Week 12. He remains the go-to guy for Jason Campbell on a weekly basis. Cooley now has seven touchdowns for the season, a career high for the tight end. Cooley is a must start TE for all teams that require one in their lineups.
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - Hip-hip-Hooray!! Daniels finally scored a TD for the first time this season. He is quietly having a very good season despite being MIA from the end zone - until now of course. Daniels finished with an Antonio Gates-like 7 catches for 82 yards, including the streak-ending score in the fourth quarter. Daniels now has seven games of five receptions or more. His strong performance should put him in the fantasy TE top 10. He is definitely worth a start every week, especially in PPR leagues.
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Over the last six weeks, Davis is second on the team with 43 targets (7.2/g). He caught 6 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown yesterday and will continue to be a major part of the passing game down the stretch.
TE Antonio Gates, SD - Gates had his best game of the season, catching 6 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns yesterday. After two very quiet games in weeks 9 and 10, Gates has found the end zone in each of the last two games and appears to be back in his normal groove.
TE Marcedes Lewis, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Take note - Lewis had five receptions for 57 yards in the Jaguars win over the Bills. This was Lewis' best game this season if you don't count his one catch for one yard for a TD last week against San Diego. We don't recommend rostering him, let alone starting him, but we wanted to let you know that he is somewhat on the map with a TD last week and five catches this week.
TE Billy Miller, NO -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Saints have another TE other than Eric Johnson and his name is Billy Miller. Miller has two TDs in his last three games and 132 yards in his last four games. He's now had two if not three consecutive games where he has opened some eyes. We can think of other alternate options for your TE role, but Miller is moving up the charts.
TE Bo Scaife, TEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The increase in passing yards from Vince Young has a trickle down effect that has given Bo Scaife an increase in production. This week he had five receptions for 33 yards. The yardage isn't that impressive, but the receptions merit some notice. Don't go inserting Scaife into your lineup just yet, but if the Titans have a good match up, he might not be a bad option.
TE Tony Scheffler, DEN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Scheffler had his best game of the season yesterday, hauling in 5 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown catch was a spectacular grab; he went up high and fought the ball away from two defenders in the end zone. Scheffler has been targeted more than fellow TE Daniel Graham in each of the past seven games.
TE Kellen Winslow Jr, CLE - Winslow had 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown against the Texans. He now has had at least a touchdown or 60 yards receiving in every game this season and is a must start in leagues that require a tight end.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten cannot be considered the #1 TE in fantasy football, but he certainly is gaining on Antonio Gates. Witten scored his sixth touchdown on the season, catching four balls for 54 yards in a Thanksgiving Day victory over the Jets. Witten was also targeted inside the Jets' 10-yard line and was in position for a second score, but the ball was underthrown. With all the attention Witten gets now from Tony Romo, he remains a must start and a huge asset in fantasy leagues that require a tight end. His matchup in Week 13 is also favorable against Green Bay, who struggle to slow down tight ends this year.
Downgrade
TE Eric Johnson, NO - Johnson had only 19 yards on one reception this week against Carolina. Johnson has been up and down all year, but the emergence of Billy Miller has taken away some of Johnson's already mediocre production. Don't consider him a good option going forward.
TE Greg Olsen, CHI - Greg Olsen had a nice run of games earlier in the season, but he hasn't performed well since the team's week-nine bye. In the three contests since then, Olsen has scored a total of five fantasy points.
Holding steady
TE Jeff King, CAR - Just when Jeff King was losing ground, he puts together a respectable game. This week he had 36 yards on five receptions. Five receptions from any TE is worth mentioning. King has at least two catches in every game but one this season.
TE Donald Lee, GB - Donald Lee had an off game after several good games in a row. With the way that Favre spreads the ball to many receivers, it is expected that Lee will have an occasional disappointing game. The caught his one target for ten yards on Thanksgiving Day was his worst game of the season. The former Mississippi State star has a season total of 39 catches for 468 yards and four touchdowns through eleven games. He has been a pleasant surprise this season.
TE Alex Smith, TB - Coming off a strong game last week where he had three catches for 51 yards and a TD, Smith reinforced his production with a nice 41-yard game on three receptions against Washington. Smith is creeping up the TE rankings, but he's still not quite to the point of being an every week starter. He may be good for a few games down the stretch, simply due to the Bucs soft schedule going forward. Keep an eye on his progress over the next few weeks. He could be a nice sleeper pick if you absolutely need a TE for the playoff run.
TE Ben Watson, NE - Ben Watson is a tight end that is difficult to predict each week. Against the Eagles in week twelve, the former Georgia Bulldog did not see the field much due to the four receiver sets. This is just one of those games where he was not a vital part of the Patriot gameplan. Watson finished the game with three catches for 17 yards.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Mason Crosby, GB - Mason Crosby has had good opportunities to score the last few games. Since week nine (four games), Crosby has had 13 field goal opportunities. Fantasy owners should be happy with three field goal attempts a game. Against the Lion on Thanksgiving, the rookie completed all three of his field goal chances and all four extra points. He is benefiting from the great season Brett Favre is enjoying.
