Week 3 Players in the News

The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) will make his 224th consecutive start this weekend. By way of comparison, the Chicago Bears have started 20 different QBs in that time span (the most in the league).

*** Saturday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) has just one TDs, three INTs and has been sacked 10 times. The knee injury Culpepper suffered last season is still affecting his mobility, yet at the same time, Culpepper expects more than what the Dolphins are delivering. “Obviously, coming off a serious injury like that, I can't be as mobile,” Culpepper said. “But everything else is fine. I've got to make the right decisions. I still have the same arm and I feel very confident in making plays. I know I can and I will.”

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) will reportedly try to play through the injury despite being listed on the Cleveland Brown's injury report as questionable with a shoulder injury,

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ahman Green (GB) missed practice Friday with a hamstring injury and was added to the team's injury report as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions at Ford Field. "Just the wear of the last two days, it flared up on him at the end of practice (Thursday)," HC Mike McCarthy said. Asked if he was concerned about Sunday, McCarthy replied, "I hope not. We're just being smart about it. We'll know more in the morning." If Green can't go, backup Noah Herron and recently acquired Vernand Morency would share the load, just as they did in practice Friday. Herron said he got most of the work on third-down situations in practice Friday and expects to fill that role against the Lions, while Morency did the early-down work and might even start against the Lions if Green can't go. "Every day, I prepare as if I'm a starting back so it won't be a big surprise for me on game day. That's just the nature of the beast," Morency said. "I think I'm fine (with knowing the offense). I'm just going in every day hitting the playbook. I feel very confident and very fast."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ciatrick Fason (MIN) is expected to be inactive for the team's Week 3 game. RB Artose Pinner would be the team's No. 3 running back for the game.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) sounds likes he's good to go. "It doesn't worry me at all," Westbrook said.

Apparently, coach Reid feels the same way. "The swelling is down now, so he feels comfortable and he is doing double time on the mental reps so he makes sure he knows everything we have in," Reid said.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) will start in the team's matchup with the New York Giants on Sunday. Alexander has been bothered by a sore left foot since the season started and missed most of this week's practices before taking part in team drills on Friday. "He tells me it feels much better," said HC Mike Holmgren. "If it feels much better, then we absolutely did the right thing."

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) returned to practice Friday after missing most of the week with bruised ribs and a bruised shoulder suffered in last Sunday's 14-3 victory over the Buccaneers. White's return could mean more than just having their starting wide receiver back in the lineup. Falcons' coaches feel that in White, Michael Jenkins and Ashley Lelie, they have three deep-threat options that can — and will — be sent off to the end zone separately and together.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) will be a game day decision. Fortunately, Carolina plays in the early game Sunday so we'll have his game status for you well before kickoff. Check our Sunday Update online for the official word.

*** Saturday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) will play Sunday but it's looking like he'll work as the 3rd WR as he eases back into the system.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Rod Smith (DEN) has had three concussions in the past year, the latest one knocking him from the Denver Broncos' game that they won in overtime against Kansas City on Sunday. When asked this week how his recovery was going, Smith said he’s fine but was upset about the questions in regards to the concussions. HC Mike Shanahan had this to say about his starting receiver. “Rod is fine. He's practiced the whole week.”

*** Saturday Update *** WR Mike Williams (DET) continues to get fined by the team for being overweight. The team reduced their target for him from 230 pounds to 220 pounds. He has been hovering around 230 pounds and weighed 233 pounds at his last weigh-in. He is working with a nutritionist to get his diet back on track.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) has been downgraded to out on the team's injury report and will miss Sunday's contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Chris Chambers (MIA) states that he is almost fully healed from the thumb injury he suffered in training camp. "It's the worst injury because you sometimes have to catch balls with your body when you don't want to," said Chambers, who is not listed on the team's injury report. "Actually, it helps out because you begin developing your other hand. Once you're healed up, catching balls is nothing."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Plaxico Burress (NYG) didn't practice Friday because of tightness in his back, but he believes that he and the rest of the Giants' banged up receivers will be fine Sunday in Seattle. "I'm OK, I'm good," Burress said yesterday, "It just tightened up on me, but I'll be out there. We'll all be out there." Against the Eagles a week ago, Burress, Jeremy Shockey, Amani Toomer and Tim Carter all wound up being slowed by injuries, but according to Burress, they will all be able to play on Sunday against the Seahawks.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Laveranues Coles (NYJ) is listed as questionable with a calf injury and didn't practice fully Friday. But the wideout seems all but certain he'll play this Sunday against the Bills. "I'm OK. I hope I'll be able to [play]. The only thing that'll change that is if coach says something. Other than that, I'll be there. I'm traveling. I got my bags packed. It looks pretty good from me."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) left practice early Friday, complaining of a tight hamstring. HC Andy Reid had this to say in regards to the injury. “Donte Stallworth had a spasm in his hamstring, something he had during the game (against the Giants),” Reid said. “He was grabbing it a little bit so I got him out of there before something serious were to happen. He should be fine for the game.”

*** Saturday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) is ready to make his debut with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday against the New York Giants, but is not expected to start. "You overload him and all of a sudden he gets messed up, and you don't want that to happen," said head coach Mike Holmgren. "He is a bright guy, and he's worked hard to learn the (offense). He will be part of it, but he doesn't have to do it by himself."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Brandon Williams (SF) is expected to make his professional debut Sunday after being inactive for the first two games. With WR Taylor Jacobs doubtful with a hamstring injury, an opening is there for Williams, who is expected to return punts. "I'm very excited, first game, rookie year," Williams said. "It will be one to remember. It was a little disappointing, but you've just got to keep working. In this league, you earn your spot. Nothing is just going to be given to you."

Tight End

*** Saturday Update *** TE Todd Heap (BAL) was added to the injury report as questionable after spraining his ankle Saturday. He'll be a game time decision Sunday.

*** Saturday Update *** TE Ben Hartsock (IND) has been placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season. The move made room for PK Martin Gramatica on the 53-man roster. Hartsock was unable to shake a hamstring injury that put him on the inactive list the first two weeks of the season.

*** Saturday Update *** TE Itula Mili (SEA) is expected to play Sunday against the New York Giants. Mili injured his knee last week in a win over the Arizona Cardinals, and the initial prognosis was not very good. "He went from having one foot in the grave and having one foot on a banana peel to being able to play," said HC Mike Holmgren.

Kicker

*** Saturday Update *** PK Adam Vinatieri (IND) has been downgraded to out and will miss a game for the first time in his 11-year career. Martin Gramatica will handle all the kicking this week.

Offensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** OL Detroit Lions (DET) T Jonathan Scott is expected to start at RT and face DE Aaron Kampman, who is tied for the NFL lead in sacks with four. Veterans Rex Tucker (knee) and Barry Stokes (hamstring) were unable to practice this week. "You've got to start somewhere," Scott said. "I'm ready for the challenge."

LG Ross Verba will make his first regular-season appearance for Detroit on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Verba had a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the Lions' first two games.

*** Saturday Update *** OL Miami Dolphins (MIA) Kendyl Jacox will be the starting right guard for the Miami Dolphins this week in the game against the Tennessee Titans. He is the 4th lineman to line up at the right guard position this season. Seth McKinney, Joe Toledo and now Bennie Anderson are out for the season. "Under the circumstances," HC Nick Saban said about Jacox’s performance last week, "he did a really good job. Backups don't get the reps that the starters do. Being a veteran helped him make the transition."

Defensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** DL Patrick Kerney (ATL) is still limited because of strained right triceps sustained at Carolina, so undrafted rookie DE Paul Carrington could make his first start Sunday. Carrington, who played his college ball at Central Florida, took 38 snaps in last Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay and fared fairly well according to HC Jim Mora. "He's done fine, but he's got a long ways to go," Mora said.

*** Saturday Update *** DL Orpheus Roye (CLE) has stated that it is unlikely he will play in this week's game against the Baltimore Ravens. Roye injured his rotator cuff during last week's loss to Cincinnati. "I think I'm down," said Roye. "It's killing me not to play, but I don't want to hurt the team."

*** Saturday Update *** DL Anthony Hargrove (STL) is expected to be fined up to $40,000 for missing two days of practice. Hargrove has missed practice the past two days while he dealt with personal issues at home. HC Scott Linehan met with Hargrove Friday but postponed any full-blown discussions of those issues until Monday.

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Takeo Spikes (BUF) will be a game time decision Sunday. He's still listed as questionable.

*** Saturday Update *** LB Willie McGinest (CLE) is hoping that he can overcome a calf injury and help the Browns when they face the Baltimore Ravens Sunday. "I feel all right," he said. "I'm doing everything I can to get out there......but you've got to be smart about these things. I don't want to miss a lot of games." McGinest is listed as questionable.

In related news, McGinest lashed out at critics who believe he really does not want to play in Cleveland. "If I didn't want to be here, I wouldn't be here," McGinest said. "I wouldn't have signed here. Second of all, I'm not a quitter - I don't care what our record is. Anybody who knows me knows that I hate not playing, and regardless of the situation, I want to be out there. If we're getting beat by 50 points, I'm going to be out there on the last play."

Defensive Back

*** Saturday Update *** DB Matt Ware (ARI) will make his first start Sunday against the St. Louis Rams at Cardinals Stadium. Ware was thrust into a starter's role because of a groin injury sustained by CB Eric Green last weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Bob Sanders (IND) will miss Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a knee injury. Rookie Antoine Bethea is expected to start in his place.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Dexter Wynn (PHI) should be more active this weekend. With starting CB Lito Sheppard out because of a knee injury and Rod Hood likely to be sidelined because of a strained heel, Wynn can expect to see action at DB along with getting some P/K return duties.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Troy Polamalu (PIT) said his right shoulder feels great, and the All-Pro safety has been upgraded from questionable to probable for Sunday's game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Brian Kelly (TB) has been downgraded to out and will miss Sunday's game.

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) The Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins are having a dispute over the use of the Metrodome. The Vikings are scheduled to host the Detroit Lions Oct. 8, but the Twins could be hosting Game 5 of the AL Division Series that day if they win the AL Central. The Twins' lease agreement with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission gives them postseason scheduling priority with the stadium. However, that agreement expired in 2004. The Vikings could decide to switch home games with the Lions and play in Detroit Dec. 10, but the Vikings don't want to switch because it would mean four of their final five games are on the road. Another option is to move the game to Monday, Oct. 9, but the Vikings are not happy with that idea either. The NFL is saying they are exploring all of their options.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Philadelphia Eagles (PHI) HC Andy Reid is not sure if RB Reno Mahe will handle punt returns this week, "There's a chance. We'll just see how Reno feels as we get closer to the game."

*** Saturday Update *** TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) Rookie WR Santonio Holmes practiced Friday and is expected to play, which means rookie WR/PR Willie Reid will probably be inactive once again.

All the news

Quarterback

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jake Plummer (DEN) is all too aware of the gossip surrounding his rough start to the 2006 campaign; he also knows it goes with the territory of being a starting QB for a perennial playoff contender. Plummer is 33-12 as a Broncos starter but says the only thing he can do is "play better". As for NFL analysts, like Jimmy Johnson on FOX, who believe rookie backup QB Jay Cutler should start, Plummer says, ""What I would say to him is: 'Your hair looks good.'"

QB Jake Plummer (DEN) is still the team’s starting QB. HC Mike Shanahan said on Monday that the team will continue to use quarterback Plummer as the starter, despite his early season struggles. "Jake has won a lot of games," Shanahan said. "And just because we started out a little bit slow like we did last year, it doesn't mean it's the end of the world."

*** Saturday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) will make his 224th consecutive start this weekend. By way of comparison, the Chicago Bears have started 20 different QBs in that time span (the most in the league).

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) is downplaying the idea of a midseason trade to a playoff-caliber team. After losing two home games to start the season, Brett Favre can understand why people might think he would welcome a trade to a contender. But Favre, who turns 37 next month, doesn't necessarily think that would be any better than sticking it out for the rest of the year -- and perhaps beyond -- in Green Bay. "You know, it all, it sounds great," Favre said Wednesday. "But to learn a new system -- to basically start over -- the expectations would be so great. And people may say, 'Well, say your season's not going the way you would like it here, at least you could go somewhere else and take a chance at winning.' Well, I'm taking that chance now." Favre figures a sudden trade to a contender would subject him to unrealistic pressure. "I know how difficult that is," Favre said. "And the expectations: 'OK, we've got Brett. We're going to the Super Bowl.' Well, it's a lot harder than that. And in that situation, (if) you don't get to the Super Bowl, you don't play up to expectations, then it was a loss."

