Arizona at Atlanta
Time of Possession: Atlanta 31:26, Arizona 28:34
Total Plays: Atlanta 64, Arizona 57
Atlanta's offense got back on track after Monday nights loss to New Orleans,
rushing for 262 yards while their defense limited the Cardinals to just 187
total yards. The Falcons came into the game with the leagues 8th ranked run
defense and that should improve after holding Arizona to 31 yards on the ground.
The Cards have now lost four straight overall against the Falcons and four straight
on Atlanta's home turf. Michael Vick has out-rushed Edgerrin James 333 to 272
through four games. Coming into the contest, Arizona QB Kurt Warner had eaten
up the Falcons with a 6-0 career record, throwing for at least 275 yards and
3 TDs in five of those six games. He finished Sunday with 128 passing yards,
0 TD, 1 INT and 2 fumbles before being pulled late for Matt Leinart.
ATL DE John Abraham was once again inactive (groin), replaced in the starting
lineup by Chauncey Davis (2 solo tackles). There's speculation that Abraham
will not return until October 15th.
ATL MLB Ed Hartwell (knee) continues to nurse a knee injury. He was also inactive,
allowing Demorrio Williams to remain in the starting lineup.
The Good
- ARI MLB Gerald Hayes: 8 tackles (6 solo)
- ARI DT Kendrick Clancy: 6 tackles (5 solo). Clancy has recorded 4 or more
solo tackles in three straight games
- ARI SS Adrian Wilson: 5 tackles (4 solo) 99 yard INT-TD. He's picked up
2 sacks and 2 INT in four games
- ATL CB DeAngelo Hall: 2 solo tackles, INT, 2 PD. 37 yard INT-TD
- ATL WLB Demorrio Williams: 10 tackles (7 solo). 7 solos in each of last
two games
- ATL SS Lawyer Milloy: 5 solo tackles. He's picked up 5 or more solos in
3 of 4 games this year
- ATL SLB Michael Boley: 7 solo tackles, sack, INT, 2 PD, FF. Nice all-around
game for Boley, he also tipped the ball that D. Hall intercepted
- ATL DE Patrick Kerney: 4 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 2 QH, FF. Kerney had been
quiet this year with just 1 solo tackle and 0 sacks through the first three
games. Atlanta is now 7-1 all-time when he records multiple sacks. During
his last matchup v. ARI (2004), he set a career high with 3 sacks (matched
this week)
The Bad
- ARI DE Bert Berry: 2 solo tackles. Still looking for his first sack this
year
- ARI WLB Orlando Huff: 2 solo tackles. 11 solos in four games
- ARI SLB Calvin Pace: 3 solo tackles. 9 solos and 0 sacks in four games
- ARI FS Robert Griffith: 2 solo tackles. Certainly not the playmaker that
he used to be. 13 solos in four games, nothing else
- ATL MLB Keith Brooking: 4 tackles (2 solo)
- ATL FS Chris Crocker: 3 tackles (2 solo). 10 solos in four games
The Ugly
- ATL CB J.Webster, Defensive Pass Interference, 5 yards
- ARZ CB E.Green, Illegal Contact, 4 yards
- ARZ CB E.Green, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- ATL DT D.Shropshire, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards
- ATL S K.Mathis, Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards
Dallas at Tennessee
Time of Possession: Dallas 32:34, Tennessee 27:26
Total Plays: Dallas 61, Tennessee 58
The return of Terrell Owens was overshadowed by Terry Glenn's two TD receptions
and the Dallas Cowboys' 217 rushing yards (TEN defense came in ranked 30th against
the run, allowing 163.7 per game). If T.O. was depressed, this 45-14 victory
should go a long way in brightening the spirits in Dallas, although he did drop
a TD pass with his broken hand. Tennessee has now lost seven straight games,
going back to last year, their worst start since beginning the 1984 season 0-10.
Kerry Collins, benched in favor of Vince Young, is 8-3 in his career v. DAL
(17 TD, 9 INT).
DAL rookie LB Bobby Carpenter was inactive, as he has been in two of the Cowboys
three games this year.
TEN DT Robaire Smith (5 tackles, 2 solo) was questionable with a hamstring
injury. He did play, but Randy Starks (1 solo tackle) started in his place.
The Good
- DAL ILB Bradie James: 5 tackles (2 solo), INT, PD, FF. 15 yard INT-TD. Not
all is good as James has picked up just 3 solo tackles over the last two games
- DAL OLB Greg Ellis: 5 solo tackles
- DAL LB Kevin Burnett: 4 tackles (2 solo), sack, QH
- DAL DE Chris Canty: 3 solo tackles, sack, QH
- TEN SS Chris Hope: 10 tackles (8 solo), INT, PD. 33 solo tackles in four
games
- TEN DE Kyle Vanden Bosch: 4 tackles (1 solo), 4 QH. Close, but no cigar.
