Week 15 Game Recap: Seattle Seahawks 10, Carolina Panthers 13

What you need to know

Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck had decent stats but it was ultimately his turnover that cost Seattle the game. Right after his late fourth quarter fumble Carolina scored a touchdown to go up by ten points. He was able to come back and drive the field to get a touchdown but it was just about as time ran out.

The Seattle running game was terrible. They just could not get anything going. Shaun Alexander led the team in rushing yards with a total of 17. He had a 20 yard run but it ended in a fumble that Seattle was able to recover. Maurice Morris was only able to add 15 yards on four carries.

Bobby Engram led the Seahawks in catches and yards. He caught nine passes for 84 yards but it was Deion Branch who scored the only Seattle touchdown. Branch caught a deflected pass right at the end of the game to pull Seattle within three points. There were only a few seconds left on the clock when he caught the touchdown.

The Seattle defense only allowed 13 points but unfortunately it wasn't enough to win the game. They were on the field for 11 minutes more than the Carolina defense. They were not able to collect any sacks nor did they create any turnovers.

Carolina Panthers

DeAngelo Williams had a huge run at the end of the game when he broke through the line and went 35 yards for a touchdown. Prior to that run, the Carolina running game hadn't done much at all having carried the ball 37 times for just 79 yards. DeShaun Foster carried the ball 18 times for 47 yards.

Steve Smith led the Carolina receivers with eight catches for 72 yards. Carolina really only got into the Seattle red zone once. Moore tried to hit Drew Carter in the end zone but the pass was broken up. The drive ended when a 37 yard field goal went wide left due to the strong winds.

The Carolina defense played great. They completely shut down the Seattle running game. Hasselbeck was able to throw for 274 yards but the Carolina defense did not allow a touchdown until just seconds were left in the game. They sacked Hasselbeck three times and forced two fumbles. The second fumble led to the game winning run by DeAngelo Williams.

What you ought to know

QB Matt Hasselbeck, Pass: 27 - 41 - 274 - 1 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 2 - 11 - 0

Statistically, Hasselbeck had an ok game completing 27 of 41 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately for Seattle, the play of the game was when Hasselbeck was sacked and fumbled in the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Carolina scored on a 35 yard run to put the game out of reach. It took until the fourth quarter before he was able to drive Seattle for a score. His touchdown to Deion Branch came at the end of the game with just a few seconds left on the clock and Seattle down by ten points. The pass should have at least been knocked down and probably intercepted. It bounced off the defender's hands and Branch was able to come down with the touchdown.

RB Maurice Morris, Rush: 4 - 15 - 0, Rec: 4 - 31 - 0 (7 targets)

Morris ran the ball four times for a total of 15 yards. He also caught four passes for 31 yards. He caught a pass inside the Carolina ten yard line but was only able to get it down to the eight. On the next play he ran for four yards but it left Seattle in a fourth and one situation. They kicked a field goal to end the drive.

RB Shaun Alexander, Rush: 7 - 17 - 0, Rec: 1 - 6 - 0 (2 targets)

Alexander was completely taken out of this game by the Carolina defense. He carried the ball seven times for 17 yards. He had a run of 20 yards and fumbled at the end of it but the ball was recovered by Seattle. His other six runs totaled minus three yards. He caught one pass for six yards.

RB Leonard Weaver, Rec: 2 - 11 - 0 (4 targets)

Weaver caught two passes for 11 yards but neither one resulted in a first down. His last target was right at the start of the third quarter.

WR Bobby Engram, Rec: 9 - 84 - 0 (10 targets)

Engram was targeted ten times and caught all but one of those passes. He ended up with nine catches for 84 yards. Five of those catches went for first downs. Engram did not have any red zone chances in this game. His longest catch went for 19 yards and it got the ball into Carolina territory. The drive ended with Seattle's first points of the game on a field goal.

WR Deion Branch, Rec: 8 - 79 - 1 (13 targets)

Branch was targeted 13 times in the game. He caught eight passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. The pass was right at the end of the game with just a few seconds left on the clock. The Carolina defender had position on Branch but the ball went right through his hands. Branch was able to come down with the deflection. Branch picked up five first downs in the game. He had two red zone opportunities and scored the touchdown on one of them. The other pass was incomplete.

WR Nate Burleson, Rush: 1 - 1 - 0, Rec: 1 - 20 - 0 (4 targets)

Burleson caught just one pass for 20 yards. His only catch of the game came with under a minute left in the fourth quarter. Seattle tried to run him on a third and three but he was only able to get one yard. On Seattle's field goal drive, he managed to draw a pass interference call that added 24 yards to the drive.

WR Ben Obomanu, Rec: 1 - 18 - 0 (1 targets)

Obomanu was thrown to once and caught the pass for a gain of 18 yards. The completion came late in the fourth quarter.

TE Will Heller, Rec: 1 - 25 - 0 (2 targets)

Heller caught one pass for 25 yards. Heller's looks were right at the end of the game. His first chance was a deep pass that was incomplete. Hasselbeck went right back to him with a short pass and Heller was able to gain 25 yards down to the Carolina 15 yard line.

