*** Saturday Update ***
QB David Carr (CAR) will not start this weekend. HC John Fox said he didn't think Carr had progressed enough during the week, after sustaining a compression fracture in his lower back against New Orleans on Oct. 7. "It's not a season-long decision. It will be game to game," Fox said.
*** Saturday Update ***
QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) The Vikings won't announce a starting quarterback until Sunday morning, but signs still point to veteran Kelly Holcomb replacing the injured Tarvaris Jackson against Philadelphia. Jackson was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report with a broken index finger on his throwing hand. HC Brad Childress said Jackson will either start or be the emergency third quarterback against the Eagles, in which case Holcomb would be the starter. "I'm still debating, the old game-time decision," Childress said. "You just want to see how a guy keeps coming, keeps coming. I see him touch it a little bit better every day, and we'll just see if it will keep coming along." Jackson didn't have a splint on the finger when he walked off the practice field Friday, but when asked if his grip had gotten better he said only that the swelling had subsided. Earlier in the week, Jackson said the injury made it difficult to keep a tight spiral.
*** Saturday Update ***
QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) HC Lane Kiffin announced on Friday that Daunte Culpepper will get the start this Sunday. Josh McCown will back up Culpepper and JaMarcus Russell is third on the depth chart.

Running Back
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Jamal Lewis (CLE) admitted on Friday that he wasn't sure if his injured foot has healed enough to allow him to play this Sunday. "I'll know more on Sunday morning," he said. "I'll just play it by ear. I'll wake up on Sunday, and it might be killing me. I'll wake up on Sunday, and it might feel great. We'll see how it goes." He got in some limited practice this week and is listed as questionable. Jason Wright would start again if Lewis is out.
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Travis Henry (DEN) was in uniform for Saturday's practice, and he's hopeful he can still play against the Packers Monday night. He is still a rather large question mark unless a pain-killing injection he will take before the game gives him enough relief to play. "Better than I did yesterday and the day before," Henry said. "Game-time decision, you know. Go in Monday early and do what I got to do."
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX) missed a portion of Friday's practice and is listed as questionable with a sprained knee. Jones-Drew expects to play against the Bucs in spite of the injury.
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Frank Gore (SF) has been downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game vs, New Orleans. Still, HC Mike Nolan said he expects him to play. "I think he'll be ready," Nolan said. Gore also said he is confident he'll play with a right ankle sprain he sustained in the second quarter last week against the Giants. "I'll be good," he said.
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Chris Brown (TEN) was available for part of Friday's practice, working in a couple of drills to prepare for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. Brown, who missed last week's game against the Houston Texans with a sprained ankle, did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. "I got a little bit of work in," Brown said Friday. "Hopefully, it'll get better and better and be ready to roll. It's going to come down to how I work out before the game and what they think, but I feel like I should be able to go on Sunday."
Wide Receiver
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Marvin Harrison (IND) will not play this weekend as he will be out for the second time in the Colts' last three games, the team announced on Saturday.
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Drew Bennett (STL) pulled the thigh muscle in his left leg and missed the opening game this season. Still a bit gimpy, he caught just eight passes for 94 yards over the following five games before he injured his right hamstring Oct. 14 at Baltimore, forcing him to the sideline again last Sunday. "It was very frustrating," said Bennett. "But it's all good now. They're both gone. It's nice to be back on a good pair of legs. I don't even think about it when I'm running around now. I feel like I have my burst back."

*** Saturday Update ***
OL Philadelphia Eagles (PHI) RT Jon Runyan missed his third straight practice on Friday and is questionable to make his 185th consecutive start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Runyan bruised his tailbone in a training room fall last week, but played in Philadelphia's 19-16 loss to Chicago. He sat out practice this week and will be re-evaluated once the team arrives in Minnesota. "We have a long flight up there. We'll keep giving him treatment, and so on, to see how he does," Eagles HC Andy Reid said.
Defensive Line
*** Saturday Update ***
DL Chris Kelsay (BUF) did not practice again on Friday and is listed as questionable. Kelsay's consecutive start streak is now in jeopardy. He's played in every game in his five-year NFL career. He has 70 straight starts since the Bills made him a second-round pick in 2003. HC Dick Jauron said he'll be a game time decision. "He looked better today," said Jauron. "Watching him walk he didn't appear to have a limp. So we'll see where it goes." If he can't go DE Anthony Hargrove will replace him in the starting lineup.
*** Saturday Update ***
DL Richard Seymour (NE) joined practices for the first time this week and has been activated from the physically unable to perform list. Seymour is expected to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins. It is not yet known how much Seymour will play, but he probably will see at least 10-15 snaps.

