Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) Four days after straining a groin during the Ravens' season opener in Cincinnati, quarterback Steve McNair remains uncertain if he will play against the New York Jets, leaving the door open for Kyle Boller to man the offense. McNair looked loose on Friday dropping back from center and zipping the ball to his targets. He made it clear after practice that the decision to play could linger up until game time. "If I can play, I can play. I'm not optimistic about anything. If I can't, I can't," McNair said. "If I can go out there and move and continue to do the things I can do, without altering my mechanics, I'm going to play." It was the groin injury that caused many of McNair's passes against the Bengals to sail high, as he experienced pain when he planted and pushed off his leg.

*** Saturday Update *** QB Kellen Clemens (NYJ) NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that Clemens will start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens in place of injured starter Chad Pennington. Pennington injured his ankle while being tackled last Sunday against the New England Patriots. Sunday will be the first career start for Clemens, the second-year backup out of Oregon. "I prepare like I'm going to play, so if my number is called I give them the best opportunity to help the team win," Clemens said on Monday. "I'm going to prepare as best as I can and try to be as ready as possible." His has the support of his teammates. "I think Kellen is prepared," wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. "He's prepared the entire offseason, so I wouldn't expect a drop-off. I think we'll be fine and we won't have to make any adjustments, as far as receivers."

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) could be one week away from carrying the ball again for the Lions. Jones has improved so rapidly the last two weeks there is a chance he might play next weekend at Philadelphia. "It's a lot better than it was last week," Jones said after practice Friday, adding there has been soreness. "(Thursday), I felt the best I've felt in the last two practices. It's encouraging." HC Rod Marinelli is encouraged by Jones' progress. "He went hard (Thursday), and looked explosive," he said. "He'll be close. It's going to be on him. He's going to have to tell us, 'I feel good.' He's the only one wearing that foot. We ask him to be very honest."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Larry Johnson (KC) denied he was the rapper in the now-infamous song that played virtually everywhere Friday on the Internet. Johnson's name has been connected to a song containing derogatory comments about the Chiefs, racial slurs, profanity and references to guns and weapons. He made a statement after practice Friday denying involvement. "I've had ongoing problems with people impersonating me on MySpace pages," Johnson said. "I've alerted NFL security about the rap song that's on the Internet that was supposedly rapped by me, which (it) isn't. It's in NFL security's hands, and I'm pretty sure they'll take care of it to the best of their ability. I'm really worried about the Chicago Bears on Sunday and let things go from there."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Deuce McAllister (NO) had just 10 carries for 38 yards in the season-opening loss to Indianapolis but talks of more touches this weekend. "If there are more plays, then obviously there are going to be more touches," McAllister said. "It's more about falling down and falling behind rather than abandoning the run. People say I'm not getting the touches; you have to look at the situation of the game. We have to be successful on first and second down. Me and Reggie both will have more opportunities."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) is banged up again, but he'll play through whatever pain there is after the Seahawks rig up some sort of protective device for his sprained left wrist. For the second year in a row, Alexander got hurt in the season opener. Last September he hurt a foot. Last week it was the wrist, over which Alexander wore a protective cast Wednesday and Thursday and a bigger cast Friday in practice. "We're being real careful with that," HC Mike Holmgren said after Friday's workout. "He feels really good about playing with that thing." Holmgren acknowledged that Alexander is limited slightly with the cast but that the running back must get used to it. "It does affect him, certainly," Holmgren said. Alexander downplayed the injury and his cast on Thursday and was not on the team's injury report all week because he practiced. Normal backup RB Maurice Morris has a hip injury. He did not practice on Friday, and if unavailable this weekend, Holmgren said Leonard Weaver and Alvin Pearman would split duties.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Alvin Pearman (SEA) With Maurice Morris likely out this week, Pearman would assume the #2 RB role. Shaun Alexander says he's fine with the hand, but Pearman is the guy to watch if something were to flare up with Alexander.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) returned to practice with the 49ers on Friday and admitted it was difficult in the emotional wake of his mother's death Wednesday. Gore flew with the team to St. Louis later Friday for its Sunday game with the Rams. Gore will leave St. Louis for his home in Coral Gables, Fla., after the game.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) was limited in practice once again on Friday with bruised ribs and his status will be a game-time decision. "I'll go out and try it on Sunday, fly around and bump around," Williams said. "It feels real good. I'm going to have a little padding, but nothing that's going to be abnormal to hinder my ball carrying."