"Well, first of all, I don't ever foresee that happening," Favre added. "And would I go? I don't think so. I really don't." Favre said his 14-plus years in Green Bay have been "everything and then some," and he wants to keep trying to make a winner out of this year's team. "There's still some juice left in me here," Favre said. "And just because we're struggling right now, I'm not going to bail just like that. Whether or not this team gets back to playoff or Super Bowl contention any time soon, from my end, I've got to do what I can now. And maybe that carries over leadership-wise in the future."

*** Friday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) is feeling “a little bit better,” according to HC Herman Edwards. Green has been out since Sept. 10, when he suffered a severe concussion after a hit by Cincinnati’s Robert Geathers. Edwards said the Chiefs are preparing to play without him Oct. 1 against San Francisco at Arrowhead Stadium.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) has no timetable for returning to action. It has been 10 days since 'the hit', and Green still can’t drive a car, toss a football, or do much of anything but rest. Green underwent neurological tests for his concussion on Tuesday, and Chiefs officials say no timetable was given for his return. “We’re confident he’s coming back,” HC Herm Edwards said. “When he’s coming back … nobody knows. I haven’t even asked. Because I don’t want to know." The Chiefs went back to work Tuesday operating under the assumption that Green won’t be under center anytime soon. Damon Huard took half of the reps in practice, then rookie Brodie Croyle ran with a collection of first- and second-team players. Huard made his first start in six years Sunday, and considering the venue and the circumstances, Edwards said Huard did all right. One of the reasons Croyle is getting more reps is because it’s the bye week and Edwards wants to see whether the younger players have learned from their playbooks.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) isn't entertaining the notion that his health is affecting play, but that hasn't stopped some of his opponents from expressing their opinion. "No, obviously not," Bills LB London Fletcher said when asked if Culpepper had returned to his old form. "He is not healthy, as far as having the same mobility he had in Minnesota. He can't keep plays alive the way he did."

*** Friday Update *** QB Tarvaris Jackson (MIN) suffered cartilage damage in his right knee during practice Thursday and likely will have surgery Monday, HC Brad Childress said. Childress predicted a recovery timetable of around a month. Childress said he was not sure how the team would handle its No. 3 QB position Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced fully on Wednesday and will start as normal this weekend against the Broncos.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) is probable for week three, but it’s due to a calf injury and completely unrelated to the shoulder problems that have plagued him over the last two years. He practiced fully on Wednesday and will start as normal this weekend against the Bills.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) had flu-like symptoms during the Monday Night game that were unrelated to his appendectomy. However, coach Bill Cowher said reports that his quarterback had a 104-degree fever were not correct. Roethlisberger's temperature was 100.4.

QB Billy Volek (SD) is out of Tennessee. The Chargers have agreed to trade a sixth round pick for Volek. If he meets certain playing requirements, that could turn into a 5th round pick. Regardless of the price, San Diego needed a veteran backup for Philip Rivers, and Volek fits the bill.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) practiced Wednesday despite sore ribs and he is expected to start in week three.

QB Chris Simms (TB) has the support of head coach Jon Gruden and the Tampa Bay staff. "I worry about everyone's confidence when things don't go good," Gruden said Monday. "We've got to do a great job of rallying around (Simms) as a staff. I know our football team will do that. He's got to take responsibility to get better and I know he will.

"I have a lot of respect for him and his resolve. I expect him to come back raring and ready to go this week."

QB Kerry Collins (TEN) will remain the Titans starting QB although Vince Young is clearly the future. ''We made a decision to go in a direction back in April with the selection of Vince as far as Vince becoming the future of this franchise,'' coach Jeff Fisher said. ''With that being said it's going to be a matter of time. I can't tell you how soon it is going to happen, but he's going to be our guy.''

''In the meantime we've got a very experienced quarterback who I think is only going to get better as he becomes more familiar with our system,'' Fisher said. ''[Collins] will carry the load for us right now as we continue to develop Vince.''

QB Mark Brunell (WAS) is the starter and that’s not about to change according to coach Joe Gibbs. There was no consideration to taking him out during Sunday’s 27-10 debacle at Dallas. “As long as Mark is healthy, we wouldn’t do that,” Gibbs said.

Running Back

*** Thursday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (BAL) and the Ravens offense will have an excellent opportunity to prove they have returned to form when they visit Cleveland this weekend. Lewis said he is healthy (even though he is listed as questionable with an injured hip) and ready for more carries. Mike Anderson and Musa Smith have also contributed to the ground game while Lewis eases into a heavier workload. Despite Baltimore's early success running the ball, the team expressed a need for improved play on offense, specifically in the red zone. HC Brian Billick hopes the red zone improvement comes in the form of a throwback running performance against the Browns.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (BAL) did not practice on Wednesday and is listed as questionable for this weekend. However, the Ravens rarely utilize the “Probable” section of the injury report on Wednesday, so don’t worry too much about this. Lewis is expected to start as normal against the Browns.

*** Friday Update *** RB Musa Smith (BAL) did not finish practice Thursday, and there is a good chance he won't play against Cleveland this Sunday because of a knee injury. Rookie RB P.J. Daniels could be active and work on 3rd downs. If not, Jamal Lewis will likely play on all downs this Sunday. Mike Anderson's role may also increase.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Musa Smith (BAL) was unable to finish Thursday’s practice due to his injured knee. He remains questionable for this weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) will reportedly try to play through the injury despite being listed on the Cleveland Brown's injury report as questionable with a shoulder injury,

*** Friday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) partially participated in Friday’s session. He looks like he will play but be limited with the injured shoulder. The Browns will probably use a combination, with Jerome Harrison the likely starter, Jason Wright and Lawrence Vickers also seeing time if Droughns can't play. The Browns have liked Vickers since they first saw him, and part of the reason they let William Green and Lee Suggs go was they felt Vickers could be a viable option running the ball if something happened to Droughns.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) remained sidelined Thursday with a shoulder injury and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report. HC Romeo Crennel declined to discuss the results of a MRI performed on Droughns Monday. If he can't go, Jerome Harrison and Jason Wright would likely see time.

*** Friday Update *** RB Jerome Harrison (CLE) would reportedly be the favorite to start in Week 3 against the Ravens if Reuben Droughns can't play. The Browns probably will use a combination of RBs, with Jason Wright and Lawrence Vickers also seeing time.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) ran hard Sunday night. He ran well, too, picking up 94 yards on 20 carries for a robust 4.7 average. But he also ran too much. Or so says HC Bill Parcells. "I don't want to do that (give Jones 20 carries)," Parcells said. "I want to use Marion Barber and I want to get Tyson Thompson in there a little bit. The more I can do that, the better off we're going to be." Parcells doesn't believe Jones can stand up to the pounding of carrying the ball 20-25 times per tilt for 16 games.

