The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) made it through the entire week of practice and appears ready to start Sunday's game against the 49ers. But you can't blame HC John Fox if he's a little skittish when it comes naming a starter. When asked Friday if Testaverde seems to have improved, Fox chuckled and said: "Out of respect for our (quarterback) situation, I will wait and see. This is not being coy. This time last week I said Vinny looked good. And then there was Saturday."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) is expected to start in week 14. "Just to quote the medical staff, his streak is not in danger," HC Mike McCarthy said Friday. "He'll be OK."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Donovan McNabb (PHI) is doubtful for Sunday's game against Seattle after missing practice again Friday. "He's working like crazy," HC Andy Reid said. "It's his lateral mobility, his ability to push off right or left and keep himself in a safe position. Until he has that, he can't go out there." McNabb has thrown the ball on the side and was scheduled to work with trainers again after practice Friday, but he didn't participate with the team. "He's had two good workouts, but we're just not quite there," Reid said.

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Travis Henry (DEN) The Broncos still have not heard from the NFL regarding Travis Henry's possible suspension. "I really don't know. There's been rumors," HC Mike Shanahan said on Friday. "I haven't heard anything. It's just speculation." Henry was in a great mood Friday and said he wasn't worried about the pending decision. "I'm good. I keep doing what I can do," said Henry. "There ain't anything I can tell you because I don't know." Although he expects to return to the field this weekend, Henry says he's not 100% healthy: "I'm not going to say I'm 100% because that's not true. I'm doing what I got to do to get back there, to get back to 100%. We running backs take the most hits; the most beatings."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Adrian Peterson (MIN) made it through a full week of practice in good shape and the says he's good to go for Sunday's game against the Lions. Peterson said he experienced some soreness during the week but no more than expected and is anxious to get the first contact out of the way. "I'm thinking, how would it feel if I hit it?" he said. "With the brace and everything, it's not that I would reinjure it. Just how would it feel when somebody hit it? It's not going to slow me down - I'm going to be out there going full speed - but that's something you're going to think about." HC Brad Childress has said the Vikings would ease Peterson back into action, and the expectation is that he will split time with Chester Taylor.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG) will miss Sunday's game.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Derrick Ward (NYG) is expected to start this weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) will start this weekend, but he will share touches with Maurice Morris. "We're going to play them both," HC Mike Holmgren said Friday. "Mo will probably play a little bit more than before Shaun was hurt. I think Shaun understands that. He's handling it like a real professional."

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Larry Fitzgerald (ARI) is listed as questionable Sunday vs. Cleveland with a sore groin. He did a little more in practice Friday than earlier in the week. "He's definitely feeling better," HC Ken Whisenhunt said, adding that Fitzgerald will be a game-time decision. Fitzgerald said earlier in the week that he would be OK to play Sunday. On Friday, he said little except that, "It feels better."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Braylon Edwards (CLE) insists he'll be ready for this Sunday's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. He is especially looking forward to competing against fellow young WR Larry Fitzgerald on the other side. "He's been kicking my butt the last two weeks," Edwards said. "It's going to be fun to go against the Cardinals and a little private individual battle. I don't care about the catches; I care about the touchdowns."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Javon Walker (DEN) seems ready to play this weekend. "I feel like a million bucks," Walker said Friday. "I had a good week. I'm looking forward to Sunday." Remember though that Walker has been overly optimistic several times this season and either failed to play or had a small role (which is likely this weekend).

*** Saturday Update *** WR Jerricho Cotchery (NYJ) will not play Sunday in Miami. It could be a lot longer than that. Cotchery underwent surgery this week to repair a broken right index finger, the Daily News has learned. It's unclear how long he will be sidelined, but it's feared that could be lost for the remainder of the season. Given the injury and the rehab time, along with the fact that Cotchery uses his hands to make his living, it's possible the Jets will err on the side of caution and keep him out the final four games after Miami.

*** Saturday Update *** OL Houston Texans (HOU) G Chester Pitts apologized to his family and team on Friday, one day after he was arrested and charged with speeding off during a traffic stop near Reliant Stadium. Pitts is facing a charge of felony evading arrest in a motor vehicle, Houston Police Department spokeswoman Gabe Ortiz said. He was released from the city jail early Friday after posting bail and is scheduled to appear in court Monday. "It was clearly a misunderstanding," Pitts said after practice Friday. "I would never disrespect the law. My father has been a police officer for 30 years. I have the utmost respect for law enforcement. It was a huge, huge misunderstanding. I'm sorry."