TE Marcus Pollard

Pollard wasn't thrown to in the game. He did get into the scorebook with a false start penalty.

PK Josh Brown 1 - 1 FG, 1 - 1 XP, 4 points

Josh Brown made his only field goal attempt, a 23 yarder. He also made his only extra point attempt.

SEA Rush Defense

The Seattle rush defense played well for most of the game but with Seattle down by only three points, the defense allowed a back breaking 35 yard touchdown run by DeAngelo Williams. That run put Carolina over 100 yards rushing for the game. Carolina only gained two first downs on the ground. Even with the 35 yard run, Carolina only averaged 3.0 yards per rush.

SEA Pass Defense

The Seattle pass defense kept Carolina out of the end zone. While they only allowed 208 passing yards and no touchdowns it turned out not to be good enough against a quarterback who was starting for the first time. They did not sack Matt Moore nor did they intercept him. On the plus side, the pass defense did not allow any touchdowns and they kept the offense in the game.

QB Matt Moore, Pass: 19 - 27 - 208 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 2 - 5 - 0

Matt Moore got the start. For his first NFL start he played well and did a good job of managing the game. Moore completed 19 of 27 passes for 208 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass but he also did not turn the ball over. Moore had a problem holding on to the ball on a drive in the second quarter. He fumbled the ball twice but recovered it both times. In the second half, Moore led Carolina on two field goal drives that lasted ten plays each.

RB DeShaun Foster, Rush: 18 - 47 - 0

DeShaun Foster carried the ball 18 times for 47 yards. He was unable to pick up a yard on a fourth and one try in the third quarter. Over the course of the game, Foster had three chances to pick up a first down with just a one yard gain but he was unable to get it all three times. Foster did not have any carries inside the red zone.

RB DeAngelo Williams, Rush: 15 - 61 - 1, Rec: 2 - 11 - 0 (2 targets)

Williams ran the ball 15 times for 61 yards and a touchdown. Prior to his touchdown he had only gained 26 yards on 14 carries. After Carolina recovered a Hasselbeck fumble, Williams carried the ball three straight times including the long run for the touchdown. His score sealed the victory for Carolina. He also caught two passes for 11 yards.

RB Brad Hoover, Rush: 1 - 1 - 0 (1 targets)

Brad Hoover had one carry for one yard. Hoover caught a pass for one yard but there was a penalty on Seattle that was accepted, negating his catch.

WR Steve Smith, Rush: 2 - 0 - 0, Rec: 8 - 72 - 0 (11 targets)

Smith caught eight passes for 72 yards on a total of 11 targets. He picked up four first downs in the game including two of them on third down plays during one of Carolina's field goal drives.

WR Drew Carter, Rec: 3 - 22 - 0 (8 targets)

Carter caught three passes for 22 yards. All three of his catches went for first downs. Carter was targeted in the end zone early in the game but the pass was incomplete. That pass was his only red zone chance.

WR Ryne Robinson, Rec: 2 - 20 - 0 (2 targets)

Ryne Robinson was targeted twice in the game and he caught both passes for a total of 20 yards. Both of his targets were on third down and he picked up first downs on each.

WR Keary Colbert

Colbert was inactive for this game.

TE Jeff King, Rec: 2 - 13 - 0 (2 targets)

Jeff King caught two passes for 13 yards. His first catch was for 13 yards and a first down. His second catch was after Matt Moore fumbled the snap, recovered it and then dumped the pass off to King. The play went for no gain.

TE Christian Fauria, Rec: 1 - 16 - 0 (1 targets)

Fauria caught the only pass thrown his way. It was good for 16 yards and a first down.

TE Dante Rosario, Rec: 1 - 54 - 0 (1 targets)

Rosario was targeted once in the game. In the first quarter, Moore threw down the middle and hit Rosario who then took it for 54 yards. He got the ball down to the Seattle 21 yard line. The drive ended in a missed field goal.

PK John Kasay 2 - 3 FG, 1 - 1 XP, 7 points

Kasay made two of his three field goals. He missed his first attempt when the wind got hold of what looked like a good kick. The ball seemed to be straight down the middle when the wind made the ball take a hard left hand turn. With the wind at his back, Kasay made the next two field goals including one from 53 yards.

CAR Rush Defense

Carolina's defense probably played their best game of the year. The rush defense dominated the Seattle running game. They only allowed 44 rushing yards on 14 attempts. Seattle was only able to gain two first downs on the ground. Even when Seattle had a big run, the defense forced Alexander to fumble and almost turned it into a positive play for Carolina.

CAR Pass Defense

The Carolina pass defense gave up 274 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was right at the very end of the game. It should have been knocked down but Patrick Dendy allowed the ball to go right through his hands and Deion Branch ended up catching it. The defense came up with three sacks and forced two fumbles. The last sack on Hasselbeck caused him to lose the ball and set up Carolina for the game winning score.
