Offensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** OL Baltimore Ravens (BAL) Guard Keydrick Vincent is questionable with a groin injury.

*** Saturday Update *** OL Philadelphia Eagles (PHI) The Eagles announced on Friday that they have agreed to terms with G Todd Herremans on a five-year contract extension believed to be worth $16 million to $17 million, including a $5 million signing bonus.

Defensive Line

*** Saturday Update *** DL Vince Wilfork (NE) is expected to play tomorrow when the Patriots visit Tennessee for their regular-season finale. Wilfork’s practiced for the third straight day. He has missed the last two games after spraining his right ankle against the Dolphins. Though it’s unlikely Wilfork will see his usual number of snaps in the middle of the team’s 3-4 defense, just getting him back on the field will provide a boost, as well as ensure that he doesn’t open the playoffs next weekend rusty after having not played in a month.

Linebacker

*** Saturday Update *** LB Chad Greenway (MIN) said Friday that he's ahead of schedule regarding his return from a torn ACL in his left knee. Greenway suffered the injury while covering a kickoff in the team's first exhibition game.

Defensive Back

*** Saturday Update *** DB Aaron Francisco (ARI) has signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him under contract through 2010. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Deon Grant (JAX) says he expects to start the team's Week 17 game after practicing Friday, Dec. 29. "I opened it up and it didn't pull on me, so I think we'll be all right for Sunday," Grant said.

*** Saturday Update *** DB Andre Dyson (NYJ) will not play in the team's Week 17 game.

General Team News

*** Saturday Update *** TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) HC Romeo Crennel is reportedly expected to return next season but will likely be asked to fire some of his offensive assistants. Crennel, however, could be relieved of his duties if unwilling to let go of any members from his staff.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Detroit Lions (DET) HC Rod Marinelli is scheduled to have hip replacement surgery next Friday. "There isn't going to be a long rehabilitation," Marinelli said Friday. Marinelli will have his left hip replaced. The 57-year-old previously had replacement surgery on his right hip, but now walks with a noticeable limp because of degeneration in his left hip joint.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) The Dolphins placed defensive tackle Keith Traylor on injured reserve Saturday with a knee injury, and activated safety Jack Hunt off the practice squad to take his roster spot. Jeff Zgonina is expected to start in Traylor's spot Sunday when the Dolphins finish their season at Indianapolis.

*** Saturday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) Rookie WRs Jason Carter and Martin Nance longed to prove to all the NFL teams that passing them up in April's draft was a mistake. They may get their chance finally on Sunday. Neither Carter nor Nance is sure to play in the season finale, Vikings HC Brad Childress said Friday. But both have received a lot of repetitions in practice this week, and both have been putting in a lot of overtime in preparation for their first meaningful opportunity.

*** Saturday Update *** TM New Orleans Saints (NO) "I was asked that by our media here and I didn't lay out any plans for them and I won't do it now," HC Sean Payton said earlier this week regarding the sitting of key players. "I think it's important that we go in and play this game like we do every week. I told our team that it's important we finish strong and we certainly have a lot of respect for Carolina, a team that beat us the first time out. So we're going full-speed, 100 miles an hour and any decisions we make in regards to any substitutions will be made by me, but certainly won't be announced prior to the game."

Also, the Saints announced on Friday that they have signed RB Jamaal Branch off their practice squad to the 53-man roster. "It’s the NFL," said Branch. "This is the real deal right here."

And finally, the Saints re-signed veteran RB/special teamer Fred McAfee on Friday and released PK Billy Cundiff.

All the news

Quarterback

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Matt Leinart (ARI) received some good news today when the MRI on his sprained throwing shoulder came back negative. The injury will not require surgery. Leinart will sit out the regular season finale with veteran Kurt Warner getting the start.

