Week 9 Players in the News

The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Charlie Frye (CLE) will be permitted more freedom under the team's new offensive coordinator, Jeff Davidson. Frye will be allowed to call audibles more frequently during games. "What I've told (Frye) is that whether he's in the huddle or taking a snap from center, he's our coach on the field," Davidson said. "Once he enters the huddle, he's the only one that talks and that's the way our offense wants it to be. I think that's important. He's the guy that controls everything on the play, whether it's an exchange with the halfback or throwing the ball downfield."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Jon Kitna (DET) believes he is going to have the best season of his 11-year career in 2006. Kitna also feels the team's offense is going to flourish over the final two months of the year because of offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Kitna said, "It's coach Martz, to be honest. If I had had coach Martz earlier in my career, or even five months ago, I don't know if I would've been ready for that kind of coaching yet. Having been through what I've been through in the league and now having an opportunity to play for a guy like him and the way he coaches the position, it's everything I've been looking for. I didn't realize how drastically different he coaches the position. That's what I love. I love the system and things will continue to get better as the season goes on."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Byron Leftwich (JAX) HC Jack Del Rio reiterated on Friday that Byron Leftwich will continue be the Jags starting quarterback when he returns to health. Backup David Garrard, for the second consecutive week, will start Sunday when the Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans. But that doesn't mean Leftwich has lost his starting job for the season, Del Rio said. "Byron [Leftwich] continues to be our quarterback," Del Rio said. "I've said that for four years. If there's a change, I'll let everyone know."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) Broncos DE Ebenezer Ekuban says he’s glad Roethlisberger is starting for the Steelers this week. "I'd rather face Ben than Charlie Batch just because of how their offense has been doing with Charlie Batch in there," Ekuban said. "Nothing against Ben - he's a Super Bowl quarterback. But you know what? The tape doesn't lie."

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) was a third-down running back early in his career. Now, as the Vikings' starter, Taylor is coming off the field on third downs, being replaced by RB Mewelde Moore. Taylor doesn't seem to mind. "That helps me out a lot, especially toward the end of the season, as far as my body being fresh," Taylor said. "(Moore) does a great job when he comes in there. He ain't missing a beat. He's a great attribute for us on third downs."

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Devin Hester (CHI) was added to the injury report as questionable after missing practice Friday with a tight hamstring. But the NFL’s top punt returner is expected to play Sunday when the Bears host the Dolphins. "It’s feeling pretty good," Hester said Friday afternoon. "They’re just giving me a little rest. It kind of tightened up a little bit, but it’s pretty good now. I’ll be ready to go by Sunday."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Terry Glenn (DAL) was added to the injury report as probable with a quadraceps issue. Check our Sunday Update page before the game Sunday to get the official word about his status. Some reports are saying he'll be a game time decision.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Joe Horn (NO) practiced Friday but keep an eye on him to see how he's able to warm up before Sunday's game. It's a 1 PM start, so check the Sunday Update page to get official word on Horn's status before the game. If he isn't able to go, that would obviously mean more time for Devery Henderson.

Tight End

Kicker

Offensive Line

Defensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** DL Gerard Warren (DEN) It looks like the Broncos will have Warren on the field Sunday at Pittsburgh. "He will play," Denver HC Mike Shanahan said Friday. Shanahan said he felt comfortable with Warren's playing status after the he worked all week in practice.

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Pisa Tinoisamoa (STL) will suit up on Sunday, but Dexter Coakley will probably start in his place at weak-side linebacker. "I don't know how much he'll play," HC Scott Linehan said of Tinoisamoa, who has a broken bone in his left hand. "We still have to determine that. We'll probably start Coakley just because of the reps that he's gotten this week. Pisa will be available, and he's probably more ready to play this week than he was last week."

Defensive Back

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) In a surprise move, the Vikings cut third-year S Rashad Baker today. The team did not make any announcements. But Baker's agent, Troy Archie, said his client has been waived. Baker, who had been inactive six of seven games this season, might have had a disagreement with an assistant coach, Archie said.

Quarterback

*** Friday Update *** QB Anthony Wright (CIN) practiced on Friday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Anthony Wright (CIN) practiced on Thursday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Anthony Wright (CIN) will be available to play for the team in Week 9, if needed. Wright has not been available since undergoing an emergency appendectomy on October 13.

QB David Carr (HOU) was benched Sunday due to poor performance by head coach Gary Kubiak. But there are teammates who still support Carr as the team's starter. "We're going to ride with Carr because he's the starter, and we believe he can get the job done," cornerback Dunta Robinson said. "You can't sit a guy after one bad half. Dave was coming off a great game against Jacksonville, and there's no way you throw a guy under the bus for one bad half."

