Week 18 Players in the News

All the news

Quarterback

*** Thursday Update *** QB Rex Grossman (CHI) says he learned an important lesson by not giving it "100 percent" while preparing for Chicago's regular-season finale against the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. "In this league, especially at this position, you have to bring it every single week, no matter what," Grossman told the Chicago Sun-Times for Thursday's editions. "And the situation was I felt like I was going to play about a half, and it was the last game, it was New Year's Eve -- there were so many other factors that brought my focus away from what is actually important, and that's something that I am never going to do again. There is too much I am responsible for to not give it 100 percent during the week and just the full attention. It's another lesson."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Rex Grossman (CHI) HC Lovie Smith isn’t changing quarterbacks. "As far as our quarterback position, we’re in the same place we were. Rex Grossman is our starting quarterback, and we’re going to go from there." Although most expect Grossman to have a short leash.

QB Tony Romo (DAL) has struggled lately, but HC Bill Parcells is sticking with him. Parcells emphasized he still wants Romo to try making things happen -- he just wants him to be smart about when and how he tries it. "I don't want to discourage his ability to create," Parcells said. "But the judgment has to improve on some things or else you have what happened on Sunday." Parcells was asked if Romo's inexperience was a factor. "No," Parcells said. "Overconfidence."

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) is skipping the ankle surgery he was supposed to have this week. HC Mike McCarthy said on Wednesday that Favre has not gone through with the arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle that originally was scheduled for Monday. And McCarthy seems to think that the three-time MVP might put the procedure off for yet another year. "I don't know," McCarthy said. "I thought he was going to get it done Monday, but I guess this is year seven in a row that he has not gone through with it." The decision to skip surgery may have no bearing on the broader question of whether Favre will return to play for the Packers next season, as the quarterback has been playing with a buildup of bone spurs in his ankle for years. "It's up to him," McCarthy said. "He's played with it now for seven years, so it's something that really is a nuisance more than anything." Favre said last week that he is reluctant to have surgery because he has gotten used to the pain and the limited range of motion in his ankle. The pain, he said, is worse in practice because in games, you just "suck it up and go. I don't want to sound like John Wayne," Favre said. "It's not, 'Favre's walking around with knives sticking in his foot.' It's painful at times, but there's a lot of people who go through similar things."

*** Friday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) practiced on Friday with the team walk through and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) participated fully in Thursday's practice. He was limited in practice Wednesday, and there are signs that HC Herm Edwards may have his struggling quarterback on a short leash. Green, who committed three turnovers and got booed in Sunday's playoff-clinching victory over Jacksonville, is still slated to start Saturday at Indianapolis. But waiting in the wings is fan favorite Damon Huard, who was an impressive 5-3 in eight starts while Green recuperated from a severe concussion sustained in the season opener. "I anticipate (Green) starting," Edwards said Wednesday. "But we'll see how far he comes along tomorrow." Later Edwards added that changing QBs in the playoffs isn’t out of the question. "You have to win the game," Edwards said. "There's no tomorrow. And you have to do whatever is best for the football team at that point. I'll do whatever I have to do. When you're in the playoffs, you're desperate."

