Miami at Pittsburgh, Thursday Night (season
opener)
With Charlie Batch at the helm, filling in for Ben Roethlisberger during the
season opener, the Steelers had to hope that they could stay in the game, keeping
it close just long enough for their defense to take over. They got quite a bit
more from Batch and everything else played out as scripted.
The Steelers have allowed just one 100 yard rusher since 2004 and they were
determined not to let Ronnie Brown become the second. Miami was held to just
38 yards on the ground (2.1 per carry).
MIA CB Andre Goodman (4 tackles, 3 solo) started in place of Travis Daniels.
Officially listed as questionable, Daniels was inactive and his status for week
two in uncertain.
MIA FS Renaldo Hill (5 solo tackles) appears to have held off rookie 1st round
pick Jason Allen.
The Good
- PIT LB Joey Porter picked up his first career TD off of an interception
return. It was his 9th career interception, giving him a TD every nine catches.
Steve Smith and Torry Holt? They both have averaged around a TD every 11 catches
throughout their careers. Hmmm
With two sacks, Porter increased his
career total to 55, moving him past Greg Lloyd into 5th place on the Steelers
all-time list. In true Joey Porter fashion, despite all of the highlights
he recorded just two solo tackles.
- The stars certainly showed up for Pittsburgh on opening night with both
Porter and SS Troy Polamalu making big plays with the game on its hinges.
Polamalu has a way of laying low, leaving you thinking "What's all of
the hype about?" then BAM!!! He makes a difference.
- MIA LB Zach Thomas had a productive night overall with a game-high 12 tackles
(8 solo) but watching him try to chase down Heath Miller was painful. Stay
near the line, little fella.
- PIT LB James Farrior: 7 tackles (5 solo), a sack and 2 QB hurries
The Bad
- It was a disappointing game for MIA LB Channing Crowder. He's a popular
sleeper/breakout candidate this year and the week one matchup v. Pittsburgh
was a great opportunity to introduce himself, especially with a Time of Possession
so heavily in Pitt's favor (35:27 - 24:33). Hopefully his 3 solo tackle performance
is not a sign of things to come.
The Line of a Champion
- Score: MIA 17, PIT 14. 6:25 remaining in the 4th quarter
- Heath Miller, 87 yard TD reception
- Three plays later, Polamalu picks off Daunte Culpepper
- Seven play drive for Pittsburgh, ending in a missed FG (not quite New England-like
championship
yet)
- Next play, Joey Porter picks off Culpepper and returns it 42 yards for a
TD
- Game over
Atlanta at Carolina
Atlanta's 252 rushing yards (5.4 average) were the 2nd most ever given up by
the Carolina Panthers. Which of these defensive units is considered among the
leagues elite? The Falcons allowed just 65 rushing yards (4.1) and 150 passing.
This was a horrible overall performance by Carolina's offense and defense.
The return of a healthy DT Kris Jenkins and the addition of DT Ma'ake Kemoeatu
made no difference.
ATL CB Jason Webster (4 tackles, 3 solo, INT, PD) has held off rookie 2nd round
pick Jimmy Williams
for now.
ATL MLB Ed Hartwell (inactive) was listed as doubtful after having arthroscopic
surgery on both knees and he's likely out until week four. With Hartwell out,
Keith Brooking (6 solo tackles) slides in to middle linebacker while last years
darling, Demorrio Williams (8 tackles, 5 solo) gets to play on the weakside.
The Good
- ATL DE John Abraham, in his first game as a member of the Falcons: 5 tackles
(4 solo), 2 sacks, a PD and 2 FF
- ATL DT Rod Coleman: 2 solo tackles, a sack and 3 hurries
- CAR SS Shaun Williams: led Carolina with 10 tackles (8 solo)
- CAR SLB Thomas Davis: Davis had a so-so day at his new position with 5 tackles
(4 solo), 2 hurries and a FF
The Bad
- ATL DE Patrick Kerney: zero
- ATL SLB Michael Boley: zilch
- CAR front-7: DBs led the Panthers in tackles. Williams, CB Ken Lucas (8
tackles, 5 solo), CB Chris Gamble (7 tackles, 5 solo) and FS Mike Minter (6
solo tackles)
- CAR Offense: they didn't help out the defense much with a league low Time
of Possession (23:22)
The Ugly
- ATL DE John Abraham limped off the field late in the game with a groin injury
- ATL DE Patrick Kerney strained a right triceps in the 1st quarter.