*** Friday Update *** RB Mike Bell (DEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Cedric Cobbs (DEN) will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Kevin Jones (DET) is unhappy with himself and his recent bout with fumblitis. The third-year back has coughed up the ball three times in two games this season. He had only fumbled four times in his first 475 carries the previous two years. He is also concerned with his 3.0 yards per carry and that he hasn't run for over 100 yards since week 15 of the 2004 season. Jones also has yet to reach the end zone this season.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ahman Green (GB) was injured in practice this week, and the team may be without their best running back on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. HC Mike McCarthy today revealed that Green injured his hamstring in practice this week and was held out of Friday's session. Green was unavailable for comment, and was not listed on Thursday's injury report. Noah Herron and Vernand Morency will share in running the ball if Green is unable to play.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) is expected to see an increased role with the team in Week 3. "I think you'll see some more of him this week," HC Mike McCarthy said. "He's picked it up very fast. I thought he did well today in practice with his opportunities. I'm very happy with him; I think he's been a good addition. We'll look to use him and get some productivity out of him this week."

*** Friday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) has moved into the starting lineup according to HC Gary Kubiak. "We will start Ron Dayne at RB,” said Kubiak. “They’re all going to continue to play as they progress. Samkon’s (Gado) playing got a little bigger this week, but they’re all going to play.”

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) will see a bigger role according to coach Gary Kubiak. When asked about his starting running back for Sunday, Kubiak said, “I’ll start Wali (Lundy) or Ronnie (Dayne), but chances are it’s going to be Ronnie with the direction we’re going. They’re going to all play, but what you’re going to see is Ronnie and Samkon’s role get bigger and bigger as the weeks go on and on.”

When asked about Dayne, Kubiak said, “He’s a big physical player who’s always fallen forward. You watch the Indy game, I thought Ronnie was still a little rusty from the Ronnie I know, but you got to remember that he really didn’t have a preseason. I thought he got better as the game went on. I just think he kind of fits the mold. Right now we need somebody to pound the ball for three to four yards and we need to get some third down and threes because on third down and long, we’re not very productive right now. I think he’ll keep our offense on schedule.”

*** Thursday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) will see a bigger role according to coach Gary Kubiak.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Wali Lundy (HOU) may see his carries decrease as coach Gary Kubiak said he's looking to increase the roles for Ron Dayne and Samkon Gado.

RB Joseph Addai (IND) will continue to share time with Dominic Rhodes. HC Tony Dungy said the plan is to continue to rotate the two backs as the Colts did in the first two games. "Those guys are doing fine," Dungy said. "As I've said before, one guy may be hot one game. It may be a different type of game. Joseph had the better stats yesterday, but Dom played really well." RB Joseph Addai ran 16 times for 82 yards against Houston while starter RB Dominic Rhodes gained 37 yards on 14 carries. For the season, Addai has rushed 23 times for 108 yards, a 4.7-yard average, and no touchdowns. Rhodes' totals are 30 rushes for 66 yards, a 2.2-yard average and two touchdowns. Both have caught five passes.

RB Dominic Rhodes (IND) will continue to share time with rookie Joseph Addai.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Ciatrick Fason (MIN) is expected to be inactive for the team's Week 3 game. RB Artose Pinner would be the team's No. 3 running back for the game.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Tiki Barber (NYG) has what he called "a deep bruise" on his left forearm, near the spot where he broke the arm back in 2000. But precautionary X-rays came back negative, and he said yesterday that the injury "is nothing." "I actually got it last week against the Colts," Barber said. "It went away and I thought it would be fine, but I got hit again in the same spot. I always use this arm to fend people off and they just wanted to make sure that my previous fracture wasn't disrupted. "But it's fine."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Derrick Ward (NYG) will not play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Kevan Barlow (NYJ) worked with the 1st team on Thursday while Derrick Blaylock was excused from practice to be with his wife for the birth of the couple's fourth child. It appears that Barlow will get the bulk of the carries Sunday against the Bills. Blaylock will likely be used mainly in 3rd down situations, as he was last Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Derrick Blaylock (NYJ) was excused from Thursday’s practice in order to accompany his wife who was readying for the birth of their fourth child. He is still expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB LaMont Jordan (OAK) may soon get more receptions as HC Art Shell intends to incorporate his running backs in the passing game. "That's one of the things I wrote down," Shell said. "We need to get the ball to our backs out of the backfield. We need to do that. We need to put more pressure on the defense by doing that."

*** Friday Update *** RB Reno Mahe (PHI) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) was back on the practice field again on Friday and is expected to play in Sunday's game against San Francisco. "He felt pretty good coming off the field today," HC Andy Reid said. "We've been a bit cautious with him just to make sure that we get that swelling out of there. It's down now, so he feels comfortable."

Said Westbrook Friday after practice: "I feel very confident I will be able to go out there and contribute and help this team win a football game," he said. "That is what I've been doing all week, trying to get healthy to where I don't have to worry about the swelling any longer."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) missed practice again on Thursday, and HC Andy Reid listed him as questionable for this week's game in San Francisco. Last week, Westbrook left the Thursday practice early and did not practice on Friday, but was listed as probable the whole time. There was never much serious concern that he might sit out the home opener. This will be a tougher call, especially since the problem is not a new one, but has lingered from last week. RB Correll Buckhalter is the primary backup, and would start if Westbrook can't go.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) missed practice Wednesday because of a sore knee and is questionable for the game against the San Francisco 49ers. Westbrook missed practice last week because of swelling in his knee but did play in Philadelphia's loss to the New York Giants in overtime. Westbrook rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown and caught seven passes for 56 yards.

*** Friday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) practiced Friday and is expected to start against the Giants on Sunday. "My thing with Shaun early in the week he had to stay in it mentally in studying," coach Mike Holmgren said Friday after Alexander participated in the entire practice on a foot he injured during the season-opening win at Detroit on Sept. 10.

"So for knowing what to do, I think he's going to be fine. And he tells me he feels much better. So if he feels better, then we absolutely did the right thing. We'll see how it feels during the game."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) did not practice again on Thursday but remains probable for this weekend. He was asked by reporters Thursday if it hurt when he cut or when he put weight on it and he smiled and chuckled when he replied, "All of the above. It's just one of those things."

When asked if it was a bruise or a strain, he smiled and said, "Whatever you want to call it. I'm not a doctor. It's sore. And the good thing about soreness is that it stops. It's a lot better today than it was the last two weeks." When asked if he'd practice Friday, Alexander said, "Likely".

