Week 4 Players in the News

The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Vince Young (TEN) will get his first NFL start Sunday. Kerry Collins moves to the #2 QB and Young gets his shot as the starter.

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ahman Green (GB) has been downgraded to questionable for his week four game after tweaking his hamstring in Friday's practice. We never like to see a downgrade this late in the week, but Green played last week as a questionable. Green played with a tender hamstring last week, but coach Mike McCarthy said this injury is his other hamstring.

"I'm hopeful he's going to play, just based on the information we have," McCarthy said. "But it's just part of our game. We have to get Mo and Noah ready to go."

The team will make a decision on his playing status Monday evening.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) may lose carries to Samkon Gado as coach Gary Kubiak says he wants to split the carries evenly between Gado and Dayne. Said Kubiak, “Yeah, I want to play them both (Dayne and Samkon Gado). I want to play them right down the middle. We have not been in a situation to do that. We’re going to try everything we can this Sunday to do that. (RB) Samkon (Gado) has practiced excellent. I would like to see them both carry the ball 12 to 15 times each, and then be able to evaluate them on a week-to-week basis. Hopefully we’re heading in a direction to do that.”

*** Saturday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) should see more action this week splitting carries more evenly with Ron Dayne. Said coach Gary Kubiak, “Yeah, I want to play them both (Dayne and Samkon Gado).

*** Saturday Update *** RB Sammy Morris (MIA) will come off of his four-game suspension on Monday.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) practiced Saturday and is looking like he'll play Monday.

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Antonio Chatman (CIN) has yet to see action this season after the Bengals signed him as a free agent this offseason. He has been rehabbing a nursed groin. That could finally change this Sunday as he prepares to take part in the return game. Chatman could also be used on offense. There has been no word on whether or not Chris Henry will be disciplined or not for his involvement with the recent Odell Thurman arrest.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Chris Henry (CIN) There still is no word on whether Henry will be benched this weekend for his involvement in the Odell Thurman arrest. For his part, HC Marvin Lewis says, "I'll do the inactives when I do the inactives. I don't tell anybody who's going to be playing on Sunday. Why would I start now? It's not to my advantage to tell anybody who's playing."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) There isn't anything official yet but the buzz we're hearing is that Owens will start Sunday. We'll have the official word for you before kickoff Sunday. Check the Sunday Updates online.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Edell Shepherd (HOU) will return kicks Week 4, according to HC Gary Kubiak.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) practiced Saturday but is sounding less sure about playing Monday. When asked if he'd be ready Monday night, he said, "I can't say right now. Each day it's getting better."

*** Saturday Update *** DB Justin Hamilton (CLE) has been downgraded to out for the team's Week 4 game.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Marlin Jackson (IND) did not travel with the team and obviously will not play this weekend. Kelvin Hayden will start in his place.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Kerry Rhodes (NYJ) has missed practice all week, but he still expects to start in week four.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Clinton Hart (SD) gets his chance with the first unit after starter Terrence Kiel was arrested on Tuesday on five felony drug charges. When Kiel returns remains a mystery, but it's no farfetched guess that Hart's time has come. "It's bittersweet," said Hart, who started three games at free safety and two at strong last year. "But I have to focus on being able to step in and bring what he brought to this defense. I just have something to prove and I have to go out and do what I can do to and help us get to where we need to be. And that is 3-0."

*** Saturday Update *** DB PacMan Jones (TEN) is eager to square off with Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens, who is questionable for Week 4. "I had this game circled on my calendar. This was my Pro Bowl," Jones said. "I am ready. I'm excited. I just have to make sure I tackle him. He gets yards after the catch. I just have to make sure when he catches the ball I have to get him down."

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Chicago Bears (CHI) John Gilmore and Gabe Reid will fill the void if starting TE Desmond Clark is unable to go against the Seahawks this Sunday. “It would be a great opportunity for them,” said QB Rex Grossman, “I know what they can do, and they can step up and play extremely well.” Clark is a game-time decision.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Seattle Seahawks (SEA) The Seattle Seahawks cut special teams captain Isaiah Kacyvenski on Saturday to add depth at running back while league MVP Shaun Alexander rehabs his broken foot. Seattle needed a running back behind fill-in starter Maurice Morris for its game at fellow unbeaten Chicago on Sunday night. So the Seahawks added practice-squad member Marquis Weeks, who impressed them in their exhibition finale, to their 53-man roster.