KVB has 14.5 sacks in his last 19 games
- TEN SLB David Thornton: 6 solo tackles. 23 solos in four games
The Bad
- DAL OLB DeMarcus Ware: 3 solo tackles, 2 QH, PD. Ware finished the 2005
season with 4 sacks in the last two games. Thus far, he's recorded just one
in three games
- TEN DT Albert Haynesworth: 3 solo tackles, ejected from the game after stomped
on DAL C Andre Gurode's face. A suspension may be on the way, along with a
hefty fine.
- TEN CB Pacman Jones: 2 solo tackles, PD. 5 solo tackles over the last three
games
- TEN MLB Peter Sirmon: 5 tackles (3 solo). Sirmon has picked up 5 or more
solo just once (week 2)
- TEN FS Lamont Thompson: 7 tackles (5 solo). Thompson has been reported to
be on the hot seat
The Ugly
- DAL OLB D.Ware, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- TEN CB A.Jones, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- TEN DE K.Vanden Bosch, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards
- TEN DT A.Haynesworth, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards
- TEN DT A.Haynesworth, Disqualification, 15 yards
- DAL CB T.Newman, Defensive Pass Interference, 36 yards
Indianapolis at New York Jets
Time of Possession: NY Jets 31:57, Indianapolis 28:03
Total Plays: Indianapolis 68, NY Jets 63
After losing by just 3 points, the Jets' 3rd quarter decision to go for it
on fourth down at the 2 yard line will be widely debated (a Pennington INT).
Neither of these teams has stopped the run all that well this year, and it showed
(135 for NYJ, 160 for IND), but it was New York's pass defense who stepped up
and made this game close. Coming in with the leagues 27th ranked pass defense,
Payton Manning was held in check for three quarters. Unfortunately they couldn't
hold on and the Colts moved the ball when it mattered most. With the victory,
the Manning-led Colts are just 3-3 when to travel to New York to face the Jets.
The Colts secondary is a M*A*S*H unit with FS Bob Sanders, CB Marlin Jackson
and CB Nick Harper all being inactive this game. Antoine Bethea (6 tackles,
4 solo) continued to fill in for Sanders while Kelvin Hayden (8 tackles, 5 solo,
PD) started at cornerback.
IND DT Corey Simon was inactive with a knee injury and is unlikely to play
next week. He's yet to see the field this year.
NYJ SS Kerry Rhodes was questionable with a thigh injury, but he started.
NYJ CB David Barrett was inactive with a thigh injury, allowing Justin Miller
to start.
The Jets opened up in a 3-CB formation with Derrick Strait (1 solo tackles)
starting in place of Erik Coleman (3 assists, PD). This was possibly to match
Indy's 2-TE opening set.
As they have in each game, the Jets opened with a 4-3 front.
The Good
- NYJ CB Justin Miller: 9 solo tackles, PD, 103 yard KO-TD
- NYJ OLB Eric Barton: 11 tackles (8 solo). 25 solo tackles in four games
- NYJ DE Shaun Ellis: 5 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 QH. Ellis had been on a stretch
of 10 games without a sack
- NYJ ILB Jon Vilma: 11 tackles (6 solo). 24 solo tackles in four games, 0
sack/INT
- NYJ CB Andre Dyson: 5 solo tackles. Five or more solos in 3 games this year
- IND WLB Cato June: 13 tackles (10 solo). 27 solos in four games, his 2nd
career 10+ solo tackle performance
- IND MLB Gary Brackett: 13 tackles (9 solo), 30 solo tackles in four games
- IND DE Robert Mathis: 3 solo tackles, 2 sacks, QH, FF
The Bad
- NYJ SS Kerry Rhodes: 5 tackles (3 solo), PD. Rhodes had been on fire to
open the year
- IND DE Dwight Freeney: 3 solo tackle, QH. Four solo tackles and 0 sacks
this year
The Ugly
- IND DE R.Mathis, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- IND DE R.Mathis, Defensive Offside, declined
- IND DE R.Mathis, Unnecessary Roughness, 7 yards
- IND S A.Bethea, Defensive Pass Interference, 2 yards
- IND S M.Doss, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- NYJ CB J.Miller, Defensive Pass Interference, 22 yards
Miami at Houston
Time of Possession: Houston 33:55, Miami 26:05
Total Plays: Houston 67, Miami 58
The Houston Texans came into this game next to last in Time of Possession (35:25),
last in overall defense (483.7), last versus the pass (320.7) and last in scoring
(32.7). Nothing cures the blues like a game against Miami. This Miami Dolphin
offense has been downright ugly, yet to get on track and, with back to back
disappointments against Tennessee and Houston, it's tough to see them pulling
out of their funk. Entering the game with just three sacks in three games, the
Texans got to Daunte Culpepper five times.
