Dynasty Watch - Week 17

Posted 12/26 by Jeff Tefertiller, Sigmund Bloom, William Grant and Jeff Pasquino, Exclusive to Footballguys.com

For the 2007 season, the Dynasty Staff highlighted 133 different NFL players for they dynasty potential. Some of these guys really came through. Some did not. Others are still a question mark for the future. Here's a recap of the 2007 Dynasty Watch players from the NFC that did not make the playoffs:

Bryant Johnson, WR, Arizona Cardinals (Week 5)

Accomplishments - Johnson got some starter action when Anquan Boldin missed time with an injury, and showed yet again that he was not a bust in the NFL despite not winning a full time starting job after being selected in the first round. Johnson used his natural size and toughness to catch 45 passes for over 500 yards and a couple of TDs in 2007.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Johnson was starting in place of an injured Boldin at the time, and he was going to occupy the position of first in line off the bench in a potent passing offense for the remainder of the year, not to mention his impending free agency in 2008. Johnson delivered with a TD or over 50 yards receiving in three of his four starts after appearing in dynasty watch.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Johnson should get to compete for a starting spot, if he is not just given a spot outright on his new team in 2008. The Cardinals would be foolish to invest in Johnson given that they have one of the best tandems of young WRs in the league. Johnson's value will only rise in the offseason, and could explode if he lands in the right place.

Leonard Pope, TE, Arizona Cardinals (Week 11)

Accomplishments - Pope got past the struggles of his rookie year, and seemed more athletic and comfortable on the field as the season went on. He only caught 23 passes on the year, but converted five of them into touchdowns.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Pope had just broken out with a two TD game vs. Arizona. He ended up scoring one more time before dislocating (!) his ankle in week 14.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - If Pope can get all of his speed back after his grisly injury, he could be an intriguing bye week/injury TE. There's an opening at the #3 spot in the target pecking order in Arizona with Bryant Johnson going on the free agent market and Pope has shown the ability to get open downfield in addition to being a towering target in the red zone.

Ben Patrick, TE, Arizona Cardinals (Week 16)

Accomplishments - Patrick was able to make the team after medical issues caused him to drop to the 7th round. He ended up getting active in the last eight games, and caught seven passes for 73 yards and two TDs, including one clutch TD on 4th down in the 4th quarter of a tight game vs. San Francisco

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Patrick showed the athleticism to be a very viable target in the passing game while at Delaware, and he got an extended chance to show his wares after Pope went down in week 14. Patrick also has the benefit of being a pass catching tight end in an offense with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin
Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Leonard Pope isn't going anywhere, but Patrick proved that his skills translate in 2007, and he's a name to remember if he ever gets an opportunity to start in the NFL.

Darnell Dockett, DT, Arizona Cardinals (Week 5)

Accomplishments - Dockett flourished as a 3-4 DE in the new defense, notching 44 solo tackles and 9.5 sacks. He was a natural fit in the scheme and broke into the top 20 overall defensive linemen in IDP leagues, rarefied air for a defensive tackle/3-4 end.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Dockett had posted eye popping numbers through the first month of the season, and his performance for the remainder of the year proved that his hot start was not a fluke.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Dockett is in the prime of his career. 2007 may prove to be a high water mark for him, but he's golden in DT required leagues, and will hold value in leagues that don't break out his natural position.

Calvin Pace, LB, Arizona Cardinals (Week 10)

Accomplishments - Pace really got comfortable in the 3-4 defense in late October and ended up putting up outstanding tackle numbers from the OLB position in place of the injured Chike Okeafor. Pace even showed some versatility by playing some snaps inside when Karlos Dansby went down.. He finished with 97 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, and also collected an INT, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble along the way. He was a borderline LB2 in the second half of the season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Pace was getting more active in the 3-4 defense by the week, and he was starting to deliver on his first round pick promise. He has He'll be a coveted free agent.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Pace should be re-signed in Arizona after he showed a knack for the 3-4 OLB position. The team desperately needed to lock him up, and GM Rod Graves called re-signing him their top priority this offseason There's no reason he can't stick as an LB3 with added value in sack heavy leagues.

Byron Leftwich, QB, Atlanta Falcons (Week 16)

Accomplishments - Leftwich was signed to a deal after being cut right before the season started, but he barely got a chance to be the successful plan B the Falcons had envisioned before he got hurt. Leftwich only started two games, and did not complete either.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Leftwich is by far the most skilled QB returning to the Falcons, and his price is reasonable for a quarterback of his quality, and he has been more than relevant in fantasy leagues in the past - his injuries have masked his starting quality PPG during his healthy stretches.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - At this point it's hard to say who is going to end up coaching the Falcons in 2008, and the answer to that question will tell a lot about Leftwich's future. Either way, the offensive line will have to improve and stay healthy, or Leftwich will end up injured yet again.

Laurent Robinson, WR, Atlanta Falcons (Week 16)

Accomplishments - Robinson went from being an unheralded small school third round rookie to starting in the NFL by the end of the season. He finished his debut season with 37 catches for 437 yards, capped by a 7/114/1 performance in week 16 after Michael Jenkins had been demoted to make room for Robinson in the starting lineup.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Like Jacoby Jones, the fact that Robinson was a third round pick even though he went to a lower level (in his case, FCS, formerly known as 1-AA) shows that he has top notch physical gifts, and the auspicious start to his career shows he knows how to make them translate into production.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Robinson should begin the 2008 season as he ended in the 07 season, in the starting lineup. He has the skills to be a deep threat, although his potential is capped for the short term by inexperience and the relative unlikelihood that the 08 offense will be as wide open as the Petrino offense was with Chris Redman at the helm in the second half of 2007.

