Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Travis Henry (DEN) was asked this week how many rushing yards he'll have at season's end. 1,500 yards? "Higher," Henry said. "I think 1,500 is low for my goal. Henry is the NFL's leading rusher through two games with 267 yards. "I ain't never going to be satisfied," said Henry. "Once you get satisfied, that's when they'll bring somebody else in here to replace you. That's why I always feel like I can get better."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) will continue to wear a cast over his left wrist against the Bengals. "I'm feeling a lot better," Alexander said. "It has been a good, healthy week for me."

"He took a helmet right above the knee, and it was sore overnight," agent Al Irby said. "He had an MRI, and it confirmed that it was just a bruise, nothing long-term. Darwin told me it wasn't anything to worry about."

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Manny Lawson (SF) The 49ers put Manny Lawson on IR Friday, ending the linebacker's season two days after he tore his ACL in his left knee. San Francisco replaced Lawson on its 53-man roster by signing FB Zak Keasey from the practice squad.

Quarterback

*** Thursday Update *** QB Joey Harrington (ATL) had thoughts on the addition of QB Byron Leftwich: "I don't worry about the things that are out of my control," Harrington said Wednesday after practice. "The things I control are how I prepare and how I go out and play. It's not something that I haven't given a second thought to, but it's not something that distracts me from what I have to do. We have to win games."

QB Byron Leftwich (ATL) has landed in Atlanta. The NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that Leftwich and the Falcons agreed to terms on a two-year deal. Joey Harrington has hung in there but he's obviously struggling as the Falcons QB. Coach Bobby Petrino said Monday that Harrington is holding the ball too long and showing a lack of confidence in his play.

"I think right now Joey is playing a little bit conservative, a little bit not to throw the interception," Petrino said. "Therefore it is causing him to hold the ball. He just needs to open it up more with confidence and play to go win the game."

Translated through the coach speak decoder that means if Harrington continues to take sacks like this, we'll be seeing Leftwich soon.

*** Friday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) is listed as Probable and is expected to start. "Steve seems to have gotten through the week OK, so hopefully it will show up that way on Sunday," Ravens coach Brian Billick said Friday. "It was just a matter of how he felt.

"He felt pretty good, so that was the key."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) practiced fully on Thursday.

QB Steve McNair (BAL) is expected back in practice Wednesday and the team is hopeful he'll be ready to go Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Rex Grossman (CHI) says the team's slow start is in part due to the pressure he's been putting on himself. "In the second half [against Kansas City], things just weren't coming open easy," Grossman said, "And I was pressing to try to still make sure you're conservative and still making plays. That combination may have misguided some of my reads in just trying not to make a mistake. Then you make a mistake." Grossman, who has one TD pass, three interceptions and has been sacked six times, said he plans to smarten up and calm down.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jon Kitna (DET) is practicing fully and is not showing any effects of his concussion from Sunday. He'll start as normal this Sunday.

QB Jon Kitna (DET) appeared to be fine Monday according to coach Rod Marinelli. Kitna suffered what's being called a mild concussion. Marinelli said Kitna did not show any symptoms of a concussion or have a lingering headache.

QB Damon Huard (KC) HC Herm Edwards confirmed on Monday that quarterback Damon Huard would remain as the team's starter in Week 3.

*** Friday Update *** QB Trent Green (MIA) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Kelly Holcomb (MIN) is the favorite to get the start Sunday. Coach Brad Childress says he won't reveal his starting QB until game time but Holcomb took all of the meaningful snaps this week in practice according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) is listed as doubtful with a groin injury and it doesn't look like he'll play. The team will have to decide between Brooks Bollinger and Kelly Holcomb. Many feel Holcomb will be the starter but coach Brad Childress says he'll not reveal his starter at game time. Holcomb took all of the meaningful snaps this week in practice according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) was on the practice field Thursday, but he did not do any work with his teammates during the portion of drills the media is allowed to watch. Rather, Jackson did do some footwork drills. HC Brad Childress has not said whether Kelly Holcomb or Brooks Bollinger would start if Jackson can't go. "For me it's just a competitive disadvantage to declare a guy today," said Childress, who likely won't officially name a starter until Friday. "I hate to be evasive but I'm evasive." However, sources close to the team said Holcomb received most of the first-team work in Wednesday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) did not practice on Wednesday.

QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) Should Tarvaris Jackson not be able to play this Sunday (due to a groin injury) against the Chiefs, No. 3 quarterback Kelley Holcomb could jump up to No. 1 status in less than a week. Jackson suffered a groin injury last Sunday versus the Lions, and was less than effective throwing four interceptions. HC Brad Childress maintained that if healthy, Jackson would start this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced fully on Friday and will start as normal this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jared Lorenzen (NYG) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Jared Lorenzen (NYG) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) is listed as Questionable but most feel he'll be the starter Sunday.

"He's continuing along the path that we have," coach Eric Mangini said Friday. "I'm comfortable with his progress throughout the course of the week. It's a plan that we've put in place and a plan that we've worked out with him and with the doctors. We'll keep following that through today and through the weekend and evaluate it each step of the way."

Pennington practiced well this week and put full weight on his ankle without problems.

"With any injury situation, you have to go through the whole week," Mangini said. "I've been part of decisions where it looks really good going into game day and you do a pre-game workout and it's not exactly what you expected. Or vice versa, you didn't look as good, you work out pre-game and it looks great. You have to go through the whole process before you make that final decision."

Bottom line is he's expected to start but it'll still likely be game time before we know for certain.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) practiced again on his sprained right ankle today, moving around with an ever-so-slight limp. He was working with the first team. Asked how Pennington did in Wednesday's practice, HC Eric Mangini said, "I thought he looked good in the reps that he had. He moved pretty well ... He started with the first team and took the amount that we had allocated for him. Then Kellen (Clemens) got the majority of the next block, and Tui (Marques Tuiasosopo) got some."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) officially partially participated in Wednesday's practice. "My goal is to be available," Pennington said Wednesday. "I'm going to prepare just like I always prepare and work just as hard as I always have worked. Nothing has changed for me as far as my mind-set and my focus and what I'm trying to do. That's my job as a player and my goal. I'll leave the decision up to coach." Although he was listed as limited in practice on the injury report Wednesday, Pennington looked close to normal during the half-hour window the media are allowed to witness. The limp that was extremely noticeable a week ago was barely there. Pennington also dropped back and put his full weight on his right ankle during passing drills. "I worked and prepared extremely hard on an injury that normally takes some time," Pennington said. "It's still a process, something that you have to go through and work through all those things. My goal was to be available on Sunday and I was available. I left it up to coach to make that decision."

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) will remain the starter as long as he's healthy according to coach Eric Mangini.

"Chad's the starter and I'm the backup. That's been clearly communicated," Clemens said Monday. "Whoever's healthy and ready to go will go on Sunday and we trust the coaches to put us in the best position to hopefully get that first victory."

"If he can, he will (start)," coach Eric Mangini said. "We'll just assess it throughout the week, but if he's able to, he will."

*** Friday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) practiced Friday and is listed as Probable with his foot injury. He's expected to start although he'll likely be on a short leash and we could see Daunte Culpepper.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) HC Lane Kiffin said today that Josh McCown will start ahead of Daunte Culpepper on Sunday when the Raiders take on the Browns. He did clarified that comment by say "You could see them both in the game." He also intimated that it's possible No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell could still start this season despite missing all of camp in a holdout. "We're going to push JaMarcus as hard as we can and see how far he can take it," Kiffin said.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

QB Josh McCown (OAK) HC Lane Kiffin will stick with Josh McCown as the starter despite his five interceptions and five fumbles (one lost) as well as several miscues after two games. McCown threw for just 73 yards in Sunday's game against the Broncos and missed a wide open WR Jerry Porter for the potential game-winning touchdown. McCown is also fighting through two injuries, a sprained right foot and a cracked index finger on his throwing hand. Nevertheless, Kiffin is giving McCown the nod when the Raiders host Cleveland this Sunday. "Right now I feel he puts us in a better position to win," Kiffin said. "Will that be the case next Monday? I don't know."