- CAR MLB Dan Morgan suffered a concussion (WHAT!!!?) early in the 2nd quarter.
Morgan was replaced by Adam Seward who posted 6 tackles (5 solo)
Seattle at Detroit
Seattle, with their minds set on becoming one of the leagues top defensive
units, held Detroit to just 38 yards rushing (2.2 average).
The Lions got to Matt Hasselbeck five times on Sunday. He was sacked just 24
times in 2005.
With Teddy Lehman on the PUP list and Boss Bailey (4 assists) working his way
back from an ankle injury, Paris Lenon started at MLB for the Lions with Alex
Smith (8 tackles, 5 solo, FF) on the strongside.
D.D. Lewis (4 solo tackles, sack) started at OLB for the Seahawks in place
of LeRoy Hill, who was inactive with a pinched nerve in his neck.
The Good
- DET LB Ernie Sims paced the Lions with 10 tackles (7 solo)
- DET DT Shaun Rogers: 5 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 hurries, blocked field goal
- DET DE James Hall: 2 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 hurries, blocked field goal
(Hall's eyes must've gotten real wide when he saw Walter Jones leave the game
with an ankle injury)
- SEA CB Kelly Herndon: Being pushed by rookie 1st round pick Kelly Jennings,
Herndon recorded a team-high 8 tackles (6 solo)
- DET Secondary: FS Terrence Holt, feelin' the heat from rookie Daniel Bullocks,
(10 tackles, 7 solo), CB Fernando Bryant (8 solo tackles), CB Dre Bly (6 tackles,
5 solo, FF) and SS Kenoy Kennedy (6 tackles, 5 solo)
The Bad
- SEA DE Grant Wistrom: nada
- DET MLB Paris Lenon: 1 assist
New Orleans at Cleveland
New Orleans' vaunted defense held Cleveland to 186 total yards (101 passing,
85 rushing).
NO LB Mark Simoneau started in the middle ahead of Danny Clark and Alfred Fincher.
Both Clark and Fincher saw time on special teams but failed to record a defensive
tackle. Scott Shanle started at WLB and will likely be the regular there.
CLE FS Brian Russell's availability was uncertain, but he started and performed
pretty well with 6 tackles (5 solo) and a FF. Brodney Poole, the player expected
to eventually displace Russell, picked up 1 solo tackle.
CLE CB Leigh Bodden (6 solo tackles, 3 PD) started with Daylon McCutcheon inactive
(knee), Bodden himself was questionable entering the game with a strained pectoral.
CB Gary Baxter (5 tackles, 4 solo, PD) also started after being questionable
with a strained pec.
The Good
- CLE ILB Andra Davis: led the Browns with 11 tackles (8 solo) and a QB hurry
- CLE SS Sean Jones: 3 solo tackles, INT, PD, FR
- CLE ILB D'Qwell Jackson: 10 tackles (7 solo). Appears to have held off Chaun
Thompson (0 tackles)
- NO DT Brian Young: 5 tackles (4 solo), 3 sacks, 3 QH, FR
- NO Safety Tandem: 2nd year FS Josh Bullocks (6 tackles, 5 solo, INT, PD)
and rookie Roman Harper (5 solo tackles, sack, QH). With a group of less than
stellar linebackers in front of them, the safeties in New Orleans could be
set up for a very nice campaign, tackles wise.
The Bad
- NO DE Will Smith started off the season on the right foot (5 tackles, 3
solo, sack, QH) but linemate DE Charles Grant (3 tackles, 2 solo, QH) continues
to struggle. Going back to last year, Grant has now gone seven games without
a sack.
- CLE OLB Kamerion Wimbley's highlight reel preseason wasn't enough for him
to steal a starting job, although it might not be long with starters Willie
McGinest (4 tackles, 3 solo) and Matt Stewart (1 solo tackle).
- NO MLB Mark Simoneau: 5 tackles (2 solo), 2 QH. If you're going to start,
give us something.
The Ugly
- Backup DE Nick Eason was carted off of the field with a leg injury.
Philadelphia at Houston
Philly's defense held the Houston Texans to just 241 total yards (171 passing,
70 rushing) but the tasty matchup turned sour for many Eagles defenders.
HOU CB Lewis Sanders (3 tackles, 2 solo, 2 PD) started in place of DeMarcus
Faggins, who will miss the seasons first month with a broken foot.