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Shaun Alexander (SEA) missed the Seahawks' practice Wednesday with a foot injury, but he is probable to start Sunday's showdown with the New York Giants. Alexander injured his left foot while rushing for 51 yards in Seattle's Sept. 10 win at Detroit. He did not miss practice last week and played throughout most of last Sunday's win over Arizona with the foot still sore. When asked if the team's approach with Alexander had moved beyond precautionary to concerning, coach Mike Holmgren paused and said, "Well, I wouldn't call it ... his foot is sore. So until the soreness is out, we're going to give him a couple of days. We're just trying to calm it down a little bit." Alexander has started 68 of the last 69 games - his only missed start in the last five years came on Sept. 21, 2003, when he helped deliver his daughter Heaven. Alexander then rushed to the stadium and entered that game in the second quarter.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) has been rumored to have more severe back issues than most are letting on. ESPN's injury guru, Will Carroll had this on his chat Friday. "Sources tell me that Williams has herniated discs in his back. That's much more serious than back spasms, but something that can be managed. I don't know the severity of the herniations, but the Bucs medical staff has a task ahead of them. I think this downgrades Williams a bit in the short term and makes Michael Pittman a must-have handcuff." It should be noted that Carroll doesn't have many folks who are saying this along with him but it's definitely something to keep in mind. Back issues aside, he's got issues with an offensive line that's been less than effective.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) missed practice last week because of recurring back spasms, but that is not why he has been nearly invisible in the Bucs' two losses. In two games, Williams has carried the ball 23 times for 59 yards. HC Jon Gruden accredited Williams' lack of production to the fact Tampa has fallen behind early and the offense has had to abandon the run to catch up. "I'm fine. The back is not a problem," Williams said. "I played Sunday and it didn't give me trouble. Once I come to the sideline, I've got to keep moving, keep heat on it or it'll tighten up."

*** Friday Update *** RB Chris Brown (TEN) practiced on Friday. He is expected to play this weekend but could be limited.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Chris Brown (TEN) has been added to the injury report Thursday with a toe problem and listed him as questionable. Brown originally hurt a toe in the opener, but played last week.

*** Friday Update *** RB Travis Henry (TEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Travis Henry (TEN) practiced on Thursday but remains questionable for this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Travis Henry (TEN) was able to practice on Wednesday and should be available to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) Clinton Portis is expected to play this week, so it's hard to predict exactly how many touches Betts will get against Houston. The Texans allowed 123 yards rushing to the opposing RBs in each of the last two weeks – not to mention a total of 4 TDs. Betts should see a fair amount of action even with Portis back on the field, so use him if it makes sense (especially as a flex option).

*** Friday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) practiced again on Friday and is ready to go.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) practiced again Thursday and pronounced himself ready for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. "They can expect a full-throttle Portis," Portis said. "It's no setbacks or limited plays for me. I'm healthy and I'm just looking forward to Sunday."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) made it through the entire practice Wednesday for the first time since his shoulder injury. Portis appears set to return at running back for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. He is listed as probable on the injury report. "Clinton looked good. He took the whole practice, felt good," coach Joe Gibbs said. "I think we're OK there."

RB Clinton Portis (WAS) plans to return to the lineup this week against the Texans. "In my mind, there's not a doubt," Portis said yesterday. He sat out the Dallas game because of what he called a "jammed" left rotator cuff, an injury unrelated to the dislocated left shoulder he suffered Aug. 13. HC Joe Gibbs wouldn't commit to playing Portis against the Texans. "Clinton's going to want to play in every game," Gibbs said. "He's a joker and he tried to jerk the media's leg last week." I think because he wasn't playing he wanted the other team to think he was playing." This week, we'll take it day by day."

*** Friday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) practiced Friday and was upgraded to probable.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) missed practice again Thursday.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) did not practice on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury. HC Jim Mora hopes he’ll be able to work on Thursday and play this weekend.

WR Drew Carter (CAR) suffered a broken finger during the team's week two game against the Minnesota Vikings. Head coach John Fox said on Monday that the injury would not require surgery. "I think there was some swelling involved," Fox said. "We'll evaluate it again on Wednesday."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) will be a game day decision. Fortunately, Carolina plays in the early game Sunday so we'll have his game status for you well before kickoff. Check our Sunday Update online for the official word.

*** Friday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) is improving but remains iffy for this weekend. "It feels good; it feels better than what it has before," WR Steve Smith said. "I'm getting (toward) 100 percent." HC John Fox said Smith remains day-to-day, as far as his playing Sunday at Tampa Bay. Later, Smith was asked if he would play if not fully healthy. "Depends on the circumstances," he said. Smith said he isn’t experiencing much physical pain in his hamstring from running the past two days, but added that’s only half of the battle. The biggest question is getting over the mental aspect of the injury. If Smith feels well enough to play on Sunday he might be used primarily as a decoy to take defenders away from Keyshawn Johnson. If he feels better than expected he could see some passes come his way.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) practiced Thursday for the first time since injuring his hamstring Sept. 5. HC John Fox was cautiously optimistic about Smith's appearance, but implied the Panthers are taking it his injury day-by-day. "You hold your breath, but it looks like he made it through pretty good," Fox said. "He looked good in the things he did on the practice field today. We'll just see how he looks and feels tomorrow." It appeared Smith was close to full speed and Fox said they did not limit what he could do in the workout. "We put it on him. Nobody knows their body like themselves," Fox said. "He moved around well." Smith wouldn't say if he'll play against the Buccaneers, saying he continues to be cautious with the injury. "It's not anybody's call but mine. Not the fans, not the media," Smith said. "It's my call, because when all is said and done, if I screw my body up they aren't going to be there." If Smith can go again on Friday, he will most likely play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) is at the center of a new rumor: He's coming back slowly from his hamstring injury as a ploy to get a new contract. The wide receiver shredded that theory Wednesday as he tries to work his way back onto the field for the Carolina Panthers. "For the people who are insulting me and this organization, who think I'm going to stoop down to that level, that's not me," Smith said. "There are a lot of other things I can be doing if I'm holding out. I can go home. I can go to the lake house with my family. I can do a lot of things more important than to make a (fool) out of myself and the organization. You're foolish to think that." Still listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Smith did agility drills and some light running on an adjacent field while his team practiced Wednesday. It was the closest he's come to returning to the field since straining his right hamstring in practice Sept. 5. Before that, Smith missed more than two weeks of training camp with a strained left hamstring and another week with an ingrown toenail that required surgery. Smith would not speculate if he'll return to the field this Sunday.