QB Matt Leinart (ARI) will not play this weekend due a shoulder injury suffered in week 16.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Kurt Warner (ARI) will start at Sunday. He just hopes he gets to throw to his starting receivers this week. Three of the team's top four receivers weren't on the field at the end of practice Wednesday. WR Anquan Boldin missed practice with an illness. WR Bryant Johnson didn't practice because of a hip pointer but is probable. WR Troy Walters, also the team's punt returner, suffered a sprained ankle in practice and is doubtful. That left Warner throwing to WR Larry Fitzgerald and two practice squad players, WR Michael Spurlock and WR Todd Watkins. Boldin is expected back by Friday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Kurt Warner (ARI) on Wednesday said he would return in 2007. Although Warner left himself room to change his mind, it was his most definitive statement yet about his plans. In October, Warner acknowledged he had begun considering retirement after losing the starting job to rookie Matt Leinart. But Warner, who has two years remaining on his contract, said he's looking forward to a 10th NFL season. "I've thought about it a lot, and I'm going to come back and play," Warner said. "I want to play. I feel like I've got a lot of football left in me. Not that that can't change when the offseason comes around and me and my family sit down and all of those types of things," Warner said. "But I signed a contract to be here with the Cardinals." With Leinart sidelined by a shoulder injury, Warner will start Sunday's regular-season finale at San Diego.

QB Michael Vick (ATL) As if Michael Vick didn't have enough to worry about with his team collapsing, he's being sued by his former agent. He's involved in a $45 million suit filed by Richmond sports agent Andrew Joel, according to a report published Tuesday in The Virginian-Pilot.

*** Friday Update *** QB Jake Delhomme (CAR) practiced again today and had no problems. He remains listed as probable and is almost certain to start Sunday's regular-season finale at New Orleans.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Jake Delhomme (CAR) practiced for the second straight day today and was upgraded to probable for this week's game versus at New Orleans. HC John Fox said Delhomme suffered no setbacks yesterday after he practiced for the first time since suffering ligament damage in his right thumb, Dec. 4.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Jake Delhomme (CAR) was back on the practice field Wednesday for the first time since spraining his right thumb Dec. 4 in Philadelphia. He took snaps and threw passes, which are good indications that he could be able to play this week at New Orleans with the playoffs on the line.

QB Jake Delhomme (CAR) missed Sunday's game again with his injured thumb. The team barely threw the ball at all. His status for Week 17 will be determined later this week.

*** Friday Update *** QB Chris Weinke (CAR) practiced on Friday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Chris Weinke (CAR) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

QB Carson Palmer (CIN) didn't put any blame for his play on his shoulder. She said he was fine. "I felt great," the Bengals quarterback said. "I didn’t play great."

QB Ken Dorsey (CLE) will replace Derek Anderson, who suffered a shoulder separation Sunday. With Charlie Frye and Anderson both out of commission, this could also be viewed as an opportunity for him to audition for the starting quarterback job. When the Browns open training camp next summer, the quarterback battle will be one of the most interesting to watch.

*** Friday Update *** QB Charlie Frye (CLE) threw passes during practice Thursday and will be evaluated Friday to see if he can aid the team during the season finale in Houston, HC Romeo Crennel said. "I list him as questionable," Crennel said. "If I like what I see there's a chance (he could play)." While scheduled starter Ken Dorsey has been preparing to start Sunday, Crennel did not rule out the possibility that Frye might start against the Texans. He has missed the past three games after suffering a bone bruise in his wrist against Kansas City.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Charlie Frye (CLE) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for this weekend. However, he is not expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** QB Brett Favre (GB) Chairman and CEO Bob Harlan believes Favre will return to play in 2007 despite speculation that the Week 17 game versus the Chicago Bears could be Favre's final regular season game. "I felt last year that he was going to come back, and I feel right now that he's going to come back," Harlan said.

*** Friday Update *** QB David Garrard (JAX) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB David Garrard (JAX) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

QB Daunte Culpepper (MIA) said Monday he was very optimistic about his right knee. Culpepper said his second surgery has caused him to feel significantly stronger, while also eliminating much of the pain he had been feeling before undergoing the procedure. "I'm feeling great, man," said Culpepper, who did not walk with any noticeable limp. "I feel very good about the progress I've been making. Things are going very well."

