Week 14 Game Recap: Carolina Panthers 6, Jacksonville Jaguars 37

What you need to know

Carolina Panthers

Although the Panthers were outplayed in the first half, they were still in the game. The second half was an entirely different story. They were outscored 27-0 in the second half. Vinny Testaverde ended up getting benched in the second half for Matt Moore. Neither was able to do anything against the Jacksonville defense. Testaverde played the majority of snaps and ended up 13 of 28 for 84 yards. He did not throw a touchdown and had one interception that was returned for a score.

DeShaun Foster carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards. His fumble at the start of the second half was the turning point in the game. From that point on, Carolina was completely dominated. DeAngelo Williams added just seven yards on three carries.

Steve Smith led the Carolina receivers with six catches for 44 yards. Drew Carter had four catches for 26 yards. The best chance for a touchdown came on an over throw of Jeff King. He had the defender beat down the middle but Testaverde sent the pass over his out stretched hands.

The Carolina defense wore down as the game went on. They were on the field for almost 39 minutes. The defense gave up two passing touchdowns and did not have any interceptions. They did force a fumble but the offense could only muster a field goal off of it. The defense gave up a huge touchdown run when Fred Taylor went right up the middle for 80 yards.

Jacksonville Jaguars

David Garrard had a good game, going 20 of 36 for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over and was not sacked. Garrard hit Reggie Williams for a 22 yard touchdown in the first quarter. In the third quarter, he hit Matt Jones on a six yard touchdown pass. He just missed a third touchdown when he connected with Matt Jones in the back of the end zone but Jones just couldn't get both feet in bounds. They settled for a field goal.

Fred Taylor had a big game. He carried the ball 18 times for 132 yards and a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, he had an 80 yard touchdown run when he made a couple of cuts and then shot right up the middle of the field. Maurice Jones--Drew didn't do much in this game. He carried the ball 11 times for 24 yards. He did have a goal line opportunity but couldn't cash in.

Reggie Williams led the Jacksonville receivers with 90 yards and a touchdown. He scored the first touchdown of the game on a 22 yard pass play from Garrard. Matt Jones added a touchdown on his only catch of the game. Eight different players had a reception for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars defense dominated the Panthers. They only allowed 149 total net yards. Carolina had just ten first downs in the game. Jacksonville forced two turnovers and returned one of them for a touchdown. Carolina was only able to manage two field goals, one of which was after a fumble in Jacksonville territory.

What you ought to know

QB Vinny Testaverde, Pass: 13 - 28 - 84 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 1 - -3 - 0

Testaverde did not have good touch at all in this game. He was uncharacteristically missing his receivers when it looked like they might have a step on the defender. He completed 13 of 28 passes for 84 yards and no touchdowns. Testaverde threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Also, he had Jeff King down the middle but over threw him on what would have been a touchdown.

QB Matt Moore, Pass: 3 - 10 - 21 - 0 TD / 0 INT

Moore took over for an ineffective Vinny Testaverde. He came into the game with just under ten minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Moore's stats weren't very impressive either. He completed three of ten passes for 21 yards.

RB DeShaun Foster, Rush: 11 - 46 - 0, Rec: 1 - 3 - 0 (3 targets)

Foster carried 11 times for 46 yards. He fumbled at his own 21 yard line. Jacksonville capitalized on the turnover with their second touchdown to raise the score to 17-6. Foster did not have any red zone carries.

RB DeAngelo Williams, Rush: 3 - 7 - 0, Rec: 2 - 5 - 0 (4 targets)

Williams carried the ball just three times for seven yards. He was targeted four times but caught just two passes for five yards. In the fourth quarter, Carolina tried to pick up two fourth downs going to Williams. He picked up the first one on a seven yard run. The second one was an incomplete pass.

RB Brad Hoover (1 targets)

Hoover was targeted once in the game. Testaverde lofted the ball to him by the sideline and the ball was intercepted for a touchdown.

WR Steve Smith, Rec: 6 - 44 - 0 (11 targets)

Steve Smith caught six passes for 44 yards. Smith picked up first downs on three of his catches. He only had one chance inside the Jacksonville 20 yard line. It was an incomplete from the Jacksonville 14 yard line.

WR Drew Carter, Rec: 4 - 26 - 0 (11 targets)

Carter was targeted 11 times but only caught four passes for 26 yards. His longest catch was just eight yards. Carter had a red zone catch for eight yards that was wiped out when Carolina accepted a Jacksonville penalty. On the same drive, Testaverde tried to hit him from the Jacksonville 14 yard line but the pass was incomplete.

WR Keary Colbert, Rec: 1 - 8 - 0 (3 targets)

Colbert didn't see many opportunities in this game. He was only targeted three times. Colbert caught one pass for eight yards. His catch was on Carolina's final drive and was in their own territory.

TE Jeff King, Rec: 2 - 19 - 0 (5 targets)

Jeff King had two catches for 19 yards. He was over thrown down the middle when he had a step on the defender. A better throw would have been a game tying touchdown at that time. Carolina had to settle for a field goal instead. In the fourth quarter, King caught an 11 yard pass down to the Jacksonville 19 yard line. Carolina ended up turning the ball over on downs.

TE Dante Rosario (1 targets)

Dante Rosario was targeted once in the game. Testaverde tried to hit him deep down the left side but the pass was incomplete.

PK John Kasay 2 - 2 FG, 0 - 0 XP, 6 points

John Kasay hit both of his field goal attempts. One was from 49 yards and the other was 39 yards. Carolina did not have any extra point attempts.