Daren Stone, S, Atlanta Falcons (Week 17)

Accomplishments - Stone got into the lineup when Lawyer Milloy was sidelined at the end of the season, and made a few defensive stops, showing promise for the future.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Stone has outstanding natural size, speed, and explosion, as evidenced by clips of him jumping over cars in a single bound on YouTube Lawyer Milloy is in the twilight of his career, and Stone is the natural choice to get the first crack at replacing him.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Any safety that is 6'3" 220, but can run sub 4.5 is one to watch in dynasty leagues. If Stone emerges from 2008 training camp as the starting strong safety, he's worth rostering in all but the deepest of leagues.

David Carr, QB, Carolina Panthers (Week 4)

Accomplishments - Carr was entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons. His main accomplishment was successfully turning a second fan base against him for life. Carr did not throw for more than 155 yards in any of his starts this year and ended up throwing three touchdowns against five interceptions.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Opportunity knocked when Jake Delhomme went down, but Carr should be left for dead in dynasty leagues after his 2007 performance.
Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Carr mentioned that he was considering retirement after multiple head injuries in 2007, and he'd be smart to see that urge all the way through.

Matt Moore, QB, Carolina Panthers (Week 11)

Accomplishments - Moore was scooped up by Carolina after Dallas tried to slip him onto the practice squad before the season started, and once Jake Delhomme got hurt, he was destined to see action in 2007. He made the most of his opportunity, leading the Panthers to two wins in three games, throwing for over 60% accuracy and getting Steve Smith involved along the way.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - David Carr was banged up and going down in flames, and Vinny Testaverde was banged up and about to turn 44, leaving the fans asking for Moore. He showed a good short to intermediate range arm, command of the offense and good footwork in his short stint as a starter.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Moore has earned the backup slot, and he might even get the call in 2008 if there are any problems with Delhomme's rehab from Tommy John Surgery.

Drew Carter, WR, Carolina Panthers (Week 12)

Accomplishments - Carter started out hot with two TDs and took more and more playing time away from Keary Colbert as the season went on. The high point of the year was Carter's five catch, 132 yard game plus a score game vs. Green Bay in week 11.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Carter has flashed his size/speed combo as a deep threat many times in his young career, but no more impressively than he did in that Green Bay, which should have put teams looking for WR help in free agency on notice. C

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Carter's role is sure to grow if he finds a new home in free agency, and if he doesn't, that's probably a sign that the Panthers aren't that excited about Dwayne Jarrett's development, so either way, his stock is on the rise. He has the tools to be a WR3/4 if he becomes a starter.

Jeff King, TE, Carolina Panthers (Week 9)

Accomplishments - King earned a starting spot after Kris Mangum retired and started out hot, with at least four catches in the first three games of the season. He finished the year with over 400 yards receiving on 46 catches and almost cracked the top 20 fantasy TEs on the year.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - His year peaked after a 10 catch game as David Carr's security blanket in week 8. King's role in the passing offense waxed and waned through a period of little fantasy significance until he became nearly nonexistent after the emergence of Dante Rosario at the end of the season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - King is a good enough football player to get playing time, and he's not a liability out in a pass pattern, but he lacks the speed or natural receiving ability to ever be a major factor as a fantasy TE.

Chris Harris, FS, Carolina Panthers (Week 6)

Accomplishments - Harris made the Panthers look very smart for giving the Bears a fifth round pick to acquire his services in anticipation of Mike Minter's retirement. He tallied almost 100 total tackles and forced an extraordinary eight fumbles, recovering three. Harris finished among the top 10 DBs in any conceivable format and should have ended up rostered in every IDP dynasty league.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Harris was forcing turnovers at a scorching rate early in the season, and didn't slow down too much as the season went on. He's one of the hardest hitting safeties in the league and he's always around the ball.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Harris is signed to a very cheap contract for 2008, but he's a free agent in 2009, and he should get paid well. Harris is only 25 years old, and it looks like he'll be an impact player in IDP leagues for a long time.

Kyle Orton, QB, Chicago Bears (Weeks 4 and 15)

Accomplishments - Most of his career accomplishments occurred in 2005 when he was a green rookie from Purdue. He was also known for his pictures while out on the town his rookie season. In 2007, the third year pro attempted 79 passes, completing 42, for 475 yards in three games. In these games, Orton threw for three touchdowns and a pair of picks. In his career, Kyle Orton has totaled 2,344 passing yards, twelve touchdowns and 15 interceptions in eighteen games.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - The implosion, then subsequent injury to Rex Grossman and the demotion of Brian Griese led to the opportunity of the bearded passer to start. Orton saw his first action since the 2005 season when he was a rookie. The third year pro was not overly productive for fantasy owners in 2007, but could become the starter once again in 2008. Kyle Orton is a player that is under the fantasy radar this offseason He could be a starting quarterback, yet is languished on many waiver wires. Orton is not a good fantasy option for present or the future. He is to become a free agent after the 2008 season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The former Purdue Boilermaker should have the opportunity to compete for the starting job in 2008. As it stands now, the Bears will not bring in competition so it would just be Orton and Rex Grossman competing. There is a possibility that Chicago drafts a quarterback for the future, but they have a myriad of other holes to fill. His performance late in the season should help his chances.