QB Joey Harrington (MIA) was benched and Cleo Lemon got his chance and turned it into playing time next week. HC Nick Saban said both Harrington and Lemon will play against the Colts. Saban did not specify which player would start the game. Harrington was benched for the second time in two weeks after he completed 7 of 15 passes for 42 yards. His 53.5 quarterback rating was an improvement from last week's 0.0, but it still wasn't good enough. So Lemon got his chance and completed 11 of 16 passes for 104 yards and the first touchdown of his career, a 7-yard strike to TE Randy McMichael.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Cleo Lemon (MIA) will start against Indianapolis on Sunday. "It's important for us to see where this guy is," HC Nick Saban said. "I think he deserves the opportunity." Lemon came off the bench in the past two games. He replaced Joey Harrington at halftime of Monday's loss to the New York Jets, and the Dolphins' streak of seven quarters without a point ended when Lemon threw for a score in the fourth period. He finished 11-for-16 for 104 yards. "Once he got his sea legs under him, he seemed to do a pretty good job," Saban said. "It's a little bit different being a starting pitcher and being a reliever. Cleo needs to start." Saban said the plan is to play both Lemon and Harrington but would not rule out letting Lemon play the entire game.

QB Cleo Lemon (MIA) will likely see playing time in the regular season finale. "We'll probably end up playing both of them against Indy," coach Nick Saban said.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) returned to the practice field today after missing the last two days of practice. He is expected to play this weekend, but it is reported that he will not play the entire game.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) was the only player not to attend the portion of practice open to the media Wednesday. "You take a good hit on it, it’s always probably a little bit sore, but I’m doing a lot better," he said. Sunday Jaguars LB Clint Ingram drilled Brady in the back, wrenching the his left shoulder in the process. As for sitting out against the Titans, Brady, who has started 93 straight regular-season games, hopes to play. "The best part of the week for me is Sunday," he said. "I’m not ready to give that up. To think of taking a day off or rest me, or any of that, I’m just not up for any of that." Brady did not practice on Thursday either.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tom Brady (NE) was the lone player not present at the media-access portion of Wednesday's practice. He is probable on the team's injury report with a right shoulder injury (as he has been all season long).

*** Saturday Update *** QB Drew Brees (NO) If you have any Saints players you're counting on Sunday, be very leery. Coach Sean Payton hasn't officially commented but most expect the Saints to play their key starters sparingly. Some may even be inactive. Check the Sunday Morning Breaking News page for the latest info.

*** Friday Update *** QB Patrick Ramsey (NYJ) practiced on Friday and is expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) practiced on Friday and is expected to start this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Aaron Brooks (OAK) HC Art Shell wants a far better tomorrow, but he also wants a more tolerable today, which demands some short-term thinking. That's why he'll start Aaron Brooks, if healthy, ahead of second-year Andrew Walter in hopes of winning Sunday's finale against the Jets.

*** Friday Update *** QB Marques Tuiasosopo (OAK) will be eligible for free agency in the offseason and likely will not return for a sixth season in Oakland. "I just want to go somewhere where I can compete and they really want me to play and give me a chance. That's all I really want," the former 6th round pick said. "I feel like if I'm given the proper chance I can be an effective quarterback and win games. I get one game, some quarterbacks get two years, some quarterbacks get a year, some quarterbacks get three years.”

*** Friday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** QB Trent Dilfer (SF) still hasn't played a regular-season snap for the 49ers. He's capably teaching the game to Alex Smith while providing steady lockerroom leadership for a young team. "The best thing you can do as a quarterback is make those around you better," Dilfer said Thursday. "When you're not doing it as a player on Sundays, you need to find other ways to do it." Smith acknowledged he sometimes felt lost without a veteran guidance as a rookie last season, and his bond with Dilfer has grown beyond a mentorship to a strong friendship.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Chris Simms (TB) is remaining with the Buccaneers. Simms, sidelined since the third week of the season after having his spleen removed, signed a two-year contract extension Wednesday and looks forward to trying to regain his starting job in 2007. Terms of the contract were not released, but Simms described the deal as "starter's money" that shows HC Jon Gruden and GM Bruce Allen are committed to him leading the offense. "It's definitely a load off my shoulders," Simms, wearing a T-shirt bearing the words "got spleen?" said. "I'm happy to be back more than anything. I like living here. I like the people here and definitely like the organization. I'm happy it's all done." The Bucs initially believed Simms had bruised ribs and was battling dehydration before he was taken to the emergency room, where it was determined that his spleen was ruptured and needed to be removed. "It's great to have him back. It's unfortunate that he had an injury to disrupt his season," Gruden said. "He's a young guy who's paid a price and we're excited to have him back."

