*** Saturday Update ***
RB Jerious Norwood (ATL) Falcons' offensive coaches have been trying to figure out how to unleash Jerious Norwood. "He's shown that he's able to make big plays for us," HC Bobby Petrino said. "We have to give him more opportunities and more touches. I think we're still waiting for him to have that breakout game. I think it's just the number of touches. He needs more touches."
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Travis Henry (DEN) With Travis Henry facing the potential of a yearlong suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy, both he and the Broncos have now put his fate in the hands of the legal system in a battle over the league's testing procedures. "It's funny how a lot of things get blown out of proportion before everybody knows what happened," Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker said. "The people will see and he'll be with us the whole year and try to finish this thing strong. People out there don't know everything he knows. It's funny how they put out the worst first instead of the good. We already know what the situation is, and that will be put out at a later date and everybody will understand." Henry, who is in a legal dispute with the NFL about a positive drug test, said Friday he was advised by his attorney not to comment on anything other than football matters. HC Mike Shanahan, too, said he would not comment on the specifics of either Henry's legal battle or the potential for a suspension.
Henry met with Shanahan Thursday night at Shanahan's home. "I don't want to discuss it," Henry said of the meeting. "The NFL told me not to discuss nothing. And what I discussed with him, it's personal." "I talked to Travis last night when I got home from work, he was over at my house," Shanahan said. "I talked to him for a half-hour, an hour, somewhere in that area. I can't go into any detail because of the NFL policy. Sometime I will go into detail what the conversation was about, give you a little bit more insight."
Shanahan said if Henry's right ankle and right knee allow him to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, he will be in uniform and in the lineup for the game. Henry practiced with the team Friday. "I'm going to play Sunday," Henry said.
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) is ready to play, but he's also ready to share carries with Derrick Ward. "Just look around the league," Jacobs said this week. "Every team has two backs. D-Ward is a very good back. We're going to utilize both of us when things are right. (The coaches) see that D-Ward is capable of being very productive. They know that I can go out and do the same thing. Why waste talent? Why waste the talent we have?"
*** Saturday Update ***
RB Najeh Davenport (PIT) Police have questioned Najeh Davenport about his involvement in a domestic dispute involving the mother of his 5 year old child. Allegations of domestic violence were made involving Davenport in three 911 calls, police Lt. Thomas Stacho said. City prosecutors will review the findings to determine if charges will be filed.
Wide Receiver
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Anquan Boldin (ARI) is listed as doubtful. Boldin did not practice all week and could be a game-time decision. "I think it's more about how he feels," Whisenhunt said. "But you don't ever want to say a guy like that's not going to play. He's too tough that you can't just say he's out."
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Steve Smith (CAR) injured his leg toward the end of Friday's practice, but HC John Fox doesn't believe it is serious. "It was one play and he was limited," Fox said. "But we think he's fine." Smith was seen walking back to the locker room and didn't appear to be limping.
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Javon Walker (DEN) said he will be back on the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 21. "Yes, that's the game I'll be back," Walker said Friday. HC Mike Shanahan determined that Walker, the team's No. 1 receiver, will not play against the visiting San Diego Chargers today because of a lingering knee problem. Walker didn't play at Indianapolis. Shanahan said Friday when Walker didn't practice for the third straight day that he wouldn't play. Brandon Stokley, the team's No. 3 receiver, will start in Walker's place for the second straight game.
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Calvin Johnson (DET) practiced all week and is expected to play Sunday against the Redskins. "It's feeling pretty good," Johnson said of his back on Friday. Johnson is listed as questionable.
*** Saturday Update ***
WR David Givens (TEN) is still rehabbing from a left knee injury suffered last November and it doesn't appear he'll be back this season. Givens is rehabbing at the clinic of Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. Givens is eligible to be taken off the PUP list later this fall, but it's becoming likely that his return target will be next year's training camp.
*** Saturday Update ***
WR Santana Moss (WAS) There was a bounce in Santana Moss' step yesterday. "I feel great," the Washington Redskins' No. 1 receiver said yesterday after he missed practice again but ran routes for the first time since he strained a groin on Sept. 23 against the New York Giants. "I ran pretty good. That's all I wanted. I did what I had to do today. I ran some routes [without coverage]. That's a different kind of route [than if] someone's pulling on you. But the speed I ran it at and putting your foot in the ground and planting, everything was great." HC Joe Gibbs was not nearly as optimistic, terming Moss doubtful and reiterating twice that he hadn't practiced. "It might be a situation where he warms up before the game [and plays] and it might not," Gibbs said.
Tight End
*** Saturday Update ***
TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) talked Friday about whether he can ever return to the glory of his first five seasons in which he averaged nearly 63 receptions and five TDs. "Obviously, I'm not 21 years old anymore," said Shockey. "A bunch of things have changed, a bunch of elements, a bunch of pieces in the puzzle have gone elsewhere. It's just different. It's not the same as it was and it's never going to be."
*** Saturday Update ***
TE Vernon Davis (SF) is walking a lot better, and there appears to be a decent chance that he'll be able to play October 21 when they face the Giants.