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Yamon Figurs (BAL) is expected to get his first start of the season and will return kickoffs and punts when the Ravens host the New York Jets tomorrow. The team had planned to bring Figurs along slowly, but that all changed when returner B.J. Sams was lost for the season last Monday.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) Browns CB Daven Holly was upset by a late hit laid on him by Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward in last week's season opener. The league agreed, and took $5,000 out of Ward's paycheck. Ward called the play "a clean hit that just came a little late."

Tight End

*** Saturday Update *** TE Stephen Alexander (DEN) was waived on Saturday and Denver signed converted tackle Chad Mustard for the second time this month.

Kicker

Offensive Line

Defensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** DL Chris Kelsay (BUF) The NFL has fined Chad Kelsay $5,000 for a hit on QB Jay Cutler last week. The hit, which appeared to be helmet-to-helmet contact, did not draw a flag.

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Freddie Keiaho (IND) has not practiced all week because of a dislocated right elbow, an injury he sustained against New Orleans, and remains doubtful for the team's game against the Titans on Sunday. Should Keiaho miss the game, his replacement will be 3rd-year veteran Tyjuan Hagler, a fifth round choice out of Cincinnati.

General Team News

All the news

Quarterback

*** Friday Update *** QB Matt Leinart (ARI) The Arizona Cardinals' longest pass play against San Francisco on Monday night was 15 yards, and that was to running back Edgerrin James. But that wasn't because receivers weren't open down the field, HC Ken Whisenhunt said. "There were guys that were open downfield that we didn't see," he said. "If you don't see them and you don't throw it, it's going to look that way."

*** Friday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) partially participated in Friday's practice and remains a game-time decision for this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) partially participated in Thursday's practice but according to the Baltimore Sun, coach Brian Billick said he's "very optimistic" about McNair being able to play this week. Although Kyle Boller took all the snaps today with the first-team offense.

McNair didn't throw a pass during practice, and Billick said that will be the "litmus test" whether he starts.

"He's a tough guy. If it's just pain, that's a no-brainer," Billick said. "But can he throw and push off it comfortably? That's the big issue."

McNair's improving and was moving around better than he was Monday. He'll likely be a game time decision. "I've been through this before as far as not participating much in practice and then playing -- and playing well," McNair said. "If it comes down to it, that's what I'll do."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) did not practice on Wednesday. Coach Brian Billick sounded optimistic that McNair could play this week but said that it all depended on how he felt later this week. McNair is obviously a veteran that knows his body and has experience playing injured.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Derek Anderson (CLE) Browns GM Phil Savage announced on Tuesday that Derek Anderson would serve as the team's starting quarterback in Week 2. "Derek (Anderson) is the starter, Brady (Quinn) is the No. 2 and Ken (Dorsey) will help them both in the classroom," said Savage. Meanwhile, HC Romeo Crennel said today he wouldn't hesitate to put rookie Brady Quinn in against the Bengals if Anderson struggles. "If there's evidence, or I get the feeling that things can be straightened out, you can give the guy a chance. But if things can't get straightened out, then, I think you have to do something quickly," Crennel said. On the other hand, he expects Anderson to perform well. Despite the expectations for Anderson, Crennel wants to get Quinn some action, saying it would be good to get Quinn a few series before he starts a game. "If the opportunity arises, it will be good to get him in there and get his feet wet. But you just can't say that the opportunity is going to come up," Crennel said.

