Quarterback
Upgrade
QB John Beck, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rookie John Beck finally got the start this week. This move was expected for a while now. The Dolphins need to know what they have in the older rookie. He was not overly effective against the Eagles, but is now the starter in Miami. The former BYU star finished the game completing nine of 22 passes for 109 yards against a good Philadelphia defense. The rookie should improve next week.
QB Tom Brady, NE - Tom Brady was at it again, hooking up with Randy Moss early and often. Brady completed 31 of 39 passes for 373 yards and five touchdowns. These numbers would have been even higher, but the former Wolverine was pulled in the middle of the final quarter because the score was out of hand. Tom Brady now has a touchdown to interception ration of 38 to four.
QB Jason Campbell, WAS - Campbell topped his Week 10 performance by putting up his best ever statistics against Dallas in Week 11. Campbell broke 300 yards and threw for two touchdowns, racking up 348 yards and playing nearly flawless offense until the waning moments where he attempted to engineer a final scoring drive and was intercepted. Campbell hit multiple receivers and got Santana Moss involved again, working the ball to him, Cooley and even Keenan McCardell and Antwaan Randle El as they all had at least five catches and 50 yards each. The Redskins face a tough challenge next week in Tampa Bay, but Campbell is quickly becoming a mature NFL QB.
QB Brodie Croyle, KC -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - In his first career start, Croyle completed 19 of 27 pass attempts (70%) for 169 yards and a touchdown (no interceptions). He showed a strong arm, good accuracy, and nice touch, and did not force the ball into coverage. He has a moderately difficult schedule over the next four weeks, but it is worth noting that he faces the subpar Detroit pass defense in week 16. With Dwayne Bowe, Tony Gonzalez, and Priest Holmes to throw to, Croyle could make a decent fill-in as a fantasy QB for the rest of this season if you need one.
QB Daunte Culpepper, OAK - Culpepper three for 344 yards, a touchdown, and an interception yesterday while completing 23 of 39 pass attempts. That was only the second 300-yard game of the season for the Raiders (the first was by Josh McCown in week one), as the team is averaging only 157 passing yards per game. Culpepper made effective use of his wide receivers, and could put up another nice game or two before giving way to JaMarcus Russell.
QB Trent Dilfer, SF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Trent Dilfer started week 11 for the injured Alex Smith and might keep the job for the remainder of the season as Smith is really ailing right now.
QB Brett Favre, GB - Brett Favre continues his torrid pace to be a top five fantasy passer in week eleven against the Carolina Panthers. Favre is spreading the ball around to several receivers and taking what the defense gives him. The aging superstar finished the game converting 22 of his 30 pass attempts for 218 yards and three touchdown passes.
QB Jeff Garcia, TB - Garcia is holding steady with 159 yards passing and 2 TDs. He only has 11 TD passes on the season with five games of less than 200 yards passing, but he's consistently making plays when it counts. That has to count for something. The reason for the upgrade? Don't look now, but Tampa Bay has a great schedule for the playoff run of weeks 14, 15 and 16 (@HOU, ATL, @SF). Garcia might be a nice play for the home stretch, including your playoffs.
QB David Garrard, JAX - Garrard returned this week from his injured ankle as expected, and he didn't disappoint. While he only passed for 189 yards, he threw two TD passes and still has not thrown an INT in seven starts this season.
QB Rex Grossman, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Rex Grossman reclaimed the starting job in week eleven. Even though his play earlier in the year was not stellar, it is becoming clear that it was not all his fault. Grossman looked pretty good managing the game. The one bad play was the fourth quarter fumble. The former Gator finished the game completing 24 of 37 passes for 266 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Rex was fairly efficient and careful, other than the fumble. He also added 13 yards on the ground on four carries.
QB Joey Harrington, ATL - Joey Harrington finds himself again an upgrade heading into next week's game. Byron Leftwich did nothing impressive in a blowout home loss to division rival Tampa Bay on Sunday. As a result, the Falcons benched him in favor of Joey Harrington. It is unclear if Harrington will start next week, but before the crushing loss this week, Harrington and the Falcons were winners of two straight. Atlanta has a tough match up next week against the Colts, so don't expect huge numbers if Harrington does get the nod.
QB Matt Hasselbeck, SEA - Hasselbeck is on a roll, having thrown for 300+ yards in three out of his last five games, and having thrown multiple touchdown passes in all five of those games, and in seven out of the last eight. Hasselbeck was his efficient self, completing 30 of 44 pass attempts for 337 yards and two touchdowns (no interceptions). Meanwhile, Deion Branch returned to the lineup, giving him his full compliment of primary receivers (Branch, Hackett, Engram) for the first time since week one.
QB Tarvaris Jackson, MIN -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Tarvaris Jackson is finally healthy. He is not a great fantasy player, but could help a quarterback-starved team. He was much more efficient against the Raiders than earlier in the season. Jackson was 17 for 22 for 171 passing yards and an interception. He added 19 yards on three carries. The second-year pro showed much more promise than before he was injured. This game was a positive sign for Jackson fantasy owners.
QB Jon Kitna, DET - Jon Kitna had not passed for over 300 yards in some time. However, with the ineffectiveness of the run game, Kitna threw for 377 yards on 28 for 43 passing on Sunday. The former Bengal added on touchdown and three interceptions. The good news is that this game came against a strong New York Giants pass defense, featuring a great pass rush. Fantasy owners are happy about the production, but it all revolves around the 43 passing attempts. He now has 2673 passing yards 13 touchdowns through ten games.
QB Tony Romo, DAL - Tony Romo has thrown for multiple touchdowns in 9 of 10 starts this season, including Week 11's contest against the Redskins. Romo posted good stats (22-32-293-4-1) as he connected with Terrell Owens for four scores on Sunday, keeping up his pace to throw for 40 touchdowns this season. Romo's remarkable year would be major news if it weren't for a certain other quarterback wearing patriotic colors and boasting even more impressive numbers, but Romo's season is worth mentioning as well. Expect Romo to throw for 12-15 more TDs the rest of the season including Thanksgiving's tilt with the Jets.
QB JaMarcus Russell, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - With the Raiders sitting at 2-8, it will very soon be time to see what the rookie QB can do. Expect Russell to move into the starting lineup within a few weeks.
QB Matt Schaub, HOU - As predicted, the return of Andre Johnson elevated Matt Schaub's game. Schaub finished with 293 yards and 2 TDs. Houston has a favorable schedule in the next few weeks, but the stretch for the fantasy playoffs isn't exactly easy (TB, DEN, @IND).
QB Kurt Warner, ARI - The Cardinals' offense has come alive over the past two weeks, as Kurt Warner has thrown five touchdown passes over that span, and could keep up the pace as his next two games are against the 49ers and the Browns. After facing the Seahawks in week 14, he then gets the Saints the following week -- so three out of his next four games present good matchups.