Running Back

*** Thursday Update *** RB Warrick Dunn (ATL) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Friday Update *** RB Jamal Lewis (BAL) According to Mike Preston at the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are likely to cut Lewis rather than be forced to pay him a $5 million roster bonus before March and another $5 million in base salary that he is due in 2007. Speculation is that the team would then likely offer Lewis a one-year deal worth approximately $3 million.

*** Friday Update *** RB Daimon Shelton (BUF) was placed on injured reserve Friday because of lingering effects of a concussion. RB George Wilson was promoted from the practice squad to replace Shelton. He played in three games with the Bills last season.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Daimon Shelton (BUF) will miss the Buffalo Bills' season finale at Baltimore this weekend because of the lingering effects of a concussion. HC Dick Jauron ruled Shelton out on Thursday, saying he has not fully recovered from a concussion sustained while blocking during a kickoff return against Miami two weeks ago. Shelton hasn't practiced since the injury and missed last weekend's game against Tennessee.

RB Mike Bell (DEN) is the Denver's second-leading rusher with 611 yards, and his eight rushing touchdowns put him one away from tying an NFL single-season record for an undrafted rookie. Dominic Rhodes set the mark with nine for the Colts in 2001.

*** Friday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) is ready to return to the field Sunday, but he may face his toughest defense in the offseason, the Jaguars' front office. Taylor, who is under contract for 2007 at a $2.55 million base salary, said Thursday he wants a contract extension in the $5 million range. The Jaguars refused to give him a new deal last year and haven't indicated if they plan to negotiate a new one for next year. Taylor said his present hamstring injury wasn't a major injury and added he's set to play against the Chiefs. "My thing is to finish strong so there won't be any question marks out there," he said.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) returned to practice Wednesday after sitting out last week with a hamstring injury. "I've been running around," Taylor said. "I'm going to attempt to run full-speed] tomorrow or even Friday. I want to at least get the hamstring exposed so there won't be any surprises on Sunday." The Jaguars need a healthy Taylor in the lineup, not only because of the possible post-season ramifications of the game, but also because of the potential lack of depth. Taylor practiced on Thursday and is expected to play this weekend.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) is listed as probable with the hamstring and practiced fully on Wednesday and the team is hopeful he'll be able to play this weekend.

RB Fred Taylor (JAX) missed Week 16 with his hamstring and he'll be evaluated further this week to see if he's able to go for the final regular season game.

"It's my neck of the woods," Barber said. "It's my hometown. (The Redskins were) my favorite team growing up. Joe Gibbs was my favorite coach. In some ways it's kind of ironic, but it's just the way it works out sometimes." Barber added that he will not be overwhelmed with emotion this week. "Just like it wasn't too overly emotional last week," he said. "I love this game, but I also have great excitement about what I'm going to do next. It's a great stepping stone in my life and I'm excited to have one more chance in the regular season.

*** Friday Update *** RB LaMont Jordan (OAK) would like new OC John Shoop to remain with the team in the same capacity next season. Jordan feels Shoop serves as a better communicator than his predecessor Tom Walsh and puts players in the best position to make plays. "I know that Shoop has the guts to try new things," Jordan said. "I think Shoop is the type of coach where if you go to him (and) say, 'Hey, I can do this, put me in a position to do this,' Shoop is the type of coach who's going to say, `Hey, you asked for it, there you go. Make it work.' As a player, you want a coach like that. You don't want a coach where you don't feel like you can talk to him. You don't want a coach where as a player you really have no input. I feel like that's how things were at the beginning of the season."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Mike Alstott (TB) would neither confirm nor deny that Sunday's game against Seattle would be his last, hinting that it would depend on the organization rather than his desire to continue playing. The 11-year veteran had only 32 carries this season before last week's game, when he had 22 against Cleveland, the most he's had since the 2002 Super Bowl. "I'm sure there will be some conversations with the Bucs if I do want to pursue going forward and maybe playing and see what their interest level is of me playing," he said. "I've said I'm a Buccaneer and I'll always be a Buccaneer."