Brian Griese, QB, Chicago Bears (Week 4)

Accomplishments - Griese saw action in seven games in the 2007 season. On the year, 161 of 262 passes for 1803 yards, ten scoring tosses and twelve picks. The veteran passer started off hot in weeks four five and six, but did not play well later in the season when he threw for two touchdowns and six interceptions in his last three games. In his career, Brian Griese has accumulated 18,367 passing yards and 114 touchdowns.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Brian Griese saw action early in the season after the implosion of Rex Grossman. The former Gator did not play well at the beginning of the 2007 season. This left the door wide open for the former Michigan Wolverine. Griese played decent, but not great for the Bears. He had a difficult time leading the team to victory. The ex-Bronco and Buccaneer has had some big games in his career, but has found it difficult to become a long-term option for a NFL team. The 32-year old is signed to a contract for three more years and will be looked at as quarterback depth.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - It is still unknown if the veteran quarterback will be retained by the Chicago Bears. It appears as though he might only be kept if the Bears cannot re-sign Rex Grossman. The journeyman passer will be able to land another job, but most likely will be a backup. His future prospects are minimal at this time. His best-case scenario could be to go to Minnesota or Miami and compete with a young quarterback prospect.

Adrian Peterson, RB, Chicago Bears (Week 13)

Accomplishments - The "other" Adrian Peterson had more touches in 2007 than in the rest of his career combined. He carried the ball 151 times for 510 yards, a mere 3.4 yards per carry. Peterson also caught 51 of 65 pass targets for 420 yards. The former Georgia Southern product was able to reach the endzone three times. This production was good for the 32nd ranked fantasy ball carrier. In his six-year career, the 28-year old has 1,741 total yards and eight scores.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - The ineffectiveness, then injury to Cedric Benson opened the door for the veteran back. The Bears utilized Peterson's versatility well. He is a good receiver as well as a decent ball carrier. Adrian Peterson helped many fantasy owners late in the season. He will be a backup in 2008 and is under contract for two more seasons.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - When Benson returns from his injury, the future value of Peterson is limited. There is also the possibility that the Bears will draft another running back in the 2008 NFL Draft. The team has many holes to fill and Peterson's only hope is that he is primary backup to the former Longhorn. His versatility will ensure he stays on the Bears roster, but the

Garrett Wolfe, RB, Chicago Bears (Week 13)

Accomplishments - The rookie carried the ball 31 times for 85 yards. He also grabbed nine of thirteen pass targets for 117 receiving yards. Garrett Wolfe was able to reach fifty total yards in only to games. His 2.7 yards per carry is not something to be proud of for the rookie.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Late in the season, after the Benson injury, the Bears started utilizing the skills of the rookie. He was drafted late in the third round from Northern Illinois. Garrett Wolfe's diminutive size limits how the Bears can use him. The rookie was unable to be effective as a ball carrier. Even though he was able to get some carries, he could not break tackles due his size and lack of power.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - In 2008, Wolfe's only and best opportunity to see the field will be as a third down running back. The rookie's best assets in the passing game where he can get into space and utilize his quickness. His future in the fantasy world is severely limited, making Wolfe barely worth a roster spot, even in PPR leagues.

Greg Olsen, TE, Chicago Bears (Week 6)

Accomplishments - The former first round pick caught 39 of 66 pass targets for 391 yards and two scores. He had seven games with at least seven pass targets. Even though playing primarily as a backup for the fourteen games he was active, Greg Olsen was able to top forty pass yards five times.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Greg Olsen saw his opportunities soar when Brian Griese was under center. During that time, athletic tight end was lining up all over the field. He was split wide and used in the slot. Olsen is a player that will be better as his blocking improves so he can be on the field for more plays. He is a good fantasy tight end for the future, but owners need to be patient.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The rookie from Miami showed flashes this season. He still backed up veteran Desmond Clark and should slowly emerge as the starter over the next few years. His prospects for 2008 are all based on opportunity. Olsen has talent and only needs the chance. One issue is that Clark is a better blocker and the Bears need to keep him on the field as much as possible. Desmond Clark will be a free agent after the 2008 season which should be perfect timing for Olsen to take over the starting duties at that time. The rookie is almost purely a one-dimensional tight end who excels as a receiver.

Brandon McGowan, SS, Chicago Bears (Week 17)

Accomplishments - The third year pro really came on late in the year. On the season, the 24 year old had four games with at least 14 fantasy points. On the year, McGowan totaled 58 tackles, ten assists, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, and three passes defended. This was good enough for the 78th ranked fantasy defensive back.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - McGowan got his chance to start after the myriad of injuries to the Bear defensive backfield and the benching of Adam Archuleta. With the uncertain future of Mike Brown after his knee injury, it is unknown whether the Bears will draft or sign another safety. Brown has not played an entire season since 2003 and the door could be open for the former Maine star.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Brandon McGowan is the kind of player that never gets a ton of credit. Even though he played well when given the opportunity, it seems as though the Bears will look for a bigger name to start at safety in 2008. He will be valuable depth for the injury-plagued team and could get another opportunity next season, but most likely not at the beginning of the season. Brandon McGowan will be a restricted free agent this offseason, but is expect to remain with the Bears.

Adam Archuleta, SS, Chicago Bears (Week 10)

Accomplishments - The former first round pick from Arizona State totaled 54 tackles, seven assists, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception, and three passes defended in fifteen games. This brings his career total to 391 tackles, 69 assists, 15.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, four interceptions and 18 passes defended. Much of this production came in his first two seasons in the league.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Archuleta had opportunity due to the injuries at the safety position. Even though starting for the Bears, he had difficulty making plays late in the season and was often abused in coverage. Through week twelve, Archuleta had at least six fantasy points in every game. The future of the former Ram and Redskin is not bright. He is not expected to start next season and might have difficulty finding work even though he is just thirty years old. Adam Archuleta has not been a top 20 fantasy defensive back since his rookie season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The former Ram was drafted by Lovie Smith when he was with Saint Louis. With Smith, Archuleta's biggest supporter down on him, it looks like the future prospects of Archuleta are bleak. Even though the former Sun Devil is under contract for two more seasons, he is likely to be a cap casualty. He might be fortunate enough to sign somewhere in 2008, but his days as a NFL starter are over. He is not a viable fantasy player going forward.