The Good
- PHI MLB Jeremiah Trotter: led the Eagles with 9 tackles (6 solo) and a PD
- PHI WLB Matt McCoy: 8 tackles (7 solo), QH, FF
- PHI Pass-rush specialist Trent Cole: 3 tackles (2 solo), 2 sacks, 2 QH,
PD
- HOU MLB DeMeco Ryans: 13 tackles (12 solo) Welcome to the NFL!!!
- HOU WLB Morlon Greenwood: 8 tackles (7 solo) He's sort of been lost in the
mix here in Houston.
- HOU CB Dunta Robinson: 7 solo tackles. Robinson posted 7 or more tackles
five times as a rookie in 2004 but did it just once last year. His opening
day performance is a very good sign.
The Bad
- PHI FS Brian Dawkins: 2 solo tackles. Last year, he posted <3 solos twice.
Way back in 2002, the last time that the Eagles faced the Texans, Dawkins
became the first player in NFL history to post a sack, INT, FR and a TD reception
in the same game. This time around he wasn't so lucky.
- PHI DEs Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard: They had to be salivating at a week
one matchup versus Houston and their sack friendly offensive-line. They did
get to the quarterback, once, and combined for just 3 solo tackles.
- PHI SLB Dhani Jones: 1 solo tackle
- HOU DE Mario Williams: 3 tackles (2 solo). A very ho-hum day for the drafts
#1 overall selection.
- Wali Lundy with 11 rushes for 32 yards. Reggie Bush with 14-61 rushing,
8-58 receiving. I'm just sayin'
The Ugly
- PHI CB Lito Sheppard injured his ankle in the 1st quarter and didn't return
Cincinnati at Kansas City
In what was supposed to be a shoot-out, these two teams combined for less than
300 net yards passing. Kansas City brought their gun (Larry Johnson) but shot
themselves in the foot in allowing Cincinnati to record 7 sacks.
CIN Undrafted rookie DE Rashad Jeanty (2 solo tackles) started at OLB in place
of David Pollack, who was listed as probable with a hamstring injury. Pollack
played but failed to record a tackle.
CIN rookie 1st round pick John Joseph (3 solo tackles, 1 QB hurry) started
at CB in place of Deltha O'Neal (3 solos, PD), who was listed as probable with
a knee injury.
The Good
- The defensive linemen were the stars in this game with CIN DE Justin Smith
(5 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 2 QH, FF, FR), CIN DE Robert Geathers (4 tackles,
3 solo, 2 sacks, 3 QH) and KC DE Jared Allen (7 solo tackles, sack, 2 QH,
FF) all having outstanding afternoons.
- CIN LB Brian Simmons, starting in the middle while Odell Thurman tries to
pull his life together, led the Bengals with 8 tackles (7 solo)
The Bad
- Nothing like a little position battle to get the juices flowing for a few
Chiefs defenders
or not. With LB Kendrell Bell, SS Sammy Knight and FS
Greg Wesley all having been reported on their respective hot seats, none of
the three distinguished themselves against the Bengals. Bell posted just 2
solo tackles, Knight had 4 solos and Wesley picked up 3. Unfortunately, their
combatants didn't fare much better as LB Keyaron Fox and Bernard Pollard were
both shut out while Jarrad Page picked up 2 solo tackles.
Buffalo at New England
The New England Patriots have now taken five in a row against the Buffalo Bills.
The last time the Bills played at New England, Tedy Bruschi was returning after
fighting off cancer to help lead the Pats in a fourth quarter comeback over
Buffalo. This time around, they didn't have to deal with Bruschi, but they were
still unable to get over the hump. The two teams combined for just 277 net passing
yards and Buffalo was completely shut down on their final three possessions
of the game (-10 net yards).
BUF SS Coy Wire (1 assist) started over Donte Whitner but was outplayed severely
by the rookie 1st round pick who posted 8 tackles (4 solo), INT, PD
With NE ILB Tedy Bruschi inactive (broken wrist, listed as questionable), Tully
Banta-Cain (3 tackles, 2 solo, 2 QH) started at OLB and Mike Vrabel (8 tackles,
4 solo) moved inside next to Junior Seau (8 tackles, 5 solo)
The Good
- NE DE Ty Warren: 6 tackles (2 solo), sack, safety, 2 QH
- NE OLB Rosevelt Colvin: 3 tackles (2 solo), sack, 4 QH, PD
- NE DE Richard Seymour: 5 tackles (4 solo), sack, 3 QH
- CB Terrence McGee and LB London Fletcher paced the Bills with each posting
10 tackles (9 solo). McGee added in a PD while Fletcher recovered a fumble
and returned it 5 yards for a TD.
