Week 9 Game Recap: Seattle Seahawks 30, Cleveland Browns 33

What you need to know

Seattle Seahawks

On a day which both quarterbacks threw the ball up nearly 50 times, Matt Hasselbeck couldn't generate quite enough offense to guide the Seahawks to victory. Hasselbeck finished the game completing 30 of 47 passes for 318 yards, with two touchdowns to one interception. Even with the return of D.J. Hackett, Hasselbeck's favorite receiver was clearly Bobby Engram, who was targeted 21 times, catching 14 for 139 yards and a touchdown. Hackett's return was favorable, as he pulled in six balls for 58 yards and a touchdown. Nate Burleson got into the action both in the receiving game, where he caught four passes for 59 yards, as well as in the return game, where he finished with 170 return yards and a punt return touchdown. Ben Obomanu caught one pass for seven yards as he saw playing time with Deion Branch still inactive. Out of the backfield, Maurice Morris added 43 yards on two catches, while Shaun Alexander had a one yard grab.

Shaun Alexander left the game in the first quarter, though returned a few series later. Overall, his day was unproductive, as he finished with only 32 yards on fourteen carries. Maurice Morris substituted in and was also used on the final series of regulation to help tie up the game, totaling 55 yards on nine carries. Matt Hasselbeck added seventeen yards on four carries, but was credited with a fumble on a poor exchange to Morris. Fullback Leonard Weaver gained one yard on his only carry while Alexander was out of the game.

Cleveland Browns

Despite seeing his single game rushing record broken earlier in the day and gaining only 37 yards on the ground on twenty carries, Jamal Lewis had a day he won't soon forget, crossing the goal line four times. Lewis scored twice from one yard out, and twice from two yards out. Jason Wright played only a small role in this game, gaining six yards on three carries, with Jerome Harrison not receiving a touch all afternoon. Derek Anderson was credited with 21 yards on two official attempts.

Through the air, Derek Anderson engineered a comeback to set up each of the Lewis touchdowns, looking to his favorite receivers over and over again. In doing so, Anderson completed 29 of 48 passes for 364 yards, though no touchdowns and one interception. Kellen Winslow was the primary beneficiary, with eleven catches for 125 yards. Braylon Edwards hauled in five catches for 67 yards, while Joe Jurevicius caught four balls for 69 yards, plus added a key two point conversion. The running backs were active out of the backfield with Jamal Lewis gaining 67 yards through the air on four receptions, while Jason Wright added thirteen yards on one reception and fullback Lawrence Vickers pulled in three balls for seventeen yards. Backup tight end Steve Heiden also caught a six yard pass.

What you ought to know

QB Matt Hasselbeck, Pass: 30 - 47 - 318 - 2 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 4 - 17 - 0

Hasselbeck completed 64% of his passes for an average gain of 6.8 yards per attempt on the afternoon, however the play which will likely stick most in his mind is an overtime scramble in which he was initially rewarded with the first down only to be overturned. The Seahawks were stopped on fourth down on the next play, setting up optimum field position for the Browns to claim the overtime victory. Hasselbeck consistently looked to Bobby Engram in this game, but also showed confidence in D.J. Hackett in his return. Without the aid of a strong running game against the Browns, Hasselbeck was unable to hang onto the early lead which the Seahawks had built.

RB Shaun Alexander, Rush: 14 - 32 - 0, Rec: 1 - 1 - 0 (3 targets)

Alexander departed with an undisclosed injury in the first half, but returned, though averaged only 2.3 yards per carry and was not on the field in key situations late in the game.

RB Maurice Morris, Rush: 9 - 55 - 0, Rec: 2 - 43 - 0 (2 targets)

Morris entered the game in the first quarter when Shaun Alexander exited, and had a couple of nice runs, though ultimately was stopped in overtime on a fourth and one play to somewhat erase his positive play earlier in the game.

WR Bobby Engram, Rec: 14 - 139 - 1 (21 targets)

Engram was all over the field throughout this entire game. After an effective first half where he was targeted nine times and caught a touchdown pass, the Seahawks went back to him twelve more times in the second half of the game. Engram's stats were not affected by the return of D.J. Hackett to the lineup, as this allowed him to play in his natural slot position and find the open space in the secondary.