Green said Wednesday he's not looking over his shoulder. "I'm more worried about the Colts' defense and trying to get as healthy as I can for this game," he said. "I've taken some shots the last few weeks and am trying to get as healthy as I can and worry about the Colts' defense. Whatever everybody else is saying or whatever decisions are being made, the Colts are my main focus." Told that he would be giving hope to the anti-Green clamor, Edwards became defensive. "People will think whatever they want to think," he said. "At the end of the day, I make the decisions. I made a decision to start Trent when he was ready to play. He's our starting quarterback. He's our starting quarterback going into the playoffs, and I anticipate he's going to play good." Huard said he's not expecting to play against the Colts. "I'm just going to prepare the same as I always prepare every week," he said. "You've always got to be ready to play on a second's notice. You never know, just like last Sunday. I had to go in there when Trent got nicked up. So you're always ready to play." Green practiced fully on Thursday and remains probable on the team’s injury report.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Trent Green (KC) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend. However, he might have a short leash. When Green made his return six weeks ago, HC Herman Edwards said he’d stick with his quarterback through thick and thin. But things have changed a little since then. The Chiefs are in the playoffs now, and Edwards said if the offense struggles and needs a jolt Saturday in Indianapolis, he’d be willing to turn to Damon Huard.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Brad Johnson (MIN) A meeting Tuesday between HC Brad Childress and Brad Johnson did not lead to the veteran's release but all indications are Johnson will leave prior to the start of the NFL's free-agency period in March. "You don't want to hold somebody here against their will if he doesn't want to be here," Childress said.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) practiced fully on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Koy Detmer (PHI) We have a correction to yesterday's Players In the News. All indications in Philadelphia are that Detmer will be listed as the team's #2 QB for the playoff game vs. the Giants, and Feeley will be deactivated. This will allow Detmer to hold for kick attempts. If Garcia was to miss a play or two Detmer would be the QB, but if Garcia was totally knocked out of the game, then Feeley would be the QB. Many thanks to Footballguy Brian Engelhardt for pointing this out to us.

*** Thursday Update *** QB A.J. Feeley (PHI) HC Andy Reid confirmed yesterday that he plans to designate A.J. Feeley as the third quarterback, which means neither starter Jeff Garcia nor holder Koy Detmer could return to the game if Feeley entered the game before the fourth quarter. "It's no big deal," Feeley said when asked about being designated the No. 3 quarterback. "If anything would happen to Jeff, I know I'm going in. It's not about ego."

*** Friday Update *** QB Philip Rivers (SD) is now out of the protective boot he has been wearing after suffering a sprained foot Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Philip Rivers (SD) did not practice on Wednesday while backup QB Billy Volek took the snaps. "I will feel good," said Rivers, who wore a protective boot on his sprained right foot and was mostly a spectator while his San Diego Chargers practiced. "It's pretty sore," Rivers said. "It's not unbearable. If we had to roll tonight, I'd be ready to roll. It's not real comfortable, so we're taking care of it this week since we have some time. I need to get a good week of practice next week before the game." Rivers doubts he'll take any reps this week.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Philip Rivers (SD) HC Marty Schottenheimer said an MRI on Rivers' sprained right foot showed no structural damage.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Vince Young (TEN) won the Associated Press Offensive Rookie Of the Year Award on Wednesday.

Running Back

RB Domanick Davis (HOU) appeared in Houston's locker room Monday with a new haircut, a new attitude and most surprisingly a new name in Domanick Williams; his mom’s maiden name. "I'm a new man," he said. "I had to do it and it was time. I didn't want my kids to grow up carrying something else that I'm really not," said Williams who says he is feeling great and can’t wait to get back on the field. "I felt like it was the perfect time for me to do it. Come back fresh, come back new."

*** Friday Update *** RB DeDe Dorsey (IND) faces one misdemeanor count of carrying a handgun without a license after he was stopped for speeding by the Indiana State Police on Wednesday night. He was released after posting a $15,000 bond and is scheduled for a pretrial conference Wednesday. The gun was a .45-caliber Springfield semiautomatic, and Dorsey also had an AR15 in the Tahoe that he said belonged to a friend who had a permit.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) confirmed that his agent already has asked the Jags to double his salary, from $2.25 million to $5 million. He grew upset during the bye week when the team wasn't willing to discuss his contract, but HC Jack Del Rio said Monday the club is willing to keep Taylor with a better deal. It would feel like it would be everything," Tomlinson said. "It couldn't happen to a better person, a man who is the face and the perfect representative of the National Football League," FB Lorenzo Neal said. "He represents what every player should be."