PK Jason Hanson, DET - Jason Hanson is upgraded after a great game on Thanksgiving Day. His performance seems to track with the effectiveness of the running game, especially Kevin Jones. After two off games (just like Jones), Hanson had a great game coinciding with the great game of the former Hokie running back. On Thursday, Hanson connected on all four field goal chances, including a 52 yard attempt, and both extra points. With Jones back producing, Hanson is a strong kicker option going forward.
PK Sebastian Janikowski, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - In leagues that award more points for long field goals, Janikowski's leg strength is an advantage. He made both of his field goal attempts yesterday, including a booming 54-yarder -- his fourth 50+ yard field goal of the season.
PK Josh Scobee, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Welcome back, Josh Scobee. After missing several weeks, Scobee has burst back onto the scene with 24 points in two games. Since returning in week 11, he has booted six FGs and six PATs without a miss.
Downgrade
PK Mike Nugent, NYJ - Mike Nugent is not getting many opportunities to score with the ineptitude of the New York Jet offense. He only has 23 field goal attempts through eleven games, making 18. In addition, the former Buckeye kicker has converted all 17 extra point chances. Yes, he may have games, like in week eleven against Pittsburgh, with a few field goal opportunities, but those games are rare. Four of Nugent's 18 made field goals were in week eleven. This leaves 14 made field goals in the other ten games. This is not good for fantasy production.
PK Dave Rayner, KC - Dave Rayner is really struggling lately. Over the last four weeks, he has scored more than five points only once. He has also been inaccurate with five misses out of nine FG attempts.

Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Chicago Bears, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Chicago Bears defense and special teams had a big day, anchored by the huge day of Devin Hester. Against the Denver Broncos in week eleven, the Bears sacked Jay Cutler twice, both by Ogunleye. They also picked Cutler off twice and recovered two fumbles. But, the star of the game was Hester. In the third quarter, with the Chicago Bears down, the former Miami Hurricane ran back a 75-yard punt return and an 88-yard kick return for touchdowns. The Bear special teams also blocked a punt. The Bears defense/special teams is a must start every week with the threat of Hester.
TD Cincinnati Bengals, CIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Bengals shut down the Tennessee Titans in Week 12, yielding only 10 first downs and 305 total yards. They forced two turnovers (one INT and one fumble) and one sack, holding Tennessee to just six points. With a nice playoff schedule (KC and NYJ in Weeks 15 and 16), they could be worth adding.
TD Cleveland Browns, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Browns held the Texans to 17 points in a game that many thought would be a shootout. They yielded just 16 first downs and forced three turnovers and got a sack against Houston. With good matchups in December, especially in Weeks 14-16 (Jets, Bills, Bengals), the Browns could be a nice defense to have on your fantasy squad.
TD Jacksonville Jaguars, JAX - The Jags have held their last three opponents and eight of their last eleven to 17 points or less. The Jaguars aren't great in any one defensive category, but they excel overall.
TD Green Bay Packers, GB - The Green Bay Packers are upgraded again. They are simply playing great defense. The Packer defense is seventh in the NFL, yielding just 185 points in eleven games. They intercepted one of Jon Kitna's passes and sacked the veteran passer four times. Green and Gold have top-notch corner backs and are tough to run on. The next game, against the Dallas Cowboys, will be a huge test for the Green Bay Packer defense. Can they contain Tony Romo, not letting him out of the pocket? Can they hold Terrell Owens in check? This game will tell whether the Packers, and their defense, are for real.
TD Washington Redskins, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Redskins turned up the defensive pressure against Tampa Bay in Week 12, especially in the second half. Washington held the Bucs to just 192 team yards and nine first downs just when they needed a strong effort. Despite giving up 19 points as a team, Washington was often defending a short field due to four team fumbles. The Redskins have several favorable matchups the rest of the way starting with Buffalo in Week 13 and could be a nice addition to fantasy teams looking for an upgrade.
TD Minnesota Vikings, MIN - The Minnesota Vikings defense had a great game against Eli Manning and the Giants. To say that the Viking defense made plays would be an understatement. They intercepted Eli Manning four times and sacked him three more times. Three of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Darren Sharper picked off Peyton's little brother in the first quarter and returned it for a score. Dwight Smith and Chad Greenway each scored off of interceptions in the fourth quarter. It was a great day for the Minnesota Vikings defense.
Downgrade
TD Buffalo Bills, BUF - The Buffalo Bills defense was playing well, but looked inept against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The defense yielded 36 points and could not cause a turnover in the week twelve game. The Bills got one sack, but that was the only fantasy point earned by the Buffalo defense.
TD Baltimore Ravens, BAL - The Ravens are not that good on defense -- they just aren't this season. Giving up 32 points to San Diego could be nothing compared to what might be coming as the Ravens faced New England in Week 13. Look for better options for your fantasy team defense.
TD Tennessee Titans, TEN - The Titans appear to be a completely different team without Albert Haynesworth in the lineup. Haynesworth who is still recovering from a hamstring injury was inactive for the third week in a row, all Titans losses. With Haynesworth they stand, without him they fall. At least that's what the going opinion is.
Holding steady
TD New York Giants, NYG - Okay, yes, the Giants gave up 41 points to the Vikings in Week 12 -- but look beyond the scoreboard. New York only gave up 14 first downs and 251 yards as they collected four sacks. More importantly, 21 of those 41 points came with the Giants' offense on the field. Do not sweat this game if you have the Giants defense.