The Dolphins opened up in a nickel with CB Andre Goodman (1 solo tackle) replacing
SLB Donnie Spragan. This was to match the Texans 3-WR opening set.
MIA CB Travis Daniels (2 assists) returned to the starting lineup after missing
the past two games with an ankle injury.
HOU CB DeMarcus Faggins (foot) and DE Antwan Peek (groin) were both inactive.
The Good
- MIA MLB Zach Thomas: 12 tackles (11 solo). 27 solos in four games
- MIA WLB Channing Crowder: 9 tackles (5 solo). Crowder may be waking up with
11 solos over two weeks
- MIA CB Will Allen: 8 solo tackles, sack, QH, INT, 3 PD
- MIA DT Vonnie Holliday: 7 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 4 QH
- HOU MLB DeMeco Ryans: 8 tackles (7 solo), ½ sack, QH. 33 solos in
four games
- HOU SS Glenn Earl: 6 solo tackles, sack, QH. 20 solo tackles over the last
three games
- HOU CB Dunta Robinson: 6 solo tackles, PD. 27 solos in four games. Set career
high in week 3 with 11
- HOU DE Mario Williams: 2 tackles (1 solo), 1.5 sacks, 2 QH. Finally recorded
his first career sack
The Bad
- MIA SLB Donnie Spragan: 1 solo tackle. 7 solos in four games
- MIA FS Renaldo Hill: 2 solo tackles
- HOU WLB Morlon Greenwood: 4 solo tackles
- HOU FS C.C.Brown: 3 tackles (2 solo)
The Ugly
- MIA LB Z.Thomas, Tripping, 10 yards
Minnesota at Buffalo
Time of Possession: Buffalo 35:57, Minnesota 24:03
Total Plays: Buffalo 68, Minnesota 60
The Buffalo Bills came in trying to snap a four game home losing streak and
did just that, holding the Vikings to just 63 yards on the ground and 12 points.
Minnesota has held each of their opponents this year under 20 points, after
averaging 21.5 points allowed in 2005, but they've scored just three TDs themselves
in four games.
MIN SLB Ben Leber, inactive with a knee injury, was replaced in the starting
lineup by Dontarrious Thomas (3 tackles, 2 solo).
MIN CB Fred Smoot returned to the starting lineup this week after being disciplined
by the team in week three (did not start).
BUF SLB Takeo Spikes was once again inactive with a hamstring injury. Keith
Ellison (2 solo tackles) is starting while Spikes is out.
BUF Matt Bowen (shin) was also inactive.
The Good
- MIN CB Antoine Winfield: 11 tackles (7 solo). Nice output in his first game
against his former club
- MIN DE Darrion Scott: 9 tackles (6 solo), ½ sack, PD
- MIN DT Kevin Williams: 8 tackles (7 solo), sack, QH, PD

- BUF CB Nate Clements: 5 solo tackles, 3 PD, FF. Clements appears to be getting
on track with 5 solos in each of the past two games
- BUF CB Terrence McGee: 5 solo tackles
The Bad
- MIN DE Kenechi Udeze: 2 tackles (1 solo). 3 solo tackles and 0 sacks in
four games
- MIN SS Darren Sharper: 5 tackles (3 solo). Sharper had either a sack or
pick in each of three career games v. BUF
- BUF DE Aaron Schobel: 4 tackles (2 solo), QH. 3 solo tackles, 1 sack in

New Orleans at Carolina
Time of Possession: Carolina 30:21, New Orleans 29:39
Total Plays: New Orleans 62, Carolina 59
New Orleans came into this game off of a very emotional Monday Night victory
and it was expected that we may see a letdown. Although, as one of leagues remaining
undefeated teams, a win would cement them as a team to be reckoned with. The
teams seemed to change uniforms as New Orleans entered the game having allowed
just 265 yards rushing through three games (gave up 167 to CAR) and the Panthers
were allowing 152 per game to start the year (New Orleans was held to 63). A
great sign for a Carolina run D that finished last year ranked 4th (91.6). Carolina
finished 2005 with a +16 turnover ratio while New Orleans finished at -24 (tied
with GB for leagues worst). After week 4, the teams stand at CAR (-3) and NO
(-1). Uncharacteristically, the Panthers are among the leagues worst in Time
of Possession with their defense on the field over 31 minutes per game.
CAR rookie CB Richard Marshall started ahead of Ken Lucas (2 solo tackles),
who played but is dealing with a sore neck.