*** Thursday Update *** QB David Garrard (JAX) will make his second consecutive start at quarterback in place of Byron Leftwich on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars host Tennessee. Leftwich said Thursday that HC Jack Del Rio told him before practice he was sticking with Garrard, who led the Jaguars to a 13-6 victory at Philadelphia last week and improved to 5-1 as a starter the past two seasons. "All I know is that I was told I won't be the starter on Sunday," Leftwich said. "So now is the time to get the ankle healthy. But me personally, I'd be lying to you if I said I couldn't start. I feel I could go out there and play well, but we'll see." Del Rio has repeatedly said that Leftwich, if healthy, would be the starter. Leftwich declared himself healthy enough to play earlier this week and said he practiced without pain Wednesday. "I went out there and moved around pretty good," said Leftwich, who was downgraded to questionable Thursday. "It didn't feel 100 percent, but believe me, it's ready to roll. It's a little sore. I'm just trying to figure out what's going on. Right now, it's just frustrating because I'm missing an opportunity to play when I feel as if I can play."

Del Rio's decision could create a full-fledged quarterback controversy in Jacksonville and possibly sour his relationship with Leftwich, who said he wasn't given a reason for the move. "I'm a great interpreter and I don't know how to interpret it right now," Leftwich said. "All I know is that I need to get the ankle healthy right now. It's frustrating, but it's something I've got to deal with. I've been through worse. I'll battle through this and we'll see what happens." Garrard was equally puzzled by the decision. "It's hard for me to say anything because no one is being definitive on anything -- if it's Byron's health, it's performance or whatever," Garrard said. "I can't give you any explanation on why all of this is occurring. Until someone with greater power than me can tell you, I can only say I'm not sure."

*** Friday Update *** QB Byron Leftwich (JAX) did not practice on Friday and will not start this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Byron Leftwich (JAX) was downgraded to questionable for this weekend. He was also told that David Garrard would start for the team.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Byron Leftwich (JAX) returned to practice on Wednesday. While he maintains he's healthy enough to play, HC Jack Del Rio has not named a starter yet. The QBs both expected Leftwich to be the starter against the Titans this week. Backup David Garrard indicated he expected to be back on the bench this week when the team faced the 2-5 Tennessee Titans. "I'm in the same situation I was in last week," Garrard said. "My feeling is if he's healthy, he's going to be the starting quarterback."

*** Friday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) is going to be the third QB for Sunday's game in St. Louis. Edwards said it would take “dire, dire, dire, dire conditions" for Green to play, saying he wouldn't even play him if he were down 200 points. Edwards just wants to ease Green back into everything and is doing this to "get him acclimated going out in the warm-ups with the team."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) took another step in his long recovery Wednesday, by participating in 7-on-7 drills for the first time since early September. Green was evaluated again this week but still hasn’t been given clearance to play, and as expected, he won’t play this Sunday against his old team, St. Louis. "He looked good," Chiefs HC Herm Edwards said. "He gave us a good look as a Rams quarterback."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) is still experiencing continued soreness in the patellar tendon of his right knee. It has the Dolphins beginning to consider placing him on the injured reserve list, which would end his season. He was benched after Week 4 this season for not being able to perform at his expected level because of the injury. He's since suffered at least two setbacks after starting a new rehabilitation program on his surgically repaired knee. Culpepper has been serving as the third-sting quarterback but was inactive last week at Miami. He missed much of Wednesday's practice and was wearing a minimum contact jersey during today's drills, suggesting he would either get little or no practice time.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) did not practice on Wednesday and will remain the team’s #3 QB this weekend.

QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) Monday was the one-year anniversary that Daunte Culpepper tore three ligaments in his right knee. Many medical people feel the injury takes at least a year to mend. But, Culpepper rushed back to start the first four games of the season, before being shut down. HC Nick Saban said Monday that Culpepper continues to experience soreness in the surgically repaired knee, and Culpepper once again was held out of practice. Said Saban: " It's the work he does to try to strengthen it and some of the rehab that he's doing is making him little bit sore. That soreness makes it a little harder to do the stuff he needs to do in football."

QB Brad Johnson (MIN) HC Brad Childress made abundantly clear in his press conference that veteran quarterback Brad Johnson will remain the team's starter. But, Childress also won't continue to tolerate mistakes. "You got to take care of the football," Childress said. "That's not negotiable." Later, when asked about his philosophy of benching a quarterback, Childress said, "I'm not a short-hook guy."

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Friday and will start this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Thursday and will start as normal this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Wednesday and will start as normal this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Matt Cassel (NE) practiced on Friday and will be able to play this weekend.

QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) has been cleared to practice in full-squad drills for the first time since his injury. "My concern is getting back to the point before I got (hurt)," Brooks said Monday. "I don't ever want to get out there and say one thing and end up hurting the team." HC Art Shell said that Andrew Walter is the starting quarterback until Brooks can do everything that a quarterback is supposed to do.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) HC Bill Cowher said Tuesday he has no intention of changing quarterbacks. But Roethlisberger said if his coach wants Batch, he would support his decision. "I want what's best for the team. If that's Charlie Batch being in there, then that's Charlie Batch being in there," Roethlisberger said. "I want what's best for this team to help it win. I'm not going to cry and complain about getting pulled. My job is to go out and play good football, so that there isn't even a decision to be made." Roethlisberger, though, disputed his coach's words a day earlier that he was trying to do too much. "Not really. You have confidence. You ask any quarterback out there. Charlie will laugh with me when I come off the field. He'll say, 'I can tell you're feeling it. You're making throws that normally, most people don't throw,'" said Roethlisberger. "I felt that good against Kansas City and against Atlanta. You get into a rhythm and you feel good. People forget that the last two years we were pretty good. Last year, we won a Super Bowl, I think. It worked out for us. The coaches call a good game plan that we put together and we do a good job of preparation all week. It's time for me to start transitioning that to Sunday."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) did not practice on Wednesday and will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chris Simms (TB) remains out after his splenectomy.

*** Friday Update *** QB Mark Brunell (WAS) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Mark Brunell (WAS) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Mark Brunell (WAS) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend.

QB Mark Brunell (WAS) HC Joe Gibbs reiterated on Monday that there was no change at the quarterback position. Mark Brunell, despite being slowed by a strained rib muscle, is expected to draw the start against the Cowboys. He is expected to return to practice on Wednesday. "I think we have a good plan with what we laid out [at quarterback]," Gibbs said. "Nothing has changed with our quarterback situation. We will see how Mark feels on Wednesday."

*** Thursday Update *** RB B.J. Sams (BAL) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB DeAngelo Williams (CAR) felt big Ted Washington on his right leg and thought his rookie season might be over. The Panthers rookie running back heard a pop and thought the 365-pound Washington had broken his ankle. "I looked back and I saw him and I said, 'Oh no,"' Williams said. "You think I'm going to pull it back and I'm going to have that 'Pirates of the Caribbean' leg." His hairbreadth escape from a peg leg came Oct. 8 as Carolina played Cleveland. "I waited until the (training staff) came out there, and I asked them, 'Is it still on there?"' Williams said. "Of course, I thought it was broken, but it wasn't. It was a high ankle sprain on both sides, and I'm coming through it all right now." Williams has come back slowly from the injury. He practiced two of the three days last week, but missed his third straight game in the loss to Dallas. Williams practiced both days this week, and hopes to be able to give the Panthers' struggling offense a boost when they return after their bye to face Tampa Bay on Nov. 13. "Going back to giving them a spark, hopefully. That's what I'm here for," Williams said.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Jason McKie (CHI) The Bears announced on Thursday that they have signed fullback Jason McKie to a five-year contract extension. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

RB Rudi Johnson (CIN) Johnson aired some complaints about not seeing the ball enough. "There's too much going on, trying to do too much," said Johnson, who gained more than 1,400 rushing yards the past two seasons and has 552 yards on 142 carries this season. "Stick with what's working. If you're trying to win the ball game, stick with what's working. You know what I mean?

"If they find a way to stop it, then you change up. You change up throughout the game, but don't just cold turkey something for no reason."

*** Friday Update *** RB Tatum Bell (DEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend although he's not 100%. Whether he or Mike Bell gets the start is unclear at this time although the feeling is that Mike Bell would see more time.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Tatum Bell (DEN) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend. However, his toe is still hurting, so it looks like he’ll be less than 100%.

RB Tatum Bell (DEN) Tatum Bell sounded like he's accepting the idea that Mike Bell could continue to carry the load. "I would expect Mike to get in there and try to help me get back," Tatum Bell said. "The way he's running, hopefully he can carry it on through this next week. There won't be no drop-off if I'm not in there because we know Mike is going to come in there and get it done."

*** Friday Update *** RB Cedric Cobbs (DEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

The Packers only have Ahman Green and backup Noah Herron available for the Bills game and would like to have another back available in case there is another injury. The 5-9, 218-pound Pope was signed off the Bears practice squad Tuesday to help fill the void left by Vernand Morency's injury.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Priest Holmes (KC) wants to play again. And he wants to do it in 2006. Holmes, who is currently on the PUP list, hasn't played since week 7 of the 2005 season when he suffered a severe neck injury. Holmes hasn't been around the team, but he's been working out and staying in shape. Carl Peterson, Chiefs' President and GM refuses to make a prediction regarding the RB saying, "Other times before, there were a lot of media, a lot of fans that said he would never, never play football again when he had his hip surgery and he came back and scored (27) touchdowns, set the NFL record."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Reggie Bush (NO) practiced on Thursday and barring a setback is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Reggie Bush (NO) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend.

