Week 6 Game Recap: Houston Texans 17, Jacksonville Jaguars 37
What you need to know
Houston Texans
The Texans squandered early opportunities that could have given them a 17--0 lead, but instead either turned the ball over or settled for field goals. The defense played well enough early on and forced three turnovers, but eventually wore down against the punishing Jaguars ground assault.
Ahman Green's return to the lineup did little to improve the Houston rushing attack. Andre Johnson missed another game with his knee injury, but Kevin Walter caught 12 passes for 160 yards. TE Owen Daniels continues to be a key part of the passing attack, catching five passes for 79 yards.
Matt Schaub failed to throw a touchdown pass as he completed 19 of 31 for 259 yards with one interception. He also fumbled which was returned for a Jaguars touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Houston simply did not have the offensive firepower to keep up with Jacksonville. Trailing 37--9, their back up players came in with 5:41 left and scored their only touchdown with just 29 seconds left in the game.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars were able to wear down Houston with a balanced offense and an opportunistic defense. Jacksonville rushed for 244 yards and two touchdowns, passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns, and the defense forced a Matt Schaub fumble which was returned for another touchdown.
Fred Taylor had a run of 76 yards, the second longest of his career, on the second offensive play of the game. Maurice Jones-Drew scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs of seven and 57 yards, and added another 59 yards on four pass receptions. He also returned four kickoffs for another 79 yards.
David Garrard continued his solid play at quarterback and still has not thrown an interception this season. He completed 22 of 34 with touchdowns to George Wrighster and Reggie Williams, but Garrard spreads the ball fairly evenly to all of his receivers.
Jacksonville overpowered Houston with 457 yards of offense and did not allow a touchdown until there were 29 seconds left in the game.
What you ought to know
QB Matt Schaub, Pass: 19 - 31 - 259 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - 6 - 0
Schaub completed 19 of 31 for 259 yards, but failed to throw a touchdown pass. In the fourth quarter, while being sacked, he fumbled and the ball was returned 77 yards for a Jaguars touchdown. With the game out of hand he was pulled and replaced by Sage Rosenfels.
QB Sage Rosenfels, Pass: 11 - 12 - 82 - 1 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 1 - 1 - 0
Rosenfels entered the game with Houston trailing 37--9 and 5:41 left in the game. To his credit, he led the Texans down the field for their only touchdown.
RB Ahman Green, Rush: 16 - 44 - 0, Rec: 2 - 4 - 0 (4 targets)
Green returned to the lineup after missing three games with a bruised knee. He was only able to average 2.8 yards per carry against the stout Jaguar defense, and added just two receptions for four yards. Samkon Gado replaced him in the lineup with 5:41 left in the game.
RB Samkon Gado, Rush: 4 - 15 - 0, Rec: 3 - 26 - 0 (3 targets)
Gado replaced Ahman Green late in the game with Jacksonville comfortably ahead. He carried four times for 15 yards, added 26 yards on three receptions, and also scored a two point conversion on a two yard run after the Texans' lone touchdown with 29 seconds remaining.
RB Vonta Leach, Rec: 1 - 1 - 1 (1 targets)
Late in the game with Houston hopelessly behind and many of the starters on the bench, Leech caught a touchdown pass from Sage Rosenfels with 29 seconds left.
RB Ron Dayne
Dayne was inactive for this game. He had only been averaging 2.9 yards per carry while filling in for the injured Ahman Green.
WR Kevin Walter, Rush: 1 - -5 - 0, Rec: 12 - 160 - 0 (15 targets)
Walter was by far the most active Houston receiver, although 12 of his 15 targets came in the second half of this game. He also ran a reverse that lost five yards. Walter and Andre Davis seem to be vying to be the number two receiver in the Texans' passing offense when Andre Johnson returns from his knee injury.
WR Andre Davis, Rec: 3 - 30 - 0 (6 targets)
Davis only caught three passes for 30 yards but he had been playing very well filing in for Andre Johnson. He wound up on the wrong end of instant replay twice in this game, however, beginning in the first quarter. Davis caught a short pass from Schaub at the Jacksonville four yard line and cut toward the end zone. He appeared to fumble as he crossed the goal line and the referees' signaled touchdown. The Jaguars' challenged and replay showed that S Sammy Knight actually forced Davis to fumble inches short of the goal line causing the ball to roll through the end zone and out of bounds for a touchback.
Later, Davis caught a pass in the fourth quarter and was down on the ground when CB Brian Williams wrestled the ball away. It was ruled an interception. Houston challenged the play, the officials looked at the replay, but the interception still stood.