*** Saturday Update ***
LB David Harris (NYJ) is expected to take Jonathan Vilma's spot in the starting lineup Sunday against Buffalo.
*** Saturday Update ***
LB Jonathan Vilma (NYJ) was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a knee injury, ending the one-time Pro Bowler's season after seven games. Vilma, who was hurt in New York's loss at Cincinnati last Sunday, missed practice all week and was listed as out on the team's injury report Friday. "I am disappointed that my season ended prematurely," Vilma said in a statement. "I was looking forward to playing the rest of the season and helping the team get back on track. I now look forward to supporting my teammates for the rest of the 2007 season and returning to the field with them in 2008."
Defensive Back
*** Saturday Update ***
DB Champ Bailey (DEN) Bailey, who suffered a bit of a setback mid-week in trying to return from a left thigh injury, was also on the practice field and participated fully. Bailey, who missed the game against the Steelers, said he hopes to play.

*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Kurt Warner (ARI) sat out Wednesday's practice, the only one of the teams bye week, but reported that his left elbow is feeling better. "It's going to take several weeks for scar tissue to form," Warner said, "And then the elbow will start getting stronger and more flexible."
QB Joey Harrington (ATL) will return as the Falcons starting quarterback for the next few weeks as Byron Leftwich's right ankle injury appears to be serious, but not severe enough to keep him out for the season. HC Bobby Petrino didn't divulge the nature of Leftwich's injury but said he hopes Leftwich will return this season.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Byron Leftwich (ATL) had surgery Tuesday to repair a severely sprained ankle and could be back with the team in as little as two weeks. Leftwich had two screws placed in his ankle, a procedure with a high rate of success.
QB Trent Edwards (BUF) The Bills have elected to give rookie Trent Edwards another start this week against the Jets in the Meadowlands.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB J.P. Losman (BUF) is obviously not happy about being benched in favor of Trent Edwards, but he is trying to stay positive through the situation. "Um, I have to be careful with my choice of words," Losman said. "All I can say is, right now, it's just a tough situation and I want it to sink a little bit, let my mind think a little bit, analyze the situation before I start making any kind of decision on what I think should happen, or what I thought should happen. I'm just going to ride this thing out and see how it plays. When my number's called, I'll be ready to go in there."
*** Friday Update ***
QB David Carr (CAR) practiced fully on Friday but will be the #2 QB behind Vinny Testaverde this week.
*** Thursday Update ***
QB David Carr (CAR) partially participated in Thursday's practice.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB David Carr (CAR) practiced fully on Wednesday. HC John Fox said that Carr will play Sunday against the Colts assuming he is healthy, but Fox did not go as so far as to say Carr would start.
QB David Carr (CAR) Vinny Testaverde seems to think that David Carr is still the starter, though there's been no definitive answer. When asked if he assumed Carr was the guy if he was now healthy, Testaverde replied: "I guess that's how I'm looking at it, but I don't know how the coaching staff looks at it...to me it doesn't matter because I'm preparing like I'm going to start the game anyway. That's how I've always done it." In talking about this week, Testaverde said: "Hopefully, Dave's back is fine and he'll be able to play. But whatever decision is made, I'm going to try and do my best, like I did last week, to help the team win a football game."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) will start this week over David Carr even though Carr was able to practice fully Thursday. "It's not an indictment on David Carr by any stretch. I don't feel he's 100%," coach John Fox said. "He's healthy enough to play, but I don't think he's 100%."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) is looking better but is still a game time decision.
Said coach Gary Kubiak after Friday's practice: "He (Matt Schaub) took all his reps today that he would normally take to get ready to play. I felt good about what he did today. As far as going and playing, I'm still going to say it's a game time decision because I want to see him do some more for me tomorrow, but he did do his normal work today."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) will be listed as day-to-day after X-rays on his injured hip were negative. Schaub has a bruise on his right hip. "I left Matt about an hour ago," HC Gary Kubiak said. "He's moving around very, very slowly. All the tests were negative. All the X-rays look fine. He's really just beat up."
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB David Garrard (JAX) will not play this weekend. Garrard will miss three or four weeks with a high ankle sprain.
QB David Garrard (JAX) could miss a few games after suffering an ankle sprain in the first half of last night's game against the Colts. "He's got a pretty good sprain on there, so I would think that in all likelihood, he'll be missing some time," HC Jack Del Rio said. Backup QB Quinn Gray replaced Garrard in the second half and was less than stellar, completing just nine of 24 passes for 56 yards. The team could look elsewhere for options. "In all likelihood, based on the initial prognosis, [we'll have to bring in another quarterback]," Del Rio said.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Quinn Gray (JAX) will start at Tampa this week in place of the injured David Garrard.
QB Cleo Lemon (MIA) HC Cam Cameron wasn't thrilled with starting Cleo Lemon's performance in Sunday's 49-28 loss to the Patriots, but he also made it clear that rookie John Beck won't be removing his headset on the sideline - yet. "It's still early in the year. Still, we're not even to the halfway point yet," Cameron said. "Cleo, I think, really regrouped himself at halftime, then we were moving the football. Obviously, he was doing well, and I didn't want to do anything there."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Kelly Holcomb (MIN) is expected to start over Tarvaris Jackson who has been struggling with a broken finger.