- BUF DE Chris Kelsay: 4 solo tackles, sack, 2 QH, FF
- BUF DE Aaron Schobel: Schobel only recorded one solo tackle, but he made
it count with a sack, QH and 2 PD. He has now recorded 11 sacks in his last
11 games dating back to last year.
The Bad
- BUF LB Takeo Spikes: He picked up a sack/FF on the first possession but
ended with just 1 solo tackle
- BUF CB Nate Clements: 3 tackles (1 solo)
- BUF LB Angelo Crowell: 7 tackles (4 solo). Not horrible, I just expected
better with this matchup.
The Ugly
- BUF LB Takeo Spikes left the game with a hamstring injury. Rookie 6th round
pick Keith Ellison came in to post 9 tackles (3 solo).
- BUF FS Troy Vincent left the game with a hamstring injury, opening the door
for rookie 4th round pick Ko Simpson, who picked up 7 tackles (4 solo).
Denver at St. Louis
It's amazing that Denver was able to stay in this game, posting only 98 passing
yards while giving up three interceptions and four sacks, but their defense
was able to hold tight and limit the Rams to just seven field goal attempts.
At one point, 42 of 46 plays in this game had been run in Denver territory.
DEN DE Kenard Lang (2 solo tackles, sack, QH) started in place of Courtney
Brown, who was inactive with a knee injury.
The Good
- STL DE Leonard Little: 5 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 3 QH, FF
- STL MLB Will Witherspoon: 9 solo tackles, PD, FF
- STL CB Fakhir Brown: 4 solo tackles, sack, QH, INT, PD
- DEN MLB Al Wilson: 7 tackles (6 solo). For all of the hype that Al Wilson
receives, he is not a tackle monster. The six solo tackles that he posted
here are a good sign considering he's picked up 6 or more just seven times
over the last two seasons.
- DEN CBs Champ Bailey and Darrent Williams: The cornerback duo combined for
15 solo tackles (9 for Bailey)
The Bad
- DEN LBs Ian Gold and D.J. Williams: The linebacker duo combined for just
5 tackles (4 solo) and a PD
- STL SLB Brandon Chillar: 3 solo tackles
- STL WLB Pia Tinoisamoa: 2 solo tackles, FR. The addition of Will Witherspoon
in St. Louis will make it difficult for Tinoisamoa to continue his streak
of leading the Rams in tackles for 3 straight seasons.
The Ugly
- STL DT Jimmy Kennedy (0 tackles) broke his right hand in the 1st quarter
but continued to play with a cast.
Baltimore at Tampa Bay
Baltimore held Tampa Bay to 142 total yards (116 passing, 26 rushing). Tampa
Bay is not used to this kind of beat down, giving up 3 sacks, 3 interceptions
and being limited to just 24:11 in Time of Possession. An amazing performance
by the Ravens defense to open the season. You think Ray Lewis was missed?
TB MLB Barrett Ruud (8 tackles, 3 solo) started in place of Shelton Quarles
(inactive-groin), who was listed as questionable.
The Good
- The Ravens LB trio picked up 18 of the teams 34 solo tackles and all 3 sacks.
- BAL MLB Ray Lewis: He sat out the last 10 games a year ago with a hamstring
injury and many believe that he's lost a step at 31 years of age. If so, he
didn't show it this week on his way to 7 solo tackles, a sack, a QB hurry
and 3 PD.
- BAL WLB Bart Scott: 5 solo tackles, 2 sacks, 3 QH and 2 PD. One of his passes
defended was a tipped ball that DT Haloti Ngata picked off and rumbled 60
yards down the field with.
- BAL SLB Adalius Thomas: 7 tackles (6 solo). He had recorded a sack in each
of the last five games a year ago.
- BAL CB Chris McAlister: McAlister goes up and down on the list of "Best
NFL CBs" but he sure played the part as the best on Sunday with 2 solo
tackles, 2 PD and an interception that he returned 60 yards for a score.
- TB CB Ronde Barber: 11 tackles (10 solo), PD
- TB WLB Derrick Brooks: 11 tackles (9 solo). The last time these two teams
matched up, Brooks returned an interception 97 yards for a score.
The Bad
- BAL DE Trevor Pryce: 1 assist, QH, PD
- BAL SS Dawan Landry: After winning the battle for the starting strong safety
job, Landry opens up with 3 solo tackles.