J. T. O'Sullivan, QB, Detroit Lions (Weeks 3)

Accomplishments - J.T. O'Sullivan has accomplished very little in his career. He appeared in four games this season, completing a pass in only one. In that game, O'Sullivan completed 13 of 23 games for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. These are the only passing completions in the career of the five-year pro. His accomplishments are limited, just like his future.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Jon Kitna was taking a lot of hits in almost every game. The Lions were in four receiver sets a lot early in the season as Kevin Jones was recovering. During this time, the Lion quarterback position was a great fantasy starter. In the Martz system, the protection is limited. O'Sullivan played in week two after Kitna left the game. His future in the NFL looks limited. The former Cal-Davis star is a free agent in 2008 and probably will not be back in Detroit.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The Lion offense will be more traditional in 2008. The veteran passer will compete with Orlovsky and Drew Stanton to back up the quickly aging Kitna. Stanton should be considered the favorite to be the backup. He could be groomed as the future passer of the franchise. The upside of the Lion quarterback position is not where it was under the direction of Martz.

Aveion Cason, RB, Detroit Lions (Week 13)

Accomplishments - Aveion Cason carried the ball 11 times for 38 yards and hauled in 14 passes for 129 yards. Throughout the career of the backup runner, he has 1,183 total yards and five touchdowns.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - The 28-year old from Illinois State had a great game out of the backfield on Thanksgiving. This was his most productive game of the year. Cason had five of his season 25 touches in the game. He is a free agent this offseason His dynasty prospects are not great for the future.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The veteran looked good on Thanksgiving. He was very effective as a receiver and the Lions utilized his skills well. There might be some opportunity in 2008, depending on the injury status of Kevin Jones and Brian Calhoun. The second year pro, Calhoun, has a similar skill set as Cason and is still well liked in the organization, even with all of the injuries.

T.J. Duckett, RB, Detroit Lions (Weeks 15 and 17)

Accomplishments - In eleven games in the 2007 season, T.J. Duckett carried the ball 65 times for 335 yards and three touchdowns. He also hauled in four receptions, on seven targets, for 54 yards. Duckett has accumulated 2,945 total yards and 36 touchdowns in 77 games during his six-year career. The former first round pick only exceeded 100 yards in one game in the 2007 season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - T.J. Duckett benefited from the knee injury to Kevin Jones late in the season. Duckett was the primary ball carrier for the Lions for several games. The burly ball carrier could not see consistent carries in 2007. This should change with the change at offensive coordinator. It is expected that the Lions will be forced into overpaying for Duckett. He only signed a one-year contract last offseason The former Falcon and Redskin is only 26 years old and could be a viable fantasy back for a few more years.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The former Michigan State Spartan is a free agent in 2008. The Detroit Lions will try ardently to retain him due to the injury to starter Kevin Jones. Tatum Bell is also a free agent. There are no healthy backs on the Lions. Detroit will likely overpay for the former Falcon. In addition, the departure of Mike Martz should lead to more consistent production for the starting Lion ball carriers. It is yet unknown how long Kevin Jones will be out at the start of the 2008 season. It is assumed that Duckett will get an opportunity to start a few games early in the season.

Troy Walters, WR, Detroit Lions (Week 5)

Accomplishments - Troy Walters caught nine of his ten pass targets this season. He finished with 101 passing yards and a touchdown. His career high is 36 receptions and 456 yards. The former Stanford Cardinal has been a fantasy afterthought throughout his career and this should continue.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Walters saw action due to injuries and the slow development of rookie Calvin Johnson. Also, the Lions used a lot of four receiver sets so Walters was only used as the fourth receiver. He saw little action late in the year as a receiver in 2007 and should see even less action in 2008 and beyond. Walters is 31 years old and has never finished higher than 72nd ranked fantasy receiver.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Troy Walters has no real future in fantasy football. He was given opportunity due to injuries and the slow development of rookie Calvin Johnson. In addition, the Lions ran a lot of four receiver sets with the injury of Kevin Jones. The former Colt is a free agent in 2008 and will be lucky to make a NFL team in 2008.

Mike Furrey, WR, Detroit Lions (Week 14)

Accomplishments - Mike Furrey is best known for grabbing 98 receptions in 2006. That will probably be his career high point. The 30-year old from Northern Iowa caught 61 of 90 pass targets for 664 yards and one score. He finished as the 65th ranked fantasy pass catcher. In his career, Furrey has 1,947 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Mike Furrey was pushed to the fourth receiver spot after the emergence of Shaun McDonald. He got a chance for more playing time after the injury to Roy Williams late in the season. The former Ram saw his opportunity reduced with the drafting of Calvin Johnson and the signing of Shaun McDonald. Furrey is under contract for two more seasons and could finish his contract in Detroit.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - With the firing of Mike Martz, the fantasy potential of the former Ram safety has dwindled. The 2008 Lions will be more balanced, and there should be few four receiver sets. Furrey will be left to battle for the slot receiver position going forward. Sadly, his days of having much fantasy value are gone, unless he lands on another team under the guidance of Mike Martz.

Shaun McDonald, WR, Detroit Lions (Week 2)

Accomplishments - This was the first year in McDonald's career that he saw extended playing time. The 2007 season saw the former Sun Devil catch almost as many passes as the previous four years combined. He grabbed 79 of 127 targets for 943 yards and six touchdowns. To the surprise of many, Shaun McDonald finished as the 23rd ranked fantasy receiver this season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Shaun McDonald came out of nowhere to start for the Detroit Lions early in the season. He knew and understood the Martz offense from their days in Saint Louis. The former Ram started several games while the Lions were bringing Calvin Johnson along slowly. Mike Martz was fired last week, so his offensive schemes will be removed from the Detroit Lion offense. This might mean more traditional alignments with only two receivers on many plays.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - With Mike Martz fired as the Lion offensive coordinator; the prospects for the former Ram receiver are diminished. The Detroit offense will be more balanced and Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson should be the starting pass catchers. This will leave McDonald and Mike Furrey battling for the slot position. The former Arizona State star will be a free agent after the 2008 season. He could be reunited with Martz at that time.