Downgrade
QB David Carr, CAR - Vinny Testaverde appears to be the QB of choice for Carolina, who just cannot seem to find any answers on offense. David Carr was healthy for the game against Green Bay, but he sat in favor of the more experienced Vinny Testaverde. This does not bode well for future games. However, the likelihood of Testaverde staying healthy for the remainder of the season is like asking the burly-armed referee Ed Hochuli to not wear short-sleeves to ref his games. In other words, it probably won't happen.
QB Byron Leftwich, ATL - It appears as if Byron Leftwich isn't quite the answer at QB for Atlanta. Leftwich had a miserable return throwing two interceptions and no TDs. He was replaced in the third quarter by Joey Harrington. There definitely must be something amiss if you're benched in favor of Joey Harrington. It is unclear who will start at QB for Atlanta next week, but things don't look too promising for Leftwich.
QB Cleo Lemon, MIA - Cleo Lemon finally gave way to rookie Jon Beck this week. This is a move expected for a few weeks. Lemon did not play especially well for the Dolphins, but he had limited weapons after the trade of Chris Chambers and injury to Ronnie Brown. Cleo could regain the job later in the season if Beck plays horribly or is injured.
QB Peyton Manning, IND - The Colts have played two bad games in a row and have lost two of their last three, which could easily be three straight losses. The great Peyton Manning appears to be struggling offensively without his normal options available to him. Sunday, Manning had only 163 yards passing and did not throw a TD pass. The injury to Marvin Harrison is really taking a toll on the Colts offense. Teams are figuring out how to stop Reggie Wayne and in doing that, Peyton has fewer reliable targets in which to throw to. The result is successfully slowing down Manning. We don't condone benching Manning due to his favorable match up next week at Atlanta, but temper your expectations with him for the rest of the season until he and the Colts' offense returns to form.
QB Josh McCown, OAK - It looks like McCown's time has passed. The Raiders will start Daunte Culpepper for now and will soon turn to rookie JaMarcus Russell.
QB Sage Rosenfels, HOU - With Schaub back and healthy, Rosenfels takes a back seat. Injuries have peppered Schaub this season so far, so it's possible we still could see Rosenfels in action again at some point.
QB Alex Smith, SF - Alex Smith is still recovering from a separated shoulder and now has forearm issues. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him miss the rest of the season.
Holding steady
QB Derek Anderson, CLE - Anderson did just enough against the Ravens to earn the victory in another unspectacular performance, but he continues to get Cleveland wins. Anderson had respectable numbers (24-38-274-0-1) but no touchdowns, although he did add one on a QB sneak on a short goal line situation. Anderson's one mistake was a big one, throwing an interception to LB Ray Lewis who ran it back for a touchdown, but he moved the Browns downfield on several longer drives with very accurate passes. Anderson faces much more favorable pass defenses the rest of the way and should continue to put up good numbers which will become great again once the TDs come back into play.
QB Drew Brees, NO - Brees and the Saints lost their second game in a row, but Brees passed for 290 yards with a TD pass. As long as he's putting up the yards, he should continue to be a strong fantasy start each week. Continue to start Brees unless you have a better option.
QB Brian Griese, CHI - Brian Griese returned to Bears practice this past Thursday as a backup to Rex Grossman. Griese's shoulder injury never really threatened his status for week eleven. Rex Grossman was promoted because the former Wolverine did not help the Bears to more wins. Coach Lovie Smith says his QB position will be evaluated weekly, so there is always a possibility Griese will regain his job.
QB Donovan McNabb, PHI - McNabb looked like he was going to have a very good start to his Week 11 effort against the Miami Dolphins, throwing a big flea-flicker to Reggie Brown for a touchdown. Unfortunately for McNabb the play was lost to a penalty, and it was all downhill from there. McNabb completed just 3 of 11 passes for 34 yards and had two ugly interceptions to kill first half drives. He did show good mobility as he scrambled for 28 total yards on two tries, but ultimately McNabb left the game with a sprained ankle. X-rays were negative and McNabb should be back next week, but that means the Patriots in New England next Sunday night, so you may want to examine other QB options for a spot start.
QB Carson Palmer, CIN - Palmer put up some decent numbers (37-52-329-2-4) but it was dampened by the four INTs. Palmer was throwing all game to try and keep pace with Arizona and also his own mistakes, as two of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Palmer nearly had more than four picks as the Cardinals had their hands on several other passes in Week 11. Look for Palmer to bounce back and correct the mistakes against several nice matchups the rest of the way.
QB Vinny Testaverde, CAR - Testaverde started over a healthy David Carr, but he faced a difficult opponent in Green Bay on Sunday. While he racked up 258 yards passing with two TDs, he also threw two INTs, including one in the end zone. The Panthers lost the game, but it's looking more and more like Vinny is the QB of choice for HC John Fox, regardless of the health of David Carr.
Running Back
Upgrade
RB Michael Bush, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The rookie fifth-round pick began the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to the broken leg he suffered in the first game of the 2006 season at Louisville. He has been practicing with the Raiders for the past two weeks, and will likely be activated by the November 21 deadline. Once activated, Bush would likely back up Justin Fargas, but could get decent playing time toward the end of the season.
RB Najeh Davenport, PIT - Davenport is getting more involved in Pittsburgh's offense both as a rusher and as a receiver. Davenport was 8-39 on the ground and 4-22 as a receiver as he is getting not just third down work but also passing and goal line situational work. Davenport's value is rising as he looks to be more effective in helping the Steelers move the ball, convert first downs and also punch it across the goal line.
RB Ron Dayne, HOU - With Ahman Green out indefinitely, Ron Dayne becomes the starting back for Houston. Dayne had 89 yards rushing and 26 yards receiving on three receptions.
RB Reuben Droughns, NYG - Droughns moved up the depth chart for the Giants with Derrick Ward unable to practice, and now with an injury to Brandon Jacobs this week, Droughns could find himself as the feature tailback next week for New York. Droughns did not do much with his 14 touches against the Detroit Lions in Week 11 (11-13 rushing, 3-26 receiving) but he will be a hot pickup off of the waiver wire if Jacobs cannot start in Week 12 against Minnesota.
RB Kyle Eckel, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Kyle Eckel helped fill the void after the Faulk and Maroney injuries. The tough inside runner carried the ball ten times for forty yards and a scoring run. Eckel also had a six-yard run. The physical inside runner looked good filling in for Kevin Faulk and Laurence Maroney.
RB Heath Evans, NE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Heath Evans saw increased action against the Buffalo Bills with the injuries to Kevin Faulk and Laurence Maroney. Evans is a tough runner and will see increased action if Faulk misses any time. The physical ball carrier had ten carries for 56 yards. He added ten yards two catches. If Maroney or Faulk are out for a while, Evans could be a spot starter for some fantasy owners.