*** Thursday Update ***
QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) partially participated in Thursday's practice.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. Jackson did not attempt a pass during this morning's walk-through practice, and indications are as strong as ever that he will miss Sunday's game against Philadelphia. HC Brad Childress said Jackson will "go as able" in this afternoon's practice (but Jackson didn't practice). Jackson has an avulsion fracture in his right index finger, and Childress pointed out that finger is crucial for maintaining accuracy on passes. Childress also said the injury could inhibit Jackson's ability to take the center snap.
QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) has an avulsion fracture of the middle finger on his right hand, suffered midway through yesterday's 24-14 loss at Dallas. "The joint is sore, swollen and in a splint," HC Brad Childress said. Medical officials will evaluate it after a throwing session Tuesday before deciding Jackson's status for Sunday's game against Philadelphia. Asked if Jackson would start against the Eagles if his finger proves sound, Childress hedged. "Yeah, if he can do all the things he needs to be able to do physically and mentally," Childress said. Jackson, who will wear a splint on his fractured index finger at all times when not on the field, could not make basic throws Monday because of swelling. Childress is weighing the team's success versus the development of Jackson, who has struggled with and without injuries this season. "He needs to get those looks, but by the same token you don't want to sacrifice those wins and you want a guy that gives you the best chance to win." Backup QB Kelly Holcomb will start against his former team, the Eagles, if Jackson cannot play.

Culpepper has started the last three games for McCown, who suffered a broken left toe. Kiffin said he'll wait until he sees McCown practice before making a decision. "Like I said to (McCown), we'll figure it out once we see that," Kiffin said. "There's nothing to figure out right now because we're not practicing."

HC Mike Nolan and the 49ers haven't quite committed to that and likely will list Smith as probable later in the week. Smith said he was more confident than he was at this point last week. RB Tatum Bell (DET) has lost his starting job to RB Kevin Jones and now faces a further demotion for Sunday's game at Chicago against the Bears.HCh Rod Marinelli indicated strongly after practice Wednesday that Bell will not be active. Aveion Cason, a backup running back, is likely to return kickoffs and play on other special-teams units. That does not leave a spot for Bell on the 46-player active roster. T.J. Duckett is the primary backup to Jones. Cason fills the third spot at halfback on the depth chart. Jon Bradley is the fullback. Bell does not play on any special teams. "I'll let it play out as the week goes," Marinelli said. "Cason is a guy who can return kicks for us. He's not just a returner. He's a hard-core special teams guy."