All the news

Quarterback

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Kurt Warner (ARI) HC Dennis Green tried to explain how a report had surfaced that he had decided to bench Warner in favor of the rookie Leinart and his subsequent decision to release a statement Tuesday that Warner was still the starter. While an admittedly impatient Green may have been ready to bench Warner in the immediate aftermath of the quarterback's mistake-filled game against St. Louis, the coach had thought better of it by Tuesday. "I can be emotional, but not in my decision-making," Green said after Wednesday's practice. "I've got too much experience for that. So I felt that Kurt Warner is still the right guy and the best guy. I think he's the best quarterback on this team." Warner acknowledged it had been a tough couple of days since Sunday's 16-14 loss to the Rams. "Obviously it's really hard on my family and that's what I worry about more than anything," he said. "They hear a lot of that stuff, and you don't know what to believe, and your kids hear something at school and your wife hears something." But Warner said he never thought he had lost the job because he hadn't heard it from his coaches. "I was under the assumption I was the starter until I heard different and that's how I'm always going to approach it," he said.

QB Kurt Warner (ARI) will remain the starter for the Arizona Cardinals. "Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," HC Dennis Green said. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."

*** Friday Update *** QB Jake Plummer (DEN) formally agreed to a plea deal Friday after being accused of damaging the license plate holder of another driver during a road rage incident. Plummer accepted deferred prosecution, which means he won't be charged with wrongdoing if he stays out of trouble for the next nine months. His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg paid a total of $76 in restitution and court fees.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) says the severe concussion that left him unconscious on Sept. 10 will keep him sidelined at least two more weeks. Green said that being back by October 8th would not "be reasonable." "They're going to want me to practice at least some prior to that point. I know I won't practice this week. It remains to be seen if I'm going to do any next week. So considering by that point in time I will have missed three weeks, to all of a sudden practice and play in one week, that would be reaching."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) is still out but will return sometime this season, according to head coach Herman Edwards and president/general manager Carl Peterson.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) did not practice on Wednesday and will not be available to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Thursday and will start as normal this weekend.

QB Tom Brady (NE) looks like a guy that is carrying a heavy burden. According to Tom Curran of NBC.com, the Patriots worked out quarterback Vinny Testaverde Tuesday. Whether that’s a sign of an injury to Tom Brady or just that he needs someone to talk to is anyone’s best guess. The Pats seemed comfortable with Matt Cassel as the No. 2 guy coming out of training camp. They also worked out Tommy Maddox recently.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) practiced again on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend. He's listed as probable with a calf issue.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) While recovering from his second shoulder injury, New York Jets QB Chad Pennington watched a lot of tape of himself throwing. "The one thing that the shoulder injury did do for me, and really having two shoulder injuries, it really showed some flaws in my mechanics," Pennington said Wednesday. "I always thought I used my body well to throw, but I really didn't. I was really an arm thrower, and that's why the ball would die on me a lot." Pennington's 103.4 passer rating is third in the AFC.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) will not play this weekend.

QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) will miss another week with his rotator cuff injury.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) HC Bill Cowher has asked QB Ben Roethlisberger to take more chances out of the pocket and return to his roots a bit by running when the opportunity presents itself. Roethlisberger, in the worst slump of his career, had 144 rushing yards his rookie year, 69 last year and an additional 37 during post season play. He has -1 rushing yards after two games this season. Cowher is also encouraging his prize QB to put on some more weight since losing 15 pounds after his motorcycle accident in June. "We've talked about it. I am encouraging him to make sure he eats snacks at night,” Cowher said.

*** Friday Update *** QB Bruce Gradkowski (TB) HC John Gruden has this to say about his offense adjusting to new QB Gradkowski - "The QB changes your offense. Unfortunately, this will be the 6th QB we’ve started in just over four years. And nothing is ever the same when you change QB." Michael Clayton added, "It’s going to take some hard work. [Bruce] has a little bit different ball than Chris. He doesn't have as much velocity as Chris, but his [pass] comes out a little quicker – just getting used to that. It’s going to take some hard work, but we’ll get it and won’t have any problems getting used to that."

