Week 2 Players in the News

The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Marc Bulger (STL) has reached 1,000 completions faster than any quarterback in NFL history. Bulger got there in 45 games, two games sooner than ex-Rams QB Kurt Warner. Drew Bledsoe and Peyton Manning each needed 48 games, and it took Dan Marino 49.

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Lee Suggs (MIA) will be carrying the ball as Ronnie Brown's backup this Sunday and will see significant playing time according to HC Nick Saban. "I think we will use [Suggs] more in a two-back role similar to what we did a year ago," said Saban, referring to the Brown-Ricky Williams tandem that was effective in 2005.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) is expected to start Sunday but questions about his knee continue to swirl. We'll watch this one closely for you.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) says he's feeling better after the back issues and will be ready to roll Sunday.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) and HC Joe Gibbs are not communicating the same message about Portis’ health. "I can't do anything but tell you to wait until Sunday," Portis said. "We've seen some miracle days happen. This isn't a situation for me not to be playing." Yesterday, Gibbs said because Portis didn't practice this week, he would not play in Dallas. But Portis said his practice schedule this week was no different than last. Portis said "I don't make the decisions around here. The best way to say it is that I'm a game-time decision.”

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Keary Colbert (CAR) is expected to start the team's week two game in place of the injured Steve Smith (hamstring) according to the Charlotte Observer. Drew Carter is expected to receive a considerable amount of playing time.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) didn't make the trip to Minnesota and will not play Sunday. Keary Colbert and Drew Carter will try to fill the void left by Smith.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Antonio Chatman (CIN) WR/PR Antonio Chatman is listed as "Out" for this week.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Matt Jones (JAX) was limited in Saturday’s practice with a groin injury and added to the injury list as probable, but he is expected to play Monday night.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) will not be activated for Sunday's game. The team will give Branch another week to learn the offense and he should be ready for next week.

Tight End

*** Saturday Update *** TE Ben Utecht (IND) is healthy for the first time in his three seasons as a Colt. He started and caught three passes for 21 yards last week. He and TE Dallas Clark will be the principals in the two-tight end sets when Houston visits on Sunday. At 6-6 and 251 pounds, Utecht is effective as a pass protector, point-of-attack blocker or as an option in the passing game. It's that kind of flexibility that enables the Colts to run their no-huddle offense. They don't need to substitute. That makes it difficult for an opponent to go to its nickel package, and it produces mismatches.

*** Saturday Update *** TE Marcedes Lewis (JAX) was still limited in Saturday’s practice. He will still be a game-time decision, but it looks like he won’t be ready to go.

*** Saturday Update *** TE Randy McMichael (MIA) spent much of his time blocking during the Dolphins' first game, and after one game he is on pace for 16 catches in 2006. "It's frustrating," McMichael said. "Of course you want to go out and make plays, and I want to catch balls. But there's only one ball, and sometimes your number is called to help the offensive line." Despite the one-catch-per-game pace, McMichael is confident his opportunities will increase, perhaps starting with Sunday's game against Buffalo.

Kicker

*** Saturday Update *** PK Jason Elam (DEN) didn't practice much this week as he's been nursing a sore left hip. But HC Mike Shanahan expects Elam to be ready by Sunday. Elam said he felt better Friday and he would kick Sunday.

Offensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** OL Jacksonville Jaguars (JAX) G Chris Naeole was limited in Saturday’s practice and will be a game-time decision for this weekend.

Defensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** DL Corey Simon (IND) will not play in week two as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

*** Saturday Update *** DL Paul Spicer (JAX) was limited in Saturday’s practice. He will be a game-time decision, but it looks like he’ll play.

*** Saturday Update *** DL Marcus Stroud (JAX) was limited in Saturday’s practice. He will be a game-time decision, but it looks like he’ll play.

*** Saturday Update *** DL Dan Wilkinson (MIA) was convicted by a Maryland jury of defaulting on a 2003 lease agreement to build a restaurant in the state, according to the office of U.S. District Court Judge Richard D. Bennett. Wilkinson was ordered to pay $184,446.81 in damages. Wilkinson missed his fourth consecutive practice Friday (explained all week as “personal reasons”), and is unlikely to play Sunday. DT Jeff Zgonina is expected to take Wilkinson's spot in the rotation.

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Edgerton Hartwell (ATL) was downgraded to doubtful by the team on Friday as he continues to recover from knee injuries.