CAR MLB Dan Morgan is still inactive with a concussion. Chris Draft started
in the middle with Na'il Diggs (6 tackles, 4 solo) on the weakside.
CAR SS Shaun Williams was inactive with a foot injury, replaced by Colin Branch
(5 solo tackles) in the starting lineup.
New Orleans opened in a dime defense with DBs Jason Craft (1 assist) and Omar
Stoutmire (2 solo tackles) starting in place of WLB Scott Shanle and MLB Mark
Simoneau. Scott Fujita was the lone linebacker. This was to match Carolina's
3-WR set.
The Good
- NO CB Fred Thomas: 12 solo tackles
- NO WLB Scott Shanle: 5 tackles (4 solo), sack, QH
- NO MLB Mark Simoneau: 8 tackles (6 solo)
- CAR CB Richard Marshall: 9 solo tackles, PD, FR
- CAR CB Chris Gamble: 7 tackles (6 solo), PD
- CAR MLB Chris Draft: 7 tackles (5 solo)
- CAR DE Julius Peppers: 4 solo tackles, sack, PD, FF. Peppers is off to the
best start of his career with 5 sacks in four games
The Bad
- NO DE Will Smith: 3 tackles (1 solo), PD. Smith had recorded a sack in each
of the first three games
- NO SLB Scott Fujita: 2 tackles (1 solo), PD
- NO DE Charles Grant: 1 solo tackle
- CAR DE Mike Rucker: 1 assist. 0 sacks in four games
- CAR DT Kris Jenkins: 1 solo tackle
- CAR FS Mike Minter: 2 solo tackles
The Ugly
- CAR DT D.Lewis, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- CAR DE J.Peppers, Personal Foul, 15 yards
- CAR CB K.Lucas, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- CAR LB T.Davis, Defensive Pass Interference, 4 yards
- NO CB F.Thomas, Face Mask (5 Yards), 5 yards
San Diego at Baltimore
Time of Possession: San Diego 33:42, Baltimore 26:18
Total Plays: San Diego 65, Baltimore 53
This battle of the leagues top two ranked defenses lived up to its billing,
with each team posting under 300 total yards, but it was the Chargers' running
game that stood out with 150 yards against a Ravens team allowing 34.3 per game
through three. Baltimore lost the turnover battle 3-1, winning a game in which
they've done so for only the 5th time in 43 tries. San Diego had not allowed
a sack on the season until the last play of the game. They've given up 23 points
in 3 games while Baltimore has allowed 33 in four games. Bad sign for the Chargers
as they blew 4 4th quarter leads in 2005. The Ravens are 4-0 for the first time
in team history.
SD SS Terrance Kiel was inactive after being arrested earlier in the week.
He was replaced in the lineup by Clinton Hart (4 tackles, 1 solo).
The Ravens opened the game with five defensive linemen. DT Justin Bannan (4
tackles, 3 solo, FF) joined the front four while SS Dawan Landry (5 tackles,
4 solo) started on the sidelines.
The Good
- SD OLB Shaun Phillips: 7 solo tackles, sack, FF, FR
- SD ILB Donnie Edwards: 6 tackles (5 solo), INT, PD, QH, FR
- BAL OLB Bart Scott: 15 tackles (11 solo), INT, PD. 24 solo tackles, 5 sacks
and 1 INT in four games. Scott had recorded just four sacks in his previous
four seasons
combined
- BAL MLB Ray Lewis: 14 tackles (10 solo). 26 solos in four games
- BAL DT Kelly Gregg: 8 tackles (5 solo)
- BAL OLB Adalius Thomas: 5 solo tackles
The Bad
- SD FS Marlon McCree: 2 solo tackles. 3 solos in three games
- BAL DE Terrell Suggs: 1 solo tackle
- BAL DE Trevor Pryce: 2 tackles (1 solo)
- BAL CB Samari Rolle: 2 tackles (1 solo), PD
The Ugly
- SD LB S.Cooper, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards
- SD S M.McCree, Defensive Holding, declined
- SD LB S.Phillips, Defensive Holding, 5 yards
San Francisco at Kansas City
Time of Possession: Kansas City 35:15, San Francisco 24:45
Total Plays: Kansas City 63, San Francisco 51
Arrowhead Stadium is tough on opponents, whether the Chiefs are playing good
or not. It just so happens that they were playing very good on Sunday, making
the San Francisco 49ers look more like the team of 2005 (league low 224.2 yards
per game) than the team who had averaged 381.7 yards of offense to open this
season. All around domination by the Chiefs, from Damon Huard's 133.3 QB rating
to the five sacks that KC posted ('Niners had given up just four in previous
three games). Alex Smith was held to just 92 yards passing after throwing for
no less than 233 during the first three games. In week 2 the Chiefs became the
first team in 45 years to hold the Broncos scoreless in the first half at home
and their shut out of the 49ers marks only the second time since 1977 that SF
has been blanked, the worst shut out in their team history. San Francisco has
now lost eight straight road games v. AFC.