*** Friday Update *** QB Luke McCown (TB) is working hard even though he’s on the PUP list. McCown was the last player off the practice field Thursday after throwing 70 passes to various receivers in an effort to get his conditioning back. The 3rd-year veteran wants to remain an option for the Bucs as they prepare to go on without starter Chris Simms.

QB Chris Simms (TB) had his spleen removed after he was pummeled repeatedly in the Buccaneers narrow loss to the Carolina Panthers. Simms however earned the respect of his teammates with his refusal to quit on the team, even while in considerable pain. He was having a problem breathing in the huddle and his toughness wasn’t lost on his teammates. "He's a tough guy. There's been people out there that have questioned his toughness," HC Jon Gruden said. "Those people hopefully were silenced yesterday."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Vince Young (TEN) will get his first NFL start Sunday. Kerry Collins moves to the #2 QB and Young gets his shot as the starter.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Vince Young (TEN) LB Keith Bullock said if given the choice, he’d rather see rookie QB Vince Young under center, citing his young energy as something the reeling Titans (0-3) are in desperate need of. “I don’t think (Kerry Collins will) be here next year, and I know Vince Young is the No. 3 pick,” Bullock said. HC Jeff Fisher declined to comment how much or how little Young will play this week versus the Dallas Cowboys.

*** Friday Update *** QB Mark Brunell (WAS) returned to the field Friday and was cleared to start in Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Mark Brunell (WAS) tested his injured elbow at the end of practice Thursday and plans to practice again on Friday. "He threw today. He's going to practice tomorrow," trainer Bubba Tyer said. He remains probable for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.

Running Back

*** Friday Update *** RB Edgerrin James (ARI) HC Dennis Green isn’t bothered when Edgerrin James says he wants the ball more. Green acknowledged that there may have been something to James’ comments. "We have a guy we brought in to rush for 1,500 yards and you can’t do that if you don’t have the football," Green said. "We want to get 25 carries a game (for James) and we haven’t got to 25 yet."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Nick Goings (CAR) practiced again on Thursday. Barring a setback, he is expected to play this weekend.

RB Cedric Benson (CHI) isn't winning any friends in Chicago. The Bears players joyfully paraded off the Metrodome field Sunday after their 19-16 comeback victory. The lone exception was RB Cedric Benson. He moped around so obviously that you wondered whether he could become a nuisance in the locker room. The contrast between Benson and his jubilant teammates was so noticeable that HC Lovie Smith, assistant Darryl Drake and team chaplain Harry Swayne separately attempted to raise Benson's spirits on the walk off the field. It suggested how fragile Benson's psyche is and that the Bears know it.

RB Chris Perry (CIN) is making progress, but his return date is still unclear. HC Marvin Lewis had encouraging news on him Tuesday. Perry is eligible to return to practice after the Tampa game. Lewis said it looks like Perry won't need to be shelved long before he gets activated.

*** Friday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) practiced on Friday and is expected to start this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) was limited in Thursday’s practice and remains questionable for this weekend. He still sounds like he's playing Sunday.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend. He expects to be ready though. "This Sunday, oh yeah, you can count me in," Droughns said.

RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) sounds optimistic about returning for the Browns to face the Raiders on Sunday. "Count me in," Droughns said. Droughns said he did not play against the Ravens because he did not have adequate strength in his shoulder. He seems eager to face the Raiders, the team that stopped him from scoring four times inside the 4-yard line last season.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Tatum Bell (DEN) Last Saturday night, as the Broncos were making their final preparations for Sunday night's game at New England, HC Mike Shanahan told RB Tatum Bell he no longer would rotate series with RB Mike Bell, as he did against the Rams and the Chiefs in the first two games. With stability as the goal, Shanahan decided he wanted one primary back and went with Tatum Bell. The way he performed against the Patriots, Tatum Bell again will be the primary back when Denver returns from its bye Oct. 9 against the Ravens.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ahman Green (GB) did not practice on Friday but still is expected to start this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ahman Green (GB) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB William Henderson (GB) has struggled in his blocking duties of late, and the team recently activated fullback Brandon Miree. Henderson could be in danger of being benched.