*** Friday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) was forced to skip practice again Thursday and HC Jon Gruden indicated his featured back is likely to miss the Seattle game with a badly bruised foot. "Carnell we have as questionable, but it doesn't appear that he will play at this point. We're not out here for the heck of it. If he can play, he's playing. But right now, it doesn't appear as if he's ready to go," Gruden said. Williams was not able to practice on Friday either.

Last week he caught as many passes as he dropped, two - for 7 yards. Crennel said he thinks Edwards was "disappointed" by his benching, "but I think it got his attention".

*** Friday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) Talking about his broken finger, Owens said the pain can be "very excruciating" depending on how the ball hits his hand. Owens believes he's being treated differently than other players who play through pain. "If it was anybody else gutting it out with the way my hand is, I'm guaranteeing you that they would be probably be saying that he's a warrior," Owens said. "But just because it's me, that's not going to be the case. I understand that. Is it fair? No. But you know what; I have to live with that."

Also, Owens cleared the speculation that the comments made by fellow teammate CB Terence Newman after Week 16 were not directed toward him. "He said it was a message for the whole team, but that wasn't directed toward me," Owens said of Newman's criticism. Newman ranted that some of his teammates did more talking than performing on the field after the 23-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (DAL) admitted his finger injury is an issue: "It's frustrating and I know my hand is messed up, and there's nothing I can do about that until after the season," Owens said. "So other than that, I know I'm not playing and I'm not catching the ball as well as I should have, and I know my hand is a part of it, but I'm not going to make that as an excuse."

Rucker will undergo further tests this week to determine if any damage to the ACL occurred. Because Rucker has damaged his left MCL previously, his career could be over -- sources indicate he is currently leaning toward retirement after this season.

*** Wednesday Update *** DL Mark Anderson (CHI) could be moving into the starting lineup at right defensive end. It's not that DE Alex Brown hasn't played well (the fifth-year veteran was named a Pro Bowl alternate for the second consecutive year), but Anderson just continues to make big plays. *** Thursday Update *** DL Alfonso Boone (CHI) was added to the injury report as probable after missing time on Thursday with a toe injury.

*** Thursday Update *** DL Alex Brown (CHI) HC Lovie Smith said Wednesday that Alex Brown will remain the starter, but that doesn't minimize the pressure rookie DE Mark Anderson is putting on him. The fifth-round pick from Alabama leads the team with 12 sacks, tying him for sixth in the NFL. "There's no change in our starting lineup," Smith said. "We'll continue to play the players like we have. We have three defensive ends. We like them all. All will play."

*** Wednesday Update *** DL Tank Johnson (CHI) was at Halas Hall on Tuesday, and the Bears were glad to see him. He was lifting weights and working his way back from two weeks off. Johnson, suspended for the Lions game and inactive against the Bucs because of off-field problems, is expected to play against the Packers. How much he'll play Sunday night is uncertain. "Football is my focus," Johnson said. "I'm here at work today and I'm excited about work today and I'm excited about learning more about the game this week. Having two weeks off makes you just want to go out there and play even more." Johnson wasn't allowed to be with the team this past weekend but watched the game from afar with a new perspective. "Obviously it's tough [to watch and not play] but I got a chance, kind of like training camp, to give my guys some good pointers," he said. "Any time you can watch from the outside in, you can tell guys, 'Hey, I've seen this or that,' and they're very appreciative of that. I look forward to getting into the mix and someone telling me from TV what I did good and what I did bad." Johnson said his two weeks off didn't have an adverse effect on his physical condition, as he has been "lifting weights hard" on his own.

*** Friday Update *** DL Ian Scott (CHI) HC Lovie Smith is making no announcement on whether Tank Johnson will return to his starting job Sunday, but indications were strong Thursday that Ian Scott will get the nod at nose tackle. He had a season-high five tackles, his first quarterback hit, a tackle for loss and two passes deflected against the Bucs, followed that with three solo tackles in Detroit along with two more deflections and another tackle for loss. Johnson only topped that production once this season.

Assuming Redding signs, he will play along side Shaun Rogers, who will be moved to NT next season.