*** Saturday Update ***
OL Jacksonville Jaguars (JAX) LT Khalif Barnes suffered an ankle injury against the Broncos two weeks ago and said Friday that he's not sure whether he'll start against the Chiefs or not. If Barnes is unable to play, the Jags will turn to Mo Williams.
*** Saturday Update ***
OL Kansas City Chiefs (KC) RT Kyle Turley missed practice again on Friday because of an injured ankle and was declared out for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. T Chris Terry will start.
*** Saturday Update ***
OL St. Louis Rams (STL) G Adam Goldberg, who suffered a torn ligament in his left knee last Sunday, will join fellow OL Orlando Pace and Mark Setterstrom on IR.
Defensive Line
*** Saturday Update ***
DL Rodrique Wright (MIA) said his shoulder is finally healed after having surgery 17 months ago, and will take the brace off Sunday as he gets ready to make his first NFL start this Sunday.
*** Saturday Update ***
DL Osi Umenyiora (NYG) missed his second straight practice Friday with a sore left knee. Umenyiora said he still expects to play against the Jets on Sunday. "Right now, I think he has made good progress, he is better than he was yesterday," Giants HC Tom Coughlin said Friday. "So we are very hopeful."

*** Saturday Update ***
TM Indianapolis Colts (IND) HC Tony Dungy didn't offer much hope that their injured players status would change for Sunday's game with the Buccaneers. "I would say it's unlikely many of them will play," Dungy said. If there's any question regarding a player's health, the team likely will err on the side of caution. If they're really ready to go, if they feel good mentally, (they) will go," Dungy said. "But the other guys have practiced all week and if there's any doubt, we'll go with the guys who have practiced."

*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Matt Leinart (ARI) The Cardinals have been working with Matt Leinart on his confidence, telling him to let go of any reservations about a pass and to just let it fly. The feeling was that Leinart was relying on too many touch passes rather than getting the ball to the target quickly. Evidence suggests he's warming up to himself when he fired a pass to WR Bryant Johnson on an out pattern, which led to a Cardinals touchdown. "I just think I kind of came out with the attitude of rear back, let it go with no worries," Leinart said. "Last week I kind of focused on that, really following through, really putting some extra stuff on it."
QB Matt Leinart (ARI) HC Ken Whisenhunt talked this morning about his quarterback situation and reiterated what he has said all along -- that it is working, and Matt Leinart is the starter, and it will remain there as he is evaluated week-by-week. Whisenhunt was also asked about Leinart's comments to Yahoo! Sports which portray his frustration. Whisenhunt said he doesn't mind Leinart letting people know up to a point. Meanwhile, Leinart said his comments were taken out of context and then said he was misquoted all together regarding his frustrations with the dual quarterback strategy Whisenhunt has employed. Leinart played the first and fourth quarters, while backup QB Kurt Warner played most of the middle two quarters in a 21-14 win over Pittsburgh. Leinart was quoted as saying, "I just want them to ride or die with me. If I'm the franchise quarterback, play me and let me stumble, because I'll fight through it, and that will help me and our team in the long run. - I know coaches want to win now, and I guess they have their reasons. But I don't understand it, and this switching back and forth is almost worse than getting benched." Leinart later admitted that he's going through a tough challenge, but tried to put out the fire Monday by saying, "None of that was said. I don't really recall ever saying any of those things to anyone."

