Week 6 Game Recap: Philadelphia Eagles 16, New York Jets 9

What you need to know

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles took their 1-3 record into The Meadowlands desperate for a win and came out of the contest with just that. Improving their record to 2-3, the Eagles clawed and scratched their way to a victory, ultimately hanging on in the end, in a game that was not as close as the scoreboard would indicate.

The Eagles dominated the offensive line of scrimmage en route to 151 total yards on the ground and 278 through the air. They were consistently on the right side of the fifty, however could not make their drives last, settling for field goal attempts on five trips, and converting on three of them. Their lone touchdown came on their first offensive possession of the game, when Donovan McNabb hit Kevin Curtis on a short route, which he then turned into an impressive 75 yard score.

The Eagles defense came to play, not allowing a touchdown and holding the Jets to nine total points. They put pressure on Chad Pennington and the Jets' offense for all four quarters and provided the game winning stop inside the red zone with under four minutes to play.

New York Jets

The New York Jets came into their match up with The Philadelphia Eagles needing a win and looking to turn around their season. After having every chance to do so, the Jets ultimately came up short, losing 16-9 in a heartbreaker, and falling to 1-5.

New York's defense was the ultimate key to the game, keeping them close for four quarters of football and putting the game in the hands of Chad Pennington and the Jets offense, which failed to score a single touchdown. Pennington ended up 11 for 21 for 128 yards and threw a crucial interception on a ball that was badly under thrown.

Thomas Jones had a very big day, showing off the reason the Jets brought him to New York, and rushing for 130 yards while adding a reception for 11 yards. He had room to run all day and broke off big runs, with a 36 yard dash being his longest of the day. In the fourth quarter however, the Jets decided against calling Jones' number on third and fourth down, and instead opted for an unsuccessful sneak and fade route, which resulted in a turnover on downs and sent the Jets spiraling to their third straight loss.

What you ought to know

QB Donovan McNabb, Pass: 22 - 35 - 278 - 1 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - 3 - 0

Donovan McNabb looked to regain his old form as he completed 22 of 35 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown. He had time in the pocket and moved around well to evade the rush. His lone touchdown pass was on a short route to Kevin Curtis, which turned into a 75 yard score. McNabb looked very comfortable under center and was very happy to see the return of Brian Westbrook as a receiving option, targeting a team high eight times.

RB Brian Westbrook, Rush: 20 - 120 - 0, Rec: 6 - 36 - 0 (8 targets)

Brian Westbrook returned to the lineup and went over the century mark on the ground. Rushing 20 times for 120 yards, Westbrook saw eight targets go his way, catching five of them for 36 total yards. He was again the focal point of the offense getting 25 touches and piling up the yards. He seemed to run with determination and was willing to give a hit to oncoming defenders. Had it not been for a holding penalty late in the second quarter, Westbrook would have had added a touchdown and had an even better game.

RB Correll Buckhalter, Rush: 4 - 23 - 0

Buckhalter rushed four times for 23 yards in relief of Brian Westbrook

WR Reggie Brown, Rec: 6 - 89 - 0 (7 targets)

Brown had a nice game, catching six of his seven targets for 89 yards. He made some nice moves in the open field and moved the chains for the Eagles.

WR Kevin Curtis, Rec: 5 - 121 - 1 (8 targets)

Curtis shared a team high in targets, seeing eight balls go his way and catching five of them for 121 total yards and a touchdown. His only touchdown, which proved to be the only offensive score of the game, was a pretty catch and run in which he broke a tackle and flat outran the Jets secondary.

WR Hank Baskett, Rec: 1 - 6 - 0 (1 targets)

Baskett was targeted only once, catching his lone target for six yards.

TE Brent Celek, Rec: 2 - 14 - 0 (3 targets)

Celek was targeted three times in the game, catching two of them for a total of 14 yards.

TE Matt Schobel, Rec: 1 - 4 - 0 (4 targets)

Schobel was the most targeted of the Philadelphia tight end trio, hauling in one of his four targets for four total yards.