RB Reggie Bush (NO) said his left ankle injury against Baltimore was more of an aggravation of a sprain that occurred in Week 1 at Cleveland, something he expects to keep playing with. "I'll be ready for Tampa," Bush said Monday between meetings and treatment at the New Orleans Saints' training headquarters. The sprain is "something that's kind of been lingering since that first game and hasn't been 100 percent since," Bush said. "I've just been kind of playing through it. It just kept getting better and better every week, and I got to the point where I was feeling pretty good, and now I'm right back to the point where I started. "But even then I was able to play through it, so it's really just a matter of me taking care of it," Bush said.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Jim Finn (NYG) did not practice on Wednesday but is still expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) finally surrendering to his surgically repaired knee and has decided to end his comeback attempt for 2006. Martin was placed on the Reserved/PUP list Wednesday. The move means Martin will not participate the rest of this season. “It is not retirement. It is Reserved PUP which means he will not be able to participate this season," HC Eric Mangini said. "He will still be part of the team. He will still take part in all the meetings and help us in any way he can.” It sounds as if the future Hall of Famer is leaning towards retiring. "Retirement may be the inevitable result of this, but I'm not retiring right now," Martin said. "If I don't play again, the doctors say I have a chance to live a normal life. If I do play again, I can jeopardize that."

RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) According to a report in the Newark Star-Ledger, New York Jets running back Curtis Martin will not play through the remainder of the 2006 season and is likely through playing for his career, according to several players and a team official. "(Curtis) told me he's done," said one unnamed player. "He said he has bone-on-bone and he can't cut. Besides, he's not in any type of shape to play. The only way he would play is by some type of miracle. I think he's going to concentrate on his business opportunities. He feels he can make more money off the field than on it." However, the Jets insisted Curtis Martin has not yet decided to end his season, despite a published report Tuesday that the NFL's No. 4 career rusher has told members of the team he won't return this year. "There has been no decision," HC Eric Mangini said when addressing the story in The Star-Ledger.

*** Thursday Update *** RB LaMont Jordan (OAK) practiced on Thursday but remains questionable for this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Najeh Davenport (PIT) is preparing for what could be his new role on his new team, that of third-down back. Davenport already knows the role of a third-down back the way the Steelers use one. The Steelers don't ask their third-down back to run much or catch much. What they want him to do is block well. RB Willie Parker is ideal for the third-down role because of his quickness, his smarts and his ability to pick up the blitz. But the Steelers don't want to play him every down, so they are more likely to turn to Davenport to fill that role.

*** Friday Update *** RB Dan Kreider (PIT) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Dan Kreider (PIT) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Dan Kreider (PIT) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) did not practice on Wednesday and will not play this weekend.

RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) will not play this week vs. the Oakland Raiders. "The medical people are reluctant to give me the green light on Shaun after what they saw on the (MRI, X-rays)," HC Mike Holmgren said. "He is getting better. He is feeling better."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) had an off game last week including a muffed punt return. After the game he indicated he won't be returning punts again, "That'll be my last time back there." When asked who made that decision, he replied, "The last time I checked, I've only got one person to answer to. That's my maker." HC John Fox responded on the topic, "I don't know what he [Smith] said after the game, but that could have been in frustration. I haven't talked to him about it. He was very open minded to do it in that game. We'll revisit that as we move forward."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chad Johnson (CIN) Paying up on a bet with Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall, Chad Johnson shaved off his blonde Mohawk. "The whole deal last week was if we lost to Atlanta that I would cut the Mohawk, but if we won, then DeAngelo would have to work at Big Willy's Fatburger," Johnson said of teammate Willie Anderson's Atlanta restaurant.

"Maybe with the change with the Mohawk, everything will change around here," the receiver said Wednesday. Owens downplayed the report Friday. "As long as I don't sleep on Sunday," the Dallas Cowboys receiver said as he left the locker room at the team's practice facility. As is customary on Friday, he did not conduct interviews. The receiver said in Friday's editions of The Dallas Morning News that he informed the Cowboys about a sleeping problem before signing with them. "It's nothing new for me to fall asleep in a meeting," he said. Owens said the problem dates to the first stop of his career in San Francisco, where he said receivers coach George Stewart thought he was staying up too late. "When I did get to bed early, I would still get to meetings and fall asleep, and it's the same thing here," Owens said. Owens said he hasn't been staying out late. He acknowledged that his sleeping habit irks Cowboys passing game coordinator Todd Haley, who had a run-in with Owens at practice earlier this season. "At some point, give me a little vet credit," Owens said. "But I understand (Haley) wants me to be a professional and be a standup guy for the younger guys on the team." Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it was an issue of "personal health" that wouldn't be discussed outside the team. "I don't say that as though it's something that's irritating at all," Jones said.

And for me as a coach, I have to see that quicker and take that burden off him when he's struggling like that.