*** Saturday Update *** LB Hunter Hillenmeyer (CHI) is reportedly unlikely to play in Week 2 as he continues to recover from a concussion.

*** Saturday Update *** LB Mike Peterson (JAX) practiced Saturday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** LB Tedy Bruschi (NE) traveled with the team to New York and will be a game-time decision against the Jets in week two.

Defensive Back

*** Saturday Update *** DB Gerald Sensabaugh (JAX) was limited in Saturday’s practice. He will be a game-time decision, but it looks like he’ll play.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Travis Daniels (MIA) has made significant progress with his sprained ankle and his availability will be a game-time decision, a much more optimistic outlook than earlier in the week.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Chris Carr (OAK) Return specialist Chris Carr (calf) says he'll play. HC Art Shell says Carr will be a gametime decision.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Tony Parrish (SF) believes he has recaptured the strength and speed he had before suffering from a leg fracture last season. The 49ers agree. Yet, going into Sunday's home opener, strong safety stands out as the only position on the team without a "clear-cut starter." according to HC Mike Nolan. Nolan said earlier this week that Parrish and Mark Roman would continue rotating during games with the hope that one eventually takes hold of the job on a full-time basis.

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Kansas City Chiefs (KC) The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that they have promoted quarterback Casey Printers from their practice squad to their 53-man active roster. He will be the team’s emergency QB this weekend.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) The Dolphins switched third-string tight ends Saturday, waiving TE Tim Massaquoi and signing TE Jason Rader from the practice squad. Rader was also on the Dolphins' practice squad in 2005.

*** Saturday Update *** TM New York Jets (NYJ) HC Eric Mangini said the running game this week will be "package-based" and "how the game unfolds" will determine who carries the ball. Veterans Derrick Blaylock and Kevan Barlow are expected to split the bulk of the carries.

*** Saturday Update *** TM San Francisco 49ers (SF) When pressed on who the backup to RB Frank Gore would be if he had to leave the game for some reason, HC Mike Nolan responded, "They're both good backs, I could go with either of them. It depends on the situation. - If he (Gore) broke his left shoe, it might be one back and if he broken his right shoe, it might be another back." So, basically, the 49ers do not have a clear-cut No. 2? "Today, no," Nolan said. "As it goes forward it will answer itself."

All the news

Quarterback

QB Carson Palmer (CIN) suffered no setbacks with his knee after playing week one. "It feels great," he said. "Everything feels great."

QB Drew Bledsoe (DAL) will remain the team’s starting QB for at least another week. Speculation over a quarterback change from Bledsoe to Tony Romo this season died down when Bledsoe played well in the preseason and then started week one. The speculation received a boost Sunday after Bledsoe's three-interception performance. Cowboys HC Bill Parcells said Monday no change will be made. "Not right now," he said. Parcells' commitment to Bledsoe sounds week-to-week as he hasn't made a season long commitment to Bledsoe. He did get testy with reporters though saying that it wasn't an issue and that Bledsoe was his starter without question this Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jake Plummer (DEN) is confident that his play will improve from the opening week nastiness. "I'm going to bounce back," he pledged. "I've bounced back from worse games than that. I feel the two throws that I made on the move, I could make better throws. I've made those plays a hundred times. But that's just the pressure I've got to put on myself to make a more accurate throw, to make those plays."

QB Jake Plummer (DEN) will remain the team’s starting QB. "I'm not going to keep talking about this," HC Mike Shanahan said. "Jake Plummer is No. 1; Jay's No. 2."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Jim Sorgi (IND) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to be available to play in week two.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) was released from the hospital on Tuesday and will continue his recovery from a severe head trauma at home. "He's feeling a lot better and I think he'll feel a lot better when he gets home this afternoon. We'll see where he is from there. Obviously, he's out this week and then we'll see what happens after that," head coach Herm Edwards said. On Wednesday, Ray Anderson, the NFL's senior vice president of football operations, said Cincinnati Bengals DE Robert Geathers hit on Kansas City QB Trent Green was legal. "In other instances this contact might be illegal, since a defensive player has the responsibility to avoid unnecessary contact even when he is blocked by an opponent," Anderson stated. "However, in this case, the late slide and the block in the back were mitigating factors." Green was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

QB Trent Green (KC) will miss at least two games with his concussion. GM Carl Peterson says he anticipates Green will return this season but could not say when. He said that Green's status for this weeks game is "extremely questionable and probably out." If Green is not able to play, Peterson said that QB Damon Huard, who came off the bench versus Cincinnati, will take his spot. Huard is a ten-year NFL veteran and has started six games during his career, all for the Miami Dolphins. This will be his third year in Kansas City. Rookie Brodie Croyle of Alabama backs up Huard.