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Oakland Raiders (OAK) Daunte Culpepper's right leg hurts. Josh McCown showers with a plastic bag covering his left hand to keep stitches from getting wet. One will start at QB Sunday. HC Lane Kiffin just doesn't know which one, leaving his quarterback depth chart a mystery. "I don't have an answer for you who's 1-2-3 right now," Kiffin said after Friday's practice. Culpepper didn't practice, leaving the bulk of first-team repetitions to McCown, who dislocated his left little finger Wednesday playing catch with Andrew Walter. Stitches were needed when the bone broke through McCown's skin. Culpepper believes he hurt his right quadriceps during last weekend's win, but it didn't bother him until Wednesday night. Culpepper is listed as questionable for Sunday, and McCown is probable.

McCown is preparing as if he will start. He started the season's first three games before missing four games with a broken toe. He started two more games before a quadriceps injury took him out and Culpepper stepped back in. "I'm definitely learning how to deal with injuries," McCown said. "I have a different perspective for guys, in a way, that I perceive or thought about guys that were injured, because I had never been injured, or when I had been, I played through or dealt with it. So now I have a better understanding." Kiffin said a decision on the starting QB might not be made until game-time.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Kurt Warner (ARI) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Kurt Warner (ARI) practiced fully on Wednesday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Byron Leftwich (ATL) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

QB Kyle Boller (BAL) will remain the team's starter, in place of injured QB Steve McNair, heading into their week 13 contest against the 11-0 New England Patriots. "He's progressing but there's a limitation in how far he can bring that arm up," HC Brian Billick said about Steve McNair's injury. "It is progressing. This week he won't be ready and we'll go week by week after that to see where he is." When asked if McNair would regain the starting job when healthy, Billick said, "Don't know, we'll see."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Steve McNair (BAL) will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Edwards (BUF) has been named the team's starting QB ahead of a struggling J.P. Losman.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB J.P. Losman (BUF) has been benched in favor of Trent Edwards.

*** Friday Update *** QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) practiced fully on Wednesday. HC John Fox said again Tuesday that assuming the health of Testaverde, the 44-year old will start Sunday against the 49ers.

QB Vinny Testaverde (CAR) HC John Fox said today that QB Vinny Testaverde, if healthy, would start next week against San Francisco ahead of struggling QB David Carr and rookie QB Matt Moore. Testaverde was supposed to start this past weekend, but was a late scratch due to a sore back. "I'm almost a little reluctant to name (a starter)," Fox said, referring to Carolina's constantly changing QB scenario. "But I think it would be fair to say if Vinny's healthy, he'll be the guy."

QB Jon Kitna (DET) didn't practice today because of a sore left knee. He said he hopes to practice on Wednesday.

*** Saturday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) is expected to start in week 14. "Just to quote the medical staff, his streak is not in danger," HC Mike McCarthy said Friday. "He'll be OK."

*** Friday Update *** QB Brodie Croyle (KC) did not practice on Friday and will miss this week's game. "He threw a little bit, but just can't move," coach Herm Edwards said. Damon Huard will start and Tyler Thigpen, a rookie claimed off waivers from Minnesota on Sept. 2, will be the backup. WR Eddie Kennison would be the #3 QB likely.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Brodie Croyle (KC) did not practice on Thursday. HC Herman Edwards said that if Croyle isn't able to practice Friday, Damon Huard will start on Sunday. Croyle played through a back injury last week after he was sandwiched by three Raiders defenders. He has yet to practice this week. "I'm not in this thing deep enough where I can do the Steve McNair thing and not practice and then just go in and play," Croyle said. "I'm still young in this league, and I still need all the snaps I can get (before playing)."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Brodie Croyle (KC) missed practice on Wednesday with a sore back, and his availability for this week's game against San Diego could be in question. Croyle, making his second start, was kicked in the back early in the Chiefs' loss to Oakland on Sunday. He played the rest of the game, but has been too sore to do much all week. "He's sore, pretty sore," said Chiefs HC Herm Edwards. "We'll see tomorrow where he's at, if can go. Tomorrow we'll find out. We'll wait as long as we can."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Damon Huard (KC) will start for the team this weekend as Brodie Croyle is still limited with his back injury.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) partially participated in Wednesday's practice, as he has done all season.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Eli Manning (NYG) GM Jerry Reese got in line to criticize QB Eli Manning yesterday when he said his quarterback has "gotten skittish, for whatever reason." Manning, who has been taking heat from all angles lately, threw four interceptions last week at Minnesota and ranks near the bottom of the league with a 58.1% completion percentage and a 75.0 QB rating. Asked to elaborate, Reese said, "Why would I say anything else about this when some people have already put their own negative spin on it?"