RB Ron Dayne (HOU) will start his second game this weekend. "I want to see him and RB Samkon Gado play," HC Gary Kubiak said. "We only had 18 carries Sunday. That's not many plays to evaluate two backs. "Hopefully, we can come out of a game with 30 or 35 carries where they're splitting time, and we can evaluate both of them."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) should see more action this week splitting carries more evenly with Ron Dayne. Said coach Gary Kubiak, “Yeah, I want to play them both (Dayne and Samkon Gado).

*** Friday Update *** RB Maurice Jones-Drew (JAX) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Derrick Wimbush (JAX) did not practice on Wednesday and is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ronnie Brown (MIA) has more than doubled his reception total (11) than he had this time last year (5). While it’s also a sign that the Miami offense continues to struggle in getting the ball downfield, Brown has been reaping the benefits as he is on pace to grab 60 balls for over 500 yards in the passing game.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Sammy Morris (MIA) will come off of his four-game suspension on Monday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) practiced without incident on Friday and he remains listed as probable for Sunday's game in Buffalo.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) was limited in Thursday’s practice and was added to the injury report as probable. He is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Corey Dillon (NE) was present for the duration of practice Wednesday and looks to be healthy for the game vs. Cincinnati.

RB Corey Dillon (NE) walked through the locker room looking fine, 18 hours after leaving Sunday’s game, with what the team termed an arm injury. However a source indicated that Dillon suffered a neck stinger and is considered day to day. When he was approached by reporters, Dillon declined comment.

*** Friday Update *** RB Kevan Barlow (NYJ) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kevan Barlow (NYJ) is probable with a calf and practiced Thursday and is expected to start.

*** Friday Update *** RB Leon Washington (NYJ) is expected to have a special package of plays designed for him Week 4. However, Kevan Barlow is expected to remain the team’s starting RB.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Leon Washington (NYJ) may see more action soon. HC Eric Mangini is believed to be considering an expanded role in his team's offense for the rookie. Washington rushed seven times for 25 yards in Week 3 and also had two receptions for 52 yards. "The more he takes advantage of his opportunities, the more they'll come to him," Mangini said.

*** Friday Update *** RB Reno Mahe (PHI) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) practiced Saturday and is looking like he'll play Monday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) did not practice on Friday but still expects to play this weekend. He has shown over the past couple of weeks that he is able to play at a high level without practicing fully the week before.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) is listed as questionable for this week but that's not too alarming. It's not known whether he'll practice Thursday. Last week, he did not practice until Friday and obviously did fine in the game.

RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) has missed the majority of the last two week's practices because of knee inflammation, but he has played the last two games and may be back to a full-time work schedule. "Hopefully, we're getting to the end of it, and where he's feeling a little better," HC Reid said. "He wants to practice, and we want him to practice. But, at the same time, we want to be smart with it."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) Alexander will miss this week's game.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) still has a cracked bone in his foot and will likely miss this week's game. "Doctors cannot explain how he feels better or how the level of swelling decreased so quickly," his brother, Durran Alexander said. "But there still is a crack there. So he'll be sitting out."

Shaun Alexander said earlier Wednesday that he hoped to play Sunday vs. Chicago. Alexander is crediting the power of prayer for possibly healing the cracked bone in his left foot. The foot stopped hurting Tuesday and word spread as Alexander began alerting friends and family. HC Mike Holmgren verified the report in his press conference and said Alexander has a chance to play Sunday pending the results of additional medical examinations Wednesday. Alexander came to work Wednesday without his walking boot and was apparently jumping around to prove his good health.

RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) has a fracture in his left foot. He is expected to be out at least two weeks. RB Maurice Morris will replace Alexander. "The actual time of his rehab, we can't even determine at this point," HC Mike Holmgren said. "I don't think it will be real lengthy, but it is what it is. Now, he just has to stay off of it and let it heal up."

RB Maurice Morris (SEA) will start for the team this weekend in place of the injured Shaun Alexander. The All-Pro Alexander will miss at least two weeks. "The actual time of his rehab, we can't even determine at this point," HC Mike Holmgren said. "I don't think it will be real lengthy, but it is what it is. Now, he just has to stay off of it and let it heal up."