Wynn returned to practice today after sitting out Tuesday because of neck spasms suffered while weight-lifting before Monday's practice. "We can all overreact to that," McCarthy said. "He's done a good job. I mean, he's been a professional, he's been on time, he's done all the things that have been asked from him as far as the weight room, you know, the training room and so forth."

How it will increase is unclear, but before taking questions in his news conference, Childress made a point to address his strategy of rotating Peterson with RB Chester Taylor. "We understand here that we have a great talent in Adrian Peterson," Childress said, "and we are trying to grow him just like we attempt to grow all of our young guys. RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) HC Mike Holmgren defended Shaun Alexander on Monday. "Shaun Alexander seems to be the lightning rod," Holmgren said. "I am here to tell you that there are times there is nothing there. There is nothing there. We are not blocking very well. So that must improve. Shaun has been a little unfairly criticized. We must improve how we're blocking -- assignment-wise, edges, technique, everything -- to give our guys a chance." However, Alexander on Sunday admitted that his broken left wrist is impacting his play. "Well, I can't do as many things," Alexander said Sunday when asked about the cast. "I can't carry the ball in my left hand. So that kind of changes my game up a little bit. But it's been like that since the first week, so I think I am just now getting used to playing with (the ball) in my right hand the whole time."

RB Frank Gore (SF) has been downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game vs, New Orleans. Still, HC Mike Nolan said he expects him to play. "I think he'll be ready," Nolan said. RB Frank Gore (SF) did not practice on Wednesday.
RB Frank Gore (SF) hurt his right ankle in the second quarter against the New York Giants but remained in the game after getting an additional tape job on the sideline. After the game, he was limping noticeably but pledged to play against New Orleans. "I'm looking forward to playing," he said. "I'll take it day by day. I'll see Wednesday or Thursday." Gore is "day to day" with a right ankle sprain, according to HC Mile Nolan.
Also, Gore let his frustrating show when he wondering aloud whether his teammates trust the play-calling of first-year offensive coordinator Jim Hostler. "Norv Turner, he's been doing it for a while," said Gore who had a career year under Turner a year ago. "Whenever he said something, we wanted to do it. Now I feel that a lot of people, when coach Hoss calls something, it gets in the back of their heads, 'Is he calling the right play?'" A day later, HC Mike Nolan tried to downplay the deeper meaning of Gore's concerns in the wake of a mistake-filled 33-15 road loss to the New York Giants. "If we were winning games, I don't believe that comment would necessarily be made," Nolan said. "I also know that Frank is frustrated by the production, or lack of, in the offense.
*** Friday Update ***
RB Steven Jackson (STL) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to start this weekend although he likely won't carry his normal workload.
"It wouldn't be normal," said Rams head coach Scott Linehan of Jackson's work load. "It will be modified from his normal (workload). It depends on how he feels, but it won't be every play of the game."
*** Thursday Update ***
RB Steven Jackson (STL) practiced fully on Thursday. While it appears Jackson is set to return this week against the Browns, it is unknown officially if he will start and/or how much playing time he will get. The only hint of him being completely back was this qualifier by HC Scott Linehan. "We'll be guarded somewhat as we go," coach Scott Linehan said, "but if we get through this week of practice, there's no reason he shouldn't be starting this week." Jackson added, "A groin is something that, it feels good and the next day it may have a little tweak here or there," he explained.

Brown, who missed last week's game against the Houston Texans with a sprained ankle, did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. "I got a little bit of work in," Brown said Friday. Little will visit Dr. Robert Anderson, one of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country next week. Little must decide if he wants the sugery done now, or after the season. DL Victor Adeyanju will start in place of Little against the Browns.
*** Wednesday Update ***
DL Leonard Little (STL) did not practice on Wednesday. Little won't be able to play this week because of a torn toe ligament. He will see a foot specialist during the Rams' bye week and Rams HC Scott Linehan said it was "50-50" whether Little would need surgical repairs during the season.
DL Leonard Little (STL) will undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his injured toe. When the surgery will take place remains to be seen as it depends on how well Little can handle the pain. He can choose to have it soon, which could jeopardize his season, or wait until the end of the year. "He's going to have to surgery on it. Whether it's soon or at the end of the year depends on how well it holds up," DC Jim Haslett said. HC Scott Linehan didn't rule Little out for Week 8 just yet.