Wide Receiver

WR Keyshawn Johnson (CAR) said during an interview on Sunday that if the team does not bring back offensive coordinator Dan Henning in 2007, he will likely retire. "I came here because Dan is my guy and how familiar we are with each other," Johnson said. "I really have no idea what I'm going to do at this point. I'm going to take some time this off-season and consider what I want to do. Sundays are great, but it's the mental part the other six days of the week that really wear you down."

WR Braylon Edwards (CLE) HC Romeo Crennel had this to say in regards to Braylon Edwards. "We're dealing with a young guy who has a lot of maturing to do." However he went on to say that he believes Edwards will learn from his mistakes. "Some progress has been made. Progress will continue to be made," Crennel said. "He'll be a good football player for Cleveland Browns and good citizen for the Cleveland community." Joe Jurevicius has a strong message for fellow Edwards heading into the off-season: eliminate the distractions. "A lot of the criticism of Edwards was deserved, but the most important thing to remember is Braylon is a phenomenal athlete and a great receiver," Jurevicius said. "Hopefully, he'll learn that some of the things he did this season were distractions. Those are some of the things we need to eliminate as a team." Jurevicius said the Browns had more distractions than any other team he's ever played on, and all those teams went to the Super Bowl.

*** Friday Update *** WR Terry Glenn (DAL) and Terrell Owens are hungry and hope to feast on an injury-riddled Seattle secondary in Saturday night's NFC wild-card game. Seattle starter, CB Kelly Herndon and backup CB Jimmy Williams, are on injured reserve. CB Marcus Trufant, who starts opposite Herndon, is doubtful. "Obviously, every game we're going to come in and try to pass the ball. But since they're depleted at corner, it makes it a little more special," Glenn said.

Even if that wasn't the case, Horn insisted he would make his way onto the field next weekend. The Saints' players got back to work Thursday after a three-day break.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Joe Horn (NO) is expected to participate Friday when the team returns to practice. "I'm anxious to see how Joe Horn's doing," HC Sean Payton said. "I have an idea of how he's doing, but without seeing him on the field, it's tough to tell. I'll see him run today, and we'll see him practice Friday to evaluate his condition."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Joe Horn (NO) hopes to practice late this week as the team starts preparing for their game in the 2nd round of the playoffs. "I'm anxious to see how Joe Horn's doing," coach Sean Payton said Wednesday in his first meeting with reporters since last Sunday's regular season finale. "I have an idea how he's doing, but without seeing him on the field, it's tough to tell. We'll see him run tomorrow and practice Friday."

"It's going to be a game-time decision whether I am going to play or not," Jackson said. "But every day is looking brighter and brighter. It's getting better faster than I thought. I want to get out there a lot, to help this team start a tradition of getting into the big games, the NFC championship."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Darrell Jackson (SEA) did not practice on Tuesday and is questionable for this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Torry Holt (STL) will decide whether or not to have knee surgery in the next couple days. While he hasn't seen a doctor yet, Holt thinks his recent knee problems are related to his 2006 injuries. He believes he may need arthroscopic surgery to clean out his knee. "By having an injury like this before, I would say it's cartilage," Holt said. "I don't think it's anything that is going to end me. I think it's going to take some minor things to punch a couple of holes in there and straighten some things out and let me get back to playing football. I'm looking forward to making a decision, whatever it may be, and relaxing and enjoying '07 with some drinks and few cigars and just hanging out."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR David Givens (TEN) has a long road back to playing football again, but he is optimistic of playing next season. Givens, signed to be the team’s No. 1 receiver, was limited to just eight catches and was plagued by first a broken hand, then a season-ending knee injury. "I tore my meniscus. My meniscus had to be repaired," Givens said. "I broke a bone in my knee, and I had to have some bone plugs put in a spot where my bone was broken. I had the ACL torn, and that was repaired. There’s a few things that were done." I hope to be back next year. That’s my plan."

*** Friday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) made it through his second-straight full practice Friday, but his coach remained noncommittal about whether the Pro Bowl player would be on the field Sunday. HC Tom Coughlin said Shockey made good progress this week but stopped short of saying he'd play in the NFC Wild Card game at Philadelphia on Sunday. Shockey is still listed as questionable.