Fernando Bryant, CB, Detroit Lions (Week 13)

Accomplishments - On the season, the 30-year old had 59 tackles, 10 assists, one forced fumble, two interceptions, and thirteen passes defended. In his 70 career games, the former first round pick has totaled 263 tackles, 40 assists, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, four interceptions, and 38 passes defended. He has never finished higher than the 50th ranked defensive back in any year.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Bryant had a good start to the season, accumulating at least four solo tackles in his first eleven games. But, from week twelve on, the veteran could not muster more than two solo tackles in any game. Fernando Bryant had his best fantasy season in 2007, finishing as the 50th ranked defensive back. He was on pace to be a fantasy starter, but tailed off late in the season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - There are reports that the veteran from Alabama will retire this offseason He is still under contract with the Lions for two more seasons. Bryant should never be relied upon as a fantasy starter. He is at best a depth player. Many expect the Lions to try to replace the veteran soon, maybe even as early as this offseason The defensive secondary was a weakness for the Detroit Lions in 2007.

Sidney Rice, WR, Minnesota Vikings (Week 5)

Accomplishments - The rookie caught 31 of 53 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns. To illustrate the big-play ability, Sidney Rice had four games with over fifty receiving yards. He was held back by poor quarterback play and will continue to progress as Jackson progresses. The former second rounder was the only playmaker from the receiver position.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Sidney Rice looks like he will soon become a star in the league. Rice is young and still is maturing. He turned 21 years old during the season and will continue to develop the longer he is a pro. The Vikings have little receiver talent or depth at the receiver position. They are grooming the former South Carolina Gamecock to be the franchise's WR1 for a long time. One issue for Rice's fantasy potential is the conservative, run-oriented play calling.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Sidney Rice has a great blend of speed and size. He is 6'4 and weight 202 pounds. Rice is fast and his athletic ability was displayed on a few long receptions in 2007. Sidney Rice's future looks bright. Any upgrade at the quarterback position will vault Sidney Rice into fantasy stardom. Also, Tarvaris Jackson played better late in the season. Any improvement will only help the rookie. With some improvement, Sidney Rice can become a legitimate fantasy WR1 in the next few years.

Josh Bullocks, FS, New Orleans Saints (Week 10)

Accomplishments - Bullocks finished third on the Saints in combined tackles with 77 and posted career best numbers: 65 solo tackles, 12 assists, 1 sack, 8 pass defenses, and 2 INTs. He finished 38th among fantasy DBs despite missing 2 games near the end of the season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Josh was on fire through the middle part of the season. In weeks 9 through 13 he posted 32 solo tackles, 5 assists, 3 pass defenses and an interception. He missed two games due to a quadriceps injury and posted minimal totals in the final two games where he was clearly not 100%.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Bullocks was cranking out the numbers during the middle part of the season and finally seemed to hit his stride around week 6. Were it not for the injury, he probably would have finished in the top 30 for fantasy DBs While he's not quite at the 'start every week' level, he's definitely a guy that you want on your roster.

Jason David, CB, New Orleans Saints (Week 11)

Accomplishments - David finished the season with 46 solo tackles, 4 assists, 1 INT and 2 pass defenses. He finished 89th as a fantasy DB, and started 9 of the last ten games for the Saints in 2007.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Entering week 11, David had just come off of two solid games as a starting DB in New Orleans and it looked like his season was about to take off. Although he started the rest of the way, he was inconsistent in his performance the rest of the season, scoring three points against Carolina and Tampa in week 12 and 13 respectively, yet also scoring 8.25 against Arizona in week 15 and 11 points against Chicago in his final game.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - David's up and down performance prevent him from really having any fantasy value as a DB. If he's going to be on your roster as a backup, follow his stats to see if he ever improves his performance. He has good 'big game' potential like he showed this season, but he needs to prove that he can bring it every week before you consider him a starter for your team.

Kevin Kolb, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 12)

Accomplishments - Kevin Kolb was drafted by the Eagles in round two of the 2007 NFL Draft and spent the entire year as no higher than the second QB on the depth chart. He was solidly behind both Donovan McNabb and A.J. Feeley all season, only seeing action in the blowout of Detroit in Week 3 (late in the fourth quarter).

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - The Eagles fans are hungry for a winner in Philadelphia, and many still wonder if McNabb can get the job done. The most popular guy on a football team is the backup QB, and that is where Kolb is entrenched now for the Eagles. McNabb has had major injuries and is now 31 (32 in November 2008) and commanding a big price tag after 2008.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The window of opportunity is closing on the current Eagles, and most recognize this fact. McNabb, Westbrook and the defense are not getting younger, so they must push for a championship in 2008 and see what happens after that. At QB, McNabb is affordable at $6.3M (after $5.5M base salary in 2007) but then has a club option at $9.2M in 2009. That means that if the Eagles think that Kolb is ready, he could get the reins in two seasons, especially if McNabb is on the outs with the franchise or if the Eagles begin a rebuilding phase.

