Week 7 Game Recap: Arizona Cardinals 19, Washington Redskins 21
What you need to know
Arizona Cardinals
QB Kurt Warner strapped up his left elbow and almost pulled off the upset. The Arizona Cardinals played hard all the way and fell a failed two point conversion short from a tied score late in the fourth quarter. The two point conversion became a necessity due to a blocked PAT earlier in the game.
Edgerrin James tallied 27 carries on his way to 83 yards. Anquan Boldin returned to action and was a scoring force, pulling in two touchdown passes on eight receptions, albeit for only 29 yards. Larry Fitzgerald was held out of the end zone, but tallied six receptions for 97 yards.
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins followed a game plan that has been eerily similar all season long, play well for three quarters then go into a shell where they can barely make a first down. Luckily for them, the Arizona Cardinals were unable to finish the job the way the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers did earlier this season.
Leading the scoring for the Redskins was Clinton Portis, who posted two scores on eighteen carries, for forty three yards. Jason Campbell was held to just 95 yards on 12 of 18 passing and did throw an interception.
The key for the Redskins may be that their skeleton crew offensive line did not suffer yet another injury, and managed to get the win.
What you ought to know
QB Kurt Warner, Pass: 27 - 41 - 282 - 2 TD / 2 INT, Rush: 1 - 0 - 0
Warner managed to make the start, despite two torn ligaments in his left elbow. His 41 attempts translated into 27 completions, 282 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately for the Cardinals two interceptions came along with those 27 completions, one returned for a touchdown. Warner did his best working around the limited mobility of his left arm, handing off with his right hand for both left and right side rushes.
QB Tim Rattay, Pass: 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 TD / 0 INT
Rattay came in for a single play in the game and threw a one yard touchdown pass to Leonard Pope.
RB Edgerrin James, Rush: 27 - 83 - 0 (1 targets)
The resurgent Edgerrin James had 27 carries, but no receptions, for 83 yards, but was kept out of the end zone, giving up a couple of goalline carries to other Arizona Cardinals running backs. James had 15 carries in the first half as the Cardinals tried to control the clock.
RB J.J. Arrington, Rush: 1 - 2 - 0, Rec: 4 - 47 - 0 (5 targets)
Arrington was in the game often in the passing packages for the Arizona Cardinals. He posted four receptions for 47 yards and had one carry for two yards.
RB Marcel Shipp, Rush: 1 - -1 - 0, Rec: 1 - 7 - 0 (1 targets)
Shipp was used sparingly by the Arizona Cardinals posting one reception for seven yards and one goal line carry for minus one yard.
WR Anquan Boldin, Rec: 8 - 29 - 2 (10 targets)
Anquan was a frequent target by Kurt Warner and turned his ten targets into eight receptions and two touchdowns. For all his work he only posted 29 yards as most of the targets were at the goalline and underneath the Washington Redskins deep zone coverages.
WR Larry Fitzgerald, Rec: 6 - 97 - 0 (11 targets)
Fitzgerald was targeted often by Kurt Warner, but not around the goal line. Fitzgerald posted six receptions for 97 yards. Fitzgerald might have a better day, but was not targeted at all during the second quarter.
WR Bryant Johnson, Rec: 3 - 27 - 0 (4 targets)
With the Arizona Cardinals running many three and four receiver sets, Bryant Johnson saw plenty of playing time. He turned his four targets into three catches for 27 yards.
WR Jerheme Urban, Rec: 3 - 41 - 0 (3 targets)
Urban snagged three passes for 41 yards playing in the Arizona Cardinals four wide receiver sets.
TE Leonard Pope, Rec: 3 - 35 - 1 (4 targets)
Pope turned in a solid performance, hauling in three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. All four of Pope's targets didn't come until the fourth quarter.
PK Neil Rackers 0 - 1 FG, 1 - 2 XP, 1 points
One of the less memorable games for Neil Rackers was highlighted by a facemasking penalty on Rackers after a blocked PAT. He got into a scuffle with a Washington defender that bumped him (legally) after the kick. Rackers had a chance to win the game late on a 54 yard attempt in the final seconds, but pulled it slightly left.
ARI Rush Defense
The Arizona Cardinals rush defense held the run first Washington Redskins to just 73 yards on the ground. They were strong against the run, but they forced no turnovers.
ARI Pass Defense
The Arizona Cardinals pass defense was solid against the pass, giving up no passing touchdowns and holding the Washington Redskins to just 95 yards. They also managed one interception.
QB Jason Campbell, Pass: 12 - 18 - 95 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - 7 - 0
Campbell did not have a stellar day, only throwing for 95 yards and was picked off once on a deflected screen pass. Campbell managed to get rid of the ball fairly quickly behind the Washington Redskins offensive line, only giving up one sack and no fumbles.
RB Clinton Portis, Rush: 18 - 43 - 2, Rec: 2 - 14 - 0 (2 targets)
Portis continued his role as the major factor on the Washington Redskins offense, posting just 43 yards, but scored twice on short runs of two and one yards. Portis managed to haul in two passes for 14 yards.
RB Mike Sellers, Rush: 5 - 11 - 0, Rec: 3 - 11 - 0 (3 targets)
Sellers continues to factor into the Washington Redskins game plan, especially in short yardage situations. Sellers posted 11 yards on three receptions and had a surprising five carries for 11 yards. Sellers was held out of the end zone however.
RB Ladell Betts, Rush: 3 - 12 - 0 (1 targets)
The limited role for Ladell Betts continued, as he had three carries for 12 yards and no receptions. Betts did step in as the kick returner when Rock Cartwright left the game with a quad injury.
WR Antwaan Randle El, Rec: 3 - 54 - 0 (5 targets)
The leading focus of the anemic pass offense of the Washington Redskins in week seven, Randle El pulled in three catches for 54 yards to lead the team.
WR Santana Moss, Rec: 2 - 8 - 0 (2 targets)
Moss continues to be in a slump, posting just eight yards on two catches, both in the second quarter. He pulled himself out of last week's game after he didn't feel right and he wasn't much more effective in this game.
WR James Thrash, Rec: 1 - 5 - 0 (2 targets)
Thrash played sparingly in the slot and managed to pull in one catch for five yards. Thrash continues to contribute primarily on special teams.
WR Brandon Lloyd (1 targets)
Lloyd continues to not be a significant portion of the Washington Redskins game plan, posting just one catch for six yards.
TE Chris Cooley, Rec: 1 - 3 - 0 (2 targets)
Cooley was not a factor against the Arizona Cardinals, posting just one catch for three yards on only two targets. Like most of his teammates in week seven the offense just wasn't there against an improving Cardinal defense.
PK Shaun Suisham 0 - 1 FG, 3 - 3 XP, 3 points
Suisham was three for three on extra points, a key factor in this game, but missed his only field goal attempt, a 41 yard attempt.
WAS Rush Defense
The Washington Redskins rush defense effectively controlled the Arizona Cardinals rush offense, holding them to just 84 yards on 30 carries, forcing one fumble.
WAS Pass Defense
The Washington Redskins pass defense was not their usual stalwart self, giving up three touchdown passes and 283 yards through the air. They did manage two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, to make amends for their otherwise subpar performance.