QB Damon Huard (KC) is expected to start this weekend in place of the injured Trent Green. The Chiefs have a bye week for Week 3.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced all week and will start as normal this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) admitted on Wednesday that the holdout Deion Branch may have been affecting his play. "Last week I spent a lot of energy thinking about it and, at the end of the week, it really wasted a lot of my time and a lot of my energy," Brady said. "It was a big mental drain and I think it affected the way I played. I learned a valuable lesson last week that when something is really out of your control you can't let it drain you. At least I feel like now I can move on. I know he's moved on and I wish him luck."

*** Friday Update *** QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) is expected to start Sunday's game at Baltimore, bruised knee and all. Brooks had a precautionary MRI on Tuesday that revealed no damage to his sore right knee. He practiced with the first-team offense Wednesday. "Aaron was fine," HC Art Shell said. "He moved pretty good. He said it was a little sore, but no problem."

QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) will remain the team’s starting QB according to HC Art Shell. He'll have an MRI on his bruised knee but the team doesn't think it's anything serious.

*** Friday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) practiced all week, but he still remains questionable for Monday night's game against the Jaguars. There have been no setbacks in Roethlisberger's recovery from an emergency appendectomy, and most sources expect him to start Monday night.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) practiced on Thursday. While he remains questionable on the team’s injury report, it looks like he’ll be able to play Monday night.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) returned to the practice field today for the first time since his emergency appendectomy two weeks ago. Roethlisberger has four days to convince HC Bill Cowher that he’s ready to play vs. Jacksonville. “I don’t make the decision if I play or not,” Roethlisberger said. “That’s coach’s call.” Roethlisberger said that he doesn’t have any discomfort in the area of the incision from his appendectomy and has been medically cleared to play. Cowher listed Roethlisberger as questionable for the game, which supposedly means he has a 50 percent chance of playing.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) is questionable for week two. HC Bill Cowher said he won't decide until this weekend on if QB Ben Roethlisberger will play Monday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ben said that he will play. "The kid's been through a lot," Cowher said. "That's the thing that I want to make sure of, that he is comfortable and he feels good about himself. Then we'll make the decision at that point. Again, I'm not ready to say, 'OK, the doctors say he's OK.'”

QB Kerry Collins (TEN) will continue as the team’s starting QB. Billy Volek will remain as the #3 but could still be traded.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Billy Volek (TEN) may soon be in another uniform. Sources confirm the Chargers still have high interest in obtaining Volek and have inquired about him in a trade. However, the Titans currently are unwilling to part with him. The Chiefs have also inquired about Volek. Their starter, Trent Green, is out after a concussion that landed him in the hospital for two days. Negotiations could heat up in the coming days, as the Titans will likely wait until after Sunday’s Chargers game to pull the trigger on any sort of deal with San Diego. Asked Thursday if there was any new information about him being traded, Volek said yes. "But I'm going to kind of keep that confidential now between my wife and me and my agent and just focus on the task in front of us now," Volek said.

Running Back

*** Monday Update *** RB Warrick Dunn (ATL) He had a whopping 29 carries for 132 yards on the ground. This was against a top-notch defense (Carolina). As good as Dunn was last year, we think he might be better this season as Atlanta should be protecting leads in many games this year. Duckett's departure and an improved defense equals increased Dunn production.

RB Fred McCrary (ATL) injured his foot in week one and will likely miss week two action.

*** Friday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (BAL) practiced on Friday and was upgraded to probable. He is expected to play this weekend. Coach Brian Billick said everyone was healthy and ready to go.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (BAL) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Nick Goings (CAR) did not practice on Friday and is not expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Eric Shelton (CAR) said Thursday the coaching staff has told him he'll probably suit up at Minnesota. "It will be a blessing to be able to come in and participate and put on a jersey. That is what I've been wanting to do," Shelton said. "I'm definitely helping out, mostly on special teams. If they put me in there at running back I will be able to go, too." Shelton missed the 2005 season with a foot injury.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB J.D. Runnels (CHI) practiced on Wednesday but is questionable for week two with his injured ankle.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Rudi Johnson (CIN) played the 2005 season in pain from torn cartilage in his left knee. Now, after offseason surgery, Johnson is feeling healthier and his knee feels great. "He's much healthier; he's a lot quicker and faster," QB Carson Palmer said. "His top-end speed is faster, so he's going to be a lot better this year than last year, which is hard to imagine."