A.J. Feeley, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 12)

Accomplishments - Feeley looked good at first when Donovan McNabb went down in Week 11 against Miami and then started the next week against the Patriots, but two costly picks against New England cost the Eagles the game. Even worse for Philly and Feeley was the Seattle game that followed, where Lofa Tatupu looked more like Brian Westbrook, as Feeley connected with him three times in a four interception horrendous performance.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - At the time, the Eagles offense looked like it needed an infusion of some kind of new blood. Once McNabb was hurt, the job fell to Feeley and with Westbrook, Kevin Curtis and others to catch passes it seemed like the Eagles QB might have some upside. Well, not if it was A.J. Feeley it seems.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Feeley could be back with the Eagles in 2008, as there are not a great deal of veteran QBs to back up someone like Donovan McNabb for a team hoping to push once again for an NFC Championship. Rookie Kevin Kolb probably is at least one more season away, so a veteran quarterback is needed in Philadelphia. Feeley comes cheap ($900K in 2008) and is signed through 2010 so he could be an Eagle next year, but as we said there are plenty of backup QB jobs open in the NFL for 2008. He should stick around for several more years if he wants to be a journeyman backup.

Correll Buckhalter, RB, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 5)

Accomplishments - "C-Buck" ran for 313 yards on 62 carries (a 5.0 YPC), totaling four touchdowns in 2007. He also added 12 catches for 87 yards as the understudy to Brian Westbrook. His biggest game came in Week 4 against the New York Giants, as he started for Westbrook and went for 103 yards on 17 carries and added four catches for another 35 yards.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Brian Westbrook is the Philadelphia Eagles offense, pure and simple. That said, even a stud RB takes some plays off and gets hurt now and then. Westbrook will not last forever, and his knees are always giving him issues. The highlight in Week 5 came at the right time as Buckhalter peaked with 138 yards against the Giants in Week 4, but he only topped 4 fantasy points in the Giants game and the four other contests where he found the end zone.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - As mentioned before, Buckhalter had nine games with less than four fantasy points in 2007. He is under contract with Philadelphia for cheap in 2008 ($1M), but that is his final year of the deal. His value skyrockets if Westbrook gets injured, but he will be turning 30 next season and that could mean the end is coming sooner rather than later. His value lies mostly in his backup role to Westbrook.

Jason Avant, WR, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 2)

Accomplishments - Avant finished the year with 267 yards and two touchdowns on 23 catches. The fourth round pick from Michigan moved up on the depth chart to the third option for the Eagles in his second season. Avant finished the year by catching 6 of 6 targets for 65 total yards in his last two games.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Avant started the year well, catching 8 of 9 targets for 109 yards and a score, including three catches, 54 yards and the touchdown against Green Bay in Week 1. Philadelphia loves to throw more often than not, and even the third option is a viable candidate in deeper leagues.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The Eagles started to jell just as the season came to a close. Donovan McNabb suffered a major knee injury last year and only looked like the McNabb of old in the second half of the year. As Philadelphia rights its offensive attack, a possession receiver will be needed to move the chains. Should no additions be made in the offseason (which might be unlikely) or if the Eagles move Kevin Curtis or Reggie Brown, Avant could see more action than expected. Another upside possibility is that Philly de-emphasizes the tight end position and lets L.J. Smith leave, opening up the offense to more four wide receiver sets. Currently, however, Avant is the third option at best and likely could be #4 by next September.

Hank Baskett, WR, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 11)

Accomplishments - Baskett came to Philadelphia in 2006 as an undrafted prospect from New Mexico State, and his size (6'4", 215 lbs.) has kept him on the squad as a big target. He put up backup stats for the 2007 season, catching 16 of 22 targets for 142 yards and one touchdown on the year.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Less than two weeks before the 2006 season, Baskett looked to be the deep sleeper as the #2 WR in Philadelphia for opening day. Shortly thereafter came the Donte Stallworth trade, and Baskett has been sliding down the depth chart ever since. Baskett was the third or fourth wideout next to Jason Avant the first half of 2007. He peaked midseason by catching six of seven targets including a score against Dallas in Week 9 - but that proved to be his only touchdown this season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Baskett was reduced to a blocking wideout and moved behind both Jason Avant and even Greg Lewis at times, so for a young receiver to be so far down the depth chart is troubling. The Eagles also have lots of room to get more talented receivers and improve the position overall, which means that Baskett could be in trouble just to make the team next year. If he continues to do the little things, his cheap price tag and his larger frame could keep him around, but the odds do not look good.

Brent Celek, TE, Philadelphia Eagles (Week 16)

Accomplishments - Celek was the fifth round pick for Philadelphia in 2007. The rookie tight end from Cincinnati was asked to take on a bigger role with the Eagles once L.J. Smith was lost for much of the season with injuries. Celek then became the starter for the last few weeks of the year as veteran Matt Schobel was also injured. Celek stepped up and played adequately for any tight end, especially a rookie, as he racked up 16 catches for 178 yards and a touchdown in his first season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - The Eagles and Andy Reid love to use the tight end in their version of the West Coast Offense, and Donovan McNabb has always liked to throw over the middle to a bigger target. L.J. Smith was a bigger loss for Philadelphia than many realize, as defenses could focus more on Westbrook and the wideouts in the passing game. If Smith leaves via free agency, Celek could build on his final three games where he put up solid numbers (11 targets, 8 catches, 103 yards and a touchdown) to become the starter for the Eagles in 2008.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - The best case scenario for an immediate impact would be for L.J. Smith to move on from Philadelphia and Brent Celek be named the starter for next year. That scenario is rather unlikely, however, as the Eagles need decent tight ends in their offensive scheme and tight end NFL talent is getting scarce. Recent news is that the Eagles may franchise tag Smith despite his injuries, but Philadelphia does not have many free agents to tag anyway for next year. Celek also just had surgery to repair a right labrum tear, so the rookie will also have to come back from that issue. Celek is a likely candidate for a sleeper tight end in 2008 and could easily contribute for the Eagles, but how Philadelphia deals with L.J. Smith will be crucial to determine Celek's 2008 value. If the Eagles go all the way through the NFL Draft without picking up a tight end in the first 3-4 rounds, the job could be Celek's to lose come training camp.