Philadelphia defensive cooridinator Jim Johnson said the Eagles expect Shockey to play. "I cannot imagine that Shockey will not play," Johnson said. "Right now we are going into the game saying that Shockey is going to be there."

*** Thursday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) practiced partially Thursday. "Jeremy, we worked in as best we could," coach Tom Coughlin said. "And he did well with the opportunities that he had and hopefully tomorrow will be even more progress."

The team seems intent on not rushing him back too soon.

"The plan is to work him, as he’s coming back, a certain amount just to make sure that he can progress the next day," he said. "I don’t want any setbacks."

When asked if it was necessary that Shockey be able to practice extensively in order to play in the game, Coughlin took a soft stance:

"Not necessarily, no," Coughlin said.

*** Thursday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) did light work on the sideline Wednesday but did not participate in the team portion of practice because of his sprained left ankle. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles after missing the regular-season finale. "The swelling is down considerably from what it was last week," HC Tom Coughlin said yesterday morning. "He improves each day. We're just going to have to see about that." Shockey said, "I feel better than I did a week ago. It feels sore. It's progressing." Shockey was able to practice fully on Thursday, but the key test will be to see how his ankle responds Friday.

*** Wednesday Update *** TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) says his swollen left ankle has improved considerably and there is a chance the Pro Bowl tight end will play for the New York Giants on Sunday in the NFC wild card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. "I want to play every Sunday," Shockey said Wednesday. "I felt bad I couldn't play last week. It's the nature of this sport, being hurt. You have to deal with the injuries. It's the one thing I don't deal with very well. It's getting better every day and hopefully I'll be able to do something this week." He was limited in Wednesday’s practice but hopes to practice fully on Thursday.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) missed last week with an injured ankle and will be evaluated further this week. "Not sure about that," Tom Coughlin said yesterday when asked about Shockey's return. "We left him here so he could continue his treatment and would not be standing on it so we have a good chance of getting the swelling down. We've very hopeful."

But he paid his debt, his case was dismissed, and he was released on Wednesday. Verba has had at least two previous unpaid debts in Las Vegas submitted to the district attorney's office. One was for $600,000. Both were dismissed when Verba paid in full.

A state trooper made the arrest Tuesday after pulling over a vehicle on Interstate 94 near Foster for speeding. Authorities said Verba, 33, was a passenger in the vehicle. Capt. Doug Notbohm, commander of the Wisconsin State Patrol in Eau Claire, said Verba was cooperative throughout the process. "The officer recognized the name, and (Verba) voluntarily identified himself as an NFL football player," Notbohm said Thursday. The trooper discovered that Verba had a felony arrest warrant from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the bad check unit of the Clark County, Nev., district attorney's office. Notbohm said he was told Verba had resolved a misunderstanding regarding an outstanding debt with a Las Vegas establishment.

But the Texans will not have their starting left offensive tackle back any time soon. In fact, what appeared to be a bright NFL future for Spencer is now in question because of cartilage around his knee that was damaged due to the injury. Doctors cleared Tobeck to return on the Thursday before the regular-season finale, surprised at how quickly the hip healed.

Linebacker

LB Dan Morgan (CAR) said Monday he's been cleared to return to football in 2007 despite suffering multiple concussions. Morgan suffered at least the fifth concussion of his career in the season opener against Atlanta and missed the rest of the season, putting his playing career in jeopardy. But Morgan said he was in Pittsburgh last week, where he took numerous tests and a team of physicians led by concussion expert Dr. Mickey Collins gave him the clearance to begin playing again during minicamp in the spring.

Guanciale will monitor Pollack's progress over the coming months, eventually making a recommendation on Pollack's future in the NFL.