RB Earnest Graham, TB - Graham had his second 100-yard game in a row this week against Atlanta. He has at least 10 fantasy points in five of his ten games this season. He continues to be a quality fantasy start and his fantasy playoff schedule is looking very cushy - @HOU, ATL, @SF.
RB Priest Holmes, KC - Holmes was pedestrian on Sunday, rushing 19 times for 55 yards. The reason for this upgrade is that Holmes will face the Oakland Raiders this week, who have not been able to shut down an opposing RB all season. (Their best effort, by far, was holding Jamal Lewis to 78 yards from scrimmage with no touchdowns. Every other starting RB has gotten at least 100 rushing yards and/or a rushing TD against them. Through ten games, opposing teams' starting RBs have averaged 121 rushing yards and 1.2 TDs against the Raiders.) Moreover, while Larry Johnson has stated that he will return to the lineup this season, the extent of the swelling has thus far prevented a complete diagnosis, and according to Fox Sports, people inside the Chiefs' organization remain generally pessimistic about Johnson's chances to return this year.
RB Brandon Jackson, GB - Brandon Jackson could be the primary beneficiary if the injury to Ryan Grant is serious. The rookie from Nebraska only had three carries for 13 yards. Jackson has not looked great, but could mature with more work. If Grant were out for any time, Jackson would get most of the carries.
RB Steven Jackson, STL - Jackson rushed 23 times for 92 yards yesterday, adding another 20 yards from scrimmage on four receptions. After scoring in each of the two previous games, he failed to get into the end zone against the 49ers, but faces a fairly RB-friendly schedule over the next three weeks (Seahawks, Falcons, Bengals).
RB Jamal Lewis, CLE - Jamal Lewis returned to Baltimore for the first time as a Cleveland Brown with a determined effort to show that he was still an NFL feature tailback. Lewis ran 22 times for 92 yards and a score against the Ravens, adding four receptions for an additional 30 yards. If Lewis can accumulate these kinds of impressive totals against a pretty good run defense, Lewis should continue to have 100+ total yard games in many of his starts the rest of the season (providing he can stay healthy of course).
RB Maurice Morris, SEA - Morris rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown yesterday, filling in for an injured Shaun Alexander. While Alexander may suit up for this week's game against the Rams, Morris should still see plenty of action, as he has been more effective than Alexander this season. Alexander has appeared sluggish, even when healthy, and Morris provides a spark to the offense that had been lacking.
RB Jerious Norwood, ATL - Norwood returned to action in week 11 against the Buccaneers, but he saw very little of the field rushing only twice for 4 yards with two receptions for 10 yards. His playing time should increase in the coming weeks, because his coaches want to know what they have in him. If you're waiting for him to come alive, you should find out in the next few games.
RB Michael Pittman, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Pittman chipped in with 10 carries for 44 yards against the Falcons, but the primary RB role is Earnest Graham's. Pittman still has the ability to add receiving stats to his fantasy scorecard, so he should not be forgotten. In the event Earnest Graham goes down with an injury, Pittman could be an outstanding fill-in, especially with an inviting fantasy playoff schedule that includes @HOU, ATL, @SF in weeks 14-16.
RB Kolby Smith, KC -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Smith didn't look too hot against the Colts, but he certainly has a role with Larry Johnson sidelined. Smith had eight carries and three receptions for 51 total yards. Against a weak defense, he could be viable.
RB Chester Taylor, MIN - Chester Taylor filled in quite nicely for rookie sensation, Adrian Peterson, against the Oakland Raiders. Yes, it was against a poor run defense, but Chester Taylor played very well. The former starter was able to get into the endzone with ease. He had 22 carries for 164 rushing yards and three touchdown runs. Taylor also had three catches for 38 yards. This was a great game for the former Raven.
RB Anthony Thomas, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Anthony Thomas got the start against the Patriots. The straight-ahead runner looked pretty good against a tough New England defense. The former Bear had 31 yards on eleven carries and 15 additional yards three receptions. If Lynch were to miss a few more games, Anthony Thomas could be a decent flex player. The Bills rely on the running game and a strong defense. But, even though many like rookie Dwayne Wright, Thomas is the primary backup to Marshawn Lynch.
RB Kenny Watson, CIN - If there was still any doubt, Week 11 should have answered the question as to which Bengals RB is the top cat. Watson had 17 touches (9-45 rushing, 8-50 receiving) and looked far more effective in the Cincinnati offense. Watson should remain the back of choice and get the bulk of the work going forward.
RB Ricky Williams, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - HC Cam Cameron was quoted as saying Ricky Williams will begin practicing with the team this Monday and could play against the Steelers in Week 12 on Monday Night Football. Ricky has appeared in just 12 games since 2003. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Cameron said. "He hasn't played football in awhile. We're going to take this one day at a time." The Dolphins could be playing the former Texas star with thoughts of trading him in the offseason. If so, this is good news for Ricky owners going forward.
RB Dwayne Wright, BUF -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Dwayne Wright is a player to keep an eye on with Marshawn Lynch sidelined with the ankle injury. The rookie from Fresno State is a bigger ball carrier, but has good vision. He got his first carry at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Wright had a fumble returned for a touchdown by Ellis Hobbs of the Patriots. He had one yard rushing on one carry and a five-yard catch.
Downgrade
RB Shaun Alexander, SEA - Alexander did not play in yesterday's game. He had been ineffective pretty much all season, and is currently nursing a knee injury that kept him from practicing much of last week. With Maurice Morris running with more burst than Alexander this season, head coach Mike Holmgren does not appear to be in a hurry to return Alexander to the lineup. He has stated that Alexander will not start until he can practice at full speed for a full week.
RB Warrick Dunn, ATL - If your team scores only seven points, the RB likely didn't do much. That was the case with Atlanta and Warrick Dunn this week against division rival front-runner, Tampa Bay. Dunn finished with just 32 yards rushing on 15 carries. He did have 8 receptions for 40 yards, so it wasn't that bad of a performance. He has been up and down this season and it appears to be in conjunction with the success of the team. Jerious Norwood did see some action in the game, returning from an injured ankle, so now his name enters the fray as a possible reason for losing carries in future games.
RB Kevin Faulk, NE - Kevin Faulk had to leave the game against the Bills with an apparent head injury. Before then, he caught two passes for 18 yards. With the injury to Sammy Morris, Faulk is an integral member of the Patriot offense. The former LSU Tiger will be missed if he is down for any amount of time.
RB Ryan Grant, GB - Ryan Grant seemed to suffer a sprained ankle in week eleven against the Carolina Panthers. Grant says he will be fine by Thursday, but with the short week to heal this week, the injury could be a situation for fantasy owners to monitor. In the game, the former Golden Domer finished the game with 88 yards on 20 carries and one catch for to yards.