*** Friday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) practiced again on Thursday. Barring a setback, he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Frank Gore (SF) practiced on Wednesday but remains listed as questionable for this weekend. Coach Mike Nolan was asked today if he expected Gore to be able to play this Sunday and Nolan simply said, "Yes."

RB Frank Gore (SF) was initially diagnosed with a strained abdomen after suffering an injury in week three but had his diagnosis changed to bruised ribs by the team on Monday. Gore sounded as though he expects to play in week four. "I'll be on the field," Gore said. "I'm kind of sore, but I'll be all right."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Chris Brown (TEN) practiced again on Thursday. Barring a setback, he is expected to play this weekend. “I feel like I am ready to go, I feel like it’s my spot to lose, I expect to start,” Brown said.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chris Brown (TEN) practiced on Wednesday but remains questionable for this weekend.

RB T.J. Duckett (WAS) was inactive for Sunday's game with Clinton Portis healthy. That may be the case again this week.

RB Clinton Portis (WAS) came through Sunday's game with flying colors and said he was fine afterwards. Look for more of the same.

Wide Receiver

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) most likely will return to the starting lineup, HC Jim Mora said on Tuesday. WR Ashley Lelie got the start in place of White because White had missed three practices last week with bruised ribs and shoulder.

*** Friday Update *** WR Demetrius Williams (BAL) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Demetrius Williams (BAL) practiced on Thursday. Barring a setback, he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Demetrius Williams (BAL) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) told WHNS FOX in Charlotte that he wasn't at top speed when he made his season debut last Sunday at Tampa Bay. That's scary as Smith had seven catches for 112 yards and says he took it slow in the game.

He says he's getting stronger and is practicing now without any discomfort in his legs.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) practiced again on Thursday. Barring a setback, he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) practiced Wednesday and is listed as probable for this Sunday's game vs. the Saints.

WR Steve Smith (CAR) logged 52 snaps (77.6 percent of the team's 67) Sunday, which was more than the coaching staff had anticipated. The team "monitored" Smith's playing time, but leaned on him to keep them posted on how much he was able to take. He had seven catches for 112 yards and a 16.0-yard per catch average. "I was happy to see him get through it," Fox said. "I think we probably played him too much. But for a first game, he did an outstanding job." Fox said he wasn't sure when Smith could play full games and run full routes, saying since he missed so much of the prep work; it's still going to be a "process" to get him caught up.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Mark Bradley (CHI) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Antonio Chatman (CIN) practiced for the second straight day on Friday but still remains questionable with a groin injury. He will likely be a game-time decision.

*** Friday Update *** WR Chris Henry (CIN) According to Bengals.com, HC Marvin Lewis is still mum on the status of Chris Henry for Sunday, but it might be a little bit more interesting now that Antonio Chatman looks like he’s healthy enough to play. Chatman is looking to make his Bengals debut after being hobbled with a groin problem since the first day of training camp. Chatman practiced for the third straight day Friday and is still listed as questionable on Friday's injury report. Henry is getting heat for being a passenger when Odell Thurman was arrested for DUI hours after the Bengals victory in Pittsburgh last Sunday and there is speculation that Lewis could deactivate him.

WR Chris Henry (CIN) The last two weeks of football have been good to Bengals WR Chris Henry and his public image. Monday's news was not. Henry was one of two passengers riding in a Chevy Tahoe driven by LB Odell Thurman when Thurman was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence. Henry was not charged with any infractions but the incident is another in a string of troubles Henry has been involved with and it could have repercussions elsewhere. Henry is on two years probation in Florida. In another case, Kenton District Judge Doug Grothaus ordered Henry to stay away from alcohol and minors.

*** Thursday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) practiced on Thursday. His heel isn't totally healed but he's listed as probable and is expected to start this week.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Terry Glenn (DAL) is back at practice and catching passes. "I am fine. I practiced today. I am good to go," Glenn said. Considering WR Terrell Owens' uncertain status, Glenn's presence against Tennessee is crucial. He leads the club with 10 catches for 175 yards and a touchdown, and the Cowboys will lean on him even more if Owens isn't ready.

