The Preseason Dark Phoenix #2

It was another great week of NFL preseason football. This is the Dark Phoenix, where we take a look at the deep sleepers that you need to know. In this week's edition we are breaking down a QB that could become the starter in Big D, a RB that could end up as the top back in Houston, a WR that is making a name for himself in Green Bay, and a WR that is looking for more playing time in Baltimore.

Tony Romo - QB2 - Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo was a man among boys in college at Eastern Illinois. He won the Walter Payton Award, given to the most valuable player in I-AA football. He was a three year starter that was named Ohio Valley Conference Offensive player of the year twice.

Romo is a very smart QB that understands the game. He has a quick release, and is very accurate. He can move around behind the line of scrimmage effectively, buying time while looking downfield. He does have good arm strength, and when throwing deep he leads his receivers effectively.

Tony has been hanging around with the Cowboys team for awhile now. He enters his 4th season and is surprisingly being mentioned as a possible starter over Drew Bledsoe. The Cowboys are concerned that Drew is a fast starter, but a liability at the end of the season. Romo has been getting an extensive look so far in the preseason, and the Cowboys are liking what they've seen from him so far. If you draft Bledsoe, then a Romo handcuff doesn't seem too far fetched. This is a situation to watch closely during the rest of the season.

Vernand Morency - RB2 - Houston Texans

Vernand Morency only had one season as a full time starter at Oklahoma State. He spent times with the Colorado Rockies farm system before entering OSU, so he is a bit older than most 2nd year RBs. After backing up Tatum Bell in 2003, he got his chance to shine in 2004 and did not disappoint. He rushed for almost 1,500 yards and was certainly noticed by NFL scouts.

Morency runs with a lot of power. He is always moving forward after initial contact, and does a good job of running through arm tackles. He has a quick initial burst and can get to the 2nd level of the defense in a hurry. He runs with a good pad level, and can break some long runs.

With Domanick Davis being hurt (again!), the RB job is wide open in Houston. Vernand has been banged up a little during his time in the NFL, but he is clearly the most talented backup. If healthy, Morency would easily be the main back in Houston with Davis hurt. Morency is so talented that if he did a good enough job, Davis may be relegated to a change of pace back whenever he returns from injury. Vernand is a player to target late in your draft, as a RB that may be under the radar for now, but not for long.

Greg Jennings - WR3 - Green Bay Packers

Greg Jennings was a big time playmaker at Western Michigan. The Broncos are known to move the ball up and down the field effectively in the passing game, and Jennings teamed with Tony Scheffler to form a deadly receiving duo. Jennings led the team in receiving each year, and earned All-Conference honors his last three years on campus. In addition to being a great receiver, Jennings also returned punts and kicks.

Jennings has a tremendous work ethic, and is already showing the presence of a veteran in Green Bay. He has great hands, and his technique for catching the ball is textbook. He is very explosive off the line of scrimmage, and is very quick in and out of breaks. Greg is very dangerous after the catch, and is extremely hard to tackle in the open field. He does a good job of setting up defenders, and knows how to open his body up to the pass, giving his QB a nice target to throw to.

Greg Jennings is already making a name for himself in the NFL. Currently he is 2nd in receiving yards so far in the preseason. His maturity has pleased not only the coaching staff, but the veterans on this squad as well. Donald Driver is clearly the #1 in Green Bay, but Jennings could find himself in the 2 spot if he continues to play well. He can be a very effective #3 slot receiver with his athletic ability. Jennings is certainly a player that bares watching.

Devard Darling - WR3 - Baltimore Ravens

Devard Darling originally started his college career at Florida State. His Seminole career ended in tragedy when his twin brother Devaughn died in an offseason conditioning program. He sat out his first year at Washington State, but the next year he absolutely shined. He had over 1,600 yards receiving, and 18 TDs in his first and only season as a starter for the Cougars.

Darling has good size and knows how to use his frame to shield defenders away from the ball. He adjusts well to poorly thrown passes, and can make the amazing catch seem easy. He is quick off the line and has good deep speed. He catches the ball at the highest point with his arms extended.

Devard has been working hard on improving his skill set since entering the league in 2003. He was a very raw receiver that many deemed as a project. Well, this project is now paying dividends for the Ravens, and he could continue to do so during the regular season. Derrick Mason, and Mark Clayton are the #1 and #2 in Baltimore, but Darling could prove to be the deep threat and red zone receiver that Baltimore always thought he could be.