*** Friday Update *** RB Reuben Droughns (CLE) removal on short-yardage plays against the Saints last Sunday was evidence that the Browns sixth-round pick Lawrence Vickers would be featured as the Browns short-yardage runner. Droughns had only 11 carries against the Saints.

*** Friday Update *** RB Mike Bell (DEN) has a dislocated middle finger but does not expect any difficulties holding onto the ball Sunday. "It's been no problem at all. I haven't even been thinking about it. I don't see any problems," said Bell. He practiced fully on Friday.

RB Mike Bell (DEN) will not start in week two but will see plenty of action in the RB rotation. He also suffered a dislocated finger in week two, but that is not expected to hinder his play.

RB Tatum Bell (DEN) will start for the Broncos in week two, but Mike Bell will rotate in and see plenty of carries as well with HC Mike Shanahan "going with the hot hand" and giving the back having a better performance a majority of the carries. "I hope it's me that gets hot," Tatum Bell said. "I could go two series and Mike go one series, as long as I get that extra series. I feel like I've paid my dues and earned (the right) to be the man."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB William Henderson (GB) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play in week two.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Vernand Morency (GB) has a role with the Packers. According to HC Mike McCarthy, the newly-acquired Morency will be used by the team on third downs. "He's going to help us on third down," McCarthy said. "He's OK (as a blocker). He's a shifty, make-you-miss kind of guy. He's good on check downs and things like that."

*** Friday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) Coach Gary Kubiak says both Samkon Gado and Ron Dayne will play Sunday. "They’re both going to play, that’s what I can tell you,” Kubiak said of Dayne and Gado. “We have to make sure we play them both and see where they’re both at, but Sam (Samkon Gado) has looked really good coming in here the last two days. He has a limited game plan compared to the rest of the football team and then Ronnie (Ron Dayne) has gotten better through the week. I see (Lundy, Dayne and Gado) all playing in the game unless one of them gets a hot hand. We won’t know until we get into the game.”

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) has moved into the #2 RB role and should see action this weekend. “I’m expecting Ron to play this week," HC Gary Kubiak said. "He practiced well. I’m expecting him to be fine and ready to go. We’ll see when the kid gets here.”

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ron Dayne (HOU) is expected to be healthy enough to serve as the team’s backup RB this week after the trade of Vernand Morency.

*** Friday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) Coach Gary Kubiak says both Samkon Gado and Ron Dayne will play Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) is reportedly third on the depth chart behind starting running back Wali Lundy and running back Ron Dayne but that could change quickly. All three running backs are expected to see playing time each week once Gado has learned the offense and is activated by the team on game day. He's making a strong impression on coach Gary Kubiak. After Thursday's practice, Kubiak said, "He sure looked good today. We won't give him a limited game plan from a standpoint of what he's doing. But, Boy did he look good today. I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the field pretty quick."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Samkon Gado (HOU) has been traded by the Packers to Houston in exchange for RB Vernand Morency.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ciatrick Fason (MIN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (MIN) had 31 carries in week one. That load was the most in a Vikings’ season opener and just two short of the team’s single-game record. The Vikings apparently have no plan to lighten Taylor's load. "Running backs usually get better the warmer they get, the more feel they get for the game," HC Brad Childress said. For all of Taylor's hard work, he rushed for 88 yards and averaged just 2.8 a carry. Childress said the running game is still "a work in progress."

*** Friday Update *** RB Reggie Bush (NO) and his family allegedly received more than $100,000 in cash and gifts while he was at USC according to a report by Yahoo! Sports. For his part, Bush said on Friday that he and his family have done nothing wrong. Regardless, we believe he is no longer eligible to return to the Trojans.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Keith Joseph (NO) will miss the remainder of the season after being placed on the injured reserve list with an injured knee.

RB Mike Karney (NO) strained his calf in week one and will miss two to four weeks.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Derrick Ward (NYG) will not play in week two due to his injured foot.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Reno Mahe (PHI) practiced on Thursday and barring a setback is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ryan Moats (PHI) spent most of practice this week emulating Tiki Barber. Against the Giants, Moats might have to mimic Brian Westbrook. Being himself sure hasn't helped Moats get carries for Philadelphia. With Westbrook probable for Sunday's game because of swelling in his knee, Moats could be in line for some carries. All Moats can do - other than act like the opposing running back - is take "mental snaps" to prepare and learn the offense. Moats and backup Correll Buckhalter will carry the load if Westbrook's knee is still too shaky for him to be counted on.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) is expected to start Sunday but questions about his knee continue to swirl. We'll watch this one closely for you.