WR Terry Glenn (DAL) suffered a cut on his hand on Monday. The injury is not considered to be serious.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) There isn't anything official yet but the buzz we're hearing is that Owens will start Sunday. We'll have the official word for you before kickoff Sunday. Check the Sunday Updates online.

*** Friday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) participated in practice again on Friday morning and remains questionable for Sunday's game as the Dallas Cowboys visit the Tennessee Titans. Owens did make the trip to Nashville. HC Bill Parcells addressed the media on Friday and said he would probably make a "game-time decision" on Owens. As for Owens, he's ready: "If he gives me the nod that I can play, then you best believe I will be ready, no matter what," Owens said. "They can slap the hand; they can do whatever they want to the hand. I will be ready." He says the swelling in his hand has "gone down a lot".

*** Thursday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) was able to practice on Thursday. This was his first extensive work since breaking his right hand on Sept. 17. HC Bill Parcells wants to evaluate all the medical information he can, including details about Owens' broken hand and possibly a mental evaluation before he makes a decision on Owens' availability for this Sunday's game against the Titans.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) today denied reports he tried to kill himself with an overdose of painkillers. Owens said "there was no suicide attempt," explaining that he mixed painkillers with supplements and became groggy. He said this afternoon that the confusion over his condition likely stemmed from an empty bottle of pain medication found by his publicist, who was with him at the time. He said the rest of the pills were in a drawer.

In football news, Owens played catch with Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo on Wednesday. He says he “should” practice on Thursday and is working toward playing this weekend.

WR Terrell Owens (DAL) worked out lightly but did not participate in team drills.

"The swelling is down pretty good," coach Bill Parcells said, referring to Owens' hand. "He caught some balls. He ran a lot today. I think tomorrow he might do something." "I'm just anxious to get out there on the field in New York and play the Jets."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Reggie Wayne (IND) practiced Thursday and is expected to play Sunday against the Jets. He has been in New Orleans with his family since Sunday evening when he learned his brother, Rashad, had been killed in a traffic accident. "He's doing probably as well as could be expected," coach Tony Dungy said. "But it's good to see him running routes and things."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Reggie Wayne (IND) looks like he may be able to play this week. "The last conversation I had with him, he said he'd be back in Indianapolis sometime tomorrow (Thursday)," coach Tony Dungy said Sept. 27. "Right now, I think he will play."

WR Reggie Wayne (IND) The team's focus has been rallying around WR Reggie Wayne, whose older brother was killed in a traffic accident Sunday morning. The team made arrangements for Reggie and his mother to return to their home in New Orleans. Funeral arrangements haven't been announced and it's uncertain when Wayne will return to the team. "Reggie will be back when he's able to," HC Tony Dungy said, adding that as many members of the organization as possible will attend Rashad Wayne's funeral service.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Matt Jones (JAX) is listed as probable with a groin issue. Coach Jack Del Rio expects him to be healthy this week against the Redskins. "He was questionable going in," Del Rio said. "We just didn't feel good about him opening up and playing a lot. He's one of our weapons. We didn't want to lose him for an extended amount of time. We elected not to play him much at all."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Devery Henderson (NO) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for this weekend.

WR Plaxico Burress (NYG) was limited by his back in Seattle according to wide receivers coach Mike Sullivan. "It was a major factor," Sullivan said. "Plaxico injured himself late in the Philadelphia game and was unable to practice. He worked hard in the meeting rooms to try to prepare himself mentally. He went to treatment, rehab, with the hopes that he could go out there and perform. And as the game went on it became clear that the speed and the explosiveness, the things that he has brought to the table in the first two weeks, he didn't have. And he wasn't able to perform at the level which we had been accustomed. So unfortunately we had to go with a different player at the position (David Tyree, who caught a team-high five passes)."