*** Wednesday Update *** DL Jason Taylor (MIA) says the candidacy of his likely chief rival for NFL defensive player of the year, Shawne Merriman, was tainted by a four-game steroid suspension in November. "You really shouldn't be able to fail a test like that and play in this league, to begin with," Taylor said Wednesday. "To make the Pro Bowl and all the other awards, I think you're walking a fine line of sending the wrong message." Merriman, who plays outside linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, has denied he's a steroid cheat and blamed his positive test on a tainted supplement. "A performance-enhancing drug is, obviously, what it is," Taylor said. "You enhance your performance by doing that. You fail that test, I think it's not right, it's against the rules and ultimately I think it's sending the wrong message to the youth in America and the people who look at this game not only as entertainment but also to learn lessons from it. He's always making plays. He's one of the best young talents we have in this game right now as far as defensively, and he has had an unbelievable year. With that being said, there are certain rules and guidelines we have to abide by to play in this game."

It's believed that Dyson sprained his MCL. No surgery is necessary, the person said. Dyson may be hard-pressed to make it back for the first round of the playoffs if the Jets qualify. Without Dyson, the Jets have four corners - Hank Poteat, David Barrett, Justin Miller and rookie Drew Coleman. Dyson is listed as questionable for Sunday's regular-season finale, although he has done virtually nothing in practice. The Jets worked out two cornerbacks yesterday, journeyman CB Pete Hunter and rookie CB Justin Phinisee, a seventh-round pick of the Bucs. Both players have been exposed to systems similar to that of the Jets, Hunter with the Browns and Phinisee with the Patriots.

Archuleta, signed in March to the richest contract for a safety in NFL history, hasn't played a snap on defense in seven weeks. HC Joe Gibbs and assistant Gregg Williams have not given an explanation for the benching. "Do I deserve and explanation?" Archuleta said. "I don't know if an explanation matters anymore because what's done is done. I pretty much know what's going on. I pretty much know what it all stems from." Archuleta wouldn't go into detail, but he indicated the coaches have not been upfront in their dealings with him. If the Redskins decide to release S Adam Archuleta after the season, they will face a salary cap charge of $9 million, but they could decide to spread that over the next two years with about $1.5 million counting against the 2007 cap. Archuleta has a $5 million option bonus in March and if the team decides to release him before then, Archuleta would be owed the second $5 million payment; his base salaries the next three years would be guaranteed at a sum equaling $5 million whether he is on the roster or not.

Also, the Cardinals placed CB David Macklin and WR Troy Walters on the injured reserve list Friday and activated QB Shane Boyd for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. The Cardinals also activated WRs Michael Spurlock and Todd Watkins. Macklin is sidelined with an injured hamstring and Walters has a bad ankle.

*** Thursday Update *** TM Arizona Cardinals (ARI) WR/PR Troy Walters suffered a sprained ankle in practice and is listed as doubtful. WR and backup PR Bryant Johnson has a hip pointer but is probable for Sunday's game and is expected to play.

*** Thursday Update *** TM Atlanta Falcons (ATL) A year of disappointment deteriorated further Wednesday as several Falcons players vented about their team's woes. Just days before a crucial final game that could get the team into the playoffs, or their coach fired, players took jabs at each other, coaches, the front office and anyone else they saw fit to blame. CB DeAngelo Hall said that even firing embattled HC Jim Mora would not necessarily fix things. "Even with a coaching change I don't know if guys will own up or accept responsibility; that's just how it is." TE Alge Crumpler said the offensive approach, under OC Greg Knapp, has been directionless. RB Warrick Dunn agreed.

TM Atlanta Falcons (ATL) Owner Arthur Blank said last month that a second straight 8-8 finish is unacceptable, and that is where the team is heading even with a season ending victory. If the team gets a post season birth, perhaps head coach Jim Mora's job could be salvaged. For that to happen though, the Falcons will not only need a win but would also need losses from Carolina, Green Bay, and the New York Giants.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Carolina Panthers (CAR) The Panthers have placed CB Dion Byrum on injured reserve and signed S Cam Newton.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Chicago Bears (CHI) CB/WR/KR/PR Devin Hester may have his duties scaled back. HC Lovie Smith noted, "Devin Hester made a couple of bad decisions on catching the ball, whether he was catching or letting the ball roll or whatever. We're doing quite a few things with him. Maybe we need to take a few things away from him and make sure what he does best, returning the football, remains that way."