*** Thursday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) does not want to stick around any longer than he has to as a backup to now starter Kellen Clemens. "I see myself as a starter in this league. That certainly hasn't changed," Pennington said in his first extensive interview since his benching. "I try my best to not think about the future right now and really focus on how I can help Kellen." Pennington will earn earn $4.8 million in base salary next season, but he would count $7.8 million against the cap. He took a pay cut before last season and it's unlikely he would take another one if asked by the team. By refusing to do so, he could force his release.

*** Friday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) did not practice on Friday and is questionable to play this weekend. "There's a lot of information still to come in," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. "I don't have answer for you who's 1-2-3 right now."

If Culpepper can't play, Kiffin said Josh McCown will start. McCown took most of the first-team snaps Friday for the second straight day.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) was limited in practice Thursday due to a sore quadriceps muscle, but is expected to play this weekend against Denver. "He just came in this morning and it was bothering him, so we were safe with him," HC Lane Kiffin said. "He did some stuff today, so we'll see what he can do tomorrow. I don't anticipate him being out, but if he was then we'll figure it out then."

QB Daunte Culpepper (OAK) will start for the Raiders in their Week 13 game.

*** Friday Update *** QB Josh McCown (OAK) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Donovan McNabb (PHI) did not practice on Friday and is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Donovan McNabb (PHI) did not practice on Thursday. HC Andy Reid said that he does not necessarily need to see McNabb practice to feel comfortable playing him in the game. "I just want to see how he progresses each day," Reid said. "He wants to be in there. He wants to get out and play. It's a matter of if he can move laterally and do those things."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Donovan McNabb (PHI) HC Andy Reid said QB Donovan McNabb will return as the team's starter when he is recovered from his injured ankle. But McNabb did not practice Wednesday, which means backup QB A.J. Feeley could make his second start this week against Seattle. McNabb, however, says there's a good chance he'll be ready this Sunday.

QB Donovan McNabb (PHI) is making progress from thumb and ankle injuries that kept him out of Sunday's loss at New England. However, HC Andy Reid said he wants his quarterback at 100 percent before deciding if he'll play against Seattle this week. "We'll see how he does," Reid said Monday. "We're trying to get him back to 100 percent before we stick him in the game." McNabb worked out Monday morning and any decision about his availability would not be made until later in the week. "I think we're pretty fortunate we have two quarterbacks here that can play," Reid said.

*** Friday Update *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) practiced fully on Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) practiced fully on Wednesday.

*** Friday Update *** QB Shaun Hill (SF) partially participated in Friday's practice but is still expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Shaun Hill (SF) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** QB Alex Smith (SF) partially participated in Friday's practice but is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Alex Smith (SF) Smith's separated shoulder will be re-evaluated next week, at which point a course of action will be recommended. Smith wants to avoid surgery - and the 10 to 12 weeks of rehabilitation that goes along with it. "Definitely, if at all possible, I want to avoid it," he said. "Especially on my throwing shoulder, that's something you don't want to do."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Alex Smith (SF) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.

*** Friday Update *** QB Marc Bulger (STL) will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Marc Bulger (STL) will not play this weekend. "It's just too soon," HC Scott Linehan said of Bulger returning from the concussion. "We'll do the same type of test on Monday, and if he clears that, there is no reason that he should be able to play next week."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Marc Bulger (STL) did not practice on Wednesday. Bulger said on Monday he felt much better and expected to play against the Falcons, but backup Gus Frerotte's assessment was not so positive. "He just seems kind of like he was after the game," Frerotte said. "You can talk to him and he understands what's going on. But he's just a little groggy." HC Scott Linehan said he'd leave the decision to medical personnel. "We'd err on the side of caution with a concussion, for sure," Linehan said. "I talked to him and I just said let's not discuss it until we get through all the tests you need to take first, and then we'll talk about the possibility of playing this game."

QB Marc Bulger (STL) was taken to a hospital for observation after sustaining a concussion during the team's Week 12 game. "He didn't seem quite right on the sideline," HC Scott Linehan said. "We talked a little bit. I could tell right when he came off that there was something that was a little different. He mentioned that he didn't feel good, and that's a big concern. He said he was starting to feel a little nauseous there."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Gus Frerotte (STL) will start this weekend in place of the injured Marc Bulger.

*** Friday Update *** QB Jeff Garcia (TB) partially participated in Friday's practice and is questionable to play this weekend. He'll be a game time decision likely but he is improving.

"I feel a lot better than I thought I would," Garcia told local reporters after practice.