QB Trent Edwards (BUF) will make his second straight start when Buffalo hosts the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. HC Dick Jauron ruled J.P. Losman out, saying the quarterback is recovering steadily from a sprained left knee but it's not clear when he'll be able to resume practicing with the team.

QB J.P. Losman (BUF) did not practice on Wednesday.
QB J.P. Losman (BUF) In the wake of Trent Edwards' performance in Buffalo's 17-14 win Sunday, J.P. Losman was asked if he's worried about his starting job. "Of course," said Losman, who is still recovering for a sprained MCL. "In this league I've seen everything possible pretty much just in my short time here in Buffalo. But when a player goes (out) with an injury you want to get back in there as soon as possible. It's every player's fear to get injured and to have some kind of controversy over something like that. As far as this league goes I don't think anyone's job on this team is secure. You're going to have to perform week in and week out." HC Dick Jauron didn't definitively state that Edwards would start Monday night against the Cowboys, but sounds as though he's leaning in the rookie's direction. "I think it probably makes sense," said Jauron.

QB Brian Griese (CHI) HC Lovie Smith confirmed on Monday that Brian Griese will start the team's Week 5 game.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) underwent an MRI exam on his bruised thigh on Monday. The injury is not considered to be serious. "I just have a little thigh bruise," Schaub said. "The doctors are just going to take a look at it. We're not concerned about it. We just want to make sure everything is OK."
QB Matt Schaub (HOU) has a thigh bruise suffered in the game Sunday but the team doesn't think it's anything to worry about. Said coach Gary Kubiak, "Matt's got a thigh bruise but he should be fine."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Trent Green (MIA) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.
QB Trent Green (MIA) HC Cam Cameron gave Trent Green his vote of confidence Monday even though Green is tied with Saints' QB Drew Brees with a league-high seven interceptions. QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) Despite leading the Raiders to five touchdowns, it is unknown yet whether or not Daunte Culpepper will remain the starter for the team's next game against San Diego in two weeks. HC Lane Kiffin did say that if he had to choose today, it would still be Culpepper over Josh McCown, who is still wearing a protective boot around his sprained foot. "If we played tomorrow, he'd start," Kiffin said, but, "I'm not going into the San Diego game yet; that's the only reason. If I was, then I'd made that decision. But I don't need to make it."
*** Friday Update ***
QB Josh McCown (OAK) took off his protective boot Thursday, but admitted that he still has a long way to go in order to be ready to play. "I'll need a couple of full days, at least," he said, "because I'm in a new situation." McCown has a broken big toe, a sprained foot, and a chipped bone in his right index finger.

QB Alex Smith (SF) will not play this weekend.
*** Thursday Update ***
QB Alex Smith (SF) will not play this weekend. However, Smith will not need surgery on his injured shoulder. Dr. James Andrews confirmed what team doctors diagnosed as a moderate shoulder separation on Smith's throwing arm. An ESPN report had earlier stated that Smith could require season ending surgery to repair torn tendons. "Anything you've heard about Alex is incorrect. So, no need to waste your breath on it," HC Mike Nolan said of the faulty rumors.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Alex Smith (SF) The 49ers dismissed an ESPN report that Alex Smith was considering shoulder surgery. The report said that Smith could opt for season-ending surgery if Dr. James Andrews confirmed the team's initial medical report. But the 49ers say that the team only sent lab results to Andrews, that there is no appointment scheduled and that the injury is two torn ligaments, not tendons as the report indicated. Smith said and MRI examination revealed no other problems with the shoulder. There was no damage to the muscle fibers or to the collarbone and that the team would assess his return after the swelling subsided.
QB Alex Smith (SF) HC Mike Nolan said today that Alex Smith's right shoulder separation won't require surgery and Smith could return as early as Oct. 21 against the Giants. An MRI revealed a third-degree separation of his passing shoulder. Nolan said doctors assign six grades of varying severity in categorizing a shoulder separation and Smith's was in the mid-range. He added that Smith's possible return for the Giants game was a best-case scenario. "It's potential," Nolan said. "I know that's what Alex is saying." Furthermore, Nolan also said team doctors might be able to get a better read on how long Smith will be sidelined by Thursday, when the swelling in his shoulder is expected to decrease.

