Week 16 Game Recap: Kansas City Chiefs 20, Oakland Raiders 9

What you need to know

Kansas City Chiefs

QB Trent Green led the Chiefs to a victory, and broke a three game losing streak, but he did not have a great night statistically finishing the game 12 for 24 for 148 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Green got off to great start leading his team to a touchdown on there first drive of the game and hitting Eddie Kennison on a six yard touchdown pass. He finished the first half with 110 passing yards, but he did little in the second half. The Kansas City rushing game took control of the game in the second half as Green only attempted five passes in the second half. The Chiefs defense also kept the Raiders offense in check most of the second half and there was little reason for Kansas City to the throw the ball.

RB Larry Johnson had an excellent game as he had 135 yards rushing and one touchdown, and helped the Chiefs to an eighth consecutive victory over Oakland. Johnson started out slow in the first half, but got an easy one yard touchdown run late in the half after one of Oakland’s five turnovers in the game. He wore down the Raiders run defense in the second half as he had 87 yards rushing and the Chiefs dominated the time of possession in the second half. Johnson was the Chiefs’ workhorse again in this game as he had 31 carries in the game, and he broke Christian Okoye’s team record for carries in a season which was 370. He is now only 17 carries away from 400.

TE Tony Gonzalez led the Chiefs with five receptions for 67 yards in the game. He was Kansas City’s most effective receiver as the Raiders’ cornerbacks did a pretty good job of containing the Chiefs’ receivers.

Oakland Raiders

It was the same old story for the Raiders’ offense again in this game, five costly turnovers and an anemic performance that only managed to produce three field goals in the game. QB Andrew Walter got the start for starter QB Aaron Brooks, and he accounted for four of the Raiders five turnovers. His passing numbers were decent as he completed 27 of 37 attempts for 226 yards, but lost two fumbles and threw two interceptions. Walter is clearly a liability in the pocket because of his lack of mobility and the inability of the Raiders’ offensive line to pass block effectively. He was sacked four times in this game. The Raiders did not try to the throw he ball deep during the game, instead choosing to throw short to medium range passes. The Raiders only had one pass reception of twenty yards or more in the game.

RB Justin Fargas had a good game as he had 90 yards off of 19 carries. The Raiders moved the ball on the ground surprisingly well in the first half as Fargas had 68 yards rushing at halftime. But the Raiders offense did little in the second half and Fargas only had six carries. WR Ronald Curry started the game for WR Randy Moss who missed the game because of an ankle injury and he made the best of a bad situation by catching a game high 11 passes for 106 yards. Curry was clearly Walters’ favorite target in the game and he did a good job getting open.

The Raiders went a second consecutive game without an offensive touchdown. They are currently an NFL worst in total offense, turnover ratio, sacks allowed, and points scored.

What you ought to know

QB Trent Green, Pass: 12 - 24 - 148 - 1 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - -1 - 0

Green didn’t have one of his best games, but he did enough to lead the Chiefs to a victory over an underrated Oakland defense. He led the Chiefs on an 11 play, 60 yard touchdown drive on their first possession of the game. He went three for five for 38 yards on the drive, including a six yard touchdown pass to Eddie Kennison. Green made a nice play because he bought himself some time by scrambling out of the pocket, which gave Kennison time to get open. Green finished the first quarter five for nine for 70 yards and one touchdown. He added another 40 yards passing in the second quarter as he led the Chiefs to a second touchdown after another Oakland turnover. He finished the first half ten of 19 for 110 yards and one touchdown.

Green had only two completions for 38 yard in the second half as the Chiefs’ running game took over the game and the defense held the Raiders’ offense down. He did have an interception in the fourth quarter, but managed the game well in the second half and he didn’t need to throw the ball much in the second half as Kansas City had the game in control.

RB Larry Johnson, Rush: 31 - 135 - 1 (2 targets)

Johnson had an excellent game as he was the Chiefs workhorse once again. He had six carries for 22 yards on the Chiefs first drive, including two runs inside the Raiders ten yard line, but he did not score. His best run of the first half came on a run where it looked like he would be stopped for a loss, but he changed direction and took it to the opposite side of the field for an 18 yard game. Johnson got an easy one yard touchdown with less then two minutes in the first half after an Oakland turnover. He finished the first half with 12 carries for 48 yards.