*** Saturday Update *** TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) HC Romeo Crennel is reportedly expected to return next season but will likely be asked to fire some of his offensive assistants. Crennel, however, could be relieved of his duties if unwilling to let go of any members from his staff.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) The Browns added DB Therrian Fontenot and Babatunde Oshinowo from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday morning.

TM Cleveland Browns (CLE) The Browns placed QB Derek Anderson and DT J'Vonne Parker on injured-reserve Tuesday and signed QB Lang Campbell to the active roster.

*** Friday Update *** TM Dallas Cowboys (DAL) HC Bill Parcells is puzzled by the recent criticism made by members of the starting offense, particularly WRs Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn and RB Julius Jones, that they are not receiving enough action on the field. "It's funny, it's real funny," Parcells said. "I got two 1,000-yard receivers. I have a 1,000-yard rusher. I got the second runner going for 15 touchdowns. I got a tight end who has caught 60 passes. Now tell me again they are not involved. Sometimes, no matter how much, it's not enough. I just disregard it. I'm trying to play the game. I'm not trying to satisfy."

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Dallas Cowboys (DAL) WRs Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens questioned the team’s offensive playcalling in the week 16 defeat. "I don't think we're trying to win; no, not on offense," said Glenn. "You have to execute and get everyone involved. I try not to let it get to me. Man, I've been fighting it all year. I'm trying to be a team player, but there's no reason for it." Glenn has scored only twice in the last six games. "I'm not alone," said Glenn, who had only one reception against Philadelphia for 17 yards. "The whole offense is frustrated. They are looking around saying, 'Why can't we do anything when we have all these weapons?'" Owens had comments as well. "Everybody knows what I do," said Owens, who didn't have a ball thrown in his direction until the second quarter. "Every team I've been involved with, I've been involved early and often. It's hard to get into a flow when you get a ball here and a ball there. Late in the game, they start throwing the ball to me. It's too late."

*** Friday Update *** TM Detroit Lions (DET) The Lions placed G Ross Verba on the injured reserve list Friday and signed DE Claude Harriott from the practice squad.

Also, OC Mike Martz is confident he will return next season. "Oh, sure. Yeah. I feel certain that I'll be here. Who knows? But I feel like that'll happen," Martz said. "We've got a lot of work to do here. This is going to be a great thing when this thing gets turned."

*** Thursday Update *** TM Detroit Lions (DET) The Lions will receive a fifth round selection from the Miami Dolphins as part of a contingency trade the two teams made this past offseason. They had agreed on a sixth rounder, but Harrington's playing time (11 starts) bumped it up to a fifth.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Indianapolis Colts (IND) HC Tony Dungy doesn't plan to rest his starters during Sunday's contest. "We've got to treat this like a must-win game," HC Tony Dungy said. "We need to win to stay ahead of New England and put pressure on Baltimore." After four losses in six games, people may thing the Colts are losing confidence. Dungy doesn't think so, saying, "I don't think it's confidence, I think there's disappointment and frustration that we're not getting it done. We have to fix it if we want to get where we want to go."

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Jacksonville Jaguars (JAX) CB Rashean Mathis lined up to return some punts and kickoffs against New England, but it is not necessarily a sign of things to come. HC Jack Del Rio noted, "It won't be a permanent move. We're going to continue to look for ways to get real special talented guys involved. He has some special ability and we want to look to get him a shot to give us a lift."

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Miami Dolphins (MIA) The latest from HC Nick Saban regarding the vacant Alabama coaching job: no comment. "I'm just making a rule to never comment on something like that again because every time you comment on it, it just makes for another story," Saban said Wednesday. "So I'm not going to comment on it five years from now, and I'm not going to comment on it next week."

Also, the team placed CB Andre Goodman and CB Eddie Jackson on injured reserve. Both players sustained injuries in last Monday night's game against the Jets at Dolphin Stadium. To take their spots on the 53-man roster, the team signed S Norman LeJeune and CB Shirdonya Mitchell off the practice squad.

*** Thursday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) The Vikings announced on Wednesday that they have been awarded CB Michael Hawkins off waivers from the Browns. The team also signed RB Wendell Mathis from the practice squad.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) The Vikings have placed CB Cedric Griffin and CB Fred Smoot on the injured reserve list. Smoot broke his jaw in five places and needed surgery after he was involved in a single-car accident Friday in Mississippi. The team also added OL Khreem Smith from the practice squad to the active roster.