QB Marc Bulger (STL) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Marc Bulger (STL) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. However, in a reversal of his comments earlier in the week, HC Scott Linehan has decided to sit injured Marc Bulger this week in favor of veteran Gus Frerotte.
QB Marc Bulger (STL) HC Scott Linehan said that he will continue to play Marc Bulger, despite the QB playing well below expectations and doing so with broken ribs while behind a patched up offensive line. "The decision (to play Bulger) was made based on whether he was capable of doing his job. Last year, he played with a very similar injury, and played his best football. He's our quarterback," Linehan said. Backup QB Gus Frerotte played in the second half of a blowout loss to the Cowboys.
*** Wednesday Update ***
QB Gus Frerotte (STL) In a reversal of his comments earlier in the week, HC Scott Linehan has decided to sit injured QB Marc Bulger this week in favor of veteran Gus Frerotte, who was working with the first unit Wednesday in practice. Linehan also announced that he will take over the play calling from OC Greg Olson. Linehan was the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins when Frerotte started 15 games in Miami.

After Ernie Sims forced the ball loose from Benson's grip on a second-quarter carry, Benson sat out the remaining 11 minutes of the first half as OC Ron Turner inserted rookie Garrett Wolfe with the No. 1 offense for the next two series. "Obviously, he's got to hold on to the ball," Turner said, quickly adding he had planned to get Wolfe some playing time.

*** Friday Update ***
RB Travis Henry (DEN) partially participated in Friday's practice and is listed as questionable. Although Henry's expected to start. Backup RB Selvin Young could get a few more carries as the team tries to keep Henry fresh. But the feeling seems to be that Henry will be ready to go. "It's looking like Travis is moving around pretty well, though," Young said on Thursday. Henry hasn't practiced this week because of ankle and knee injuries he suffered at Indianapolis on Sunday.
Henry's NFL future is in legal limbo in New York. According to the NFL Network's Adam Schefter, even if Henry is suspended by the league, the process could take several weeks before a final decision is reached regarding Henry's playing status as there would most certainly be an appeal of any suspension.
*** Thursday Update ***
RB Travis Henry (DEN) Fox 31 News in Denver reports that Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana use and could be subject to a one-year suspension. Henry, 28, previously served a four-game suspension from the National Football League for violating the leagues substance abuse policy in September 2005 as a member of the Tennessee Titans. In related news, Henry is involved in a lawsuit to keep the NFL from using the results of a drug test to suspend him, according to court papers filed in Brooklyn federal court. On Sept. 20, Henry attempted to get a restraining order in Suffolk County Supreme Court to block the NFL from using a urine specimen against him and to stop the league from disclosing the test results. Henry claims that the NFL violated league substance abuse policy by not allowing his experts to be present for testing of his urine specimen, court papers stated.
*** Wednesday Update ***
RB Travis Henry (DEN) had a magnetic resonance imaging test on his injured right leg, but no damage was found to the knee or ankle. Still, the team held him out of practice today and HC Mike Shanahan said he didn't know whether Henry would practice Thursday.
RB Travis Henry (DEN) thought his season was over Sunday when he injured his ankle against the Colts. "I was worried," Henry said as he walked with a pronounced limp from the visitor's locker room at the RCA Dome to the team bus. "I felt sharp pain in my knee, first. Then my knee and my ankle. But the X-ray came back negative, so that's a blessing. I think I'll play. I know my body, and I think things will settle down in a couple days and I'll be able to get back in there."