*** Friday Update *** QB A.J. Feeley (PHI) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

Henry is the NFL's leading rusher through two games with 267 yards. "I ain't never going to be satisfied," said Henry. "Once you get satisfied, that's when they'll bring somebody else in here to replace you. That's why I always feel like I can get better."

RB Travis Henry (DEN) sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter of the team's Week 2 game. He later returned to the game. The injury is not considered to be serious. "It's good. I just tweaked it," Henry said. "I knew I had to suck it up and get back in there and help us get the win."

*** Friday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) was listed as OUT today on the injury report for the game against Philadelphia.

*** Thursday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) did not practice on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) did not practice on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) was fine today after a hard practice Thursday. He's listed as Questionable on the injury report but coach Rod Marinelli sounded guardedly optimistic he could play.

"I'm really optimistic. I'm excited," Marinelli said. "I feel good about it. We'll wait and see. Each morning is a new adventure."

The Detroit Free Press reports that Jones will wear a compression sock on his foot to limit any swelling incurred from the pressurized cabin of the airplane as the team flies to Philadelphia today.

"It comes down to each morning and a flight," Marinelli said. "A flight can get him to swell. I feel very optimistic. I just don't want to tell you something and it doesn't work out that way."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) practiced hard Wednesday and his foot responded well adding more optimism on his chances of playing this Sunday. Barring a setback today or Friday, Jones said he's looking forward to his first action of the season. "I practiced hard," Jones said. "I tried to go all out, and it felt good. We're going to see -- towards the end of the week, see how it feels. I'm optimistic." HC Rod Marinelli, who earlier said he would like to get Jones 15-20 snaps echoed Jones' optimism. "He was cutting pretty violently today and running pretty hard today. I'm optimistic. It's the day after where we find out. He can either get really sore and swollen, or there's nothing the next day."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. According to the Detroit Free Press, coach Rod Marinelli said Jones cut pretty violently, ran pretty hard and didn't seem to have any problems. Jones said he felt good and was optimistic he would play Sunday.

"It's not so much today, it's tomorrow morning," Marinelli said. "That's the issue."

"I'm probably not going to feel that way (100%) all year," Jones said. "I'm just going to fight through most of it, just being able to manage the pain and the swelling. I probably won't be 100% this year. It takes a year to be totally a hundred. I don't feel totally a hundred, but I feel good."

RB Kevin Jones (DET) Coach Rod Marinelli is optimistic that tailback Kevin Jones will make his first appearance of the year for the Detroit Lions in Sunday's game at Philadelphia according to the Detroit News. Tatum Bell will continue to start, Marinelli said. Jones will be limited to 15 to 20 plays in a backup role.

"I'm optimistic, but I don't want to tell you something I can't back up 100 percent," Marinelli said Monday at his weekly press conference. "I feel good because he feels good," Marinelli said.

*** Friday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) is listed as Doubtful and isn't expected to play Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) was very limited in Thursday's practice and will likely miss another game Sunday according to Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Working Wednesday but being unable to work Thursday has been a recurring problem for Morency. Brandon Jackson will get the start again but DeShawn Wynn will see more time as well after a great performance last week.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

RB Vernand Morency (GB) will likely be back to practice Wednesday and is making improvement. He's practiced the last two Wednesday's but had to pull back on Thursday due to soreness.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) is listed as Questionable with a chest issue. Said coach Gary Kubiak: "He'll be a game-time decision. Ronnie's still a little sore. He did practice today. It was a little bit limited. I'll make a game-time decision with him." Kubiak was asked who would go if Dayne can't play: "Then Samkon Gado goes. It's just one-for-one. And Ahman's (Green) fine."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) partially participated in Thursday's practice. Coach Gary Kubiak had this to say on Dayne. Ronnie, there's a little bit of question on Ronnie. He did practice some today. He did not put on his pads with the rest of the guys, so we'll push him tomorrow and we'll make that decision. If not, Samkon (Gado) will go."

