Week 4 Game Recap: Green Bay Packers 9, Philadelphia Eagles 31

What you need to know

Green Bay Packers

The Packers were without RB Ahman Green (hamstring) but played well in the first half of the game and went into the locker room with a 9-7 lead.

QB Brett Favre started well but had a bad night overall, throwing two interceptions and failing to find the end zone. He also suffered an apparent head / shoulder injury near the end of the game and was replaced by Aaron Rodgers with the game out of reach.

RB Vernand Morency started in the absence of Ahman Green and had 99 yards rushing. He had four carries from the two yard line at the end of the game but was unable to score.

WR Donald Driver was the most heavily targeted receiver for the Packers but he had two important drops and only gained 50 yards on the night. WR Greg Jennings was also a big part of the offense, ending with five receptions for 86 yards. WR Robert Ferguson returned to the game after suffering a rib injury but then left for good when he hurt his foot.

The Packers’ defense sacked McNabb four times and recovered two fumbles, but they were unable to stop McNabb and the Eagles from having a big second half.

Philadelphia Eagles

RB Brian Westbrook was inactive for the game due to swelling in his knee. Cornerbacks Lito Sheppard and Roderick Hood were also inactive.

QB Donovan McNabb struggled to adjust to the loss of Brian Westbrook in the first half, but he carried the team after the interval. McNabb kept up his fast start to the year, throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns as well as running for two scores of his own.

RB Correll Buckhalter started the game for the Eagles. He averaged 4.5 yards per carry and had the longest reception of his career (28 yards). But Buckhalter fumbled the ball away at the Packers’ four yard line and also failed to take a hand off from McNabb which resulted in another fumble. RB Ryan Moats was given a bigger role than Buckhalter in the second half.

No receiver had more than three receptions for the Eagles. WR Greg Lewis was targeted twice in the game, and both were caught for long touchdowns. WR Donte Stallworth suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and was held to one catch. Reggie Brown injured his shoulder towards the end of the game.

The Eagles’ defense did not pressure Brett Favre effectively in the first half, but did a much better job in the second half. Favre lost a fumble when attempting to hand off to Vernand Morency, and also threw two interceptions. His misery was complete when he was hit on the shoulder in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Aaron Rodgers.

What you ought to know

QB Brett Favre, Pass: 22 - 44 - 205 - 0 TD / 2 INT, Rush: 1 - 0 - 0

Brett Favre managed the game well during the first half. On the Packers’ second drive, Favre found Greg Jennings for a 22 yard gain and then targeted Donald Driver on three consecutive plays in the end zone. The first ball was overthrown, but Driver simply dropped the second pass. The final effort was caught by Driver and he appeared to be forced out by the defenders but didn’t get the call. Favre struggled as the game began to get out of reach, and he only completed seven of 18 passes in the second half. He was unlucky to be intercepted on a tipped ball, but was at fault for a second interception as he chased the game. He threw another interception but it was ruled out after a defensive pass interference call. Favre also fumbled a hand off to Vernand Morency. With a little over four minutes left in the game, Favre was hit while throwing and left the game with a head / shoulder injury. It was reported as a slight head injury, but Favre was talking to the coaches and pointing at his shoulder.

QB Aaron Rodgers, Pass: 2 - 3 - 14 - 0 TD / 0 INT

Rodgers entered the game for the final four minutes after Brett Favre suffered an apparent head / shoulder injury. He only attempted three passes, completing two and drawing a pass interference call after Greg Jennings was impeded at the two yard line on what would have been a touchdown.

RB Vernand Morency, Rush: 26 - 99 - 0, Rec: 6 - 19 - 0 (7 targets)

With Ahman Green missing the game, Morency was given all but one of the carries. He was reasonably effective and was able to convert eight first downs and stop the Eagles from playing pass coverage on every down. Morency did not have a run longer than ten yards but he averaged almost four yards per carry. Favre fumbled a hand off which Morency was unable to retrieve. He was targeted seven times, catching six passes for a total of 19 yards. In the closing moments, Morency was given four consecutive carries from the two yard line. He gained a yard and was then stopped for no gain on three straight carries.

RB Brandon Miree, Rec: 2 - 9 - 0 (2 targets)

Miree caught both passes thrown his way for a total of nine yards, converting a first down on one of them.

RB Noah Herron, Rush: 1 - 0 - 0

Herron had one carry for no gain and was not targeted in the passing game.