*** Friday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) missed practice again Friday but is still listed as probable and is expected to start. When asked if Westbrook would be 100% by gametime, coach Andy Reid said, "Yeah, should be."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Brian Westbrook (PHI) experienced knee inflammation in Thursday’s practice and limped off the field with trainer Rick Burholder. He was added to the injury report as probable. Before practice, Westbrook expressed a desire for more touches. "We're moving in the right direction, but as a running back, I would like to get the ball more."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Najeh Davenport (PIT) is the next in line to try and fill the void left by the retirement of Jerome Bettis. "He's a proven big back," Steelers HC Bill Cowher said. "We were kind of looking for that. He's played third down and fullback, and that gives you some flexibility. ... He was the one guy out there who fit what we were looking for with the makeup of our roster." However, Cowher also added "There are no guarantees about his role, I think he's just excited about the opportunity."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Najeh Davenport (PIT) will get a chance to play Monday night in Jacksonville. "We will see what he is able to pick up and how comfortable he is," Cowher said. The Steelers would like someone to take some carries off the shoulders of starter RB Willie Parker and also to use around the goal line. Davenport, 27, is 6 feet 1, 247 pounds, fits in nicely.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Willie Parker (PIT) may be a thoroughbred, but he's not a workhorse. He got through the season-opener OK despite carrying the ball a career-high 29 times. But that's not the rule, says HC Bill Cowher. That's the exception. "It's not so much his size," Cowher said. "It's his size as it relates to 16 games and wanting to keep him fresh. I don't want to give Willie 30 carries a game, every game." Cowher obviously doesn't want to burn Parker out. He figures Parker will be better prepared for the playoffs if he gets 20 or so carries a game during the regular season.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Stephen Davis (STL) has a ways to go in the conditioning department before he can take on a full role as the #2 RB.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) says he's feeling better after the back issues and will be ready to roll Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) returned to practice Friday and said he does not think his earlier back spasms will prevent him from playing against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Williams had a MRI exam earlier this week and was held out of practice Thursday. "I feel pretty good, went through practice and had a pretty good workout," Williams said. "If push came to shove and it was a game, I could have and probably would have" played.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) had back spasms on Thursday and did not participate in the team’s practice. However, he is expected to play in week two. "It's not an uncommon occurrence. We hope with the day off he'll be ready to practice Friday,” HC Jon Gruden said. "He's one of the toughest guys who I've met. Obviously this is not something that's just gone away overnight like maybe we had hoped. ... Hopefully he gets a good night's sleep and a day's rest helps him." Williams said the back spasms he experienced last Sunday were unrelated to a flare-up that affected him for a few days in training camp. He attributed the spasms in August to not warming up properly. He's not sure what triggered the latest problem. "I don't know, maybe tightness," Williams said. "I went in at halftime. It was just me sitting around. I got very stiff. I came out in the second half, it got tight and it was kind of tough for me to go."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) suffered back spasms in Sunday's game and that limited his effectiveness according to coach Jon Gruden. The team expects him to be ready for Week 2.

RB Chris Brown (TEN) suffered a mild turf toe injury in week one and will be questionable for week two against the Chargers.

*** Friday Update *** RB Travis Henry (TEN) did not practice all week and will be a game time decision this weekend. With LenDale White ready to play, it looks like Henry could sit.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Travis Henry (TEN) is no longer in his walking boot, but he did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for this weekend.

RB Travis Henry (TEN) suffered a mild turf toe injury in week one and will be questionable for week two against the Chargers.

*** Friday Update *** RB LenDale White (TEN) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend. Travis Henry is a game time decision. If he sits, White could get a decent number of carries.

*** Thursday Update *** RB LenDale White (TEN) was a healthy scratch in the Titans’ season-opening loss to the Jets. He says he is poised to make his debut Sunday as the Titans visit southern California to face the Chargers. White revealed Wednesday that he is expected to play this week. “He’ll pass protect, he understands the offense,” HC Jeff Fisher said. “He’s got good hands and he’ll get out in the routes, and he’s proven he can run. He hasn’t proven yet he can run at this level, but he’s got run skills, and that’s why he’s here.” White’s chances to contribute this week increased substantially as Travis Henry watched Wednesday’s practice with a walking boot on his right foot because of a turf toe injury.