LB Odell Thurman (CIN) was suspended fort he 2006 season due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy and will apparently need to find a new team if he applies for reinstatement next season. HC Marvin Lewis has been upset with the middle linebacker's repeated off-field problems and took his locker away when the NFL handed down its suspension. Lewis also told Thurman to stay away from the team. "Odell is not a member of this football team," Lewis said Tuesday. "He's on suspension by the NFL. He's got a long road to go. I'm not even going to spend any time talking about Odell. We're talking about our '07 season. He's not part of this football team. We don't need to talk about it." Asked if Thurman could be part of the team again, Lewis said, "I don't know that. I don't see it on our horizon."

And Ryans had more tackles than any of the other five linebackers who won the award this decade, including LB Brian Urlacher and LB Shawne Merriman.

*** Thursday Update *** DB Bob Sanders (IND) practiced Wednesday, the first time he has been able to practice two days in row since he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in late September. "It's been a long time; I'm excited about it," he said. "Came in this morning, I expected it to be a little sore, but I'm not as sore as I thought I would be." Sanders has played only twice in the Colts' past 14 games and not at all since Dec. 3. He is trying to get as much work as possible this week, but HC Tony Dungy said he wouldn't overdo it. "We'll probably slow him down a little bit today," Dungy said. Sanders was able to practice again on Thursday. Barring a setback, it looks like he’ll be able to play.

*** Wednesday Update *** DB Bob Sanders (IND) practiced on Wednesday and is listed as questionable for this weekend.

DB Bob Sanders (IND) is expected to play Saturday when the team opens the playoffs against Kansas City. Sanders said Tuesday his injured knee was feeling better than it has in weeks and planned to practice this week. "I feel good," he said. "This whole week has been making sure I'm able to strengthen it (the knee), and as long as I can do that, I should be OK." If course we’ve heard this story for much of the 2006 season. HC Tony Dungy said Sanders would be re-evaluated throughout the week. The team's Tuesday practice was closed, a rarity under Dungy. "We expect Bob to practice this week, we expect him to play and we think he will give our defense a boost," Dungy said.

General Team News

TM Arizona Cardinals (ARI) HC Denny Green has been fired by the team.

TM Atlanta Falcons (ATL) HC Jim Mora, Jr. has been fired by the team.

*** Friday Update *** TM Chicago Bears (CHI) President Ted Phillips and GM Jerry Angelo said last month a contract extension for HC Lovie Smith was nearing completion. Indications are that a deal already may be in place and the team is waiting for the right time to present it. "The things that need to be announced at the proper time will be announced," Angelo said Thursday on WSCR-AM, emphasizing a new deal was not contingent upon the Bears' playoff performance.

*** Friday Update *** TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) The Browns fired receivers coach Terry Robiskie and offensive quality control coach Carl Crennel, nephew of Romeo Crennel, on Thursday, according to a source. Soon to follow are running backs coach Dave Atkins and tight ends coach Ben Coates, the source added. The Browns will interview former NFL backup QB Jason Garrett for the position of offensive coordinator, and is the first real evidence they intend to replace OC Jeff Davidson, who replaced Maurice Carthon as offensive play-caller after six games.

*** Thursday Update *** TM Dallas Cowboys (DAL) HC Bill Parcells said Wednesday he has agreed with owner Jerry Jones on a timetable to announce whether he will return as coach of the Cowboys next season. "We have an understanding as to what's going to happen," Parcells said Wednesday. "I'll let you know what that is when the season is over." Parcells would not rule out the possibility that Saturday's wild-card playoff game against Seattle could be his last game as an NFL coach.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Dallas Cowboys (DAL) The Cowboys list no one on their weekly injury report. Everyone practiced on Wednesday.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Detroit Lions (DET) The Lions hired HC Rod Marinelli's son-in-law, Joe Barry, as the new defensive coordinator this morning. Barry, the LB coach of the Buccaneers, takes over for Donnie Henderson, who was fired Tuesday.

TM Detroit Lions (DET) OC Mike Martz said Thursday he planned to return to Detroit next season. He has a three-year contract with an option to take a job with another team as a head coach. Martz left the door open slightly, saying he would have to consider an offer to be a head coach. WR Mike Furrey is convinced Martz will be back: "Mike's coming back. I talked to him about that," Furrey said.