WR Steve Smith (CAR) flew to Alabama Monday morning to get a second opinion on his troublesome hamstring. According to sources, Smith traveled to Birmingham, Ala., to consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Calls to his agent weren't returned Monday, and Panthers officials won't comment. NFL Network Insider Adam Schefter said, "When you have to go to Alabama to get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, that is a red flag that something is not right with Steve Smith's hamstring." Watch closely to see if Smith can practice Wednesday. If he can't practice Wednesday, that's a bad sign for Week 3.

*** Friday Update *** WR Airese Currie (CHI) did not practice on Friday and is not expected to play this weekend.

WR Antonio Chatman (CIN) is improving. HC Marvin Lewis said, WR/PR "Antonio Chatman is getting better, so we’ll se where he is come Wednesday."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Chris Henry (CIN) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chris Henry (CIN) was taken from the field via golf cart midway through the afternoon practice. HC Marvin Lewis said Henry was okay and had left practice early to get treatment.

*** Saturday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) will play Sunday but it's looking like he'll work as the 3rd WR as he eases back into the system.

*** Friday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) has been upgraded to probable after practicing Friday. HC Marvin Lewis said he's already made the decision, look for Houshmandzadeh to make his 2006 debut Sunday in Pittsburgh. The question is how much he'll be able to play as he's missed quite a bit of time.

*** Thursday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did practice in individual drills Thursday without shoulder pads but did not participate in 11 on 11 work. According to Bengals.com, Houshmandzadeh is trying special inserts in his shoes to help with the heel pain. He thinks he'll play this weekend but he was optimistic he'd play last week too and we know how that turned out. He remains officially questionable for this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) was able to practice on Wednesday. Barring a setback with his heel, he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Chad Johnson (CIN) is not listed on the injury report although he's sore from the tough hit he took Sunday. He's practiced normally this week though and is expected to start Sunday.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chad Johnson (CIN) says the Cleveland Browns were out to get him from the very first snap. The Pro Bowl receiver had his helmet knocked off by Brian Russell on the Cincinnati Bengals' last pass play during their 34-17 victory Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium. Johnson was groggy and needed about a half-dozen stitches to close a gash in his chin after the hit. The chatty receiver said Russell had warned him that the Browns were out to get him. "He told me last year, and he told me before the game (Sunday) that him and Andra Davis, they had one job to do," Johnson said. "It wasn't about trying to stop me, but they had to hit me. At every TV timeout, I would be in their huddle talking trash: 'Nobody's hit me yet, what's going on?' "Finally, I think, in the last three minutes he finally got that hit. He let me know ahead of time." Johnson said he has no hard feelings over the hit, which he described as a clean shot. "I mean, it's the first time I've been hit in six years of playing the game," Johnson said. "It's about time someone's gotten a lick."

WR Chad Johnson (CIN) was not coherent after a shot to the chin late in the game Sunday. He underwent a brain scan. Johnson, who had six receptions for 78 yards and one touchdown Sunday, said his shoulder still hurt after slamming it into the ground on the touchdown grab. "I can't bring it up right now, but I should be fine," Johnson said. Monday Johnson said he would play Sunday at Pittsburgh.

WR Tab Perry (CIN) injured his hip and left the team's practice facilities on crutches on Monday. No additional information is currently available.

*** Friday Update *** WR Joe Jurevicius (CLE) was very limited in Friday’s practice and will not play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Joe Jurevicius (CLE) was limited in Thursday’s practice and is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Patrick Crayton (DAL) will likely continue as the team’s third WR even if Terrell Owens misses time. HC Bill Parcells said that wide receiver Crayton would not be the player to replace Owens in the starting lineup if he's unable to go. "I'm not going to screw up two positions," Parcells said. That means that rookie wide receiver Sam Hurd would probably fill in for Owens.

*** Friday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) is so pleased with how his injured hand is healing, he said Friday that he will "definitely" play for the Dallas Cowboys in Philadelphia on Oct. 8, a game for him that's been marked on his calendar since the schedule was released. "I'll be ready," said Owens, his injured hand wrapped in gauze.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) might not miss any games because of his broken hand. Owens broke the bone leading to his right ring finger Sunday night and had a plate surgically attached to it Monday. Although Owens' hand was swollen and aching Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said he's optimistic the receiver will be back at work next week and catching passes a week from Sunday against Tennessee. "I certainly wouldn't rule it out now," Parcells said. "Maybe five days from now I might, but I wouldn't rule it out now. ... I know we're looking to try to get him moving around pretty good in the next day or so. So we'll see where we are."

WR Terrell Owens (DAL) broke the ring finger on his right hand in Sunday night's game against Washington. He had a plate screwed into the bone attached to his finger during an operation Monday evening. His recovery time is estimated at two to four weeks. "Most of those injuries, when they put a plate in there … that pretty much fixes it," Coach Bill Parcells said Monday, before the surgery. "Once they put that in there, it's not going anywhere, you're not going to displace it again. It's a matter of if you can get it functional."

The Cowboys are off this Sunday and then play at Tennessee before the revenge game against the Eagles. If things go well, perhaps Owens plays against the Titans. If not, you have to figure Owens will do all he can to be on the field against the Eagles.

*** Friday Update *** WR Rod Smith (DEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Rod Smith (DEN) practiced on Thursday and looks to be on track for playing Sunday.

WR Rod Smith (DEN) looks OK for this week three despite his concussion last weekend. It's always a concern when an older player suffers multiple concussions over a short period of time. However team doctors gave WR Rod Smith, 36, a positive evaluation, HC Mike Shanahan said. Smith, who was to undergo a CT scan as a precaution, likely will be listed as probable this week heading into Sunday night's game at New England.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Shaun Bodiford (DET) will not play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Mike Williams (DET) almost joined former teammate Charles Rogers in the unemployment line this preseason. Sources close to the Detroit Lions organization are saying that GM Matt Millen wanted to cut the underachieving and overweight Williams just before the beginning of the season. Apparently, HC Rod Marinelli and OC Mike Martz convinced Millen that they could get the best out of Williams if he were to stay with the team.

WR Koren Robinson (GB) will start to see more work in practice this week with the offense and get into the receiver rotation according to HC Mike McCarthy.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) has been downgraded to out on the team's injury report and will miss Sunday's contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

*** Friday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) did not practice on Friday and is looking pretty iffy for Sunday. The team is leery of rushing him back too soon after he re-aggravated his ankle last week. He'll be a game time decision likely.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) missed practice on Thursday with his ankle injury that he reaggravated Sunday. He's listed as questionable.