*** Friday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) is out for Sunday's game against Dallas according to HC Joe Gibbs. "He didn't practice today...If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said. Gibbs added that RBs Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running back order against the Cowboys. However, when told what Gibbs had said, Portis didn't know the decision already had been made. "I thought it was a game-time decision," he said. "As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going. I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas," said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. "We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in." Portis wore pads and said he "ran a few routes" in Friday's practice, but that wasn't enough for his coach. "He'll probably tell me he can play on game day, but he didn't practice so we'll move him down accordingly," Gibbs said. "Hopefully he's going to be back next week; that would be my hope." If you have to turn in your line up right now, you have to sit Portis. But if you can wait till the last minute, do so as I don't think we're done hearing about this one for this week.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) got some work in on Wednesday but did not practice on Thursday (beyond conditioning and strengthening). However, he still fully expects to play this weekend. "As far as I know I'm playing unless something changes between now and Sunday," Portis said. "I'm real sore. I'm just trying to stay on top of things, trying to build the strength up to where it stays the same so we don't have any setbacks." Portis is listed as questionable on the injury report, the same as he was this time last week. "He's got a little bit of soreness, but he gets better each day," trainer Bubba Tyer said. "His strength is getting back to where it was, so we're taking it day by day."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) was limited in Wednesday’s practice, but he is expected to play in week two.

RB Clinton Portis (WAS) experienced soreness (as expected) in his shoulder after playing week one against the Redskins. However, he did not suffer a setback and will likely start in week two. Coach Joe Gibbs was asked if Portis' role will increase in the Week 2 game and Gibbs replied, "I think it'll kind of go as the week goes. We'll have to see how much he is going to be able to take in practice."

Wide Receiver

*** Thursday Update *** WR Roddy White (ATL) missed practice Wednesday because of a hamstring injury. White missed several practices in training camp with a hamstring injury. HC Jim Mora expected him to return Thursday. Ashley Lelie took reps in White's position.

*** Friday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) missed practice again Friday. It's becoming more likely that Smith will be a game time decision if he is not ruled out earlier. He's officially questionable but most seem to think he's a little worse than that. Drew Carter would most likely replace Smith this Sunday if he can't play.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) missed practice again on Thursday is still uncertain for Sunday's game at Minnesota. Fellow wideout Keyshawn Johnson, though, doesn't want Smith rushed back into action. "You want to have him on the field because he gives you the ability to do some things offensively, but at the same time, you want him out there healthy," Johnson said Wednesday. "Just coming out there as a cardboard cutout does nothing for us in Week 13. If he goes out there and gets hurt now, he does nothing for us. I think it helps if he's out there tremendously, but you've got to go out there with what you've got. You're talking about one individual player. Nobody's Superman. This is not basketball. He helps the team, but at the end of the day, it's not like he's going to pass, punt and kick to himself. This is football; this is 11 guys." That said, Johnson grinned. "Now he needs to hurry and get back because I want to be able to get off and have some fun, and play alongside of him," Johnson said. Drew Carter will likely start if Smith can not go.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) missed practice Wednesday and was listed as questionable for the game. Smith strained his left hamstring during practice Sept. 5 and hasn't been on the field since. The team would only say that he remains day-to-day, but he needs to make some progress before getting back on the field.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chris Henry (CIN) avoided the potential of jail time on Tuesday by pleading guilty to a concealed weapon charge. As a result of the guilty plea, Henry will be serve two years probation, perform 100 hours of community service, attend a firearms safety class and surrender his 9 mm hand gun that was involved in an incident in Orlando, Florida on January 28.

*** Friday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did not practice again on Friday and has been downgraded to questionable for week two. It is very likely that he will not play, so Chris Henry should get another start.

*** Thursday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but he is still listed as probable for this weekend. The key day will be Friday. Houshmandzadeh needs to get some work in on Friday in order to play in week two.

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) hopes to practice this week. HC Marvin Lewis said, "The only guy we were dealing with this past week was T.J. Houshmandzadeh (heel), and he should have an opportunity to play this week if he is able to get out there and practice this week."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Joe Jurevicius (CLE) reportedly does not have broken ribs although he still has an injury to that area including bruised ribs. He will most likely be out of action this week, but he could be available shortly after that. You might want to scan your waiver wire to see if he has been dropped.

