Offensive Upgrades / Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Drew Brees - NO - What a difference a good QB can make. Sure this was against a bad Packers team, but you got the feeling the players all believe in Drew Brees. I am not sure anyone ever believed in Aaron Brooks. With Reggie Bush as another option in the passing game, we expect Brees to post solid numbers all season. After two weeks, he has thrown for 529 yards.

QB David Carr - HOU - When you are always behind, you are forced to throw the ball. Carr has actually looked pretty good this year throwing for 4 TDs and no interceptions. He ranks as the 8th best fantasy QB after two weeks.

QB Daunte Culpepper - MIA - This will seem like a strange upgrade, because up to now he has looked pretty bad. But Daunte gets the upgrade due to his next two opponents. He will face Tennessee at home in week 3 and the Texans on the road in week 4. It doesn't get easier than that. This is the week to trade for Daunte Culpepper.

QB Rex Grossman - CHI - Brian Griese may have had a stellar preseason, but he is entrenched as the backup in Chicago. Rex has posted two stellar performances and has a lock on the starting job. The Bears just need their QB to be serviceable with their exceptional defense. Right now though, the offense under Grossman has been excellent. He has 551 passing yards and 5 TDs after two weeks.

QB Matt Hasselbeck - SEA - Talk about Christmas coming early. He is the big winner of the Deion Branch signing. And with Darrell Jackson healthy (and playing to old form), the skies the limit for Hasselbeck.

QB Eli Manning - NYG - What a performance. This is the kind of game that can catapult Eli's confidence. The Giants have a tough schedule going forward, but that could work for Eli as he will be asked to pass late in most games. It's hard to imagine that Eli posted 371 yards and 3 TDs and had a worse day than his brother.

QB Peyton Manning - IND - It's hard to move up from the #1 QB spot, but when you throw for 400 yards you get mentioned here. Houston's defense is bad, but Peyton is also in mid-season form. Peyton's QB rating for the week 2 game was a whopping 129.3.

QB Donovan McNabb - PHI - The Eagles passing offense is clicking on all cylinders right now. Between Stallworth, Westbrook and LJ Smith it seems like someone is always open. McNabb is poised to have a huge year.

QB Carson Palmer - CIN - Even without TJ Houshmandzadeh, Carson Palmer shredded the Cleveland defense through the air. He finished with 352 yards and 2 TDs and could have had more if the team needed it. He is a must start every week.

QB Chad Pennington - NYJ - He had another solid outing in week 2. He doesn't have a very strong arm (after multiple surgeries), but is making excellent decisions. He has a QB rating of 101.4 after two contests.

QB Alex Smith - SF - This year's Alex Smith does not look anything like last year's Alex Smith. After two weeks, he has thrown NO interceptions and has a 93.5 QB rating. He currently ranks as the 12th best QB after two weeks. Grab him if he is still available on your waiver wire.

QB Michael Vick - ATL - He threw for just 92 yards and finished with the 6th most fantasy points at quarterback this week. Until someone can show us how a defense will contain the Atlanta running game, Vick is a must-start every week. The two teams that were supposedly the best at containing Vick (Carolina and Tampa Bay) couldn't keep him from running wild. Lesser teams could be in for some long days.

QB Andrew Walter - OAK - Let's not kid ourselves. He is horrible, but could start after Oakland's week 3 bye if Aaron Brooks rotator cuff injury keeps him out of action. If you are absolutely desperate at QB and have a deep bench, he could be worth a spot. The Raiders face Cleveland and San Francisco in weeks 4 and 5 so there is some hope that he could wrestle the starting the starting gig away from Aaron Brooks with a quality start.

QB Vince Young - TEN - It's pretty obvious to us that this Tennessee team is very bad. And with Kerry Collins playing horrible, why not play for the future and get Vince Young some playing time. He is going to make a lot of mistakes, but his running ability should also yield decent fantasy points when he is a fulltime starter.

RB Joseph Addai - IND - After two weeks, Addai has 108 yards on 23 carries while starter Dominic Rhodes has 66 yards on 30 carries. The transformation is taking place as I write this. I expect after Indianapolis' week 6 bye that Joseph Addai will be the full-time starter.