- TB DEs Simeon Rice and Greg Spires: The duo combined for 6 tackles (4 solo)
and 4 QH hurries (3 from Rice). Both were outplayed by backup DeWayne White
who posted 3 solo tackles, a sack, QH and a FF.
New York Jets at Tennessee
The Jets allowed just two sacks after giving up 53 a year ago, giving Chad
Pennington the protection that he needed to post a league high QB ranking for
week one (319 yards, 123.2 QB rank). Now, if they could just find a running
game.
Ex-Titan DT Robaire Smith (0 tackles), recently signed by Tennessee after being
released by Houston, started ahead of Randy Starks (4 solo tackles, FR).
The Good
- NYJ MLB John Vilma: 12 tackles (7 solo), helping ease the thoughts that
he'd struggle as the Jets transitioned to a 3-4 defense (they opened this
game in a 4-3 set)
- NYJ CB Andre Dyson: 6 tackles (5 solo), 2 INT, 2 PD
- NYJ #3 CB David Barrett: 7 tackles (6 solo), FF
- TEN WLB Keith Bulluck: 14 tackles (10 solo), FF
- TEN SS Chris Hope: 9 tackles (7 solo)
- TEN DE Kyle Vanden Bosch: 8 tackles (6 solo), sack, QH
- TEN SLB David Thornton: 7 tackles (6 solo), PD. A good sign for Thornton
as he recorded 6 or more solo tackles just five times over the last two seasons.
The Bad
- NYJ FS Erik Coleman: 2 tackles (1 solo)
- TEN DE Travis LaBoy: 2 tackles (1 solo)
- Only 6 solo tackles from the Jets four starting DL with Shaun Ellis and
Kimo von Oelhoffen shut out completely
The Ugly
- TEN DT Robaire Smith injured his hamstring during the game.
San Francisco at Arizona
If the Arizona Cardinals hand-picked the San Francisco 49ers to open their
new stadium, they got a little more than they were expecting. Arizona controlled
the clock (35:02 - 24:58 TOP) and appeared to be rolling early on, but the 'Niners
showed true grit and hung in 'til the end behind an outstanding performance
from RB Frank Gore and surprising play from QB Alex Smith. These two teams certainly
don't appear to be on opposite ends of the expectations spectrum, as is widely
believed.
SF rookie 6th round DE Melvin Oliver (3 tackles, 2 solo) started at OLB ahead
of Brandon Moore (2 solo tackles, sack, QH, FF).
ARI LB Karlos Dansby was inactive (toe). He may be ready for week two.
The Good
- ARI MLB Gerald Hayes: 5 solo tackles, sack, FR (that he returned to the
SF 5 yard line)
- ARI CB Antrel Rolle: 8 tackles (7 solo), 2 PD. Rolle has now posted 6 or
more solo tackles in four of six NFL games.
- SF CB Shawntae Spencer: 6 tackles (5 solo), PD. Going back to last year,
he's picked up five or more solos in four straight games.
- SF ILB Derek Smith: 9 tackles (8 solo)
- SF FS Mike Adams: 8 tackles (7 solo), QH
- SF CB Walt Harris: 6 tackles (5 solo), sack, 2 PD, FF, FR
- SF OLB Manny Lawson: 6 solo tackles. The rookie 1st round pick did not register
a pressure stat or sack in the boxscore, but he was all over the field and
the six solos that he posted are better than expected.
The Bad
- SF SS Tony Parrish: 1 solo tackle
- ARI CB David Macklin: zero tackles, PD
- ARI DEs Bert Berry and Chike Okeafor: combined for 0 tackles. Berry had
picked up 5 sacks in his last three games against the 49ers. The 3 QB hurries
that he posted show that was close and active, just not close enough.
Dallas at Jacksonville
The Cowboys had early success running the ball and, having built a 10-0 lead,
it's interesting that they ended with only 22 rushes (4.0 average). They lost
the TOP battle 34:12 - 25:48. Very un-Bill Parcells like.
DAL FS rookie 5th round pick Pat Watkins (5 solo tackles) started ahead of
Keith Davis (zero tackles).
The Good
- DAL CB Anthony Henry: 8 solo tackles, 2 PD. Henry appears to have picked
up where he left off last season (pre-groin injury) when he posted 34 solo
tackles and 13 PD in the first eight games.