QB Brady Quinn (CLE) has not been ruled out of the starting lineup for week two. After the trade of Charlie Frye, there is certainly an opening that will be filled by either Quinn or Derek Anderson, who replaced Frye in Cleveland's week one loss. In Monday's press conference, HC Romeo Crennel offered no hints. "There are no personnel changes we will talk about,'' said Crennel. "Whether I will make any (changes) or not, I will let you know the next time we meet." The next press conference will be Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** QB Jon Kitna (DET) HC Mike Martz absolved Kitna of blame on both interceptions thrown in last week's game. Martz took the blame for calling a bad play on the first one. "The interception in the end zone, that's coaching," Martz said. "We told him to throw it there against that coverage... That's just a dumb, dumb play by design," said Martz. Kitna was 27 of 36 passes (75 percent) against the Raiders, with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

*** Friday Update *** QB Dan Orlovsky (DET) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Dan Orlovsky (DET) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Dan Orlovsky (DET) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced fully on Friday and will play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. Remember that the Patriots will list Brady in this manner every week. He will start as normal this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Eli Manning (NYG) partially participated in Friday's practice and is officially questionable to play this weekend. In the team portion of practice, Manning didn't just throw on the side; he took about half of the first-team snaps. The team portion of practice is closed to the media, but backup QB Jared Lorenzen was among the many in the locker room today trumpeting how good Manning looked. The consensus among players seems to be that it will now be a surprise if Manning doesn't play against the Packers on Sunday. For his part, HC Tom Coughlin remains tight-lipped and would only say that a decision likely won't be made until just before kickoff.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Eli Manning (NYG) did not practice Thursday but threw on the side to test his injured shoulder. It's unclear at this point if he'll practice tomorrow. If he doesn't and plays on Sunday, he will have had no prep time for the Packers. For his part, Manning says he would be ready. "I know the offense; I know what we're doing. I go through the mental reps. I'll definitely be ready to play," Manning said, adding that he feels better than he did on Monday and Tuesday. He qualified that he still has "work to do" to get physically ready.

Coach Coughlin continued his optimistic stance. "He is getting better. It is encouraging," Coughlin said. "He's doing a little bit more on the side. He didn't take snaps or anything. He will be better and it is encouraging each day." Manning will likely be a game time decision but we're leaning towards him not playing.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Eli Manning (NYG) was at practice Wednesday, but he was only taking snaps and handing off as he tested his bruised right shoulder. He was scheduled to throw later in the day. HC Tom Coughlin gave no indication whether Manning would play on Sunday against the Packers, saying that Manning is not as sore as he was a few days ago and that the swelling in his shoulder had subsided. "I am encouraged by his progress," Coughlin said.

QB Eli Manning (NYG) might miss next week's game against Green Bay, but his shoulder injury is not as serious as originally rumored to be. ESPN sources said Manning had a slight separated shoulder, but Manning showed good arm mobility in the locker room after the game. He noted his ability to continue playing after the game, which included a touchdown pass to WR Plaxico Burress. "It wasn't a lob," Manning said. "I put something on it, it was accurate. So that makes me feel positive about my status this week."

Coach Tom Coughlin had this statement Monday when asked if there was truth to the report that Manning would miss four weeks.

Said Coughlin: No. I don't know where that report comes from. I don't know where supposedly the information was found. Mid-afternoon, I will say, this afternoon we got the report from our doctors that after having done the MRI and done all the testing. We are just going to have to see how it is. Whether he can practice and play on a daily basis. When he will be able to do the things he needs to be able to do. Quite frankly, if it is not possible this week then it will be another week. It is Monday, he has tomorrow. Literally he has Wednesday even if he doesn't work Wednesday of full treatments. He will be in here two or three times tomorrow, he spends most of the day in here anyway, so we will continue to see what kind of progress can be made in a short amount of time with regard to his throwing motion.