RB Kevan Barlow - NYJ - He only ran for 42 yards on 14 carries, but his competition (Derrick Blaylock) had just 7 yards on 6 carries. This RBBC looks like it will end soon to us.

RB Ladell Betts - WAS - Clinton Portis continues to miss time. Although we expect Portis to start next week, we are beginning to believe he will be a mainstay on the injury report. Betts had 97 combined yards in relief this week.

RB Warrick Dunn - ATL - I am guessing Dunn does not miss TJ Duckett leaving. As great as last season was, Dunn is on a mission this season. The running game is clicking well and will be the primary game-plan until a defense shows they can stop it. He has not scored yet, but is averaging a whopping 5.32 yards per carry. He leads all rushers with 266 yards after 2 weeks.

RB Samkon Gado - HOU - The Wali Lundy hour is officially over. Houston brought over Gado to compete (and win) the starting job. The fact that he played in week 1 on 2 days of practice speaks volumes on where this is going. The fact that he gained 36 yards on his 3 carries just speeds up the process here. He will be starting soon.

RB Frank Gore - SF - Every time I watch this guy play I am left with the same impression. His legs never stop moving. He played without two of his lineman this week. Did it matter? Nope. He finished with 127 yards and a score. This guy is a machine.

RB Rudi Johnson - CIN - The Chiefs were the hardest team to run against at home in 2005. Rudi cut through them like butter in week 1. In week 2, he sliced through the Browns when they KNEW he was going to run. He is finally healthy this season and appears primed to have his best season as a pro. He is a must-start every week.

RB Laurence Maroney - NE - We see the handwriting on the wall here. After just two games, Maroney already has similar carries and yards to Dillon (Maroney - 33 carries and 151 yards; Dillon 36 carries and 153 yards). Maroney got some of the hard carries this week as well. We expect them to both play going forward, but Maroney to start getting the bulk of the carries.

RB Chester Taylor - MIN - This offensive line is opening up huge holes. Chester Taylor is a marginal starting RB on talent alone, but his opportunity catapults him with this team. He carried the ball 24 times for 113 yards ( 4.7 ypc) and caught another 3 passes for 15 yards.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson - SD - How do you get an upgrade when you are already the #1 back? When you catch 7 passes and completely steamroll the opposition. Tomlinson is even more involved in this offense this year with the unproven Rivers at QB. He is the class of the field at this position this year.

RB Michael Turner - SD - "The Burner" could start on a lot of teams. But he is the backup to the game's best back. Even in this role though, Turner could produce decent numbers in relief. He had 155 combined yards on just 15 touches this week. If you own LaDainian Tomlinson and do not own this player, you are playing with fire.

RB DeAngelo Williams - CAR - Both he and DeShaun Foster got 13 carries this week. Williams produced 74 yards and a score. Foster yielded just 26 yards. With the Panthers 0-2, Foster will not be allowed to have too many more stinker games before they turn over the reigns to the more explosive DeAngelo Williams.

WR Bernard Berrian - CHI - Grossman looked very good against the Lions and seems to be in a groove this year. The Bears have been desperate for someone to step into the WR2, and it looks like Berrian has answered the call. He has two TDs already this season (along with 138 receiving yards) and has few tough opponents over the rest of the season. He's quite likely on your waiver wire. Grab him if you need help at WR.

WR Deion Branch - SEA - A couple of weeks ago, it looked like Branch might sit most of the season as a disgruntled Patriot. The trade to Seattle gives him a huge boost in value. He is probably another week or two from being completely comfortable in the Seahawks' offense, but HC Mike Holmgren has been pleased with Branch's performance in practices. By October, Branch should be a viable fantasy starter, but he'll likely start seeing the field this weekend.

WR Antonio Bryant - SF - While the San Francisco offense focuses around Frank Gore, the passing game has also improved from 2005. Alex Smith looks far more comfortable this year and isn't making the endless stream of mistakes that plagued him last season. He and Bryant have already connected for 245 yards and a long 71-yard TD this season. With defenses looking to stop the running game, expect more deep strikes to Bryant.