WR David Anderson, Rec: 3 - 33 - 0 (3 targets)
Among Anderson's three receptions was a diving 11 yard catch on third and ten in the third quarter with the Texans trailing 16--6.
WR Andre Johnson
Johnson remained sidelined with a knee injury.
TE Owen Daniels, Rec: 5 - 79 - 0 (8 targets)
Daniels continues to be a key element in the Houston passing attack. His 79 receiving yards was second on the team to Kevin Walter.
TE Joel Dreessen, Rec: 1 - 8 - 0 (1 targets)
In limited play, Dreesen caught a fourth quarter pass for eight yards.
PK Kris Brown 3 - 3 FG, 0 - 0 XP, 9 points
Brown made three field goals from 20, 35, and 33 yards.
HOU Rush Defense
Jacksonville rushed 26 times for 244 yards which works out to 9.4 yards per carry.
HOU Pass Defense
Houston was able to sack Garrard once, but gave up two touchdown passes and 221 total yards.
QB David Garrard, Pass: 22 - 34 - 221 - 2 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 5 - 26 - 0
Garrard had another solid game and still has not thrown an interception yet this season. He completed 22 of 34 for two touchdowns and was able to gain another 26 yards scrambling out of trouble and away from the dangerous Houston pass rush. He is clearly in charge of this offense and yet he is still growing into the role of NFL starting quarterback.
QB Quinn Gray, Rush: 1 - -1 - 0
Gray took a knee at the end of the game.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Rush: 12 - 125 - 2, Rec: 4 - 59 - 0 (5 targets)
Jones-Drew began the season slowly but gained 125 yards on 12 carries, although 57 came on one touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also scored a touchdown on a seven yard run, caught four passes for 59 yards, and returned four kickoffs for another 79 yards.
RB Fred Taylor, Rush: 6 - 90 - 0, Rec: 1 - -2 - 0 (3 targets)
On Jacksonville's second play of the game, Taylor took a handoff up the middle, cut to his left and dashed down the sideline 76 yards to the Houston 14. He only carried a total of five times, but that run set the tone as the Jaguars rushed for 244 yards in the game. Taylor suffered a groin pull in the first half of the game and did not return to the field.
RB Greg Jones, Rush: 2 - 4 - 0, Rec: 1 - 27 - 0 (2 targets)
Jones saw limited duty, but is still a strong third option in this offense. He carried twice for four yards and caught a screen pass in the third quarter for 27 yards.
WR Reggie Williams, Rec: 5 - 38 - 1 (5 targets)
Williams caught every pass thrown to him including a nine yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but he also lost two fumbles.
WR Dennis Northcutt, Rec: 4 - 46 - 0 (6 targets)
The Jaguars set Northcutt in the slot to get away from CB Dunta Robinson's coverage. Northcutt is a sure handed veteran receiver who seems to have gained the confidence of Garrard.
WR Matt Jones, Rec: 3 - 18 - 0 (6 targets)
While Jones caught an important fourth down pass to keep one drive alive, he also dropped a third down pass that killed another. In the red zone, Jones was targeted on three fade routes but could he could not connect. In the second quarter he was targeted on two consecutive fades before Wrighster's touchdown.
WR Ernest Wilford, Rec: 1 - 4 - 0 (5 targets)
Wilford only managed to catch one pass for one yard.
TE Marcedes Lewis, Rec: 2 - 30 - 0 (4 targets)
Lewis caught two passes for 30 yards.
TE George Wrighster, Rec: 1 - 1 - 1 (2 targets)
Despite only being targeted twice, in the second quarter Wrighster benefited from Matt Jones failing to catch either fade pass in the end zone on first and second down. On third down he caught Garrard's one yard TD throw, Jacksonville's first score of the game.
PK John Carney 1 - 2 FG, 4 - 5 XP, 7 points
In the first quarter, Carney's 27 yard field goal was nullified by an offensive face mask penalty. His re-kick from 42 yards faded wide right. He also hit four of five extra points (he had one blocked) and connected on a 37 yard field goal. Following the first Jaguars touchdown Carney recovered his own onsides kick which led to his field goal and 10--6 halftime lead.
JAX Rush Defense
Ahman Green returned to the Houston lineup but he was only able to average 2.8 yards per carry. As a team the Texans only rushed for 61 yards.
JAX Pass Defense
While Houston gained 329 passing yards they only scored one touchdown and that was after the outcome had long been settled. Schaub was sacked by DE Paul Spicer, fumbled, and the ball returned for a Jaguars touchdown by LB Daryl Smith.