"He's not 100 percent right now but he's closing in on being well enough to play," coach Jon Gruden said. "It's a matter of when he's ready to go out and go, and today was a step in that direction. He's made great improvement and maybe in another 48 hours he'll make more great improvement and be ready to go. We're optimistic but we've prepared ourselves to go in another direction if we have to."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jeff Garcia (TB) did not practice on Thursday but the team is holding out hope he'll be able to go. "We'll expect Jeff to play," coach Jon Gruden said. "For the time being, we get both of them ready to go."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Jeff Garcia (TB) did not practice on Wednesday.

QB Jeff Garcia (TB) made his weekly radio appearance on 620-AM Tuesday morning and made it clear his bruised back is bad enough to sideline him against the Saints. Asked if he thought he could play at New Orleans on Sunday, Garcia said, "I can't even really say that right now." He added that he still can't throw a football because of the discomfort and lack of mobility. Garcia also doesn't have any indication on when he might return to practice this week, though it's possible he could play without any practice time.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Luke McCown (TB) is expected to take the reps during workouts this week for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meaning HC Jon Gruden likely has decided to make a change at the No. 2 quarterback position. Gruden said earlier in the week that his No. 2 quarterback would get all the preparation for Sunday's game rather than splitting snaps between McCown and Bruce Gradkowski. Garcia has a bruised lower back and has not been ruled out.

Running Back

RB Jason Snelling (ATL) will see the lion's share of short yardage work in the future. Snelling was 3-of-4 converting short yardage runs against the Indianapolis Colts last Thursday. "His size and the speed that he hits the hole will help us," HC Bobby Petrino said.

*** Friday Update *** RB Willis McGahee (BAL) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Willis McGahee (BAL) partially participated in Thursday's practice.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Fred Jackson (BUF) is expected to start for the Bills this weekend since both Marshawn Lynch (ankle) and Anthony Thomas (calf) will be sidelined with injuries.

*** Friday Update *** RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) will not play this weekend although he did practice with the team Friday and looked good coming off his cuts.

"Marshawn was limited today, but we've listed him as out," said head coach Dick Jauron. "He did a little bit and that was encouraging, but he won't play this week."

"I'm trying to get out there every second I can," said Lynch. "If I can run, I feel I can play. But they're doing a good job of protecting (me) against me."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) will not play this weekend.

RB Marshawn Lynch (BUF) HC Dick Jauron gave a lukewarm update on Marshawn Lynch Monday. "Marshawn, we're not optimistic again," said Jauron. "He's now doing some running and some cutting, but nothing like full speed playing."

*** Friday Update *** RB Anthony Thomas (BUF) will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Anthony Thomas (BUF) will not play this weekend due to injury. The injured area is near the top of the calf muscle behind the knee. Just how long he'll be unable to practice or play has not been determined due to the rarity of this kind of injury. "I'm not optimistic about Anthony," said HC Dick Jauron. "It's a torn muscle and he's very sore and it's swollen...It's an unusual tear from what I understand," said Jauron.

RB Cedric Benson (CHI) is out for the rest of the season with a left ankle injury that will require surgery.

RB Adrian Peterson (CHI) will start in place of the injured Cedric Benson.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chris Perry (CIN) Perry's season is over. He will stay on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the rest of the season, which means he cannot practice with the team until next season. Perry dislocated his ankle just over one year ago, on Nov. 26.

*** Friday Update *** RB Travis Henry (DEN) practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Travis Henry (DEN) practiced fully on Thursday. "My knee feels real good," said Henry, who has been sidelined since suffering a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament on Nov. 4. HC Mike Shanahan expects Henry to be "ready to go".

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Travis Henry (DEN) has yet to get a ruling on his appeal of a possible one-year suspension for violating the leagues drug policy. A decision could have been handed down as early as one week ago, but the consensus is that no news is good news, both in the short term and long term. Henry will likely be able to play Sunday given the delay, assuming he's healthy. He's been rehabbing a partially torn PCL in his left knee, but says he's ready to return this week against the Raiders. He practiced fully on Wednesday.

RB Travis Henry (DEN) is still awaiting word on his hearing with the NFL. If Henry remains with the Broncos, he said he expects to play Sunday at Oakland. He has missed the past three games with a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Henry said he won't need surgery. "They said it would be about a four-week injury and we're on week four," said Henry, who did not accompany the team to Chicago last weekend because he had the stomach flu. "I've got to get back on the field. I will definitely be ready this week."

It's not going to slow me down - I'm going to be out there going full speed - but that's something you're going to think about."