RB Ahman Green, HOU - Ahman Green continues to have problems with his injured knee. It's getting to the point of him possibly not being able to return to action this season. He has had plenty of time to rest his knee, but it's continuing to bother him after attempting to practice. That doesn't sound well at all. We wouldn't be surprised if we hear season-ending news coming from the Texans about Green's knee in the coming days.
RB Larry Johnson, KC - Johnson was inactive for the second consecutive game on Sunday after suffering a foot injury in week nine. The Chiefs have not released a detailed diagnosis of the injury, nor a timetable for Johnson's return, apparently because Johnson's foot has been too swollen to make an accurate diagnosis. The swelling has subsided and Johnson is scheduled for further tests this week that should clarify the extent of his injury. Johnson maintains that he will return to the field this season, but according to Fox Sports, people inside the Chiefs' organization remain generally pessimistic about Johnson's chances to return this season.
RB Rudi Johnson, CIN - If there was still any doubt, Week 11 should have answered the question as to which Bengals RB is the top cat. Rudi Johnson gets the short straw here as he had only nine touches (8-25 rushing, 1-2 receiving) and looked much less impressive than Kenny Watson. Johnson could still get some work, but expect most of the touches and opportunity to now rest with Watson.
RB Kevin Jones, DET - Kevin Jones admits he aggravated his injury in Week 10 against the Cardinals. Jones said he tweaked his surgically repaired foot while being tackled from behind and the injury bothered him the rest of the game. He only had eleven carries and three receptions in week eleven. The former Hokie had only 25 yards on the ground and 12 yards through the air.
RB LaMont Jordan, OAK - Jordan was inactive yesterday, and there are reports that he may be released if Michael Bush is activated from the PUP list this week. Even if he is not released, it appears that Jordan no longer fits into the Raiders' plans this season.
RB Marshawn Lynch, BUF - Marshawn Lynch was limping at the end of the week ten game against the Miami Dolphins. He was ruled out of the week eleven game against New England a few days ago. The ankle injury is described as one that could linger for multiple weeks. Lynch had been playing well as a rookie.
RB Laurence Maroney, NE - Laurence Maroney left the week eleven game against the Buffalo Bills with an apparent sprained ankle injury as reported Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe. He finished the game with six carries for 19 yards and a scoring run. The injury is not considered serious, but it is something to monitor.
RB Willie Parker, PIT - Willie Parker struggled against a seemingly good matchup in Week 11. Parker rushed 21 times for just 52 yards when Pittsburgh visited the New York Jets and also failed to catch any passes this past Sunday. The Steelers removed Parker on several occasions in favor of Najeh Davenport, further reducing Parker's ability to contribute to the offense. Parker is still a must start fantasy back for most rosters, but until he finds the end zone and/or breaks 100 yards again he will be subject to intense scrutiny.
RB Adrian Peterson, MIN - Adrian Peterson sprained his knee in the week ten contest against the Packers, and no one is certain of how long he will be out. The rookie from Oklahoma was on pace to rush for over 2,000 yards. Peterson is reported to be back in time for the fantasy playoffs, but it is unknown when or if that will happen.
Holding steady
RB Joseph Addai, IND - Addai added another rushing TD to his total this week against Kansas City. He now has eight rushing TDs and two receiving TDs. He continues to produce big numbers once again with over 100 yards of total offense including the one TD run. Continue to start Addai every week in all formats.
RB Marion Barber III, DAL - Barber did not get a lot of work in Week 11, but that was mostly due to Tony Romo clicking so well with Terrell Owens in the passing game. Barber had more carries (again) than Julius Jones and he remains the Cowboy RB to own in fantasy football. He has a great matchup coming on Thanksgiving when the Jets come to Dallas, so keep him in your lineup.
RB Cedric Benson, CHI - Cedric Benson started off the week eleven game with a bang. His first two carries were a 43 yards touchdown and a 20 yard rush. For the rest of the game, the former Longhorn had just 26 yards on nine carries. In total, the Bear running back rushed 11 times for 89 yards and the touchdown. One thing fantasy owners need to watch is the fact that Adrian Peterson had five carries. With the way Benson has played this year, combined with the Bears' record, Peterson might get more looks. To make matters worse, Cedric Benson leads NFL running backs in dropped passes.
RB Reggie Bush, NO - Bush didn't do much on the ground this week against Houston (34 yards on 15 carries), but he did have 12 receptions for 70 yards. Bush failed to score a TD for just the second time in his last five games. He remains a quality fantasy start in all leagues, but don't expect him to average 20 carries a game the rest of the way.
RB T.J. Duckett, DET - T.J. Duckett did not touch the ball this week, even with Kevin Jones still limited with the foot injury. Still, the former local star at Michigan State is the backup to back that isn't completely healthy. If Jones misses any time, Duckett is a player that could provide fantasy owners with a solid running back for the fantasy playoffs.
RB Justin Fargas, OAK - Fargas did not end up with impressive box score figures yesterday, rushing for just 60 yards on 22 carries. But he is not the first runner to be swarmed by the Vikings' stout run defense this year, and while he had little room to run for most of the day, he did run hard and showed a quick burst on a few scampers. Fargas remains the team's starting RB, as Dominic Rhodes is being used primarily as a kickoff returner, and Lamont Jordan was inactive for the game (and may be released if Michael Bush is activated this week).
RB DeShaun Foster, CAR - Foster continues to be consistent. His 20-carry, 87-yard effort and one catch for 21 yards is his seventh game of at least 50 yards rushing in nine contests this season. He also has at least one reception in every game this season. There's nothing wrong with consistency, but sooner or later he needs some more 100-yard games to garner a fantasy start every week.
RB Brandon Jacobs, NYG - Jacobs had a pretty good game (11-54 rushing, 4-49 receiving with a 10-yard TD) and would be a candidate for an upgrade - but there's a huge "but" coming. Jacobs left the game in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury, so if he cannot play next week he should be downgraded. Place him in the "hold tight" for now, but keep a wary eye at that injury report and if you have a bench spot available, grab Reuben Droughns for insurance.
RB Thomas Jones, NYJ - Thomas Jones had a great game, for him. Could this be a sign of things to come? Could it just be a lucky game? The former Bear had 30 carries for 117 and one catch for seven yards. It is not a coincidence that the Jets win a big game when Jones ran for over a hundred yards. The sad part is that even in a good game, Jones could not average four yards per carry in a good game. Jones owners are still waiting for a touchdown.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX - Drew had only 13 touches in the game against San Diego, but he did manage to score on a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter. We love RBs who score first quarter TDs, but the Jags continue to use both Fred Taylor and Jones-Drew in their running game. The result - some great games here and there, but each back remains consistently inconsistent. While Jones-Drew has been producing, he remains a debatable start every week, especially if you have alternative options that are equally as productive.
RB Clinton Portis, WAS - Portis only had 11 carries for 36 yards against the Cowboys in Week 11. Dallas took away the ground game as they wanted to make Washington try and throw to beat them, which they nearly did. Portis remains the primary ball carrier for the Redskins and he should become much more of a factor in more favorable matchups later on the schedule.