*** Friday Update *** WR Laveranues Coles (NYJ) It appears that Jets’ local newspapers are treating WR Laveranues Coles' calf injury as a non-story. He's officially listed as "questionable" for this week but seems highly likely to play. He seems to be about in the same place as he was last week when he went out and played well.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Laveranues Coles (NYJ) was limited in Thursday’s practice and remains questionable for this weekend. But that's where he was last week at this time and he looks to be about in the same shape. And he went on to catch 10 passes for 78 yards last Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) practiced Friday and did not appear to be limited by the hamstring. Staff writer Marc Narducci from the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote today that it would be "surprising" if Stallworth didn't play Monday.

The team lists Stallworth as questionable for their game Monday night against the Packers, but Stallworth doesn't consider himself questionable. He thinks he'll play.

But that is exactly what the team was saying last week at this time and Stallworth wound up sitting out last Sunday. He was very disappointed that he didn't play last Sunday. “It was definitely hard, especially because I bought 70 tickets,” Stallworth said. “I'd never played a meaningful game in Oakland or San Francisco.” Stallworth sat out the 49er game with a hamstring strain. It was the first game he'd missed since 2003.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) did not practice on Thursday. He is still listed as questionable for this weekend. Coach Andy Reid termed the injury a "slight strain" in his hamstring. "[The injury is] one that is just enough to bug you. You don't want it to get any worse," Reid said. "We're being cautious with it."

Stallworth did some running on the side Thursday but did not practice with the team. "I'm definitely feeling better than the last time I tried to go out and run [pre-game at SF]," Stallworth said. "I've been working at it real hard so hopefully it'll pay off. I don't foresee anything past this week. I've been getting better every day.

"The key is just to make sure that I'm getting better every day and I've been progressing and doing that. I'm being aggressive with it, but smart at the same time. I'm really trying to push it as far as it'll let me go. [Head athletic trainer] Rick [Burkholder] had to tell me today to calm down a little bit because I want to do so much and he told me to relax because I had already done so much and I wanted to do more.

"Hopefully I can continue to get better and be out there with my team on Monday."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) is reportedly getting better as he recovers from the hamstring issue but it listed as questionable on the injury report. Once bitten, twice shy is the word here and we're going to be very leery this week. Let's see if he's able to practice.

*** Friday Update *** TE Desmond Clark (CHI) did not practice on Friday and will be a game-time decision for this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Desmond Clark (CHI) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend.

TE Desmond Clark (CHI) Normally, HC Lovie Smith is able to give some sort of medical assessment of injuries on the day following games. The fact he was vague Monday on the condition of Clark was not a good sign. Neither was the plastic boot on Clark's injured left ankle. "We don't know how serious it is," Lovie Smith said. "If it is serious, like a high ankle sprain, typically that means at least four weeks of rest". The Bears' offense will be searching for alternatives. Clark is tied with WR Bernard Berrian with 12 catches after three games after catching 24 total in each of the last two seasons.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) appeared remorseful when he said Monday that his emotional side got the best of him when he criticized HC Tom Coughlin and his staff after the game for being outcoached in the blowout loss at Seattle. Coughlin conceded he was surprised and extremely disappointed by something that should not be done by anyone, especially when his door is always open to any player. "It's the competitive nature of me," Shockey added. "I don't like to lose. I don't like to lose at anything. The way we played as a team, it's not this team and it's not this organization."

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Eric Johnson (SF) will see plenty of action while Vernon Davis is out, and it looks like he is clicking with his QB. Alex Smith is starting to find that Johnson can make for a nice security blanket. In Sunday's 38-24 loss to Philadelphia, Smith got his first extended playing opportunity with the veteran tight end, and he took advantage. He connected with Johnson seven times for 87 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown at the end of the game. "He's a great technician of inside routes," Smith said. "With his body language, he's easy to read."

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Erron Kinney (TEN) will not play this weekend.

It's harder for the snapper and the holder, because he throws the ball back with a lot of dirt on it and sometimes when Donnie goes to spin the ball, because [the ground is] so hard, it continues to rotate. I think [holder] Donnie Jones’ job is hard on the dirt, to get that ball to stop."

The source said Emmons is expected to miss three to four weeks. Emmons, 33, suffered a small tear in his right pectoral last year and missed the next three games, but returned for the next four. He aggravated the injury and was placed on injured reserve in December. Rookie Gerris Wilkinson and veteran Brandon Short are the leading candidates to start in Emmons’ place.