Shaun Hill, QB, San Francisco 49ers (Week 15)

Accomplishments - Of all the backup QBs to make an impact in 2007, none were more surprising than Shaun Hill. The undrafted free agent out of Maryland went from third string to starter over the course of the year, and actually led the team to two wins in the final three games of the season

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Hill had a very good first start vs. Minnesota, at least for a San Francisco QB. He followed through with strong play to end the season before getting back spasms that forced him to miss week 17.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Hill has to be one of the most intriguing QBs to watch in the offseason, as the 49ers are looking to sign him to a long term deal, and he might just end up spending time under the tutelage of Mike Martz, which can turn mere mortal QBs into fantasy studs. Hold him if you've got him.

Delanie Walker, TE, San Francisco 49ers (Week 4)

Accomplishments - Walker saw some action early in the year in place of an injured Vernon Davis, and then became a consistent secondary target for Shaun Hill later in the season. His sophomore campaign yielded 21 catches for 174 yards and a TD.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Walker was a very talented pass catcher at Central Missouri State, and had already shown potential in the preseason before getting hurt in 2006. Davis had just gone down to injury vs. Pittsburgh, and Walker was primed for short term value as a bye week or injury TE. He disappointed, but came on with the entrance of Hill.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - He's still an interesting TE/H-back project, but Walker didn't show the enough development in 2007 to get excited about his future. Walker could still hold value in the future if he comes on and gets to leave Vernon Davis' shadow, but for now he's only worth carrying in TE premium leagues and as a Davis handcuff.

Michael Lewis, SS, San Francisco 49ers (Week 11)

Accomplishments - Lewis recovered from being benched in 2006 by Philadelphia before being allowed to walk in free agency, and showed that the 49ers were wise to pay him like a starter by reestablishing the physical presence he provided to the Eagles in years past. He broke over 100 total tackles, and created big plays through multiple sacks, fumbles, and interceptions.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Lewis had shaken off some minor injuries, and he was seeing a lot of time on the field since he was playing defense for a team with an abysmal offense. He followed his dynasty watch appearance a with monster 12 tackle game that included a sack and forced fumble and ended up 10th among DBs (FBG Scoring).

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Lewis is in his prime at 27 and should be holding down the strong safety position for at least the next few years. He's a quality every week starter at the most inconsistent position in IDP leagues.

Aaron Stecker, RB, New Orleans Saints (Week 5)

Accomplishments - Aaron Stecker became a viable fantasy option this year when Deuce McAllister was lost for the season in week 3. When Reggie Bush went down in week 13, Stecker became the #1 back for the Saints. As the lone starter, he turned in 100 yards against the Falcons and 95 yards against the Cardinals in week 14 and 15. He suffered a turf toe injury in week 16 and missed the final game of the season. He ended the year with 151 touches for 659 yards and 5 TDs.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Stecker has been the main backup for the saints for the last four seasons. He is normally used on special teams, but saw a lot more action this season due to the injures at RB. He a free agent now and could end up as a fantasy backup if he moves to another team.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Stecker is entering his 9th NFL season, and he's not much of a threat to take over a starting job for anyone, no matter where he goes. He set career numbers this season from a fantasy prospective, but still only averaged 3.9 yards per carry. If he remains with the Saints, you definitely need to consider him as a backup since McAllister always seems to miss some time due to injury. Aside from that, he's a backup at best.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints (Week 8)

Accomplishments - Thomas didn't see much playing time until the final game of the season when Reggie Bush, Aaron Stecker and Deuce McAllister were all out with injuries. Thomas racked up 105 yards on 20 carries and posted another 121 yards on 12 receptions. He finished the year with over 400 yards from scrimmage on just 69 touches and had 2 TDs.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Thomas was always a possibility to play when McAllister was lost, and when Bush went down, Thomas' playing time increased significantly. He posted a very solid game against the Bears the final week of the season, and his 4.8 YPC were the highest on the team for players with more than 5 carries. With Stecker as a free agent, and McAllister a potential cap casualty, Thomas could be the #2 guy for the Saints next season.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - While he's not exactly a guy to trade Tom Brady for just yet, Thomas is an interesting prospect for 2008. The Saints are looking to give their offense a boost after a lackluster performance in 2007. Bush is a given, but if McAllister is traded or cut, Thomas could move into the #2 slot on the team. Keep an eye on him now, or grab him if you have the roster space and watch the off season for the Saints. You could find yourself with a nice prospect if the situation falls correctly.

Lance Moore, WR, New Orleans Saints (Week 4)

Accomplishments - Moore had a breakout season for the Saints this year, posting career best receiving numbers: 32 receptions for 302 yards and 2 TDs. He also had a rushing TD, and averaged 18.7 yards per kick return and 9.3 yards per punt return for the season.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Moore turned a nice performance against the Titans in week 3: six receptions for 54 yards. At the time, the Saints were struggling and it looked as if they were going to make some serious changes to their offense. Instead, Moore continued to be used in a few minor roles and never had more than three receptions in a game after that.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Moore is under contract with the Saints through the end of next season. Terrance Copper, Devery Henderson, and David Patten are all free agents at this point. Depending on who the Saints resign, Moore could move up on the depth chart or stay buried like he was for most of this season. Keep an eye on the Saints this off season and see how the situation plays out.