KC DE Jared Allen was arrested on a DUI charge earlier in the week, but he
started the game. It was reported as his second DUI, so he may find himself
in hot water with the league at some point.
The 49ers opened in a base 4-3 with Bryant Young (4 solo tackles) and Marques
Douglass (6 solo tackles) on the ends. Brandon Moore (5 solo tackles) started
at OLB with Manny Lawson (2 solo tackles, PD) coming off of the bench.
The Good
- SF CB Shawntae Spencer: 8 solo tackles
- SF MLB Derek Smith: 7 tackles (6 solo). Only his second game this year with
4+ solo tackles
- KC WLB Derrick Johnson: 9 tackles (7 solo), 1.5 sacks, 2 QH, PD, FF. Is
this what all of the hype was about?
- KC CB Ty Law; 5 solo tackles, INT, PD
- KC DE Tamba Hali: 3 tackles (2 solo), 1.5 sacks, FF. 1st sack of NFL career
The Bad
- SF CB Walt Harris: 1 solo tackle
- SF SS Tony Parrish: 1 solo tackle. 9 solos in four games
- KC DE Jared Allen: 1 solo tackle, FR
- KC CB Patrick Surtain: 2 solo tackles
- KC MLB Kawika Mitchell: 5 tackles (3 solo), sack, QH. The sack was good,
11 solo tackles in three games are not
- KC FS Greg Wesley: 1 solo tackle, sack, QH. His sack was also nice, but
8 solo tackles in three weeks won't cut it
The Ugly
- KC DE J.Allen, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- SF DL B.Young, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards
- SF CB S.Spencer, Defensive Pass Interference, 18 yards
- KC DE T.Hali, Defensive Offside, declined
- KC LB K.Mitchell, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards
- SF LB J.Ulbrich, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards
- SF DL M.Oliver, Offensive Holding, 10 yards
Detroit at St. Louis
Time of Possession: St. Louis 30:06, Detroit 29:54
Total Plays: St. Louis 70, Detroit 66
A good ol' Mike Martz shoot out. You hear the term "The last team who
has the ball
" and it really felt that way in this game. Unfortunately
for the Lions, the clock ran out before they could score again. Detroit came
into this game with the leagues 6th ranked run defense but allowed 106 to the
Rams (81 by Steven Jackson). They are still far better off that they were a
year ago when they finished with the 24th ranked run D (127.5). The Lions did
get their running game going with 93 yards after averaging just 63 per game
during the first three. The last time that Detroit started 0-4 was in 2001 when
they lost their first 12 on the way to a 2-14 record. STL DT La'Roi Glover and
DET QB Jon Kitna were teammates on the 1997 NFL Europe Champion Barcelona Dragons.
STL WR Isaac Bruce moved into 10th place on the all-time list with 833 receptions.
STL WR Torry Holt (6-102-1) v. DET S Terrence Holt (0 tackles): looks like
the older brother got the better of this one.
STL DE Tony Hargrove (0 tackles) was inactive last week after missing a couple
of practices for personal reasons. Now, he's been demoted. Victor Adeyanju (4
solo tackles) is now the starter.
DET S Kenoy Kennedy was inactive with a foot injury, replaced in the starting
lineup by rookie Daniel Bullocks.
DET CB Fernando Bryant was questionable with an ankle injury, but he was made
inactive and replaced by Jamar Fletcher.
DET LB Alex Lewis was also inactive with a knee injury. Boss Bailey was at
MLB for the Lions while Paris Lenon started on the strongside.
DET UT Shaun Rogers (2 tackles, 1 solo, QH) was questionable with a knee injury,
but he started the game.