WR D.J. Hackett, Rec: 6 - 58 - 1 (9 targets)

Hackett's return was a positive one, though he didn't receive a target until midway through the second quarter. Once Matt Hasselbeck began to look his way, Hackett performed well, and was targeted three times on the drive in which he caught a touchdown.

WR Nate Burleson, Rec: 4 - 59 - 0 (6 targets)

Burleson was able to continue to perform in the receiving game as only D.J. Hackett returned, while Deion Branch remained sidelined. Burleson's biggest contribution however came in the return game, where he returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown.

TE Will Heller (1 targets)

With the absence of Marcus Pollard from the active roster, Heller was the starting tight end, though did not catch a pass.

PK Josh Brown 3 - 3 FG, 3 - 3 XP, 12 points

Brown connected on field goals of 22, 26 and 39 yards in length in addition to making three extra points.

SEA Rush Defense

The Seahawks shut down the Browns rushing attack for most of the afternoon, but couldn't stand up Jamal Lewis at the goal line, allowing him to cross four times from one to two yards out each time. The rush unit limited the Browns running backs to less than two yards per carry.

SEA Pass Defense

The pass defense struggled to shut down Kellen Winslow and the rest of the Browns offense, giving up 364 yards through the air, with just one interception and no sacks.

QB Derek Anderson, Pass: 29 - 48 - 364 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - 21 - 0

Anderson completed 60% of his passes for an average gain of 7.6 yards per attempt. Anderson's interception came early in the game, though he definitely turned things around in the second half to guide the Browns to victory. Anderson came very close to multiple touchdowns, including a pass to Kellen Winslow where he was forced out at the one yard line, and earlier in the game, missing on three straight attempts at the end of the first half from two yards out before having to settle for a field goal.

RB Jamal Lewis, Rush: 20 - 37 - 4, Rec: 4 - 67 - 0 (6 targets)

Though he averaged just 1.9 yards per carry, Lewis found paydirt four times in this game and showed he was healthy, carrying the ball twenty times and receiving over 85% of the Browns carries. Lewis was more involved in the passing game then most weeks, with his 34 yard reception in overtime taking the ball into field goal territory and sealing the victory.

WR Braylon Edwards, Rec: 5 - 67 - 0 (13 targets)

Edwards was double covered for most of the afternoon, though Derek Anderson still found a way to try to get him the ball. Edwards' presence likewise helped open up the middle of the field for Kellen Winslow, and allowed the Browns to generate a ground game near the goalline.

WR Joe Jurevicius, Rec: 4 - 69 - 0 (7 targets)

Jurevicius' biggest play of the game was his two point reception to help put the Browns ahead 30-27 and ensure that a field goal would only force an overtime. Jurevicius likewise benefited from the extra attention paid to Braylon Edwards.

TE Kellen Winslow Jr, Rec: 11 - 125 - 0 (21 targets)

Winslow saw as many targets for the Browns as opponent Bobby Engram saw for the Seahawks, with both receivers catching double digit passes and gaining over 100 yards. Winslow just missed a touchdown late in the game, but averaged 11.4 yards per catch on the productive afternoon.

PK Phil Dawson 2 - 2 FG, 1 - 2 XP, 7 points

Dawson hooked an extra point attempt early in the game which forced the Browns into multiple two point conversions later in the game, however Dawson was able to atone for his earlier mistake with a game winning field goal in overtime. Dawson connected from 19 and 24 yards out, but finished just one of two on extra point attempts.

CLE Rush Defense

The Browns shut down Shaun Alexander, though had difficulty shutting down Maurice Morris most of the afternoon. The unit did come up big in overtime, and stuffed Morris when it mattered most to force a turnover on downs. The rush defense also came up with a fumble recovery on a failed exchange between Matt Hasselbeck and Maurice Morris.

CLE Pass Defense

Much like their counteparts, the secondary was beat for over 300 yards, and failed to come up with any sacks. The Browns had just one interception, though gave up two early passing touchdowns before buckling down to help allow the Browns to come back.