David Patten, WR, New Orleans Saints (Week 9)

Accomplishments - For a guy in his 11th season, Patten turned in a pretty respectable performance this year. Despite only starting five games for the Saints, he turned in 792 receiving yards and 3 TDs. He finished #3 on the Saints and receptions, and seconds in receiving yards and TDs. for the team. He was the 42nd WR from a fantasy prospective.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Patten had been turning in some pretty solid performances when week 9 rolled around, and he looked like a pretty good free agent option given who was available at the time. During the last four weeks of the season, Patten had 23 receptions for 287 yards and 2 TDs.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Patten is probably not worth having on your fantasy roster at this time. He's played 11 seasons and is currently a free agent. There's a chance he may never play football again. However, keep an eye on him to see if he stays in the NFL for next year. He was an excellent mentor to Marques Colston last year and the Saints could bring him back as a solid veteran presence for their young WR corps. Patten's fantasy numbers have been quite impressive given his age and recent performances, but he might be worth looking at if he stays with the Saints for 2008.

Brock Berlin, QB, St. Louis Rams (Week 15)

Accomplishments - Starting QB Marc Bulger and Gus Frerotte were both hurt week 14. The Rams turned to Berlin as their starter and he finished the game with 153 yards passing and 1 interception.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Berlin was an interesting prospect because he was a rookie on an offense where the QBs had serious health concerns. Frerotte is certainly not ever going to push Bulger for the starter's job, and Bulger has only one 16 game season for his career.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Berlin's 5.5 yards per pass attempt and 60.6 passer rating isn't going to make people forget about Tom Brady any time soon, but he is probably going to be the #2 guy in St. Louis next year. Does that mean you need to rush out and grab him? Nope. Not unless he shows something this off season. The Rams will probably bring in a few veterans to compete with him for the backup job or could even turn to the draft for another QB. Keep an eye on the situation, but at this point, Berlin is probably not worth a roster slot.

Antonio Pittman, RB, St. Louis Rams (Week 11)

Accomplishments - Hey! Isn't that the guy that the Saints drafted in the 4th round this year? Yep. The Saints waived Pittman earlier this season and St. Louis claimed him off of waivers back in September. He saw limited action during the second half of the season, but never cracked the starting lineup between Steven Jackson and Brian Leonard.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - Pittman had a pretty solid game in week 10 against his former teammates, posting 53 yards on seven carries. However, this turned out to be the highlight of his rookie season as he never carried the ball that many times again, and finished the year with just 38 carries for 139 yards (3.7 avg).

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Pittman is the odd man out in St. Louis. Leonard seems to be the guy that they turn to on the receiving side of the ball, and SJAX is clearly the go-to guy at RB for the Rams. That leaves Pittman to swipe a couple carries here and there, but never really emerge as a legitimate fantasy back. If he lands on another team, he would be worth keeping an eye on, but as a Ram, his upside is limited.

Brian Leonard, RB, St. Louis Rams (Week 4)

Accomplishments - Leonard was a second round pick for the Rams last season, and was probably on someone's roster when Steven Jackson got hurt in week three. Owners who drafted him saw a mixed performance while SJAX was out, including 59 yards on 17 touches against Dallas in week 4 and 135 yards on 23 touches the following week against Arizona.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - When Jackson went down in week 3, Leonard took over as the starter in St. Louis. But aside from his week 5 performance against Arizona, Leonard never averaged more than 3.7 yards per carry after that. When Jackson returned to the starting lineup, Leonard continued to post a catch or two a game but not much beyond that. He finished the season with less than 500 total yards and never scored a TD.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Steven Jackson didn't exactly rewrite the record books like he predicted he would in 2007, but he's still the go-to back for the Rams. At this point Leonard is just insurance against another Jackson injury, and probably is a good 'sell' candidate to the Steven Jackson owner in your league. He has a bit more value in PPR leagues since he will have 2-3 receptions per game, but unless SJAX is down with an injury, Leonard's value is pretty limited.

Marques Hagans, WR, St. Louis Rams (Week 7)

Accomplishments - Hagans saw action during the middle of the season in weeks 5, 6, and 7. He finished the year with 8 catches for 101 yards. His only start during that time was in week 6 where he posted 5 receptions for 74 yards. However, Isaac Bruce returned to the starting lineup in week 7 and Hagans disappeared after that. He saw some time in the week 14 game against Cincinnati, but had a fumbled kickoff and a muffed punt.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - For the one game that he started this season, Hagans put up some impressive numbers (5 catches for 74 yards). However, once Isaac Bruce returned to the starting lineup, Hagans returned to the bench and fumbled away his only opportunity in week 14.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Hagans is a guy to keep an eye on but not one that you want on your roster at this point. He's buried on the St. Louis depth chart and will probably stay there unless they do some serious house cleaning over the summer. As a starter he posted some solid numbers, but he'll have to become more consistent as a fantasy WR and stop putting the ball on the ground before you should consider having him on your roster.

Ronald Bartell, CB, St. Louis Rams (Week 15)

Accomplishments - Bartell finished the season as the 44th ranked fantasy DB with 63 solo tackles, 4 assists, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 9 pass defenses. Despite tapering off after a season high 24 fantasy points in week 14, Bartell proved that he should be considered a legitimate fantasy DB in 2008.

Dynasty Watch Reasons, then and now - In week 12, 13 and 14, Bartell posted 13.5, 15.5 and 24 fantasy points respectively. He had two other double digit point games during the season and looked to be on his way to fantastic season. He tapered off, posting just 21 fantasy points over the final three games but still performed much better than he did during the middle of the season, and proved that he can consistently score points as a fantasy DB.

Future prospects (2008 and beyond) - Bartell should begin the 2008 season as a starter for the Rams. He is entering a contract year as well, so you can expect that he'll be playing for a big extension. 2007 was his third season and he seemed to break out as a player this year. As a 16 game starter, Bartell has top 25 DB potential in most IDP leagues, making him a starter in most leagues and a solid backup at the bare minimum.