WR Plaxico Burress - NYG - Burress can be a bit maddening because of his tendency to throw up 3-catch / 45-yard games. However, he can also be delightful because of his ability to post 100+ yard games with a TD or two. The nice thing about Burress so far this year is that he has been consistent (80 and 114 yards with a TD in each game). As long as the Giants' defense will give up a ton of points, Burress has to excel.

WR Laveranues Coles - NYJ - The Jets' passing game has excelled in 2006 as Chad Pennington finally looks healthy again. Coles has been fantastic so far this year - he already has two 100-yard games and posted a TD against the Patriots. With the running game in the not-so-able hands of Kevan Barlow, Coles and company will need to continue to perform at a high level. His schedule over the next 10 games looks fairly nice as well.

WR Marques Colston - NO - We took note of the week one TD, but a single score does not necessarily indicate a must-have WR. After two weeks (and two scores), Colston looks like he will be a factor all season. He leads all Saints' WRs in targets with 17 (Horn has 13) and is a big body around the goal line. In Yahoo! and ESPN public leagues, Colston qualifies as a TE. He is certainly a must-have in such a league.

WR Jerricho Cotchery - NYJ - As with Marques Colston, we were not overly impressed with Cotchery's week one performance. Sure, he caught a TD, but it was against the Titans. However, he exploded with 121 yards and a nice 71-TD against the Patriots. Cotchery is showing that he will be a force all season long.

WR Patrick Crayton - DAL - Crayton is simply a nice WR, but he's on the upgrade list because Terrell Owens will miss action. With Owens out 2-4 weeks with a broken hand, Crayton has an opportunity to fill his sizable void. In most leagues, Crayton will be on the waiver wire and will be a nice start for at least a game or two.

WR Donald Driver - GB - The season is only two games old, but Driver already has 21 targets, 15 receptions and 249 yards. Even without a TD, those numbers are good enough to make Driver a top ten fantasy WR. The Packers' schedule is very nice all season long as only Buffalo and Chicago (week 17 which doesn't count in many leagues) are tough on WRs.

WR Braylon Edwards - CLE - After last season's knee injury, Braylon is still probably rounding into game shape, but he has been very good so far this season. We're still waiting on a TD; but Edwards has 15 targets already, and we loved his 75-yard reception against the Bengals. Cleveland will rely upon Edwards heavily this year as their ground game is terrible.

WR Mike Furrey - DET - Furrey has been a solid WR over the first two weeks of the season. With a gaping hole at WR2, Furrey seems to be a viable option (especially in leagues awarding a point per reception. He has been targeted 15 times in two weeks and has 11 catches for 122 yards. Even better for Furrey is that the next few games are against lesser defenses.

WR Joey Galloway - TB - Galloway rebounded from a horrible week one to catch nine balls for 161 yards (on an enormous 17 targets). If the Buccaneers can ever figure out how to get into the endzone, Galloway would be even more appealing.

WR Terry Glenn - DAL - Glenn has been a nice WR already this season, but he'll get a boost over the next 2-4 weeks. With Terrell Owens sidelined, Glenn becomes Dallas' top receiving threat and an ever more appealing option.

WR Joe Horn - NO - HC Sean Payton called out Joe Horn after week one saying that the veteran needed to improve. Horn responded with five catches for 88 yards. That's not a huge game, but it's much nicer than the 2-catch 25-yard stinker he posted against the Browns. Joe Horn will be fine this year.

WR Chad Jackson - NE - With Deion Branch now in Seattle, the Patriots desperately need someone to produce at WR. Jackson has been ailing most of the offseason, but he was finally healthy enough to see the field against the Jets. He only saw three targets, but Jackson caught two of them for 42 yards and a TD. As the season wears on, expect Jackson to improve.

WR Darrell Jackson - SEA - He worried us all offseason with his health, but after two games of solid production (174 yards and a TD), we feel a lot better. As long as Jackson can stay upright, he is an excellent option. As a bonus, Deion Branch will soon be on the field to draw some coverage.

WR Andre Johnson - HOU - Some might discount Johnson's TD against the Colts because it was a garbage time play. Consider these two points: 1) Garbage plays count, and 2) The Texans will see plenty of garbage time all year long. The great thing about Johnson scoring in garbage time is that he (rather than someone like Edell Shepherd) was on the field.