Wide Receiver
Upgrade
WR Bernard Berrian, CHI - Bernard Berrian likes it when Rex Grossman is under center. The former Fresno State star finished the game against the Seahawks with nine catches for 102 yards. The big arm of Grossman fits the speedy Berrian. As long as Grossman starts, Berrian has a good chance to produce good fantasy points.
WR Deion Branch, SEA - Branch finally made it back to the field in week 11. He produced 84 yards on eight receptions. While Branch didn't find the endzone, he will be a nice fantasy option as the Seahawks have become very pass-happy on offense.
WR Drew Carter, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Amidst the offensive woes for Carolina, Drew Carter turned in an impressive performance against Green Bay and their stellar cornerback tandem of Charles Woodson and Al Harris. Carter finished with five receptions for 132 yards and a TD. Carter now has four TDs this year and at least five catches in each of his last three games. Not bad for a Carolina WR not named Steve Smith. If you're desperate at WR, Drew Carter is a nice pick up, especially if Smith's injury keeps him sidelined for another week.
WR Chris Chambers, SD - Chambers continues to become a bigger part of the Chargers' offense after coming over in a week seven trade from the Dolphins. Chambers finished with 4 catches for 93 yards yesterday, including several highlight-worthy grabs on key third down plays. He had two other receptions (for 19 yards and 10 yards) called back due to penalties, one of which was for offensive pass interference on Chambers himself, but the call appeared questionable. Chambers appears to have become Rivers' favorite third-down target and is the clear WR1 at this point for the Chargers.
WR Marques Colston, NO - Colston had 9 catches for 118 yards and now has 35 of his 62 total receptions in his last four games. He has reached 100 yards receiving in each of his last three games, but he doesn't have a TD in any of those contests. He has five scores, but three of them came in one game - against San Francisco.
WR Ronald Curry, OAK - Curry got deep twice early in the game yesterday, hauling in passes for 46 and 49 yards on his first two targets. The 49-yarder was a highlight reel grab in which he outmuscled two defenders for the ball, maintaining his concentration on the ball even as his helmet popped off. He finished the day with four catches for 120 yards, and leads the Raiders in receptions and receiving yards on the season.
WR Devard Darling, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Devard Darling stepped in for the injured Demetrius Williams and had 107 yards and a touchdown on four receptions in Week 11. He was a big contributor against Cleveland in the fourth quarter, grabbing a 27-yard score to tie the game. Darling had just two catches before Sunday but could see more action as Baltimore is very thin at wide receiver.
WR Larry Fitzgerald, ARI - After scoring only one touchdown through the first eight games of the season, Fitzgerald has scored three of them in the last two weeks. He finished with 8 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown yesterday against the Bengals, and has good matchups coming in three out of the next four weeks (SF in week 12, CLE in week 13, NO in week 15). Fitzgerald's touchdown yesterday was an athletic grab in the back of the end zone, showing excellent footwork to remain in bounds.
WR Ted Ginn, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Ted Ginn seems to be the primary beneficiary of the Miami quarterback chance. The former Buckeye had almost half of Beck's completions and yards with four receptions for 52 yards. Ginn had not done much going into the game so this is a good sign for Ginn fantasy owners. Ginn is still returning kickoffs and punts, giving him extra value in some leagues.
WR D.J. Hackett, SEA - Even with the return of Deion Branch to the lineup, Hackett was Hasselbeck's favorite target yesterday, catching 9 passes on 13 targets for 136 yards and a touchdown. He dropped a pass in the end zone at the end of the first half, or his stat line would be even more impressive. Hasselbeck will spread the ball around between Branch, Engram, and Hackett, so Hackett will not lead the team in receptions every week. But it is nice to see his potential in this offense, as he has now gone over 100 yards and scored a touchdown in each of the past two games.
WR Chris Henry, CIN - Chris Henry looks like he never had any time off at all as he snared eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown in Week 11 against the Cardinals. Henry has 180 yards and a touchdown in the last two weeks and could be in line to get even more work if the late game injury to T.J. Houshmandzadeh costs him any time. Look for Henry to get more targets going forward as the Bengals start to have better matchups after next week's Tennessee game.
WR Santonio Holmes, PIT - Holmes had another game that makes you wonder if he has become the #1 wide receiver for Pittsburgh or if he is still the "1A" option to Hines Ward. Holmes had five receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown on a designed WR screen in the Red Zone. Ben Roethlisberger looks extremely comfortable when throwing in his direction and Holmes is delivering great performances. Holmes also has a great matchup next week against the Miami Dolphins.
WR Torry Holt, STL - Holt had his third strong fantasy performance in a row yesterday, as he caught 7 passes for 55 yards and hauled in the game's only touchdown. He also had a 21-yard reception called back on a holding penalty in the second quarter. Holt looks fully recovered from the knee injury that slowed him early in the season, and should continue to perform well down the stretch.
WR Dwayne Jarrett, CAR -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Last week we saw a glimpse of Dwayne Jarrett, this week we saw a little bit more, including another target in the end zone. Jarrett is starting to come along and if the season continues to spiral downward for Carolina, we may see more and more of Jarrett.
WR Michael Jenkins, ATL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Jenkins had a career-high nine receptions on Sunday against the Buccaneers and this was the fourth game this season for him in which he has totaled six receptions or more in a game. Jenkins replaced Roddy White as the go-to WR for Atlanta in this game. Whether or not that will continue is yet to be determined. He wasn't so much as a deep threat, in that his longest reception was only 14 yards, but nine catches is nine catches.
WR Greg Jennings, GB - Greg Jennings found the endzone again this week. The second year receiver has been able to score regularly this season. The former Western Michigan star caught seven Favre passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Jennings now has seven touchdown receptions this season. He is definitely a budding star in the league.
WR Andre Johnson, HOU - Johnson returned to the lineup this week against New Orleans after suffering a knee injury in week three at Carolina. It didn't take long for him to pickup where he left off. He hauled in a 73-yard TD reception in the first quarter. He finished with 6 catches for 120 yards. This is his third game this season and in each game he has reached at least 120 yards with at least one TD. Start him with confidence every week in all formats.
WR Chad Johnson, CIN - Johnson returned to form and caught eight passes for 86 yards in Week 11 and could possibly have had a touchdown if it was not for a fumble inside of Arizona's 10-yard line. Should T.J. Houshmandzadeh's injury cost him some time, look for Johnson to get more targets going forward as the Bengals start to have better matchups after next week's Tennessee game.
WR Joe Jurevicius, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Browns keep on moving the ball via the passing attack, and while Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow, Jr. get most of the attention. Joe Jurevicius continues to put up solid numbers as the third target. Jurevicius put up a nice stat line (4-82) in Week 11 against the Cardinals, boosted by his short catch that he turned into a 50 yard gain. He has caught at least four passes in four straight games and he remains a nice WR to have on your bench for depth.