*** Friday Update *** WR Matt Jones (JAX) missed practice again on Friday and is at best a game-time decision for this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Matt Jones (JAX) missed his second straight practice on Thursday as he rested his sore groin. He'll look to try and do more on Friday to better determine his status. He remains questionable for this weekend’s game with the Colts. ``We want to be prepared, but we also want to be as healthy and fresh as possible for the game,'' coach Jack Del Rio said. ``We have to get our team ready to play and have a contingency plan in case some guy doesn't respond.''

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Matt Jones (JAX) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend’s game. However, he is expected to practice some later this week and play against the Colts.

WR Chad Owens (JAX) left last week's game with bruised ribs. RB Alvin Pearman took over punt return duties afterwards.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Marty Booker (MIA) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Marty Booker (MIA) was able to practice on Wednesday despite being questionable for this weekend. Barring a setback with his ankle, he is expected to play against the Titans.

*** Friday Update *** WR Marcus Robinson (MIN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Marcus Robinson (MIN) practiced on Wednesday despite being questionable for this weekend’s game against Chicago. Barring a setback with his hamstring, Robinson is expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Troy Williamson (MIN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Troy Williamson (MIN) practiced again on Thursday. He is still listed as questionable for this weekend, but it looks like he’ll be able to play. "Those guys are fighting through their injuries," offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. "They're practicing right now. I don't see it holding any of them back."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Troy Williamson (MIN) practiced on Wednesday despite being questionable for this weekend’s game against Chicago. Barring a setback with his shoulder, Williamson is expected to play.

WR Troy Williamson (MIN) landed awkwardly on his left shoulder after catching his first pass Sunday afternoon. He ran into the locker room, his arm dangling by his side, and emerged 10 minutes later wearing a harness. Despite the injury, believed to be a sprained shoulder, Williamson caught five passes in the fourth quarter and overtime. Williamson finished with six receptions for 102 yards, his first 100-yard receiving game in the NFL. Brad Johnson continued to look for Williamson in clutch situations Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) said Friday that his adjustment to the Patriots' system is going well and that he feels he now grasps the team's entire offense.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) practiced Thursday and was upgraded to probable for Sunday's game.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) was limited in Wednesday’s practice and is questionable for this weekend’s game. Barring a setback, he is expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) was limited in Wednesday’s practice and is questionable for this weekend’s game. Barring a setback, he is expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Plaxico Burress (NYG) missed practice on Friday. He is still experiencing some soreness in his back, but he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Plaxico Burress (NYG) did not practice on Thursday due to tightness in his back. He is expected to practice on Friday and play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Sinorice Moss (NYG) will be out for an undetermined amount of time according to HC Tom Coughlin: “He’ll be shutting down again, until someone tells me further. I don’t know how lengthy, I don’t think anybody does, but the last experience was not a good one.”

*** Thursday Update *** WR Sinorice Moss (NYG) was injured in Wednesday’s practice and could not complete the session. He did not practice on Thursday and will likely sit this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Laveranues Coles (NYJ) was limited again during Friday's practice and remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills. Coles has had his left calf wrapped since Monday, and didn't fully participate in 11-on-11 drills for the third straight day. When asked Friday if Coles would play against the Bills, HC Eric Mangini was noncommittal. "I think Laveranues is a role model of toughness," said Mangini. "Not a lot bothers him, whether it's getting a big hit or getting banged up or any of that stuff. He just pops up and goes. He's outstanding that way."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Laveranues Coles (NYJ) did not practice on Wednesday and was limited in Thursday’s session. Coles is known for his toughness (he hasn't missed a game since his rookie year), but the situation bears watching. On Thursday, Coles reiterated HC Eric Mangini's rule not to discuss injuries, and added, "I'm doing what I can to get back." The veteran wide receiver worked without a noticeable limp but sat out 11-on-11 drills for the second straight day. Coles has had the leg wrapped since Monday. Mangini offered a glimmer of hope. "The one thing that is indisputable about Laveranues is his toughness," Mangini said. "That guy, whether it's catching the in-cuts or dealing with injuries, that guy's got rare toughness. He's working and addressing the injury." Coles agreed with his coach's assessment. "I consider myself having a very high threshold for pain," he said. When asked if that was being tested by this injury, Coles just smiled. "Anytime you play professional football, your threshold's going to be tested," he said.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Jerry Porter (OAK) was reportedly the subject of a phone call placed from Detroit's Matt Millen to Raiders owner Al Davis according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Millen was inquiring about the trade possibility involving Porter although no specifics were mentioned.

*** Friday Update *** WR Reggie Brown (PHI) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** WR Donte Stallworth (PHI) missed practice on Friday with a minor hamstring injury, but he's listed as probable for the game this weekend versus San Francisco. He is expected to play. "It was grabbing a little bit on him today, so I got him out of there before something serious were to happen," coach Andy Reid said of his starting receiver. "He should be fine for the game."

*** Friday Update *** WR Santonio Holmes (PIT) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) practiced fully on Wednesday and will start as normal this weekend against the Bengals.

*** Friday Update *** WR Nate Washington (PIT) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) will actually remain a reserve this week. HC Mike Holmgren said Wednesday that the newly acquired WR will not start for the Seahawks this week against the N.Y. Giants, but he would not elaborate on how many touches Branch and the other receivers would get. Nate Burleson will remain the #2 receiver but Branch is expected to split time with Burleson.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) is expected to start for the team this weekend according to ESPN.

WR Deion Branch (SEA) will be added to the roster to play against the Giants on Sunday. HC Mike Holmgren is already calculating how Branch will divide plays at split end with Nate Burleson. Darrell Jackson and slot man Bobby Engram's roles will remain the same. So the WRs who will lose the most opportunities are Burleson and D.J. Hackett, who has been the fourth receiver in passing situations.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Delanie Walker (SF) will not play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Santana Moss (WAS) did not practice on Wednesday as the team wanted to give him a rest day. He will start as normal this weekend.