WR Donte Stallworth - PHI - Wow. Stallworth could always throw up an occasional huge game, but he's two for two as an Eagle. He is working extremely well with Donovan McNabb and has turned Reggie Brown almost into an afterthought. We are definitely impressed.

WR Amani Toomer - NYG - It may be a surprise to everyone, but Toomer is getting more targets than Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey and Tiki Barber. Toomer put together a huge game against the Eagles with 12 catches for 137 yards and a pair of TDs. The Giants offense looks very nice, and Toomer should have good production all season long.

WR Troy Williamson - MIN - Williamson is definitely the top option in the Vikings passing game (his team-leading 16 targets are six more than the second-place Wiggins). Williamson has a couple of tough matchups in the next two weeks, but his schedule looks very nice after that. If he struggles against the Bears and Bills, he might be easy to pry away from a frustrated owner.

TE Desmond Clark - CHI - Clark currently leads all fantasy TEs with 10 receptions for 162 yards, one TD and 22 fantasy points. He has done this with a relatively low 13 targets. You should ride his production as long as he can keep it up.

TE Owen Daniels - HOU - Daniels easily out produced Jeb Putzier. He is a well-rounded player and could be a viable option for TE-starved teams.

TE L.J. Smith - PHI - The play of Donte Stallworth has opened up the field for Smith. The TE has seen 18 targets already this season. Smith leads all TEs with 13 catches and 167 yards and as long as he's healthy should excel all year long.

PK John Carney - NO - The Drew Brees led Saints' offense has been a nice surprise this season as they are giving Carney plenty of scoring opportunities. Carney has responded with zero misses on six FGs and five PATs.

PK Robbie Gould - CHI - The Bears' offense has been one of the biggest surprises in the league so far, and Gould's kicking has come along nicely. He is perfect on FGs and PATs (six of six on each).

PK Nate Kaeding - SD - The Chargers' offense is rolling and Kaeding is among the leaders in scoring with six FGs and seven PATs. He has not missed this season.

PK Matt Stover - BAL - Steve McNair behind center has made the Ravens a quality offensive unit. For his part, Stover is perfect on 11 kicks (six FGs and five PATs).

PK Mike Vanderjagt - DAL - HC Bill Parcells let Vanderjagt get on the field, and the kicker had a perfect night against the Redskins (two FGs and three PATs).

PK Adam Vinatieri - IND - Vinatieri scared us a bit late in the preseason with the rumors of a broken foot. However, he is now leading all PKs in scoring and is perfect on 13 kicks (seven FGs and six PATs). His groin tightness is a bit of a concern, but he should be fine.

TD Buffalo Bills - BUF - Buffalo's defense has performed very well this season. They have allowed only 25 points while accumulating 10 sacks and three forced turnovers.

TD San Diego Chargers - SD - The Chargers have benefited from a friendly opening schedule, but their defense has been excellent. They have allowed only seven points and 347 yards while forcing three turnovers and accumulating nine sacks.

TD Baltimore Ravens - BAL - The Ravens have been amazingly good this season. They have allowed only six points and 304 yards. They have nine sacks, forced nine turnovers (six INTs and three fumbles) even recorded a safety.

Downgrades

QB Tom Brady - NE - This is now a run-first offense. Brady is as good as they come, but unless he is needed he will continue to hand off to Dillon and Maroney. And a Branch-less WR corps does not scare anyone. We expect many average fantasy games until Chad Jackson and Doug Gabriel better learn the offense.

QB Aaron Brooks - OAK - His line is horrible giving him no time to throw. He now has a rotator cuff problem. He makes bad decisions. I think you get the point.

QB Marc Bulger - STL - This is not a Mike Martz offense anymore. With a balanced pass/rush attack, Bulger looks below average so far this year. We think the days of huge passing yards are over. Through 2 weeks, Bulger has posted just 402 yards and 1 TD.

QB Kerry Collins - TEN - I would like to know what bosses daughter Volek slept with, because Kerry Collins has been awful. His QB rating of 27.9 through two weeks says it all.