TM Minnesota Vikings (MIN) The Vikings released WR Marcus Robinson on Sunday.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM New Orleans Saints (NO) HC Sean Payton faces one of the most difficult dilemmas a coach can encounter, how to treat a "meaningless" Week 17 game. "I'm wrestling with all of it right now, and this is the first time I've been in this position, not just as a head coach, but period," said Payton. Chances are, the Saints will take it easy with their key players, such as QB Drew Brees, WR Marques Colston, RB Deuce McAllister, RB Reggie Bush and a handful of defensive starters. They likely will give extra rest to players nursing injuries, meaning WR Joe Horn probably won't return.

Also, the Saints waived veteran RB Fred McAfee and re-signed DE Trevor Johnson.

TM New York Giants (NYG) According to the NY Daily News, John Hufnagel, the much-maligned offensive coordinator, was stripped of his play-calling duties by head coach Tom Coughlin. Quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride will call the plays in Saturday's regular-season finale in Washington.

Hufnagel will continue "in an administrative role with the offensive staff."

"This isn't about making John the scapegoat," Coughlin said. "Nobody on this staff works harder than John, and he has tried to do everything that I have asked of him. I have great respect for him and for his work ethic and I feel a strong loyalty to John because of that, so this is a difficult thing for me to do. But we have to do something to give us a spark."

TM New York Giants (NYG) RB and return specialist Chad Morton tore the ACL in his left knee while attempting to tackle the Saints' Reggie Bush on a punt return. Rookie WR Sinorice Moss took over return duties thereafter.

The Giants have signed free agent WR Darius Watts, TE Darcy Johnson from their practice squad and RB Robert Douglas from the Houston Texans' practice squad.

*** Friday Update *** TM Oakland Raiders (OAK) The Raiders placed RB LaMont Jordan and WR Jerry Porter on injured reserve Friday. Jordan has been sidelined since tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on Nov. 19 against Kansas City. Porter injured his hip in that game against the Chiefs and hasn't played since. Oakland activated S Hiram Eugene and TE Derek Miller from the practice squad, making them eligible for Sunday's season finale against the New York Jets.

TM Oakland Raiders (OAK) Coach Art Shell is hanging in there. "I am the head coach of the Raiders until I am otherwise informed," Shell said Tuesday. "That's the way I see it."

*** Friday Update *** TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) HC Bill Cowher is expected to retire next week. Speculation is that, after 15 seasons, Cowher is going to hang up his whistle, ending one of the most successful eras in coaching history. One season after he won one for the thumb, Cowher is expected to move to Raleigh, N.C., to be with his wife and youngest daughter. Then after spending a year away from the game, those close to Cowher expect him to return to coaching with one of the most lucrative contracts in history. If he resigns, Cowher can't coach in 2007 without the Steelers' permission.

TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) ``That's for next week,'' coach Bill Cowher said Tuesday when asked if he would return next season. ``We'll talk about that next week. It won't go long. I'm not sure what the time frame is. But I think the most important thing is to be focused on this game.''

TM Pittsburgh Steelers (PIT) HC Bill Cowher apparently won't make anyone wait to learn if he will return as the Pittsburgh Steelers' coach next season. Cowher is expected to announce his future plans within a few days of Sunday's season-ending game at Cincinnati, one that is without playoff implications for the no-longer-defending Super Bowl champion Steelers (7-8). "That's for next week," Cowher said Tuesday when asked if he would return next season. "We'll talk about that next week. It won't go long. I'm not sure what the time frame is. *** Friday Update *** TM Tennessee Titans (TEN) The Titans plan to exercise the option on HC Jeff Fisher's contract in the coming days, then continue discussions with him on a long-term deal at season's end, according to sources. By exercising the option, the Titans keep Fisher under contract and buy time to negotiate a long-term deal. The Titans have until Sunday to officially exercise the option. The Titans are also expected to exercise the one-year options for OC Norm Chow and DC Jim Schwartz.

*** Wednesday Update *** TM Washington Redskins (WAS) The Redskins released CB Mike Rumph on Wednesday.