RB Ahman Green

He was expected to play, but Green was surprisingly declared inactive for the game due to a hamstring injury.

WR Donald Driver, Rec: 5 - 50 - 0 (13 targets)

Driver was Favre’s favorite receiver but he did not have a good game. On the opening drive, Favre targeted him three times in the end zone. The first pass was uncatchable, but Driver dropped the second when open. He caught the third attempt but appeared to be forced out of the back of the end zone and didn’t get the call. At least four of Driver’s targets were uncatchable, but he did have a second bad drop later in the game. He had one long gain of 26 yards but his other receptions were all short gains. Driver was hurt on a hit by Sean Considine, but he quickly returned to the game.

WR Greg Jennings, Rec: 5 - 86 - 0 (11 targets)

Jennings appeared to be Favre’s receiver of choice when big plays were called for. Jennings had almost as many targets as Driver and did more with them in this game. He caught a 22 yard pass to give the Packers a first down on their second drive and had a 20 yard reception for a first down later in the half. Both drives ended in field goals. Jennings saw less action in the second half but managed to make a 30 yard reception on the Packer’s opening drive of the half. Jennings was grabbed by his shirt at the goal line which prevented him catching an Aaron Rodgers pass in garbage time.

WR Koren Robinson, Rec: 2 - 23 - 0 (7 targets)

Robinson was targeted once in the first half, making the catch for a 12 yard gain and a first down. He was used a lot more in the second half. A 21 yard reception was ruled out for offensive pass interference. Robinson’s only other catch was for an 11 yard gain and a first down on the Packers’ final drive of the game. Robinson also returned three kicks.

WR Robert Ferguson (1 targets)

Ferguson was only targeted once in the game and was unable to make the catch. He was hurt on a special teams play and had to have his ribs x-rayed. He returned to the game but left for good after hurting his foot.

TE Bubba Franks, Rec: 3 - 32 - 0 (7 targets)

Franks made a 15 yard reception during the Packers’ final drive of the first half to set up a field goal try. He dropped a pass later on the same drive. Franks caught two passes in the second half, one of which brought up a first down.

TE David Martin, Rec: 1 - 0 - 0 (2 targets)

Martin was targeted twice in the game. He caught the first for no gain while the second was underthrown and resulted in an interception.

PK Dave Rayner 3 - 4 FG, 0 - 0 XP, 9 points

Rayner made field goals of 23 yards, 54 yards and 46 yards in the first half before missing a 54 yard attempt on the opening drive of the second half. He had never previously kicked a field goal of 40 yards or longer.

GB Rush Defense

The Packers did reasonably well against the run, giving up 99 net rushing yards. They forced Correll Buckhalter to fumble at their four yard line and recovered the ball. The Eagles did convert eight first downs on the ground and Donovan McNabb scrambled for two touchdowns.

GB Pass Defense

The Packers gave up too many big plays in the passing game. CB Ahmad Carroll was frequently beaten and the Eagles had gains of 20 yards or more from six different receivers. It could have been even worse as Donte Stallworth was overthrown by a yard after beating Carroll for what would have been a 54 yard touchdown. Reggie Brown drew a pass interference call after being prevented from making a 44 yard catch. This looks like a weak spot for the Packers’ defense. The pass rush was good and McNabb was sacked four times.

QB Donovan McNabb, Pass: 16 - 30 - 288 - 2 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 5 - 47 - 2

McNabb started the game well, completing a 26 yard pass to Donte’ Stallworth on the Eagles’ second drive. He then found Buckhalter on a 28 yard screen and L.J. Smith for a 21 yard gain. McNabb ran six yards for the only touchdown of the first half. With the running game struggling, McNabb carried the team in the second half. He ran for two first downs on the opening drive of the half to set up a field goal. On the next drive, he found Greg Lewis for a 45 yard score. McNabb almost connected with Reggie Brown for what should have been a 44 yard touchdown, but Brown was interfered with and dropped the ball. McNabb then immediately threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Greg Lewis. McNabb ran for his second touchdown of the day on the Eagles’ fourth possession of the half. His only bad play came when he fumbled a hand off to Correll Buckhalter but McNabb was superb in this game.

QB Jeff Garcia, Pass: 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 2 - 1 - 0

Garcia entered the game with six minutes to go with the game safe for the Eagles. He attempted one pass which fell incomplete, and also fumbled an intended hand off with Ryan Moats which Moats recovered.