Johnson and Kansas City defense took over in the second half. He had a long run up the middle for 18 yards toward the end of the third quarter. He went over 100 yards for the game when he ran for 19 yards down the left side field midway through the fourth quarter. Johnson seemed to wear down the Raiders run defense in the second half and he had 87 yards in the second half. He also added another 31 carries in this game to his season total and set a Chiefs record for number of rushing attempts in a season in the process.

RB Dee Brown, Rush: 4 - 11 - 0, Rec: 1 - 5 - 0 (2 targets)

Brown came in to give Johnson a breather on a few plays and got four carries for 11 yards. He also added one catch for five yards.

WR Samie Parker, Rec: 3 - 48 - 0 (3 targets)

Parker caught a big pass on the Chiefs first drive of the game when he came up with a 24 yard reception on a fourth and eight play. He made a nice diving reception to keep the ball off the ground on the play and it helped set up the Chiefs first touchdown of the game. Parker caught a 15 yard pass to the Raiders’ seven yard line on the Chiefs’ second possession. His only other catch was a nine reception.

WR Eddie Kennison, Rush: 1 - 5 - 0, Rec: 1 - 6 - 1 (5 targets)

Kennison caught a six yard touchdown reception on the Chiefs first possession of the game. It would turn out to be Kennison’s only catch of the game as he was a non-factor after the touchdown. The Oakland cornerbacks did a good job of shutting Kennison down and keeping him well covered throughout the game.

WR Dante Hall, Rec: 1 - 5 - 0 (1 targets)

Hall’s only reception was short five yard pass to the Raiders’ one yard line that help set up Kansas City’s second touchdown.

TE Tony Gonzalez, Rec: 5 - 67 - 0 (6 targets)

Gonzalez had three receptions for 29 yards in the first half with his longest being a 16 yard completion in the first quarter. He caught a 19 yard pass in the third quarter that put the ball deep into Oakland territory. Gonzalez caught another pass for 19 yards in the fourth quarter as the Kansas City drove deep into the Raiders territory. The Kansas City passing game gave way to the running game in the second half, but Gonzalez did finish as the Chiefs leading receiver with five receptions for 67 yards.

TE Kris Wilson, Rec: 1 - 17 - 0 (1 targets)

Wilson caught his only pass on a reception out in the flat that he took up field for 17 yards.

PK Lawrence Tynes 2 - 3 FG, 2 - 2 XP, 8 points

Tynes made a 29 yard field on the Chiefs' second possession of the game. He missed a 45 yard field in the third quarter, but did make a 28 yard field to start the fourth quarter. Tynes added two extra points in the game.

KC Rush Defense

Kawika Wilson sacked Andrew Walter and forced a fumble in the first quarter. The ball was recovered by Jared Allen on the Raiders’ 38 yard line. Jared Allen forced his own fumble in the second quarter on Walter in the second quarter and recovered the fumble.

KC Pass Defense

Jarrad Page got an interception on the last play of the first half as Walter threw up a desperation throw into the end zone as the first half expired. Page got a second interception in the fourth quarter as the Raiders were driving into scoring range. The Chiefs secondary did a good job of not giving up any big plays and only gave up one passing play of twenty yards or more, and that came at the end of the game when the outcome was all but decided.

QB Andrew Walter, Pass: 27 - 37 - 226 - 0 TD / 2 INT

Walter started for the injured Aaron Brooks in this game. He started the first quarter five for seven for 45 yards, but did have a lost fumble when he was sacked on Oakland’s second drive of the game. Walter completed a high percentage of his passes, but almost all of them were short, underneath passes. Because of Walter’s lack of mobility and the Raiders shaky pass blocking; they seemed to opt for a short passing game so the quarterback didn’t have to hold onto the ball too long. Walter, who has had trouble protecting the ball all season and has put the ball on the ground 13 times this year, turned it over a second time when he held the ball too long and had the ball knocked out of his hands. He had a big 37 yard pass to Johnnie Morant called back with less then a minute left in the game because of a penalty. He finished the half 14 for 18 for 101 yards and no touchdowns. He had an interception on the last play of the game when he threw up the ball on a Hail Mary into the end zone.

Walter had trouble converting third and long passing situations as the Chiefs usually blitzed and got pressure on him. His second interception came early in the fourth quarter as he tried to hit his tight end over the middle near the goal line, but Jarred Page jumped the route and intercepted the ball. The Raiders didn’t try going deep to spread out the offense, but choose to throw short to medium range passes all game. Walter finished the game 27 for 37 for 226 yards which were respectable numbers, but he was unable to get the Raiders in the end zone and protect the ball. Once again pass protection was a big problem for the Raiders as Walter was sacked four times and his lack of mobility in the pocket made him an easy target for the blitzing Chiefs’ defenders.

