Week 17 Game Recap: Kansas City Chiefs 10, New York Jets 13

The Kansas City Chiefs came into their week 17 match up with the New York Jets looking to evaluate some young talent while trying to come out with one more victory in 2007. In a hard fought defensive battle, the Chiefs were unable to mount much offense, falling in overtime, 13-10. Starting quarterback Brodie Croyle had an efficient game, passing for 195 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Rookie running back Jackie Battle got the start and performed well carrying 13 times for 44 yards. Through the air, however, the day belonged to Tony Gonzalez, as he saw a massive amount of targets and was able to post seven catches for 64 yards. Jeff Webb also contributed though the air as he caught four balls for 49 yards and his first career touchdown.
The Kansas City defense did all they could in keeping the Chiefs in the ball game, allowing over 300 yards while recording three sacks and only letting up 13 points. It was a day where the Chiefs offense could not get the ball rolling and the Jets looked to be the tougher more physical team, on both sides of the ball.

The New York Jets took to their home field in their final game of the 2007 season, and after a disappointing season, The Jets looked to end their year with a victory. It took over 60 minutes to accomplish, but behind the running game of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, the Jets notched their fourth victory of the season.
Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens returned to action after missing the last two games with an injury and played solid football. Managing the game well, Clemens was 13 of 25 for 115 yards and a touchdown. The legs of the Jets dynamic rushing threat carried them in this game, rushing for a total 165 yards on 36 total carries. Again, Thomas Jones got the majority of the work, while backup running back Leon Washington spelled him on multiple occasions.
The Jets defense came to play in this game, and play they did, with a physical attack that allowed only 219 total yards of offense while recording three sacks of their own. They shut down the rushing attack, making the Chiefs one-dimensional a thus securing the victory against the former coach, Herm Edwards.

Croyle was given the reigns to be the main offensive leader as he threw 43 times, completing less than half of his attempts for 195 yards and a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, trailing by a touchdown, Croyle was able to hit wide out Jeff Webb for the first Chiefs touchdown of the game, tying the score at ten a piece, and forcing overtime. Croyle played well against the Jets however he was clearly affected by the absence of their rushing attack.

Jackie Battle got the nod after Kolby Smith left the game with an injury in the first quarter. He performed well, rushing 13 times for 44 yards and catching one pass out of the backfield. He looked quick, however showed a lack of experience on some plays where he missed an assignment or was not on the same page as Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle.

Smith carried twice for one yard before leaving the game with an injury. Fellow rookie, Jackie Battle, came in to handle the rushing duties for the remained of the contest.

Jeff Webb had a game he will remember for his whole life, as he saw ten targets and was able to bring in four of them for 49 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown, which tied the game in the fourth quarter, was on a perfectly thrown deep ball as he and Croyle hooked up for the 26 yard score. It was Webb's first career touchdown and forced the extra quarter of overtime for the Chiefs.

Parker saw only three balls come his way, bringing in two of them for 23 yards.

Dwayne Bowe was limited in a big way today as he only saw three targets, bringing in one of them for 13 yards. The Jets secondary did an excellent job blanketing him and preventing him from making any big plays

Tony Gonzalez was again the primary target of Brodie Croyle, as he saw 15 total targets in the game. Gonzalez was able to bring in seven of his 15 targets for 64 total yards. He was open on all kinds of routes however Croyle was unable to hit him on a few occasions, as his passes sailed of fell short.

Wilson had a productive day catching three of his four targets for 30 yards.

Carney connected on his only field goal attempt, a 40 yard strike, while also converting his lone PAT try.
| KC Rush Defense |
The Chiefs rush defense was gashed today for a total of 199 yards on 45 carries. It was their inability to stop the run, which allowed the Jets to take control of the game, and the time of possession battle, en route to their fourth victory of the season.
| KC Pass Defense |
The Chiefs pass defense was much more solid than its rush defense, as it allowed only 115 yards through the air on 25 attempts. They were able to pressure Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens enough to record three sacks on the day in the losing effort, however were unable to stop them when it counted, as the Jets drove down the field in overtime to kick a game winning field goal.

Clemens had a mediocre day in his return, completing 13 of 25 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. In the first half, Clemens found Thomas Jones on an inside screen, allowing him to do the rest, scampering 15 yards for the games first touchdown.

Jones had a solid day against the Chiefs as he gained 98 yards on 25 attempts and added a fifteen yard touchdown reception. He had room to run for most of the day and was their workhorse as he received more than half of their 40 rushing attempts. In the first quarter, Jones took an inside screen pass from 15 yards to pay dirt as he notched his first receiving, and second total touchdown of the year.

Washington had another solid relief effort and showed his versatility as he recorded 116 total yards of offense rushing, receiving, and passing. In his relief of Thomas Jones, Washington carried the ball 11 times for 67 yards and caught three of his five targets for 13 total yards. It was on a third down play to start the second quarter, where Washington lined up as the quarterback and was able to hit rookie wide out Wallace Wright for a 36 yard pass play.

Cotchery had another solid game, seeing a team high, 10 targets, and bringing in eight of them for 76 yards. He was effective on all of his routes and again was a key component in moving the chains and winning the time of possession battle.

Wallace Wright, a second year wide receiver, got the nod today and saw three targets, bringing in two of them for 47 yards. His big gain was on a deep 36 yard strike from running back Leon Washington

Nugent made both of his field goal attempts, while also connecting on his only PAT attempt.
| NYJ Rush Defense |
The Jets rushing defense was stout today as it allowed only 53 yards on 19 carries. Rookie running back Kolby Smith left the game after only two carries and gave way to Jackie Battle, another rookie, who could not find any room to run against this hard nosed Jets front.

The Jets pass defense was solid and did enough to pull out the victory. They recorded three sacks, however allowed the Chiefs to tie the game late as they gave up a big pass play down field to Chiefs receiver Jeff Webb, which forced overtime.