*** Friday Update *** WR Brandon Marshall (DEN) said his preseason knee injury is completely healed and he expects to play. Marshall, who could emerge as Denver's No. 3 receiver, hasn't played since he suffered the injury Aug. 11. "I'm much better than last week," said Marshall who is rebounding from his first significant injury. "I don't think I was mentally back last week. I was still worrying about the knee. I feel 100 percent now."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Brandon Marshall (DEN) will get his first action this week versus Kansas City after recovering from his partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the preseason. The fourth round standout from Central Florida is expected to fill the WR3 position on the Broncos WR depth chart.

WR Az-Zahir Hakim (DET) has been reunited with coach Mike Martz as he was signed by the Lions.

*** Friday Update *** WR Mike Williams (DET) has his weight down in the 220s, and OC Mike Martz gave Williams a fresh start last Friday. "He needed that," Martz said Thursday. Martz said the coaches were trying to teach Williams what it took to be an NFL player, and Williams was starting to "get a pretty good hold of that." "He's had a real good week of practice," Martz said. "I'm real pleased with his effort and where he is. He's making progress, and that's a real good thing to see."

WR Mike Williams (DET) does not play special teams and that will likely keep him inactive for much of the season. Right now, it seems that his only real chance to see action is for Roy Williams or Corey Bradford to miss with injury. His playing chances have lessened even further with the recent addition of Az-Zahir Hakim.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Roy Williams (DET) has a suggestion to jump-start the Lions' offense. Start WR Mike Williams. "I would like Mike Williams to be my counterpart," Roy Williams said. "It would be like, which Williams are you going to cover? But he has to go out and work. I think it can happen." Mike Williams did not dress in the opener against Seattle, a 9-6 loss, although he was healthy.

WR Roy Williams (DET) says that his Lions will beat the Chicago Bears this week in Soldier Field. "We'll win this game," Williams said Monday. "You can take that as a guarantee…or whatnot, but we will win this game." He backed off a few moments later.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Koren Robinson (GB) will have to tend to some legal affairs soon, due to his most recent arrest for DUI. Robinson is due in court in Kirkland, Wash., on Oct. 4. He must appear in person to meet with a judge to determine whether he violated his parole from a previous DUI charge in June 2005. On Oct. 17, he will have to appear in a Nicollet Co. (Minn.) court on six criminal counts, including a felony for fleeing police and two misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree driving while impaired related to his arrest Aug. 15 in Mankato, Minn. He could face a possible year-long suspension by the NFL.

On the plus side, Robinson wants to play this weekend. "I might get a couple of snaps, I might not," Robinson said Thursday. "I might just cheer my team on from the sideline. But like I said, I'm in the playbook, trying to learn it, so I can come out there next Sunday, this Sunday, and do what I can do." Robinson added that receivers Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson and even rookie Greg Jennings are helping him learn the offense -- part of a warm reception he has received despite his off-the-field problems. "I'm not a cancer or nothing like that to the locker room," Robinson said. "(I'm) a good guy, like to laugh, have fun, you know, joke around. And like I said, I already know some of these guys. The Green Bay Packers have given me the opportunity, and I'm going to try to make this my home. I'm going to try to retire as a Green Bay Packer."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Koren Robinson (GB) practiced with his new team Wednesday. He took snaps at wide receiver alongside Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and the rest of the Green Bay receivers. The Packers signed Robinson after he was cut by the Minnesota Vikings following his latest arrest for drunk driving.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) did not practice on Thursday and his status will be decided later this week. Although it's looking pretty iffy for him this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) did not practice on Wednesday and needs to improve in order to play in week two.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) was limited in practice with the hamstring injury and is listed as probable to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) partially participated in Friday’s practice and looks like a game time decision for this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) is listed as questionable with the hamstring and may be inactive again this week.

WR Joe Horn (NO) did not play "particularly well" against the Browns according to HC Sean Payton. "There is a run or two where we might have scored with just the effort down the field," Payton said. "That is something we can do a better job moving forward. I think Joe would say the same thing after he sees the tape. He had a big catch for us later in the game. It wasn't one of his better games. I think he can play better."

*** Friday Update *** WR Jerry Porter (OAK) will likely be inactive again this weekend as HC Art Shell says he expects to use the same set of receivers that played in week one.