*** Friday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend. Despite published reports that the Jets had already decided on starting backup quarterback Kellen Clemens this weekend, HC Eric Mangini insisted that hadn't been determined. "I'll make a decision once all the information's in," Mangini said before Friday's practice.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) partially participated in Thursday's practice. Pennington dropped back and threw a few light passes during practice on Thursday. That counts as significant progress for Pennington, who is still preparing to play against the Ravens. Pennington appeared to favor his injured right ankle in practice, but made some throws during drills after not taking any snaps the previous day during the half-hour period that the media are allowed to view. HC Eric Mangini said in today's press conference that Pennington's job is safe and will return as the starter after his ankle heels. "Chad's the starting quarterback. He's the starting quarterback," Mangini said.

Still, it looks like Kellen Clemens will get the start unless Pennington makes a marked improvement.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) doubts that he'll be able to play this Sunday according to a person close to the situation. Pennington suffered an ankle injury during opening week against the Patriots. "Chad doesn't think he could play this week," the person said yesterday. "He said the ankle is really sore. He wants to play and he's going to give it a try, but he doesn't think he's going to play," said the source. Pennington partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) HC Eric Mangini confirmed on Monday that Chad Pennington has an injured right ankle. However, the team would not say how badly Pennington is hurt or how long he will be sidelined. "It is the ankle, same as what was announced during the game," Mangini said. "We'll review it during the course of the week, like we do every injury situation." Kellen Clemens will get the start if Pennington can not go.

*** Friday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) will likely get his first start this weekend, after a wild series of events Friday. Starter Josh McCown pulled up a little lame on his injured right foot Friday, so after Friday's practice, Raiders HC Lane Kiffin all but declared Culpepper the starter for Sunday's game at the Denver. Earlier in the week, Kiffin had said McCown would start if he were healthy, but he's been slowed by his foot injury as well as a right index finger problem.

*** Friday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) partially participated in Friday's practice but is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) was wearing gloves on both hands and not participating in Wednesday's practice. McCown has a cracked bone on the index finger of his throwing hand. He was wearing a baseball hat and retrieving balls for his teammates by catching them with his left hand.

QB Josh McCown (OAK) On the final play of Sunday's loss, Josh McCown smashed his index finger into the helmet of OT Cornell Green, slightly cracking it. McCown could not grip a football Monday. The Raiders are uncertain whether McCown will be able to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos. It has been speculated within the Raiders organization that McCown could miss a couple of weeks. It's also possible that, if McCown shows up for work Wednesday and can grip a football, he will play on Sunday. And McCown's finger is not the only wound he is nursing. McCown also suffered a sprain foot that was swollen enough Monday to require X-rays. The X-rays were negative, but McCown is physically beaten up, perhaps leaving the Raiders no choice but to turn to Daunte Culpepper, who had a highly impressive preseason.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB JaMarcus Russell (OAK) went through drills with his teammates today. His contract details include a six-year deal worth $61 million, including $32 million guaranteed. The contract could be worth as much as $68 million if Russell and the team reach all of the outlined performance and appearance based incentives.

QB JaMarcus Russell (OAK) has agreed to a six-year contract and will finally join the Raiders roster. He is likely at least a few weeks away from being able to play as (according to NFL.com's Adam Schefter) the team my even place him on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

*** Friday Update *** QB A.J. Feeley (PHI) had a second operation on his injured non-throwing hand Friday, one day after the hand swelled following practice. Feeley's hand swelled after practice Thursday, and that prompted doctors to operate again, inserting a plate and "synthetic bone material." Feeley didn't practice Friday, and his availability for Monday's game against the Washington Redskins was not known.