Also, Lions owner William Clay Ford has officially retained president Matt Millen for another season, according to a television report. Fox 2 Detroit reported that Millen will definitely return for a seventh season to lead the Lions. The Lions finished the 2006 season with a 3-13 record and will have the second overall pick in the April NFL draft. Millen still has four years remaining on a five-year extension he was given last season.

Plus, in a stunning move by the Lions on Monday, offensive line coach Larry Beightol, who is highly regarded around the league, was fired. The firing of Beightol will come as a shock to many players because he was clearly respected by the linemen. Considering what Beightol had to work with, he did an amazing job. It's believed that Beightol, who can be abrasive and stubborn, had too many clashes with OC Mike Martz, who can be equally as abrasive and stubborn.

And finally, Lions special teams coach Chuck Priefer has decided to retire. His resignation leaves a big void in the staff because Priefer was one of the league's best special teams coaches and is one of Detroit's longest-serving coaches.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Jacksonville Jaguars (JAX) HC Jack Del Rio fired five assistants Tuesday - OC Carl Smith, special teams coordinator Pete Rodriguez, QB coach Ken Anderson and WR coach Steve Walters -- sending a message that he believed the Jaguars were better than their 8-8 record. Del Rio also declined to renew the contract of special teams assistant Mark Michaels. "I think we broke down in some of the fundamental details that I believe in, that we believe in here in Jacksonville, that give you an opportunity to play at a high level," Del Rio said. "And we simply had too many breakdowns from a consistency standpoint." All the firings came at positions where Jacksonville struggled this season.

TM Jacksonville Jaguars (JAX) Five Jaguar assistant coaches were fired today according to firstcoastnews.com Offensive coordinator Carl Smith, Special Teams coordinator Pete Rodriguez, quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson, wide receivers coach Steve Walters, and special teams assistant Mark Michaels were let go.

"I appreciate the effort each of these men gave during their time here,” said head coach Jack Del Rio. "These decisions are always very difficult, but any decision that is made is done solely from the desire to win football games. I wish each of these coaches nothing but the best as they move on."

*** Friday Update *** TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) RB Ricky Williams is taking and passing all his tests in the NFL's drug testing program and intends to apply for re-admission in April, his agent, Leigh Steinberg, said. "Ricky's contract is with the Dolphins and he fully intends to apply for reinstatement in April and return to play for the Dolphins," Steinberg said. Williams is living in northern California, according to Steinberg, and practicing yoga. The forearm Williams fractured while playing in the CFL is healed and will be "just a memory" by training camp.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) HC Nick Saban has agreed to become the new head coach at the University of Alabama, ending his two-year stint with the Dolphins. A source said Saban failed to show this morning for a scheduling meeting at team headquarters with Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga. Saban told Huizenga of his intentions via telephone and then informed all of his coaches by speakerphone that he was leaving to accept the Alabama position.

TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) HC Nick Saban received a one-day extension from Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga to make a decision on whether he'll accept an offer from the University of Alabama to become its head coach. Saban and Huizenga met briefly late Tuesday afternoon following a long day of Saban going over all the issues. Alabama has offered Saban a deal in the area of $40 million over 10 years. Saban spoke with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore by phone on Monday night. "Nick told me he needed another day and would hold off on making any announcement until 10 a.m. on Wednesday," Huizenga said. "I agree with him and understand more now what he's thinking about than I did before we met [Tuesday]." Saban, just two seasons into a five-year deal with Miami, has three years remaining on his contract at $4.5 million per season. While Huizenga has made it clear he is willing to increase Saban's salary, the issue may not come down to simply money. Saban has been quoted as saying he is "really struggling" with the decision.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) HC Brad Childress said Tuesday Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger would wage a two-man battle for the starting QB job. "I want it to be competitive between those two guys," Childress said. Childress made his remarks before meeting with veteran Brad Johnson, who is expected to ask for his release so he can seek other opportunities. Childress said they may add a third guy but that the team wouldn't be shopping for a veteran starter or a backup.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM New York Giants (NYG) CB Corey Webster has been placed on IR with a toe injury. To replace Webster, the Giants have signed CB R.J. Cobbs off their practice squad.