*** Friday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) is still expected to be a game day decision. Although it's possible a decision will be made on Saturday. The team likes how he's picked up the offense and the verbiage seems to be the main sticking point right now.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) isn’t a definite scratch for this weekend after all. HC Mike Holmgren isn't sure now whether WR Deion Branch will play in Sunday's home opener against the Cardinals. He put on a pretty persuasive performance Wednesday in his first practice with the Seahawks. This was his first practice since mid-January, and he looked quick, and explosive. "We'll go right down to the wire on that one," Holmgren said, meaning Branch is likely to be a game-day decision. QB Matt Hasselbeck said he'd be very surprised if Branch did not play.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Deion Branch (SEA) is at least a week away from stepping on the field as a Seahawk. HC Mike Holmgren said Branch will likely remain on the sidelines for Sunday's game in Arizona. Holmgren said Branch should be prepared the following week. However, according to other reports, the Seattle Seahawks are expected to deactivate Branch for the next two weeks, in order to allow him time to learn the team's offense. Meanwhile, the Patriots have filed a grievance against their former receiver Deion Branch seeking approximately $730,000. The total is a combination of fines from Branch's holdout and a fifth of his original 1 million dollar signing bonus.

WR Deion Branch (SEA) has been traded from the Patriots to the Seahawks in exchange for a first round pick. He signed a six-year, $39 million contract with Seattle on Tuesday and will receive a $13 million bonus. According to the NFL Network's Adam Schefter, the team plans to bring him along slowly and is targeting the October 1st game for Branch's debut. Although that plan could be accelerated.

"I told him that I didn't think he should speak for Leigh Bodden," Romeo Crennel said. "He should let Leigh Bodden speak for himself in that situation." Crennel said the Browns know Winslow's personality. "I don't think that he can play defensive back, and I don't know what his abilities would be at that position." That’s good stuff from Crennel.

*** Friday Update *** TE Casey Fitzsimmons (DET) signed a four year contract extension on Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

*** Thursday Update *** TE Ben Utecht (IND) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Ben Utecht (IND) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play in week two.

*** Friday Update *** PK Mike Vanderjagt (DAL) has been kicking with the first team and might even kick off an NFL source said. "It's a weight off his shoulders," the source said. "He's very confident and in a good frame of mind." HC Bill Parcells said he would decide after today whether he would carry two kickers in Sunday night's game. Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is not concerned. Expect Vanderjagt to kick Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** PK Mike Vanderjagt (DAL) is healthy, but he is still an unknown for this weekend. "I want to see him consistently make kicks in practice," said HC Bill Parcells. "I don't judge it on one day one way or the other. I want to take a look at the entire week, and at the end of the week we'll decide who's going to go." Parcells had been adamant about not activating two kickers last week but he now sounds like he's considering at least the idea that Vanderjagt and Shaun Suisham could be available if he sat out a running back or a linebacker. "In both cases, it would take a pretty good special teams player out of the mix," Parcells said. "It's not something I look forward to trying to decide."

PK Mike Vanderjagt (DAL) was reportedly healthy in week one, but HC Bill Parcells benched him for inconsistent practices. Vanderjagt will need to improve in practice this week in order to play in week two.

*** Thursday Update *** OL Kansas City Chiefs (KC) Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Willie Roaf asked team president Carl Peterson on Tuesday to change his roster status from Reserve/Did Not Report to Reserve/Retired, further ending speculation of his return. “I’ve gone through this retirement process with players many times,” Peterson said, “It is never easy; it comes to all players sooner or later, and we respect Willie’s decision. LG Larry Allen has already been ruled out because of a strained MCL in his left knee that is expected to sideline him up to four weeks. HC Mike Nolan wants the makeup of his O-line to remain a mystery this week for the Rams, as he believes it might give his team an edge this Sunday. "I really don't know how it's going to work out," Nolan said earlier this week. "Even if I did, it would behoove us not to say anything."

HC Jim Mora tried to put up a confident front -- or maybe a smoke screen for the Bucs -- by listing his defensive star as questionable, which is supposed to mean he's got a 50-50 chance of playing Sunday. Abraham has "made a lot of progress this week," Mora insisted. "We're just going to take it day by day and see how he feels that day." However, various reports have Abraham not returning until as late as week five.

Wilkinson's game time status is unknown and HC Nick Saban continues to refrain from comment. Sources say Wilkinson will not play this weekend and expect Jeff Zgonina to start in his place.

*** Wednesday Update *** DL Dan Wilkinson (MIA) missed his second straight practice Wednesday because of personal reasons. "It's excused," head coach Nick Saban said. "It's a personal issue.