*** Thursday Update *** QB A.J. Feeley (PHI) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Charlie Frye (SEA) had comments on his recent trade to Seattle. "It's just coming out of nowhere. Two days ago I'm the starter, and now I'm getting on a flight to Seattle. You can't put it into words. I have a great opportunity waiting for me in Seattle, where I can learn from a head coach (Mike Holmgren) who has a track record for grooming young quarterbacks." Browns HC Romeo Crennel has no such track record, of course. Frye added, "I know the best of my career is still ahead of me."

QB Charlie Frye (SEA) The Browns traded Charlie Frye to Seattle Tuesday. Frye started Sunday's game against Pittsburgh and lasted all of 20 minutes before being benched. The Browns will receive a sixth round draft pick for Frye. The trade helps Seattle free up QB Seneca Wallace, who has previously moonlighted as a receiver.

Running Back

RB Jerious Norwood (ATL) could see more touches this week according to coach Bobby Petrino. "We certainly want to get the ball in his hands," Petrino said. "He's the guy who has the speed and can make big plays for us. He showed that."

*** Friday Update *** RB Mike Anderson (BAL) returned to the team after missing Monday night's game against the Bengals due to personal reasons. "It was a family thing," Anderson said. "Everything is good now."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB B.J. Sams (BAL) will miss the remainder of the 2007 season after suffering a severe knee injury, according to head coach Brian Billick. "He's definitely out for the year," Billick said. "It's just a shame because B.J. was having such a great preseason and was so anxious to come back and re-establish himself after the injury last year."

*** Friday Update *** RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) practiced fully on Friday and will play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) returned to practice on Thursday as expected. He will play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) missed Wednesday's practice due to illness. "He had a minor flu or was sick to his stomach," said HC Dick Jauron. "We don't think it'll be long term."

*** Friday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) did not practice on Friday and will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) did not practice on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (DET) did not practice on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) partially participated in Friday's practice but is not expected to play this weekend. HC Rod Marinelli said Friday that he was "99% certain" Jones would not play Sunday against Minnesota. Marinelli said Jones practiced really hard Thursday. But he said Jones would have to sit down with the team doctors to determine he is ready. "That's a brutal injury," Marinelli said. "Now the next step is the pressure of going to the ground."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ryan Grant (GB) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ryan Grant (GB) practiced fully on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) did not practice on Friday and looks very questionable to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) tried Thursday but failed to get through a full practice for the second consecutive week due to a strained right knee. "It flared up on him," HC Mike McCarthy said.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ronnie Brown (MIA) would likely see a bigger role if Jesse Chatman isn't able to get over his knee injury. Chatman missed his second straight day of work Thursday and may not be ready this week.

*** Friday Update *** RB Jesse Chatman (MIA) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend. HC Cam Cameron said it looked like he was at full speed, and he anticipates using Chatman in a similar role as he did in Washington, meaning he'll continue to share the rushing load with RB Ronnie Brown.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Jesse Chatman (MIA) did not practice on Thursday making it the second day in a row he's missed. If he can't work tomorrow, Patrick Cobbs or Lorenzo Booker will likely have their role elevated.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, both Cobbs and Booker wore scout team jerseys for the second straight practice, but each has gotten work in Chatman's place. But neither guy would likely see as much work as Chatman did meaning Ronnie Brown would likely have a bigger role.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Jesse Chatman (MIA) missed Wednesday's practice with a bruised left knee, although the team has maintained this week that the injury is minor. Chatman had a limp as he walked around the practice field.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Mewelde Moore (MIN) With injuries to Chester Taylor (oblique), Tony Richardson (forearm) and Naufahu Tahi (ankle), Mewelde Moore could be activated for Week 2. Moore was expected to be the team's punt returner this season, but did not dress for opening week. WR Bobby Wade took over return duties. We had three fullbacks up [Sunday], there may be a time we have three tailbacks up for a reason," HC Brad Childress said.