The Good
- DET CB Jamar Fletcher: 9 solo tackles. 14 solos over the past two weeks
- DET WLB Ernie Sims: 8 tackles (7 solo). He's picked up 7 solo tackles in
three of four games
- DET SS Daniel Bullocks: 8 tackles (6 solo), PD
- DET SLB Paris Lenon: 6 solo tackles
- STL MLB Will Witherspoon: 8 solo tackles, PD. 30 solo tackles in four games
- STL SS Corey Chavous: 8 solo tackles, PD
- STL CB Fakhir Brown: 7 tackles (6 solo)
- STL CB Travis Fisher: 6 solo tackles
- STL DE Leonard Little: 2 solo tackles, sack, 4 QH. Rams are 34-18 when Little
picks up at least a ½ sack
The Bad
- DET MLB Boss Bailey: 2 solo tackles. Bailey really doesn't give much to
the boxscore
- DET DE James Hall: 2 solo tackles. 8 solo tackles without a sack since opening
the year with 3 sacks
- STL SLB Brandon Chillar: 1 solo tackle
The Ugly
- DET LB A.Cannon, Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- SL DT J.Kennedy, Encroachment, 5 yards
- SL LB B.Chillar, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- DET DE J.Hall, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards
- DET DT S.Rogers, Encroachment, 5 yards
- SL DE L.Little, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards
- SL DE L.Little, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 8 yards
- SL DE T.Hargrove, Defensive Offside, offsetting
- SL S O.Atogwe, Offensive Holding, 8 yards
- DET CB J.Fletcher, Defensive Pass Interference, 40 yards
- DET CB D.Bly, Illegal Contact, declined
- SL CB F.Brown, Defensive Holding, declined
- DET DT S.Cody, Defensive Offside, declined
Cleveland at Oakland
Time of Possession: Cleveland 37:05, Oakland 22:54
Total Plays: Cleveland 69, Oakland 52
The battle of the beaten
someone has to win. When each of these teams
looked at their respective schedules, they both have this game circled as one
that they actually have a shot to win. Unfortunately for the Raiders, there
are no more circles. While neither team racked up the yards on Sunday (both
finished with under 300 total yards) it was the Raiders pass offense that stood
out (43 net yards passing). Unhelpful to that total were four sacks by Cleveland,
raising the total to 19 sacks allowed in three games for the Raiders. Oakland
has lost nine straight going back to last year. CLE QB Charlie Frye (3rd round
#3) and OAK QB Andrew Walter (3rd round #5) were selected 2 spots apart in the
2005 draft. Walter played the entire game and compiled a 43.6 QB rating. Ronald
Curry threw one incomplete pass and had a 39.6 rating.
CLE rookie OLB Kamerion Wimbley got the start this week ahead of Matt Stewart.
CLE CB Daven Holly (2 solo tackles) started his second straight game in place
of Gary Baxter. Baxter was inactive with a pectoral injury.
CLE OLB Willie McGinest (calf) and DE Orpheus Roye (shoulder) were both questionable
both
started.
OAK SLB Sam Williams was questionable with an ankle injury and also started.
The Good
- CLE ILB Andra Davis: 7 solo tackles, sack, QH
- CLE SS Sean Jones: 6 tackles (4 solo), INT, 2 PD
- CLE OLB Kamerion Wimbley: 3 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 QH
- OAK FS Stuart Schweigert: 10 tackles (9 solo). 21 solo tackles in three
games
- OAK MLB Kirk Morrison: 9 tackles (7 solo). 18 solo tackles in three games
- OAK DE Derrick Burgess: 5 tackles (4 solo), 2 sacks, 3 QH. Last years NFL
sack leader records his first two of the season

- OAK SLB Sam Williams: 3 solo tackles, 30 yard FR-TD
- OAK WLB Thomas Howard: 6 solo tackles. 21 solo tackles in three games
The Bad
- CLE ILB D'Qwell Jackson: 2 solo tackles. 6 solos over the last three games
- CLE OLB Willie McGinest: 2 solo tackles
- CLE FS Brian Russell: 2 tackles (1 solo), PD
- OAK DE Tyler Brayton: 3 solo tackles, FF. He's still looking for his first
sack of 2006
The Ugly
- OAK DE L.Johnstone, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- OAK DT T.Kelly, Illegal Use of Hands, declined
- CLV S B.Russell, Defensive Holding, 5 yards
- CLV DE A.McKinley, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards
- CLV OLB K.Wimbley, Face Mask (15 Yards), 7 yards
- OAK CB N.Asomugha, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- OAK S J.Cooper, Interference with Opportunity to Catch, 15 yards
- OAK CB F.Washington, Defensive Pass Interference, declined
- OAK S M.Huff, Defensive Pass Interference, 7 yards
Jacksonville at Washington
Time of Possession: Washington 35:28, Jacksonville 24:32
Total Plays: Washington 70, Jacksonville 54
Sometimes the NFL is just hard to figure out. This goes to show you how hard
it is to win on the road, no matter who you're playing. Two weeks ago the Jacksonville
Jaguars were making the defending champions look like the Oakland Raiders. This
week, they make the Washington Redskins look like, well, the Washington Redskins
that we expected to see when the season began. The Jaguars entered the game
with the leagues #3 defense (12th pass, 3rd run), allowing a paltry 59.0 yards
per game on the ground. WAS QB Mark Brunell, making his first start against
his old team, threw for 328 yards and 3 TDs while the Redskins tallied 152 yards
on the ground. Brunell's 117.2 QB rating dwarfs the 54.4 rating that the Jags
were holding opposing QBs to. Washington, on the other hand, had yet to get
into a groove, defensively, but found their place this weekend in holding Jacksonville
to just 33 yards on the ground. The Jaguars fell well short of the average TOP
(23:00) which ranked #2 in the NFL.