WR Keenan McCardell, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Washington had to move the ball against a tough Dallas team in Week 11, and with the running game sputtering the Redskins took to the air. McCardell elevated his game and hauled in five balls for 76 total yards, a solid effort that may continue going forward as Washington is not deep at wide receiver. McCardell appears to be the third WR option for the Redskins, and if they need to throw often in a matchup then McCardell can produce.
WR Shaun McDonald, DET - Shaun McDonald had a big game against the Giants in week eleven. The former Arizona State star has enjoyed several strong games in a row with at least five receptions and over fifty receiving yards. Against New York, the five-year pro had seven catches for 132 yards. Shaun is a player to watch for the fantasy playoffs, especially in PPR leagues.
WR Randy Moss, NE - Randy Moss was Tom Brady's favorite target in the week eleven matchup against the Buffalo Bills. The former Marshall star had ten catches for 128 yards and four touchdowns. Through ten games, Moss has 66 catches for 1052 yards and 16 touchdowns. Randy Moss has been unstoppable this season after the poor stay in Oakland.
WR Santana Moss, WAS - Just a few days ago, many were wondering if Moss could even suit up and play against Dallas in Week 11. "Dallas Week" is a big rivalry for the Redskins, and Moss brought his "A game" in Week 11, going 9-121-1 as the main wide receiver including a highlight reel one-handed catch along the sideline in close coverage. Moss looked healthy and got open often for Jason Campbell, so if he can continue that level of effort then Moss owners can feel much better about putting him in their lineups.
WR Sinorice Moss, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Plaxico Burress is at less than full strength, so someone has to step up and be a viable target for Eli Manning. Sinorice Moss auditioned for that role in Week 11 against Detroit as he caught four balls for 46 yards. If Burress degrades to the point where he can no longer start, Moss may move into that role. With Minnesota's weak pass defense next on the agenda and issues with RB health for the Giants, Moss could start to become rather valuable.
WR Terrell Owens, DAL - It isn't easy to get upgraded when you are a fantasy #1 WR, but scoring four touchdowns in one game is certainly one of those times. Owens had eight catches for 173 yards and was running free through the Redskin secondary more often than not. Tony Romo was more than happy to accommodate Owens with a few long bombs for touchdowns as TO scored four times in Week 11, the first time in Owens' NFL career that he had scored four touchdowns.
WR Antwaan Randle El, WAS -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - As Jason Campbell continues to mature at QB, the Redskins may find themselves needing to throw more often as defenses work to take away Clinton Portis and the ground game. Randle El put up good numbers in Week 11 (7-53) and is now starting opposite of Santana Moss. Add Randle El if you need WR depth or a spot starter.
WR Amani Toomer, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Toomer is currently starting opposite of Plaxico Burress, but if Burress continues to struggle with his ankle and his stats it is possible that Toomer could move up the food chain to become the #1 receiver for Eli Manning. Toomer has put up big numbers at times over the years, so despite his recent stats (such as 4-39 against the Lions in Week 11) we know Toomer is capable of elevating his game. With Minnesota's weak pass defense next on the schedule and issues with RB health for the Giants, Toomer could increase significantly in value.
WR Reggie Williams, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Williams may have only had two receptions for 62 yards on Sunday against the Chargers, but he scored a TD (36 yards) and now has five TDs this season. More importantly, for fantasy consistency, he has five TDs in five different games.
WR Roy Williams, DET - Roy Williams finally had only his third game this season with at least 100 receiving yards, compared to six such games in 2006. In week eleven, the former Longhorn caught six Jon Kitna passes for 106 yards. With the ineffectiveness of Kevin Jones, Kitna and Williams could produce for fantasy owners the last few weeks of the season.
Downgrade
WR Plaxico Burress, NYG - Plaxico Burress continues to slide, this week collecting just four balls for 47 yards. He has failed to top 50 yards receiving for four consecutive contests. Whether or not it is related to his ankle injury and inability to practice during the week, the lack of performance is apparent. Until Burress shows that extra gear that he had in the first half of the season, consider other options for your lineup.
WR Laveranues Coles, NYJ - Laveranues Coles had only one reception for 56 yards in week eleven against the Steelers. He almost scored on the play as he was pulled down inside the ten. The former Seminole was hampered by an ankle injury for most of the game. He currently looks unlikely to play in week 12.
WR Patrick Crayton, DAL - Crayton is not in danger of losing his status as a starter, but with Romo looking at Owens and Witten most of the time, there are just not enough passes coming Crayton's way. Crayton did induce a big pass interference penalty, but until he does more than he did in Week 11 (2-16), keep him on your fantasy team's bench.
WR Andre Davis, HOU - Davis is pretty much a non-factor now that Andre Johnson is healthy again.
WR Lee Evans, BUF - Lee Evans had an off game against the Patriots on Sunday night. Losman found his favorite receiver four times for forty yards. The former Badger can always throw a huge game one the board, but the Patriots held him in check. Evans only has two touchdowns this season, disappointing many fantasy owners. With Jacksonville and Washington next on the schedule, it will not get much easier for the four-year pro.
WR Marvin Harrison, IND - The growing question every week is - how's Marvin doing? He always seems to be not quite ready enough to play. There is definitely something wrong with Marvin Harrison's knee, but now the question is - can it be healed before it's too late fantasy wise? Marvin may be a nice stash away player come fantasy playoffs in week 13, but that's a big IF he's healthy enough to play effectively. Continue to monitor this situation. We've heard he could be back for week 13 against division rival Jacksonville. Next week, the Colts play at Atlanta, so it they may decide to rest him for another week, just to be sure. We'll see. Stay tuned.
WR Ike Hilliard, TB - If you were hoping for a nice 7 or 8 reception game from Ike Hilliard against the Falcons, then you were sadly disappointed on Sunday. He only managed one catch for 14 yards. The poor performance was his worst of the season. We don't think the poor game will carry over to next week, but if you have better options out of your WR3 or WR4 position, you may want to consider them until Hilliard regains his 5-7 reception per game form.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN - Houshmandzadeh scored yet another TD in Week 11 as he reeled in eight passes for 87 yards, but he gets a downgrade? Well, he had to leave late in the game when he was hit on a tackle on his hip which might cost him some time. If he turns out to be fine then forget the downgrade - but for now, be wary and check the injury report.
WR Darrell Jackson, SF - Jackson is simply not playing well this season. He has only 23 receptions on 61 targets this year, an abysmal 38% catch rate, and it was more of the same yesterday as he caught only two passes on eight targets. He had a bad drop in the end zone in the fourth quarter on what would have been a game-tying touchdown. Both Arnaz Battle and Vernon Davis have been more effective in the receiving game this season, and Jackson should not be in anyone's starting fantasy lineup.