Jackson missed his second day of practice on Thursday and didn't play at all in Week 4. When asked about how Jackson is progressing, Green Bay Packers HC Mike McCarthy said the following; "Well they actually tested him today. They went through the rehab test today, and frankly I haven't received the results yet. They wanted to push him through and see where he was. RB Joseph Addai (IND) is dealing with a shoulder injury from last week. More will be known about his status for Week 5 later this week. There has been somewhat conflicting information from the team on Addia with some reports that he'll be OK to play but others saying he might not be available. We'll know more soon.
*** Thursday Update ***
RB Larry Johnson (KC) missed Wednesday's practice but that's likely something we'll continue to see. Said coach Herm Edwards, "We've got the Curtis Martin Wednesday ... the Curtis Martin rules," referring to how Curtis Martin used to take off Wednesday's just to keep him rested.
RB Ricky Williams (MIA) applied for NFL reinstatement Monday, his agent said. Williams is under contract with Miami. But new HC Cam Cameron has not indicated whether he wants Williams to stay with the team. "Ricky is extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the NFL again," Leigh Steinberg said. Williams' current suspension began in April 2006 after he violated the league's drug policy for the fourth time. He tested positive for marijuana this April, again delaying his return.
RB Adrian Peterson (MIN) HC Brad Childress was asked Monday about the fact that Adrian Peterson had only two rushing attempts in the second half of Sunday's loss to Green Bay after rushing for 108 yards in the first half. "I'm not so keen on that as him being a good teammate and contributing in whatever way he can like in those kickoff returns," Childress said. "That takes its toll, too. The 52-yard kickoff return, I know he kneeled down with a bunch of them, but we're going to continue to mix those guys in and out. That's not something that we run in and look at the statistics and say, 'Geez, he's got a 100.' We're going to continue to change those guys up and put those fresh legs in there from time to time. Whether it's Chester [Taylor's] fresh legs or whether it's Adrian's fresh legs."
RB Chester Taylor (MIN) is the subject of trade rumors according to the Tampa Tribune. The paper is reporting that that Tampa is trying to make a trade for Chester Taylor and offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie. It's feasible the Vikings might deal Taylor given how well rookie Adrian Peterson is playing but McKinnie seems to be a different story.

RB Reggie Bush (NO) HC Sean Payton said Reggie Bush will get the bulk of the carries this week against the Panthers now that Deuce McAllister is out for the year. Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas will spell Bush. "I think Stecker will be involved and Pierre Thomas will be involved, but you'll see Reggie get more handoffs (and be part of the offense) more than he's been as a ball carrier," Payton said, "We'll still have to monitor how many runs, but you'll see him more from the running back position."

RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) practiced fully on Wednesday. He is ready to return to his starting job one month after spraining his right knee in the season opener. RB Derrick Ward has played so well filling in for him however that HC Tom Coughlin has to decide how to split the work. Coughlin refused to say whether Jacobs would start against the Jets (1-3) on Sunday. He intends to wait until the end of the week before making a decision who starts and how much time each player gets. "Obviously there are plays that they would run which would be the same, but there are different reasons for using them and you would like to be able to utilize their talent," Coughlin said.

"I'm not practicing him," McCarthy said. "He's practicing Friday. I made the mistake last week of practicing him on Wednesday and his hamstring fatigued. That's what we're evaluating right now."

He's very competitive, very, very competitive and the more he plays the more confidence he's gaining as a football player. But I just think that every week he shows you a little something different. He brings electricity when he plays, that joy. He always wants the ball."

But the speed I ran it at and putting your foot in the ground and planting, everything was great." TE Jerramy Stevens (TB) was sentenced to 12 days in jail and received $3,160 in fines today after his drunk-driving conviction last month in Scottsdale, Arizona. However Stevens won't miss any action on the field -- at least not yet. Facing 30 days in jail, he had his sentence immediately stayed by Judge B. Monte Morgan pending the outcome of an appeal by Stevens' attorney. The attorney, James Nesci, told the Times recently that he planned to appeal the conviction, adding that the future legal wrangling likely means there won't be an outcome until after the football season. That should allow Stevens to stay on the field and serve any jail time in the offseason, Nesci said.
TE Chris Cooley (WAS) has been asked to contribute more to the passing game by blocking and in turn his numbers have taken a hit this season. The team is trying to compensate for injuries on the line and Cooley has been pitching in. "He understands the situation; we've had a lot of lineman hurt," QB Jason Campbell said. "Right now, we have to use him to block more. But we understand the best thing he does for this team is route running and making catches for us. His time is going to come." Cooley has just six receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown this season.