RB Correll Buckhalter, Rush: 11 - 49 - 0, Rec: 2 - 39 - 0 (3 targets)

With Brian Westbrook missing the game, Buckhalter started for the Eagles. He converted a first down on the Eagles’ second drive but then failed to gather a hand off from McNabb and the Packers recovered. Buckhalter took a screen pass for 28 yards on the following drive; the longest reception of his career. But on the fourth possession, Buckhalter was wholly responsible for another fumble and the Packers again recovered. Buckhalter caught an 11 yard pass for a first down in the third quarter, and had a 16 yard run at the end of the quarter for the longest running play of the day.

RB Ryan Moats, Rush: 7 - 22 - 0 (1 targets)

Moats was not used in the first half, but he entered the game in the third quarter. He was able to convert two first downs on the Eagles’ opening drive of the second half, leading to a field goal. He was targeted once but did not make the catch.

RB Brian Westbrook

Westbrook was expected to play but tested his swollen knee before the game but decided he was unable to play and was inactive for the game.

WR Reggie Brown, Rush: 1 - 8 - 0, Rec: 3 - 63 - 0 (10 targets)

Brown saw the most targets for the Eagles after Donte Stallworth sat out much of the second half with a hamstring injury. Brown dropped the first ball thrown his way and two other first half targets were uncatchable. He was able to make a 31 yard reception on the final drive of the first half. Brown might have had a 44 yard touchdown in the second half, but the defender interfered and Brown drew the penalty. He also had a 23 yard gain on the following drive. Brown was used on a double reverse early in the game, gaining eight yards on the play. He suffered a shoulder injury towards the end of the game.

WR Hank Baskett, Rec: 2 - 27 - 0 (4 targets)

Baskett’s four targets came in the first half. He caught two for a total of 27 yards, the longest of which was a 22 yard gain on the Eagles’ final drive of the half.

WR Greg Lewis, Rec: 2 - 75 - 2 (2 targets)

Lewis was not targeted until the Eagles’ third possession of the second half. He responded by making the catch for a 45 yard touchdown. On the next drive he was targeted for a second time, making the catch for a 30 yard score.

WR Donte Stallworth, Rec: 1 - 26 - 0 (6 targets)

Stallworth was able to start the game for the Eagles after recovering from a hamstring injury. He made a 26 yard reception with a great diving catch to give the Eagles their opening first down of the game. It looked as if the ball touched the ground but no challenge was made. Stallworth drew a face mask penalty for another first down on the same drive. Later in the half, Stallworth was overthrown by a yard after beating CB Ahmad Carroll. If he had caught the ball it would likely have resulted in a 54 yard touchdown. Stallworth was only targeted once in the second half and sat out much of it after a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

TE L.J. Smith, Rec: 2 - 38 - 0 (4 targets)

Smith saw his first target of the game on the Eagles’ fourth drive and he duly converted a third down play with a 17 yard reception. He followed that with a 21 yard reception to give the Eagles a first down at the four yard line, but Buckhalter fumbled the ball away. Smith dropped an easy pass at the one yard line on the Eagles’ next possession and was also unable to catch his only target of the second half.

TE Matt Schobel, Rec: 1 - 11 - 0 (1 targets)

Schobel was targeted by kicker David Akers at the end of the first half. Akers had the opportunity to try a 54 yard field goal, but threw to Schobel for an 11 yard gain as time expired.

PK David Akers 1 - 1 FG, 4 - 4 XP, 7 points

Akers set up to attempt a 54 yard field goal at the end of the first half, but decided to throw the ball instead. He found TE Matt Schobel for an 11 yard gain as the clock ran out. Akers made a 40 yard field goal in the second half and converted all of his extra point attempts.

PHI Rush Defense

The Eagles held the Packers to less than four yards per carry and recovered a fumble when Brett Favre failed to hand off cleanly to Vernand Morency. They didn’t give up a running play longer than ten yards and were able to keep the Packers from scoring at the end of the game when Morency had four attempts from the two yard line.

PHI Pass Defense

The Eagles did not generate much pressure on Brett Favre in the first half but they did a much better job after the interval. Despite giving up four plays of 20 yards or more, the Eagles pressured Favre into errors. He was intercepted twice and a third interception was negated by a penalty. The Eagles did not manage a sack, but DE Juqua Thomas hit Favre in the fourth quarter and caused him to leave the game with what looked like a shoulder injury. SS Michael Lewis missed some time in the second half but was able to return to the game and make an interception.