The Jaguars opened in a nickel defense with CB Terry Cousin (PD) starting in
place of LB Nick Griesen (4 tackles, 3 solo). This was to match Washington's
3-WR set.
WAS CB Shawn Springs is still out with a groin injury, replaced in the starting
lineup by Kenny Wright (3 tackles, 2 solo, PD).
JAC CB Rashean Mathis was questionable with a knee injury, but he started the
game.
WAS DT Joe Salave'a was listed as probable with a calf injury, but he ended
up inactive. Kedric Golston (1 solo tackle, PD) replaced him in the lineup.
The Good
- JAC SS Donovin Darius: 9 tackles (8 solo)
- JAC CB Brian Williams: 9 tackles (6 solo), FF
- JAC MLB Mike Peterson: 9 tackles (6 solo). He's off a bit this year with
20 solo tackles through four games, but he's consistent (exactly 6 solos in
three of four games)
- JAC FS Deon Grant: 8 tackles (7 solo), PD, FR
- JAC DE Paul Spicer: 6 tackles (5 solo)
- JAC CB Rashean Mathis: 4 solo tackles, INT, 2 PD. Mathis leads the NFL with
4 INT
- WAS CB Carlos Rogers: 7 tackles (6 solo)
- WAS DE Andre Carter: 4 tackles (3 solo), sack, 2 QH. His first sack with
the Redskins
- WAS DE Phillip Daniels: 1 solo tackle, sack, QH, INT, 2 PD. 7 sacks in his
last seven games. The interception this week was the first of his career
The Bad
- JAC DE Rob Meier: 1 solo tackle, QH. He hasn't offered much as Reggie Hayward's
replacement
- JAC WLB Daryl Smith: 4 tackles (3 solo). Hasn't recorded 5 or more solos
in a game this year
- JAC FS Sean Taylor: 3 tackles (1 solo), 2 PD
- With such a time of possession disparity, you can't fault the Redskins for
their lack of production in this game. As a team, they recorded just 33 solo
tackles.
The Ugly
- JAX S D.Grant, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards
New England at Cincinnati
Time of Possession: New England 33:56, Cincinnati 26:04
Total Plays: New England 67, Cincinnati 56
The New England Patriots are champions, bottom line, and they showed this weekend
that they are not a team that should be overlooked. Apparently headed in different
directions, I don't think that anyone would be surprised if the score of this
38-13 Patriots victory was turned around, especially considering that they were
playing in Cincinnati. Coming into the game the Bengals were averaging 28.3
points per game, the Patriots 16.7. Corey Dillon's return to the Cin-city was
a success, although he was outshined by rookie Laurence Maroney's 125 yard/2
TD performance. The Patriots ran for 236 yards after posting just 50 against
Denver in week three. All in all, this is a game that the Bengals have to put
behind them, using their miscues to become the team that they hope to be. New
England hasn't lost consecutive games since 2002.
As he has in the past, NE WR Troy Brown (0 tackles) lined up in the defensive
backfield for the Patriots.
The Patriots opened in a 4-3 nickel with Jarvis Green at defensive end and
Hank Poteat (2 tackles, 1 solo, PD) as the extra cornerback. This was to match
the Bengals 3-WR set. Tedy Bruschi (7 tackles, 3 solo) and Mike Vrabel (4 tackles,
3 solo) were the two linebackers.
NE FS Eugene Wilson (hamstring) and CB Ellis Hobbs (wrist) were both inactive.
Artrell Hawkins (5 tackles, 2 solo), who was questionable himself with a thigh
injury, started at free-safety while Chad Scott took replaced Hobbs.
CIN FS Dexter Jackson was inactive with ankle injury, replaced by Kevin Kaesviharn.
CIN SLB Rashad Jeanty, who had taken over for David Pollack, was inactive with
a shoulder injury. Landon Johnson moved to the strongside while Caleb Miller
started at WLB.
