*** Thursday Update *** RB Kevan Barlow (NYJ) will back up starter Derrick Blaylock Sunday against the Titans. HC Eric Mangini has stated that the player who starts isn't necessarily the player who gets the most touches, and the guy who gets the carries in a given situation will be based on the RB package the play calls for.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Derrick Blaylock (NYJ) will get the starting nod Sunday against the Titans, though HC Eric Mangini has indicated that the player who starts is not necessarily the player who will get the most carries. *** Thursday Update *** RB LenDale White (TEN) practiced Thursday. He is officially listed as questionable, but HC Jeff Fisher said that if White doesn't show drastic improvement by Friday, he would likely not play. Note that he does not say he won't play; just that he likely won't.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB LenDale White (TEN) did not practice Wednesday and is questionable for Week 1.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) is expected to line up as the starter Monday night, with Clinton Portis basically declaring himself out for the season opener. Portis has suggested he may not be back in time for Week 2 either, which further enhances Betts' value.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) may be the team's opening week starter. Clinton Portis revealed that he is only at 75%, and doesn't want to play until he feels 100%. Jason La Canfora of the Washington Times has said to expect "a lot of Ladell Betts" in the game Monday night.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) will start if Clinton Portis is unable to go. Betts will likely play an increased role even if Portis does suit up for the game.

*** Friday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (WAS) should play a significant role Monday night with starter Clinton Portis not expected to suit up. At the very least, Duckett should handle the short-yardage and goal line carries.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB T.J. Duckett (WAS) will play a prime role if Clinton Portis is unable to play Week 1. Even if Portis can play, Duckett is expected to fill at least the short-yardage role.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) in a surprise move, has been upgraded to probable by coach Joe Gibbs. Gibbs said that Portis would back up starting RB Ladell Betts in Monday Night's game. He said how much Portis plays will be determined by the flow of the game. Gibbs said, "We'll kind of let the game portray what role that will be." Much more detail in the Breaking News email update sent to subscribers.

*** Friday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) all but declared himself out for this week's game by saying he was only at 83% right now, but he is expected to be ready for Week 2. Still, Portis conceded there is a chance he might not be ready by then, either. "The way things look, you'll probably be seeing (me) against Dallas. But who knows? If not, I should be ready for Houston. They want me to be 100%." Ladell Betts is expected to start if Portis cannot go.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) practiced on a very limited basis Thursday. Portis declared himself at 75%, and has said he doesn't want to try and play again until he's 100%. "I would love to be out on the field, but we've got to look at the long run. We've got to look at the overall season instead of trying to jump back early and play in this game and then miss the key games we've got coming up behind it. I would love to go, but at the same time, as the coach told me, if I'm not feeling 100%, don't get out and chance it. I've still got to get back into football shape. There's a difference between football shape and the conditioning that I've been doing." Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, who follows the team as closely as anyone, suggests fantasy owners sit Portis this week and expect to see a lot of Ladell Betts.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) is questionable for Week 1. There have been conflicting reports as to his availability. If Portis cannot go, Ladell Betts would get the start, with T.J. Duckett playing a prime role as well. Portis did not practice Tuesday, and HC Joe Gibbs has decided to let Portis decide whether or not he is able to play Week 1. Though he did add that if Portis is unable to practice at all, he will not play. The team has three more practices between now and the first game.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Keyshawn Johnson (CAR) missed practice Tuesday to attend to a personal matter, but will return to practice this week and start as usual Week 1. With Steve Smith nursing multiple hamstrings, Johnson may likely be the team's #1 option in the passing game.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) is still a game time decision but we're starting to feel pessimistic about him. Check the footballguys website Sunday morning and we'll bring you the official word.

*** Friday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) missed another practice on Friday and remains questionable for this week's game. John Clayton of ESPN reported Thursday evening that Smith most likely will not play Sunday. If he cannot start, Drew Carter or Keary Colbert would take his place alongside Keyshawn Johnson in the starting lineup.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) did not practice Thursday and remains questionable to play Week 1. His teammates and coaches seem to believe he will suit up, but HC John Fox has indicated that Smith will be a game-time decision.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Steve Smith (CAR) injured his right hamstring during Tuesday’s practice and did not practice Wednesday. The current injury is not related to a left hamstring injury that had been bothering him throughout training camp. Smith also recently revealed he had undergone a procedure for an ingrown toenail in mid-August. He is officially questionable for Week 1, and his status will be closely monitored.

QB Jake Delhomme said Wednesday that he expected Smith to play. Coach John Fox was pretty matter of fact about it Wednesday: "He tweaked his other hamstring and we rested him today," Fox said. "We'll see how he looks tomorrow. "He practiced 10 times and he's in great physical condition. We're just taking it slow, but he had a little setback."

WR Keyshawn Johnson said he thought Smith would be ready. "I expect to see him playing. I don't know anything different, other than he looks fine to me. But I'm not a doctor," said Johnson, who has yet to play with Smith in a game since signing with Carolina in the offseason. "I think when it happens it will be fun. Hopefully he's playing possum."