*** Friday Update *** RB Tony Richardson (MIN) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Tony Richardson (MIN) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Tony Richardson (MIN) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** RB Naufahu Tahi (MIN) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Naufahu Tahi (MIN) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Naufahu Tahi (MIN) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend. Taylor (hip) is expected to be a game-day decision Sunday. "He's done everything he can to put himself in a position to play," HC Brad Childress said. "We'll see. We'll leave it up to him." Childress said the plan is to have Taylor do some on-field work early Sunday to get an idea of how he's doing.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. "I'm just taking it day by day, come out here and do a little something," Taylor said. He says this week's game in his hometown of Detroit is special to him. "I usually treat every game the same but it's a little bit more going home and have all your family there," Taylor said. "You want to go out there and play."

Coach Brad Childress said Taylor's health, and not the performance of Adrian Peterson would determine how much Taylor plays.

"His body will talk to him and he's dealing with the trainers," Childress said. "It's not that I won't talk to him, but he'll know and I'll know by watching him. We don't ever want to put anybody out there that can't defend themselves."

RB Chester Taylor (MIN) is battling an "contusion of his oblique". The oblique is a muscle near the lower part of the ribcage. It's a painful thing and it doesn't look to be a minor issue for him. The Vikings have Adrian Peterson raring to go if Taylor is limited.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Robert Douglas (NYG) will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) was walking without a limp or a wrap on his right knee on Wednesday and swore he'd be running by next week. "It sure won't be five weeks," he said of the time he'll miss. He will not play this weekend.

RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) is expected to miss from three to five weeks with a sprained MCL knee injury. Derrick Ward will get first crack at replacing him.

RB Derrick Ward (NYG) Giants players reportedly expect Derrick Ward (rather than Reuben Droughns) to assume the team's feature back role while RB Brandon Jacobs recovers from a sprained MCL in his right knee (expected to take three to five weeks).

Coach Tom Coughlin says there's a lot to like about Ward: "His quickness, his speed, the fact that he's 230 pounds - a lot of times people don't even recognize that fact," Coughlin said. "He has played enough now to be a guy that has a little savvy about the spot. He's certainly proved in training camp that he deserves the opportunity and he certainly will get some more."

*** Friday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (NYJ) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (NYJ) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (NYJ) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Stacy Tutt (NYJ) practiced fully on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Andrew Pinnock (SD) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) was getting to test the usefulness of the soft, padded cast he was wearing over his left wrist, halfway up his forearm, during practice Friday. One day after Alexander was playfully coy about what the injury was or whether he was even wearing a cast, Seahawks HC Mike Holmgren said Alexander sprained his wrist in last week's win over Tampa Bay. "We're being real careful with that," Holmgren said, "He feels really good about playing with that thing. He feels better. And so they are going to rig something up during the game to allow him to play" on Sunday at Arizona.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) practiced fully again with the protective cast on his left hand. Alexander sounded in good spirits talking about it according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "I would call it a boo-boo," Alexander said while grinning.

Asked what he was wearing to protect the boo-boo, Alexander said, "Just a thing that we made up."

When someone suggested it was a boo-boo protector, Alexander said, "There you go. A boo-boo with a boo-boo protector. It sounds great."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) practiced but was wearing a cast or a brace on his left hand. It is unclear exactly what the injury is (hand or wrist) and Alexander was not talking today; tomorrow is his day to speak to the media. Alexander practiced but other running backs got more reps than they normally do. He caught a pass as well but had the majority of his carries in his right hand.

*** Friday Update *** RB Maurice Morris (SEA) did not practice on Friday and is not expected to play this weekend. Alvin Pearman would assume the #2 RB role with Morris out.

*** Friday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) returned to practice after being excused yesterday to attend to family matters following the passing of his mother. Said coach Mike Nolan: "We will use Frank as normal. He was in good spirits today. His family being with him helps."