The Good
- NE DE Jarvis Green: 4 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 3 QH, FF, FR. This was Green's
first career multi-sack game
- NE CB Chad Scott: 6 tackles (5 solo), PD
- NE CB Asante Samuel: 6 tackles (5 solo)
- CIN WLB Caleb Miller: 13 tackles (7 solo), PD
- CIN DE Justin Smith: 10 tackles (5 solo), QH. Smith didn't record a sack
(8 sacks in the past 11 games) but he remains productive
The Bad
- NE OLB Rosevelt Colvin: 1 solo tackle, QH, PD. 5 solo tackles and 1 sack
in four games
- NE DE Richard Seymour: 0 tackles, PD
- NE LB Junior Seau: 1 assist
- CIN DE Robert Geathers: blanked from the boxscore. Weeks 1 & 3: Smith/Geathers
combined for 13 solo tackles, 8 sacks. Weeks 2 & 4 they combined for 6
solo tackles, 0 sacks
- CIN MLB Brian Simmons: 4 assists, QH
- CIN SLB Landon Johnson: 5 tackles (1 solo)
- CIN DE Bryan Robinson: 1 solo tackle
The Ugly
- CIN DT J.Thornton, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards
- CIN DT S.Adams, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
- CIN S E.Kilmer, Illegal Use of Hands, 10 yards
- CIN S K.Kaesviharn, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards
- NE CB H.Poteat, Illegal Contact, 5 yards
- NE LB M.Vrabel, Defensive Pass Interference, 3 yards
- NE CB A.Spann, Defensive Holding, 8 yards
- NE LB T.Banta-Cain, Defensive Offside, 5 yards
Seattle at Chicago
Time of Possession: Chicago 35:32, Seattle 24:28
Total Plays: Chicago 70, Seattle 61
The leagues 2nd ranked run defense (Seattle) versus the leagues number four
overall defense (Chicago). Matt Hasselbeck, who threw for five TDs in week three,
against a Bears defense yet to allow a passing touchdown this year. Maurice
Morris going against, well, not much was expected of Morris, but the rest of
this added up to a clash of the Titans (not those Titans). Unfortunately, Seattle
left their ammunition in the Pacific Northwest and showed up to this gunfight
unarmed. Chicago is now 5-1 at home under Rex Grossman, 9-1 at home since the
start of 2005 and 4-0 for the first time since 1991. I'm not sure if Shaun Alexander
would've made a difference in this one, but he couldn't have hurt.
CHI DT Ian Scott (1 solo tackle), who started the first three weeks, was replaced
in the starting lineup by Tank Johnson (3 solo tackles, QH).
The Bears opened in a nickel defense to match the Seahawks 3-WR set. Ricky
Manning was the extra cornerback with regular SLB Hunter Hillenmeyer (1 solo
tackle) on the sidelines.
The Good
- SEA MLB Lofa Tatupu: 11 tackles (9 solo). The big plays are missing, but
Tatupu has posted 26 solo tackles in four games
- SEA OLB LeRoy Hill: 9 solo tackles. 19 solos in three games
- SEA OLB Julian Peterson: 9 tackles (5 solo)
- CHI WLB Lance Briggs: 10 tackles (9 solo). 28 solo tackles in four games
- CHI DT Tommie Harris: 3 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 4 QH. Harris leads NFL DTs
with 5 sacks through four games. His career high was 3.5
- CHI backup rookie DE Mark Anderson: 2 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 QH
- CHI nickel CB Ricky Manning: 0 tackles, 2 INT, 4 PD
The Bad
- SEA DE Grant Wistrom: 2 solo tackles, QH. 5 solo tackles in four games
- SEA DE Bryce Fisher: 2 solo tackles
- SEA FS Ken Hamlin: 3 tackles (2 solo)
- SEA CB Marcus Trufant: 2 solo tackles, PD
- CHI MLB Brian Urlacher: 7 tackles (5 solo), PD. With their defense playing
so well, it's tough to get on the Big Kahuna, but his solo tackle numbers
(5.3 per game) are a career low
- CHI DE Adewale Ogunleye: 1 solo tackle. Ogunleye is looking to become the
first Bears player to record double digit sacks in back-to-back seasons since
Richard Dent (90-91). He better heat up soon (1.5 sacks through 4 games)
- CHI CB Nathan Vasher: 1 assist, PD
The Ugly
- SEA DE D.Tapp, Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- SEA DE B.Fisher, Encroachment, 5 yards
- CHI DE I.Idonije, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards
- SEA DT R.Bernard, Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yards
- CHI DE A.Brown, Defensive Offside, declined
- CHI DE A.Ogunleye, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards
- CHI DT Ta.Johnson, Illegal Block Above the Waist, declined
- CHI S M.Brown, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards
- CHI DE A.Ogunleye, Defensive Offside, declined
- SEA CB M.Trufant, Defensive Pass Interference, 14 yards
- SEA CB K.Herndon, Illegal Contact, declined
- CHI CB R.Manning, Offensive Holding, 10 yards
- SEA LB N.Koutouvides, Offensive Holding, 10 yards