*** Friday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) missed practice again on Friday and is still listed as questionable. But we're starting to worry. He will be a gametime decision Sunday.

*** Thursday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) missed practice Thursday and was only able to do light work on the sidelines with trainers. More importantly, he was officially downgraded from probable to questionable on the injury report. It's always a concern when a player is downgraded this close to game-time, and if Houshmandzadeh cannot go, Chris Henry would move into the starting lineup.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) missed practice Wednesday and is probable for Week 1.

*** Friday Update *** WR Braylon Edwards (CLE) says his knee injury is completely behind him, and that he is ready for this weekend's game.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Greg Jennings (GB) has been named a starter opposite Donald Driver, beating out Robert Ferguson.

*** Friday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) was expected to practice Friday, but did not. His availability for Sunday remains questionable, and at this point it is unlikely he'll play. Aaron Moorehead would start in Stokley's place if he's unable to go.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) did not practice Thursday but is expected to practice on Friday. He is questionable to play this week.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Brandon Stokley (IND) did not practice Monday but is still expected to play Week 1.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Reggie Williams (JAX) is listed as a starter on the team’s depth chart, meaning the team will have three WR on the field to begin the game.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Todd Pinkston (MIN) was released by the Vikings. It's possible they cut him and then will resign him to keep from having to pay his full salary for this year as they did with Koren Robinson last year.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Deion Branch (NE) had his grievance revoked. What this means is that the hearing scheduled for today has been delayed, and will now go before a special master. We don't anticipate Branch having much chance of winning any of these grievances, so his value will remain in limbo until we hear something definitive.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Deion Branch (NE) has filed a grievance against the Patriots for failing to act in good faith when they granted permission to seek a trade with another club. Branch was able to come to terms with the Jets and Seahawks on a contract, but New England was unable to come to an agreement on compensation. Branch has threatened to hold out until Week 10 if he does not get the compensation he feels he deserves, and the Patriots have made alternate plans to be without Branch, recently acquiring WR Doug Gabriel from the Oakland Raiders to give the team depth.

*** Friday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) practiced Friday and is expected to play this week. He is listed as probable.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) missed a portion of practice Thursday and is probable to play.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Doug Gabriel (NE) was traded from the Oakland Raiders to bolster the Patriots’ WR depth with the threatened holdout of #1 WR Deion Branch. It is unknown exactly what role Gabriel will play in New England. He appears on the injury report as probable with a hamstring injury, but is expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) says he feels "perfect" and has no lingering issues with a hamstring injury that kept him out of nearly every preseason practice. How much he'll actually see the field remains to be seen. Despite his comments, Jackson was still limited in practice Friday and remains questionable on the injury report.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) missed a portion of practice Thursday and remains listed as questionable, but he is not expected to play much, if at all.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Chad Jackson (NE) hasn’t practiced and has missed the entire preseason with a hamstring injury. That, coupled with him being a rookie and trying to learn on the fly, means he will likely not play in Week 1.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Marques Colston (NO) was named the team’s #2 starting WR alongside #1 Joe Horn.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Devery Henderson (NO) , once expected to take over the #2 WR spot vacated by the trade of Donte Stallworth, will instead be the #3 WR to open the season after the promotion of Marques Colston to the starting lineup.

*** Friday Update *** WR Jerricho Cotchery (NYJ) is listed as the #2 WR on the depth chart and will start opposite Laveranues Coles this week.

*** Friday Update *** WR Jerry Porter (OAK) further alienated his team by parking in owner Al Davis' personal spot for Friday's practice. It is unclear whether Porter knew the spot belonged to Davis, since Porter has only been with the team for seven years.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Jerry Porter (OAK) will be the team's #4 WR this week, after Randy Moss, Alvis Whitted, and Ronald Curry.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Jerry Porter (OAK) practiced with the first-team offense Monday. He had been buried on the depth chart after a tumultuous off-season that included trade demands and bickering with HC Art Shell through the media. After the trade of Doug Gabriel to New England, Porter may be given a second chance to start opposite Randy Moss but will have to compete for playing time with WR Ronald Curry (who also worked with the first-team offense). Coach Art Shell in a surprise move named Alvis Whitted the starting WR to go with Moss for Week 1 however so Porter will have to overtake both Curry and Whitted.

*** Friday Update *** WR Alvis Whitted (OAK) practiced Friday and will start Monday night. He is listed as probable.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Alvis Whitted (OAK) will start opposite wide receiver Randy Moss in Week 1 beating out Jerry Porter and Ronald Curry. "He can run good routes and catch the ball, too," head coach Art Shell said Wednesday. He has "good quickness and explosion. ... This guy's been working the whole camp, worked all offseason, and this guy deserves a shot at it."

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) has practiced since Sunday and has been upgraded to probable on the injury report. He will start as usual Week 1.