QB Jake Delhomme - CAR - This could end up just being the case of missing Steve Smith, but the numbers early for Delhomme are bad. He has only 367 yards and no TDs after two games. He is someone that should sit until Steve Smith shows he is recovered enough to stretch the field.

QB Jake Plummer - DEN - After two weeks, Jake is the 31st best fantasy QB. He has just 311 passing yards, no TDs while throwing 4 interceptions. With talented rookie Jay Cutler behind him, Jake is going to need to right the ship soon if he is to remain the starter.

QB Chris Simms - TB - He actually finished with 313 passing yards, but needed 53 attempts to get those yards. He also chucked 3 interceptions this week. The Tampa Bay running game is non-existent right now which makes the passing game predictable.

RB Chris Brown - TEN - He is still the most talented RB for the Titans (Vince Young is likely the best runner) but will not get many opportunities as the team plays from behind. He has had just 22 carries despite starting both games. As the losses mount, look for this team to play LenDale White more as well.

RB Reuben Droughns - CLE - This offense is bad. After two weeks he has just 59 yards on 25 carries. He could have a short leash going forward (although we doubt any Cleveland RB will fair well playing behind this offensive line right now).

RB T.J. Duckett - WAS - Clinton Portis did not play and Duckett still did not see the field. This does not bode well for his future value.

RB DeShaun Foster - CAR - He is being outplayed by DeAngelo Williams. With the team 0-2, Foster could see even less carries going forward unless he can start producing.

RB Cedric Houston - NYJ - He has zero value right now.

RB LaMont Jordan - OAK - When your coach does not throw to the RB and you play on a team that is usually behind by multiple TDs, your value is very limited. Add to that playing behind an offensive line that is overmatched and you are hating life. Jordan has just 55 yards on 29 carries.

RB Wali Lundy - HOU - His tenure as the starter seems over. Samkon Gado was brought in to lead this offense. Even Ron Dayne might surpass the rookie in the RB pecking order for now. Lundy might be the future, but he takes a giant step backwards for now.

RB Vernand Morency - GB - The Packers have announced that they will use him as the third down back. His best chance of starting was replacing the inexperienced Lundy in Houston. Now with the packers, his worth is minimal.

RB Clinton Portis - WAS - Well now we know what happens if you don't practice. You sit. We think Portis will be battling this shoulder injury all season. Rest isn't what he needs. He needs surgery.

RB Cadillac Williams - TB - Must be a used Cadillac, because this one's broken down. Between back spasms and no running lanes, "Carnell" is struggling badly here. He has just 59 rushing yards on 23 carries. The Bucs get another tough defense this week against Carolina.

WR Hank Baskett - PHI - Baskett was a favorite sleeper for many before Donte Stallworth was brought in. With the new guy hogging all the fun, Baskett has seen only two targets this season. He has become a nobody.

WR Reggie Brown - PHI - All offseason, we were told the Brown was ready to be the team's primary WR - then the Eagles traded for Donte Stallworth. That move made Brown a poor #2 WR. With L.J. Smith and Brian Westbrook on the field, Brown is now the fourth option. Fantasy games aren't won with fourth options.

WR Nate Burleson - SEA - When Seattle was first rumored to be interested in bringing in Deion Branch, conventional wisdom was the Darrell Jackson wasn't healthy. After seeing Jackson excel for two weeks, it's apparent that Branch is being added to replace Burleson. The former Viking had every opportunity to be the #2 WR for Seattle, but with Bobby Engram entrenched as the slot, Burleson has sunk to reserve status.

WR Kevin Curtis - STL - While he got a few more targets in week two, there simply isn't enough passing offense to go around to make Curtis a viable fantasy option.

WR D.J. Hackett - SEA - With Deion Branch coming to Seattle, whatever value Hackett had is gone.

WR Torry Holt - STL - Yes, Holt caught five passes; and yes, he scored a TD. That's nice and all, but he totaled a paltry 30 yards. Considering he was facing the 49ers, Holt had a disappointing day. His production so far is a reminder that Mike Martz is gone.

WR Brandon Lloyd - WAS - The arrival of Lloyd in Washington has been a complete flop. Mark Brunell has targeted him six times, but Lloyd has a single catch for six yards - simply horrible.