*** Friday Update *** TM Oakland Raiders (OAK) The Raiders announced on Thursday that Art Shell will no longer be serving as the team's head coach. However, Shell may be retained to serve with the franchise in another capacity. A statement released by the team said "[Owner] Al Davis and Art Shell met today and discussed the 2006 football season. TM Philadelphia Eagles (PHI) QB Koy Detmer returned to the Eagles Today to provide insurance heading into the playoffs. Detmer will be #3 behind starter Jeff Garcia and backup A.J. Feeley. Detmer has been out of football this regular season. He has started eight games in his career while serving mostly as a backup to Donovan McNabb and a holder for David Akers. To make room for Detmer, RB Bruce Perry was released.

*** Friday Update *** TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) HC Bill Cowher resigned Friday after 15 seasons as the Steelers' coach. The Steelers immediately began searching for a new coach for only the second time since 1969, a span when other NFL teams have had as many as 15 coaches. Team president Art Rooney II said Steelers assistants Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm are among the candidates. Both are interviewing for some of the other four current NFL job openings, with Whisenhunt already talking to the Falcons and Cardinals.

*** Thursday Update *** TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) HC Bill Cowher will make an announcement about his future Monday, at which time he is expected to retire as coach of the Steelers according to reports.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) It is very possible either OC Ken Whisenhunt or assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm will soon be off the market. With current Steelers HC Bill Cowher seriously considering stepping down, the organization is reportedly pushing Cowher to make a decision quickly, presumably to elevate either Grimm or Whisenhunt to the top job. One NFL source said the Steelers are leaning toward hiring Grimm if Cowher leaves. The Steelers are giving Cowher until early next week to make up his mind - possibly because he likely would have resigned if he had been pressured to make a call this week. Several players who met privately with Cowher said it was obvious he was leaning toward quitting.

*** Friday Update *** TM Seattle Seahawks (SEA) The Seahawks bolstered their depleted wide receiving corps Friday by promoting rookie Ben Obomanu from the practice squad. Seattle waived veteran TE Itula Mili to make room on the roster for its NFC wild-card game Saturday against Dallas.

TM Seattle Seahawks (SEA) The Seahawks have some roster issues to reckon with as they try to cover for injuries. They need to sign one or more defensive backs. They might also need to sign a receiver given that WR Darrell Jackson and WR D.J. Hackett could miss the Dallas game with injuries. Jackson has a turf-toe injury. Hackett's injury was reported to be a groin, but there hasn't been an official word on that. WR Marcus Robinson's name has been mentioned as one possibility. Robinson and WR Nate Burleson were teammates in Minnesota and they share the same agent.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM San Francisco 49ers (SF) The 49ers didn't take long to address the problem of having the NFL's 26th ranked defense. DC Billy Davis and DL coach Gary Emanuel were fired on Wednesday. Both coaches have been with HC Mike Nolan for two seasons. "After an evaluation period, we felt this was the right time to make these moves," Nolan said. "I wish Bill and Gary the very best, and I enjoyed our time together. These were tough decisions, as they are both great individuals, and have the potential to be very successful coaches in this league."

*** Friday Update *** TM Tennessee Titans (TEN) GM Floyd Reese resigned Friday, a month before his contract was set to expire. "I had hopes of signing a contract extension and staying with the Titans for many more years, but it became apparent to me over the last several months that that would be difficult," Reese said in a statement released by the team. Rather than drag out a process that would probably end up with us going our separate ways, the right thing to do is to cut ties now and let the Titans move on and me as well." Reese, who was the franchise's longest-serving general manager, had been with the team for 21 years, going back to its origins as the Houston Oilers.