WR Vincent Jackson, SD - While Chris Chambers, Antonio Gates, and LaDainian Tomlinson are the first three options in the passing game, wide receivers Craig Davis and Legedu Naanee also had more receptions yesterday than Jackson, and both appear to have more reliable hands than Jackson. While Jackson's value in redraft leagues had dropped several weeks ago, his value in dynasty leagues also appears to be dropping.
WR Sidney Rice, MIN - Sidney Rice has been hampered by a hamstring injury for a couple of weeks. In week eleven against the Raiders, the former Gamecock had only two receptions for 18 yards. He is only 21 yards old and will be a much better player next year after another offseason. Rice completed two passes on gadget plays for a total of 94 yards.
WR Steve Smith, CAR - Steve Smith did not play on Sunday at Green Bay due to a shin injury that kept him out of practice this week. We didn't necessarily give the green light to start him in the first place, but no stats this game hurts his final end of season numbers even more. Although we do like Smith with Testaverde at QB, he is probably not going to live up to expectations the rest of the season. Check back later in the week to see if he'll be healthy for next week's game against New Orleans, because if he is good to go, you don't want to leave him on your bench for that great match up.
WR Hines Ward, PIT - Ward reeled in just two catches for 47 yards in Week 11 against the Jets, but he continues to contribute to the Steeler passing game. Ward may no longer be the primary target in the Steeler passing game, but he is quite effective when he does get opportunities. Unless his chances increase, however, he should be regarded as the second WR in the Pittsburgh offense. Ward does have a great matchup next week against the Miami Dolphins so he should post respectable numbers in Week 12.
WR Roddy White, ATL - White had four receptions for 28 yards and was not the main receiving threat for Atlanta this week. That role belonged to fourth-year pro Michael Jenkins, who put up 9 catches for 73 yards. White on the year has caught at least three passes in every game this season and continues to be a consistent WR option for your fantasy team. He doesn't score that often (just two TDs this season), but he is a nice WR3 or WR4 for your fantasy squad.
Holding steady
WR Reggie Brown, PHI - Reggie Brown officially had just two catches for 18 yards but he lost a touchdown off of a flea-flicker in the first quarter due to a holding penalty. Brown is still not a consistent contributor, but he is working his way towards that consistency. Give Brown the benefit of the doubt as far as raw value, but consider other starters for one more week as the Eagles face the Patriots in Week 12.
WR Mark Clayton, BAL - What a difference a week makes. Last week Mark Clayton was 8-107 receiving, and now in Week 11 he had just two short catches for nine yards against the Browns. Considering that the Ravens were already short-handed at WR, this does not bode well for Clayton. We would downgrade Clayton here, but next week the Ravens face the Bengals, which are one of the worst teams against the pass. For that reason, it would be OK to roll the dice once more with Clayton, but if he fails to deliver again he should be cut in favor of a better option.
WR Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ - Jerricho Cotchery disappointed against the Steelers with one catch for five yards. This was against a top pass defense. Also, something to watch is the Coles injury. With the former Florida State receiver hampered with injury, defenses are able to concentrate solely on Cotchery.
WR Anthony Gonzalez, IND - Gonzalez was officially active in week 11, but he never saw the field as he is still recovering from his dislocated thumb. Prior to the injury, Gonzalez was the main replacement at WR for the Colts with Marvin Harrison still nursing an injured knee. We may see Gonzalez before we see Harrison, so there's some hope that he'll have a productive game, possibly next week against Atlanta.
WR Calvin Johnson, DET - Calvin Johnson is still bothered by pain in his back, and the Lions plan to limit his involvement accordingly. Johnson apparently re-aggravated his back injury early in the Week 10 matchup against Arizona. "We are going to be careful with him. He needs to rest that thing but he still needs reps so it is kind of a catch-22," said coordinator Mike Martz this past week. Johnson caught three passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. The former Georgia Tech star has not had the breakout season many expected.
WR Laurent Robinson, ATL - Robinson had only two catches for 43 yards Sunday against Tampa Bay, but he continues to impress as far as rookie receivers go. He has at least three catches in five of his ten games this season. There are several WR options on Atlanta, but Robinson is slowly climbing the ladder with his consistency.
WR Reggie Wayne, IND - Sunday, Wayne finished with just 4 receptions for 75 yards. That's two games in his last three of 75 yards or less. He is still a must start every week in all formats.
Tight End
Upgrade
TE Chris Cooley, WAS - Cooley got in on the act that Washington performed against Dallas in Week 11. Jason Campbell had a career day, and Cooley was a big part of it. Cooley had double-digit targets as he led all receivers in catches (8-89-1) and found the end zone for one of Campbell's two touchdowns. Campbell relies on Cooley to move the chains and be a safety valve in addition to his designed plays, so Cooley makes for a solid weekly fantasy TE option.
TE Vernon Davis, SF - Despite missing two games earlier this season, Davis is second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards on the year. While he has only one touchdown this season, he has had over 50 yards receiving in four out of the last six games he has played in.
TE Donald Lee, GB - Donald Lee has been a pleasant surprise this season. He will be a top ten tight end at the end of the season. And, the Packers just rewarded Lee with a contract extension. In week eleven against the Panthers, Donald Lee had five receptions for 49 yards and two touchdown receptions.
TE Alex Smith, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Smith had his best game of the season with three receptions for 51 yards and a TD this week against Atlanta. He now has four three TDs this season. Jeff Garcia does a great job of spreading the ball around, so it's hard to tell if this trend will continue. We think this may be an anomaly, but it's possible Smith could have a second half surge in him, so keep a look out, especially if you could use a better TE than what you currently have.
TE L.J. Smith, PHI - Smith continues to shine of late as he snared four catches for 44 yards, making him 8-93-1 for the past two weeks. He is running intermediate routes that move the chains for Philadelphia and McNabb is getting comfortable once again in going to him for a fresh set of downs. If Smith is still somehow available on waivers and your fantasy team is short on TE talent, add Smith to your team.
TE Quinn Sypniewski, BAL -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Baltimore needs to throw to stay competitive these days and now with both Kyle Boller under center and an ailing Todd Heap, the door is open for Sypniewski to contribute. He logged six catches for 53 yards in Week 11 against the Browns, so if Heap does not get healthy soon, consider Sypniewski if you need TE help.
TE Jason Witten, DAL - Witten very quietly had the same number of catches as Terrell Owens in Week 11, but since he didn't find the end zone (and Owens visits it four times), Witten's effort goes unnoticed. Witten is getting a lot of targets from Romo, and that is unlikely to change. Keep Witten in your lineup, or go out and get him for a playoff push.
Downgrade
TE Dallas Clark, IND - Clark returned to action after sustaining a concussion two weeks ago. His return was ho-hum, however, as he only totaled 15 yards on three receptions. The Colts offense is not firing on all cylinders and the players who have produced earlier in the season are struggling right now.