"(Dayne's problem is) some bruised ribs, and coming out of the game just in general, beat up. Eighteen tough carries and 15 of them in the fourth quarter. But he did do some things today, he just didn't get in the banging with everybody else."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) did not practice on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ahman Green (HOU) practiced fully on Friday. He is listed as Probable and should start Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ahman Green (HOU) practiced fully on Thursday. Coach Gary Kubiak had this to say on Green. "Yeah, he's fine. We really only work him two days a week anyway, and I wouldn't have worked him much yesterday at all. He came out and was a little sore from the game. I'd rather get Samkon (Gado) those reps anyway, so it's just my decision, but he's fine. He took everything today."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ahman Green (HOU) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** RB Tony Richardson (MIN) partially participated in Friday's practice but is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Deuce McAllister (NO) did not practice on Wednesday. We'll see where he's at tomorrow, but he should be fine."

"Brian Westbrook did a nice job [today] at practice," coach Andy Reid said. "He had quite a few reps out there, so we'll see what he does overnight and make sure he's OK come game time."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) watched Thursday's practice much like he did on Wednesday. The strained knee that Westbrook suffered in Monday night's game was scheduled to be looked at further by team physicians later today. Westbrook's official designation for Sunday's game against the Lions will come Friday. Correll Buckhalter has taken reps with the first-team offense in Westbrook's stead.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) did not practice on Wednesday. He twisted a knee in the loss to Washington Monday night and after sitting out practice Wednesday, he was scheduled to be examined by a doctor. "It's sore right now," head coach Andy Reid said of Westbrook's knee. "The doctor's going to check on him and then determine what he does from there." NFL Network's Adam Schefter says the injury is not expected to keep Westbrook from playing this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Najeh Davenport (PIT) did not practice on Wednesday.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Willie Parker (PIT) HC Mike Tomlin said that he will use Willie Parker, "until the wheels fall off". Much has been made of the "Curse of 370" in which a player's production tends to fall dramatically after a season in which a running back has 370 or more carries in a season. Parker had 339 last season and is currently on pace for 400. "He's getting better with each carry as these games go on, and I'm starting to realize that about him. He's a rhythm runner," Tomlin said. "So we're going to feed him. We're not going to make any bones about that."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) will continue to wear a cast over his left wrist against the Bengals. "I'm feeling a lot better," Alexander said. "It has been a good, healthy week for me."

*** Friday Update *** RB Maurice Morris (SEA) is listed as Doubtful with a hip injury and isn't expected to play. That means Alvin Pearman would fill in again as the #2 RB behind Shaun Alexander.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) returned to practice after traveling to Florida to attend his mother's funeral.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) did not practice on Wednesday.

RB Cadillac Williams (TB) should get more carries in the coming weeks. "I want to see him carry the ball a lot more. He needs to get himself ready to carry the ball a lot more," HC Jon Gruden said. "He needs to get hit. He needs to play and work himself through some of his rust and inactivity I forced him through in the preseason. All I heard about him was about not carrying the ball in the preseason. Well, you're going to get it a lot in the coming weeks, my friend."

*** Friday Update *** RB Casey Cramer (TEN) did not practice on Friday and will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Josh Reed (BUF) practiced fully on Wednesday.

WR Mark Bradley (CHI) was hoping for more playing time. HC Lovie Smith put that issue to rest on Monday by saying, "I mean, Mark's our fifth receiver. It's hard to talk about where the fifth receiver fits in. No team in the country can talk about where the fifth receiver fits in. Mark's one of our guys who will dress. He'll get some occasional plays. And we'll go from there. Right now we have to get in a position where we're taking care of one, two and three, and then possibly four before we get to [Bradley]."

*** Friday Update *** WR Antonio Chatman (CIN) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Tab Perry (CIN) will not play this weekend. Glenn Holt will be the team's WR3.

A league spokesman said the fine was $7,500.

*** Friday Update *** WR Greg Jennings (GB) partially participated in Friday's practice but is still expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Greg Jennings (GB) did not practice on Wednesday.