- DAL ILB Akin Ayodele: 6 solo tackles. A new position, inside Dallas' 3-4
defense, should lead to career solo tackle numbers.
- JAC MLB Mike Peterson: Listed as questionable with a knee injury, Peterson
not only started the game but he led the Jags in tackles (6 solos) and picked
off a Drew Bledsoe pass late in the 4th quarter.
- JAC CB Rashean Mathis: 6 solo tackles, INT, 2 PD
- JAC DE Paul Spicer: 2 solo tackles, sack, 3 QH
The Bad
- DAL OLB DeMarcus Ware (4 solos, QH) and backup DE Jay Ratliff (1 solo, sack,
QH) recorded the only QB hurries for Dallas, with Ratliff picking up the Cowboys
lone sack.
- JAC OLB Nick Griesen: zero tackles, INT, PD
- JAC DT Marcus Stroud: 1 solo tackle
The Ugly
- JAC DE Reggie Hayward (zero tackles) ruptured his Achilles' and is done
for the year.
Chicago at Green Bay
Chicago's 26-0 victory over Green Bay marks the first time that the Packers
have been shut out since 1991, when they were beat 10-0 by
Chicago. This
was Chicago's first shut out since 2001.
The Bears opened the game in a three-safety formation with Mike Brown (4 tackles,
3 solo), Chris Harris (4 tackles, 1 solo) and Todd Johnson (2 tackles, 1 solo).
CB Charles Tillman joined them in the defensive backfield.
CHI rookie 2nd round pick Devin Hester returned a punt 84 yards for a TD.
The Good
- CHI WLB Lance Briggs: 9 solo tackles, sack, QH
- CHI DE Alex Brown: 1 solo tackle, sack, 2 QH, PD. He entered the game questionable
with a shoulder injury.
- CHI CB Charles Tillman: 5 solo tackles, QH, INT, 2 PD. Tillman has recorded
5 or more solo tackles in 21 of 39 career games.
- GB SLB Brady Poppinga: 8 tackles (7 solo)
- GB DE Aaron Kampman: 7 tackles (4 solo), sack, 4 QH. Possibly the most unheralded
defensive end in the NFL.
The Bad
- CHI MLB Brain Urlacher: 7 tackles (4 solo). Anytime Urlacher does post 6
or more solo tackles is a major letdown.
- GB WLB A.J. Hawk: 5 tackles (3 solo), QH. It's only his first NFL game,
but there is a lot of speculation that he isn't the player that Green Bay
was hoping for. His week one performance didn't help matters.
The Ugly
- CHI SLB Hunter Hillenmeyer suffered a concussion in the 2nd quarter and
left the game.
- CHI DT Tommie Harris was limping after the game because of an apparent cut-block
by a Packers' O-lineman. He left the game but returned.
Indianapolis at New York Giants
The Giants held the Colts to just 55 yards rushing (2.4 average) while picking
up 186 yards of their own (6.6 average). Add in a slight Time of Possession
victory and this is usually the recipe for victory. Unfortunately, it wasn't
so for the Giants on Sunday night. They lost the turnover battle 2-1 and, while
they supposedly addressed their lack of "hands" on defense over the
offseason, they dropped two key interceptions (CB Corey Webster and S James
Butler) during drives that led to Indianapolis scores.
IND rookie 6th round pick SS Antoine Bethea (6 tackles, 4 solo, PD) started
in place of Mike Doss, who was questionable with a leg injury. Doss saw the
field but failed to record a tackle.
The Good
- IND FS Bob Sanders: 8 tackles (7 solo). Going back to last year, Sanders
has posted 36 solo tackles over his last 6 games.
- IND MLB Gary Brackett: 7 tackles (6 solo). Brackett has 41 solos over those
same six games.
- IND #3 CB Marlin Jackson: 7 tackles (6 solo)
- NYG MLB Antonio Pierce: 11 tackles (7 solo), PD
The Bad
- This was not a game friendly to the games elite pass rushers.
- The Colts dynamic duo of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis combined for just
3 tackles (2 solo) and a FR. They were the only AFC tandem a year ago to both
have 10+ sacks.
- The Giants end combo, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, didn't fare much
better. They totaled 7 tackles (5 solo) with a PD.
- NYG SLB LaVar Arrington: 4 tackles (3 solo). Letting him roam is fine, but
maybe the Giants should direct him to roam to the ball.
The Ugly
- NYG DE Osi Umenyiora suffered cramps and had to leave the game. He should
be fine.