TE Alge Crumpler, ATL - Crumpler could only manage three receptions for 28 yards in the loss to Tampa Bay this week. Crumpler's ranking among the league's TEs has dropped considerably this season, thanks to injuries and a different style of offense without Michael Vick under center. We don't recommend starting him unless you have no other options.
TE Todd Heap, BAL - Heap was out in Week 11 again with an injury. Until he can put up a decent game and play into the fourth quarter, get another option on your team, even for depth.
TE Eric Johnson, NO - The inconsistency continues for Eric Johnson. This week he totaled only 17 yards on two receptions. He is not considered a good start at the TE position going forward. He has good games here and there, but the reliability factor comes into play. If you have better options, go with someone who is more consistent in his production.
TE Jeff King, CAR - King had only two catches for 13 yards. He is not considered a good option going forward.
Holding steady
TE Owen Daniels, HOU - Daniels had five catches for 74 yards and now has seven games of five receptions or more and nine games of four receptions or more this season. While Daniels has not found the end zone yet this year, he remains a strong fantasy TE start every week.
Kicker
Upgrade
PK Phil Dawson, CLE -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Dawson had four field goals against the Ravens in Week 11, including a dramatic game-tying 51-yard kick at the end of regulation. He then added the game winner in overtime from 33 yards. Dawson is kicking for a team that is putting up a lot of offense this season, so if he is available in your league, consider him for your squad.
PK Robbie Gould, CHI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Robbie Gould enjoyed a good fantasy game with Rex Grossman under center, just like in 2006. Against Seattle in week eleven, Gould converted all three field goal chances and a pair of extra points. The field goals were from 31, 47, and 48 yards. With Grossman back, Gould could be a sleeper fantasy kicker down the stretch.
PK Sebastian Janikowski, OAK -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Raiders were able to move the ball yesterday, but struggled to get into the end zone. Their red zone struggles are Janikowski's gain, however, as he went five for five on his field goal attempts against the Vikings. He has now made a 50+ yard field goal in three out of the last four games.
PK Jeff Reed, PIT - Reed made all of his kicks in Week 11, scoring 10 points on three field goals and an extra point. Reed hit all three of his field goals (37, 33, and 48 yards) including a game tying kick that sent the game into overtime. With the Steelers continuing to click on offense Reed should be putting up multiple scores week after week.
PK Josh Scobee, JAX -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Josh Scobee is healthy again and actually kicked for the team in week 11.
PK Matt Stover, BAL - Stover is widely regarded as a top veteran kicker, but he has had some scoring issues the past few weeks. Now that the Ravens have Kyle Boller and are starting to move the ball again, Stover's value goes back up. In Week 11 Stover was a perfect three of three on FGs from 34, 41 and 47 yards.
PK Lawrence Tynes, NYG -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Tynes converted all of his kicks in Week 11, putting up 10 points against Detroit in Week 11. Tynes was perfect on his field goals, going 3-for-3 including a long of 46. If the Giants start to struggle in the Red Zone without a healthy Brandon Jacobs, Tynes could be up for multiple multi-FG efforts in November and December.
Downgrade
PK John Carney, JAX - John Carney will be out of a job this week as Josh Scobee has returned to kick for the Jaguars.
PK Jay Feely, MIA - Jay Feely is not getting any more opportunities to score with Jon Beck under center. He finished with one extra point and one missed field goal. The former Giant kicker should not be in fantasy starting lineups unless there is much desperation.
PK Nate Kaeding, SD - Nate Kaeding has been very consistent over the last four weeks as he has turned in five points in each game. However, five points is pretty lame. Until Philip Rivers can play consistently well, Rivers simply won't get enough opportunities to be a viable fantasy option.
PK Adam Vinatieri, IND - Vinatieri missed two FGs under 40 yards on Sunday at home in the dome against the Chiefs. He has been inconsistent since that game-losing shank against San Diego last week. Vinatieri has missed five of his last ten FG attempts.
Holding steady
PK Mason Crosby, GB - Mason Crosby is getting scoring opportunities but failing to produce. In week eleven, Crosby was one of three for field goals, making a 47-yard kick, and was four for four on extra points. If he can start connecting, Crosby will be a nice fantasy option.
Team Defense
Upgrade
TD Tampa Bay Buccaneers, TB -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Buccaneers had four sacks and four turnovers in a lopsided victory against Atlanta on Sunday. The Bucs defense is quietly producing quality numbers this season. They have held their opponent to 10 points or less in five games this season.
TD Arizona Cardinals, ARI -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - Don't look now, but the Cardinals defense is excelling. Over their last three games, they have accumulated eight sacks and forced 10 turnovers. They are a nice option if you are in need of an upgrade.
TD Kansas City Chiefs, KC -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Chiefs played well in defending both the run and the pass against the explosive (albeit wounded) Indianapolis offense yesterday. They showed penetration against the run, making many tackles in the Colts' backfield, and also generated consistent pressure on QB Peyton Manning.
TD Miami Dolphins, MIA -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Miami Dolphin defense is playing better each week. Even without veteran Zach Thomas in week eleven against the Eagles, the Miami defense looked good, holding Philadelphia to 17 points. The Dolphin defense had three interceptions on the day.
TD Green Bay Packers, GB - The Green Bay Packers are playing great defense. Not only are the stats good for NFL purposes, but the Packers are a very good fantasy defense, also. In week eleven, the Packer defense had two sacks, two picks, and one fumble recovery to go with a 94 yard punt return for a score. They are scoring well for fantasy owners.
TD New England Patriots, NE - The Patriots defense is scoring very well lately thanks in large part to their incredible offense. With New England scoring so many points, the opposing offense is under intense pressure to perform as well. This gives New England's defenese more chances at big plays.
TD Houston Texans, HOU -
*** POTENTIAL WAIVER WIRE GEM *** - The Texans forced three turnovers against New Orleans on Sunday and now have 19 takeaways this year. The Texans also have four defensive TDs. That is fantastic big-play scoring for any fantasy squad.
Downgrade
TD Philadelphia Eagles, PHI - The Eagles defense is not a great unit right now. Over their last four games, they have only sacked the quarterback five times and forced only three turnovers. Those paltry numbers will not help a fantasy squad.
TD Washington Redskins, WAS - Washington's offense has turned in a couple of nice games lately, but their defense is getting gashed. Over the last four games, they have allowed 1562 yards and 133 points. In some scoring systems, those numbers will severely hurt a fantasy team. This defense isn't creating many big plays either as they have only seven sacks and five turnovers in the last four weeks.
TD Minnesota Vikings, MIN - The Vikings defense had a difficult time keeping the Oakland Raiders, led by Daunte Culpepper, in check. Culpepper had been struggling, but the Vikings allowed him to throw for 344 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings only created one interception, one fumble and four sacks. This is not the great fantasy defense it was earlier in the season and doesn't have much consistency.