WR Randy Moss - OAK - As you know, Oakland's offense has been horrid this year. Aaron Brooks will miss two to four weeks with an injured shoulder, but Andrew Walter has looked just as bad. The offensive line isn't blocking at all, and Moss appears to be dogging it often. Two words apply here - "ugh" and "lee".

WR Terrell Owens - DAL - Owens is playing well, but he gets a downtick due to his broken hand. He'll miss two to four weeks.

WR Jerry Porter - OAK - Considering how horrible the Raiders' offense has been, Porter must be completely encased in the doghouse to continue to be inactive each week. As a Raider, he has no value.

WR Steve Smith - CAR - On one hand, it's good that he isn't rushing back to the field, but we're beginning to worry that Smith's hamstring will dog him all season long.

WR Roddy White - ATL - White has been nicked up a couple of times already this season. What's worse is that Michael Jenkins and Ashley Lelie are more involved in the offense. There is barely enough passing game for one WR in Atlanta, so White as a WR3 isn't going to cut it.

TE Chris Cooley - WAS - While he was targeted six times on the night, Cooley was held without a catch against the Cowboys. That performance on the heels of a three-catch 20-yard day in week one takes him off the must-start list. Until the Washington offense gets things moving, Cooley should ride the pine.

TE Jeb Putzier - HOU - Since he worked with HC Gary Kubiak in Denver, Putzier looked like a nice sleeper candidate this season. However, he has only five targets this season (only one in week two) and was vastly out produced by Owen Daniels against the Colts. It's time to cut bait on Putzier.

TE Tony Scheffler - DEN - Scheffler has been a disappointment so far this year. After a nice preseason, he has stumbled out of the gate and has only a single catch for nine yards. What's worse is that he has only six targets (fellow TE Stephen Alexander has seven). The whole Denver offense has been funky this season, but it's hard to like a TE that is sharing time.

TE Ben Troupe - TEN - This team struggles on offense, yet Troupe barely sniffs the ball. With a single catch thus far this season, Troupe has sorely disappointed and does not merit a start. If things continue, he soon may not merit a roster spot.

PK Josh Brown - SEA - Brown has struggled mightily this year and already has missed three FGs (on only six attempts). His scoring is OK because the Seattle offense is so good, but those misses are brutal.

PK Matt Bryant - TB - The Buccaneers offense has been unable to find the endzone, but Bryant has picked up the slack by hitting one of three FG attempts. There are tons of better PK options out there.

PK Jason Hanson - DET - The Lions have struggled on offense, and so has Hanson. He is only two for four on FGs thus far this season.

PK Michael Koenen - ATL - Koenen had zero makes out of four attempts against the Buccaneers. Is there anything else to add? Oh, he's two for eight on the season.

PK Mike Nugent - NYJ - Nugent is struggling this season (two missed FGs and even a missed PAT). The Jets auditioned a handful of free agents last week. If Nugent doesn't improve, he could soon be unemployed.

TD Cleveland Browns - CLE - The Browns defense was supposed to be improved this year, but they aren't stopping anyone (they've allowed over 300 rushing yards in two games).

TD Philadelphia Eagles - PHI - The Eagles are still a nice fantasy option (13 sacks but only one forced turnover), but they absolutely collapsed against the Giants. They get the downtick because Jevon Kearse has been lost for the remainder of the season with an injured knee.

TD Oakland Raiders - OAK - The Raiders aren't a horrible defense, but the Oakland offense gives them no relief. Unless a miracle occurs soon, this entire squad will be demoralized.

TD Washington Redskins - WAS - While the special teams unit did return a kickoff for a TD, the Redskins defense was very flat against the Cowboys. They registered only one sack against the stiff Drew Bledsoe and forced a single turnover. They have a nice matchup this week against the Texans, but there are good offenses in this division and throughout Washington's schedule.

TD Houston Texans - HOU - While watching the Houston defense attempt to defense Peyton Manning, we got the impression the Colts could have scored points during halftime. In leagues that deduct points for yards and points allowed, the Texans should never get off the waiver wire.

TD Tennessee Titans - TEN - The Titans' defense is at best below average. However, their offense is so horrible that the defense can't stay on the bench.