QB Aaron Brooks

Brooks was inactive for this game due to a sore neck.

RB Justin Fargas, Rush: 19 - 90 - 0, Rec: 2 - 7 - 0 (2 targets)

Fargas got off to a very good start as he had six carries for 40 yards on the Raiders' first drive that led to a field goal. He finished the half with 13 carries for 68 yards and Oakland was surprisingly effective in running the ball in the first half.

Fargas’ first carry of the first half was a nice 14 yard run off the left side of the line. He ran the ball very well all night making good cuts and ran for 90 yards in the game. Fargas was one of the few bright spots for what was another pathetic performance by the Raiders offense that failed to get a touchdown.

RB ReShard Lee, Rush: 4 - 17 - 0, Rec: 3 - 13 - 0 (3 targets)

Lee had a 12 yard run at the end of the first half for the Raiders and it would be his longest play from scrimmage. He had four carries for 17 yards and three receptions for 13 yards.

RB Zack Crockett, Rush: 1 - 5 - 0, Rec: 1 - 0 - 0 (2 targets)

Crockett’s only carry of the game was a five yard run up the middle for a first down on the first play of the second quarter.

WR Ronald Curry, Rec: 11 - 106 - 0 (13 targets)

Curry got the start in the game in place of Randy Moss who was out because of an injury. He caught a 16 yard pass on a crossing route for first down on the Raiders second possession. In the second quarter, Curry had a ten yard reception in the middle of the field and a short six yard completion on third down plays for a first down. He added two more catches for 24 yards in that drive in the second quarter. Curry finished the half with seven receptions for 59 yards as he was clearly Walter’s main target in the first half. No other Raiders’ receiver had more then one catch in the first half.

Curry caught his first pass in the second half on a big third down conversion deep in Kansas City territory. His biggest reception in the second half was 24 yard reception for a first down toward the end of the game. Curry did a good job of getting open as he had a game high 11 receptions for 106 yards. Curry has shown he can be very productive when given an opportunity, even on a very bad offense.

WR Johnnie Morant, Rec: 2 - 33 - 0 (3 targets)

Morant got the start this week in the place of starter Alvis Whitted who was placed on IR this week with a season ending injury. The game started well for him as he caught an 18 yard pass on the first play of the game. Morant had a 37 yard reception called back late in the second quarter when he stepped out of bounds before catching the pass. His second reception of the game was for 15 yards, but then he fumbled the ball at the end of the play and Kansas City recovered.

WR Doug Gabriel, Rec: 1 - 11 - 0 (1 targets)

Gabriel caught his only pass in the fourth quarter for 11 yards and a first down on third down play.

WR Randy Moss

Moss was inactive again for this game due to an ankle injury.

WR Alvis Whitted

Whitted dislocated his wrist during the Raiders' week 15 loss to the Rams, and he was placed on injured reserve this week. Whitted had surprisingly started the Raiders' first 14 games this season.

TE Courtney Anderson, Rec: 4 - 26 - 0 (8 targets)

Anderson caught his first pass for six yards in the second quarter. He would add three more receptions in the second half for 20 yards. Anderson was a favorite target of Walter in the game as the Raiders threw mostly short to medium range passes all game.

TE Randal Williams, Rec: 2 - 21 - 0 (4 targets)

Williams’s first catch was a six yard reception in the flat in the first quarter. His second and last catch didn’t come until the fourth quarter when he caught a 15 yard pass for a first down.

PK Sebastian Janikowski 3 - 3 FG, 0 - 0 XP, 9 points

Janikowski hit a 25 yard field goal on the Raiders’ first drive of the game. His second field goal of the game was 37 yard kick in the beginning of the second quarter. In the third quarter, Janikowski hit a season long 52 yard field goal.

OAK Rush Defense

The Raiders gave up 150 yards to the Chiefs on the ground, including 135 yards to Larry Johnson and one touchdown. The Kansas City running game seemed to wear down the Raiders run defense in the second half.

OAK Pass Defense

Warren Sapp added one more sacks to his total this year. He now has nine sacks and leads all defensive tackles in that category. Nnamdi Asomugha intercepted a Trent Green ball in the fourth quarter.