Tight End

*** Saturday Update *** TE Todd Heap (BAL) was added to the injury report as questionable after spraining his ankle Saturday. He'll be a game time decision Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** TE Kellen Winslow Jr (CLE) was limited in Friday’s practice, but he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** TE Kellen Winslow Jr (CLE) was limited in Thursday’s practice, but he is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Kellen Winslow Jr (CLE) walked into the locker room, snaked through some TV cameras and kicked off his sneakers. Snatching a pair of headphones from a shelf, he left moments later listening to loud music. No interviews, thank you. Winslow was quiet on Wednesday, a welcomed calm for the struggling Browns. At least HC Romeo Crennel fixed one thing. Crennel said he met with Winslow, who told him "he thought he made a mistake" for going to the media on Monday to publicly criticize Cleveland's coaches for not playing him during key third-down situations and for being too conservative.

TE Kellen Winslow Jr (CLE) vented his frustration in the locker room Monday about being taken off the field on third down and about the team's conservative offense. He said the offensive coaches are failing to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers. Winslow said he's tried talking to his position coach, Ben Coates, and OC Maurice Carthon, but nothing's changed. "Some of the coaches might just be holding us back a little bit," Winslow said. "I think we're being a little too conservative right now and we just need to unleash it," he said. "Why wait? We're 0-2. We've got nothing to lose."

*** Thursday Update *** TE Casey Fitzsimmons (DET) missed the first two games with a broken left wrist. Fitzsimmons practiced Wednesday wearing a cast. The wrist has healed, but pain and the possibility of reinjuring the wrist are still issues. Fitzsimmons was not listed on the injury report.

*** Thursday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) asked to be taken out during parts of the second half and for the entire overtime of the New York Giants' comeback win against the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend. His injured right ankle hurt too much. The frustrated Pro Bowl tight end also wondered why he was playing in the final preseason game when the original ankle injury happened in late August. When asked specifically whether he should have been on the field for the preseason finale, the Pro Bowl tight end refused comment. "I just want to do as much as I can to help this team win and that's frustrating," Shockey said in his first extensive interview in more than a week. "It's frustrating to know I could have made a play and didn't because of my injury. "There is nothing you can do. I have been in that training room 24 hours a day, trying to get it better. It will get better and I will be healthy. I will be a lot more healthy after this bye week." Shockey left no doubt he will play on Sunday when the Giants (1-1) face the Seahawks (2-0) in Seattle. New York has a bye the following week. "He looked pretty good today," HC Tom Coughlin said. "Hopefully he'll make progress again tomorrow."

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) has been battling a sprained right ankle all season. He aggravated the injury late in the Philadelphia game and didn't play at all in overtime. For Shockey to miss overtime reveals how much discomfort he must be experiencing. Shockey might be able to play in Seattle, but he is not going to be anywhere near full strength, nor might he be for anytime in the near future.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) came out of the game after re-injuring his sore right ankle and is experiencing more swelling. Shockey toughed it out for most of the game but couldn't finish. His status is questionable for Sunday's game in Seattle.

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Jerramy Stevens (SEA) is still out recovering from his injured knee.

Kicker

PK Morten Andersen (ATL) has been signed by the Falcons. He is expected to kick short and medium range field goals. Obviously, Michael Koenen no longer has "all three jobs".

PK Michael Koenen (ATL) looks like he's lost his mid and short range field goal kicking duties as the Falcons signed the ageless Morten Andersen.

*** Thursday Update *** PK Mike Vanderjagt (DAL) expounded upon one of his favorite topics, kickoffs, "Shaun [Suisham], like I said after the game, is a weapon. He's not a guy that comes in the game because I can't do it. He's going to save you five, six, seven yards every time the other team starts with the ball. For me, he's somewhat of an attribute as opposed to a liability. But this whole thing is going to come to a head real soon. I'm ready to kick off. I think I can do it. (Parcells) doesn't like my kickoffs in practice, but I've said it a thousand times, I'm not going to go bang kickoffs as hard as I can in practice; there's just no need. If he's going to evaluate me in practice, he's not going to like what he sees. It's just my mentality," he said. "I'm a Sunday guy, or whenever the game is. I just feel like I don't really care if I miss a field goal in practice. It doesn't seem to bother me. I just go out and satisfy what the practice is supposed to do. It's hard enough to get mind mentally ready on a Sunday, never mind Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday." HC Bill Parcells said there is a 12 to 15 yard difference in starting field position on kickoffs between Suisham and Vanderjagt. Sounds like they’re on the same page.

*** Friday Update *** PK Martin Gramatica (IND) was signed by the Colts as insurance for Adam Vinatieri.

*** Saturday Update *** PK Adam Vinatieri (IND) has been downgraded to out and will miss a game for the first time in his 11-year career. Martin Gramatica will handle all the kicking this week.

*** Thursday Update *** PK Adam Vinatieri (IND) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for this weekend. The team signed Martin Gramatica to fill in for Vinatieri if he's unable to go.

*** Wednesday Update *** PK Adam Vinatieri (IND) is iffy for week three. The Colts brought in Martin Gramatica for a workout because they're uncertain about Adam Vinatieri's availability. Vinatieri hurt his groin against the Texans and did not kick the last extra point or the following kickoff. Vinatieri was not talking Wednesday and Dungy said the team had not yet decided whether to sign Gramatica, who has been unemployed since the New England Patriots released him during training camp. "He kicked well," Dungy said. "We think he'll be ready to go if we need him. But we will have to evaluate Adam's situation and see what he can do, then make a decision."

*** Wednesday Update *** OL Miami Dolphins (MIA) The Miami Dolphins have signed OG Will Whitticker to a one-year contract, a source said Wednesday. Whitticker is expected to take the roster spot of starting RG Bennie Anderson, who will be placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery Tuesday for a torn triceps.

OL Miami Dolphins (MIA) The right guard hex struck the Dolphins again, as Bennie Anderson became the fourth this year to go down with a serious injury. HC Nick Saban said that the 6-foot-5, 345-pound Anderson will be out indefinitely. Late Monday night Anderson's agent, Harold Lewis, confirmed that Anderson will undergo surgery this morning. OG Kendyl Jacox, who was signed on Sept. 3, was forced into action Sunday because of Anderson's injury. He was part of an offensive line that gave up seven sacks. Saban said he would be seeking a solution over the next few days.

*** Wednesday Update *** OL Oakland Raiders (OAK) The Raiders got some good news on the injury front regarding their struggling line. G Barry Sims didn't have the hip flexor that was originally feared. He had recovered adequately enough to practice with the team Tuesday. "It's a big relief," Shell said. Not only did Sims practice but so did T Robert Gallery (torn calf muscle), leaving open the possibility he might be ready to return after the bye. "He looked pretty good," Shell said. Gallery labeled his chances of playing against the Browns on Oct. 1 as 50-50.

Defensive Line