TE L.J. Smith, Rec: 1 - 8 - 0 (2 targets)

Smith returned to the lineup and saw two targets from quarterback Donovan McNabb. He turned his two targets into one reception for a total of eight yards.

PK David Akers 3 - 5 FG, 1 - 1 XP, 10 points

Akers continued his kicking woes in The Meadowlands, hitting only three of his five field goal attempts. He missed two attempts badly early on in the game, however they were not costly in the end.

PHI Rush Defense

The Philadelphia rush defense had no answer for Thomas Jones and the Jets rushing attack, as they allowed a total of 158 yards. Jones found huge holes, as his offensive line seemed to get a good push while Jones ripped off long runs, with a 36 yard scamper being his longest. The positive thing about the Eagles pass rush is the fact that they did not allow a rushing touchdown through the whole game.

PHI Pass Defense

The Philadelphia pass defense was stout against the Jets aerial attack as they allowed a mere 128 yards and came away with one interception. Chad Pennington was clearly confused and the schemes that they threw against the Jets yielded three sacks. It was on a fourth and one from inside the 20 yard line, that the Eagles defense made its final stand, batting a ball away from Laveranues Coles, on a fade attempt late in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game.

QB Chad Pennington, Pass: 11 - 21 - 128 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 4 - 2 - 0

Pennington had poor performance under center and did not seem comfortable. He was under throwing receivers terribly and was proven time and time again that he was unable to go deep with any effectiveness. He completed 11 of his 21 passes for 128 yards and threw an interception on a deep route intended for Brad Smith. Pennington's arm strength is continuously being challenged by opposing defenses, and at the current moment, he has not been able to be successful throwing down field.

RB Thomas Jones, Rush: 24 - 130 - 0, Rec: 1 - 11 - 0 (1 targets)

Thomas Jones ran well and was given a healthy dose of carries. Carrying 24 times for 130 yards, Jones reached a season high in rushing yards in a loosing effort. He had room all day behind an offensive line that has been less than stellar. He saw one target, in which he converted to an 11 yard gain and was not much of a factor in the passing game.

RB Leon Washington, Rush: 2 - 8 - 0, Rec: 1 - 5 - 0 (1 targets)

Washington caught his only target for a five yard gain. He added two rushes for eight yards.

WR Jerricho Cotchery, Rush: 1 - 14 - 0, Rec: 5 - 71 - 0 (6 targets)

Cotchery saw six total targets, which he made the most of by grabbing five of them for 75 yards. He was open most of the day in open space and provided some great yardage after the catch. Cotchery also added 14 yards on an end around in which he made some very nice moves.

WR Brad Smith, Rush: 1 - 4 - 0, Rec: 1 - 2 - 0 (3 targets)

Smith was used in a change up role, catching one of his three targets for a total of two yards. He also added one rush for a four yard gain.

WR Laveranues Coles, Rec: 1 - 27 - 0 (7 targets)

Coles saw a team high seven total targets come his way, as he hauled in only one of them for a 27 yard gain. He dropped a pass wide open early in the game as the Jets were driving down field.

TE Chris Baker, Rec: 2 - 12 - 0 (2 targets)

Baker caught both of his targets for 12 yards.

PK Mike Nugent 3 - 4 FG, 0 - 0 XP, 9 points

Mike Nugent connected on three of four attempts for the Jets' only points of the game. On the Jets first scoring chance, Nugent missed a 44 yard try.

NYJ Rush Defense

The Jets rush defense was just as poor, allowing 151 total yards on the ground, 120 of them coming by way of Brian Westbrook, who was making his return from an injured abdomen. The bend but don't break style that the Jets employed was rather effective as they gave up 413 yards of offense but only surrendered a single touchdown.

NYJ Pass Defense

The New York pass defense was porous yet again and proved to be a focal point of attack for the Philadelphia Eagles. Kevin Curtis took his first catch of the game 75 yards for the only touchdown in this contest and victimized the Jets as they missed several tackles en route. Donovan McNabb had plenty of time, completing over 60 percent of his passes for 278 yards.