CAR Rush Defense

The Carolina rush defense gave up 178 net rushing yards. Jacksonville had eight first downs on the ground and because they ran the ball effectively, they dominated the time of possession. The Jaguars held the ball for almost 18 minutes more than the Panthers. The Carolina defense was unable to stop Fred Taylor, who ran hard and broke a number of tackles. The icing on the cake was when Fred Taylor busted a huge 80 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The only highlight for the Carolina defense was when they forced a fumble when Chris Harris put his helmet right on the ball. The play resulted in a 21 yard loss for Taylor.

CAR Pass Defense

The Carolina pass defense was not good either. They gave up 249 passing yards and two touchdowns. They did not have any sacks nor did they have an interception. The Jaguars gained 14 first downs via the pass. They just could not get the pressure on Garrard that was needed to disrupt his passing game.

QB David Garrard, Pass: 20 - 36 - 230 - 2 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 1 - 8 - 0

Garrard went 20 of 36 for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He did a great job managing the game and put together six scoring drives for Jacksonville. Garrard led the Jaguars on four drives of nine plays or more. They controlled the ball and ate up minutes on the clock. He hit Reggie Williams on a 22 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. At the beginning of the second half, after Foster fumbled, Garrard hit Matt Jones in the back of the end zone for a six yard touchdown. Earlier in the game, Jones made a catch right along the back line of the end zone but just could not get both feet in bounds.

QB Quinn Gray, Pass: 1 - 1 - 19 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 4 - 13 - 0

Quinn Gray came into the game late in the fourth quarter. He threw one pass for 19 yards and it was good for a first down leading to their final field goal. On third and nine, he also scrambled for 15 yards. It took the clock to the two minute warning. Gray just knelt down three times after the warning.

RB Fred Taylor, Rush: 18 - 132 - 1, Rec: 2 - 24 - 0 (2 targets)

Fred Taylor had a huge game running for 132 yards on 18 carries. Throughout the game, Taylor ran hard breaking a number of tackles. From the Carolina 20 yard line, Garrard hit him on a short pass that Taylor took down to the two yard line. Later in the game, Taylor picked up four yards to the Carolina seven yard line. He didn't get another chance on that drive. Late in the third, Taylor got a carry from the three yard line but lost two yards. His highlight was an 80 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Taylor made a couple of quick cuts and was gone right up the middle. Taylor did fumble in the game when the defender put his helmet right on the ball and it flew backwards for a 21 yard loss. The defense would hold Carolina to a field goal.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Rush: 11 - 24 - 0, Rec: 2 - 21 - 0 (4 targets)

Jones-Drew didn't do much at all in this game. He had 11 carries for just 24 yards. His best play was on fourth and two when he picked up 13 yards on a pass down to the Carolina 22 yard line. On the next play Garrard threw a touchdown to Williams. In the second quarter, he had a goal line opportunity from the two yard line but lost a yard. Jones-Drew caught two passes in the game for 21 yards.

RB Greg Jones, Rush: 4 - 1 - 0 (1 targets)

Jones was thrown to early in the game but the pass was incomplete. He didn't see the ball again until the very end of the game. He got four carries for a total of one yard.

WR Reggie Williams, Rec: 5 - 90 - 1 (9 targets)

Williams led the Jacksonville receivers with five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. He caught a 22 yard pass for the opening score of the game. On that drive, he had a 23 yard catch called back due to a penalty on the Jaguars. All five of his catches were good for first downs.

WR Ernest Wilford, Rec: 4 - 38 - 0 (8 targets)

Wilford was targeted eight times, catching four passes for 38 yards. Three of his four catches went for first downs. His other catch came up two yards short of a first down when the Jaguars needed 18 yards. Wilford did get a chance to score but the pass was incomplete from the five yard line.

WR Dennis Northcutt, Rec: 3 - 37 - 0 (5 targets)

Northcutt caught three passes for 37 yards. His big play was a 27 yard catch down to the Carolina 20 yard line. It led to a field goal. Later, on a third and five, Northcutt caught a three yard pass to the Carolina two yard line.

WR Matt Jones, Rec: 1 - 6 - 1 (4 targets)

Matt Jones made a catch in the back of the end zone but couldn't get both feet in bounds. In the second half, he again caught a pass on the back line of the end zone but was able to get both feet in for the six yard touchdown. It was his only catch of the game.

TE Marcedes Lewis, Rec: 3 - 25 - 0 (4 targets)

Lewis caught three passes for 25 yards. He had a couple of red zone opportunities in the game. He caught a one yard pass from the Carolina seven yard line. Later in the game he caught a 13 yard pass down to the Carolina three yard line.

TE Richard Angulo, Rec: 1 - 8 - 0 (1 targets)

Angulo had one catch for eight yards. The play was on second and 10 from the Jacksonville side of the field.

PK Josh Scobee 3 - 3 FG, 4 - 4 XP, 13 points

Scobee made three field goals in the game. He hit from 21, 20 and 33 yards. Scobee also made all four of the extra point attempts.

JAX Rush Defense

The Jacksonville rush defense held Carolina to just 50 net rushing yards. Carolina only gained three first downs via the run. They forced a fumble of DeShaun Foster at the start of the second half. It was a huge turnover and led to the Jaguars taking a 17-6 lead. The defense gave up just two runs of over ten yards. Both were 11 yard runs by Foster. Jacksonville held Carolina to eight drives of five plays or less.

JAX Pass Defense

The Jacksonville pass defense dominated the Panthers. They held Carolina to 99 net yards passing. They put pressure on Testaverde all game and threw off his timing. Eventually Testaverde was benched and Matt More replaced him. Moore didn't do any better against the dominating Jacksonville defense. The pass defense got one sack and forced an interception. The interception came in the fourth quarter when Testaverde tried to hit Brad Hoover out by the left sideline. The pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