*** Friday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) returned to practice after being excused yesterday to attend to family matters following the passing of his mother.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) missed practice Thursday after the death of his mother. Gore's mother, Liz, died Wednesday afternoon, and he briefly visited the 49ers' training complex Thursday before leaving to be with relatives in California. He still intends to play in San Francisco's game at St. Louis on Sunday. "I think that Frank feels that his mother would want him to do his job," HC Mike Nolan said. "Frank knows that. I think that's where he'll put his attention when it comes to Sunday's game. I'm sure it's hard for him to get focused with what happened."

*** Friday Update *** RB Antonio Pittman (STL) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend. HC Jon Gruden said on Friday that he'll wait until just before game time to decide whether Williams will play Sunday.

Gruden said Williams has "a shot to go" Sunday. "You know, until you take a Cadillac out and really drive it you don't know if you want to buy it," Gruden said. "I think he looks good cruising around, but I want to take it out on the interstate and put the pedal down, man."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) returned to practice Thursday, four days after suffering bruised ribs at Seattle. "I've been optimistic that he would play and today was a good sign, although we'll see how he feels tomorrow when we practice again," HC Jon Gruden said. "He's a man of few words, he doesn't say a lot," Gruden said. "He's played enough football, I think, to know whether he can or can't. We'll give him another day to see where he is after he sleeps on today's workout. We'll have some dialogue, before, during and after the game, I'm sure, about how he feels."

Our friends at PewterReport.com report that Williams has never worn a flack jacket under his pads to protect any shots on his ribs, and Gruden made no indication that his injured running back wore one during practice.

"I don't know; I don't believe he did," Gruden said. "He looked slim and lean out there so I don't think he had any extra padding. It didn't look like he did."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) partially participated in Wednesday's practice. Coach Jon Gruden sounded optimistic.

"He is making progress," Gruden said. "We obviously need him in the game. We're going to find out in the next day or so as to his true status or availability for the game. I'm going to hold out hope that he can go. He's got sore ribs. We did the tests. There are no broken ribs there. We expect him back, hopefully, sometime soon. Obviously he's a guy we need."

Williams sounded hopeful according to the Bradenton Herald. "I'm going to do everything in my power to get it right," Williams said. "Sunday is a division game, and I need to be ready."

Williams said the improvement in his ribs since the Seattle game is "like night and day."

"It's a positive to me," Williams said. "Hopefully, I'm a quick healer."

RB Cadillac Williams (TB) On Monday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers HC Jon Gruden said that Cadillac Williams was out indefinitely. However, on Tuesday the Bucs say Williams' ribs are not cracked or broken, but merely bruised and very sore. Williams' status may not be known for several days, as he preparers to try and play in the home opener against the Saints on Sunday. "We're going to count on Cadillac playing, optimistically," Gruden said. "But, realistically, he does have sore ribs and so we'll plan for the other guys to have a bigger role in the running game." The other guys are Michael Pittman, Earnest Graham and B.J. Askew. Contingency plans call for all of them to get a significant bump in playing time this week if Williams cannot go.

Glenn chose to have the knee scoped for the second time in the last two months instead of having micro-fracture surgery, which would have put him on IR.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Terry Glenn (DAL) did not practice on Wednesday. While he is not officially listed as Out, he is not expected to play in week two.

WR Terry Glenn (DAL) will seek a second opinion on his right knee from the renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Glenn must choose between the short term fix arthroscopic knee surgery and miss a few weeks, or micro-fracture surgery, which would end his season and possibly his career.

WR Deion Branch (SEA) HC Mike Holmgren sounded like a man breaking up with his significant other. "It's not him. It's me." Holmgren, however, was referring to the fact that Deion Branch has zero receptions last Sunday. "That can't happen. It shouldn't happen. It's our job to get him the ball," Holmgren said. "I must get him the ball. I don't want him to have games where he doesn't have a catch." QB Matt Hasselbeck said that Tampa Bay's coverage was rolling to Branch's side of the field, but Branch didn't seem overly concerned. "We can go a whole season and you'll never see me try to break down our team about getting a reception versus winning the game," Branch said. That's a refreshing attitude.