WR Greg Jennings (GB) PackersNews.com reports that Coach Mike McCarthy plans to wait until later in the week to test receiver Greg Jennings' injured hamstring. The last two weeks, Jennings has tried to practice on Wednesday only to drop out later in the week. He has missed the first two regular-season games. "I may hold him a little longer in the week because I want to give him every chance to get ready for this game," McCarthy said on Monday.

*** Friday Update *** WR James Jones (GB) claimed Friday that he didn't get hurt Thursday according to the AP.

Instead, Jones said coach Mike McCarthy became protective after he said he felt some tightness in his hamstring during the team's jog-through.

"It was Coach just being scared and nervous. It wasn't nothing about my hammy," Jones said. "That's why I told Coach I'm never telling him anything again. I was out there in warmups, and I said, 'Coach, it's a little cold out here, I'm going to go over here and stretch, my hammy is a little tight.' The next thing I know, all the trainers are running up on me, and Coach is like, 'Get him out. Get Jones out of practice.' I'm like, I'm 100 percent, I just need to stretch.' It was crazy."

He's listed as probable with a hamstring.

*** Thursday Update *** WR James Jones (GB) left practice Thursday morning with an apparent right hamstring injury. Jones hobbled back to the line of scrimmage clutching his right thigh after running a deep route about 20 minutes into practice. A short time later, Jones left the receivers' stretching circle, got into an SUV and was driven away by a member of the training staff. Coach Mike McCarthy described it as a "tweaked" hamstring.

"I'm a little nervous," McCarthy said. "He wanted to practice, but he got sent up top (to the training room)."

Jones made a brief appearance at his locker and was asked if the injury was a concern. "Nah," Jones said, as he walked away.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Andre Johnson (HOU) will not play this week and it could be several weeks before he's back. Coach Gary Kubiak had this when asked if there was anything new on Johnson.

"No, just that you guys know he won't play this week. I mean, we were hoping for a miracle and we've still got time for one, but it doesn't look good. You know, like I said, the good news is he's going to be fine. The question is how long's it going to be? Is it going to be a week, three weeks, five weeks? I don't think we know until they kind of get him out of the thing that he's in right now and really test him out, and the plan is to do that tomorrow."

When Kubiak was asked about a report that says that WR Andre Johnson will miss five weeks, he said, "Well, I think that would definitely be the worst scenario. And I'm very optimistic, especially with a guy like him who's a really hard worker and very well-conditioned player. If anybody should make it back quicker than the doctors think that he can, it's probably that guy. So I'm going to be on the optimistic side."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Andre Johnson (HOU) did not practice on Wednesday. Johnson said he doesn't plan to play against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Johnson, battling a sprained knee, also added that he is not sure when he will be back in the starting lineup. "If you look at me right now, no, I won't be there out there Sunday," Johnson said. "I'm taking it day-by-day, week-by-week." HC Gary Kubiak hopes Johnson will be back soon. "How long will he be out? I don't know," Kubiak said. "I know that it's very favorable that this could be a short-term deal. I don't think we'll know until he's re-examined, which I think the re-examination is going to take place Friday. It's obvious that the chances are great that he's not going to play this weekend and we have to prepare for him not to play, but we're sure hoping that it doesn't take very long."

WR Andre Johnson (HOU) is doubtful to play when the team plays the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday. The Texans had an MRI done on Johnson's left knee Monday morning and it revealed a sprain. "I would say that he is doubtful for that football game," Kubiak said. "We'll know more in the next couple of days. There was no swelling, but there's definitely a sprain there. It's a concern right now." "He has a knee sprain," Kubiak said. "That's the good news and the bad news. We feel fortunate. Andre is going to be fine. Is he going to be fine in one week? Or is he going to be fine in four weeks? We're still in the evaluation stage. We don't know."

*** Friday Update *** WR Jacoby Jones (HOU) will start Sunday. Said coach Gary Kubiak: "I'm going to start Kevin (Walter) and Jacoby (Jones). So we'll start them two, but we'll play all four of them, as I told you. We're going to have a rotation system, and it will take all four of them for us to be successful without Andre (Johnson) in there. So we'll get them all ready to go." When asked why Jones got the start, Kubiak said, "I think he's earned the right. He's played extremely well. He was working as our third.
