Week 9 Game Recap: Carolina Panthers 7, Tennessee Titans 20

What you need to know

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers were under pressure the entire game by the Tennessee defense. David Carr was unable to find much success, throwing for just 107 yards and one touchdown. Carr was injured late in the game and was replaced by Matt Moore. Moore only played on Carolina's final drive. He completed two of five passes.

DeShaun Foster carried the ball 17 times for 63 yards. Carolina never really got close to the Tennessee goal line so Foster did not have a legitimate chance to score. DeAngelo Williams only ran the ball four times and caught two passes.

Steve Smith was again shut down this week. The last two weeks, Smith has just a total of five catches. Against Tennessee, he had just three catches for 15 yards. Drew Carter and Keary Colbert also caught three passes. Carter had the only score for Carolina on an 18 yard touchdown pass.

The Carolina defense recovered two fumbles, had three sacks and also intercepted Vince Young twice. That was the highlight for the Panthers this week. Their offense did not do much to keep them off the field and give them a chance to rest up.

Tennessee Titans

Vince Young started off the game with a ten play drive resulting in a touchdown. He capped off the drive with a three yard touchdown run. Young went 14 of 23 for 110 yards and two interceptions. He also added 25 rushing yards.

LenDale White carried the ball 31 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. White ran hard and picked up tough yards. He carried the ball 22 times in the second half. That led Tennessee to almost a seven minute time of possession margin.

Bo Scaife led the Tennessee receivers with six catches for 35 yards. Roydell Williams added three catches and Justin Gage had two.

The Tennessee defense was the difference in this game when they completely shut down the Carolina offense. The defense gave up just 78 yards rushing and 143 yards passing. They recorded seven sacks and two interceptions.

He threw one interception and it was on a play that was blocked at the line and caught by defensive lineman Travis LaBoy.

QB Matt Moore, Pass: 2 - 5 - 36 - 0 TD / 1 INT

Moore came into the game for the final drive by Carolina. He threw five passes, completing two of them. He passed for 36 yards and threw one interception on an overthrow deep down the field.

RB DeShaun Foster, Rush: 17 - 63 - 0, Rec: 2 - 6 - 0 (2 targets)

Foster carried the ball 17 times for 63 yards. He had all but four of the Carolina carries out of the backfield. He added two catches for six yards. He did not have any red zone touches as Carolina only had one play inside the Tennessee 20 yard line, a touchdown catch by Drew Carter.

RB DeAngelo Williams, Rush: 4 - 15 - 0, Rec: 2 - 10 - 0 (2 targets)

DeAngelo Williams carried the ball four times for 15 yards. He also caught two passes for ten yards.

RB Brad Hoover, Rec: 2 - 12 - 0 (2 targets)

WR Keary Colbert, Rec: 3 - 30 - 0 (8 targets)

Colbert saw eight passes thrown his way. He caught three passes for 30 yards. Only one of his catches went for a first down. He was targeted deep three times during the game but did not come up with any of those passes.

Steve Smith was thrown to ten times but only caught three passes for 15 yards. At one point early in the fourth quarter, Smith had just two catches for zero total yards. CAR Rush Defense

The Carolina rush defense was unable to stop the run. They gave up 100 yards and a touchdown to LenDale White. They also gave up a rushing touchdown to Vince Young. Tennessee picked up ten first downs on the ground. The only plus side for the Carolina rush defense was they forced a fumble by White. Unfortunately, the Carolina offense was unable to take advantage of the turnover.

CAR Pass Defense

The Carolina pass defense played well against Vince Young and the Titans. They held Young to just 110 passing yards on 14 completions. The Panthers intercepted Young twice in the game. On one of them, the Tennessee receiver stopped and Ken Lucas followed the ball to the back of the end zone and made a nice diving catch for the interception. The other interception was on a deep pass into the end zone. Carolina intercepted the ball three yards deep in their end zone.

QB Vince Young, Pass: 14 - 23 - 110 - 0 TD / 2 INT, Rush: 8 - 25 - 1

Vince Young started off the game in good fashion. On the opening drive, he went four for four and had two carries including a three yard touchdown run. The rest of the game was pretty dismal for Young. He finished the game 14 of 23 for 110 yards and two interceptions. He ran the ball eight times for 25 yards. His rushing touchdown came on a play he dropped back to pass. He didn't see anyone open so he pulled the ball down and scrambled into the end zone for the score.

RB LenDale White, Rush: 31 - 100 - 1, Rec: 1 - 1 - 0 (1 targets)

White was a workhorse, carrying the ball 31 times for 100 yards and a score. On his touchdown, he carried the ball four straight times with all of them being power runs. White did fumble deep in his own territory but lucky for the Titans it did not hurt them. Carolina missed a field goal on the ensuing drive. On the opening drive, White had two carries inside the Carolina ten yard line but could only get it down to the three yard line. Young took it into the end zone from the three.

RB Chris Henry, Rush: 3 - -3 - 0, Rec: 1 - 18 - 0 (1 targets)

Chris Henry was used sparingly. He ran the ball just three times for minus three yards. He was thrown to once, catching the pass for a pickup of 18 yards. The pass came on a third and 17 play. The drive continued and resulted in a Tennessee field goal.

WR Roydell Williams, Rec: 3 - 22 - 0 (7 targets)

Williams was the most targeted receiver by Vince Young in this game. He caught three of the seven passes thrown to him. He picked up 22 yards on those three catches. Both of Young interceptions were targeted for Williams. On one of the interceptions, it appeared Williams stopped the route at the goal line and Young threw the pass to the back of the end zone.

WR Justin Gage, Rec: 2 - 23 - 0 (3 targets)

Justin Gage was targeted three times in the game. He caught two passes for 23 yards. He picked up a first down right before the half and the Titans were able to score a field goal as the first half ended.

WR Brandon Jones, Rush: 1 - 18 - 0 (2 targets)

Brandon Jones was thrown to two times but both deep passes were incomplete. He did have an 18 yard run on an end around.

TE Bo Scaife, Rec: 6 - 35 - 0 (6 targets)

Bo Scaife caught six passes for 35 yards. Scaife caught all six passes thrown to him. All of the passes were thrown short, usually when Young had nothing else downfield. Scaife picked up three first downs in the game. He caught a short pass and took it down to the Carolina nine yard line.

TE Ben Hartsock, Rec: 1 - 11 - 0 (1 targets)

Ben Hartsock caught one pass for 11 yards. Hartsock picked up a first down on third and five. The drive resulted in White's touchdown run.

TE Ben Troupe (1 targets)

Troupe was thrown to once but the pass was incomplete near midfield.

PK Rob Bironas 2 - 2 FG, 2 - 2 XP, 8 points

Bironas made field goals from 47 and 53 yards. He also made both of his extra point attempts.

TEN Pass Defense

The Tennessee pass defense dominated the game. They only gave up 143 passing yards and had seven sacks in the game. Haynesworth had three sacks with four other players adding one each. The Titans intercepted David Carr once and Matt Moore once.
